cardiovascular ,CKD ,magnesium ,mortality - Abstract
Magnesium (Mg) is one of the most important cations in the body, playing an essential role in biological systems as co-factor for more than 300 essential enzymatic reactions. In the general population, low levels of Mg are associated with a high risk of cardio-vascular disease (CVD). Despite the accumulating literature data, the effect of Mg administration on mortality in chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients has never been investigated as a primary end-point. We conducted a systematic search of studies assessing the benefits and harms of Mg in CKD (stages 1 to 5 and 5D), and considered all randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and quasi-RCTs evaluating Mg-based interventions in CKD. As a phosphate binder, Mg salts offer a plausible opportunity for doubly favorable effects via reduction of intestinal phosphate absorption and addition of potentially beneficial effects via increasing circulating Mg levels. Mg supplementation might have a favorable effect on vascular calcification, although evidence for this is very slight. Although longitudinal data describe an association between low serum Mg levels and increased total and cardiovascular mortality, in patients with CKD, the existing RCTs reporting the effect of Mg supplementation on mortality failed to demonstrate any favorable effect. As with many other variables that influence hard end-points in nephrology, the role of Mg in CKD patients needs to be investigated in more depth. Additional research that is well-designed and directly targeting the role of Mg is needed as a consequence of limited existing evidence.

The liquid phase epitaxy and characterization of single crystal (210)-oriented thin garnet films with Bi substitution is described. It is shown that the increase in the amount of Pr has increased the in-plane orthorhombic anisotropy field, while the rare-earth substitution by Bi has affected the canted orthorhombic anisotropy.

(Bi-Gd-Lu)-based melts are proposed to grow single-crystal iron garnet thin films with in-plane magnetization and high Bi incorporation on gadolinium gallium garnet substrates with expanded crystallographic phase. The results of characterization of the magnetic and optical properties of the garnet films suggest that the growth process is controlled mainly by Gd diffusion with Lu reducing the Gd activity, thus decreasing the saturation temperatures of the melts and enhancing the Bi incorporation.

- Abstract
An accurate estimation of tsunami-induced forces on nearshore structures is an important step towards the design of tsunami-resilient buildings. The University of Ottawa, in collaboration with the Canadian Hydraulics Centre (CHC) of the National Research Council, located in Ottawa, has established a comprehensive experimental and numerical modeling program focusing on tsunami-structure interaction with the ultimate goal of improving tsunami mitigation methods and strategies. As part of this experimental program, the authors conducted laboratory tests on the impact of extreme hydrodynamic forces and floating debris on two structural models with different cross sections (square and circular). These structures were subjected to supercritical hydraulic bores that are similar to ones generated by broken tsunami waves advancing inland. The structural models were instrumented with sensors capable of recording time histories of the hydraulic bore depth, as well as the lateral displacement, acceleration, pressures, forces, and moments imposed on the two structural models. The bore depth and bore velocity were recorded and analyzed, and the bore-structure interaction was also investigated. The time histories of the impact force resulting from wooden debris hitting the structural models were also recorded and analyzed. The authors further investigated existing formulas provided by the most recent tsunami-resistant engineering design guideline (FEMA P-646, 2012) and the Coastal Construction Manual (FEMA P-55, 2011) to compare the experimentally-recorded hydrodynamic and debris impact forces with current prescriptions., Annual Conference of the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering 2013: Know-How - Savoir-Faire, May 29-June 1 2013, Montreal, QC, Canada

- Abstract
This paper describes the development, calibration and application of a numerical model of the hydrodynamic and sedimentary processes at a dynamic tidal inlet known as Shippagan Gully, located on the Gulf of St-Lawrence near Le Goulet, New Brunswick. The new model has been developed to provide guidance concerning the response of the inlet mouth to various potential interventions aimed at increasing navigation safety. The new model is based on coupling the most recent CMS-Flow and CMSWave models developed by the US Army Corps of Engineers. The coupled model is capable of simulating the depth-averaged currents generated within Shippagan Gully and along the neighbouring coastline due to the effects of tides, winds and waves; the transport of non-cohesive sediments; and the resulting changes in seabed morphology. The development of the model and the steps taken to calibrate and validate it against field measurements are described. The application of the model to predict the coastal processes and the response of the inlet mouth to several storms is described and discussed. The influences of storm direction and storm surge on coastal processes is presented and discussed. The research described herein will contribute to an improved understanding of the hydrodynamics and sedimentary processes at strongly ebb-dominated tidal inlets in general and Shippagan Gully in particular., Annual Conference of the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering 2013: Know-How - Savoir-Faire, May 29-June 1 2013, Montreal, QC, Canada

- Abstract
Over the past seven years, a comprehensive interdisciplinary research program has been conducted between researchers at the University of Ottawa and at the Canadian Hydraulics Centre (CHC) of the National Research Council of Canada. The objectives of this on-going research program are to identify and quantify forces that are imposed on near-shoreline structures when exposed to tsunamiinduced hydraulic bores and to investigate mitigation strategies to dampen these forces. The experimental component of this research program involves two structural models (square and circular) that are tested in the High Discharge Flume at CHC. The structural models are instrumented to record base shear force-, base overturning moment-, pressure-, acceleration-, lateral displacement- and bore depth-time histories continually during testing. Impact loading resulting from wood debris of different sizes and located at pre-determined distances from the structural models is also studied. Furthermore, this research program aims to review tsunami-induced forces on structures prescribed by recent design documents.

