66. Correlation between X-ray flux and rotational acceleration in Vela X-1

Abstract

The results of a search for correlations between X-ray flux and angular acceleration for the accreting binary pulsar Vela X-1 are presented. Results are based on data obtained with the Hakucho satellite during the interval 1982 to 1984. In undertaking this correlation analysis, it was necessary to modify the usual statistical method to deal with conditions imposed by generally unavoidable satellite observing constraints, most notably a mismatch in sampling between the two variables. The results are suggestive of a correlation between flux and the absolute value of the angular acceleration, at a significance level of 96 percent. The implications of the methods and results for future observations and analysis are discussed.

Abstract

The extensive observations of Vela X-1 acquired from 1980 to 1984 with the Hakucho and Tenma satellites, using a pulse-filtering technique that provides a significant improvement in pulse-timing precision, are reexamined. The details of the preparation of this data base, including the determination of updated orbital parameters based on these and previously published observations covering a 10-yr interval, are reported. Preparatory to estimation of angular-acceleration flux-correlation pairs, substantially improved estimates of the power density of fluctuations in the derivative of the pulse frequency on analysis periods between 0.5 and 80 days are presented. These results support the phenomenological hypothesis that unresolved fluctuations in the angular acceleration of the neutron star, describable as random noise, are responsible for the entire history of the observed variation in pulse frequency of Vela X-1 on all time scales longer than a few days.

68. Orbital elements of the binary X-ray pulsar GX 301-2

Abstract

X-ray outbursts from GX 301-2 were observed with Hakucho on two occasions during April and May 1982 and with Tenma in April 1984. Pulse arrival times measured with Hakucho were combined with those previously measured with Ariel 5 and SAS 3. The joint timing analysis of these data sets yields an orbital period of 41.5 days as the only acceptable solution; this is consistent with the period derived from the X-ray flaring events of the source. The orbital elements of the binary system, established from the joint timing analysis, are presented. The orbital solution suggests that all the peaks of X-ray flares observed during the past 10 yr occur at the orbital period, but consistently appear about 1.4 days before the time of periastron passage of the X-ray star.

Abstract

The X-ray pulsar Her X-1 was observed in an on-state during its 35th cycle of activity in May, 1983 using the gas scintillation proportional counter (GSPC) array of the Tenma X-ray astronomy satellite. The outstanding features observed during the declining phase of the on-state included: a sharp decrease in the main X-ray pulse amplitude; and a steady increase in the column density of cool matter. On the basis of the spectral shape of the pulses, it is suggested that the main phase was attenuated due to electron scattering of the X-ray beam in a highly ionized medium located 3 x 10 to the 8th cm from the neutron star. Near the end of the on-state, the main pulse totally disappeared and a plain sinusoidal profile was observed. The observed pulse profiles are reproduced in graphic form.

Abstract

Suprathermal electrons in the energy range 5 - 100 keV were measured with thin-window proportional counters on board a sounding rocket. The flux of the electrons was found to increase with altitude in the range .100 - 550 km, corresponding to L = 1.15 - 1.22, the angular distribution to be peaked in the direction perpendicular to the geomagnetic line of force, and the energy to be represented by a power law.

Abstract

The eclipsing X-ray binary pulsar 4U 1538-522 was observed with ASCA in March 1994 throughout the eclipse transition. Evidence of extended X-ray halo due to scattering by interstellar dust grains was seen in both the X-ray image and spectrum obtained during the eclipse phase. The radial profiles obtained in 1-2 keV and 2-5 keV bands from 4U1538-52 are consistent with the previous results obtained with ROSAT and ASCA from other Galactic sources. The 1-10 keV spectrum during out-of-eclipse phase can be fitted by a simple power law model of photon index γ = 1.2 with relatively large interstellar absorption column density. On the contrary, a steep continuum spectrum with a photon index of γ = 2.6 was observed during the eclipse. Comparing the two spectra, we can estimate the column density of the dust grains toward the source, which is substantially less than the density of the astronomical interstellar grains. This support the idea that interstellar grains are "fluffy" aggregates of smaller solid particles. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

XTE J1748-288 is the newly discovered transient with a one-sided radio jet. It was observed with ASCA on 1998/09/06 and 1998/09/26, 100 days after the onset of the radio-X-ray outburst. The spectra were expressed with an attenuated power-law model, and the 2-6-keV flux was 4.6[sup +1.0, -0.8] x 10[sup -11] erg s[sup -1] cm[sup -2] and 2.2[sup +0.8, sub -0.6] x 10[sup -12] for 09/06 and 09/26, respectively. The light curve shows that the steady exponential decay with an e-folding time of 14 days lasted over 100 days and 4 orders of magnitude from the peak of the outburst. Abstract

The newly discovered transient X-ray pulsar XTE J0111.2-7317 was observed with ASCA in its bright phase. The pulsation was found to be nearly sinusoidal with some energy dependence (17%, 21% and 30% pulse fractions in 0.5-1.0, 1.0-2.0 and 2.0-10.0 keV bands respectively). In addition to a hard power-law component in the 2-10 keV band, the energy spectrum has a soft excess in the 0.5-2 keV band. Thermal models for the soft excess require very large emission zone for the soft component and can be ruled out based on the pulsations observed at low energies. The low energy excess can however be accommodated if the incident spectrum is modeled as an inversely broken power-law with line of sight absorption. We have also detected an iron Kα emission line with equivalent width of 504±14 eV. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

We report on the results of ASCA observation of the Galactic jet source GRO J1655-40 performed in 1997 Feb. Previous ASCA observations of GRO J1655-40 in 1994 and 1995 revealed the presence of K[sub α] resonance absorption lines from highly ionized iron ions in the X-ray spectra [1]. The center energy of the absorption line varied in association with the change of X-ray intensity: it was that of K[sub α] line of H-like irons and of He-like irons when the X-ray intensity was high (2.2 Crab) and low (0.27–0.57 Crab), respectively. These results suggest that the high temperature plasma producing the absorption lines is located in a non-spherical configuration and is photo-ionized by X-ray radiations. In order to investigate the geometry of the plasma in detail, we performed a long observation of this source from 1997 Feb. 26 to Feb. 28 to cover its full orbital period (2.6 days). The average X-ray intensity was 0.9 Crab and a blend of two absorption lines from H-like and He-like irons was detected. This is consistent with the photo-ionization scenario in relation to the previous observations. We found that the absorption line features exist over the full orbital phase. This fact indicates that the plasma responsible for line absorptions distributes symmetrically around the rotation axis of the accretion disk. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.
