Abstract: We performed photometric calibration of the PhotoMultiplier Tube (PMT) and readout electronics used for the new fluorescence detectors of the Telescope Array (TA) experiment using Rayleigh scattered photons from a pulsed nitrogen laser beam. The experimental setup, measurement procedure, and results of calibration are described. The total systematic uncertainty of the calibration is estimated to be 7.2%. An additional uncertainty of 3.7% is introduced by the transport of the calibrated PMTs from the laboratory to the TA experimental site., 43 pages, 15 figures

Abstract: Cell profiles determined by the thin-layer advanced cytology assay system (TACAS™), a liquid-based cytology technique newly developed in Japan, were analyzed in this study. Hybrid capture 2 (HC-2) was also performed using the liquid-based samples prepared by TACAS to ascertain its ability to detect human papillomavirus (HPV). Cell collection samples from uterine cervix were obtained from 359 patients and examined cytologically. A HC-2 assay for HPV was carried out in the cell specimens. All specimens were found to show background factors such as leukocytes. After excluding the 5 unsatisfactory cases from the total 354 cases, 82 cases (23.2%) were positive and 272 cases (76.8%) were negative for HPV. Cell specimens from 30 HPV-positive cases and 166 HPV-negative cases were subjected to 4 weeks of preservation at room temperature. Then, when subsequently re-assayed, 28 cases (93.3%) in the former group were found to be HPV positive and 164 cases (98.8%) in the latter group were found to be HPV negative. These results supported the excellent reproducibility of TACAS for HPV testing. A reasonable inference from the foregoing analysis is that TACAS may be distinguished from other liquid-based cytological approaches, such as ThinPrep and SurePath, in that it can retain the cell backgrounds. Furthermore, this study raises the possibility that cell specimens prepared using TACAS could be preserved for at least 4 weeks prior to carrying out a HC-2 assay for HPV.

Abstract: Atypical polypoid adenomyoma is a rare uterine tumor composed of atypical endometrial glands, which often exhibit squamous metaplasia, and a cellular smooth muscle stroma. Although atypical polypoid adenomyoma is categorized as a benign lesion, it is reportedly associated with endometrial cancer, and it shows persistence and recurrence even after conservative medical treatment. We present a rare case of atypical polypoid adenomyoma that possibly underwent a serial pathological change from endometrial hyperplasia to carcinoma in a 40-year-old woman with no history of pregnancy. She was diagnosed with atypical polypoid adenomyoma during polypectomy surgery. After resecting the atypical polypoid adenomyoma, endometrial hyperplasia complex was detected. This condition eventually progressed from atypical hyperplasia complex to endometrial adenocarcinoma, and total abdominal hysterectomy was performed. A patient with atypical polypoid adenomyoma who wishes to preserve her fertility should be carefully monitored for endometrial carcinoma. If endometrial hyperplasia is detected in such a patient, a meticulous follow-up examination by performing endometrial biopsy is mandatory.

Abstract: We compared the detection rate of cervical neoplasias between a liquid-based cytology (LBC) method using SurePath and the conventional method. We also studied the feasibility of human papillomavirus (HPV) typing by linear array assay. Cytological specimens from 1551 Japanese women were prepared using the conventional and SurePath methods; the cytological and histological results from biopsy samples were compared. HPV typing using an HPV linear array assay was carried out on residual specimens using the SurePath method. The cytodiagnostic results showed a concordance rate of 85.3% (κ = 0.46) between the two methods. The sensitivity of lesions histopathologically diagnosed as CIN1 or above was not significantly different between the two methods (P = 0.575–1.000). The receiver operating characteristic curve analysis of the detectability in CIN2 or above revealed no significant difference between the two methods (P = 0.096). Among the 44 patients who underwent HPV typing using a linear array assay, 33 samples were eligible for HPV testing and were stored at ambient temperature. In conclusion, the SurePath and conventional methods have equivalent abilities for detecting cervical lesions. After preparation for cytological diagnosis, use of the remaining cells from the SurePath specimens to perform HPV typing using the linear array method could be feasible.

