Modern literature has always been obsessed by music. It cannot seem to think about itself without obsessing about music. And music has returned the favour. This is a study of vocal expressions in the borderland between speech and song, based on performances from cultural contexts where oral transmission dominates. Approaches drawn from perspectives belonging to both ethnomusicology and linguistics are integrated in the analysis. As the idea of the performance template is employed as an analytical tool, the focus is on those techniques that make performance possible. Popular Music and the Poetics of Self in Fiction explores the various links between the self and popular music in contemporary fiction. In the novels discussed in this volume, musical references go far beyond creating a tapestry of sound, they make literary characters come alive by giving an account of the physiological and psychological effects of their musical experiences and of their ways of life in different (sub)cultural and social groups. This book examines the political resonances of E. M. Forster's representations of music, offering readings of canonical and overlooked works. It reveals music's crucial role in his writing and draws attention to a previously unacknowledged eclecticism and complexity in Forster's ideological outlook. Examining unobtrusive musical allusions in a variety of Forster's writings, this book demonstrates how music provided Forster with a means of reflecting on race and epistemology, material culture and colonialism, literary heritage and national character, hero-worship and war, and gender and professionalism. It unveils how Forster's musical representations are mediated through a matrix of ideas and debates of his time, such as those about evolution, empire, Britain's relationship with the Continent, the rise of fascism, and the emergence of musicology as an academic discipline.

Poetic Song Verse: Blues-Based Popular Music and Poetry invokes and critiques the relationship between blues-based popular music and poetry in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. The volume is anchored in music from the 1960s, when a concentration of artists transformed modes of popular music from entertainment to art-that-entertains. Musician Mike Mattison and literary historian Ernest Suarez synthesize a wide range of writing about blues and rock—biographies, histories, articles in popular magazines, personal reminiscences, and a selective smattering of academic studies—to examine the development of a relatively new literary genre dubbed by the authors as “poetic song verse.” They argue that poetic song verse was nurtured in the fifties and early sixties by the blues and in Beat coffee houses, and matured in the mid-to-late sixties in the art of Bob Dylan, the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, the Doors, Jimi Hendrix, Joni Mitchell, Leonard Cohen, Gil Scott-Heron, Van Morrison, and others who used voice, instrumentation, arrangement, and production to foreground semantically textured, often allusive, and evocative lyrics that resembled and engaged poetry. Este é um livro que se destaca em meio à vasta fortuna crítica dedicada ao grande intelectual vanguardista de São Paulo. Revistando as ideias do autor no campo da música, publicadas entre agosto de 1938 e junho de 1940, esse conjunto de cônicas revela a sintonia fina de Mário com o ambiente musical brasileiro. A obra dá conhecer aos caminhos percorridos pelo seu pensamento nesses anos sombrios de sua vida, marcados por profunda desilusão, após o afastamento do Departamento e Cultura e o naufrágio da candidatura de Armando de Salles Oliveira à presidência do Brasil, culminando com o seu deslocamento para o Rio de Janeiro, obrigado a abandonar a querida Paulicéia desvairada. O modernista percebia, sobretudo, o franco questionamento das suas propostas experimentais movido pelas novas gerações, aos que se somavam as suas amarguras profissionais. Na capital da republica, Mário de Andrade também não encontrou proteção suficiente para diminuir as decepções. A Universidade do Distrito Federal recém-criada, na qual chegou a dirigir o Instituto de Artes, foi abordada pelo Estado Novo; o seu projeto para orientar a política do patrimônio cultural foi bastante alterado; em suma, Mário perdera posição e espaço intelectual, que anteriormente ocupara em São Paulo. A sua frase de 1923 –'sou lobo sem alcateia'– é substituída por atitude amena diante do mundo, quase humilde. Das Buch behandelt literarische Texte, die zur Vertonung für musikalischen Vortrag bestimmt waren. Der erste Hauptteil handelt vom deutschen Singspiel des 18. Jahrhunderts, vor allem in seiner österreichisch-süddeutschen, speziell Wiener, Ausprägung. Das Singspiel wählte höfische und bürgerliche Sujets, aber auch Märchenstoffe, und war für ausgebildete Sänger gedacht. Seinen Höhepunkt fand es in der gemeinsamen Arbeit von Emanuel Schikaneder und Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart an der «Zauberflöte» und in Goethes «Zweiter Zauberflöte». Der zweite Hauptteil behandelt die Operndichtungen, die der Wiener Hugo von Hofmannsthal für den Komponisten Richard Strauss schrieb, besonders die symbolträchtige, vielfach an die «Zauberflöte» anknüpfende Oper «Die Frau ohne Schatten» und «Arabella», das letzte gemeinsame Werk beider Künstler.

