Historians have examined vernacular duplex homes in Milwaukee's north side neighborhoods to write the history of the white working-class immigrants who settled this industrial metropolis during the early years of the twentieth century. African Americans moved into these neighborhoods in the later decades of the twentieth century. This paper explores how current Black residents construe the history of their neighborhood. To examine what such a historical narrative might look like, this paper presents three stories from a single city block: a twentieth century narrative of growth, a more recent story of decline, and a longer aspirational dream of a shared commons. Grounded in the material world that they observe around them, the current inhabitants assemble these diverse memories in anachronic ways, around multiple experiences of time such as nostalgia, a sense of disenfranchisement in the present moment, and an aspirational dream of a yet unrealized future. This ability to craft a complex narrative of place in a precarious world has emerged as a form of collective resistance against realities of racism, segregation, and urban disinvestment. This study argues that three racialized emotive existences – nostalgia, fear, and hope – mark ethnically identified Haitian Americans' temporal and cultural narratives of Haiti. First, nostalgia highlights Haiti's significance as the first independent Black nation in the Western Hemisphere and the pride it evokes for Haitian Americans who grew up in a society that shunned them. Second, fear emphasizes the growing concern for safety as political instability, economic deprivation, and natural catastrophes undermine Haiti. Fear and anxiety prompt the need for physical safety and distance, while Haitian Americans also desire the emotional security of their parents' presence in response. Finally, Haitian Americans anticipate a future that permits Haiti's history and beauty to be the focal point. Much of this focus is on their children, but hope draws Haitian Americans back to Haiti. The findings suggest that racialized emotive existences frame Haitian Americans' (dis)connection and reveal tenuous ties to Haiti. For much of the twentieth century, the tramway was the most important public transport system in Copenhagen, Denmark. It played a crucial role in the life of the city and features strongly in Danish art and literature produced during the network's lifespan as well as after it was finally closed in 1972. Despite this, the tramway has only received scarce scholarly attention. This article looks to address the situation. It does so by drawing attention to the fact that although the tramway was shut down, it lived on in art and literature. One example of this is "På Sporet af den Tabte Vogn" (1985) written by Klaus Rifbjerg. This short story has often been described as nostalgic. While this is not a misreading, it is an assessment that requires clarification. A close reading that draws on studies of nostalgia reveals that the short story does not boil down to a sentimental longing for a lost past. Rather, it thematises nostalgia for the Copenhagen tramway, questioning such remembrances' status and relevance in contemporary society. This means that, ultimately, the short story can be seen as part of a broader tendency in writing about closures of electric public transport networks in Western Europe and North America: it works as a counternarrative to notions of progress, an antidote to predominant ideas of urban development in the mid-twentieth century. In recent years, there has been a surge in interest towards innovative methods of landscape presentation across various tourism sectors, including natural heritage. Geotourism exemplifies this trend, emerging as a distinct form of tourism primarily centered on inanimate elements of nature, accentuating the aesthetic value of landscapes. Presently, geotourism serves as a platform for showcasing landscape along with its historical narrative, contemporary attributes, and, inherently, its evolutionary trajectory. This paper delves into novel avenues within geotourism, introducing the concept of nostalgic geotourism. This concept involves the portrayal of geological heritage through the lens of historical inquiry. The authors employ a multidimensional analysis to forge a robust theoretical framework underpinning the emergence of this unconventional form of tourism dedicated to landscape presentation. Additionally, the paper furnishes a case study conducted in the High Tatras region, featuring a 19th-century guided tour (lecture) on non-living nature. Through this illustration, the theoretical construct of nostalgic geotourism is applied to the locale. This heralds a fresh dimension of tourism reminiscent of traditional nostalgia-based tourism, with a pronounced cultural focus. Drawing on an existing debate regarding the