Children who accompany their parents or guardians during a period of homelessness make up 37% (more than one in three) of all people accessing the Supported Accommodation Assistance Program (SAAP) services. This paper describes an Australian qualitative study that explored the experiences of children who accompanied their families during periods of homelessness. It focuses particularly on what children and young people say they want from the services that they come in contact with; particularly specialised homelessness services such as housing support services and refuges. Key themes that emerged from the research include: the need for services to engage with children as individuals in their own right, to listen to and acknowledge their stories, to have services that meet their individual needs, to act and respond when children feel unsafe and for workers who can provide support to children to talk to parents about what is going on. Children and young people wanted workers to know that they felt their parents were doing their best to keep them safe. Although children of parents with an alcohol or other drug (AOD) issue appear to assume a range of caring responsibilities within their families they have, until recently, been excluded from the growing body of young-carer research, policy and practice. This is problematic, as this group may experience greater levels of social exclusion whilst experiencing similar negative impacts of care as their caring peers. This paper discusses the findings of an exploratory qualitative research project conducted in Canberra, Australia which attempted to further understand these young people's experiences and to consider how they might best be supported. The paper challenges the way that young caring has been conceptualised and suggests that unless a number of conceptual, structural and organisational changes are made, young people caring for a parent with an AOD issue may remain relatively unsupported. We measured changes in carbon (C), nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) concentrations and mass of 10 foliar litters decomposing over 12 years at 21 sites across Canada, ranging from subarctic to temperate, to evaluate the influence of litter quality (nature) and forest floor (nurture) on N and P dynamics. Most litters lost P faster than N, relative to C, except in one litter which had a high initial C:P quotient (2,122). Net N loss occurred at mass C:N quotients of between 33 and 68, positively correlated with the C:N quotient in the original litter, and net P loss likely occurred at C:P quotients between 800 and 1,200. Forest floor properties also influenced N and P dynamics: the higher the C:N or C:P quotient in the surface soil organic matter, the smaller the proportion of initial N or P left in the decomposing litter, relative to C. There was a convergence of C:N and C:P quotients as the litters decomposed, with an overall mass ratio of 427:17:1 when the litters reached 20% original C remaining. These results, covering a wide range of sites and litters and thus decomposition rates, showed that the C:N:P quotients followed similar trajectories and converged as the litters decomposed. The relative loss of N and P was affected by both the initial litter nutrient concentration and the chemistry of the site forest floor, with the former being more important than the latter, resulting in spatial variations in nutrient content of the forest floor. Fine root production and its relationships to aboveground plant components and environmental drivers such as water table have been poorly quantified in peatland ecosystems, despite being the primary input of labile carbon to peat soils. We studied the relationship between fine root (< 1 mm) production, aboveground biomass and growing season water table within an ombrotrophic peatland in eastern Ontario. We installed 80 in-growth bags (10 cm diameter) to measure fine root production over the full range of 40 cm in water table depth. The point-intersect method was used to estimate peak aboveground biomass components (total, leaf and stem) for the 0.36 m area surrounding each in-growth bag. Mean fine root production was 108 ± 71 g m y and was strongly related to both aboveground biomass and water table. Linear regression analysis showed strong allometric relationships between fine root production and aboveground biomass for shrubs ( r = 0.61, p < 0.001), suggesting that fine root production estimates can be approximated using aboveground biomass data. Water table had a significant effect on the allocation of biomass to fine roots, leaves and stems with a deeper water table significantly increasing both fine root production at depth and at each depth increment. Shrub biomass allocation to leaves and stems similarly shifted, with greater investment in stems relative to leaves with a deeper water table. As a result, greater fine root biomass was produced per unit leaf biomass in areas with a deeper water table, illustrating an important tradeoff between leaf and fine root tissues in drier conditions. Our results indicate that any drop in water table will likely increase aboveground biomass stocks and the influx of labile carbon to peat soils via fine roots and leaves. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Theoretical accounts of autism have hypothesized links between arousal and behavior, but research translations of theory to real-world contexts have been limited. In this single-subject experimental analysis, a school-age subject chose between high and low arousing activities with real-time monitoring of behavior and heart rate (HR). Time series statistical analysis showed significant changes in HR associated with activity type and no association with motor movement. Sequential analysis showed that activity choice and HR were significantly associated (i.e., activity choice sequentially dependent with the preceding level of HR). Highly arousing activities were more likely to be chosen following high HR and vice versa. Results provide evidence of the feasibility of an integrative biobehavioral approach to understand behavior in neurodevelopmental disorders. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article focuses on the effects of parental alcohol and other drugs on youngsters. As shown in a 2006 Australian study, 13 percent of Australian children were at risk of binge drinking by one adult with whom they are living and two percent with an adult who use cannabis. Children are affected sociologically and psychologically if parents are alcoholic and substance abusers. It can also lead to isolation and stressful environment for them in addition to exposure to criminal activities.