Abstract: The Telescope Array Project is an experiment designed to observe Ultra High Energy Cosmic Rays via a “hybrid” detection technique utilizing both fluorescence light detectors (FDs) and scintillator surface particle detectors (SDs). We have installed three FD stations and 507 SDs in the Utah desert, and initiated observations from March 2008. The northern FD station reuses 14 telescopes from the High Resolution Fly's Eye, HiRes-I station. Each of the two southern FD stations contains 12 new telescopes utilizing new FADC electronics. Each telescope is instrumented with a camera composed of 256 PMTs. Since the detectors are composed of many PMTs and each PMT detects fluorescence photons together with the vast amount of night sky background, a sophisticated triggering system is required. In this paper, we describe the trigger electronics of these new FD stations. We also discuss performance of the FDs with this triggering system, in terms of efficiencies and apertures for various detector configurations.

Abstract: The Telescope Array(TA) experiment located at western desert in Utah USA (N39.3,W112.9) is designed for observation of air shower from extreme high energy cosmic rays. The TA detector consists of 2 types of detector to enable a cross check on systematic difference from the two main methods of observation for the energy region. One is a Fluorescence detector (FD) for detecting fluorescence light from air shower and another is surface detector (SD) array for detecting air shower particles at ground level. Each SD consists of 2 layers of plastic scintillator with 3m 2 of surface and more sensitive to electromagnetic component in air shower. The full operation using 3FD stations and full SD array has started. Here we present the updated status of Telescope Array experiment.

Abstract: The Telescope Array experiment is searching for the origin of ultra-high energy cosmic rays using a ground array of particle detectors and three fluorescence telescope stations. The precise calibration of the fluorescence detectors is important for small systematic errors in shower reconstruction. This paper details the process of calibrating cameras for two of the fluorescence telescope stations. This paper provides the operational results of these camera calibrations.

Abstract: Primary ovarian lymphoma is a rare disease, and its definition is still controversial. Many cases of primary ovarian lymphoma are diagnosed as diffuse large B-cell type, whereas the precursor lymphoblastic type is extremely rare. Herein, we describe a case of precursor B-cell lymphoblastic lymphoma of the ovary that was successfully treated with surgery and chemotherapy. A 19-year-old woman presented ovarian tumors and paraaortic lymphoadenopathy, which were suggestive of advanced ovarian cancer. Exploratory laparotomy and right salpingo-oophorectomy were performed, and the diagnosis of precursor B-cell lymphoblastic lymphoma was established. The patient was treated with a combination of chemotherapy and is currently disease-free 1 year after surgery. To our best knowledge, this is the fourth reported case of precursor lymphoblastic lymphoma of the ovary.

The observatory will measure the energy spectrum, anisotropy and composition of ultra-high energy cosmic rays. Abstract: The Telescope Array (TA) experiment is the largest detector to observe ultra-high-energy cosmic rays in the northern hemisphere. The fluorescence detectors at southern two stations of TA are newly constructed and have now completed seven years of steady operation. One advantage of monocular analysis of the fluorescence detectors is a lower energy threshold for cosmic rays than that of other techniques like stereoscopic observations or coincidences with the surface detector array, allowing the measurement of an energy spectrum covering three orders of magnitude in energy. Analyzing data collected during those seven years, we report the energy spectrum of cosmic rays covering a broad range of energies above 10$^{17.2}$ eV measured by the fluorescence detectors and a comparison with previously published results., Submitted to Astroparticle Physics

Abstract: The 17beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenases (HSDs) are enzymes that catalyze the reduction of 17-ketosteroids or the oxidation of 17beta-hydroxysteroids. 17beta-HSD type 12, the most recently cloned member of this gene family, was classified into the 17beta-HSD family based on sequence homology, rather than steroid catalyzing activity. Meanwhile, it has been reported that 17beta-HSD type 12 may be involved in fatty acid synthesis. To better understand the role of 17beta-HSD type 12 in lipid metabolism, we determined the detailed systemic distribution and tissue localizations of 17beta-HSD type 12, which, due partly to the lack of antibodies, had not yet been studied. We carried out these investigations by quantitative reverse transcription (RT)-PCR, Northern blot analysis, and immunohistochemistry, using an antibody against 17beta-HSD type 12 that we have generated. 17beta-HSD type 12 is highly expressed in organs related to lipid metabolism such as liver, kidney, heart and skeletal muscle. 17beta-HSD type 12 is also detected in endocrine-related organs such as pancreas, pituitary gland, adrenal gland, testis and placenta, and in the gastrointestinal tract, which point to the possible involvement of 17beta-HSD type 12 in the regulation of lipid biosynthesis and steroid metabolism. These results support previous reports and solidify the possibility that 17beta-HSD type 12 may play critical roles in the physiological processes, such as fatty acid synthesis, in addition to the steroid metabolism.

