Procedural dermatology includes invasive conventional dermatologic surgeries which involve significant use of knife and suture, minimally invasive procedures and device-based procedures. Device-based procedures are the easiest to learn and are less prone to human errors due to automation but can lead to monotony, while conventional surgeries require significant skill, craftsmanship and interest. There has been a recent shift in the approach to procedural dermatology as a therapeutic option with complementary and combination models replacing the conventional hierarchical model in which procedures were last in the step-ladder approach. The demand for both conventional dermatologic surgeries and minimally invasive cosmetic procedures is increasing. Unfortunately, this demand has not been met with adequate supply. Consequently, the number of trained professionals with expertise in these procedures is very limited; they are far outnumbered by unqualified practitioners. A limited number of dermatologic surgeons practicing conventional surgeries has resulted in huge waiting lists for vitiligo surgeries, inappropriate excisions for skin cancers and poor cosmetic outcomes of excisions without proper knowledge of flaps and grafts. Increasingly procedures are being performed by inadequately trained personnel, resulting in complications. There is also an absence of good quality research on the subject of procedural dermatology, which has resulted in a lack of standardisation of various procedures and knowledge about the efficacy of various drug-procedure and procedure-procedure combinations. An increasing variety of gimmicky but costly procedures are being offered to the public without much evidence of efficacy. Individual institutional and broad policy directives are needed to address these issues. Special emphasis is required on formal hands-on procedural dermatology training during residency and beyond it.

Abstract: In recent years, nanotechnology has gained much attention from scientists for the obtainment of significant advances in therapeutic potential. Nano-delivery systems have emerged as an effective way to improve the therapeutic properties of drugs, including solubility, stability, prolongation of half-life, as well as promoting the accumulation of drug at the target site. The nanoparticles have also been incorporated into various conventional drug delivery systems. This review study aims to introduce the amalgamation of nanoparticles into drug carriers. To overcome the limitations of single nanoparticles, such as toxicity, high instability, rapid drug release as well as limited drug loading capacity, a multi-component system is developed. Liposomes, microparticles, nanofibers, dendrimers, etc., are promising drug carriers, having some limitations that can be minimized, and the compilation of nanoparticles synergizes the properties. The amalgamated nanocarriers are used for the diagnostic purpose as well as treatment of various chronic diseases. It also increases the solubility of hydrophobic drugs. However, each system has its advantages and disadvantages based on its physicochemical properties, efficacy, and other parameters. This review details the past and present state of development for the fusion of nanoparticles within drug carriers and future research works are needed for the same.

PurposeThis study aims to develop a unified theoretical framework that presents a cohesive picture of workplace cyberbullying to better understand the interplay between cyberbullying, its effects on organizations and organizational controls enacted to contain these effects.Design/methodology/approachThe study conducts a theoretical review of the workplace cyberbullying literature between 2005 and 2021 drawing upon existing literature and two important theories, the routine activities theory and control theory. The final sample of 54 empirical papers represents a comprehensive body of literature on cyberbullying published across various disciplines.FindingsA theoretical model of workplace cyberbullying is developed, which highlights major antecedents to workplace cyberbullying and its impact on individual employees as well as organizations.Originality/valueAs firms increasingly rely on information and communication technologies (ICTs), the misuse of ICTs in the form of cyberbullying is also increasing. Workplace cyberbullying severely hurts an organization’s employees and compromises the efficacy of its information systems. Fortunately, various controls can be utilized by firms to minimize workplace cyberbullying and its attendant costs. In all, eleven propositions are offered, providing a robust agenda for future research. The authors also offer insights for practitioners on how to minimize cyberbullying in the workplace and its damaging effects.

Sesbania aculeata is a multipurpose legume crop grown primarily for green manuring in the rice-based cropping system. Besides this, it is an industrial crop and is also used as food in many parts of the world. The present work reports for optimization of various parameters (growth medium, plant growth regulators, pre-conditioning, orientation of explant, and presence of thiol compounds) affecting in vitro regeneration using mature cotyledon explants. The 5-day-old mature cotyledon explants excised from seedlings grown on Murashige and Skoog (MS) salts and Gamborg (B5) vitamins medium containing 15 μM 6-benzylaminopurine were cultured with its adaxial side facing on medium containing 2.5 μM 6-benzylaminopurine and 50 mg/L thiourea and produced multiple shoots (7 ‒ 8) in 100% cultures within 28 days. Healthy shoots were rooted on half-strength Murashige and Skoog (MS) salts and full-strength vitamins medium augmented with 2.5 μM indole-3-butyric acid.

