Compared with the traditional ensemble feature selection methods, the recently-developed ensemble feature selection with block-regularized [m×2] cross-validation (EFSBCV) not only has a variance of the estimator smaller than that of random [m×2] cross-validation, but also enhances the selection probability of important features and reduces the selection probability of noise features. However, the adopted linear regression model without the use of the bias term in EFSBCV may easily lead to underfitting. Moreover, EFSBCV does not consider the importance of each feature subset. Aiming at these two problems, an ensemble feature selection method called EFSFT (ensemble feature selection method using fast transfer model) is proposed in this paper. The basic idea is that the base feature selector in EFSBCV adopts the fast transfer model in this paper, so as to introduce the bias term. EFSFT transfers 2m subsets of features as the source knowledge, and then recalculates the weight of each feature subset, and the linear model fitting ability with the addition of bias terms is better. The results on real datasets show that compared with EFSBCV, the average FP value by EFSFT reduces up to 58%, proving that EFSFT has more advantages in removing noise features. In contrast to least-squares support vector machine (LSSVM), the average TP value by EFSFT increases up to 5%, which clearly indicates the superiority of EFSFT over LSSVM in choosing important features.

As Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) become increasingly intelligent, facial expression recognition (FER) has become a significant requirement for the purpose of monitoring a driver’s emotional state as well as fatigue level. An automobile system with FER is very useful in improving transportation safety by recognizing the driver’s state to provide timely alerts and potentially reduce the likelihood of accidents. While deep neural networks (DNN) based systems have achieved high accuracy in FER in recent years based on data collected under good laboratory environments, recognizing real-world facial expressions remains challenging due to variations in lighting and head pose especially prevalent in the driving scenario. In this paper, we propose an attention-based multi-modal and multi-view fusion FER model that can accurately recognize facial expressions regardless of lighting conditions or head poses, using image data of various modalities including RGB, Near-infrared (NIR), and Depth Maps from different viewpoints. The model is developed on a novel facial expression dataset we collected that includes multiple modalities captured from multiple viewpoints, with varying lighting conditions and head poses. Our multi-modal and multi-view fusion approach shows superior performance compared with models that use data from a single modality/view. The model achieves an accuracy of over 95% when recognizing drivers’ facial expressions in real-world scenarios, even in poor lighting conditions and different head poses.

Abstract This study investigates the potential of ellagic acid (EA), a phytochemical with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, in managing perioperative neurocognitive disorders (PND). PND, which represents a spectrum of cognitive impairments often faced by elderly patients, is principally linked to surgical and anesthesia procedures, and heavily impacted by oxidative stress in the hippocampus and microglia-induced neuroinflammation. Employing an aged mice model subjected to abdominal surgery, we delve into EA's ability to counteract postoperative oxidative stress and cerebral inflammation by engaging the Insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) pathway. Our findings revealed that administering EA orally notably alleviated post-surgical cognitive decline in older mice, a fact that was manifested in improved performance during maze tests. This enhancement in the behavioral performance of the EA-treated mice corresponded with the rejuvenation of IGF-1 signaling, a decrease in oxidative stress markers in the hippocampus (like MDA and carbonylated protein), and an increase in the activity of antioxidant enzymes such as SOD and CAT. Alongside these, we observed a decrease in microglia-driven neuroinflammation in the hippocampus, thus underscoring the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory roles of EA. Interestingly, when EA was given in conjunction with an IGF1R inhibitor, these benefits were annulled, accentuating the pivotal role that the IGF-1 pathway plays in the neuroprotective potential of EA. Hence, EA could serve as a potent candidate for safeguarding against PND in older patients by curbing oxidative stress and neuroinflammation through the activation of the IGF-1 pathway.

