AbstractObjectiveWorking within a series of partnerships among an academic health center, local health departments (LHDs), and faith-based organizations (FBOs), we validated companion interventions to address community mental health planning and response challenges in public health emergency preparedness.MethodsWe implemented the project within the framework of an enhanced logic model and employed a multi-cohort, pre-test/post-test design to assess the outcomes of 1-day workshops in psychological first aid (PFA) and guided preparedness planning (GPP). The workshops were delivered to urban and rural communities in eastern and midwestern regions of the United States. Intervention effectiveness was based on changes in relevant knowledge, skills, and attitudes (KSAs) and on several behavioral indexes.ResultsSignificant improvements were observed in self-reported and objectively measured KSAs across all cohorts. Additionally, GPP teams proved capable of producing quality drafts of basic community disaster plans in 1 day, and PFA trainees confirmed upon follow-up that their training proved useful in real-world trauma contexts. We documented examples of policy and practice changes at the levels of local and state health departments.ConclusionsGiven appropriate guidance, LHDs and FBOs can implement an effective and potentially scalable model for promoting disaster mental health preparedness and community resilience, with implications for positive translational impact.(Disaster Med Public Health Preparedness. 2014;8:511-526)

Objectives. Faculty and affiliates of the Johns Hopkins Preparedness and Emergency Response Research Center partnered with local health departments and faith-based organizations to develop a dual-intervention model of capacity-building for public mental health preparedness and community resilience. Project objectives included (1) determining the feasibility of the tri-partite collaborative concept; (2) designing, delivering, and evaluating psychological first aid (PFA) training and guided preparedness planning (GPP); and (3) documenting preliminary evidence of the sustainability and impact of the model.Methods. We evaluated intervention effectiveness by analyzing pre- and post-training changes in participant responses on knowledge-acquisition tests administered to three urban and four rural community cohorts. Changes in percent of correct items and mean total correct items were evaluated. Criteria for model sustainability and impact were, respectively, observations of non-academic partners engaging in efforts to advance post-project preparedness alliances, and project-attributable changes in preparedness-related practices of local or state governments.Results. The majority (11 of 14) test items addressing technical or practical PFA content showed significant improvement; we observed comparable testing results for GPP training. Government and faith partners developed ideas and tools for sustaining preparedness activities, and numerous project-driven changes in local and state government policies were documented.Conclusions. Results suggest that the model could be an effective approach to promoting public health preparedness and community resilience.

Background:Phenacetin is an analgesic that causes renal diseases and cancers of the upper‐urinary tract (UUT). It was banned in most countries from the late 1960s. This study aimed to evaluate, for the first time, the long‐term population impact of the phenacetin ban on UUT cancer rates.

Recent studies have led to the recognition of Galaxias depressiceps and reinstatement of Galaxias anomalus. The two species maintain near allopatric distributions and it has been suggested that spawning habitat availability, at least partially, controls the distribution of these species. The spawning habitat of each species was determined and an assessment of the influence of spawning habitat availability on the distribution of the two species was carried out. Factors that may have influenced the onset of spawning were also examined. We found that G. depressiceps selected spawning sites with a high proportion of boulder substrata and nests were found on the underside of or between boulders. G. anomalus spawned within the streambed substrata, under boulders or cobbles, in shallow water and narrow channels relative to the available habitat. Suitable boulder spawning substratum for G. depressiceps in the G. anomalus sites was limited and this supports the hypothesis that spawning habitat availability influences G. depressiceps distribution. Conversely G. anomalus spawning habitat was available in G. depressiceps streams, indicating that spawning habitat limitations are not restricting G. anomalus. The onset of spawning, for both species, did not appear to be related to daylight, phase of the moon, or stream water level, but all species started spawning as water temperatures rose. The proximity of G. anomalus spawning sites to the stream edge and their occurrence in poorly consolidated substrata presents two management issues. Water abstraction may expose spawning sites if stream water levels are lowered, and these sites are vulnerable to trampling by stock.

ABSTRACTThis paper reports on the use of contemporary music as a catalyst for teaching prepracticum students systemic conceptualization. It offers a brief review on conceptualization skills, innovative training using the arts, and describes the process for this program. Evaluation indicates that students apply conceptual analysis of lyrics and music (CALM) beyond the classroom.

The antioxidant activity of saliva has been investigated in 28 apparently healthy individuals and seven dental patients with periodontal disease. The results show that the major aqueous antioxidant component of whole saliva is uric acid, with lesser contributions from ascorbic acid and albumin. All are present at lower concentrations than those found in the plasma water. The total antioxidant activity (TAA) of saliva correlates (r2 = 0.972) with the concentration of uric acid, which contributes more than 70% of the TAA. Stimulation of salivary flow is associated with increased production of antioxidants. The antioxidant potential of saliva does not appear to be compromised in patients with periodontal disease but this may relate to the antioxidant flow from the gingival crevicular fluid.

Their first and final choice was Shahn's book. They decided to use excerpts from the book and emphasize his prose to make the book desirable. One of them was assigned to writing and illustrating book while the other was in charged with the design and drawings for the binding. Preliminary work on the project involved the selection of specific passages from the book with an exploration of visual ideas and concepts.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is associated with a variety of cognitive and behavioural disorders. A few reports have suggested that pharmacotherapy might be useful in the management of these disorders. We present a case of a patient who suffered a left subdural hematoma and herniated. Several months after the injury, his function was severely limited. Nevertheless, he demonstrated a clear improvement in response to oral methylphenidate and parenteral physostigmine. We conclude that specific pharmacotherapy may result in major cognitive and functional improvements in severely impaired patients.