Abstract: We present measurements of nu_mu disappearance in K2K, the KEK to Kamioka long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment. One hundred and twelve beam-originated neutrino events are observed in the fiducial volume of Super-Kamiokande with an expectation of 158.1^{+9.2}_{-8.6} events without oscillation. A distortion of the energy spectrum is also seen in 58 single-ring muon-like events with reconstructed energies. The probability that the observations are explained by the expectation for no neutrino oscillation is 0.0015% (4.3sigma). In a two flavor oscillation scenario, the allowed Delta m^2 region at sin^2(2theta) is between 1.9 and 3.5 x 10^{-3} eV^2 at the 90% C.L. with a best-fit value of 2.8 x 10^{-3} eV^2., Comment: 40 pages, 48 figures

66. Lifetime prognosis of schizophrenia: extended observation (more than 40 years) of 129 patients with typical schizophrenia

Abstract: Background: The excess mortality among patients with schizophrenia has been documented by epidemiological studies. These studies have shown that suicide accounts for most of this mortality. In contrast, the natural deaths of patients with schizophrenia have been commonly related to cardiovascular disease in these studies. Methods: In this study, the clinical features of 129 patients with typical schizophrenia were examined in order to study the lifetime prognosis of patients with schizophrenia in Japan. These patients had their first visit to Kawagoe Dojinkai Hospital in 1963 and had been continuously observed for over 40 years. Results: As at January 2003, the status of these 129 patients was categorized as follows: 27 patients were inpatients (mean age was 72.9 years), 20 patients were outpatients (mean age was 68.8 years), 2 patients were outpatients of another hospital, 20 patients had been admitted into nursing homes, 53 patients had passed away and 7 patients were missing. Clinical features were recorded for 44 (23 male patients with a mean age of 68.6 years and 21 female patients with a mean age of 64.2 years) out of the 53 patients who had passed away. The causes of death consisted of malignancy (13 cases), pneumonia (eight cases), heart failure (five cases), cerebral infarction (three cases), diabetes mellitus (three cases), cardiac infarction (two cases), ileus (two cases), asphyxia (one case), liver cirrhosis (one case), gastric ulcer (one case), heat stroke (one case), homicide (one case) and suicide (three cases). Two patients were discovered to have passed away alone at home. Conclusion: The mean age of death was found to be lower than the life expectancy. However, only three patients committed suicide. These findings suggest that patients with schizophrenia may possess some biological vulnerability. Further study is needed to evaluate the effects of long-term antipsychotic medication. Clinically, medical checks for malignancy and care services for elderly patients are needed. Furthermore, in order to prevent future occurrences of patients dying alone in their own home, a social support system should be established.

Abstract: We have already demonstrated that celecoxib, a selective cyclooxygenase (COX)-2 inhibitor, has a proapoptotic effect on synovial fibroblasts obtained from patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Here we report on the development of two novel derivatives of celecoxib, N-(2-aminoethyl)-4-[5-(4-tolyl)-3-(trifluoromethyl)-1H-pyrazol-1-yl]benzenesulfonamide (TT101) and 4-[5-(4-aminophenyl)-3-(trifluoromethyl)-1H-pyrazol-1-yl]benzenesulfonamide (TT201), including whether these compounds have a proapoptotic effect on synovial fibroblasts. Synovial fibroblasts were harvested from the synovial tissues of patients with RA or osteoarthritis (OA). Cell proliferation and cell viability were assessed by the incorporation of 5-bromo-2'-deoxyuridine and by the 2-(4-iodophenyl)-3-(4-nitrophenyl)-5-(2,4-disulfophenyl)-2H-tetrazolium monosodium salt assay, respectively. Apoptosis was detected by the identification of DNA fragmentation, and activation of caspase-3 was detected by the addition of a caspase-3 substrate to cell lysates. Production of prostaglandin E(2) by RA synovial fibroblasts was analyzed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. TT101 inhibited the proliferation of RA and OA synovial fibroblasts in a concentration-dependent manner. It caused a marked decrease of cell viability and induced DNA fragmentation more potently than either celecoxib or SC-236 (4-[5-(4-chlorophenyl)-3-(trifluoromethyl)-1H-pyrazol-1-yl]benzenesulfonamide). TT101 also increased caspase-3 activity. The order of potency of the COX-2 inhibitory activity of these drugs in RA synovial fibroblasts was celecoxib = SC-236 > rofecoxib > TT201 > TT101. In conclusion, we developed TT101 with about a 5- to 10-fold stronger proapoptotic effect on RA and OA synovial fibroblasts compared with that of celecoxib. Although the mechanism of action of TT101 remains unclear, it may have potential as a novel antirheumatic agent.