[INLINE:1] Neonatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy is often associated with permanent cerebral palsy, neurosensory impairments, and cognitive deficits, and there is no effective treatment for complications related to hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy. The therapeutic potential of human placental chorionic plate-derived mesenchymal stem cells for various diseases has been explored. However, the potential use of human placental chorionic plate-derived mesenchymal stem cells for the treatment of neonatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy has not yet been investigated. In this study, we injected human placental chorionic plate-derived mesenchymal stem cells into the lateral ventricle of a neonatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy rat model and observed significant improvements in both cognitive and motor function. Protein chip analysis showed that interleukin-3 expression was significantly elevated in neonatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy model rats. Following transplantation of human placental chorionic plate-derived mesenchymal stem cells, interleukin-3 expression was downregulated. To further investigate the role of interleukin-3 in neonatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy, we established an in vitro SH-SY5Y cell model of hypoxic-ischemic injury through oxygen-glucose deprivation and silenced interleukin-3 expression using small interfering RNA. We found that the activity and proliferation of SH-SY5Y cells subjected to oxygen-glucose deprivation were further suppressed by interleukin-3 knockdown. Furthermore, interleukin-3 knockout exacerbated neuronal damage and cognitive and motor function impairment in rat models of hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy. The findings suggest that transplantation of hpcMSCs ameliorated behavioral impairments in a rat model of hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy, and this effect was mediated by interleukin-3-dependent neurological function.

Abstract We study correlations between geometric subfactors living on the Ryu-Takayanagi surface that bounds the entanglement wedge. Using the surface-state correspondence and the bit threads program, we are able to calculate mutual information and conditional mutual information between subfactors. This enables us to count the shared Bell pairs between subfactors, and we propose an entanglement distillation procedure over these subsystems via a SWAP gate protocol. We comment on extending to multipartite entanglement.

Abstract The COVID-19 outbreak caused by SARS-CoV-2 in late 2019 has spread rapidly across the world to form a global epidemic of respiratory infectious diseases. Increased investigations on diagnostic tools are currently implemented to assist rapid identification of the virus because mass and rapid diagnosis might be the best way to prevent the outbreak of the virus. This critical review discusses the detection principles, fabrication techniques, and applications on the rapid detection of SARS-CoV-2 with three categories: rapid nuclear acid augmentation test, rapid immunoassay test and biosensors. Special efforts were put on enhancement of nanomaterials on biosensors for rapid, sensitive, and low-cost diagnostics of SARS-CoV-2 virus. Future developments are suggested regarding potential candidates in hospitals, clinics and laboratories for control and prevention of large-scale epidemic. Graphical Abstract

The central nervous system (CNS) has been considered an immunologically privileged site. In the past few decades, research on inflammation in CNS diseases has mostly focused on microglia, innate immune cells that respond rapidly to injury and infection to maintain CNS homeostasis. Discoveries of lymphatic vessels within the dura mater and peripheral immune cells in the meningeal layer indicate that the peripheral immune system can monitor and intervene in the CNS. This review summarizes recent advances in the involvement of T lymphocytes in multiple CNS diseases, including brain injury, neurodegenerative diseases, and psychiatric disorders. It emphasizes that a deep understanding of the pathogenesis of CNS diseases requires intimate knowledge of T lymphocytes. Aiming to promote a better understanding of the relationship between the immune system and CNS and facilitate the development of therapeutic strategies targeting T lymphocytes in neurological diseases.

Abstract While the mechanism of general anesthesia has been extensively studied, the underlying neural circuitry has yet to be fully understood. The parabrachial nucleus (PBN) plays a crucial role in modulating wakefulness and promoting arousal from general anesthesia. However, the specific role of PBN projections in the process of general anesthesia remains unclear. In this study, we bilaterally injected AAV-associated viruses encoding excitatory or inhibitory optogenetic probes into the PBN and implanted optical fibers in the LH or BF area. After four weeks, we optogenetically activated or inhibited the PBN-LH and PBN-BF pathways under 1.5 vol% isoflurane. We calculated the time it took for anesthesia induction and emergence, simultaneously monitoring changes in the burst-suppression ratio using electroencephalogram recording. Our findings indicate that optogenetic activation of the PBN-LH and PBN-BF projections plays a significant role in promoting both cortical and behavioral emergence from isoflurane inhalation, without significantly affecting the induction time. Conversely, photoinhibition of these pathways prolonged the recovery time, with no notable difference observed during the induction phase. In summary, our results demonstrate that the PBN-LH and PBN-BF pathways are crucial for promoting arousal from isoflurane general anesthesia, but do not have a pronounced impact on the induction phase.