All Along Bob Dylan: America and the World offers an important contribution to thinking about the artist and his work. Adding European and non-English speaking contexts to the vibrant field of Dylan studies, the volume covers a wide range of topics and methodologies while dealing with the inherently complex and varied material produced or associated with the iconic artist. The chapters, organized around three broad thematic sections (Geographies, Receptions and Perspectives), address the notions of audience, performance and identity, allowing to map out the structure of feeling and authenticity, both, in the case of the artist and his audience. Taking its cue from the collapse of the so-called high-/ low culture split following from the Nobel Prize, the book explores the argument that Dylan (and all popular music) can be interpreted as literature and offers discussions in the context of literary traditions, or visual culture and music. This contributes to a nuanced and complex portrayal of the seminal cultural phenomenon called Bob Dylan.

Die Grundlage für den vorliegenden Band bilden literaturwissenschaftliche Beiträge, die im Rahmen der Tagung «Dialog der Künste: Literatur und Musik» im März 2017 an der Universität Lodz präsentiert wurden. Der Band folgt dem Konzept von Literatur und Musik als korrespondierende Künste in Anlehnung an Oskar Walzels These von der «wechselseitigen Erhellung der Künste» aus dem Jahr 1917. Diese gründet in Horazʼ Idee von einer heteronomen Natur der Künste und hebt das kreative, dialogische Potenzial des Vergleichs hervor. Durch vielfache Korrespondenzen wird Musik zum Anlass für poetologische bzw. metatextuelle und semantische Reflexion. Die Beiträge befassen sich mit den Wechselverhältnissen zwischen Literatur und Musik, die zum einen die Thematisierung von unterschiedlich funktionalisierten Musik-Zitaten betreffen und zum anderen auch strukturell-rhetorische Analogien erfassen.

Vocal music was at the heart of English Renaissance poetry and drama. Virtuosic actor-singers redefined the theatrical culture of William Shakespeare and his peers. Composers including William Byrd and Henry Lawes shaped the transmission of Renaissance lyric verse. Poets from Philip Sidney to John Milton were fascinated by the disorienting influx of musical performance into their works. Musical performance was a driving force behind the period's theatrical and poetic movements, yet its importance to literary history has long been ignored or effaced. This book reveals the impact of vocalists and composers upon the poetic culture of early modern England by studying the media through which--and by whom--its songs were made. In a literary field that was never confined to writing, media were not limited to material texts. Scott Trudell argues that the media of Renaissance poetry can be conceived as any node of transmission from singer's larynx to actor's body. Through his study of song, Trudell outlines a new approach to Renaissance poetry and drama that is grounded not simply in performance history or book history but in a more synthetic media history.

Originally published in 1995, The Music of African American Fiction is a historical analysis of the tradition of representing music in African American fiction. The book examines the impact of evolving musical styles and innovative musicians on black culture as is manifested in the literature. The analysis begins with the slave narratives and the emergence of the first black fiction of the antebellum years and moves through the Reconstruction. This is followed by analyses of definitive fictional representations of African American music from the turn-of-the-century through Harlem Renaissance, the Depression and World War II eras through the 1960s and the Black Arts Movement. The representation of black music shapes a lineage that extends from the initial chronicles written in response to sub-human bondage to the declarations of an autonomous'black aesthetic'and dramatically influences the evolution of an African American literary tradition.

