While global patterns of bee diversity have been modelled, our understanding of fine‐scale regional patterns is more limited, particularly for under‐sampled regions such as Africa. South Africa is among the exceptions on the African continent; its bee fauna (ca. 1253 species) has been well collected and documented, including mass digitising of its natural history collections. It is a region with high floral diversity, high habitat heterogeneity and variable rainfall seasonality.Here, we combine a South African bee species distributional database (877 bee species) with a geospatial modelling approach to determine fine‐scale (~11 × 11 km grid cell resolution) hotspots of bee species richness, endemism and range‐restricted species.Our analyses, based on the probabilities of occurrence surfaces for each species across 108,803 two‐minute grid cells, reveal three bee hotspots of richness: Winter rainfall, Aseasonal rainfall and Early‐to‐late summer rainfall. These hotspots contain large numbers of endemic and geographically restricted taxa. Hotspots with particularly high bee diversity include the Fynbos, Succulent Karoo and Desert biomes; the latter showing 6–20 times more species per unit area than other biomes. Our results conform with global species‐area patterns: areas of higher‐than‐expected bee density are largely concentrated in Mediterranean and arid habitats.This study further enhances our knowledge in identifying regional and global hotspots of richness and endemism for a keystone group of insects and enabling these to be accounted for when setting conservation priorities. Udeus Champion, 1902 is a weevil genus in the tribe Eugnomini associated with the inflorescences of Cecropia Loefl. (Urticaceae), with 11 valid species distributed in the Neotropics. Species of Udeus are generally rare in collections and their biology is poorly known, despite a high abundance in nature. Here, we describe Udeus cerradensis Lira, de Medeiros & Grossi, sp. nov. from the Brazilian Cerrado, including the first descriptions of larvae and pupae for a Neotropical eugnomine. We assess their role as potential pollinators of their host plant Cecropia saxatilis Snethl. and find that adults do not visit pistillate flowers and therefore are unlikely to be pollinators. This contrasts with previous reports in a different pair of species in Cecropia‐Udeus, suggesting that pollinator agents vary between species in this plant genus. Finally, we provide notes about the predation of larvae of U. cerradensis by social wasps Synoeca surinama (L.) and Protopolybia aff. sedula (Saussure), revealing that, in this instance, an endophytic larva does not prevent predation by a behaviourally flexible predator. Background: Decades following the introduction of vincristine as treatment for haematological malignancies, vincristine-induced peripheral neuropathy (VIPN) remains a pervasive, untreatable side-effect. However there remains a gap in understanding the characteristics of VIPN in adults. This study presents a comprehensive phenotyping of VIPN. Methods: Adult patients (n = 57; age = 59.8 ± 14.6) were assessed cross-sectionally following completion of vincristine (months post treatment = 16.3 ± 15.6, cumulative dose = 7.6 ± 4.4), with a subset of 20 patients assessed prospectively during treatment. Patient reported measures (EORTC-QLQ-CIPN20, R-ODS) were used to profile symptoms and disability. Neurological assessment was undertaken using the Total Neuropathy Score and nerve conduction studies. Sensory threshold and fine motor tasks were also undertaken. Comparisons of data between timepoints were calculated using paired-sample t tests or Wilcoxon matched-pairs signed-rank test. Comparisons between outcome measures were calculated with independent sample t tests or Mann–Whitney U tests for non-parametric data. Results: The majority of patients developed VIPN by mid-treatment (77.8%, 7.0 ± 3.3 weeks post baseline) with the prevalence remaining stable by end-of-treatment (75%, 8.1 ± 1.7 weeks post mid-treatment). By 3 months post-completion, 50% of patients still reported VIPN although there were significant improvements on neurological grading and functional assessment (P < 0.05). VIPN presented with sensorimotor involvement in upper and lower limbs and was associated with decreased sensory and motor nerve amplitudes, reduced fine-motor function and increased disability. Conclusion: VIPN in adults presents as a sensorimotor, upper- and lower-limb neuropathy that significantly impacts disability and function. Neuropathy recovery occurs in a proportion of patients; however, VIPN symptoms may persist and continue to affect long-term quality of life. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

• The paper provides a revision of the existing protocols for videofluoroscopy and discussion on which one should be used in routine clinical practice and in research settings. • The interprofessional routine assessments of bulbar function, with a review of the recent clinical tools specifically developed for SMA and on the assessments performed by speech and language therapists/pathologists in the new SMA phenotypes is provided. • As the new therapies have changed the natural history particular attention should be paid to rehabilitation for bulbar dysfunction. Progressive bulbar involvement is frequent in spinal muscular atrophy, with prevalence and severity of deficits associated with type. The report provides an overview of the presentations made at the workshop grouped into 4 sessions: the first section was dedicated to videofluoroscopy with a revision of the existing protocols and discussion on which one should be used in routine clinical practice and in research settings. The second session was dedicated to interprofessional routine assessments of bulbar function, with a review of the recent clinical tools specifically developed for SMA. The third section was focused on the assessments performed by speech and language therapists/pathologists in the new SMA phenotypes. The last section focused on how the new therapies have changed the approach in rehabilitation for bulbar dysfunction. Mutations in the CLN6 gene cause late infantile neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis, a neurodegenerative lysosomal storage disease of childhood onset. Clinically, individuals present with progressive motor and cognitive regression, ataxia, and early death. The aim of this study is to establish natural history data of individuals with classic, late-infantile-onset (age less than five years) CLN6 disease. We analyzed the natural history of 25 patients with late-infantile-onset CLN6, utilizing the Hamburg motor-language scale to measure disease progression. The key outcomes were CLN6 disease progression, assessed by rate of decline in motor and language clinical domain summary scores (0 to 6 total points); onset and type of first symptom; onset of first seizure; and time from first symptom to complete loss of function. Median age of total motor and language onset of decline was 42 months (interquartile range 36 to 48). The estimated rate of decline in total score was at a slope of −1.20 (S.D. 0.30) per year, after the start of decline. Complete loss of both motor and language function was found to be, on average, 88.1 months (S.D. 13.5). To our knowledge, this is the largest international study that monitors the longitudinal natural history and progression of CLN6 disease. Brain arteriovenous malformations (bAVMs) are aberrant arteriovenous shunts through a vascular nidus with no intervening capillary beds. They are one of the commonest causes of spontaneous intracranial haemorrhage in children and may be associated with significant morbidity and mortality in cases of rupture. Treatment strategies include microsurgical resection, endovascular embolisation, stereotactic radiosurgery, multimodality treatment with a combination thereof, and particularly in high-grade bAVMs, conservative management. Clinicians involved in treating bAVMs need to have familiarity with the natural history pertaining to bAVMs in terms of risk of rupture, risk factors elevating rupture risk as well as understanding the clinical manifestations of bAVMs. This invited review serves to provide a synthesis on natural history and clinical presentation of bAVMs with particular focus in children to inform decision-making pertaining to management. Diet studies of cracids have highlighted the group's significance as seed dispersers and the impact of their disappearance from natural environments. However, the diet of Penelope jacucaca remains largely unknown, limiting our understanding of its natural history and potential ecosystem services. In this study, we investigated the diet of P. jacucaca in two Caatinga fragments with varying levels of preservation using fecal material analysis. The diet of the species consisted primarily