Abstract

This article brings together critical perspectives on a broad range of issues that emerge from a reading of the National Policy on Education 2016. The issues vary from accountability to transdisciplinarity and from the marginalization of transgender people to value education. Such a complex task of critiquing this policy document cannot be accomplished by an individual alone. This task must be borne by a team of scholars with training in diverse fields. Working in a team however generates divergences as well as convergences. Yet no attempt has been made to iron out the creases emanating from differences in opinions, nor persist with the search for an underlying singularity, nor enforce a consensus. Such is the uncertain nature of the task of reforming higher education.

Abstract

Low resistance non-alloyed ohmic contacts are realized by a metal-first process on homoepitaxial, heavily n+ doped (010) β-Ga2O3. The resulting contacts have a contact resistance (Rc) as low as 0.23 Ω-mm on an as-grown sample and exhibit nearly linear ohmic behavior even without a post-metallization anneal. The metal-first process was applied to form non-alloyed contacts on n+ (010) β-Ga2O3 grown by metal-organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) as well as suboxide molecular beam epitaxy. Identical contacts fabricated on similar MOCVD samples by conventional liftoff processing exhibit highly rectifying Schottky behavior. Re-processing using the metal-first process after removal of the poor contacts by conventional methods does not improve the contacts; however, addition of a Ga-flux polishing step followed by re-processing using a metal-first process again results in low resistance, nearly linear ohmic contacts. The liftoff process, therefore, does not reliably render nearly linear ohmic behavior in non-alloyed contacts. Furthermore, no interface contamination was detected by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. This suggests that during the initial liftoff processing, a detrimental layer may form at the interface, likely modification of the Ga2O3 surface, that is not removable during the contact removal process but that can be removed by Ga-flux polishing. 63. Aerosol demasking enhances climate warming over South Asia

Abstract

Anthropogenic aerosols mask the climate warming caused by greenhouse gases (GHGs). In the absence of observational constraints, large uncertainties plague the estimates of this masking effect. Here we used the abrupt reduction in anthropogenic emissions observed during the COVID-19 societal slow-down to characterize the aerosol masking effect over South Asia. During this period, the aerosol loading decreased substantially and our observations reveal that the magnitude of this aerosol demasking corresponds to nearly three-fourths of the CO2-induced radiative forcing over South Asia. Concurrent measurements over the northern Indian Ocean unveiled a ~7% increase in the earth’s surface-reaching solar radiation (surface brightening). Aerosol-induced atmospheric solar heating decreased by ~0.4 K d−1. Our results reveal that under clear sky conditions, anthropogenic emissions over South Asia lead to nearly 1.4 W m−2 heating at the top of the atmosphere during the period March–May. A complete phase-out of today’s fossil fuel combustion to zero-emission renewables would result in rapid aerosol demasking, while the GHGs linger on.

Abstract

Epitaxial untwinned SrRuO3 thin films were grown on (110)-oriented DyScO3 substrates by molecular-beam epitaxy. We report an exceptional sample with a residual resistivity ratio (RRR), ρ [300 K]/ρ [4 K] of 205 and a ferromagnetic Curie temperature, TC, of 168.3 K. We compare the properties of this sample to other SrRuO3 films grown on DyScO3(110) with RRRs ranging from 8.8 to 205, and also compare it to the best reported bulk single crystal of SrRuO3. We determine that SrRuO3 thin films grown on DyScO3(110) have an enhanced TC as long as the RRR of the thin film is above a minimum electrical quality threshold. This RRR threshold is about 20 for SrRuO3. Films with lower RRR exhibit TCs that are significantly depressed from the intrinsic strain-enhanced value. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