Schools play an important part in the lives of children and young people who have caring responsibilities for a family member with an illness, disability, alcohol or other drug problem or mental health condition but many of these 'young carers' report difficulty in attending, achieving and participating in education. This qualitative research project aimed to gather young carers' views about school, the challenges they face in engaging with education and their peers, and ways that the system might better support others like them. It found that significant caring responsibilities, a lack of appropriate and responsive support services to meet family needs and a lack of awareness and understanding within the education system significantly reduced young carers' capacity to fully engage with their learning. Young carers in the study called for more assistance in caring for their relatives, more flexibility and responsiveness to their home lives within the design and delivery of education, and better processes for identifying and responding to the challenges they encounter in participating in the life of the school community. Abstract: To assess the commercial viability of a coalbed methane prospect two of the key geological parameters measured are gas content (desorbed gas) and gas holding capacity (adsorption capacity). These two measures, together with reservoir pressure, give an estimate of the gas saturation of the reservoir. Typically gas saturation has been assessed by collecting one adsorption isotherm sample and assuming it is representative of the whole seam reservoir conditions. This study addresses that assumption. To understand the level of variation, and thus the inherent uncertainty in saturation, one core (Jasper-1) from the Huntly coalfield in New Zealand was analysed in detail. Ten samples (representing the whole coal seam) were placed into gas desorption canisters and desorbed for ten days and then analysed for adsorption capacity. Desorption analyses for total measured gas content (average in-situ basis) ranged from 2.32 to 2.89 m3/t (standard deviation (sd)=0.18) and gas adsorptive capacity at 4 MPa (average in-situ basis) from 2.11 to 3.51 m3/t (sd=0.38) resulting in saturations ranging from 66% to 120% (sd=15). Determination of how many samples are required to make a realistic assessment of average reservoir properties requires a consideration of: (i) the level of accuracy desired, (ii) the limit of accuracy possible, which is governed by the magnitude of experimental error, and (iii) the innate variability of the seam. It was found that a minimum of five samples each for adsorption and desorption were required in order to significantly decrease the uncertainty in gas saturation estimates for a subbituminous coal. Abstract: The Huntly coalfield has significant coal deposits that contain biogenically-sourced methane. The coals are subbituminous in rank and Eocene in age and have been previously characterised with relatively low to moderate measured gas (CH4) contents (2–4 m3/ton). The CO2 holding capacity is relatively high (18.0 m3/ton) compared with that of CH4 (2.6 m3/ton) and N2 (0.7 m3/ton) at the same pressure (4 MPa; all as received basis). The geothermal gradient is also quite high at 55 °C/km. A study has been conducted which simulates enhancement of methane recovery (ECBM) from these deposits using a new version of the TOUGH2 (version 2) reservoir simulator (ECBM-TOUGH2) that can handle non-isothermal, multi-phase flows of mixtures of water, CH4, CO2 and N2. The initial phase of the simulation is CH4 production for the first 5 years of the field history. The model indicates that methane production can be significantly improved (from less than 80% recovery to nearly 90%) through injection of CO2. However, although an increase in the rate of CO2 injection increases the amount of CO2 sequestered, the methane recovery (because of earlier breakthrough with increasing injection rate) decreases. Modeling of pure N2 injection produced little enhanced CH4 production. The injection of a hypothetical flue gas mixture (CO2 and N2) also produced little increase in CH4 production. This is related to the low adsorption capacity of the Huntly coal to N2 which results in almost instantaneous breakthrough into the production well. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Transparent, objective, and repeatable resource assessments should be the goal of companies, investors, and regulators. Different types of resources, however, may require different approaches for their quantification. In particular, coal can be treated both as a solid resource (and thus be mined) as well as a reservoir for gas (which is extracted). In coal mining, investment decisions are made based on a high level of data and establishment of seam continuity and character. The Australasian Code for Reporting of Exploration Results, Mineral Resources and Ore Reserves (the JORC Code) allows deposits to be characterised based on the level of geological and commercial certainty. Similarly, the guidelines of the Petroleum Resource Management System (PRMS) can be applied to coal seam gas (CSG) deposits to define the uncertainty and chance of commercialisation. Although coal and CSG represent two very different states of resources (i.e., solid vs. gaseous), their categorisation in the JORC Code and PRMS is remarkably similar at a high level. Both classifications have two major divisions: resource vs. reserve. Generally, in either system, resources are considered to have potential for eventual commercial production, but this has not yet been confirmed. Reserves in either system are considered commercial, but uncertainty is still denoted through different subdivisions. Other classification systems that can be applied to CSG also exist, for example the Canadian Oil and Gas Evaluation Handbook (COGEH) and the Chinese Standard (DZ/T 0216-2020) and both have similar high-level divisions to the JORC Code and PRMS. A hypothetical case study of a single area using the JORC Code to classify the coal and PRMS for the gas showed that the two methodologies will have overlapping, though not necessarily aligned, resource and reserve categories. Abstract: Secondary biogenic gas content can be related to textural characteristics in Eocene age subbituminous coals from the Huntly coalfield, New Zealand. However, the relationships between the two major coal seams in the basin are considerably different despite their close stratigraphic proximity (less than 25 m). In this study, 163 coal samples were collected and desorbed from eight drill holes. Gas adsorption capacity and proximate analyses were conducted as well as macroscopic logging for coal type and vitrain banding characteristics. Vitrain bands were quantitatively point counted and the longest dimension of the shortest axis measured. Three coal types were recognized: bright luster non-banded, bright moderately banded and bright highly banded. Vitrain band thickness, converted to the phi (−log2) scale, was found to increase across the coal types with the thickest bands being associated with the most banded coal type. Overall, when normalized by seam and location, the dataset reveals a relationship between coal type and gas content with the non-banded coal type having the highest gas contents and conversely, the coal types with the most vitrain bands having the lowest gas contents. However, when the seams are considered separately, it can be seen that in the stratigraphically higher Renown coal seam, gas has an indirect association with increasing band thickness, in agreement with the overall trend, while the stratigraphically lower Kupakupa coal seam appears to have a direct relationship. Interestingly the Renown seam, which has a greater percentage of non-banded material, generally has a greater