of fruits, flowers, and leaves, comprising a total of 22 food items. The number of seeds found in individual fecal samples exhibited a negative correlation with individual seed masses. The species demonstrated a preference for zoocoric fruits of different sizes from the local vegetation. The diet varied between the sampled areas, suggesting that P. jacucaca exhibits dietary flexibility based on local vegetation. However, it is also possible that fragmentation affects the nutritional value of the species' diet. Due to its large body size, the White-browed guan can ingest a wide variety of fruits, including larger ones, incorporating seeds that are rarely explored by other birds. We propose that plant species with "large" seeds (> 15 mm), such as Ziziphus joazeiro, Brosimum gaudichaudii, and Ximenia americana, would be mainly negatively affected by the absence of P. jacucaca in the studied areas. The decline in the population of this important seed disperser in the region is likely to have negative implications for the viability of many zoocoric plants, thereby posing a threat to the vegetation of the studied fragments. Newborn screening for 5qSMA offers the potential for early, ideally pre-symptomatic, therapeutic intervention. However, limited data exist on the outcomes of individuals with 4 copies of SMN2, and there is no consensus within the SMA treatment community regarding early treatment initiation in this subgroup. To provide evidence-based insights into disease progression, we performed a retrospective analysis of 268 patients with 4 copies of SMN2 from the SMArtCARE registry in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Inclusion criteria required comprehensive baseline data and diagnosis outside of newborn screening. Only data prior to initiation of disease-modifying treatment were included. The median age at disease onset was 3.0 years, with a mean of 6.4 years. Significantly, 55% of patients experienced symptoms before the age of 36 months. 3% never learned to sit unaided, a further 13% never gained the ability to walk independently and 33% of ambulatory patients lost this ability during the course of the disease. 43% developed scoliosis, 6.3% required non-invasive ventilation and 1.1% required tube feeding. In conclusion, our study, in line with previous observations, highlights the substantial phenotypic heterogeneity in SMA. Importantly, this study provides novel insights: the median age of disease onset in patients with 4 SMN2 copies typically occurs before school age, and in half of the patients even before the age of three years. These findings support a proactive approach, particularly early treatment initiation, in this subset of SMA patients diagnosed pre-symptomatically. Objective: Rathke cleft cysts (RCCs) are benign, epithelial-lined sellar lesions that arise from remnants of the craniopharyngeal duct. Due to their rarity in the pediatric population, data are limited regarding the natural history and optimal management of growing or symptomatic RCCs. We present our institutional experience with the surgical management of RCCs. Methods: We performed a retrospective study of consecutive RCC patients ≤ 18 years old treated surgically at our institution between 2006 and 2022. Results: Overall, 567 patients with a diagnosis of pituitary mass or cyst were identified. Of these, 31 had a histopathological diagnosis of RCC, 58% female and 42% male. The mean age was 13.2 ± 4.2 years. Presenting symptoms included headache (58%), visual changes (32%), and endocrinopathies or growth delay (26%); 13% were identified incidentally and subsequently demonstrated growth on serial imaging. Six percent presented with symptomatic intralesional hemorrhage. Surgical approach was transsphenoidal for 90% of patients and orbitozygomatic for 10%. Preoperative headaches resolved in 61% of patients and preoperative visual deficits improvement in 55% after surgery. New pituitary axis deficits were seen in 9.7% of patients. Only two complications occurred from a first-time surgery: one cerebrospinal fluid leak requiring lumbar drain placement, and one case of epistaxis requiring cauterization. No patients experienced new visual or neurological deficits. Patients were followed postoperatively with serial imaging at a mean follow-up was 62.9 ± 58.4 months. Recurrence requiring reoperation occurred in 32% of patients. Five-year progression-free survival was 47.9%. Except for one patient with multiple neurological deficits from a concurrent tectal glioma, all patients had a modified Rankin Scale score of 0 or 1 (good outcome) at last follow-up. Conclusion: Due to their secretory epithelium, pediatric RCCs may demonstrate rapid growth and can cause symptoms due to local mass effect. Surgical management of symptomatic or growing pediatric RCCs via cyst fenestration or partial resection of the cyst wall can be performed safely, with good neurologic outcomes. Purpose: Given that syrinx is often considered an indication of surgery in children with Chiari I malformation (CM1), understanding of the natural history of these patients is very challenging. In this study, we investigate the natural history of children with CM1 that have syrinx and/or prominence of the central canal on presentation. Methods: All pediatric Chiari I patients who had syrinx and/or prominence of the central canal who underwent MR imaging of the head and spine from 2007 to 2020 were reviewed. Patients were divided into 3 groups (early surgery, delayed surgery, and conservative management). We focused on those patients who did not initially undergo surgery and had at least 1 year of clinical follow-up. We assessed if there were any radiological features that would correlate with need for delayed surgical intervention. Results: Thirty-seven patients met the inclusion criteria. Twenty-one patients were female and 16 were male. The mean age at presentation was 8.7 (5.8 SD). Fourteen (38%) patients had early surgical intervention, with a mean of 2.5 months after initial presentation, 8 (16%) had delayed surgery due to new or progressive neurological symptoms and 46% of patients did not require intervention during follow-up. The length of tonsillar herniation and the position of the obex were associated with the need of surgery in patients who were initially treated conservatively. Conclusion: In pediatric patients with CM1 with syringomyelia and prominence of the central canal, conservative treatment is initially appropriate when symptoms are absent or mild. Close follow-up of patients with CM1 and dilatation of the central canal who have an obex position below the foramen magnum and greater tonsillar herniation is suggested, as these patients show a trend towards clinical deterioration over time and may require earlier surgical intervention. Pediatric pial arteriovenous shunts in the brain and spine are challenging to understand because of low incidence, variable presentation, and associations with genetic syndromes. What is known about their natural history comes from reviews of small series. To better understand the natural history and role for intervention, two cases are presented followed by a review of the literature. In the first case, an infant with a prior history of intracranial hemorrhage from a ruptured pial fistula returns for elective embolization for a second pial fistula which was found to be spontaneously thrombosed 2 weeks later. In the second case, a 5-year-old with a vertebro-vertebral fistula, identified on work up for a heart murmur and documented with diagnostic angiography, is brought for elective embolization 6 weeks later where spontaneous thrombosis is identified. In reviewing the literature on pediatric single-hole fistulae of the brain and spine, the authors offer some morphologic considerations for identifying which high-flow fistulae may undergo spontaneous thrombosis to decrease the potentially unnecessary risk associated with interventions in small children. Aim: Intraspecific genetic variation is key for adaptation and survival in changing environments and is known to be influenced by many factors, including population size, dispersal and life‐history traits. We investigated genetic variation within Neotropical amphibian species to provide insights into how natural history traits, phylogenetic relatedness, climatic and geographic characteristics can explain intraspecific genetic diversity. Location: Neotropics. Taxon: Amphibians. Methods: We assembled data sets using open‐access databases for natural history traits, genetic sequences, phylogenetic trees, climatic and geographic data. For each species, we calculated overall nucleotide diversity (π) and tested for isolation by distance (IBD) and isolation by environment (IBE). We then identified predictors of π, IBD and IBE using random forest (RF) regression or RF classification. We also fitted phylogenetic