conservation of living heritage, this paper delves into the dissonance and contestation that emerges during the aesthetic treatment of religious wall paintings. The Cypriot UNESCO painted churches open a window for the examination of how policy makers, clergy and visitors negotiate the materiality of religion. This multi-method qualitative comparative case study aims to understand how the 'material-focused' Authorised Heritage Discourse retains its hegemony during the conservation of living heritage and how AHD-led practices ('preserve as found' strategy) impact visitors' perceived authenticity and experience. The findings demonstrate that over the years, a centralised decision-making system has been maintained in Cyprus that limits polyvocality, perpetuating AHD-led practices. However, evidence of reconciliation between AHD and living tradition was found, challenging the current assumption that considers anti-restoration (objective authenticity) and living religious tradition as antithetic practices. Interviews showcased that for most social agents, deliberate damage, patina, and graffiti triggered an immersive and highly reflective experience while the prospect of restoration provoked 'pre-nostalgia,' a self-awareness that restoration may result in significant cultural loss. Offering an inaugural analysis of Israeli Nonsense, this article explores humor, globalization, and Israeli identity since the early 1990s. Israeli Nonsense, a particular form of humor, emerged during Israel's rapid shift towards neoliberal privatization and globalization. Influenced by the growing popularity of standup comedy and the rise of new commercial television channels, it became a distinctive humor style in an era marked by optimism and "normalization." It quickly formed nostalgic classics, leaving a lasting impact on contemporary Israeli humor. Through interviews, newspaper excerpts, and sketch analysis, we identify five key attributes of Israeli Nonsense: (1) improvisation, (2) linguistic humor, (3) physical humor, (4) nostalgia, and (5) non-politicization. By challenging existing interpretations of 1990s Israeli culture and nonsense as "elitist" with anti-national and non-ideological tendencies, we highlight the popular manifestations of Israeli Nonsense to demonstrate that this distinct humor did not adopt a consciously critical and cynical stance towards society and culture but embodied an optimistic and empathetic attitude toward local identity in the age of globalization. This article analyzes the discursive strategies of the Turkish Jewish community of Çanakkale to make sense of their troubled memories resulting in a mass emigration. Considering the emphasis on silence in the present literature on the memory practices of the Jewish community, I argue that they do not simply avoid facing the past but rather refer to nostalgia as a complementary, proactive strategy. My analysis is based on the memoirs and impressions of the individual members who took part in the annual visit to Çanakkale to highlight the role of nostalgia between silence and speaking out. The critical discourse analysis of the narratives published in the newsweekly Şalom reveals that nostalgia emerges as a silence-breaker. In addition to the constructive strategy of presenting the discourses of coexistence and good-neighborhood embodied in a distinctive local identity, they propose a strategy of dismantling the figures that challenge the former by de-ethnicizing them. O presente artigo tem como objetivo entender as causas da migração do sucesso do filme Barbie (2023, Greta Gerwig) para a indústria da moda, resultando na tendência Barbiecore. Para isso, foi realizado um estudo Interdisciplinar relacionando história da moda, cultura popular, marketing, sociologia e psicologia de consumo. Assim, ao longo de seis meses foram analisados: a ligação da boneca Barbie com a moda e sua consequente influência nesse mercado, o figurino do longa e suas inspirações, o papel da nostalgia no mundo pós-pandêmico, as estratégias publicitárias usadas para promover o filme, o uso do fã como divulgador voluntário, os hábitos de consumo de moda das gerações Y e Z durante e após a pandemia de Covid-19 e as passarelas de moda nesses dois períodos. Esse estudo foi feito a partir de pesquisas Bibliográficas e Documentais (através de artigos de publicidade, moda e psicologia publicados em revistas acadêmicas, livros de sociologia, sites renomados de moda, dados fornecidos por jornais e/ou entrevistas com a equipe de produção do filme, e o próprio filme) tanto Qualitativas quanto Quantitativas e resultou na documentação da importância do conhecimento das necessidades psicoemocionais do público alvo e da predisposição de um produto à conexão com outras áreas a fim da construção de uma campanha de marketing eficaz no mercado de consumo de moda voltado às gerações Y e Z.