Abstract: The K2K experiment observes indications of neutrino oscillation: a reduction of $\nu_\mu$ flux together with a distortion of the energy spectrum. Fifty-six beam neutrino events are observed in Super-Kamiokande (SK), 250 km from the neutrino production point, with an expectation of $80.1^{+6.2}_{-5.4}$. Twenty-nine one ring $\mu$-like events are used to reconstruct the neutrino energy spectrum, which is better matched to the expected spectrum with neutrino oscillation than without. Abstract: Using the Super-Kamiokande neutrino observatory, a search was conducted for neutrinos produced in coincidence with gamma-ray bursts observed by the BATSE detector. Super-Kamiokande data in the neutrino energy range of 7 MeV ~ 100 TeV were analyzed. For gamma-ray bursts that occurred between 1996 April and 2000 May, no statistically significant signal in excess of the background levels was detected. Abstract: The origin of the highest energy cosmic rays (≥1020 eV) is not well understood. Interesting models called "top-down" scenarios have been proposed to explain the origin. The γ-ray flux in ultra-high-energy cosmic rays is a key parameter for giving constraints on such models. To study the properties of γ-ray showers, we carry out simulation studies that take into account both the Landau-Pomeranchuk-Migdal effect and electromagnetic interactions in the geomagnetic field. Based on an analysis of muons in air showers observed by the Akeno Giant Air Shower Array, the upper limits on the γ-ray flux are estimated to be 28% above 1019 eV and 67% above 1019.5 eV in the observed air showers at a confidence level of 95%. Above 1020 eV, the primary composition is in agreement with an extrapolation from lower energies, and there is no indication that the observed events are mostly γ-ray showers. These results provide observational constraints for origin models up to the highest energies.

Abstract: 【目的】透析皮膚〓痒症の発症機序や病態に関しては未だ不明な点も多く, 種々の対策や治療が試されているにもかかわらず, 確実な治療法がないのが現状である. 今回私たちは, 維持血液透析患者における皮膚〓痒症の実態を明らかにし, 背景因子および各種臨床検査値との関連性を検討した.【対象と方法】新潟県内41施設の維持血液透析患者2474名 (年齢60.4±12.8歳, 透析期間8.2±7.5年 (平均±標準誤差)) を対象に, かゆみの程度 (5段階カテゴリー評価とvisual analogue scale (VAS: 視覚的尺度) による評価), 頻度, 部位, 時期, 睡眠障害の程度および治療内容についてのアンケート調査を実施した. さらに, 臨床検査値 (Ca, P, int-PTH, BUN, Cr, Ht) および透析膜の種類について各症例のデータを調査し, 〓痒症との関連を解析した.【結果】1801名 (72.8%) に〓痒の経験を認め, そのうち約75%が毎日〓痒感を訴えていた. 約半数に〓痒による睡眠障害を認めた. 背景因子では男性, 中高年層, 長期透析症例で, 臨床検査値ではCa≧9.7mg/dl, P≧5.6mg/dl, int-PTH≧360pg/ml, BUN≧81.2mg/dlの症例で中等度以上の〓痒を有する危険率が有意に高かった. 使用されている透析膜の種類 (ポリメチルメタアクリル膜のBG/BKシリーズ, セルローストリアセテート膜, ポリスルフォン膜) と中等度以上の〓痒を有する危険率には有意差を認めなかった.【結論】血液透析患者において皮膚〓痒症が高頻度にみられ, 睡眠障害などQOLに影響を及ぼしていることが確認された. 性別, 年齢, 透析期間, Ca, P, int-PTH, BUNと〓痒の発症に関連性を認めた.