generalized linear mixed models (PGLMMs) to predict π, IBD and IBE. Results: We compiled 4052 mitochondrial DNA sequences from 256 amphibian species (230 frogs and 26 salamanders), georeferencing 2477 sequences from 176 species that were not linked to occurrence data. RF regressions and PGLMMs were congruent in identifying range size and precipitation (σ) as the most important predictors of π, influencing it positively. RF classification and PGLMMs identified minimum elevation as an important predictor of IBD; most species without IBD tended to occur at higher elevations. Maximum latitude and precipitation (σ) were the best predictors of IBE, and most species without IBE occur at lower latitudes and in areas with more variable precipitation. Main Conclusions: This study identified predictors of genetic variation in Neotropical amphibians using both machine learning and phylogenetic methods. This approach was valuable to determine which predictors were congruent between methods. We found that species with small ranges or living in zones with less variable precipitation tended to have low genetic diversity. We also showed that Western Mesoamerica, Andes and Atlantic Forest biogeographic units harbour high diversity across many species that should be prioritized for protection. Recent proliferation of GPS technology has transformed animal movement research. Yet, time‐series data from this recent technology rarely span beyond a decade, constraining longitudinal research. Long‐term field sites hold valuable historic animal location records, including hand‐drawn maps and semantic descriptions. Here, we introduce a generalised workflow for converting such records into reliable location data to estimate home ranges, using 30 years of sleep‐site data from 11 white‐faced capuchin (Cebus imitator) groups in Costa Rica. Our findings illustrate that historic sleep locations can reliably recover home range size and geometry. We showcase the opportunity our approach presents to resolve open questions that can only be addressed with very long‐term data, examining how home ranges are affected by climate cycles and demographic change. We urge researchers to translate historical records into usable movement data before this knowledge is lost; it is essential to understanding how animals are responding to our changing world. Objectives: Many congenital hydronephroses spontaneously resolve. This study evaluated a long‐term follow‐up of more than 4 years of patients with congenital hydronephrosis at a single center. Methods: In total, 215 patients (286 kidneys) with congenital hydronephrosis were included. Hydronephrosis outcomes (resolution, improvement, and persistence) and time‐to‐outcome were evaluated. Results: Fourteen patients underwent early surgical intervention until the age of 2 years. A total of 189 congenital hydronephrosis cases (66%) showed resolution at a median of 16 months (interquartile range: 7–21 months) and 169 (80%) of 210 kidneys with grade I to II hydronephrosis showed resolution at a median of 14 months (interquartile range: 6–23 months). Of 76 kidneys with grade III to IV hydronephrosis, 24 (32%) showed resolution at a median of 29 months (interquartile range: 24–41 months), and 56 (74%) showed improvement to grade II or less at a median of 12 months (interquartile range: 5–23 months). Of the 76 kidneys with grade III to IV hydronephrosis, five required delayed pyeloplasty at a median of 66 months (interquartile range: 42–89 months). One patient was asymptomatic, with a marked worsening of hydronephrosis and decreased renal function 6 years after the resolution of hydronephrosis. Conclusions: None of the patients with grade I to II hydronephrosis required surgical treatment, and a shorter follow‐up may be sufficient. Grade III to IV severe hydronephrosis should be considered for a longer and more careful follow‐up, given the possibility of asymptomatic exacerbation of hydronephrosis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Summary: Recursive partitioning of healthy consortia led to the development of the Clonal Hematopoiesis Risk Score (CHRS) for clonal haematopoiesis (CH); however, in the practical setting, most cases of CH are diagnosed after patients present with cytopenias or related symptoms. To address this real‐world population, we characterize the clinical trajectories of 94 patients with CH and distinguish CH harbouring canonical DNMT3A/TET2/ASXL1 mutations alone ('sole DTA') versus all other groups ('non‐sole DTA'). TET2, rather than DNMT3A, was the most prevalent mutation in the real‐world setting. Sole DTA patients did not progress to myeloid neoplasm (MN) in the absence of acquisition of other mutations. Contrastingly, 14 (20.1%) of 67 non‐sole DTA patients progressed to MN. CHRS assessment showed a higher frequency of high‐risk CH in non‐sole DTA (vs. sole DTA) patients and in progressors (vs. non‐progressors). RUNX1 mutation conferred the strongest risk for progression to MN (odds ratio [OR] 10.27, 95% CI 2.00–52.69, p = 0.0053). The mean variant allele frequency across all genes was higher in progressors than in non‐progressors (36.9% ± 4.62% vs. 24.1% ± 1.67%, p = 0.0064). The article explores a specific type of paroxysmal nocturnal haemoglobinuria (PNH) known as ahemolytic PNH or white cell PNH. Unlike typical PNH, this subtype does not exhibit signs of hemolysis but is characterized by bone marrow failure and thrombophilia. Introduction Material and Methods Results Conclusions There is a gap in knowledge regarding development of endometriosis and adenomyosis lesions visible at transvaginal ultrasound. The objectives were to evaluate if women with symptoms suggestive of endometriosis or adenomyosis but normal ultrasound examination develop endometriosis or adenomyosis lesions visible at ultrasound over time and if alterations of symptoms over time are associated with ultrasound findings at follow‐up.This was a prospective cohort study of 100 symptomatic women with normal initial ultrasound examination during 2014–2017 who underwent follow‐up ultrasound examination in 2022. Symptoms suggestive of endometriosis were assessed using visual analog scale at both examinations and minimal clinically important difference of 10 mm was considered as a significant alteration. An examiner with expertise in advanced ultrasound examination of endometriosis performed transvaginal ultrasound examinations in accordance with the consensus protocol by the International Deep Endometriosis Analysis group.At follow‐up ultrasound examination of 100 women, 13 (13% [95% CI 7.1–21.2]) had visible endometriosis or adenomyosis lesions, 8 (8% [95% CI 3.5–15.2]) had endometriosis lesions, and 6 (6% [95% CI 2.2–12.6]) had adenomyosis. At follow‐up, women with endometriosis or adenomyosis lesions reported lower intensity of dysmenorrhea and chronic pelvic pain compared to women without lesions (48 mm [IQR 16–79] vs. 73 mm [IQR 46–85] and 45 mm [IQR 26–57] vs. 57 mm [IQR 36–75], p = 0.087 and p = 0.026, respectively). None of the women with endometriosis or adenomyosis lesions reported increased intensity of dysmenorrhea at follow‐up, compared to 32/86 women (37%) without lesions (p = 0.008). Increased intensity of chronic pelvic pain tended to be less common in women with lesions compared to those without (3/13 [23%] vs. 35/86 [41%], p = 0.223).Our findings suggest that in symptomatic women, endometriosis and adenomyosis lesions visible at ultrasound may develop over time. However, majority of women remain having normal ultrasound examinations despite symptoms. Exacerbation of dysmenorrhea or chronic pelvic pain during follow‐up was not associated with the development of endometriosis or adenomyosis lesions visible at ultrasound, suggesting that even women with less severe symptoms might benefit from a follow‐up ultrasound when indicated. Among phytophagous insects, life history often evolves as a strategy to cope with seasonality in host plant availability. Whereas specialization often leads to dormancy, aestivation, or longevity, polyphagous species bridge between periods of host availability by exploiting alternative host plants. The aim of the present work was to characterize the life histories of four species of specialist and generalist uni‐ and multivoltine frugivorous fruit flies – Ceratitis capitata Wiedemann, Anastrepha fraterculus Wiedemann, Rhagoletis blanchardi Aczel, and Rhagoletotrypeta pastranai Aczel (all Diptera: Tephritidae) – inhabiting in sympatry in Las Yungas phytogeographical province in Tucumán (northwestern Argentina). For this purpose, infested host plant fruits were sequentially collected during two consecutive years, and flies recovered from these fruits were subjected to demographic experiments to establish longevity and overwintering mechanisms. The results indicated that life cycles were tightly related to host fruit