New properties and exotic quantum phenomena can form due to periodic nanotextures, including Moire patterns, ferroic domains, and topologically protected magnetization and polarization textures. Despite the availability of powerful tools to characterize the atomic crystal structure, the visualization of nanoscale strain-modulated structural motifs remains challenging. Here, we develop nondestructive real-space imaging of periodic lattice distortions in thin epitaxial films and report an emergent periodic nanotexture in a Mott insulator. Specifically, we combine iterative phase retrieval with unsupervised machine learning to invert the diffuse scattering pattern from conventional X-ray reciprocal-space maps into real-space images of crystalline displacements. Our imaging in PbTiO3/SrTiO3 superlattices exhibiting checkerboard strain modulation substantiates published phase-field model calculations. Furthermore, the imaging of biaxially strained Mott insulator Ca2RuO4 reveals a strain-induced nanotexture comprised of nanometer-thin metallic-structure wires separated by nanometer-thin Mott-insulating-structure walls, as confirmed by cryogenic scanning transmission electron microscopy (cryo-STEM). The nanotexture in Ca2RuO4 film is induced by the metal-to-insulator transition and has not been reported in bulk crystals. We expect the phasing of diffuse X-ray scattering from thin crystalline films in combination with cryo-STEM to open a powerful avenue for discovering, visualizing, and quantifying the periodic strain-modulated structures in quantum materials. Abstract

Tissue engineering aims to exploit the regenerative capacity of cells and connect the inherent ability of the body to repair and regenerate. Cells are seeded onto a porous three-dimensional scaffold in tissue engineering, which will provide protection and direct cells to the development of new tissue-like structures. These scaffolds can provide a medium for the delivery, under controlled conditions of growth factors release and drug delivery. Herein, nanocellulose was extracted from Ixora coccinea L. plant root, plasticized scaffold of nanocellulose were prepared by using glycerol, gelatin, and PEG 600 followed by morphological characterized by FTIR, XRD, SEM, and tensile modulus analysis. FTIR indicated extracted nanocellulose is without any hemicelluloses, lignin, and non-cellulosic materials. XRD data displayed the extracted nanocellulose has a crystal size of around 3.6 nm while SEM data revealed the fiber diameter was around 20 µm. In the tensile modulus analysis, 1% PEG 600 exhibited the highest (tensile strength 69 MPa with young’s modulus 67.326 MPa) as compared to glycerol and gelatin and hence selected for further studies. The In vitro cytocompatibility studies revealed that nanocellulose and 1% PEG 600 incorporated nanocellulose scaffolds were cell-friendly, promote cell proliferation, and do not show RBC aggregation as well as haemolysis suggesting its potential in various tissue engineering applications. The novelty of this work is that the nanocellulose extracted from the root of I. coccineahas traditional medicinal values in Ayurveda.

Abstract

The Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) is the first planetary defense test mission. It will demonstrate the kinetic impactor technique by intentionally colliding the DART spacecraft with the near-Earth asteroid Dimorphos. The main DART spacecraft is accompanied by the Italian Space Agency Light Italian CubeSat for Imaging of Asteroids (LICIACube). Shape modeling efforts will estimate the volume of Dimorphos and constrain the nature of the impact site. The DART mission uses stereophotoclinometry (SPC) as its primary shape modeling technique. DART is essentially a worst-case scenario for any image-based shape modeling approach because images taken by the camera on board the DART spacecraft, called the Didymos Reconnaissance and Asteroid Camera for Optical navigation (DRACO), possess little stereo and no lighting variation; they simply zoom in on the asteroid. LICIACube images add some stereo, but the images are substantially lower in resolution than the DRACO images. Despite the far-from-optimal imaging conditions, our tests indicate that we can identify the impact site to an accuracy and precision better than 10% the size of the spacecraft core, estimate the volume of Dimorphos to better than 25%, and measure tilts at the impact site over the scale of the spacecraft with an accuracy better than 7°. In short, we will know with excellent accuracy where the DART spacecraft hit, with reasonable knowledge of local tilt, and determine the volume well enough that uncertainties in the density of Dimorphos will be comparable to or dominate the uncertainty in the estimated mass. The tests reported here demonstrate that SPC is a robust technique for shape modeling, even with suboptimal images.