Abstract: We present results of a search for proton decays, $p\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\overline{\ensuremath{\nu}}{K}^{+}$, using data from a $33\mathrm{kt}\ifmmode \dot{}\else \.{}\fi{}\mathrm{yr}$ exposure of the Super-Kamiokande detector. Two decay modes of the kaon, ${K}^{+}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\ensuremath{\mu}}^{+}{\ensuremath{\nu}}_{\ensuremath{\mu}}$ and ${K}^{+}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{0}$, were studied. The data were consistent with the background expected from atmospheric neutrinos; therefore a lower limit on the partial lifetime of the proton $\ensuremath{\tau}/B(p\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\overline{\ensuremath{\nu}}{K}^{+})$ was found to be $6.7\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{32}\mathrm{years}$ at $90%$ confidence level.

Abstract: A total of 614 upward through-going muons of minimum energy 1.6 GeV are observed by Super-Kamiokande during 537 detector live days. The measured muon flux is 1.74+/-0.07(stat.)+/-0.02(sys.)x10^{-13}cm^{-2}s^{-1}sr^{-1} compared to an expected flux of 1.97+/-0.44(theo.)x10^{-13}cm^{-2}s^{-1}sr^{-1}. The absolute measured flux is in agreement with the prediction within the errors. However, the zenith angle dependence of the observed upward through-going muon flux does not agree with no-oscillation predictions. The observed distortion in shape is consistent with the \nu_\mu \nu_\tau oscillation hypothesis with \sin^22\theta > 0.4 and 1x10^{-3} < \Delta m^2 < 1x10^{-1} eV^{2} at 90% confidence level., Comment: 8 pages w/ 3 figures new version contains minor fixes, as it appears in PRL

Abstract: We have searched for proton decay via $p\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{e}^{+}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{0}$ using data from a $25.5\mathrm{kton}\ifmmode \dot{}\else \.{}\fi{}\mathrm{yr}$ exposure of the Super-Kamiokande detector. We find no candidate events with an expected background induced by atmospheric neutrinos of 0.1 events. From these data, we set a lower limit on the partial lifetime of the proton $\ensuremath{\tau}{/B}_{p\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{e}^{+}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{0}}$ to be $1.6\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{33}\mathrm{years}$ at a 90% confidence level.

Abstract: Spherical harmonic moments are well-suited for capturing anisotropy at any scale in the flux of cosmic rays. An unambiguous measurement of the full set of spherical harmonic coefficients requires full-sky coverage. This can be achieved by combining data from observatories located in both the northern and southern hemispheres. To this end, a joint analysis using data recorded at the Telescope Array and the Pierre Auger Observatory above 1019 eV is presented in this work. The resulting multipolar expansion of the flux of cosmic rays allows us to perform a series of anisotropy searches, and in particular to report on the angular power spectrum of cosmic rays above 1019 eV. No significant deviation from isotropic expectations is found throughout the analyses performed. Upper limits on the amplitudes of the dipole and quadrupole moments are derived as a function of the direction in the sky, varying between 7% and 13% for the dipole and between 7% and 10% for a symmetric quadrupole., Facultad de Ciencias Exactas

Abstract: Previous measurements of the composition of Ultra-High Energy Cosmic Rays(UHECRs) made by the High Resolution Fly's Eye(HiRes) and Pierre Auger Observatory(PAO) are seemingly contradictory, but utilize different detection methods, as HiRes was a stereo detector and PAO is a hybrid detector. The five year Telescope Array(TA) Middle Drum hybrid composition measurement is similar in some, but not all, respects in methodology to PAO, and good agreement is evident between data and a light, largely protonic, composition when comparing the measurements to predictions obtained with the QGSJetII-03 and QGSJet-01c models. These models are also in agreement with previous HiRes stereo measurements, confirming the equivalence of the stereo and hybrid methods. Abstract: We search for ultra-high energy photons by analyzing geometrical properties of shower fronts of events registered by the Telescope Array surface detector. By making use of an event-by-event statistical method, we derive upper limits on the absolute flux of primary photons with energies above ${10}^{19}$, ${10}^{19.5}$, and ${10}^{20}\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{eV}$ based on the first three years of data taken.