availability, where multivoltine species sequentially exploit different host plants over the year, whereas univoltine species must undergo pupal dormancy to reach the next host fructification period and may extend the duration of dormancy when climatic conditions are acyclic and unpredictable. The present study may broaden knowledge about diapausing Tephritidae in subtropical regions and may contribute to an increased conceptual basis for the improvement of pest control strategies, such as the sterile insect technique (SIT). The natural history of moderate/severe atrial functional mitral regurgitation (AFMR) is unknown. The authors sought to study the incidence of left ventricular (LV) systolic dysfunction (LVSD), progression or regression of ≥mild-moderate AFMR, and impact on mortality. Adults with left atrial (LA) volume index ≥40 mL/m2, ≥mild-moderate AFMR, and follow-up echocardiogram were followed for incident LVSD (ejection fraction <50% and ≥10% lower than baseline), progression of mild-moderate/moderate AFMR to severe, and persistent regression of AFMR to no/trivial. Relation of AFMR progression or regression as time-dependent covariates with all-cause mortality was studied. Incidence of LVSD was compared with patients with no/mild AFMR matched on age, sex, comorbidities and ejection fraction. Patients were followed until mitral intervention, myocardial infarction, or last follow-up. A total of 635 patients (median age 75 years, 51% female, 96% mild-moderate/moderate AFMR, 4% severe AFMR) were included. Over a median 2.2 years (Q1-Q3: 1.0-4.3 years), incidence rates per 100 person-years were 3.2 for LVSD (P = 0.52 vs patients with no/mild AFMR), 1.9 for progression of AFMR, and 3.9 for regression. Female sex and larger LA volume index were independently associated with progression, whereas younger age, male sex, absent atrial fibrillation, and higher LA emptying fraction were independently associated with regression. Neither AFMR progression nor regression was independently associated with mortality. Instead, independent risk factors for mortality included older age, concentric LV geometry, and higher estimated LV filling and pulmonary pressures. In patients with predominantly mild-moderate/moderate AFMR, regression of MR was more common than progression, but neither was associated with mortality. Accurately determining the diet of wild animals can be challenging if food items are small, visible only briefly, or rendered visually unidentifiable in the digestive system. In some food caching species, an additional challenge is determining whether consumed diet items have been previously stored or are fresh. The Canada jay (Perisoreus canadensis) is a generalist resident of North American boreal and subalpine forests with anatomical and behavioural adaptations allowing it to make thousands of arboreal food caches in summer and fall that are presumably responsible for its high winter survival and late winter/early spring breeding. We used DNA fecal metabarcoding to obtain novel information on nestling diets and compiled a dataset of 662 published and unpublished direct observations or stomach contents identifications of natural foods consumed by Canada jays throughout the year. We then used detailed natural history information to make informed decisions on whether each item identified to species in the diets of winter adults and nestlings was best characterized as 'likely cached', 'likely fresh' (i.e., was available as a non-cached item when it appeared in a jay's feces or stomach), or 'either possible'. Of the 87 food items consumed by adults in the winter, 39% were classified as 'likely cached' and 6% were deemed to be 'likely fresh'. For nestlings, 29% of 125 food items identified to species were 'likely cached' and 38% were 'likely fresh'. Our results support both the indispensability of cached food for Canada jay winter survival and previous suggestions that cached food is important for late winter/early spring breeding. Our work highlights the value of combining metabarcoding, stomach contents analysis, and direct observations to determine the cached vs. non-cached origins of consumed food items and the identity of food caches, some of which could be especially vulnerable to degradation through climate change. Genomes contain conserved non-coding sequences that perform important biological functions, such as gene regulation. We present a phylogenetic method, PhyloAcc-C, that associates nucleotide substitution rates with changes in a continuous trait of interest. The method takes as input a multiple sequence alignment of conserved elements, continuous trait data observed in extant species, and a background phylogeny and substitution process. Gibbs sampling is used to assign rate categories (background, conserved, accelerated) to lineages and explore whether the assigned rate categories are associated with increases or decreases in the rate of trait evolution. We test our method using simulations and then illustrate its application using mammalian body size and lifespan data previously analyzed with respect to protein coding genes. Like other studies, we find processes such as tumor suppression, telomere maintenance, and p53 regulation to be related to changes in longevity and body size. In addition, we also find that skeletal genes, and developmental processes, such as sprouting angiogenesis, are relevant. Author summary: Biologists hope to use data from diverse species to identify the genetic basis of continuous traits such as lifespan or beak shape. To do so, they need methodologies that relate genotypic and phenotypic evolution, while taking account of the relationship between species. The practice of integrating data from many species in this systematic way is relatively new, and existing approaches to the problem are often ad hoc, focus on protein coding genes, or involve discretizing continuous measurements. We avoid these limitations and develop a statistical model and software package that can be used to rapidly analyze alignments with respect to a continuous trait. Our method is illustrated by describing 136,859 conserved non-coding elements from 61 mammalian species with respect to the trait 'long-lived and large-bodied'. We report on the loci highlighted by our model and describe how our results compare to recent studies taking other methodological approaches. We suggest approaches like ours are an important step towards realizing the potential of data collected from across the animal kingdom, whether the aim is to increase our understanding of natural history or to better understand human biology. Background: Migraine is a highly prevalent neurological disease with a substantial societal burden due to lost productivity. From a societal perspective, we assessed the cost-effectiveness of eptinezumab for the preventive treatment of migraine. Methods: An individual patient simulation of discrete competing events was developed to evaluate eptinezumab cost-effectiveness compared to best supportive care for adults in the United Kingdom with ≥ 4 migraine days per month and prior failure of ≥ 3 preventive migraine treatments. Individuals with sampled baseline characteristics were created to represent this population, which comprised dedicated episodic and chronic migraine subpopulations. Clinical efficacy, utility, and work productivity inputs were based on results from the DELIVER randomised controlled trial (NCT04418765). Timing of natural history events and treatment holidays—informed by the literature—were simulated to unmask any natural improvement of the disease unrelated to treatment. The primary outcomes were monthly migraine days, migraine-associated costs, quality-adjusted life years (QALYs), incremental cost-effectiveness ratio, and net monetary benefit, each evaluated over a 5-year time horizon from 2020. Secondary analyses explored a lifetime horizon and an alternative treatment stopping rule. Results: Treatment with eptinezumab resulted in an average of 0.231 QALYs gained at a saving of £4,894 over 5 years, making eptinezumab dominant over best supportive care (i.e., better health outcomes and less costly). This result was confirmed by the probabilistic analysis and all alternative assumption scenarios under the same societal perspective. Univariate testing of inputs showed net monetary benefit was most sensitive to the number of days of productivity loss, and monthly salary. Conclusions: This economic evaluation shows that from a societal perspective, eptinezumab is a cost-effective treatment in patients with ≥ 4 migraine days per month and for whom ≥ 3 other preventive migraine treatments have failed. FXTAS is a neurodegenerative disorder occurring in some Fragile X Messenger Ribonucleoprotein 1 (FMR1) gene premutation carriers (PMCs) and is characterized by cerebellar ataxia, tremor, and cognitive deficits that negatively