It has become conventional wisdom to say that rural America is (and rural Americans are) in “crisis,” and this has generated a cottage industry of commentary from journalists, academics, politicians, policy makers, and others. Sometimes the story of crisis is economic: jobs harder and harder to find in the rural pockets of the nation. Sometimes it is social: rural isolation and desperation that lead to drug addiction and suicide. Whatever its cause, the result has been that rural America has been “left behind,” to borrow from the title of sociologist Robert Wuthnow's recent book on the topic. And the sub-title of his book encapsulates the politics this crisis has generated: decline and rage. This article interrogates the narrative of crisis and decline by historicizing it more deeply, by examining how enduring rural mythologies continue to shape our discourse about rural places, and to argue that far from being “left behind” in the national parade, rural America has often been leading it.

The Ponniyin Selvan (Ponni’s Son) novels by Kalki, serialized from 1950 to 1954 and set during the medieval ages in the Tamil country against the backdrop of a power struggle between and within the two South Indian dynasties of the Cholas and the Pandyas, during the reign of Parantaka II (also known as Sundara Chola) roughly from 958 CE to 973 CE, represent a format of the historical novel that addressed the post-independence anxieties about language, tradition and regional identity within popular Tamil print culture in the 1940s and 1950s. Kalki’s historical romances were written amidst specific socio-political movements that gained momentum in the early and mid-twentieth century. This article situates the revivalist and reformist agendas espoused by nationalists such as Kalki in the twentieth century within the context of the ideological shifts and turbulences in Tamil political and public spheres concerning Tamil language and literary history, through an analysis of the Ponniyin Selvan series as a representative text of this shifting context of Tamil identity formation, as a popular historical novel and a collective memory text. In recent years several older, serialized TV dramas have experienced surges in popularity among young viewers. The 2020-21 online resurgence of The Sopranos (1999–2007) is perhaps the most compelling example of this. Using the data from a series of semi-structured interviews conducted with fans who watched the show for the first time in 2020-21, this study considers what draws audiences to "old shows" and how they adapt them to contemporary contexts of interpretation. I argue that there are specific considerations that we need to make when investigating contemporary audience receptions of old television. Ultimately, The Sopranos resurgence highlights a new type of "afterlife" for serial drama. Using Miller's work on retextuality I conclude that it is important that we understand the resurgent versions of these TV shows as the new texts they are. While the focus for many advertising academics and practitioners has been on nostalgia, there is a dearth of research on future-focused appeals. We introduce a new concept, forestalgia, or a consumer's yearning for an idealized future. To understand the impact of nostalgia and forestalgia, qualitative background interviews were conducted with creative directors and other advertising creatives from numerous nationally recognized advertising agencies. Building on the insights from the interviews and using construal level theory as our foundation, we explore consumer response to hedonic and utilitarian products when appeals employ far-past, near-past, near-future, and far-future framing. Thus, we examine whether nostalgia or forestalgia is better suited for certain products. We find utilitarian products are better received with a temporal distance that is far from the present with hedonic products better suited for appeals framed in the far past and near future. The paper investigates the concept of being-at-home in both phenomenology and psychoanalysis. In order to accomplish this task, I draw on Donald Winnicott’s scattered psychoanalytical observations regarding the question what belonging to a home means. Furthermore, certain phenomenological concepts, which can be found in the works of canonical authors, such as Emmanuel Levinas and Gaston Bachelard, are applied onto this analysis. The whole aim is to prove that in both phenomenology and psychoanalysis, the notion of being-at-home plays a major role. Moreover, the two disciplines, bringing along their own perspectives, contribute to and enrich one another. I attempt to show that the home, which we live in, is of great importance in establishing the potential space (between mother and infant). Therefore, I endeavor to prove that the home is not merely a house, but allows the potential space (Winnicott) to take place and unfold. From there, play and creativity arise.