methane adsorption capacity as well as a greater gas content compared to the Kupakupa seam. It is believed these differences are related to macroscopic texture and that the differing proportions of the coal types between the two seams has a fundamental effect on microporosity, ultimately controlling the available surface area for gas adsorption. Abstract: Samples of subbituminous coal from the Huntly Coalfield, New Zealand, were analyzed for methane adsorption at a variety of moisture contents and temperatures. Density and moisture determinations as part of the procedure were used to experimentally confirm that the packing density of water adsorbed to the coal''s surface is equivalent to that of normal liquid water. Moisture content was found to be critical in evaluating the storage capacity of these coals. Low moisture was associated with elevated adsorption isotherms. The relationship between moisture content and gas adsorption is non-linear. Temperature over the range we tested was found to play only a small role in storage capacity for this coal. A series of algorithms were developed to correct for moisture and temperature variations between samples. Testing of the algorithms by using an additional sample indicated that they are close to predicting experimental data but that the constants still require further refinement. These algorithms only apply to this coalfield and are not intended to be widely applied. In addition, it was found that methane adsorption isotherms determined on samples collected after desorption were elevated in comparison to those determined on samples which were collected immediately after drilling. Abstract: Four coal cores, one from the Huntly (Eocene), two from the Ohai (Cretaceous) and one from the Greymouth (Cretaceous) coalfields, were sampled and analysed in terms of gas content and coal properties. The coals vary in rank from subbituminous B–A (Huntly) to subbituminous C–A (Ohai), and high volatile A bituminous (Greymouth). Average gas contents were 1.60 m3/t (s =0.2) in the Huntly core, 4.80 m3/t (s =0.8) in the Ohai cores, and 2.39 m3/t (s =0.8) in the Greymouth core. The Ohai core not only contained more gas but also had the highest saturation (75%) compared with the Huntly (33%) and Greymouth (45%) cores. Carbon isotopes indicate that the Ohai gas is more mature, containing higher δ 13C isotopes values than either the Huntly or Greymouth gas samples. This may indicate that the gas was derived from a mixed biogenic and thermogenic source. The Huntly and Greymouth gases appear to be derived solely from a secondary biogenic (by CO2 reduction) source. Although the data set is limited, preliminary analysis indicates that ash yield is the dominant control on gas volume in all samples where the ash yield was above 10%. Below 10%, the amount of gas variation is unrelated to ash yield. Although organic content has some influence on gas volume, associations are basin and/or rank dependent. In the Huntly core total gas content and structured vitrinite increase together. Although this relationship does not appear for the other core data for the Ohai SC3 core, lost gas and fusinite are associated whereas gelovitrinite (unstructured vitrinite) correlates positively with residual gas for the Greymouth data. To identify the controls on dissolved organic carbon (DOC) production, we incubated soils from 18 sites, a mixture of 52 forest floor and peats and 41 upper mineral soil samples, at three temperatures (3, 10, and 22°C) for over a year and measured DOC concentration in the leachate and carbon dioxide (CO2) production from the samples. Concentrations of DOC in the leachate were in the range encountered in field soils (<2 to >50 mg l−1). There was a decline in DOC production during the incubation, with initial rates averaging 0.03–0.06 mg DOC g−1 soil C day−1, falling to averages of 0.01 mg g−1 soil C day−1; the rate of decline was not strongly related to temperature. Cumulative DOC production rates over the 395 days ranged from less than 0.01 to 0.12 mg g−1 soil C day−1 (0.5–47.6 mg g−1 soil C), with an average of 0.021 mg g−1 soil C day−1 (8.2 mg g−1 soil C). DOC production rate was weakly related to temperature, equivalent to Q10 values of 0.9 to 1.2 for mineral samples and 1.2 to 1.9 for organic samples. Rates of DOC production in the organic samples were correlated with cellulose (positively) and lignin (negatively) proportion in the organic matter, whereas in the mineral samples C and nitrogen (N) provided positive correlations. The partitioning of C released into CO2–C and DOC showed a quotient (CO2–C:DOC) that varied widely among the samples, from 1 to 146. The regression coefficient of CO2–C:DOC production (log10 transformed) ranged from 0.3 to 0.7, all significantly less than 1. At high rates of DOC production, a smaller proportion of CO2 is produced. The CO2–C:DOC quotient was dependent on incubation temperature: in the organic soil samples, the CO2–C:DOC quotient rose from an average of 6 at 3 to 16 at 22°C and in the mineral samples the rise was from 7 to 27. The large accumulation of organic matter in peatlands has been partially attributed to litter decomposition rates, which are slowed by a high water table. To test this, we examined whether there were significant differences in the decomposition and N and P dynamics of ten foliar litters and wood blocks at three pairs of upland forest and peatland sites in the transitional grassland, high boreal and low subarctic regions of central Canada, using litterbags collected over a 12-year period. At two of the three pairs, the decomposition rate, as determined by proportion of the original mass remaining after 12 years and by the exponential decay coefficient ( k), was faster overall at the upland than at the peatland. In the third pair, there was no significant difference, despite the water table being close to the peat surface; warmer soil temperatures in the peatland than the upland may be the cause. In general, there were small losses or gains of N in the litters after 12 years, compared to the original litter, though there were some differences among litter types and sites, net gains in N likely reflecting the higher exogenous N availability. P was lost from most litters at the two northern pairs of sites, but at the transitional grassland pair, there were large net gains in P and greater variation among litters. The N:P ratio in the original litters ranged from 5 to 26 and after 12 years the ratio narrowed, with the site average of the ten litters ranging from 13 to 22, varying with the soil ratio. Decomposition rates and N and P dynamics after 12 years are different between upland and peatland sites: although the water table is a primary control on these differences, other factors such as temperature and soil nutrient status are also important. Over the past three decades social researchers have increasingly engaged children in projects that explore their experiences, views, and understandings. In this paper the authors share the observations of children involved in a project exploring family homelessness, particularly about what they think is important when conducting research with children and ways in which their views were implemented in the design and delivery of the project. The article presents an analysis of the implications of family homelessness in the development of a child. It cites the study conducted by the Institute of Child Protection Studies (ICPS) in Australia that explores accompanying children's experiences and homelessness. It is designed to provide the services needed by these children to combat the problems of homelessness including housing, statutory care and protection, and schools. Results indicate that children have valued the importance of having security in their relationships with their family members.

