Abstract

Context. Supernova (SN) 1987A was a peculiar hydrogen-rich event with a long-rising (similar to 84 d) light curve, stemming from the explosion of a compact blue supergiant star. Only a few similar events have been presented in the literature in recent decades. Aims. We present new data for a sample of six long-rising Type II SNe (SNe II), three of which were discovered and observed by the Palomar Transient Factory (PTF) and three observed by the Caltech Core-Collapse Project (CCCP). Our aim is to enlarge this small family of long-rising SNe II, characterizing their differences in terms of progenitor and explosion parameters. We also study the metallicity of their environments. Methods. Optical light curves, spectra, and host-galaxy properties of these SNe are presented and analyzed. Detailed comparisons with known SN 1987A-like events in the literature are shown, with particular emphasis on the absolute magnitudes, colors, expansion velocities, and host-galaxy metallicities. Bolometric properties are derived from the multiband light curves. By modeling the early-time emission with scaling relations derived from the SuperNova Explosion Code (SNEC) models of MESA progenitor stars, we estimate the progenitor radii of these transients. The modeling of the bolometric light curves also allows us to estimate other progenitor and explosion parameters, such as the ejected Ni-56 mass, the explosion energy, and the ejecta mass. Results. We present PTF12kso, a long-rising SN II that is estimated to have the largest amount of ejected Ni-56 mass measured for this class. PTF09gpn and PTF12kso are found at the lowest host metallicities observed for this SN group. The variety of early light-curve luminosities depends on the wide range of progenitor radii of these SNe, from a few tens of R-circle dot (SN 2005ci) up to thousands (SN 2004ek) with some intermediate cases between 100 R-circle dot (PTF09gpn) and 300 R-circle dot (SN 2004em). Abstract

Long-duration gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are widely believed to be highly collimated explosions (bipolar conical outflows with half-opening angle θ ≈ 1°-10°). As a result of this beaming factor, the true energy release from a GRB is usually several orders of magnitude smaller than the observed isotropic value. Measuring this opening angle, typically inferred from an achromatic steepening in the afterglow light curve (a "jet" break), has proven exceedingly difficult in the Swift era. Here, we undertake a study of five of the brightest (in terms of the isotropic prompt γ-ray energy release, E_(γ,iso)) GRBs in the Swift era to search for jet breaks and hence constrain the collimation-corrected energy release. We present multi-wavelength (radio through X-ray) observations of GRBs 050820A, 060418, and 080319B, and construct afterglow models to extract the opening angle and beaming-corrected energy release for all three events. Together with results from previous analyses of GRBs 050904 and 070125, we find evidence for an achromatic jet break in all five events, strongly supporting the canonical picture of GRBs as collimated explosions. The most natural explanation for the lack of observed jet breaks from most Swift GRBs is therefore selection effects. However, the opening angles for the events in our sample are larger than would be expected if all GRBs had a canonical energy release of ~10^(51) erg. The total energy release we measure for the "hyper-energetic" (E_(tot) ≳ 10^(52) erg) events in our sample is large enough to start challenging models with a magnetar as the compact central remnant.

Abstract

Over the past decade, our physical understanding of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) has progressed rapidly, thanks to the discovery and observation of their long-lived afterglow emission. Long-duration (≳2 s) GRBs are associated with the explosive deaths of massive stars ('collapsars', ref. 1), which produce accompanying supernovae; the short-duration (≲2 s) GRBs have a different origin, which has been argued to be the merger of two compact objects. Here we report optical observations of GRB 060614 (duration ~100 s, ref. 10) that rule out the presence of an associated supernova. This would seem to require a new explosive process: either a massive collapsar that powers a GRB without any associated supernova, or a new type of 'engine', as long-lived as the collapsar but without a massive star. We also show that the properties of the host galaxy (redshift z = 0.125) distinguish it from other long-duration GRB hosts and suggest that an entirely new type of GRB progenitor may be required.