This text studies the role of the house as a key space to understand the contemporary individual in two Colombian novels of the second decade of the twenty-first century: Casablanca la bella (2013)by Fernando Vallejo and Una casa en Bogotá (2014) by Santiago Gamboa. First, a historical revision of the role of this space in Latin American literature is presented. Later on, through the concept of “Autofiction” and the perspective that Gaston Bachelard and other authors offer regarding the link between houses and inner life, the article characterizes the use that Gamboa and Vallejo give to the house as a resource that organizes the plot and defines the narrator-protagonist through the analogy between it and the spaces he inhabits. Finally, the article analyzes how in these two works of literature the house is reconfigured as a location that promotes nostalgia and functions as an illusory shelter from outside reality. Thus, these two novels provide a new role for the house within the evolution of Latin American literature, since they integrate the inner world of the individual with the social reality of its country through the use of the space of home.

In 2023, a major Hollywood film company celebrated its 100th birthday, and almost no one blinked an eye. That studio was Warner Brothers, which was founded on 4 April 1923 by brothers Harry, Albert, Sam, and Jack Warner. But on 16 October 2023, another major Hollywood film company—the Walt Disney Company, founded on 16 October 1923 by brothers Walt and Roy Disney—celebrated its 100th birthday with much more fanfare. In early 2023, it began a year-long celebration of its centenary. The first thing it did was launch an entire product line—Disney Eras—in which Disney’s history was celebrated, decade by decade, with merchandise that either reproduced or evoked important places, moments, and characters of the studio’s history.

This article examines the production of musical nostalgia in High School Musical: The Musical: The Series (2019–23), one of the first series created for Disney’s streaming platform. On one level, the series serves as a nostalgic extension of the High School Musical franchise in its setting and narrative construction, and a nostalgic continuation of the teen-musical genre in its idealised depiction of high-school life mediated through song. At the same time, this nostalgia is coupled with an emphasis on the show’s newness: the series transposes the original film to a new format—a self-referential, multi-episodic mockumentary—and occupies a different temporal world, in which nostalgia is technologically mediated and constructed as part of the diegesis. Focusing on music, as a primary sensory input for the evocation of nostalgia, this study explores how The Series capitalises upon this nostalgia/modernity dichotomy to structure its narrative and engender brand affinity. Drawing together textual analyses of audiovisual sequences and practitioner testimony from the show’s creatives, it demonstrates how The Series uses music to develop Disney’s brand, harnessing the technological and creative promise of the Company’s proprietary streaming service, whilst simultaneously employing nostalgic strategies to reaffirm the status quo in aspects of its narrative.

W tekście nakreślona została geneza zjawiska, wywodzona z ulegającej na przełomie XIX i XX wieku silnym przeobrażeniom kultury ludowej, spowodowanym uwłaszczeniem chłopów, industrializacją, migracją ludności wiejskiej do miast oraz możliwością awansu społecznego. Opisane zostały praktyki tworzenia i dystrybucji monideł oraz realia, w jakich te obrazy funkcjonowały. Fenomen monideł pokazuje, jak w PRL-u nierówności społeczne podtrzymywane były za pomocą sądu smaku, rozumianego za Pierrem Bourdieu jako narzędzie społecznej dystynkcji. W końcowej części podjęte zostały próby wskazania przyczyn, dla których temat monideł był długotrwale pomijany w dyskursie naukowym.

