Abstract

Due to the present shortage of ³He and the associated tremendous increase of its price, the supply of large neutron detection systems with ³He becomes unaffordable. Alternative neutron detection concepts, therefore, have been invented based on solid 10B converters. These concepts require development in thin film deposition technique regarding high adhesion, thickness uniformity and chemical purity of the converter coating on large area substrates. We report on the sputter deposition of highly uniform large-area 10B4C coatings of up to 2 µm thickness with a thickness deviation below 4% using the Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht large area sputtering system. The 10B4C coatings are x-ray amorphous and highly adhesive to the substrate. Material analysis by means of X-ray-Photoelectron Spectroscopy, Secondary-Ion-Mass-Spectrometry, and Rutherford- Back-Scattering (RBS) revealed low impurities concentration in the coatings. The isotope composition determined by Secondary-Ion-Mass-Spectrometry, RBS, and inelastic nuclear reaction analysis of the converter coatings evidences almost identical 10B isotope contents in the sputter target and in the deposited coating. Neutron conversion and detection test measurements with variable irradiation geometry of the converter coating demonstrate an average relative quantum efficiency ranging from 65% to 90% for cold neutrons as compared to a black ³He-monitor. Thus, these converter coatings contribute to the development of ³He-free prototype detectors based on neutron grazing incidence. Transferring the developed coating process to an industrial scale sputtering system can make alternative ³He-free converter elements available for large area neutron detection systems. Abstract

A facile and efficient route is developed to improve the power conversion efficiency of poly(3-hexylthiophene-2,5-diyl):[6, 6]-phenyl-C61 butyric acid methyl ester (P3HT:PCBM) solar cells by processing solvent additive 1,8-octanedithiol (ODT) in the bulk heterojunction systems. The influence of ODT on polymer surface and inner morphology, crystallinity, and quantitative molecular miscibility of P3HT and PCBM is studied. The results show that ODT enhances the phase separation of P3HT and PCBM and the P3HT crystallinity, increases the solubility of PCBM in P3HT, and reduces the size of amorphous P3HT domains. A high concentration of ODT induces the formation of a PCBM enrichment surface layer, which is beneficial for the device performance.

Abstract

This paper presents a study of different configurations of permanent magnets' to maximize microspeakers' electroacoustic performances. The proposed theoretical approach is based on an analytical model allowing the calculation of the magnetic field created by cylindrical and ringshaped permanent magnet, making thus possible to analyze different magnetic structures. Several combinations of cylindrical and rings were analyzed in view of maximizing the magnetic field in the vicinity of the voice coil. Taking into account the whole electro-mechano-acoustic behavior of the microspeaker, we present two optimized magnets configurations which increase the efficiency by factors between 2.7 and 5 comparing to previously optimized microspeakers. Moreover, we show that it is possible to get devices twice smaller with efficiencies increased by factors between 1.2 and 3.4. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

This paper proposes a modified analytic formulation of iron losses based on the model of Bertotti. Two measurements allow to define the constant parameters of the model. A specific expression of the flux density takes into account the skin effect. We have tested the validity of our model on two materials (low carbon steel and NO (non oriented) SiFe). The dynamic behavior of our model is in better agreement with the measurements than the original model of Bertotti. Furthermore, we have tested the evolution of the parameters in case of magnetomechanical coupling. Index Terms--Iron losses, Bertotti's model, skin effect.

RESUMO Avaliar a influência do espaçamento, irrigação e idade, na produção de madeira, na densidade básica, nas características anatômicas e químicas da madeira de dois clones do híbrido Eucalyptus grandis x Eucalyptus urophylla com idades de seis e 12 meses provenientes de duas regiões, uma irrigada e outra não irrigada, com espaçamentos de 3x0,5; 1,5x2, 3x1; 3x2 e 3x3 m. Foi possível verificar a influência do espaçamento, irrigação e idade nas propriedades da madeira nos clones estudados. O maior volume de madeira foi obtido no clone B com 12 meses na região irrigada e nos espaçamentos adensados. Os maiores valores de densidade foram encontrados no clone A nos espaçamentos amplos, a menor frequência de vaso e os maiores comprimentos de fibra ocorreram nos clones com 12 meses nos menores espaçamentos na região irrigada. Maior espessura da parede foi encontrada no clone A com seis meses na região não irrigada. Maior teor de lignina foi obtido no clone B com 12 meses na região irrigada nos maiores espaçamentos, e o teor de cinzas foi menor no clone A com 12 meses na região não irrigada nos espaçamentos mais amplos. Abstract

International audience; A method for optimizing the planar microcoil of MEMS electrodynamic microspeakers with the aim of maximizing the electroacoustic efficiency is presented. The poposed approach is based on a mixed-model using both analytical models and finite element method (FEM). FEM simulation was used for computing the spatial distribution of the magnetic field created by the permanent magnets, making thus possible to analyze any geometry of permanent magnets. Different configurations of magnets were considered, and for each the planar copper microcoil was optimized while taking into account the technological constraints due to the microfabrication process, the associated electronics and the targeted acoustic power emission. The results showed that the proposed method predicts the force factor in very good agreement with experimental measurements carried out on the micromachined device. Morover, according to the electro-mechano-acoustic model, these results showed that the optimized microcoil associated to the best magnet configuration increases the electroacoustic efficiency by more than 200% compared to conventional microspeakers.