Abstract: Two experiments for the detections of Molecular Bremsstrahlung Radiation (MBR) from air-shower are under development in West Japan. One of these systems consists of 12 parabola antennas. And the other one uses a 45 cm Broadcasting Satellite (BS) antenna in a scintillator array. Both experiments measure 12 GHz radio emission from air-showers. The setup and the status of these experiments will be reported.

Abstract: The Telescope Array (TA) experiment, located in the western desert of Utah, USA, is designed for the observation of extensive air showers from extremely high energy cosmic rays. The experiment has a surface detector array surrounded by three fluorescence detectors to enable simultaneous detection of shower particles at ground level and fluorescence photons along the shower track. The TA surface detectors and fluorescence detectors started full hybrid observation in March, 2008. Abstract: Atypical polypoid adenomyoma is a rare uterine tumor composed of atypical endometrial glands, which often exhibit squamous metaplasia, and a cellular smooth muscle stroma. Although atypical polypoid adenomyoma is categorized as a benign lesion, it is reportedly associated with endometrial cancer, and it shows persistence and recurrence even after conservative medical treatment. We present a rare case of atypical polypoid adenomyoma that possibly underwent a serial pathological change from endometrial hyperplasia to carcinoma in a 40-year-old woman with no history of pregnancy. She was diagnosed with atypical polypoid adenomyoma during polypectomy surgery. After resecting the atypical polypoid adenomyoma, endometrial hyperplasia complex was detected. This condition eventually progressed from atypical hyperplasia complex to endometrial adenocarcinoma, and total abdominal hysterectomy was performed. A patient with atypical polypoid adenomyoma who wishes to preserve her fertility should be carefully monitored for endometrial carcinoma. If endometrial hyperplasia is detected in such a patient, a meticulous follow-up examination by performing endometrial biopsy is mandatory.

Abstract: The Telescope Array (TA) experiment detects air showers induced by extremely high energy cosmic rays in the middle west of Utah, USA. The TA experiment consists of two different types of detector such as atmospheric fluorescence detectors (FDs) and surface array particle detectors (SDs). The SD observation started in March 2008. This paper describes the search for the small scale clusters from 850‐days TA SD data by auto‐correlation method for several energy thresholds. As a result, there is no indication of small scale clusters by TA SD.

Abstract: We compared the detection rate of cervical neoplasias between a liquid-based cytology (LBC) method using SurePath and the conventional method. We also studied the feasibility of human papillomavirus (HPV) typing by linear array assay. Cytological specimens from 1551 Japanese women were prepared using the conventional and SurePath methods; the cytological and histological results from biopsy samples were compared. HPV typing using an HPV linear array assay was carried out on residual specimens using the SurePath method. The cytodiagnostic results showed a concordance rate of 85.3% (Κ= 0.46) between the two methods. The sensitivity of lesions histopathologically diagnosed as CIN1 or above was not significantly different between the two methods (P = 0.575-1.000). The receiver operating characteristic curve analysis of the detectability in CIN2 or above revealed no significant difference between the two methods (P = 0.096). Among the 44 patients who underwent HPV typing using a linear array assay, 33 samples were eligible for HPV testing and were stored at ambient temperature. In conclusion, the SurePath and conventional methods have equivalent abilities for detecting cervical lesions. After preparation for cytological diagnosis, use of the remaining cells from the SurePath specimens to perform HPV typing using the linear array method could be feasible.

Abstract: Adenomatoid tumors are rare benign mesothelial tumors of the genital tract, and only a few cases of uterine adenomatoid tumors treated at laparoscopic surgery have been reported. Herein is reported the case of a laparoscopically resected uterine adenomatoid tumor with coexisting endometriosis. A 34-year-old nulliparous woman with suspected uterine fibroma and endometrial cysts underwent laparoscopic surgery in which both the uterine tumor and the endometrial cysts were enucleated. Enucleation of the uterine tumor was difficult, and, therefore, the border between the tumor and normal myometrium was divided using a harmonic scalpel for tumor resection. Microscopic examination of the tumor showed irregularly proliferating smooth muscle cells and many round hiatuses lined by epithelial-like cells. These epithelial-like cells were immunohistochemically positive for mesothelin and podoplanin, and negative for CD34, which suggests that the tumor was an adenomatoid tumor. This may be the fourth reported case of an adenomatoid tumor resected using the laparoscopic approach.