Abstract: Biodegradable polyurethanes are typically prepared from polyester polyols, aliphatic diisocyanates and chain extenders. We have developed a degradable chain extender (DCE) based on dl-lactic acid and ethylene glycol to accelerate hard segment degradation. Three series of polyurethane elastomers were synthesised to investigate the effect of incorporating DCE on synthesis, mechanical and thermal properties and in-vitro degradation. Polyurethane soft segments were based on poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) polyol. The hard segment was based on either ethyl lysine diisocyanate or hexamethylene diisocyanate in combination with ethylene glycol or DCE. Polyurethanes were characterised by gel permeation chromatography, tensile testing (Instron) and differential scanning calorimetry. Polymer degradation in-vitro (phosphate buffered saline) was tested by measuring mass loss, change in molecular weight and amine concentration in degradation products at three different time points over a 1 year period. Incorporation of DCE did not affect thermal or mechanical properties but had an influence on the in-vitro degradation. All polyurethanes exhibited considerable molecular weight decrease over the test period, and DCE-based polyurethanes showed the highest mass loss. The presence of the DCE and the initial molecular weight of the polyurethane are the key factors responsible for high mass losses. Differential scanning calorimetry, amine group analysis and the observation that mass loss was directly proportional to hard segment weight percentage, strongly supported that the polyurethane hard segment is the most susceptible segment to degradation in these polyurethanes. The PCL-based soft segment appears to undergo little or no degradation under these test conditions. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Although recent initiatives in Australia have attempted to respond to the needs of children and young people with care responsibilities, many continue to be unable to access responsive supports. A qualitative, exploratory study was conducted to identify the current needs and barriers to services for young carers and their families in Canberra, Australia. This paper focuses on a range of family, service and systems level issues that impede young carers’ access to services. The findings are based on semistructured, face-to-face interviews conducted with 50 children and young people with care responsibilities. Purposive and snowballing sampling were used to recruit the sample. Peer researchers were involved in the development of the research parameters and conducted and analysed interviews. Young carers in this sample reported high levels of need but low levels of support provided formally and informally by their extended families and the service sector. Major barriers to support included reluctance within families to seek assistance for fear of child removal, negative intervention and increased scrutiny; the families’ lack of awareness of available services; a lack of flexibility and responsiveness to the holistic needs of families; and a lack of service collaboration. The importance of recognising the specific needs of each member within the family unit was particularly highlighted as was the need for responsive and co-ordinated service supports. The large accumulation of organic matter in peatlands is primarily caused by slow rates of litter decomposition. We determined rates of decomposition of major peat-forming litters of vascular plants and mosses at five sites: a poor fen in New Hampshire and a bog hummock, a poor fen, a beaver pond margin and a beaver pond in Ontario. We used the litterbag technique, retrieving triplicate litterbags six or seven times over 3–5 years, and found that simple exponential decay and continuous-quality non-linear regression models could adequately characterize the decomposition in most cases. Within each site, the rate of decomposition at the surface was generally Typha latifolia leaves = Chamaedaphne calyculata leaves = Carex leaves > Chamaedaphne calyculata stems > hummock Sphagnum = lawn/hollow Sphagnum, with exponential decay constant ( k) values generally ranging from 0.05 to 0.37 and continuous-quality model initial quality ( q 0 ) values ranging from 1.0 (arbitrarily set for Typha leaves) to 0.7 ( Sphagnum). In general, surface decay rates were slowest at the bog hummock site, which had the lowest water table, and in the beaver pond, which was inundated, and fastest at the fens. The continuous-quality model site decomposition parameter ( u 0 ) ranged from 0.80 to 0.17. Analysis of original litter samples for carbon, nitrogen and proximate fractions revealed a relatively poor explanation of decomposition rates, as defined by k and q 0 , compared to most well-drained ecosystems. Three litters, roots of sedge and a shrub and Typha leaves, were placed at depths of 10, 30 and 60 cm at the sites. Decomposition rates decreased with depth at each site, with k means of 0.15, 0.08 and 0.05 y−1 at 10, 30 and 60 cm, respectively, and u 0 of 0.25, 0.13 and 0.07. These differences are primarily related to the position of the water table at each site and to a lesser extent the cooler temperatures in the lower layers of the peat. The distinction between bog and fen was less important than the position of the water table. These results show that we can characterize decomposition rates of surface litter in northern peatlands, but given the large primary productivity below-ground in these ecosystems, and the differential rates of decomposition with depth, subsurface input and decomposition of organic matter is an important and relatively uncertain attribute. We determined concentrations and fluxes of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in precipitation, throughfall, forest floor and mineral soil leachates from June 2004 to May 2006 across an age-sequence (2-, 15-, 30-, and 65-year-old) of white pine ( Pinus strobus L.) forests in southern Ontario, Canada. Mean DOC concentration in precipitation, throughfall, leachates of forest floor, Ah-horizon, and of mineral soil at 1 m depth ranged from ∼2 to 7, 9 to 18, 32 to 88, 20 to 66, and 2 to 3 mg DOC L−1, respectively, for all four stands from April (after snowmelt) through December. DOC concentration in forest floor leachates was highest in early summer and positively correlated to stand age, aboveground biomass and forest floor carbon pools. DOC fluxes via precipitation, throughfall, and leaching through forest floor and Ah-horizon between were in the range of ∼1 to 2, 2 to 4, 0.5 to 3.5, and 0.1 to 2 g DOC m−2, respectively. DOC export from the forest ecosystem during that period through infiltration and groundwater discharge was estimated as ∼7, 4, 3, and 2 g DOC m−2 for the 2-, 15-, 30-, and 65-year-old sites, respectively, indicating a decrease with increasing stand age. Laboratory DOC sorption studies showed that the null-point DOC concentration fell from values of 15 to 60 mg DOC L−1 at 0 to 5 cm to <15 mg DOC L−1 at 50 cm. Specific ultraviolet light absorption at 254 nm (SUVA254) increased from precipitation and throughfall to a maximum in forest floor and decreased with mineral soil depth. No age-related pattern was observed for SUVA254 values. DOC concentration in forest floor soil solutions showed a positive exponential relationship with soil temperature, and a negative exponential relationship with soil moisture at all four sites. Understanding the changes and controls of DOC concentrations, chemistry, and fluxes at various stages of forest stand development is necessary to estimate and predict DOC dynamics on a regional landscape level and to evaluate the effect of land-use change. We measured net ecosystem CO2 exchange (NEE), plant biomass and growth, species composition, peat microclimate, and litter decomposition in a fertilization experiment at Mer Bleue Bog, Ottawa, Ontario. The bog is located in the zone with the highest atmospheric nitrogen deposition for Canada, estimated at 0.8–1.2 g N m−2 yr−1 (wet deposition as NH4 and NO3). To establish the effect of nutrient addition on this ecosystem, we fertilized the bog with six treatments involving the application of 1.6–6 g N m−2 yr−1 (as NH4NO3), with and without P and K, in triplicate 3 m × 3 m plots. The initial 5–6 years have shown a loss of first Sphagnum, then Polytrichum mosses, and an increase in vascular plant biomass and leaf area index. Analyses of NEE, measured in situ with climate-controlled chambers, indicate that contrary to expectations, the treatments with the highest levels of nutrient addition showed lower rates of maximum NEE and gross photosynthesis, but little change in ecosystem respiration after 5 years. Although shrub biomass and leaf area increased in the high nutrient plots, loss of moss photosynthesis owing to nutrient toxicity, increased vascular plant shading and greater litter accumulation contributed to the lower levels of CO2 uptake. Our study highlights the importance of long-term experiments as we did not observe lower NEE until the fifth year of the experiment. However, this may be a transient response as the treatment plots continue to change. The article presents a study that determines the concentration of dissolve organic carbon (DOC) and the specific ultraviolet absorbance of 193 samples of water collected from groundwater, porewater, drainage ditches, and streams at peatlands in New Zealand. Results from the study shows that there was a wide range in DOC concentration in peatlands where there appeared to be large amount of iron. Also, DOC concentrations were large in ombrotrophic, or rain-fed peatlands.