Directed energy deposition (DED) is gaining widespread acceptance in various industrial applications since its unique manufacturing features allow the DED to print metallic parts with very complex geometries. However, DED inevitably generates a lot of internal pores which can limit the widespread applications of the DED technique. The current studies on DED porosity are mostly focused on analyzing pores’ bulk-scale influences on mechanical properties and performances. Since DED pores have a micro-scale existence, with dimensions ranging from a few microns to several hundred microns, it is fundamental to explore the pores’ influences on the micro-scale, including local mechanical properties, residual stress, and grains near pores. However, this important research direction has been neglected. The objective of this work is to fill the above gap in DED porosity research and acquire a fundamental understanding of the role of porosity on a microscopic scale. The authors used nanoindentation approaches to investigate internal pores’ effects on mechanical properties and residual stress in local regions surrounding the pores. In addition, the grains near pores were observed through EBSD, and simulated with the Kinetic Monte Carlo model. The research findings can be provided for DED researchers and industrial practitioners as technical guidance. Most importantly, the research results can work as a good reference for tracing the source of bulk-scale mechanical performances and properties of DED parts with internal pores.

Cross-border e-commerce platform (CBECP) plays a very important role in the development of a cross-border e-commerce (CBEC). How to select the best CBECP scientifically and reasonably is a very critical multi-attribute group decision-making (MAGDM) issue. With the uncertainty of people’s cognition of the objective world, the decision-making process is full of a lot of fuzzy information. In view of the great advantages of probabilistic dual hesitation fuzzy set (FS) in expressing decision-making information, and in combination with the very extensive use of the Dice similarity measure (DSM), a new MAGDM method is proposed for the optimal CBECP selection (CBECPS) under the probabilistic dual hesitation fuzzy (PDHF) environment. First, on the basis of reviewing a large number of documents on the CBECPS for CBEC, the evaluation index system for the CBECPS is constructed; second, several new DSMs are proposed in the PDHF environment; third, based on the two newly proposed probabilistic dual hesitant weighted generalized Dice similarity measures, two novel MAGDM methods are provided for CBECPS, which are used for CBECPS; finally, the two established MAGDM techniques are compared with the existing decision-making methods, and the parameter analysis is carried out to illustrate the effectiveness and superiority of the two established MAGDM techniques. The two established techniques can not only be used for CBECPS of CBEC, but also be extended to similar related research.

Micro-pore structure affects the fluid storage and seepage in coal seams.In this paper, six samples from the Jurassic Yan'an Formation coal seam in the Shenmu area of the Ordos Basin were taken as the object of study.The pore distribution characteristics of coal seams were jointly characterized by NMR, CO2 adsorption and N2 adsorption at multiple scales, and the connectivity and homogeneity of microscopic pores were investigated by combining multi-scale joint characiterization with CT scanning.Results show that the micro-pores of coal are the main contributors to the specific surface area and pore volume, followed by meso-pores.There is a good uniformity in the pore size distribution of the micro-pores and meso-pores by combing NMR and adsorption, while considerable differences are found in the macro-pores.Displacement NMR and CT excel in reflecting the degree of connectivity, both of which are consistent in the characterization of connectivity.Parameters such as coordination number and seepage pore ratio can effectively reflect the degree of connectivity of the sample, whose patterns of connectivity is M6>M2>M12>M15>M10>M4.The saturation of bound water shows a satisfactory positive correlation with pore-throat ratio of coal samples.It can be seen that the pore structure has a great influence on the degree of fluid migration, which is the basis for studying and evaluating gas occurrence and seepage.