Abstract

Since July of 2009, The Compact Reconnaissance Imaging Spectral Mapper (CRISM) onboard the Mars Re- connaissance Orbiter (MRO) has periodically obtained pole-to-pole observations (i.e., full MRO orbits) of limb scanned visible/near IR spectra (lambda= 0.4 - 4.0 micrometers, delta lambda approx. 10 nm- Murchie et al., 2007). These CRISM limb observations support the first seasonally and spatially extensive set of Mars 1.27 micometers O2 (1 delta(sub g)) day-glow profile retrievals (approx. 1100) over greater than or equal to 8-80 km altitudes. Their comparison to Laboratoire de Meteorologie Dynamique (LMD) global climate model (GCM) simulated O2 (1 delta(sub g)) volume emission rate (VER) profiles, as a function of altitude, latitude, and season (solar longitude, L(sub s), supports several key conclusions regarding Mars atmospheric water vapor (which is derived from O2 (1 delta(sub g)) emission rates), Mars O3, and the collisional de-excitation of O2 (1 delta(sub g)) in the Mars CO2 atmosphere. Current (Navarro et al., 2014) LMDGCM simulations of Mars atmospheric water vapor fall 2-3 times below CRISM derived water vapor abundances at 20-40 km altitudes over low-to-mid latitudes in northern spring (L(sub s) = 30-60 deg), and northern mid-to-high latitudes over northern summer (L(sub s) = 60-140 deg). In contrast, LMDGCM simulated water vapor is 2-5 times greater than CRISM derived values at all latitudes and seasons above 40 km, within the aphelion cloud belt (ACB), and over high-southern to mid-southern latitudes in southern summer (L(sub s) = 190-340 deg) at 15-35 km altitudes. Overall, the solstitial summer-to-winter hemisphere gradients in water vapor are reversed between the LMDGCM modeled versus the CRISM derived water vapor abundances above 10-30 km altitudes. LMDGCM-CRISM differences in water vapor profiles correlate with LMDGCM-CRISM differences in cloud mixing profiles; and likely reflect limitations in simulating cloud microphysics and radiative forcing, both of which restrict meridional transport of water from summer- to-winter hemispheres on Mars (Clancy et al., 1996; Montmessin et al., 2004; Steele et al., 2014; Navarro et al., 2014) and depend on uncertain cloud microphysical properties (Navarro et al., 2014). The derived low-to-mid latitude changes in Mars water vapor vertical distributions should reduce current model- data disagreements in column O3 and H2O2 abundances over low-to-mid latitudes (e.g., within the ACB; Lefevre et al., 2008; Encrenaz et al., 2015; Clancy et al., 2016). Lastly, the global/seasonal average com- parison of CRISM and LMDGCM O2 (1 delta(sub g)) VER below 20 km altitudes indicates a factor of approx. 3 times lower value (0.25 x 10(exp -20) cu cm sec(exp -1)) for the CO2 collisional de-excitation rate coefficient of O2 (1 delta(sub g)) than derived recently by Guslyakova et al. (2016).

Abstract

Titania (TiO2) is considered to have immense potential as a photocatalyst, the anatase phase in particular. There have been numerous attempts to push the limits of its catalytic activity to higher wavelengths to harness the visible electromagnetic radiation. Most of the investigations till date have been restricted to fine-tuning the bandgap by doping, control of defect chemistry at the surface and several to first principle simulations either with limited success or success at the cost of complexities in processing. Here, we report a simple and elegant way of preparing ceramics through precursor chemistry which involves synthesis of macroporous and mesoporous nanocomposites with in situ formation of TiO2 nanocrystals into a robust and protecting SiOC matrix. The in situ nanoscaled TiO2 is anatase of size 9–10 nm, which is uniformly distributed in an amorphous SiOC matrix forming a new generation of nanocomposites that combine the robustness, structural stability and durability of the SiOC matrix while achieving nanoscaled TiO2 functionalities. The stabilization of the anatase phase even at temperature as high as 1200 °C was evident. With an average pore size of 6.8 nm, surface area of 129 m2/g (BET) and pore volume of 0.22 cm3/g (BET), mesoporosity was achieved in the nanocomposites. The composites exhibited visible light photocatalytic activity, which is attributed to the Ti–O–C/TiC bonds resulting in the reduction of band gap by 0.2 to 0.9 eV. Furthermore, the heterojunction formed between the amorphous SiOC and crystalline TiO2 is also expected to minimize the recombination rate of electron-hole pair, making these novel nanocomposites based on TiO2 extremely active in visible wavelength regime.