In northern ecosystems, the onset and growth of spring photosynthesis may have an important influence on the annual carbon (C) budget, yet the controls have not been clearly identified, especially for peatlands. We used a 5-year set of daily carbon dioxide (CO2) exchange measurements derived from an eddy covariance tower located at Mer Bleue, an ombrotrophic bog near Ottawa, Canada, from March to May [day-of-year (DOY) 60–150], 1999–2003. We used half-hourly measured net ecosystem exchange minus modelled ecosystem respiration to estimate daily photosynthesis, as gross ecosystem production (GEP). The onset of GEP in each year was closely related to the thinning and disappearance of the snow cover, occurring between DOY 86 and 101. GEP increased during the spring, reaching 10-day average values of between 5 and 9 g CO2 m−2 day−1 by the end of May. This increase was initially associated with moss activity ( Sphagnum and Polytrichum), followed by the evergreen shrubs. Peat temperatures in the rooting zone (10–20 cm depth) and increases in shrub leaf nitrogen and chlorophyll a concentrations contributed to this rapid increase in GEP. Examination of moderate-resolution imaging spectroradiometer (MODIS) images over several years revealed that the temporal resolution (16-day composites) was inadequate to capture the onset of GEP but estimates of gross primary productivity and photosynthesis from MODIS 8-day composites for the most part followed the pattern and magnitude of CO2 exchange observed at the tower. No studies of seagrass decay have examined effects of the number of species contained within the detrital pool. Given the importance of decay for nutrient cycling and long-term productivity, we tested how three seagrass species affected decay in litterbags. Experimental results clearly showed that species identity was the predominant driver of mass loss, with total loss not differing between bags containing one, two and three species. Furthermore, we show there were also non-additive effects of mixing litter that were not predicted from single-species decay rates. The nature of the non-predictable mass loss varied both through time and with the number of species in the mixtures. This indicates that species richness indeed plays a role in this important ecosystem function but one that is of less importance than species identity. The concordance of these results with terrestrial studies suggests that mechanisms responsible for mixed-species decay rates may be broadly applicable across ecosystems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: A significant consideration in defining patterns of ecological interest is determining at what spatial scales these patterns are apparent. We performed a mensurative experiment to determine the effect of how changing the extent of sampling, using a fixed grain (panning up), changed our measurements of seagrass epiphyte biomass at a variety of hierarchical spatial scales, ranging from approximately 0.1m to 2.5×105 m. The experiment was performed twice at two sets of nested locations, also capturing an element of seasonality within the spatial extents. While the two regions and their nested locations differed in terms of epiphyte biomass, and values did change over time, mean epiphyte values were invariant at the local scale. This indicates that at the local scale (≤100m extent), we expect seagrass epiphyte biomass to be relatively homogenous. Contrary to theoretical predictions, we did not detect predictable changes in mean values of epiphyte biomass as sampling extent increased. Carbon (C) modeling and carbon dioxide (CO2) flux measurements in peatlands are dependent on the distribution and productivity of vegetation in a system with a high degree of spatial variability, often linked to the position of the water table. We tested the hypothesis that at a fine-scale (tens of metres) water table position exerts a strong control on species abundance, plant biomass, particularly photosynthetically active tissues, leaf area index (LAI), and areal foliar N and chlorophyll at Mer Bleue, a cool temperate peatland in eastern Canada. Total aboveground biomass ranged from 147 to 1011 g·m–2, with shrubs contributing between 42% and 72% of the total in the transects. We found significant (P < 0.05) positive relationships between foliar and total vascular plant biomass and mean water table position, and significant decreases in the shrub foliar:woody biomass ratio and moss biomass with a lower water table. However, there was no significant relationship between water table position and photosynthetically active tissues (vascular plant leaves and moss capitulum), ranging from 114 to 672 g·m–2) and the areal mass of N in these tissues, ranging from 1.5 to 6.7 g·m–2. Multivariate analyses of vegetation and environmental data showed that species distribution could be explained by both water table and chemistry gradients and that unimodal rather than linear responses best described the species and water table relationships. LAI ranged from 0.1 to over 3 and was correlated with both water table position and with vascular foliar biomass. Percent cover of shrubs was correlated with foliar biomass and LAI. Our results suggest that the less labour-intensive estimates of percent cover can be used to predict the vascular plant foliar biomass and LAI measurements. The lack of relationship between photosynthetically active tissues, tissue N concentrations, and water table may also explain the surprising lack of spatial variability in peak growing season eddy flux net ecosystem CO2 exchange in three different areas of the peatland. This article looks at a variety of barriers that restrict young carers' access to and satisfactory outcomes within mainstream education. According to estimates, there are 338,000 young carers under the age of 25 in Australia. Young carers, in reality, are not able to access education if their relative is not provided with appropriate care they are away. This lack of support has an impact on young people's school attendance. Poverty is a risk factor for early school leaving and also for achieving satisfactory outcomes in education.