Background The Index of Consciousness (IoC) is a new monitoring index of anesthesia depth reflecting the state of consciousness of the brain independently developed by China. The research on monitoring the depth of anesthesia mainly focuses on propofol, and bispectral index (BIS) is a sensitive and accurate objective index to evaluate the state of consciousness at home and abroad. This study mainly analyzed the effect of IoC on monitoring the depth of sevoflurane anesthesia and the consistency and accuracy with BIS when monitoring sevoflurane maintenance anesthesia. Objective To investigate the monitoring value of the Index of Consciousness (IoC) for the depth of sevoflurane anesthesia in laparoscopic surgery. Methods The study population consisted of 108 patients who experienced elective whole-body anesthesia procedures within the timeframe of April 2020 to June 2023 at our hospital. Throughout the anesthesia process, which encompassed induction and maintenance using inhaled sevoflurane, all patients were diligently monitored for both the Bispectral Index (BIS) and the Index of Consciousness (IoC). We conducted an analysis to assess the correlation between IoC and BIS throughout the anesthesia induction process and from the maintenance phase to the regaining of consciousness. To evaluate the predictive accuracy of IoC and BIS for the onset of unconsciousness during induction and the return of consciousness during emergence, we employed receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis. Results The mean difference between BIS and IoC, spanning from the pre-anesthesia induction phase to the completion of propofol induction, was 1.3 (95% Limits of Agreement [−53.4 to 56.0]). Similarly, during the interval from the initiation of sevoflurane inhalation to the point of consciousness restoration, the average difference between BIS and IoC was 0.3 (95% LOA [−10.8 to 11.4]). No statistically significant disparities were observed in the data acquired from the two measurement methodologies during both the anesthesia induction process and the journey from maintenance to the regaining of consciousness (P > 0.05). The outcomes of the ROC curve analysis disclosed that the areas under the curve (AUC) for prognosticating the occurrence of loss of consciousness were 0.967 (95% CI [0.935–0.999]) for BIS and 0.959 (95% CI [0.924–0.993]) for IoC, with optimal threshold values set at 81 (sensitivity: 88.10%, specificity: 92.16%) and 77 (sensitivity: 79.55%, specificity: 95.45%) correspondingly. For the prediction of recovery of consciousness, the AUCs were 0.995 (95% CI [0.987–1.000]) for BIS and 0.963 (95% CI [0.916–1.000]) for IoC, each associated with optimal cutoff values of 76 (sensitivity: 92.86%, specificity: 100.00%) and 72 (sensitivity: 86.36%, specificity: 100.00%) respectively. Conclusion The monitoring of sevoflurane anesthesia maintenance using IoC demonstrates a level of comparability to BIS, and its alignment with BIS during the maintenance phase of sevoflurane anesthesia is robust. IoC displays promising potential for effectively monitoring the depth of anesthesia.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the correlation between culprit vessel/tirofiban and reperfusion bradyarrhythmia in patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) after emergency percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 123 STEMI patients undergoing emergency PCI in our hospital from September 2018 to September 2019 were selected and divided into the reperfusion arrhythmias (RA) group (50 cases) and non-RA group (NRA, 73 cases) according to whether RA occurring during PCI. The baseline data such as age and underlying disease were statistically analyzed. Then, the differences were compared between the two groups. According to whether reperfusion bradyarrhythmia (RB) occurring during PCI, 123 STEMI patients were divided into the RB group (63 cases) and non-RB group (60 cases). The relation between culprit vessel/tirofiban and RB was analyzed. ROC curves analysis and multivariate logistic regression were conducted for the risk factors of RA and RB. RESULTS: Among 123 patients with STEMI after PCI treatment, 73 patients had RA (59.35%), including RB 63 cases and tachyarrhythmia 10 cases. Results of single factor analysis showed that there was statistical significance in 3 factors including the patient age, infarction area and vascular blood flow TIMI classification between RA group and NRA group (p<0.05). ROC curve analysis indicated that the continuous variable patent ages had predictive value in the prevalence of RA, which resulting in an AUC 0.624 and a cutoff pointed age 57 (sensitivity 72.60, specificity 52.00). Multivariate regression analysis showed that the patient age (>57 years old), infarction area in inferior wall and grade 0 lesion vascular blood flow TIMI classification in RA group was significantly higher than that in NRA group (p<0.05). Tirofiban was not associated with RB in STEMI patients treated with emergency PCI, while culprit vessel was statistically significant between RB group and NRB group (p<0.05). Multivariate regression analysis indicated that culprit vessel of the right coronary artery and grade 0 lesions vascular blood flowed TIMI classification was independent risk factors to occurring RB in the STEMI patients with emergency PCI. CONCLUSIONS: Tirofiban was not associated with RB in STEMI patients treated with emergency PCI. However, it may increase the risk of RB development when the culprit vessel is the right coronary artery. Poly(PR) is a dipeptide repeat protein comprising proline and arginine residues. It is one of the translational product of expanded G4C2 repeats in the C9orf72 gene, and its accumulation is contributing to the neuropathogenesis of C9orf72-associated amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and/or frontotemporal dementia (C9-ALS/FTD). In this study, we demonstrate that poly(PR) protein alone is sufficient to induce neurodegeneration related to ALS/FTD in cynomolgus monkeys. By delivering poly(PR) via AAV, we observed that the PR proteins were located within the nucleus of infected cells. The expression of (PR)50 protein, consisting of 50 PR repeats, led to increased loss of cortical neurons, cytoplasmic lipofuscin, and gliosis in the brain, as well as demyelination and loss of ChAT positive neurons in the spinal cord of monkeys. While, these pathologies were not observed in monkeys expressing (PR)5, a protein comprising only 5 PR repeats. Furthermore, the (PR)50-expressing monkeys exhibited progressive motor deficits, cognitive impairment, muscle atrophy, and abnormal electromyography (EMG) potentials, which closely resemble clinical symptoms seen in C9-ALS/FTD patients. By longitudinally tracking these monkeys, we found that changes in cystatin C and chitinase-1 (CHIT1) levels in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) corresponded to the phenotypic progression of (PR)50-induced disease. Proteomic analysis revealed that the major clusters of dysregulated proteins were nuclear-localized, and downregulation of the MECP2 protein was implicated in the toxic process of poly(PR). This research indicates that poly(PR) expression alone induces neurodegeneration and core phenotypes associated with C9-ALS/FTD in monkeys, which may provide insights into the mechanisms of disease pathogenesis.

