The tested hypotheses of this study were that dentin enamel bonding agents (DBAs) proposed for compomers create a hybrid layer (HL) that seals the margins of Class V restorations and HL is free from voids or gaps on both enamel and dentin margins. For purposes of this study, Class V restorations (n=70) were made in vitro at the CEJ in extracted third molars. Different systems (bonding agent + compomer) were selected. After finishing with discs, each margin was polished with diamond polishing paste for one minute, treated with a 2.5% NaOCl gel for 10 seconds and washed with deionized water to remove polishing debris and non-infiltrated collagen. All restorations were immersed in dye solution for 24 hours, then inspected along the margins. SEM analysis was used to evaluate the morphology of the marginal HL and microleakage tests to evaluate their ability to seal the margins of restorations. Marginal leakage was observed along the dentin and enamel margin. A thin marginal HL (0.5-1.2 mum) was detected only along the dentin margin of several bonding systems but not along the enamel margin. Porosities and gaps were detected along margins when no HL was observed. The results demonstrated that the tested bonding agents for compomers produced a thin marginal hybrid layer, especially along the dentin margin. Microleakage had a relationship with the morphology (gap, porosities and thickness) of this hybrid smear layer. In conclusion, the DBAs tested specifically developed for compomers did not ensure an intimate interfacial adaptation, because microleakage was detected along the enamel and dentin interfaces and the marginal hybrid layer was only partially homogeneous.

Heritage and culture are considered as fundamental lever for local and regional development in the Rome’s metropolitan plan. The Plan interprets nature, heritage and culture as key value that characterize the metropolitan identities. Settlement’s transformations in the plan arise from the settlement’s morphology and historical territory’s form and encourage a double polycentrism (Rome and 120 small municipalities). One of the general aim of the plan is to reorganize present settlement emphasizing existing morphological pattern by using principles of the compact city. The paper would like to point out the importance of some compact city’s arguments for the project of the dispersal contemporary city.

The switching of medium voltage electrical motors is typically realized by means of vacuum circuit breakers (VCBs) essentially in view of their elevated number of switching cycles. As known, switching of VCBs generates important transient recovery voltages (TRVs) that need to be properly evaluated in both VCB sizing and in the power system insulation coordination. As large medium voltage electrical motors are installed into plants typically controlled by means of Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems, maneuvers that involve the motor inrush followed by its sudden de-energization (due, in general, to the intervention of an automatic diagnostic function), resulting into important TRVs, are not unusual. The paper aims at investigating the TRVs due to this specific type of VCB switching by means of a model implemented in the EMTP-RV simulation environment. By making reference to a real plant, the validation of the implemented models is obtained by comparing the simulation results with some experimental transients provided by the plant data fault recorder. The paper finally discusses the adequacy of different countermeasures by analyzing their effectiveness for the TRVs limitation.

–The paper presents a PMU prototype specifically developed for active distribution network applications. The paper describes the method developed to accurately measure the synchrophasors, its implementation into a real-time microcontroller and the relevant characterization in both steady state and transient conditions. Concerning these last points, the paper presents a test procedure suitably conceived to characterize the PMU with both steady state – single tone and distorted – and frequency-varying signals simulating power systems electromechanical transients. The results show that the developed PMU exhibits high accuracy levels that are not modified by the harmonic distortion of the reference signal and by its frequency-varying transient behavior and compatible with their use into power distribution networks.

Giant frontal mucocele (GFM) is an extremely rare cause of frontal lobe syndrome. Subdural empyema (SDE) is an uncommon complication of paranasal sinisutis, for which craniotomy and decompressive craniotomy are the most effective surgical procedures.A 54-year-old man was brought unconscious to the Emergency Room where recurrent generalized seizures occurred. Heroine abuse, HCV related hepatitis, prolonged antibiotic therapy for treatment of purulent rhinorrhea, along with recent personality changes, was reported. High white blood cell count, pansinusitis, GFM, SDE and cerebritis were documented. The patient underwent bifrontal craniotomy in emergency, extensive drilling of the inner aspect of the frontal bone, surgical toilette of the enlarged frontal sinus and its "cranialization". Prevotella intermedia and Fusobacterium nucleatum were isolated and antibiotic therapy was started intravenously and then continued orally for three months. Two years later the patient has recovered, though minor signs of frontal lobe syndrome persist.To the Authors knowledge this is the first case of GFM with SDE reported in the literature. Although decompressive craniectomy is advocated in extreme conditions, as in this case, "internal decompressive craniectomy", obtained with craniotomy and cranialization of the frontal sinuses, is strongly advocated in cases of SDE associated with megasinuses.

PurposeTo evaluate levels of malondialdehyde and the total antioxidant capacity (TAC) in the blood, aqueous humor, and vitreous bodies of diabetic and nondiabetic patients. We also measured the blood energy charge potential (ECP).MethodsWe examined 19 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and diabetic retinopathy. Ten were scheduled for cataract surgery and pars plana vitrectomy because of proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR). The other nine, with mild nonproliferative PDR (NPDR), and fourteen nondiabetic, age-matched subjects enrolled as a control group were scheduled for cataract surgery and vitrectomy because of epiretinal membranes. Blood, aqueous humor and vitreous body samples were collected at the time of surgery. Malondialdehyde concentrations and blood ECP were measured with high-performance liquid chromatography. The TAC of the samples was estimated with the oxygen radical absorbance capacity method.ResultsThe level of blood and vitreous malondialdehyde in the PDR group was significantly higher compared to controls and to NPDR patients. PDR patients also had lower levels of TAC at the vitreous body and aqueous humor level, but not at the blood level, compared to controls and with NPDR patients. In all diabetic patients, the blood ECP values were significantly lower, compared to control subjects.ConclusionsOur data support the hypothesis that oxidative stress and the decrease of antioxidant defenses are associated with the progression of diabetic retinopathy to its proliferative form. Antioxidant supply may have the effect of correcting oxidative stress and inhibiting disease progression.