The choices associated with a chief diversity officer (CDO) appointment can significantly impact firm performance. However, research examining this link is scarce. To bridge this gap, we draw upon stakeholder, upper echelons, and institutional theories to examine how choices related to CDO appointments, namely, gender, type of hire, and type of position, impact firm performance. Using data from Fortune 1000 and S&P 500 U.S. firms on 101 CDO appointments, we investigate how CDO appointment choices influence firm performance. Our results indicate that appointment of a female CDO is not associated with a significantly better firm performance than hiring a male CDO. However, consistent with our hypotheses, we found evidence that both - the type of CDO position and the type of hire are important to firm performance. Notably, a firm's performance gains are substantially increased when the firm hires a CDO externally to fill a newly created CDO position.

Phytochemicals are natural active ingredients that are occurring in plants. In the pursuit for novel biomolecules, the recovery of bioactive composites from plants, as well as their quantitative and qualitative evaluation, is critical. In the discovery and characterization of bioactive compounds, plant extraction and separation remain a critical concern. Analysis of bioactive compounds found in plant extracts using various approaches involving the use of chromatographic methods such as HPLC, TLC, OPLC, GC, PC, CC, and detection through FTIR, NMR, and MS is a frequent practice in the isolation of these bioactive compounds. The pure compound's structure and biological activity/bioactivity, such as antioxidant, antibacterial, or cytotoxicity, are then determined, along with their simplicity, specificity, and speed.

Photoreceptors consume glucose supplied by the choriocapillaris to support phototransduction and outer segment (OS) renewal. Reduced glucose supply underlies photoreceptor cell death in inherited retinal degeneration and age-related retinal disease. We have previously shown that restricting glucose transport into the outer retina by conditional deletion of Slc2a1 encoding GLUT1 resulted in photoreceptor loss and impaired OS renewal. However, retinal neurons, glia, and the retinal pigment epithelium play specialized, synergistic roles in metabolite supply and exchange, and the cell-specific map of glucose uptake and utilization in the retina is incomplete. In these studies, we conditionally deleted Slc2a1 in a pan-retinal or rod-specific manner to better understand how glucose is utilized in the retina. Using non-invasive ocular imaging, electroretinography, and histochemical and biochemical analyses we show that genetic deletion of Slc2a1 from retinal neurons and Müller glia results in reduced OS growth and progressive rod but not cone photoreceptor cell death. Rhodopsin levels were severely decreased even at postnatal day 20 when OS length was relatively normal. Arrestin levels were not changed suggesting that glucose uptake is required to synthesize membrane glycoproteins. Rod-specific deletion of Slc2a1 resulted in similar changes in OS length and rod photoreceptor cell death. These studies demonstrate that glucose is an essential carbon source for rod photoreceptor cell OS maintenance and viability.

In the modern era of science, nanotechnology has the ability to circumvent numerous disadvantages of conservative healing preparations. Important progress has been made towards the use of tailored nanomaterials (NMs) to treat the cancer with efficiency, specificity, and high sensitivity. Tailored NMs are operationalized with precise ligands that can predictably target the cancer cells and deliver encapsulated payloads meritoriously. Moreover, NMs can also be deliberated to increase the drug loading, controlled release, improved half-life, and selective distribution by altering their size, surface chemistry, composition, and morphology. The conservative cancer treatments have provoked the event and applications of nanomaterials. The emerging evidence suggests that nanomedicines will provide the next-generation stages for anticancer remedies.