Abstract: Recent advances in the synthesis of poly(γ-butyrolactone) have yielded homopolymers of up to 50,000Mw from the low-cost monomer γ-butyrolactone. This monomer has for the better part of a century been thought impossible to polymerise. Poly(γ-butyrolactone) displays properties that are ideal for tissue-engineering applications and the bacterially derived equivalent, poly(4-hydroxybutyrate) (P4HB), has been evaluated for such uses. The glass transition temperature (-48 to -51°C), melting point (53–60°C), tensile strength (50MPa), Young''s modulus (70MPa) and elongation at break (1000%) of P4HB make it a very useful biomaterial. Poly(γ-butyrolactone) degrades to give γ-hydroxybutyric acid which is a naturally occurring metabolite in the body and it has been shown to be bioresorbable. Investigation into the synthesis of poly(γ-butyrolactone) has recently produced homo-oligomeric diols 400–1000Mw that are suitable for reacting with diisocyanates to form polyurethanes. Biodegradable polyurethanes made from diols of polyglycolide (PGA) and poly(ɛ-caprolactone) (PCL) have the disadvantage of high glass transition and slow degradation, respectively. Poly(γ-butyrolactone) can be thought of as being the missing link in the biodegradable polyester family immediately between PGA and PCL and displaying intermediate properties. Nitrogen (N) and sulfur (S) play important roles in peatlands, through their influence on plant production and peat decomposition rates and on redox reactions, respectively, and peatlands contain substantial stores of these two elements. Using peat N and S concentrations and dry bulk density and210Pb dating, we determined the rates of N and S accumulation over the past 150 years in hummock and hollow profiles from 23 ombrotrophic bogs in eastern Canada. Concentrations of N and S averaged 0.80% and 0.18%, respectively, generally increased with depth in the profile and there was a weak but significant correlation between N and S concentrations. Rates of N and S accumulation over the past 50–150 years ranged from 0.5 to 4.8 g N m−2 yr−1 and from 0.1 to 0.9 g S m−2 yr−1. There were significant but weak correlations between C, N and S accumulation rates over 50-, 100- and 150-year periods. Over the last 50 years, rates of S accumulation showed little differentiation between hummocks and hollows, whereas the pattern for N accumulation was more variable (hummock minus hollow rate ranged from−1 to+1.5 g N m−2 yr−1), with hummocks generally having a larger N accumulation rate, correlated with the rate of carbon (C) accumulation. There was a modest but significant positive correlation between 50-year rates of N accumulation and wet atmospheric deposition of N measured between 1990 and 1996, with accumulation rates about four times that of wet deposition. The difference between deposition and accumulation of N is attributed to organic N deposition, dry deposition and N2 fixation. A weaker, but still significant, correlation was observed between 50-year S accumulation and 1990–1996 wet atmospheric S deposition, with about 75% of the deposited S accumulating in the peat. A laboratory experiment with peat cores exposed to varying water table position and simulated N and S deposition, showed that on average 87% and 98% of the deposited NH4+ and NO3−, respectively, and 58% of the deposited S were retained in the vegetation and unsaturated zone of the cores, supporting the results from the field study. Abstract: A challenge for many EAP teachers working on pre-sessional programs is to find ways to reconcile the dual aims of preparing students for university study and for the IELTS test. The study described here seeks to provide some guidance on this issue through an analysis of the type of writing required in the two domains. We compared the standard IELTS Task 2 rubric with a corpus of 155 assignment tasks collected at two Australian universities and found that whilst IELTS writing bears some resemblance to the predominant genre of university study-the essay, there are also some very important difference. Our findings suggest that the type of writing the test elicits may have more in common with certain public nonacademic genres, and thus should not be thought of as an appropriate model for university writing. We conclude that it is probably best to deal with test preparation and the broader EAP writing curriculum within separate programs. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

This paper describes a multi-stage image analysis system used to monitor the condition of aero engine components. A hierarchical framework, of analysis requirements was constructed then algorithms were developed to fulfil the requirements. The components are inspected using the fluorescent dye penetrant inspection (FPI) technique. This allows surface-breaking discontinuities to be detected, helping to ensure quality standards are being met. The multi-stage algorithm developments automate the FPI inspection using a data fusion approach. Raw image data, inspection knowledge and extracted image data are all fused to reach an inspection decision. The paper describes the main developments within the hierarchical process from image acquisition through to image processing, region selection, feature extraction, knowledge encoding and the final component inspection classification. We used a phytoestrogen (PE) and a phytoestrogen-free (PE-Free) diet to determine whether or not diet can have neurobehavioral effects on intermale aggression in Syrian hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus). In Experiment 1, 20 adult male hamsters were pre-tested for aggression and then placed on a PE (n=10) or a PE-Free diet (n=10) for 4 weeks in isolation. During week 5, experimental hamsters were exposed to a group-housed, nonaggressive opponent (NAO) for 5 min in a neutral cage arena. PE-fed hamsters exhibited more attacks (33.4±6.1) toward the NAO compared to the PE-Free-fed hamsters (18.1±4) (p<0.05). Interestingly, testosterone in the blood serum was higher in the PE-fed group (11.01±1.48 ng/ml) compared to the PE-Free group (6.5±0.87 ng/ml). In Experiment 2, 16 juvenile hamsters were weaned onto a PE (n=8) or a PE-Free diet (n=8). After 7 weeks on the diet, experimental hamsters were exposed to a NAO for 5 min in a neutral cage arena. Although the PE group exhibited higher levels of aggressive behavior, there were no statistically significant differences between groups. However, the PE group had higher levels of testosterone (9.0±0.95 ng/ml) compared to the PE-Free group (4.6±0.98 ng/ml) (p<0.05). In addition, analysis of the brains from both experiments revealed differences in binding for vasopressin 1A (V1A) receptors. Optical densities were converted to disintegrating units per min/mg. The PE-Free group had higher levels of V1A receptor binding (2689.93±254.8 dpm/mg) compared to the PE group (1907.32±136.3 dpm/mg) in the lateral septum (p<0.05). In addition, there were differences in the lateral hypothalamus, but the PE group had higher receptor binding (2550.9±63.59 dpm/mg) when compared to the PE-Free group (2011.9±174.14 dpm/mg) (p<0.05). In sum, these data present the first evidence that phytoestrogens can affect aggressive behavior and, concurrently, alter hormonal status and stimulate changes in the brain of male hamsters. We showed that sandy subsoils beneath peat near Ramsey Lake, MI, contained 7.5 to 8.0 kg organic C (OC) m-2 to a depth of 70 cm, compared with 1.6 to 3.6 kg m-2 in adjacent forest soils, from which the peatland had evolved through paludification. Compared with the soils beneath the forest, those beneath the peat contained similar amounts of oxalate-extractable