Für die Untersuchung des Verhältnisses von Literatur und Musik im Arbeitsgebiet der Comparative Arts, des Künstevergleiches gibt es keine allgemeine Methodenlehre und selten wird in den speziellen Studien methodologisch reflektiert. Dieses Desiderat zu erfüllen, vermag kein einzelner Band allein aufgrund der vielfältigen Verhältnisse, in denen Literatur und Musik zueinander stehen. Das von Steven Paul Scher schon Ende der sechziger Jahre des letzten Jahrhunderts entwickelte triadische Modell von ‚Literatur in der Musik‘, ‚Musik und Literatur‘ und ‚Musik in der Literatur‘ hat sich durch alle theoretischen Modelle hindurch als grundlegende Typologie erhalten, markiert aber nur das Gerippe eines ästhetisch höchst dynamischen Zusammenspiels der seit den Urzeiten der Poesie miteinander verbundenen Schwesterkünste. Zwischen ihnen entfalten sich intermediale adaptive Prozesse der Emotionalisierung und Semantisierung, die auch an die wissenschaftliche Erforschung hohe interdisziplinäre Ansprüche stellen. Den hieraus resultierenden methodologischen Herausforderungen, die je nach Untersuchungsgegenstand neue Konstellationen eingehen, stellen sich die Autorinnen und Autoren der hier vorgelegten Studien.

‘Imagined Sound'is a unique cartography of the artistic, historical and political forces that have informed the post-World War II representation of Australian landscapes. It is the first book to formulate the unique methodology of ‘imagined sound', a new way to read and listen to literature and music that moves beyond the dominance of the visual, the colonial mode of knowing, controlling and imagining Australian space. Emphasising sound and listening, this approach draws out and re-examines the key narratives that shape and are shaped by Australian landscapes and histories, stories of first contact, frontier violence, the explorer journey, the convict experience, non-Indigenous belonging, Pacific identity and contemporary Indigenous Dreaming. ‘Imagined Sound'offers a compelling analysis of how these narratives are reharmonised in key works of literature and music. To listen to and read imagined sound is to examine how works of literature and music evoke and critique landscapes and histories using sound. It is imagined sound because it is created by descriptive language and imaginative thought, and is as such an extension of the range of heard sound. The concept is inspired by Benedict Anderson's key study of nationalism, ‘Imagined Communities'(1983). Discussing official (and unofficial) national anthems, Anderson argues the imagined sound of these songs connects us all. This conception of sound operates in two ways: it places the listener within ‘the nation'and it bypasses the problem of both space and time, enabling listeners from across a vast space to, simultaneously, become one. Following Anderson, imagined sound emphasises the importance of the imagination in the formation of landscapes and communities, and in the telling and retelling of histories.'Imagined Sound'encounters the different forms and tonalities of imagined sound – the soundscape, refrain, song, lyric, scream, voice and noise ¬– in novels, poems, art music, folk, rock, jazz and a film clip. To listen to these imagined sounds is to encounter the diverse ways that writers and musicians have reimagined and remapped Australian colonial/postcolonial histories, landscapes and mythologies. Imagined sound links the past to the present, enabling colonial landscapes and traumas to haunt the postcolonial; it carries and expresses highly personal and interior experiences and emotions; and it links people to the landscapes they inhabit and to the narratives and myths that give place meaning. As a reading and listening practice imagined sound pursues the unresolved conflicts that echo across the haunted soundscapes connecting the colonial past to the postcolonial present. The seeds of regeneration also bear fruit as writers and musicians imagine the future. ‘Imagined Sound'fuses the spirit of close reading common to literary studies and the score analysis familiar to musicology with ideas from sound studies, philosophy, Island studies and postcolonial studies.

Das Buch ist das Ergebnis eines am Germanistischen Institut der Universität Warschau durchgeführten Projekts zu den Beziehungen von Literatur und Musik als Fragestellung einer modernen, komparatistisch orientierten Forschung. Das Ziel dieses Vorhabens war es, das vielschichtige, facettenreiche und wissenschaftlich ergiebige Forschungsfeld exemplarisch zu beleuchten und in seinem thematischen wie methodologischen Reichtum einzufangen. Zur Mitarbeit wurden Forscher aus Deutschland, Polen und der Schweiz eingeladen, die aus unterschiedlichen Perspektiven auf die Korrespondenz der Künste blicken und somit voneinander divergierende Zugänge zu dieser Problematik anbieten. Das Werk dokumentiert ihre wissenschaftlichen Interessengebiete, ohne dabei Anspruch auf Vollständigkeit zu erheben.