Ethnoveterinary medicine is a branch of ethnobotany concerned with the study of traditional remedies. Ethnoveterinary methods are as old as domestication of numerous livestock species when it comes to animal healthcare. Herbal medicine has experienced a variety of conceptual modifications over time, yet its tone has stayed mostly same from antiquity to the present. Antibacterial, antifungal, insecticidal, and antioxidant action has been demonstrated for plants. Herbal treatment strives to not only cure the underlying cause of the illness, but also to reverse aberrant symptoms and restore the animals' health and vigour.

Cancer is one of the most deadly diseases caused due to abnormal division of the cells. Researchers are facing major challenge for finding the effective treatment of the cancer. Various methods of cancer treatment are chemotherapy, surgery, stem cell/bone marrow transplant, radiotherapy, hormone therapy, and anticancer drugs. The anticancer drugs may be natural, semi-synthetic, or synthetic in nature. The most widely used anticancer drugs are the phytochemicals isolated from the plants of their semi-synthetic analogues. So the research focuses on the isolation and identification of the bioactive compounds from natural sources as a potent anticancer agent. However, now the trend has been moved from the natural plant-based products to the natural products mimics of molecule that is the part of human response system. So, the present chapter briefly highlights the current status of commercialized phytochemicals used as anticancer drugs along with mechanism of action of some important drugs.

A 50-year-old man presented with an episode of chest pain. Cardiac magnetic resonance revealed the presence of a large ventricular septal aneurysm partially closing a perimembranous ventricular septal defect, prolapsing into the right ventricular outflow tract, and mimicking a mass. Several unusual variants of lichen nitidus are described in the literature. Spinous follicular lichen nitidus with perifollicular granulomas is one such variant characterized by generalized follicular as well as nonfollicular keratotic papules, which show perifollicular granulomas on histopathology as well as a lichenoid granulomatous tissue reaction typical of lichen nitidus. Owing to its atypical clinical and histopathologic manifestations, it raises several clinical possibilities and can be a diagnostic challenge. We report this rare variant of lichen nitidus in a 19-year-old female, and discuss its clinical and histopathological differential diagnosis.

We present a probabilistic framework for community discovery and link prediction for graph-structured data, based on a novel, gamma ladder variational autoencoder (VAE) architecture. We model each node in the graph via a deep hierarchy of gamma-distributed embeddings, and define each link probability via a nonlinear function of the bottom-most layer's embeddings of its associated nodes. In addition to leveraging the representational power of multiple layers of stochastic variables via the ladder VAE architecture, our framework offers the following benefits: (1) Unlike existing ladder VAE architectures based on real-valued latent variables, the gamma-distributed latent variables naturally result in non-negativity and sparsity of the learned embeddings, and facilitate their direct interpretation as membership of nodes into (possibly multiple) communities/topics; (2) A novel recognition model for our gamma ladder VAE architecture allows fast inference of node embeddings; and (3) The framework also extends naturally to incorporate node side information (features and/or labels). Our framework is also fairly modular and can leverage a wide variety of graph neural networks as the VAE encoder. We report both quantitative and qualitative results on several benchmark datasets and compare our model with several state-of-the-art methods.

OBJECTIVEEndovascular embolization has been established as an adjuvant treatment strategy for brain arteriovenous malformations (AVMs). A growing body of literature has discussed curative embolization for select lesions. The transition of endovascular embolization from an adjunctive to a definitive treatment modality remains controversial. Here, the authors reviewed the literature to assess the lesional characteristics, technical factors, and angiographic and clinical outcomes of endovascular embolization of AVMs with intent to cure.METHODSElectronic databases—Ovid MEDLINE, Ovid Embase, and PubMed—were searched for studies in which there was evidence of AVMs treated using endovascular embolization with intent to cure. The primary outcomes of interest were angiographic obliteration immediately postembolization and at follow-up. The secondary outcomes of interest were complication rates. Descriptive statistics were used to calculate rates and means.RESULTSFifteen studies with 597 patients and 598 AVMs treated with intent-to-cure embolization were included in this analysis. Thirty-four percent of AVMs were Spetzler-Martin grade III. Complete obliteration immediately postembolization was reported in 58.3% of AVMs that had complete treatment and in 45.8% of AVMs in the entire patient cohort. The overall clinical complication rate was 24.1%. The most common complication was hemorrhage, occurring in 9.7% of patients. Procedure-related mortality was 1.5%.CONCLUSIONSWhile endovascular embolization with intent to cure can be an option for select AVMs, the reported complication rates appear to be increased compared with those in studies in which adjunctive embolization was the goal. Given the high complication rate related to a primary embolization approach, the risks and benefits of such a treatment strategy should be discussed among a multidisciplinary team. Curative embolization of AVMs should be considered an unanticipated benefit of such therapy rather than a goal.