Abstract: Supraclavicular lymph node metastasis is a rare presentation of primary fallopian tube carcinoma. A 76-year-old woman presented with an enlarged supraclavicular lymph node. A biopsy was performed, and its findings confirmed metastatic adenocarcinoma. Subsequent exploratory laparotomy revealed right fallopian tube carcinoma as the primary lesion; consequently, right salpingo-oophorectomy was performed. After adjuvant chemotherapy, she underwent a laparotomy with total abdominal hysterectomy, left salpingo-oophorectomy, pelvic and para-aortic lymph node sampling, and omentectomy. Supraclavicular lymph node metastasis was thought to be, although rarely, the first manifestation of primary fallopian tube carcinoma (PFTC). When supraclavicular lymph node metastasis of an unknown origin is encountered, the possibility of PFTC should be considered.

Abstract: BackgroundIncreased triglyceride (TG)-rich lipoproteins and decreased HDL that are implicated in the progression of atherosclerotic vascular diseases, are present in serum samples of patients undergoing haemodialysis (HD) therapy. Therefore, it is important to measure serum TG-rich lipoprotein concentrations to prevent the diseases.MethodsThe cholesterol concentrations of lipoprotein classes in serum samples from the HD patients ( n = 18) and healthy subjects ( n = 18) were analysed by our recently developed method of high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), in which the lipoprotein classes were separated using an anion-exchange column, and the cholesterol concentrations of each of those were measured enzymatically using a post-column reaction. The ability of fractionated lipoprotein cholesterol determination by this HPLC method is mostly equivalent to the determination ability of an ultracentrifugation (UC).ResultsHDL, LDL, and TG-rich lipoproteins, i.e. IDL, VLDL and chylomicrons, were well separated in the chromatograms. HDL cholesterol concentrations in the HD patients were significantly lower than in the healthy subjects ( P < 0.0001), and IDL cholesterol concentrations and VLDL cholesterol concentrations in the HD patients were significantly higher than in the healthy subjects ( P < 0.05). Profiles of these measured lipoprotein values were consistent with the previously reported lipoprotein values, measured ultracentrifugally characteristic of HD patients.ConclusionThese results suggest that the HPLC method may be sufficiently applied to the assessment of serum lipoprotein profile in HD patients in place of the other method including an UC.

Abstract: Celecoxib, a selective cyclooxygenase (COX)-2 inhibitor, has a pro-apoptotic effect on colon adenocarcinoma cells via COX-independent mechanisms.The pro-apoptotic effect of N-(2-Aminoethyl)-4-[5- (4-tolyl)-3-(trifluoromethyl)-1H-pyrazol-1-yl] benzenesulfonamide (TT101), a new derivative of celecoxib, was investigated on the HT-29 and SW480 colon adenocarcinoma cells. Cell proliferation and viability were assessed by incorporation of 5-bromo-2'-deoxyuridine and by the 2-(4-Iodophenyl)-3-(4-nitrophenyl)-5-(2,4-disulfophenyl)-2H-tetrazolium monosodium salt assay, respectively. Apoptosis was detected by identifying DNA fragmentation. Production of prostaglandin E2 by the HT-29 cells was analyzed.TT101 inhibited the proliferation of HT-29 and SW480 cells by inducing apoptosis more potently than celecoxib in a concentration-dependent manner. The COX-2 inhibitory effect of TT101 was weaker than that of celecoxib.A slight modification of celecoxib enhanced the pro-apoptotic effect on colon adenocarcinoma cells.

