53. Modeling self-aggregation of stochastic particles: A Γ-convergence approach.

Abstract

In this work, we demonstrate that a functional modeling the self-aggregation of stochastically distributed lipid molecules can be obtained as the Γ -limit of a family of discrete energies driven by a sequence of independent and identically distributed random variables. These random variables are intended to describe the asymptotic behavior of lipid molecules that satisfy an incompressibility condition. The discrete energy keeps into account the interactions between particles. We resort to transportation maps to compare functionals defined on discrete and continuous domains, and we prove that, under suitable conditions on the scaling of these maps as the number of random variables increases, the limit functional features an interfacial term with a Wasserstein-type penalization. Abstract

The goal of this paper is the analytical validation of a model of Cermelli and Gurtin for an evolution law for systems of screw dislocations under the assumption of antiplane shear. The motion of the dislocations is restricted to a discrete set of glide directions, which are properties of the material. The evolution law is given by a "maximal dissipation criterion", leading to a system of differential inclusions. We present a variational framework for studying screw dislocations subject to antiplane shear. Using a classical model developed by Cermelli and Gurtin, methods of Calculus of Variations are exploited to prove existence of solutions, and to derive a useful expression of the Peach-K\"ohler forces acting on a system of dislocation. Abstract

In this paper we study a mathematical model of one-dimensional swimmers performing a planar motion while fully immersed in a viscous fluid. The swimmers are assumed to be of small size, and all inertial effects are neglected. Hydrodynamic interactions are treated in a simplified way, using the local drag approximation of resistive force theory. We prove existence and uniqueness of the solution of the equations of motion driven by shape changes of the swimmer. Moreover, we prove a controllability result showing that given any pair of initial and final states, there exists a history of shape changes such that the resulting motion takes the swimmer from the initial to the final state. We give a constructive proof, based on the composition of elementary maneuvers (straightening and its inverse, rotation, translation), each of which represents the solution of an interesting motion planning problem. Finally, we prove the existence of solutions for the optimal control problem of finding, among the histories of shape changes taking the swimmer from an initial to a final state, the one of minimal energetic cost., Comment: 25 pages, 11 figures

Abstract

We consider a Canham-Helfrich-type variational problem defined over closed surfaces enclosing a fixed volume and having fixed surface area. The problem models the shape of multiphase biomembranes. It consists of minimizing the sum of the Canham-Helfrich energy, in which the bending rigidities and spontaneous curvatures are now phase-dependent, and a line tension penalization for the phase interfaces. By restricting attention to axisymmetric surfaces and phase distributions, we extend our previous results for a single phase (arXiv:1202.1979) and prove existence of a global minimizer., Comment: 20 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

The San Vincenzo coastal area (Livorno, Tuscany – Italy) morpho sedimentological map represents a quantitative research on assessing and manage coastal erosion risk, through the computation of sedimentary stock. The presented method links the geomorphic mapping guidelines, issued in 2017 by Regione Toscana, and the Italian Geo thematic cartography procedures (CARG). To integrate the different features and procedures provides an exhaustive overview on the main coastal processes at San Vincenzo. It highlights a lack on the sampling locations, especially near the sedimentary discharge sites, as well as at a basin scale, to deeper investigate sediment supply processes. Moreover, the geodatabase allows us to analyze the anthropogenic impact on the coastal dynamics and the resilience potential as a PhD project

Abstract

[EN] In the procedures regarding built heritage documentation, the process of representing the object in a digital environment is characterized by a high level of complexity. In fact, the need to process heterogeneous information, referring to quantity, quality and format is one of the main emerging issues. Recent technologies of digitization of our built environment offer excellent performances on data reliability and time of acquisition. On the other hand, they bring about new challenges regarding how to define methodologies and strategies to effectively elaborate such information. A possible way to optimize the use of these data is by implementing them into informative systems: these tools have great potential in the creation of multi-layered representations and offer extensive possibilities for interpretations and analyses. This research, carried out by the laboratories DAdaLab and PLAY of the University of Pavia, focuses on the University’s Palazzo Centrale and aims at developing a precise methodological approach: starting from the 3D acquisition, the survey data are discretized – through critical processes of semantic analysis and breakdown – and later implemented into informative databases. Moreover, the architectural characters, construction phases and the strong bond with the urban setting make the case study particularly valuable; therefore, it represents an excellent opportunity to point out the potentials of this approach to the definition of management tools for the conservation of built heritage.

Abstract

The contribution analyses the themes related to the concept of resilience, as an indispensable premise for a conscious intervention of reuse, conservation and enhancement. The cultural heritage is analysed in relation to three main factors: the environmental context, its knowledge and the users’ needs. The essay proposes a first methodological interpretation, apt to define some synthetic indicators through which evaluate the degree of accessibility, transformability and adaptability of the heritage, for its sustainable reuse. 87. Upscaling and spatial localization of non-local energies with applications to crystal plasticity.

Abstract

We describe multiscale geometrical changes via structured deformations (g , G) and the non-local energetic response at a point x via a function Ψ of the weighted averages of the jumps [ u n ] (y) of microlevel deformations u n at points y within a distance r of x. The deformations u n are chosen so that lim n → ∞ u n = g and lim n → ∞ ∇ u n = G. We provide conditions on Ψ under which the upscaling " n → ∞ " results in a macroscale energy that depends through Ψ on (1) the jumps [ g ] of g and the "disarrangement field" ∇ g − G , (2) the "horizon" r, and (3) the weighting function α r for microlevel averaging of [ u n ] (y). We also study the upscaling " n → ∞ " followed by spatial localization " r → 0 " and show that this succession of processes results in a purely local macroscale energy I (g , G) that depends through Ψ upon the jumps [ g ] of g and the "disarrangement field" ∇ g − G alone. In special settings, such macroscale energies I (g , G) have been shown to support the phenomena of yielding and hysteresis, and our results provide a broader setting for studying such yielding and hysteresis. 88. Properties of screw dislocation dynamics : time estimates on boundary and interior collisions

Abstract

In this paper, the dynamics of a system of a finite number of screw dislocations is studied. Under the assumption of antiplane linear elasticity, the two-dimensional dynamics is determined by the renormalized energy. The interaction of one dislocation with the boundary and of two dislocations of opposite Burgers moduli are analyzed in detail, and estimates on the collision times are obtained. Additionally, we obtain sufficient conditions that can be used to guarantee that the first collision to occur will be between a specific dislocation and the boundary, or between a specific pair of dislocations. Some exactly solvable cases and numerical simulations show agreement with the estimates obtained.

Uno dei terreni sul quale si gioca la prospettiva del recupero sostenibile del patrimonio costruito è oggi costituito dalla valorizzazione del patrimonio stesso. Né un approccio intransigentemente refrattario alle istanze di riuso del bene, né quello opposto, orientato al contrario al suo sfruttamento economico, a carico di una troppo gravosa compressione delle stesse esigenze di conservazione, appaiono di fatto perseguibili in una prospettiva di medio periodo. A partire dagli esiti di una ricerca recentemente conclusa, si intende affrontare la questione con una prospettiva organica, in una logica “life cycle oriented”., One of most relevant playground of the debate concerning the sustainable refurbishment of cultural heritage is focused on its valorisation.