A study of the non linear modes of a two degree of freedom mechanical system with bilateral elastic stop is considered. The issue related to the non-smoothness of the impact force is handled through a regularization technique. In order to obtain the Nonlinear Normal Mode (NNM), the harmonic balance method with a large number of harmonics, combined with the asymptotic numerical method, is used to solve the regularized problem. These methods are present in the software "package" MANLAB. The results are validated from periodic orbits obtained analytically in the time domain by direct integration of the non regular problem. The two NNMs starting respectively from the two linear normal modes of the associated underlying linear system are discussed. The energy-frequency plot is used to present a global vision of the behavior of the modes. The dynamics of the modes are also analyzed comparing each periodic orbits and modal lines. The first NNM shows an elaborate dynamics with the occurrence of multiple impacts per period. On the other hand, the second NNM presents a more simple dynamics with a localization of the displacement on the first mass.

Shippagan Gully is a highly engineered, tidal inlet located near Shippagan, New Brunswick, on the Gulf of St. Lawrence. It is a particularly complex tidal inlet due to the fact that its tidal lagoon transects the Acadian peninsula and is open to the Bay des Chaleurs at its opposite end. As such, two open boundaries with phase lagged tidal cycles drive flow through the inlet, alternating direction with each tide and reaching velocities exceeding 2 m/s. Over the past century, despite various engineered interventions, shipping practices through the inlet have been threatened due to the increasing constriction from sediment which has accumulated on the east side of the navigation channel. In addition to highly asymmetrical sediment deposition patterns, severe downdrift erosion suggests the presence of prominent westward net longshore transport, further complicating the coastal morphology at the inlet. Due to the overwhelming requirement for constant maintenance dredging and the long-term degradation of existing coastal structures, a numerical model study of Shippagan Gully has been undertaken in order to identify principal morphology mechanisms and provide guidance for future coastal works. The numerical models CMS Wave and CMS Flow (USACE) have been applied in a coupled manner to simulate the hydrodynamics, coastal processes and morphology changes at the inlet due to the combined effects of waves and tides. Once calibrated to historical morphologic evolution, the coupled models were used to identify the forces driving the morphological changes shaping Shippagan Gully. The methodology and selected results of this study are presented herein., Annual Conference of the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering 2011, CSCE 2011, 14 June 2011 through 17 June 2011, Ottawa, ON

The Bay of Fundy is home to some of the world's largest tides and has long been identified as one of the world's premier locations for the installation of tidal power generating systems. This paper deals with the assessment of hydrodynamic impacts throughout the Bay of Fundy and Gulf of Maine due to power generation by tidal lagoons located in Minas Basin. The lagoon concept involves temporarily storing seawater behind an impoundment dike and generating power by gradually releasing the seawater through conventional low-head hydroelectric turbines. Tidal lagoons represent a relatively novel approach to tidal power generation, and are intended to achieve high efficiency while avoiding some of the environmental problems associated with tidal barrages. A detailed two-dimensional (depth-averaged) finite-element numerical model, based on the TELEMAC system, has been developed, calibrated against observed water levels and velocities, and applied to simulate tidal hydrodynamics throughout the Bay of Fundy and Gulf of Maine, both for existing conditions without a lagoon and for two scenarios with tidal lagoons operating in Minas Basin. A 12 km 2 offshore lagoon with 14 turbines generating ∼124 MW on average and a 24 km 2 coastal lagoon with 24 turbines generating ∼220 MW on average have been investigated. This paper provides a summary of the work that has been performed to date and presents results describing the local and far-field changes in water levels and tidal currents due to tidal lagoons operating in the upper Bay of Fundy., Annual Conference of the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering 2011, CSCE 2011, 14 June 2011 through 17 June 2011, Ottawa, ON

International audience; The extended finite element method (X-FEM) has been developed to minimize requirements on the mesh design in a problem with a displacement discontinuity. This advantage, however, still remains limited to the small deformation hypothesis when considering sliding discontinuities. The approach presented in this paper proposes to couple X-FEM with a Lagrangian large sliding frictionless contact algorithm. A new hybrid X-FEM contact element was developed with a contact search algorithm allowing for all update of contacting surfaces pairing. The stability of the contact formulation is ensured by an algorithm for fulfilling Ladyzhenskaya-Babuska-Brezzi (LBB) condition. Several 2D simple examples are presented in this paper in order to prove its efficiency and stability.