Al (Al0) and less Fe, owing to loss of Fe under reduced leached conditions beneath the peat. Most of the extractable Al in the mineral horizons beneath peat was organically bound. Atomic pyrophosphate-extractable (Fep + Alp) Fe + Al/C ratios were smaller (<0.2:1) in the mineral horizons beneath peat than in the forest mineral subsoils (generally >0.2:1), indicating larger inputs and retention in the mineral subsoils beneath peat. Concentration of OC in subsoil samples was strongly (r² = 0.58, p < 0.001) related to the subsoil Al, null-point dissolved organic C (DOC) and clay concentrations. A DOC sorption study using peat pore water ranging from 0 to 117 mg DOC L-1 revealed null-point DOC (DOCnp) concentrations (at which there is neither gain nor loss of OC by the soil) varied from <1 to 417 mg DOC L-1 and was primarily related to Feo (negatively), Alo (negatively), and C (positively). We suggest that the increase in mineral subsoil OC beneath peat is related to the sorption of DOC carried by pore water percolating through the mineral subsoil, combined with slow rates of mineralization of sorbed DOC under anoxic conditions. We investigated the response of CO2 and CH4 production to a water table fluctuation and a SO42− pulse in a bog mesocosm. Net gas production rates in the mesocosm were calculated from concentration data by diffusive mass-balances. Incubation experiments were used to quantify the effect of SO42− addition and the distribution of potential CO2 and CH4 production rates. Flooding of unsaturated peat resulted in rapid depletion of O2 and complex patterns of net CH4, CO2, and H2S production. Methane production began locally and without a time lag at rates of 3–4 nmol cm−3 d−1 deeper in the peat. Similar rates were determined after a time lag of 10–60 days in the surface layers, whereas rates at lower depths declined. Net CO2 production was largest immediately after the water table position was altered (100–300 nmol cm−3 d−1) and declined to −50–50 nmol cm−3 d−1 after a few weeks. SO42− addition (500 mM) significantly increased potential CH4 production rates in the surface layer from an average of 132–201 nmol cm−3 d−1 and reduced it below from an average of 418–256 nmol cm−3 d−1. Our results suggest that deeper in the peat (40–70 cm) under in situ conditions, methanogenic populations are less impaired by unsaturated conditions than in the surface layers, and that at these depths after flooding the substrate availability for CH4 and DIC production is significantly enhanced. They also suggest that methanogenic and SO42−-reducing activity were non-competitive in the surface layer, which might explain contradictory findings from field studies. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

This paper investigates variation in knowledge construction in three disciplines—sociology, economics and physics—by drawing on Halliday''s notion of “metaphenomenon”. Specifically, the study analysed the frequency and type of agentive elements (participants and processes) in textbooks to find out the extent to which knowledge in these disciplines is attributed to individual scholars, schools of thought, conventional wisdoms and the like, as opposed to being realised in a non-attributed canonical form. The findings suggest that with respect to the feature of metaphenomenon, economics textbook discourse is arguably more akin to that of physics than its social science counterpart, sociology. Summary 1Above-ground biomass was measured at bog hummock, bog hollow and poor-fen sites in Mer Bleue, a large, raised ombrotrophic bog near Ottawa, Ont., Canada. The average above-ground biomass was 587 g m-2 in the bog, composed mainly of shrubs and Sphagnum capitula. In the poor fen, the average biomass was 317 g m-2 , comprising mainly sedges and herbs and Sphagnum capitula. Vascular plant above-ground biomass was greater where the water table was lower, with a similar but weaker relationship for Sphagnum capitula and vascular leaf biomass. 2Below-ground biomass averaged 2400 g m-2 at the bog hummock site, of which 300 g m-2 was fine roots (< 2 mm diameter), compared with 1400 g m-2 in hollows (fine roots 450 g m-2 ) and 1200 g m-2 at the poor-fen site. 3Net Ecosystem Exchange (NEE) of CO2 was measured in chambers and used to derive ecosystem respiration and photosynthesis. Three experiments examined whether famous faces would be affected by the age at which knowledge of the face was first acquired (AoA). Using a multiple regression design, Experiment 1 showed that rated familiarity and AoAwere significant predictors of the time required to name pictures of celebrities' faces and the accuracy of producing their names. Experiment 2 replicated an effect of AoA using a factorial design in which other attributes of the celebrities were matched. In both Experiments 1 and 2, several ratings had been collected from participants before naming latency data were collected. Experiment 3 investigated the accuracy and latency of naming celebrities without any prior exposure to the stimuli. An advantage for naming early acquired celebrities was observed even on the first presentation. The participants named the same celebrities in three subsequent presentations of the stimuli. Peat deposits of the Muara Siran, East Kalimantan area, were investigated for their vertical and lateral succession, to examine the characteristic variability, particularly its macro- and microtextures. The deposits are situated in the Kutai Basin, in the vicinity of several Cenozoic coal deposits. Peat samples were taken from twenty-seven coring sites in the area, using a MacCaulay peat corer. The Muara Siran peatlands lie between the Kedang Kepala and Belayan Rivers. Siran Lake lies between these rivers and within the peat system. The peat thickness varied from 0.5 m to 12 m. Decomposed sapric peat formed the basal and margins of the deposit, overlain by moderatelydecomposed hemic peat in the central part of the peatlands, though both sapric and hemic peat types are interbedded at the margins of the mire. The fibric peat types were found mostly at the top of the mire and only distal from any active streams. Twenty-four samples of peat were freeze-dried for petrographic analyses of both plant part and maceral analyses using a reflected microscope. On the average, the dominant plant parts were stems and wood (i.e. secondary xylem). Maceral composition was mostly from the huminite group (on the average 89%), particularly the macerals humodetrinite and textinite. Macroscopic peat type and microscopic composition are linked. Fibric peat was found to be rich in wood and textinite. Hemic was mostly composed of stems and wood with textinite and humodetrinite as the most abundant macerals. Sapric peat has near equal proportions of stems, wood, and macerated tissue. Humodetrinite is the most abundant maceral in sapric. The average ash and sulfur content were low, 1.29 wt.% and 0.11 wt.