Omnidirectional camera is a cost-effective and information-rich sensor highly suitable for many marine applications and the ocean scientific community, encompassing several domains such as augmented reality, mapping, motion estimation, visual surveillance, and simultaneous localization and mapping. However, designing and constructing such a high-quality 360$^{\circ}$ real-time streaming camera system for underwater applications is a challenging problem due to the technical complexity in several aspects including sensor resolution, wide field of view, power supply, optical design, system calibration, and overheating management. This paper presents a novel and comprehensive system that addresses the complexities associated with the design, construction, and implementation of a fully functional 360$^{\circ}$ real-time streaming camera system specifically tailored for underwater environments. Our proposed system, UWA360CAM, can stream video in real time, operate in 24/7, and capture 360$^{\circ}$ underwater panorama images. Notably, our work is the pioneering effort in providing a detailed and replicable account of this system. The experiments provide a comprehensive analysis of our proposed system.

Operating since 2004, the Pierre Auger Observatory has led to major advances in our understanding of the ultra-high-energy cosmic rays. The latest findings have revealed new insights that led to the upgrade of the Observatory, with the primary goal of obtaining information on the primary mass of the most energetic cosmic rays on a shower-by-shower basis. In the framework of the upgrade, called AugerPrime, the 1660 water-Cherenkov detectors of the surface array are equipped with plastic scintillators and radio antennas, allowing us to enhance the composition sensitivity. To accommodate new detectors and to increase experimental capabilities, the electronics is also upgraded. This includes better timing with up-to-date GPS receivers, higher sampling frequency, increased dynamic range, and more powerful local processing of the data. In this paper, the design characteristics of the new electronics and the enhanced dynamic range will be described. The manufacturing and test processes will be outlined and the test results will be discussed. The calibration of the SD detector and various performance parameters obtained from the analysis of the first commissioning data will also be presented.

A central endeavour in bioelectronics is the development of logic elements to transduce and process ionic to electronic signals. Motivated by this challenge, we report fully monolithic, nanoscale logic elements featuring n- and p-type nanowires as electronic channels that are proton-gated by electron-beam patterned Nafion. We demonstrate inverter circuits with state-of-the-art ion-to-electron transduction performance giving DC gain exceeding 5 and frequency response up to 2 kHz. A key innovation facilitating the logic integration is a new electron-beam process for patterning Nafion with linewidths down to 125 nm. This process delivers feature sizes compatible with low voltage, fast switching elements. This expands the scope for Nafion as a versatile patternable high-proton-conductivity element for bioelectronics and other applications requiring nanoengineered protonic membranes and electrodes.

In cross-beam energy transfer (CBET), the interference of two laser beams ponderomotively drives an ion-acoustic wave that coherently scatters light from one beam into the other. This redirection of laser beam energy can severely inhibit the performance of direct-drive inertial confinement fusion (ICF) implosions. To assess the role of nonlinear and kinetic processes in direct-drive-relevant CBET, the energy transfer between two laser beams in the plasma conditions of an ICF implosion at the OMEGA laser facility was modeled using particle-in-cell simulations. For typical laser beam intensities, the simulations are in excellent agreement with linear kinetic theory, indicating that nonlinear processes do not play a role in direct-drive implosions. At higher intensities, CBET can be modified by pump depletion, backward stimulated Raman scattering, or ion trapping, depending on the plasma density.

We review comprehensive observations of electromagnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC) wave-driven energetic electron precipitation using data from the energetic electron detector on the Electron Losses and Fields InvestigatioN (ELFIN) mission, two polar-orbiting low-altitude spinning CubeSats, measuring 50-5000 keV electrons with good pitch-angle and energy resolution. EMIC wave-driven precipitation exhibits a distinct signature in energy-spectrograms of the precipitating-to-trapped flux ratio: peaks at 0.5 MeV which are abrupt (bursty) with significant substructure (occasionally down to sub-second timescale). Multiple ELFIN passes over the same MLT sector allow us to study the spatial and temporal evolution of the EMIC wave - electron interaction region. Using two years of ELFIN data, we assemble a statistical database of 50 events of strong EMIC wave-driven precipitation. Most reside at L=5-7 at dusk, while a smaller subset exists at L=8-12 at post-midnight. The energies of the peak-precipitation ratio and of the half-peak precipitation ratio (our proxy for the minimum resonance energy) exhibit an L-shell dependence in good agreement with theoretical estimates based on prior statistical observations of EMIC wave power spectra. The precipitation ratio's spectral shape for the most intense events has an exponential falloff away from the peak (i.e., on either side of 1.45 MeV). It too agrees well with quasi-linear diffusion theory based on prior statistics of wave spectra. Sub-MeV electron precipitation observed concurrently with strong EMIC wave-driven 1MeV precipitation has a spectral shape that is consistent with efficient pitch-angle scattering down to 200-300 keV by much less intense higher frequency EMIC waves. These results confirm the critical role of EMIC waves in driving relativistic electron losses. Nonlinear effects may abound and require further investigation.