The cosmological utility of type Ia Supernovae prompted numerous studies of these events, and they are now well characterized observationally, both as individual objects and as a population. In contrast, all other types of supernovae (i.e. core-collapse events) are not as well observationally characterized. While some individual events have been studied in great detail (e.g. SN 1987A or SN 1998bw), the global properties of the core-collapse SN population are little known. However, in recent years, major drivers for change have emerged, among them the verification of the connection between core-collapse supernovae and long-duration Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs), the possible utility of some core-collapse supernovae (type II-P) as independent cosmological probes, and studies of core-collapse supernovae as high redshift targets for missions like the Supernova Acceleration Probe and the James Webb Space Telescope. The Caltech Core-Collapse Project is a large observational program using the Hale 200 inch and the robotic 60 inch telescopes at Palomar observatory to obtain optical photometry, spectroscopy and IR photometry of ~50 nearby core-collapse supernovae. The program is designed to provide a complete sample of core-collapse events, with well-defined selection criteria and uniform, high-quality optical/IR observations, as well as radio and X-ray light curves for some events. We will use this sample to characterize the little-studied properties of core-collapse supernovae as a population. The sample will be used as a comparison set for studies of supernovae associated with Gamma-Ray Bursts, to promote and calibrate the use of supernovae II-P for cosmography, and to set the stage for investigations of supernovae at high-z using coming space missions such as the Supernova Acceleration Probe and the James Webb Space Telescope.

Abstract

We present the results from a Hubble Space Telescope ACS study of the supernovae (SNe) associated with gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) 040924 (z = 0.86) and 041006 (z = 0.71). We find evidence that both GRBs were associated with an SN 1998bw-like supernova dimmed by ∼ 1.5 and ∼0.3 mag, respectively, making GRB 040924 the faintest GRB-associated SN ever detected. We study the luminosity dispersion in GRB/XRF-associated SNe and compare to local Type Ibc SNe from the literature. We find significant overlap between the two samples, suggesting that GRB/XRF-associated SNe are not necessarily more luminous and do not necessarily produce more 56Ni than local SNe. Based on the current (limited) data sets, we find that the two samples may share a similar 56Ni production mechanism.

Abstract

We present optical, near-IR, and radio follow-up of 16 Swift bursts, including our discovery of nine afterglows and a redshift determination for three. These observations, supplemented by data from the literature, provide an afterglow recovery rate of 52% in the optical/near-IR, much higher than in previous missions (BeppoSAX, HETE-2, INTEGRAL, and IPN). The optical/near-IR afterglows of Swift events are on average 1.8 mag fainter at t = 12 hr than those of previous missions. The X-ray afterglows are similarly fainter than those of pre-Swift bursts. In the radio the limiting factor is the VLA threshold, and the detection rate for Swift bursts is similar to that for past missions. The redshift distribution of pre-Swift bursts peaked at z ∼ 1, whereas the six Swift bursts with measured redshifts are distributed evenly between 0.7 and 3.2. From these results we conclude that (1) the pre-Swift distributions were biased in favor of bright events and low-redshift events, (2) the higher sensitivity and accurate positions of Swift result in a better representation of the true burst redshift and brightness distributions (which are higher and dimmer, respectively), and (3) ∼10% of the bursts are optically dark, as a result of a high redshift and/or dust extinction. We remark that the apparent lack of low-redshift, low-luminosity Swift bursts and the lower event rate than prelaunch estimates (90 vs. 150 per year) are the result of a threshold that is similar to that of BATSE. In view of these inferences, afterglow observers may find it advisable to make significant changes in follow-up strategies of Swift events. The faintness of the afterglows means that large telescopes should be employed as soon as the burst is localized. Sensitive observations in RIz and near-IR bands will be needed to discriminate between a typical z ∼ 2 burst with modest extinction and a high-redshift event. Abstract

The challenge of our software development is to introduce user-friendly document-orientation and graphical features that are typical in Windows software and to retain the possibility of easily extending existing legacy Fortran code. Keys to this development were the use of five development tools and our special management of shared memory. Numerical development of the code was thus continued in Fortran while the newly introduced multiple-document interface allows the new graphical features that are considered more user friendly (e.g. tool bar, status bar, animation, etc.) can be further refined and adjusted using Visual C++6.0 and the MS Visual Studio. Object orientation makes it possible to include modules with different type of dependencies that restrict the user interface to the specific use of the model. A large number of sub-models are combined and all input/output data have been adapted to an object-oriented standard. Abstract