AimsPermanent pacemaker implantation (PPI) combined with hypertension leads to a higher risk of new-onset atrial fibrillation (NOAF) for patients. Hence, it is essential to study how to reduce this risk. Currently, the effects of the two common anti-hypertensive drugs, angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEI)/angiotensin receptor blockers (ARB) and calcium channel blockers (CCB), on the risk of NOAF for such patients remain unknown. This study aimed to investigate this association.MethodsThis single-center retrospective study included hypertensive patients with PPI and without prior history of AF/atrial flutter, heart valve disease, hyperthyroidism, etc. Patients were classified into ACEI/ARB group and CCB group based on their exposure drug information. The primary outcome was NOAF events that occurred within 12 months after PPI. The secondary efficacy assessments were the changes from baseline to follow-up in blood pressure and transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) parameters. A multivariate logistic regression model was used to verify our aim.ResultsA total of 69 patients were finally included (51 on ACEI/ARB and 18 on CCB). Both univariate analysis [odds ratio (OR) 0.241, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.078–0.745] and multivariate analysis (OR: 0.246, 95% CI: 0.077–0.792) demonstrated that ACEI/ARB were associated with a lower risk of NOAF compared to CCB. The mean reduction in left atrial diameter (LAD) from baseline was greater in ACEI/ARB group than in CCB group (P = 0.034). There was no statistical difference between groups in blood pressure and other TTE parameters after treatment.ConclusionFor patients with PPI combined with hypertension, ACEI/ARB may be superior to CCB in selecting anti-hypertensive drugs, as ACEI/ARB further reduces the risk of NOAF. One reason for this may be that ACEI/ARB improves left atrial remodelling such as LAD better.

Accurate calibration between LiDAR and camera sensors is crucial for autonomous driving systems to perceive and understand the environment effectively. Typically, LiDAR–camera extrinsic calibration requires feature alignment and overlapping fields of view. Aligning features from different modalities can be challenging due to noise influence. Therefore, this paper proposes a targetless extrinsic calibration method for monocular cameras and LiDAR sensors that have a non-overlapping field of view. The proposed solution uses pose transformation to establish data association across different modalities. This conversion turns the calibration problem into an optimization problem within a visual SLAM system without requiring overlapping views. To improve performance, line features serve as constraints in visual SLAM. Accurate positions of line segments are obtained by utilizing an extended photometric error optimization method. Moreover, a strategy is proposed for selecting appropriate calibration methods from among several alternative optimization schemes. This adaptive calibration method selection strategy ensures robust calibration performance in urban autonomous driving scenarios with varying lighting and environmental textures while avoiding failures and excessive bias that may result from relying on a single approach.

Abstract Background Several studies have suggested that the addition of iPACK block (the popliteal artery and the posterior knee capsule have been given interspace local anesthetic infiltration) might get better analgesia than adductor canal block (ACB) only after total knee arthroplasty (TKA). This paper compiles all available evidence on the effect of two analgesia regimens (ACB and iPACK + ACB) involving all sides. Methods We searched in eight major databases for all clinical trials discussing the effect of two analgesia regimens after TKA. Statistical analyses were conducted by Stata and RevMan Software. In addition, we performed GOSH analysis, subgroup analysis, meta-regression analysis to study the source of heterogeneity. Publication bias was checked using Egger’s test. Trim-and-fill analysis was applied in terms of sensitivity analysis of the results. Results There are fourteen eligible studies for our meta-analysis. There are significant differences between the two groups in VAS score at rest and with activity, and the VAS scores were lower in the ACB + iPACK Group (VAS scores at rest: 95%CI [− 0.96, − 0.53], P