Weight pruning is among the most popular approaches for compressing deep convolutional neural networks. Recent work suggests that in a randomly initialized deep neural network, there exist sparse subnetworks that achieve performance comparable to the original network. Unfortunately, finding these subnetworks involves iterative stages of training and pruning, which can be computationally expensive. We propose Structured Sparse Convolution (SSC), which leverages the inherent structure in images to reduce the parameters in the convolutional filter. This leads to improved efficiency of convolutional architectures compared to existing methods that perform pruning at initialization. We show that SSC is a generalization of commonly used layers (depthwise, groupwise and pointwise convolution) in ``efficient architectures.'' Extensive experiments on well-known CNN models and datasets show the effectiveness of the proposed method. Food access is a major key component in food security, as it is every individual’s right to proper access to a nutritious and affordable food supply. Low access to healthy food sources influences people’s diet and activity habits. Guilford County in North Carolina has a high ranking in low food security and a high rate of health issues such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and obesity. Therefore, the primary objective of this study was to investigate the geospatial correlation between health issues and food access areas. The secondary objective was to quantitatively compare food access areas and heath issues’ descriptive statistics. The tertiary objective was to compare several machine learning techniques and find the best model that fit health issues against various food access variables with the highest performance accuracy. In this study, we adopted a food-access perspective to show that communities that have residents who have equitable access to healthy food options are typically less vulnerable to health-related disasters. We propose a methodology to help policymakers lower the number of health issues in Guilford County by analyzing such issues via correlation with respect to food access. Specifically, we conducted a geographic information system mapping methodology to examine how access to healthy food options influenced health and mortality outcomes in one of the largest counties in the state of North Carolina. We created geospatial maps representing food deserts—areas with scarce access to nutritious food, food swamps—areas with more availability of unhealthy food options compared to healthy food options, and food oases—areas with a relatively higher availability of healthy food options than unhealthy options. Our results presented a positive correlation coefficient of R2 = 0.819 among obesity and the independent variables of transportation access, and population. The correlation coefficient matrix analysis helped to identify a strong negative correlation between obesity and median income. Overall, this study offers valuable insights that can help health authorities develop preemptive preparedness for healthcare disasters.

Background: The discovery of vitamin C (ascorbic acid) is related to the ancient history of persistent research on the origins of the haemorrhagic disease scurvy. Vitamin C is an important nutrient that aids in a variety of biological and physiological processes. Scientists have been researching the function of vitamin C in the prevention and ailment of sepsis and pneumonia for decades. This has created a potential platform for applying these results to individuals suffering from severe coronavirus infection (COVID-19). Vitamin C's ability to activate and enhance the immune system makes it a promising treatment in the present COVID-19 pandemic. Vitamin C also aids in the activation of vitamin B, the production of certain neurotransmitters, and the transformation of cholesterol into bile acids. Hence, vitamin C is used for the treatment of many diseases. Aim: This review highlights the Vitamin C investigations that are performed by various researchers on patients with COVID 19 infection, the clinical studies and their observations. The authors have additionally updated information on the significance of vitamin C insufficiency, as well as its relevance and involvement in diseases such as cancer, wound healing, iron deficiency anaemia, atherosclerosis and neurodegenerative disorders. Here, we discuss them with the references. Methods: The method used in order to perform literature search was done using SciFinder, PubMed and ScienceDirect. Results: There is a potential role of vitamin C in various diseases including neurodegenerative disorders, COVID-19 and other diseases and the results are highlighted in the review with the help of clinical and preclinical data. Conclusion: More research on vitamin C and the undergoing clinical trials might prove a potential role of vitamin C in protecting the population from current COVID-19 pandemic.