%, respectively. Understanding the physical characteristics of inland peat as in Muara Siran peatland is essential to build knowledge of how inland peat is formed and what makes it different from coastal peat. Although 'child safety' is now a national policy priority in Australia, there is little research exploring the practices in schools that contribute to children and young people's felt sense of safety and wellbeing. Drawing on a mixed-method Australian Research Council (ARC) Discovery project, this article presents findings from interviews with school staff (N = 10), leaders (N = 5) and nine focus groups with students (N = 58), in primary and secondary schools in three Australian states (New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia). We employ relational ethics, recognition theory and the theory of practice architectures to explore practices at school that support student wellbeing and safety. The findings contribute significantly to understanding the 'bundled' nature of current practices and the conditions that enable and constrain these. Close attention to these findings is critical as schools seek to operationalise the National Child Safe Principles and refine ongoing safeguarding procedures. The findings have informed the development of an online survey that is currently testing, on a much larger scale, which elements of ethical practice are most positively associated with students' safety, wellbeing and recognition at school. The Middle Jurassic coal seams located in the southern Ordos Basin display notably high concentrations of barium (Ba) and strontium (Sr). To acquire a comprehensive understanding of the source and occurrence of the elevated contents of Ba- and Sr-bearing minerals and their formation mechanism in the coal, a suite of petrological, mineralogical, and geochemical analyses was conducted on the Middle Jurassic coals of the Gaojiapu mine (No. 4 Coal) from the Binchang mining area, using optical microscopy, field emission-scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, X-ray fluorescence, and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. The results indicate that the No. 4 Coal is a high volatile B bituminous coal, which is characterized by low ash, medium sulfur, and high inertinite contents. The modes of occurrence of minerals identified in the coal, including calcite, dolomite, pyrite, quartz, kaolinite, anatase, barite, and celestine, indicate that the No. 4 Coal may have been subjected to multiple stages of solutions injection. Barium and Sr in the investigated coals are significantly enriched, exhibiting maximum values of 19738 μg/g and 9932 μg/g, respectively, while concentrations of other trace elements are generally depleted. Barite and celestine, generally coexisting with carbonate minerals, commonly occur as cell- and fracture-fillings. Furthermore, the strong correlation coefficients (r) for Ba vs. Ca + Mg and Sr vs. Ca + Mg (0.78 and 0.61, respectively) indicate that most barite and celestine have a close association with carbonate minerals of epigenetic origin. The highly elevated concentrations of Ba and Sr are thought to be primarily derived from solutions leaching barite deposits developed in the Qinling Orogenic Belt, which is located in the south of the Ordos Basin. When mapped spatially, the distributions of Ba and Sr concentrations are fan-shaped, decreasing from the NW to the SE of the mining area. Meteoric water containing dissolved CO 2 induced partial dissolution of carbonate rocks, and during this process, selected metal ions (e.g., Ca2+, Mg2+, Al3+, Si2+, Fe2+, Ba2+, and Sr2+) were redistributed and subsequently migrated along fracture zones to the coal seam. Spatial surface patterns of hummocks, hollows, ridges, and pools (microtopography) are common features of many northern peatlands and are particularly distinct within the vast peatlands of the Hudson Bay Lowland (HBL), Canada. Hypotheses and models describe how small-scale feedbacks among vegetation, hydrology, and nutrients cause spatial differences in peat accumulation that enable microforms and surface patterns to develop over time. Empirical tests of the predictions from theoretical models of these proposed feedback mechanisms are limited, particularly in large peatland complexes such as the HBL. We investigate feedbacks controlling peatland structure and function in an ombrogenous bog and a minerogenous fen in the HBL. Our sites represent surface patterns found in many northern peatlands, specifically spatially irregular hummocks and hollows, and parallel ridges and pools that are perpendicular to slope. We found the occurrence of different spatial patterns depends on position within a peat landform, with these differences attributed to the ecohydrological setting. In turn, the ecohydrological setting, with different water table depths, nutrient availability, and species composition, influences the strength and direction of feedback mechanisms at the microform scale. Our data support the prediction of a positive feedback between plant productivity and acrotelm thickness for peat accumulation and hummock growth and that this may be enhanced by water ponding on slopes to form ridge–pool tracks. We did not find evidence to support the proposed feedback among evapotranspiration-driven transport of water and nutrients for the development of hummocks. Our results suggest a combination of mechanisms operating at various temporal and spatial scales is associated with the development of surface patterns in northern peatlands. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ombrotrophic bogs can comprise a mosaic of vegetation patches and open-water pools, with hydrological and biogeochemical connections between pools and the surrounding peat and vegetation. To establish these connections, we studied the spatial heterogeneity of hydrology and water chemistry in two zones of distinct vegetation assemblages in the subboreal Grande plée Bleue peatland, southern Québec, Canada. We show that seasonal water-level fluctuations are greater and organic C, N and P concentrations are higher in the peat pore water of a forested zone than in a neighboring open-bog zone; that vegetation is responsible for 69% of the spatial variations in hydrology and water chemistry. Vegetation also explains 31% of the temporal variation in water chemistry, with higher increases in C, N and P concentrations over the growing season in the forested peat and pools than in the open-bog zone. We also show that C, N and P concentrations and water-level fluctuations in pools, especially during precipitation events, were lower than in the surrounding peat. Our results suggest the existence of small "watersheds" to the pools with water flowing in during wet and out during dry periods. Localized patterns emerge from the vegetation–hydrology–water chemistry interactions, with pools influencing the persistence of trees in the central part of an ombrotrophic bog. This article outlines client and service data from an early psychosis service in New South Wales (NSW), Australia, and presents a client and service profile, with a focus on the psychiatric, psychosocial, and physical health profile of young people with early psychosis. Implications for practice are discussed. Client and service data were captured through a range of processes and comprise a number of different datasets, specifically client demographical information and service data as routinely collected (N = 601), psychosocial data collected through a file audit (N = 33), and client physical health data maintained by the physical health nurse (N = 39). The service researcher extracted all data from each of the databases and analyzed the data descriptively for client and service profile information. The client profile data indicate early psychosis clients present with a range of psychiatric, psychosocial, and physical health vulnerabilities. The data presented support the need for mental health care to be provided in conjunction with primary health care, vocational and employment support, exercise and dietary interventions, and support with substance use. Furthermore, this article highlights the importance of family inclusive practice and trauma-informed care in early psychosis services. The findings support calls for services to be integrated and young people to be responded to holistically through the integration of psychological, psychosocial, and physical health care.
