72. Colloidal Hydrogel with Staged Sequestration and Release of Molecules Undergoing Competitive Binding

Abstract

Competitive binding of distinct molecules in the hydrogel interior can facilitate dynamic exchange between the hydrogel and the surrounding environment. The ability to control the rates of sequestration and release of these molecules would enhance the hydrogel’s functionality and enable targeting of a specific task. Here, we report the design of a colloidal hydrogel with two distinct pore dimensions to achieve staged, diffusion-controlled scavenging and release dynamics of molecules undergoing competitive binding. The staged scavenging and release strategy was shown for CpG oligodeoxynucleotide (ODN) and human epidermal growth factor (hEGF), two molecules exhibiting different affinities to the quaternary ammonium groups of the hydrogel. Fast ODN scavenging from the ambient environment occurred via diffusion through submicrometer-size hydrogel pores, while delayed hEGF release from the hydrogel was governed by its diffusion through nanometer-size pores. The results of the experiments were in agreement with simulation results. The significance of staged ODN–hEGF exchange was highlighted by the dual anti-inflammation and tissue proliferation hydrogel performance.

73. Enzymatically Oxidized Carbohydrates As Dicarbonyl Biobased Cross-Linkers for Polyamines

Abstract

Carbonyl cross-linkers are used to modify textiles and form resins, and are produced annually in megatonne volumes. Due to their toxicity toward the environment and human health, however, less harmful biobased alternatives are needed. This study introduces carbonyl groups to lactose and galactose using galactose oxidase from Fusarium graminearum(FgrGalOx) and pyranose dehydrogenase from Agaricus bisporus(AbPDH1) to produce four cross-linkers. Differential scanning calorimetry was used to compare cross-linker reactivity, most notably resulting in a 34 °C decrease in reaction peak temperature (72 °C) for FgrGalOx-oxidized galactose compared to unmodified galactose. Attenuated total reflectance Fourier-transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR) spectroscopy were used to verify imine formation and amine and aldehyde depletion. Cross-linkers were shown to form gels when mixed with polyallylamine, with FgrGalOx-oxidized lactose forming gels more effectively than all other cross-linkers, including glutaraldehyde. Further development of carbohydrate cross-linker technologies could lead to their adoption in various applications, including in adhesives, resins, and textiles.

Abstract

By leveraging the principles of electromagnetic theory and materials science, the characteristics of dielectric polymer composites can be optimized, eliminating repetitive trial‐and‐error in their application as electromagnetic absorbers (EMAs). Herein, a systematic framework for optimizing the thickness and composition of double‐layer EMAs is proposed, using a combination of transmission line, Debye relaxation, and Maxwell–Garnett theories. Following theoretical optimization, a double‐layered electrospun EMA is fabricated, which comprises a ≈1.17 mm thick matrix of styrene–butadiene–styrene (SBS) decorated with MXene on its fibrous structure. The second SBS layer, with a thickness of ≈0.52 mm, incorporates a hybrid of MXene and graphene nanoribbons (GNR) as conductive additives. The EMA exhibits durable electrical performance after 2000 tensile cycles, owing to the surface chemistry engineering and the novel in situ assembly technique. It is capable of shielding 99.9% of the incident wave and >80% absorptivity (A) over almost the entire Ku‐band. The EMA also exhibits desirable mechanical characteristics, such as >300% stretchability and full twist and wrinkle recoveries, making it an excellent choice for protective attire applications. Additionally, the introduced approach provides solutions for the advancement of tailorable polymer composite EMAs, with respect to specific criteria of the target wave frequency, effective absorption bandwidth, and absorption levels. Abstract

Co-extruded multilayer films have been extensively investigated due to their broad range of applications in various industries, such as pipe and packaging. Ethylene vinyl alcohol (EVOH) is considered barrier polymer that is frequently co-extruded with polyethylene (PE) or polypropylene (PP) grafted with maleic anhydride (MA) to create films with multiple properties.