We propose a theoretical approach to quantitatively determine the photothermally driven enhancement of molecular mobility of graphene-indomethacin mixtures under infrared laser irradiation. Graphene plasmons absorb incident electromagnetic energy and dissipate them into heat. The absorbed energy depends on optical properties of graphene plasmons, which are sensitive to structural parameters, and concentration of plasmonic nanostructures. By using theoretical model, we calculate temperature gradients of the bulk drug with different concentrations of graphene plasmons. From these, we determine the temperature dependence of structural molecular relaxation and diffusion of indomethacin and find how the heating process significantly enhances the drug mobility., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in Rapid Research Letters

We theoretically investigate physical properties of the pressure-induced activation volume and dynamic decoupling of ternidazole, glycerol, and probucol by the Elastically Collective Nonlinear Langevin Equation theory. Based on the predicted temperature dependence of activated relaxation under various compression, the activation volume is determined to characterize effects of pressure on molecular dynamics of materials. We find that the decoupling of the structural relaxation time of compressed systems from their bulk uncompressed value is governed by the power-law rule. The decoupling exponent exponentially grows with pressure below 2 GPa. The decoupling exponent and activation volume are intercorrelated and have a connection with the differential activation free energy. We numerically and mathematically analyze relationships among these quantities to explain many results in previous experiments and simulations., Comment: accepted for publication in Macromolecular Theory and Simulations

We theoretically investigate the temperature dependence of the reversible structural relaxation time and diffusion constant of metallic glasses under pressure. The compression not only changes the glassy dynamics, but also generates a metastable state along with a higher-energy state where the system can rejuvenate. The relaxation times for forward and backward transitions in this two-state system are nearly identical and much faster than the relaxation time without accounting for barrier-recrossing. At ambient pressure, the expected irreversible relaxation process is recovered, and our numerical results agree well with prior experimental results. An increase of pressure has a minor effect on the relaxation time and diffusion constant that one computes without considering the influence of the metastable state, but it leads to a large reduction of the reversible relaxation time computed upon taking the metastable state into account. The performance of direct-drive inertial confinement fusion implosions relies critically on the coupling of laser energy to the target plasma. Cross-beam energy transfer (CBET), the resonant exchange of energy between intersecting laser beams mediated by ponderomotively driven ion-acoustic waves (IAW), inhibits this coupling by scattering light into unwanted directions. The variety of beam intersection angles and varying plasma conditions in an implosion results in IAWs with a range of phase velocities. Here we show that CBET saturates through a resonance detuning that depends on the IAW phase velocity and that results from trapping-induced modifications to the ion distribution functions. For smaller phase velocities, the modifications to the distribution functions can rapidly thermalize in the presence of mid-Z ions, leading to a blueshift in the resonant frequency. For larger phase velocities, the modifications can persist, leading to a redshift in the resonant frequency. Ultimately, these results may reveal pathways towards CBET mitigation and inform reduced models for radiation hydrodynamics codes to improve their predictive capability.

The purpose of continuum plasticity models is to efficiently predict the behavior of structures beyond their elastic limits. The purpose of multiscale materials science models, among them crystal plasticity models, is to understand the material behavior and design the material for a given target. The current successful continuum hyperelastoplastic models are based in the multiplicative decomposition from crystal plasticity, but significant differences in the computational frameworks of both approaches remain, making comparisons not straightforward. In previous works we have presented a theory for multiplicative continuum elastoplasticity which solved many long-standing issues, preserving the appealing structure of additive infinitesimal Wilkins algorithms. In this work we extend the theory to crystal plasticity. We show that the new formulation for crystal plasticity is parallel and comparable to continuum plasticity, preserving the attractive aspects of the framework: (1) simplicity of the kinematics reaching a parallelism with the infinitesimal framework; (2) possibility of very large elastic strains and unrestricted type of hyperelastic behavior; (3) immediate plain backward-Euler algorithmic implementation of the continuum theory avoiding algorithmically motivated exponential mappings, yet preserving isochoric flow; (4) absence of Mandel-type stresses in the formulation; (5) objectiveness and weak-invariance by construction due to the use of flow rules in terms of elastic corrector rates. The ArDM experiment completed a single-phase commissioning run in 2015 with an active liquid argon target of nearly one tonne in mass. The analysis of the data and comparison to simulations allowed for a test of the crucial detector properties and confirmed the low background performance of the setup. The statistical rejection power for electron recoil events using the pulse shape discrimination method was estimated using data from a Cf-252 neutron calibration source. Electron and nuclear recoil band profiles were found to be well described by Gaussian distributions. Employing such a model we derive values for the electron recoil statistical rejection power of more than 10$^8$ in the tonne-scale liquid argon target for events with more than 50 detected photons at a 50% acceptance for nuclear recoils. The Rn-222 emanation rate of the ArDM cryostat at room temperature was found to be 65.6$\pm$0.4 $\mu$Hz/l, and the Ar-39 specific activity from the employed atmospheric argon to be 0.95$\pm$0.05 Bq/kg. The cosmic muon flux at the Canfranc underground site was determined to be between 2 and 3.5$\times 10^{-3}m^{2}s^{-1}$ .