impact balance and gait and increase fall risk. Dual-tasking (DT) cognitive-motor paradigms and challenging balance conditions may have the capacity to reveal markers of FXTAS onset. Our objectives were to determine the impact of dual-tasking and sensory and stance manipulation on balance in FXTAS and potentially detect subtle postural sway deficits in FMR1 PMCs who are asymptomatic for signs of FXTAS on clinical exam. Participants with FXTAS, PMCs without FXTAS, and controls underwent balance testing using an inertial sensor system. Stance, vision, surface stability, and cognitive demand were manipulated in 30 s trials. FXTAS participants had significantly greater total sway area, jerk, and RMS sway than controls under almost all balance conditions but were most impaired in those requiring vestibular control. PMCs without FXTAS had significantly greater RMS sway compared with controls in the feet apart, firm, single task conditions both with eyes open and closed (EC) and the feet together, firm, EC, DT condition. Postural sway deficits in the RMS postural sway variability domain in asymptomatic PMCs might represent prodromal signs of FXTAS. This information may be useful in providing sensitive biomarkers of FXTAS onset and as quantitative balance measures in future interventional trials and longitudinal natural history studies. Background/Objectives: This one-year prospective observational study, conducted at two centers, aimed to report the natural history of retinal sensitivity (RS) loss in diabetic macular ischemia (DMI). Methods: Patients with stable-treated proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR) were recruited if there was evidence of DMI on optical coherence tomography angiography, defined as a foveal avascular zone ≥ 0.5 mm2 or parafoveal capillary dropout ≥ 1 quadrant. The minimal visual acuity required for performing microperimetry (MP) was ≥54 Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study letters (Snellen equivalent 20/80). The overall RS (oRS) and pointwise sensitivity (PWS) within the 3 × 3 mm macula were assessed at baseline and twelve months. A value <25 decibels (dB) was defined as impaired RS, and a decrease of 2 and 7 dB was regarded as mild and severe loss, respectively. Results: A total of 88 patients (97 eyes) were included. No statistically significant MP changes were detected at one year. However, 10% of the cohort lost oRS ≥ 2 dB, and 73% lost ≥2 dB PWS in ≥5 loci, whereas 1% lost oRS ≥ 7 dB, and 4% lost ≥7 dB PWS in ≥5 loci. The foveola and temporal parafovea were the most vulnerable to severe RS loss. Compared to their counterpart, eyes with baseline oRS ≥ 25 dB had significantly more RS loss in the macula and superior parafovea (55% versus 32% and 53% versus 28%, both p = 0.01). Conclusions: Rather than oRS loss, ≥2 dB loss in PWS in ≥5 loci is a more feasible outcome measure for clinical trials in DMI. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Southern giant petrels (Macronectes giganteus) are important consumers that range across the oceans throughout the southern hemisphere. In Argentina, previous studies have shown they eat primarily pinnipeds and penguins, which they are assumed to scavenge, although there are occasional anecdotes of them attacking living penguins. Here we describe a predation attempt by a trio of southern giant petrels on a molting adult Magellanic penguin (Spheniscus magellanicus) at the large colony at Punta Tombo, Argentina. We relate giant petrel attendance patterns at the colony to the penguins' phenology, showing how giant petrel numbers rise with the increasing prevalence of vulnerable penguins. We suggest that living penguins—both fledglings and adults—may constitute a more seasonally significant proportion of the giant petrel diet than previously assumed, and their capture may represent a specialized predation technique. Niemann-Pick disease type C1 (NPC1) is a lysosomal disorder due to impaired intracellular cholesterol transport out of the endolysosomal compartment. Marked heterogeneity has been observed in individuals with the same NPC1 genotype, thus suggesting a significant effect of modifier genes. Prior work demonstrated that decreased SOAT1 activity decreased disease severity in an NPC1 mouse model. Thus, we hypothesized that a polymorphism associated with decreased SOAT1 expression might influence the NPC1 phenotype. Phenotyping and genomic sequencing of 117 individuals with NPC1 was performed as part of a Natural History trial. Phenotyping included determination of disease severity and disease burden. Significant clinical heterogeneity is present in individuals homozygous for the NPC1I1061T variant and in siblings. Analysis of the SOAT1 polymorphism, rs1044925 (A>C), showed a significant association of the C-allele with earlier age of neurological onset. The C-allele may be associated with a higher Annualized Severity Index Score as well as increased frequency of liver disease and seizures. A polymorphism associated with decreased expression of SOAT1 appears to be a genetic modifier of the NPC1 phenotype. This finding is consistent with prior data showing decreased phenotypic severity in Npc1-/-:Soat1-/- mice and supports efforts to investigate the potential of SOAT1 inhibitors as a potential therapy for NPC1. Samuel Holker Haslam (1797–1856) was an English naturalist whose plant and insect specimens are extant in several museum collections. Born into a family of cotton manufacturers in Lancashire, Haslam used his inherited wealth to set himself up as a country gentleman, eventually settling near Milnthorpe in Westmorland. He was a bibliophile, subscribing to several important fine colour-plate books on natural history and gardening, a Fellow of the Linnean Society of London and a member of many other societies spanning botany, entomology, palaeontology, agriculture and antiquarianism. He collected primarily in the Lake District (Westmorland, Cumberland and north Lancashire), West Yorkshire, Cheshire, Cambridgeshire, Gloucestershire, Somerset and the Channel Islands, especially Guernsey. A box of invertebrates, mainly insects, some of which have labels dated between 1838 and 1841, was acquired by the author at a public auction in 2022. The box and the style of preservation is consistent with a collection assembled in the late 1830s. It is postulated that this small collection once formed part of the museum assembled by William MacGillivray at Marischal College, Aberdeen, Scotland, following his appointment as Regius Professor of Civil and Natural History in 1841. Henry Gustave Hiller was born in Chorlton-cum-Hardy, England, in 1864. He worked in Liverpool as a stained glass artist, but was also a keen microscopist and an amateur entomologist and arachnologist, with a particular interest in the life histories of spiders. He was an active member of Liverpool's natural history societies in his leisure time where he combined his passion for natural history with his artistic talent. His arachnology and entomological illustrations of Argyroneta aquatica, Chironomidae and Culicidae are part of the zoology collections of National Museums Liverpool's World Museum. In retirement, he lived at Rhosneigr, Anglesey, Wales, where he studied and illustrated the reproductive structures of marine algae. The watercolour sketches of the British marine algae he prepared are preserved in the collections of National Museums Liverpool's World Museum herbarium (LIV) along with the dried specimens of seaweeds that he collected. Bavarian glassblower Herman Oscar Mueller (fl. 1900s–1960s) was employed for over forty years at the American Museum of Natural History, New York, in his role as a glassblower making intricate glass models of biological subjects. From 1903 to 1945 he produced over one thousand models of invertebrate organisms that combined beauty, morphological accuracy and exceptional glassblowing skill. His talent often surpassed that of the famous Blaschkas of Dresden. Mueller enjoyed worldwide fame in his lifetime, yet his life and models have since fallen into relative obscurity, and few publications record his achievements. In contrast, the Blaschkas are the subject of extensive documentation. To correct this imbalance, Mueller's life and work are here analyzed, drawing on the large collection of primary sources in the Research Library of the American Museum of Natural History, New York, the Library of Congress, Washington DC, and the Rakow Research Library of the Corning Museum of Glass, Corning, New York, amongst others. Mueller's life provides important insights into his highly-specialized role as a museum glassblower, the changing role of natural history collections in the early twentieth century, and the ways in which the lives of important figures can be obscured by a focus on other, better documented individuals. Argiope anasuja Thorell, 1887 is a