We present preliminary results from the Caltech Core-Collapse Project (CCCP), a large observational program focused on the study of core-collapse SNe. Uniform, high-quality NIR and optical photometry and multi-epoch optical spectroscopy have been obtained using the 200″ Hale and robotic 60″ telescopes at Palomar, for a sample of 50 nearby core-collapse SNe. The combination of both well-sampled optical light curves and multi-epoch spectroscopy will enable spectroscopically and photometrically based subtype definitions to be disentangled from each other. Multi-epoch spectroscopy is crucial to identify transition events that evolve among subtypes with time. The CCCP SN sample includes every core-collapse SN discovered between July 2004 and September 2005 that was visible from Palomar, found shortly (< 30 days) after explosion (based on available pre-explosion photometry), and closer than ∼ 120 Mpc. This complete sample allows, for the first time, a study of core-collapse SNe as a population, rather than as individual events. Here, we present the full CCCP SN sample and show exemplary data collected. We analyze available data for the first ∼ 1/3 of the sample and determine the subtypes of 13 SNe II based on both light curve shapes and spectroscopy. Abstract

Over the six years since the discovery of the ?-ray burst GRB 980425, which was associated with the nearby (distance ~40?Mpc) supernova 1998bw, astronomers have debated fiercely the nature of this event. Relative to bursts located at cosmological distance (redshift z ˜ 1), GRB 980425 was under-luminous in ?-rays by three orders of magnitude. Radio calorimetry showed that the explosion was sub-energetic by a factor of 10. Here we report observations of the radio and X-ray afterglow of the recent GRB 031203 (refs 5-7), which has a redshift of z = 0.105. We demonstrate that it too is sub-energetic which, when taken together with the low ?-ray luminosity, suggests that GRB 031203 is the first cosmic analogue to GRB 980425. We find no evidence that this event was a highly collimated explosion viewed off-axis. Like GRB 980425, GRB 031203 appears to be an intrinsically sub-energetic ?-ray burst. Such sub-energetic events have faint afterglows. We expect intensive follow-up of faint bursts with smooth ?-ray light curves (common to both GRB 031203 and 980425) to reveal a large population of such events. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) and their afterglows are the most brilliant transient events in the Universe. Both the bursts themselves and their afterglows have been predicted to be visible out to redshifts of z approximately 20, and therefore to be powerful probes of the early Universe. The burst GRB 000131, at z = 4.50, was hitherto the most distant such event identified. Here we report the discovery of the bright near-infrared afterglow of GRB 050904 (ref. 4). From our measurements of the near-infrared afterglow, and our failure to detect the optical afterglow, we determine the photometric redshift of the burst to be z = 6.39 - 0.12 + 0.11 (refs 5-7). Subsequently, it was measured spectroscopically to be z = 6.29 +/- 0.01, in agreement with our photometric estimate. These results demonstrate that GRBs can be used to trace the star formation, metallicity, and reionization histories of the early Universe.

Abstract

We have characterized "MnO2 Resin," a new resin developed by the PG Research Foundation, for radium adsorption over wide ranges of pH, reaction times and salt concentrations. We show that the sorption of 133Ba (used as a proxy for Ra) is highly dependent on pH with the most useful range from pH 4 to 8. The surface layers of the Mn oxides apparently become more positively charged under acidic conditions (below pH 4), which prevents diffusion of positively charged alkaline earth species (e.g. Ba2+, Ra2+) into the sorption sites. Adsorption at higher pH is thought to be inhibited because of carbonate complexation. We found that the sorption characteristics for radium onto MnO2 Resin are especially favorable for low-salinity waters but the sorption is still very satisfactory for highly salted solutions (KD=2.8x10(4) in both cases) but with slower kinetics. For analytical purposes, both column and pump experiments showed high recoveries with no measurable discrimination between Ra and Ba regardless of flow rates in fresh water. Seawater tests showed that recoveries of Ra and Ba are lower than fresh water at elevated flow rates with Ra adsorption higher than Ba at flow rates above 10 ml/min.
