Abstract

Background: Parents of children with chronic health conditions can face many challenges. The Tree of Life narrative therapy group intervention aims to connect parents with their skills and resources before collectively exploring the 'storms' (challenges) they face. A narrative-informed evaluation aimed to story the parents' experiences of attending the group. Methods: Seven parents attended a Tree of Life group intervention and then participated in a narrative-informed group interview to generate stories regarding their experience of the group. The interview was recorded with consent and later transcribed. Results: A thematic analysis was undertaken and highlighted that the group offered parents a 'safe place to stand' to talk about difficulties; a different perspective on their situation; connection with the skills of other parents; new ideas to introduce more independence to their child; and togetherness within the 'storms' (challenges). Conclusions: The narrative-informed evaluation offered opportunities to further thicken parents' preferred identity stories whilst also contributing to the evidence base of narrative-informed group interventions for parents. Abstract

The background to this paper lies in previous British research which evaluated information sharing as a means of crime reduction within the UK East Midlands region. This has been highlighted in papers published in the UK which emphasised that one of the main barriers to successful data sharing to reduce crime was a lack of focus on specific projects and uncertainty within UK Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnerships (CDRPs) surrounding what data should be gathered, from whom that data should come and what could ultimately be achieved with that data. It further highlighted that a problem solving approach should be adopted with the emphasis on the collection and analysis of data being driven on a problem solving basis rather than a what is available basis. In order to assist UK CDRPs to identify problems which could be solved using this technique, the research recommended that the regional Home Office based in Nottingham (UK) carry out a pilot project to demonstrate how this could be achieved. Since Nottingham had the highest level of domestic burglary in England and Wales, and given that this had also been identified as a national crime target it was suggested that such a pilot should be carried out in relation to domestic burglary within two residential areas in Nottingham City. This paper reports on the findings of that project which for the first time brings together analysis of both victim and locational risk factors to produce one risk index for tackling residential domestic burglary.