Abstract: A search for a non-zero neutrino magnetic moment has been conducted using 1496 live days of solar neutrino data from {\SK}. Specifically, we searched for distortions to the energy spectrum of recoil electrons arising from magnetic scattering due to a non-zero neutrino magnetic moment. In the absence of clear signal, we found $\mu_{\nu} \leq 3.6 \times 10^{-10}$ $\mu_{B}$ at 90% C.L. by fitting to the Super-Kamiokande day/night spectra. The fitting took into account the effect of neutrino oscillation on the shapes of energy spectra. With additional information from other solar neutrino and KamLAND experiments constraining the oscillation region, a limit of $\mu_{\nu} \leq 1.1 \times 10^{-10}$ $\mu_{B}$ at 90% C.L. was obtained., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

Abstract: We present the results of indirect searches for Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs) with 1679.6 live days of data from the Super-Kamiokande detector using neutrino-induced upward through-going muons. The search is performed by looking for an excess of high energy muon neutrinos from WIMP annihilations in the Sun, the core of the Earth, and the Galactic Center, as compared to the number expected from the atmospheric neutrino background. No statistically significant excess was seen. We calculate flux limits in various angular cones around each of the above celestial objects. We obtain conservative model-independent upper limits on WIMP-nucleon cross-section as a function of WIMP mass and compare these results with the corresponding results from direct dark matter detection experiments., 10 pages, 14 figures, Submitted to Phys. Abstract: The terminal oxygenase component of the biphenyl dioxygenase (BphA1A2 complex) was over-expressed with a novel over expression system in recombinant Rhodococcus strain and purified. The purified enzyme has been crystallized by the hanging drop vapor diffusion method and subjected to X-ray diffraction analysis. The crystals belong to the tetragonal system in the space group P4 1 2 1 2 or P4 3 2 1 2 and diffract to better than 2.2A resolution.

Abstract: We present the results of a search for low energy nu(e) from the Sun using 1496 days of data from Super-Kamiokande-I. We observe no significant excess of events and set an upper limit for the conversion probability to nu(e) of the 8B solar neutrino. This conversion limit is 0.8% (90% C.L.) of the standard solar model's neutrino flux for total energy=8-20 MeV. We also set a flux limit for monochromatic nu(e) for E(nu(e))=10-17 MeV.

Abstract: The east-west anisotropy, caused by the deflection of primary cosmic rays in the Earth's magnetic field, is observed for the first time in the flux of atmospheric neutrinos. Using a 45 kt-year exposure of the Super-Kamiokande detector, 552 e-like and 633 mu-like horizontally-going events are selected in the momentum range between 400 and 3000 MeV/c. Abstract: The Telescope Array (TA) collaboration has measured the energy spectrum of ultra-high energy cosmic rays with primary energies above 1.6 x 10^(18) eV. This measurement is based upon four years of observation by the surface detector component of TA. The spectrum shows a dip at an energy of 4.6 x 10^(18) eV and a steepening at 5.4 x 10^(19) eV which is consistent with the expectation from the GZK cutoff. We present the results of a technique, new to the analysis of ultra-high energy cosmic ray surface detector data, that involves generating a complete simulation of ultra-high energy cosmic rays striking the TA surface detector. The procedure starts with shower simulations using the CORSIKA Monte Carlo program where we have solved the problems caused by use of the "thinning" approximation. This simulation method allows us to make an accurate calculation of the acceptance of the detector for the energies concerned., Comment: Accepted for publication by Astrophysical Journal Letters

Abstract: Microwave radiation from extensive air showers is expected to provide a new technique to observe UHECR. We developed three set of radio telescopes in Osaka, in Kobe and at Telescope Array site in Utah, USA. In Osaka, we are coincidentally operating two Ku band radio telescopes with an air shower array which consists of nine plastic scintillators with about 10 m separation. In Kobe, we have started the operation of twelve radio telescopes of 1.2 m diameter in March 2012. In Utah, we installed two telescopes just beside the Black Rock Mesa fluorescence detector (FD) station of the Telescope Array experiment, and we operated the radio telescopes coincidentally with FD event triggers. We report the experimental setups and the results of these measurements.

Abstract: Telescope Array (TA) is a hybrid detector of a surface detector array and fluorescence telescopes. This hybrid detector will measure the energy spectrum, anisotropy and composition of ultra-high energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) to identify their origin. The almost construction of the detector has been completed in May 2007, and the detector is running under test and adjustments. The first hybrid observation with the full configuration is planned in beginning of 2008. In this paper the status and prospects of TA detector is described.
