Abstract

We report the structural changes inside germania glass induced by femtosecond laser pulses. Inspection by polarization microscopy and secondary electron microscopy indicate that the periodic nanostructures consist of oxygen defects such as ODCs (oxygen deficient centers) and NBOHCs (nonbridging oxygen hole centers) for laser pulse energy less than 0.2 μJ. However, the glass network was dissociated and O2 molecules were generated for laser pulse energy greater than 0.4 μJ. Two different structural changes, form-birefringence and dissociation, were induced in GeO2 glass, depending on the laser pulse energy. The form-birefringence exhibited by the nanogratings in GeO2 glass is larger than that in SiO2 glass for pulse energy less than 0.2 μJ, as the density of nanovoids enclosed by ODCs in GeO2 glass is higher than that in SiO2 glass. Arrhenius plots of the phase retardation caused by the nanogratings in GeO2 and SiO2 indicate that the oxygen defects are relaxed at a temperature 100°C above the glass-transition temperature. 93. Dynamic Postural Balance: Neck Motion and Center of Foot Pressure.

Abstract

Objective: To study neck proprioceptors for dynamic postural balance, head motion and center of foot pressure (COP) were recorded simultaneously during the motion of head or chest. Materials and Methods: Seven volunteers with no neurological diseases participated in this study. Head motion was monitored with accelerometers and autogyros on the head, and COP was monitored on a force platform. The subject was standing upright on the platform with eyes immobilized and the subject was asked to rotate the only head alternatively repetitively or to rotate the chest and head synchronized. Both the motions were asked to rotate at own pace, quick pace, slow pace, and 0.5 Hz pace for 20 sec, respectively. Results: The frequency of the motion with the head only showed higher than that of the motion with the chest and head synchronized (P < 0.0001), and the frequency was significant among pacing (P < 0.000 1). The wave powers of the head motion during the motion with the head only were larger than those with the chest and head synchronized (P = 0.0011). The wave powers of COP oscillation during the motion with the chest and head synchronized were larger than those during the motion with the head only (P = 0.0027). The cross powers during the motion with the chest and head synchronized were larger than those with the head only, between the head motion and COP oscillation (P = 0.0154). Conclusion: Neck motion is important to stabilize postural balance on turning around, neck motion might provide us much information for dynamic examination of COP. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

94. Postural Balance and Dementias.

Abstract

Objective: To study dementing diseases, postural balance was studied on static posture and dynamic posture. Design: Patients with dementing diseases and healthy controls were tested in measuring the center of fool pressure (COP) during standing upright and during standing with knees motion. Materials and Methods: Thirty-one patients and age-matched 23 controls participated in this study. The patients, aged 50-90 years, consulted us with a chief complaint of memory disturbance, and they got scores below 25 with a questionnaire of the revised version of Hasegawa's Dementia Scale. They were asked to stand still upright on a force platform, keep knees flexed about 90 degrees, and keep knees extended, for 5 sec respectively. Maximal shift of COP, total power of oscillation of COP, and maximal diagonal by boxing the track of COP were discussed. Results: The analysis of variance showed differences significant between the patients and the controls (P < 0.0004), between the shift and the power (P < 0.0001), between the power and the diagonal (P < 0.0001), between standing upright and keeping knees flexed (P < 0.0001), and between standing upright and keeping knees extended (P < 0.0001). Regression analysis showed the predictive equation; [Shift = 0.03 • Age + 7.9, multiple coefficient correlation: 0.07) for the shift on standing upright by the patients, (Shift = 0.2 - Age-2.3, multiple coefficient correlation: 0.68] for the shift on standing upright by the controls, [Shift = 12.9 • Age + 13.0, multiple coefficient correlation: 0.06) for the power on standing upright by the patients, [Shift = 61.0 • Age- 2015.8, multiple coefficient correlation: 0.54] for the power on standing upright by the controls, [Shift = 2.3 • Age + 226.0, multiple coefficient correlation: 0.08] for the diagonal on standing upright by the patients, [Shift = 7.8 • Age-173.1, multiple coefficient correlation: 0.51] for the diagonal on standing upright by the controls. Conclusion: The patients with memory disturbance showed postural balance deteriorated. On static balance, the shift, power, diagonal increased with aging. Abstract

Objective: To study dynamic postural balance on aging, center of foot pressure was studied during standing upright and knees-motion for 407 volunteers. Design: They were asked to stand upright and knees-motion, and static and dynamic postural balances were measured for them. Materials and Methods: The 407 volunteers, aged from 14 to 93 years, were asked to stand upright on a force platform with eyes open for 20 sec and to stand upright with eye closed for 20 sec, then, they were asked their eyes opened and keep their knees flexed for 5 sec and keep their knees extended for 5 sec. Sum of the squired maximal lateral drift and maximal anterior-posterior drift, total power with the Feurier transform, and trajectory path length were obtained for static and dynamic standing for discussion, respectively. Results: The drifts in the horizontal plane showed significantly increased with aging on standing upright with eyes open and with eyes closed, but no increase with aging on knees-motion. The drifts in the vertical direction showed decreased on knees-motion. The total powers increased with aging for static balance but decreased for dynamic balance. The trajectory path length increased with aging for both static and dynamic balances Conclusion: Postural balance deteriorates with aging. 97. A Nanoparticle-Based Ratiometric and Self-Calibrated Fluorescent Thermometer for Single Living Cells

Abstract

The homeostasis of body temperature and energy balance is one of the major principles in biology. Nanoscale thermometry of aqueous solutions is a challenging but crucial technique to understand the molecular basis of this essential process. Here, we developed a ratiometric nanothermometer (RNT) for intracellular temperature measurement in real time. Both the thermosensitive fluorophore, β-diketonate chelate europium(III) thenoyltrifluoroacetonate, and the thermoinsensitive fluorophore, rhodamine 101, which was used as a self-reference, are embedded in a polymeric particle that protects the fluorophores from intracellular conditions. The ratiometric measurement of single RNT spots is independent of the displacement of the RNT along the z-axis. The temperature is therefore determined at the location of each RNT under an optical microscope regardless of the dynamic movement of living cells. As a demonstration of the spot-by-spot intracellular thermometry, we successfully followed the temperature change in individual RNT spots in a single cell together with the Ca2+burst induced by the Ca2+ionophore ionomycin. The temperature increases differently among different spots, implying heterogeneous heat production in the cell. We then show that, in some spots, the temperature gradually decreases, while in others it remains high. The average temperature elevation within a cell is positively correlated to the increase in Ca2+, suggesting that the activity and/or number of heat sources are dependent on the Ca2+concentration.