species of orb-weaving spider found in tropical and subtropical regions of the world. Despite its widespread distribution, little is known about its natural history and mating behavior. In this study, I describe some aspects of the natural history and mating behaviors of A. anasuja in captivity and in natural habitats. The spiders were found to occupy less shady areas close to water bodies, building their webs between 50 to 200 cm above the ground level. Web decorations were common in female webs, primarily in the central area, and consisted of dense zigzag bands of silk. A significant difference in copulation duration was observed between cannibalized and non-cannibalized individuals. Furthermore, a significant difference in copulation duration was found between individuals in natural environments and laboratory conditions. However, no significant difference was observed in courtship duration between individuals in natural environment and laboratory conditions. Understanding the mating behaviors of A. anasuja is important because they play a key role in determining the success of mating. Background: Ornithine transcarbamylase deficiency (OTCD) due to an X‐linked OTC mutation, is responsible for moderate to severe hyperammonemia (HA) with substantial morbidity and mortality. About 80% of females with OTCD remain apparently "asymptomatic" with limited studies of their clinical characteristics and long‐term health vulnerabilities. Multimodal neuroimaging studies and executive function testing have shown that asymptomatic females exhibit limitations when stressed to perform at higher cognitive load and had reduced activation of the prefrontal cortex. This retrospective study aims to improve understanding of factors that might predict development of defined complications and serious illness in apparent asymptomatic females. A proband and her daughter are presented to highlight the utility of multimodal neuroimaging studies and to underscore that asymptomatic females with OTCD are not always asymptomatic. Methods: We review data from 302 heterozygote females with OTCD enrolled in the Urea Cycle Disorders Consortium (UCDC) longitudinal natural history database. We apply multiple neuroimaging modalities in the workup of a proband and her daughter. Results: Among the females in the database, 143 were noted as symptomatic at baseline (Sym). We focused on females who were asymptomatic (Asx, n = 111) and those who were asymptomatic initially upon enrollment in study but who later became symptomatic sometime during follow‐up (Asx/Sym, n = 22). The majority of Asx (86%) and Asx/Sym (75%) subjects did not restrict protein at baseline, and ~38% of Asx and 33% of Asx/Sym subjects suffered from mild to severe neuropsychiatric conditions such as mood disorder and sleep problems. The risk of mild to severe HA sometime later in life for the Asx and Asx/Sym subjects as a combined group was ~4% (5/133), with ammonia ranging from 77 to 470 μM and at least half (2/4) of subjects requiring hospital admission and nitrogen scavenger therapy. For this combined group, the median age of first HA crisis was 50 years, whereas the median age of first symptom which included neuropsychiatric and/or behavioral symptoms was 17 years. The multimodal neuroimaging studies in female heterozygotes with OTCD also underscore that asymptomatic female heterozygotes with OTCD (e.g., proband) are not always asymptomatic. Conclusions: Analysis of Asx and Asx/Sym females with OTCD in this study suggests that future evidence‐based management guidelines and/or a clinical risk score calculator for this cohort could be useful management tools to reduce morbidity and improve long‐term quality of life. Background: Foetal thoracic lesions are uncommon, with the incidence of 1 in 15,000 live births. Antenatal monitoring of these lesions is required to prognosticate the parents about the postnatal outcome of the lesions and about the well-being of the baby. Foetal ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are the modalities to detect these lesions and follow-up during pregnancy and postnatally. Congenital pulmonary adenomatoid malformations (CPAM), congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) and bronchopulmonary sequestrations (BPS) are the commonly detected foetal thoracic lesions. Parameters such as congenital cystic adenomatoid malformation (CCAM) volume ratio (CVR) and lung-to-head ratio (LHR) determine the prognosis of these lesions. With this background, we planned to study the prognosis and outcome of antenatally detected thoracic lesions. Materials and Methods: This was a prospective study carried out for 2 years (January 2017 to December 2018). Pregnant females with foetuses diagnosed to have thoracic lesions on the second-and third-trimester ultrasound and foetal MRI were enrolled for the study. CVR and LHR were noted. Outcomes were analysed in terms of the need of termination of pregnancy, foetal or neonatal demise and need of surgery or conservative management. Results: Of a total of 521 pregnancies, thoracic lesions were detected in 22 (4.22%) cases. Individually, the incidence of each lesion was: CPAM-10 (45.45%), BPS-5 (22.73%), CDH-5 (22.73%) and congenital higher airway obstruction-2 (9.1%). Chromosomal screening was normal in 100% of cases. Follow-up was done for 2 years. Termination of pregnancy was required in 3 (13.64%) cases, postnatal death occurred in 4 (18.2%) cases, surgery was required in three cases of CDH soon after birth and two cases of extralobar BPS at 2 years of age. 10 (45.45%) cases were managed conservatively, who are doing well at 2-year follow-up. Conclusion: CPAMs, BPSs and CDH are the commonly detected antenatal thoracic lesions. Ultrasonography and MRI help detect and prognosticate the parents about the outcomes of these lesions. CVR and LHR with associated congenital malformations are important prognostic markers for these lesions. Frostius pernambucensis is a phytotelm-breeding frog with endotrophic larvae. Although the larvae were formally described, no aspect of its internal morphology is known. In this paper, we re-describe the tadpole based on a large sample, describe its internal anatomy (buccopharyngeal cavity and musculo-skeletal system), provide data on natural history, and discuss the evolution of endotrophy and phytotelma colonization. The tadpoles of F. pernambucensis are highly modified, with depressed bodies, reduced mouthparts, and long tails. Many character-states described for these tadpoles can be related to its endotrophic development. Consequence of this highly modified phenotype, we propose several novel putative synapomorphies for the genus: (1) labial tooth row formula 1/1; (2) absence of pustulation in the buccal roof and (3) floor; (4) absence of median ridge; (5) absence of lateral ridge papillae; (6) absence of secretory ridges and pores; (7) absence of filter plates; (7) m. subarcualis rectus II–IV originating on ceratobranchial III; (8) m. subarcualis rectus II–IV inserting on ceratobranchial I; (8) ventral slip of the m. subarcualis rectus I inserting on the ceratobranchial III; (9) suprarostral corpora fused to the cornua trabeculae; (10) commissura quadratoorbitalis absent; (11) cerabranchial II attached to the planum hypobranchiale; and (12) ceratobranchial III attached to the planum hypobranchiale. Finally, we also propose that the presence of a single pair of infralabial papilla could represent a synapomorphy of bufonids. Objective: The prevalence TFCC injuries has increased over time. However, there remains a lack of understanding of its natural history. Along with the paucity of evidence on treatment options, there is lack of consensus on how best to manage them. This is a retrospective study with subgroup cohort analysis, examining variables and management options associated with patient‐reported disability and pain. Methods: Patients from a metropolitan health network who have been referred for Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) of the wrist between 2010 and 2019 and identified to have TFCC injury, were followed up to determine patient‐reported outcomes. Disability of arm shoulder and hand scores (DASH) and visual assessment pain scale (VAS) were used to measure disability and pain respectively. An 'excellent' DASH and VAS scores were defined as ≤10 and ≤2, respectively. Results: One hundred and twenty‐four patients met the inclusion criteria and consented to participate in this study. There were 53 patients with excellent DASH score, 95 excellent VAS score and 51 excellent outcomes at mean follow‐up of 75.5 months (Range: 5–402.8 months). Concomitant pathology and surgical management were less likely to have excellent DASH and VAS scores, while traumatic aetiology and smoking were less likely to have excellent VAS score. Age was not predictive of excellent DASH or VAS score. Conclusions: Surgical management of TFCC injuries were associated with worse outcomes than if they were left alone. Context: This paper sets out the events leading to the establishment of Two Peoples Bay Nature Reserve. Methods: This paper is based on research into literature relating to the Albany region, government files and oral accounts relating to the area. Key results: Long known to the Noongar peoples, Two Peoples Bay was first mapped by Europeans in 1791 by Captain George Vancouver. The area was rapidly established as a base for the over-exploitation of natural resources. As the region became more developed and human population increased, recreational pressure on the area was such that the Western Australian Government surveyed Two Peoples Bay to establish a townsite. Just before the final surveys for the townsite were completed, the supposedly-extinct noisy scrub-bird (Atrichornis clamosus), was rediscovered there. National and international pressure on the WA Government from the conservation movement resulted in the reversal of the decision to develop a town in the area and led to the establishment of Two Peoples Bay Nature Reserve in 1967. Conclusions: The establishment of Two Peoples Bay Nature Reserve in the face of pressure for the development of a town on the bay, provides an interesting example of the needs of nature conservation over-riding real estate development. Implications: Although nature conservation values rarely stop real estate development, the Two Peoples Bay example demonstrates that nature conservation may prevail over real estate development, in this case involving the rediscovery of a species believed extinct. We describe the events leading to establishment of Two Peoples Bay Nature Reserve. The area was long known to Noongar peoples. Mapping by Europeans in 1791 was followed by sealing and whaling in the 19th century, and after World War II plans were prepared for a townsite. After the discovery of the noisy scrub-bird (Atrichornis clamosus), hitherto believed extinct for 100 years, plans for the town were cancelled and the Reserve was established in 1967. Despite a relatively broad distribution in Africa, the Spotted Rubber Frog, Phrynomantis affinis, is extremely rarely encountered. Only 18 specimens from 12 localities have been collected with a few additional observations recorded. Virtually nothing of the species' natural history is known. We report or summarise new localities and range extensions of P. affinis in Namibia and Zambia and describe the call for the first time. We also compare its call to that of the sister species, P. bifasciatus, describing this call for the first time and noting a considerable range extension. The calls show several key differences, with P. affinis calls generally having a lower dominant frequency, pulse repetition rate, and number of pulses than P. bifasciatus. The calls of Namibian and Zambian P. affinis also show marked differences. These descriptions add valuable natural history information for both species and will considerably improve the field detection of the enigmatic P. affinis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This document is a compilation of two interviews with Rajendhran Rajakumar, an Assistant Professor at the University of Ottawa, Canada. Rajakumar discusses his interest in science, particularly biology, and how it was influenced by watching Jurassic Park and visiting the American Museum of Natural History. The recent and still controversial claim of phosphine detection in the venusian atmosphere has reignited consideration of whether microbial life might reside in its cloud layers. If microbial life were to exist within Venus' cloud deck, these microorganisms would have to be multi-extremophiles enclosed within the cloud aerosol particles. The most straightforward approach for resolving the question of their existence is to obtain samples of the cloud particles and analyze their interior. While developing technology has made sophisticated in situ analysis possible, more detailed information could be obtained by examining samples with instrumentation in dedicated ground-based facilities. Ultimately, therefore, Venus Cloud-level Sample Return Missions will likely be required to resolve the question of whether living organisms exist in the clouds of Venus. Two multiphase mission concepts are currently under development for combining in situ analyses with a sample return component. The Venus Life Finder architecture proposes collection of cloud particles in a compartment suspended from a balloon that floats for weeks at the desired altitude, while the Novel solUtion for Venus explOration and Lunar Exploitation (NUVOLE) concept involves a glider that cruises within the cloud deck for 1200 km collecting cloud aerosol particles through the key regions of interest. Both architectures propose a rocket-driven ascent with the acquired samples transported to a high venusian orbit as a prelude to returning to Earth or the Moon. Both future conceptual missions with their combined phases will contribute valuable information relative to the habitability of the clouds at Venus, but their fulfillment is decades away. We suggest that, in the meantime, a simplification of a glider cloud-level sample collection scenario could be accomplished in a shorter development time at a lower cost. Even if the cloud particles are not organic and show no evidence of living organisms, they would reveal critical insights about the natural history and evolution of Venus. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Il repose sur le recalage de la scanographie de planification avec les imageries préopératoires pour la remise en place du volume tumoral macroscopique préopératoire et l'utilisation du concept géométrique complété du concept anatomique pour la délinéation des volumes cibles anatomocliniques de la tumeur primitive. In this article, we propose a consensus delineation of postoperative clinical target volumes for the primary tumour in maxillary sinus and nasal cavity cancers. These guidelines are developed based on radioanatomy and the natural history of those cancers. They require the fusion of the planning CT with preoperative imaging for accurate positioning of the initial GTV and the combined use of the geometric and anatomical concepts for the delineation of clinical target volume for the primary tumour. This article does not discuss the indications of external radiotherapy (nor concurrent systemic treatment) but focuses on target volumes when there is an indication for radiotherapy. Decades of empirical research have revealed how the geological history of our planet shaped plant evolution by establishing well‐known patterns (e.g., how mountain uplift resulted in high rates of diversification and replicate radiations in montane plant taxa). This follows a traditional approach where botanical data are interpreted in light of geological events. In this synthesis, I instead describe how by integrating natural history, phylogenetics, and population genetics, botanical research can be applied alongside geology and paleontology to inform our understanding of past geological and climatic processes. This conceptual shift aligns with the goals of the emerging field of geogenomics. In the neotropics, plant geogenomics is a powerful tool for the reciprocal exploration of two long standing questions in biology and geology: how the dynamic landscape of the region came to be and how it shaped the evolution of the richest flora. Current challenges that are specific to analytical approaches for plant geogenomics are discussed. I describe the scale at which various geological questions can be addressed from biological data and what makes some groups of plants excellent model systems for geogenomics research. Although plant geogenomics is discussed with reference to the neotropics, the recommendations given here for approaches to plant geogenomics can and should be expanded to exploring long‐standing questions on how the earth evolved with the use of plant DNA. Objective: Few long‐term studies have examined the life‐time prevalence of comorbid psychiatric conditions in patients with obsessive‐compulsive disorder (OCD). We therefore studied the frequency of comorbid psychiatric disorders, and their relation to onset and prognosis, in patients with OCD who were followed for almost half a century. Methods: During 1947–1953, 285 OCD patients were admitted as inpatients to a university hospital in Gothenburg, Sweden. Among those, 251 (88%) accepted a structured comprehensive psychiatric examination in 1954–1956. In 1989–1993, 176 survivors were eligible and 144 (response rate 82%) were re‐examined. The same psychiatrist performed both examinations. OCD was diagnosed according to the Schneider criteria, and other mental disorders according to DSM‐IV. Mean follow‐up since onset was 47 years. Results: The lifetime frequency of depressive disorders was 84.7% (major depression 43.8%), generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) 71.5%, panic anxiety disorder 47.9%, agoraphobia 52.1%, specific phobias 64.6%, social phobia 47.9%, paranoid conditions 40.3% (29.1% paranoid ideation), psychotic disorders 15.3%, alcohol abuse 13.2% (men 39%, women 3%) and substance abuse 17.4%. Specific phobia most often started before OCD, while depression had a varied onset in relation to OCD. Social phobia, agoraphobia, GAD, alcohol and substance abuse, psychotic disorders and paranoid conditions most often started after OCD. Presence of GAD, psychotic disorder and substance abuse worsened prognosis of OCD. Conclusion: Comorbid psychiatric conditions are common in OCD patients, and have onset throughout the course. OCD signals vulnerability for other psychiatric conditions, which are important to detect in clinical practice as they negatively affect the outcome. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Atrial septal defects (ASDs) are common in neonates. Although past studies suggest ASDs ≥ 3 mm in term neonates (TNs) are less likely to close, there is paucity of data regarding the natural history in preterm neonates (PNs), information that would inform surveillance. We sought to compare spontaneous closure rates and need for intervention for ASDs in TNs/near term (≥ 36 weeks) versus PNs (< 36 weeks). We included all TNs and PNs who underwent echocardiography at ≤ 1 month between 2010 and 2018 in our institution with an ASD ≥ 3 mm, without major congenital heart disease, and with repeat echocardiogram(s). Spontaneous resolution was defined as size diminution to < 3 mm or closure. We included 156 TNs (mean gestational age at birth 38.6 ± 1.4 weeks) and 156 PNs (29.6 ± 3.7 weeks) with a mean age at follow-up of 16 ± 19 and 15 ± 21 months, respectively (p = 0.76). Based on maximum color Doppler diameter, in TNs, ASD resolution occurred in 95% of small (3–5 mm), 87% of moderate (5.1–8 mm), and 60% of large (> 8 mm) defects; whereas, in PNs, resolution occurred in 79% of small, 76% of moderate, and 33% of large ASDs. There was a significant association between size and ASD resolution in TNs (p = 0.003), but not PNs (p = 0.17). Overall, ASD resolution rate was higher in TNs (89%) versus PNs (78%) (p = 0.009), and fewer TNs (1%) compared to PNs (7%) required ASD intervention (p = 0.02). Most ASDs identified in TNs and PNs spontaneously resolve. PNs, however, demonstrate lower ASD resolution and higher intervention rates within all size groups. Southern giant petrels (Macronectes giganteus) are important consumers that range across the oceans throughout the southern hemisphere. In Argentina, previous studies have shown they eat primarily pinnipeds and penguins, which they are assumed to scavenge, although there are occasional anecdotes of them attacking living penguins. Here we describe a predation attempt by a trio of southern giant petrels on a molting adult Magellanic penguin (Spheniscus magellanicus) at the large colony at Punta Tombo, Argentina. We relate giant petrel attendance patterns at the colony to the penguins' phenology, showing how giant petrel numbers rise with the increasing prevalence of vulnerable penguins. We suggest that living penguins—both fledglings and adults—may constitute a more seasonally significant proportion of the giant petrel diet than previously assumed, and their capture may represent a specialized predation technique. The marine animal phylum Placozoa is characterized by a poorly explored cryptic biodiversity combined with very limited knowledge of their ecology. While placozoans are typically found as part of the epibenthos of coastal waters, known placozoan predators, namely small, shell‐less sea slugs belonging to the family Rhodopidae (Mollusca: Gastropoda: Heterobranchia), inhabit the interstitium of seafloor sediment. In order to gain further insights into this predator–prey relationship and to expand our understanding of placozoan ecological niches, we screened publicly available whole‐body metagenomic data from two rhodopid specimens collected from coastal sediments. Our analysis not only revealed the signatures of three previously unknown placozoan lineages in these sea slug samples but also enabled the assembly of three complete and two partial mitochondrial chromosomes belonging to four previously described placozoan genera, substantially extending the picture of placozoan biodiversity. Our findings further refine the molecular phylogeny of the Placozoa, corroborate the recently established taxonomic ranks in this phylum, and provide molecular support that known placozoan clades should be referred to as genera. We finally discuss the main finding of our study – the presence of placozoans in the sea floor sediment interstitium – in the context of their ecological, biological, and natural history implications. Objective: To confirm the identity and assess the prevalence and evolution of the fluid‐filled interhemispheric midline structure, thought to be the cavum veli interpositi (CVI), in fetuses at 11–14 weeks' gestation. Methods: This was a retrospective study of first‐trimester ultrasound scans performed at a single center over 3 months. Inclusion criteria were singleton pregnancies at 11–14 weeks' gestation with known neonatal outcome. Five experts reviewed the images. Mixed‐effects logistic regression and generalized estimating equations (GEE) were conducted to analyze the associations between the presence of the structure and variables including ultrasound approach (transabdominal vs transvaginal), maternal body mass index (BMI), gestational age, fetal crown–rump length (CRL) and biparietal diameter (BPD). Second‐trimester ultrasound scans of the fetal central nervous system at 18–24 weeks' gestation were evaluated for the persistence of the CVI in fetuses in which the structure was observed in the first trimester. Results: Of the 223 cases reviewed, 104 were included, among which the CVI was observed in 25 (24%) cases. There was no statistically significant difference in CVI visualization between transabdominal and transvaginal ultrasound examinations. GEE showed significant associations between the presence of the fetal structure and CRL (odds ratio (OR) per 10‐unit increase, 1.32; P < 0.0001) and BPD (OR per 10‐unit increase, 1.88; P = 0.0011). Maternal BMI and gestational age showed no significant effect on the presence of the CVI. At second‐trimester follow‐up of the 25 fetuses in which the CVI was observed initially, 44% still showed a CVI, 32% exhibited a cavum vergae, 4% had both structures and 20% had neither. Conclusions: Based on its anatomical location and, in some fetuses, its visualization as a distinct entity from the third ventricle, the identity of the interhemispheric midline structure in the suprathalamic region of the fetal brain between 11–14 weeks' gestation was confirmed as the CVI. The CVI and/or cavum vergae persisted into the second trimester in 80% of fetuses identified initially as having a CVI. To develop an updated staging system for long-chain 3-hydroxyacyl coenzyme A dehydrogenase deficiency (LCHADD) chorioretinopathy based on contemporary multimodal imaging and electrophysiology. We evaluated forty cases of patients with genetically confirmed LCHADD or trifunctional protein deficiency (TFPD) enrolled in a prospective natural history study. Wide-field fundus photographs, fundus autofluorescence (FAF), optical coherence tomography (OCT), and full-field electroretinogram (ffERG) were reviewed and graded for severity. Two independent experts first graded fundus photos and electrophysiology to classify the stage of chorioretinopathy based upon an existing published system. With newer imaging modalities and improved electrophysiology, many patients did not fit cleanly into a single traditional staging group. Therefore, we developed a novel staging system that better delineated the progression of LCHADD retinopathy. We maintained the four previous delineated stages but created substages A and B in stages 2 to 3 to achieve better differentiation. Previous staging systems of LCHADD chorioretinopathy relied on only on the assessment of standard 30 to 45-degree fundus photographs, visual acuity, fluorescein angiography (FA), and ffERG. Advances in recordings of ffERG and multimodal imaging with wider fields of view, allow better assessment of retinal changes. Following these advanced assessments, seven patients did not fit neatly into the original classification system and were therefore recategorized under the new proposed system. The new proposed staging system improves the classification of LCHADD chorioretinopathy, with the potential to lead to a deeper understanding of the disease's progression and serve as a more reliable reference point for future therapeutic research.