This first book-length study of D. H. Lawrence's lifelong engagement with music surveys his extensive musical interests and how these permeate his writing, while also situating Lawrence within a growing body of work on music and modernism. A twin focus considers the music that shaped Lawrence's novels and poetry, as well as contemporary developments in music that parallel his quest for new forms of expression. Comparisons are made with the music of Debussy, Schoenberg, Stravinsky, Wagner, and British composers, including Bax, Holst and Vaughan Williams, and with the musical writings of Forster, Hardy, Hueffer (Ford), Nietzsche and Pound. Above all, by exploring Lawrence and music in historical context, this study aims to open up new areas for study and a place for Lawrence within the field of music and modernism.

This book represents an attempt to capture different links between modern literature and music. The author examines strict intertextual correlations, the phenomena of musicality and musicality of literary works, the musical structure in literature, so-called musical literary texts. He focuses on the novel Le Cœur absolu by Philippe Sollers, the poem Todesfuge by Paul Celan, the Preludio e Fughe by Umberto Saba and the drama Judasz z Kariothu [Judas Iscariot] by Karol Hubert Rostworowski. The analysis also includes Stanisław Barańczak's cycle of poems Podróż zimowa: Wiersze do muzyki Franza Schuberta [Winter Journey: Poems to the Music of Franz Schubert] and a fragment of Scène from Hérodiade by Stéphane Mallarmé in Paul Hindemith's composition «Hérodiade» de Stéphane Mallarmé.

Rock and Romanticism: Blake, Wordsworth, and Rock from Dylan to U2 is an edited anthology that seeks to explain just how rock and roll is a Romantic phenomenon that sheds light, retrospectively, on what literary Romanticism was at its different points of origin and on what it has become in the present. This anthology allows Byron and Wollstonecraft to speak back to contemporary theories of Romanticism through Bob Dylan and the Rolling Stones. Relying on Löwy and Sayre's Romanticism Against the Tide of Modernity, it explores how hostility, loss, and longing for unity are particularly appropriate terms for classic rock as well as the origins of these emotions. In essays ranging from Bob Dylan to Blackberry Smoke, this work examines how rock and roll expands, interprets, restates, interrogates, and conflicts with literary Romanticism, all the while understanding that as a term “rock and roll” in reference to popular music from the late 1940s through the early 2000s is every bit as contradictory and difficult to define as the word Romanticism itself.

The essays collected in this volume explore the ways in which hybridity functions in a wide variety of visual, musical, and written texts from France, the Francophone world, and beyond. Hybridity is defined here as an unexpected interaction or combination between two or more forms--whether literary, filmic, ethnic, generic or gendered. The volume covers works ranging from the 16th to the 20th centuries, from Pierre de Ronsard to Woody Allen. The essays demonstrate that rather than being a uniquely postmodern or postcolonial phenomenon, hybridity may be integral to creativity itself, leading to the conclusion that hybrid forms tend to challenge authority by proposing alternatives to existing power structures or questioning conventional ways of thinking and viewing the world.

Dealing with the interconnections between music and the written word, this volume brings into focus an updated range of analytical and interpretative approaches which transcend the domain of formalist paradigms and the purist assumption of music's non-referentiality. Grouped into three thematic sections, these fifteen essays by Italian, British and American scholars shed light on a phenomenological network embracing different historical, socio-cultural and genre contexts and a variety of theoretical concepts, such as intermediality, the soundscape notion, and musicalisation. A critical analysis of the poetic representations and legacies of five landmark blues artists The Blues Muse: Race, Gender, and Musical Celebrity in American Poetry focuses on five key blues musicians and singers—Gertrude “Ma” Rainey, Bessie Smith, Billie Holiday, Robert Johnson, and Lead Belly—and traces the ways in which these artists and their personas have been invoked and developed throughout American poetry.