This study examined whether the average levels and the temporal extension of self-continuity varied over the course of the COVID-19 pandemic. Three demographically matched adult life-span samples (n = 223 each) were gathered in the U.S. in fall 2016, summer 2020, and winter 2022/23. Participants rated their self-continuity 1/5/10 years into the past and future. Multi-level analyses examined the effects of temporal distance, past/future direction, and assessment time while controlling for demographics. The tendencies to report lower self-continuity for more distant times and for past versus future were weaker during the pandemic, and past/future differences remained after the pandemic. Discussion focuses on the possibility of mid-pandemic slowed time perception, increasing nostalgic self-reflection, and uncertainty about the future. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Yugonostalgia, defined briefly as nostalgia for the era of socialist Yugoslavia, manifests itself in various forms as a socio-cultural movement adopted in the former Yugoslav countries. The political aspect of Yugonostalgia is an expression of a critical attitude towards the wars and ethnic nationalism during the break-up of Yugoslavia, which disregarded the practice of multicultural coexistence. Furthermore, considering that the former Yugoslavia countries are currently entangled in a cycle of political and economic problems such as poverty, corruption, and unemployment, the possibility arises that Yugonostalgia could lead to a new political movement that could be embraced by the masses who are fed up with those troubles. The study discusses the potential of Yugonostalgia to transform into an effective alternative political movement in post-Yugoslav countries and to forge a new political identity beyond being a socio-cultural movement expressing nostalgia for Yugoslavia and a critical attitude towards contemporary problems. Its main assumption is that Yugonostalgia does not yet have the potency to go beyond being a cultural movement based on collective memory and to unite the masses with political motivation. The Jewish past has always represented a distinct chapter in Morocco's history; an embodiment of a historic component of Moroccan society. 'Tinghir – Jerusalem: Les Echoes du Mellah' (2013): a documentary by Moroccan director Kamal Hachkar, excavates history through places and testimonies of Jews who left Morocco towards 'Israel' and Muslims still living in Tinghir in an attempt to investigate the factors that shaped Moroccan Jews' migration. Going back and forth diverse oral narrations about lived experiences, Moroccan Muslims and Jews recall their memories of good neighbourliness and coexistence during the 1950s and 1960s before the exodus. Memories clash and a new generation that did not witness anything about the history of Jews in Morocco except the Jewish cemetery; emerges, and although the perceptions regarding the Jews' departure diverge, the common feelings of belonging, intense nostalgia and diaspora of the soul appears to be shared. The aim of the research: was to verify the effectiveness of the counseling program based on the dimensions of self-compassion to reduce nostalgia for the past among displaced Nubians. Research sample: the experimental sample consisted of (14) displaced Nubians and this sample was randomly divided into two (7) experimental and (7) control groups after confirming the parity of the two groups. Research tools: the nostalgia scale of El-Nasr and El-Gendy (2022) was used, as well as Preparation of a counseling program based on the dimensions of self-compassion used in the current research. Research methodology: The research was based on Semi-experimental approach. Research results: There were statistically significant differences between the means scores of experimental group and control group at post-test on nostalgia. These differences in favor of control group. there were statistically significant differences between the means scores of experimental group at the pre-test and post-test nostalgia. These differences in favor of pre-test. There were no statistically significant differences between the means scores of experimental group at post-test and follow up-test on nostalgia, The results indicated that the effectiveness of the counseling program based on the self-compassion in reducing nostalgia among displaced Nubians. This research puts forward the theoretical concept "print imprint," articulating the connection between the printed newspaper and its reader's "Self." This paper contends that the printed newspaper draws out the meaningfulness of ownership, touch and nostalgia, all influential ingredients of the self. This research centers on interviews with 19 former readers of a weekly newspaper that shuttered. The findings illustrate the significance, usefulness and uniqueness of the printed newspaper. In particular, participants expressed a relationship with the printed newspaper, calling it "my paper." Ultimately, this research argues that the loss of the weekly newspaper prompted a loss or lessening of self of the abandoned readers. Finally, this article argues this "print imprint" extends beyond printed newspapers and should be considered for all print products, including magazines and books, pointing to future research possibilities. In recent years right-extremist ideologies, parties and regimes are gaining popularity and power all over the globe, and as days go by, hope for equality, freedom and peace seems more and more unrealistic, delusionary, perhaps even dangerous. To what goals and in which ways should one educate in a reality that offers no end in sight to oppression? And should educators be satisfied with the hope to merely slow down or temporarily pause what seems to be inevitable? In this essay, I show that educators and their students might get caught up in state of stuckedness (Hage, 2009), to which fascist hope and fascist unique temporalities offer relief. I argue that from this situation, a particular and strong kind of hope can arise – radical hope that is immanently transcendent and whose objectives are incomprehensible and cannot be imagined at present. Paradoxically and while difficult to attain, this almost desperate hope can free educators from the discursive and temporal constraints set by both fascist ideologies and by the feeling of historical blockage, and instead infuse education with an emancipatory horizon. First, interested in both the experience of limited future, I draw insights from ethnographies that depict such historical periods and their relationship to fascism. Then, I present an analysis of fascist temporalities and draw principles for the fascist hope extracted from them. I also analyze the temptation of fascist hope through reading in the work of German Marxist philosopher Ernst Bloch, and follow his transcendent approach to the future which I bring into discussion with the concept of radical hope and with a call for learning observance. Teaching is one of the most stressful professions, and school teachers show a high turnover rate. Although it is an important issue in society, the work-life balance of teachers has not been extensively addressed in the context of leisure. Therefore, given the critical role of leisure in life, this study examined the relationships among school teachers' leisure nostalgia, leisure satisfaction, work commitment, turnover intention, and well-being. A total of 489 responses were collected from school teachers in Singapore. Results revealed leisure nostalgia positively influenced leisure satisfaction and work commitment. Furthermore, leisure satisfaction had positive effects on work commitment and well-being, while work commitment negatively affected turnover intention and positively affected well-being. This study also found the significant indirect effects of leisure nostalgia on work commitment, turnover intention, and well-being. This study contributes to a better understanding of the work-leisure relationship and provides strategies to improve well-being. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Traditional research on political parties pays little attention to the temporal focus of communication. It usually concentrates on promises, issue attention, and policy positions. This lack of scholarly attention is surprising, given that voters respond to nostalgic rhetoric and may even adjust issue positions when policy is framed in nostalgic terms. This article presents a novel dataset, PolNos, which contains six text-based measures of nostalgic rhetoric in 1,648 party manifestos across 24 European democracies from 1946 to 2018. The measures combine dictionaries, word embeddings, sentiment approaches, and supervised machine learning. Our analysis yields a consistent result: nostalgia is most prevalent in manifestos of culturally conservative parties, notably Christian democratic, nationalist, and radical right parties. However, substantial variation remains regarding regional differences and whether nostalgia concerns the economy or culture. Collective nostalgia is an emotion experienced when one sentimentally recalls events or things related to a particular social identity. We investigated the relationship between collective nostalgia about the United Kingdom (UK) and UK citizens' desire to leave the European Union (EU). We collected data of UK citizens twice prior to the UK's official withdrawal from the European Union (N = 347 and N = 240) and once afterwards (N = 236). Cross‐sectional and longitudinal analysis, utilizing cross‐lagged panel models, supported the hypothesis that collective UK nostalgia increased the desire to leave the European Union. We additionally hypothesized that the relationship between these variables would be mediated positively by ties to UK citizens and negatively by ties to EU citizens. Exploratory and longitudinal analysis, however, indicated that strength of ties to UK and EU citizens predicts levels of collective UK nostalgia which, in turn, predicts desire to leave the European Union. Powerlessness is a prevalent experience in everyday life. Although research has indicated that consumption can restore a sense of power, it remains unclear how people cope with powerlessness when regaining power is impossible. We propose that in such circumstances nostalgia consumption can act as a coping strategy, and examine if so, then how and when powerlessness increases consumer preference for nostalgic products. Across eight studies (including three supplementary studies), we found that consumers preferred nostalgic products when they felt powerless more than when they felt powerful. Uncertainty about the future acted as the underlying mechanism, one that consumers could alleviate by consuming nostalgic products. When high-status and nostalgic products were both available and regaining power was therefore possible, consumers with higher self-acceptance still preferred nostalgic products, whereas ones with lower self-acceptance preferred high-status products.
