Abstract

We report a multi-wavelength Raman spectroscopy study of carbonaceous matter in 38 Antarctic micrometeorites (AMMs) from the 2006 CONCORDIA collection. The particles were selected as a function of their degree of thermal alteration developed during the deceleration in the atmosphere. These samples range from unmelted (fine-grained-Fg; ultracarbonaceous-UCAMMs) to partially melted AMMs (scorias-Sc) and completely melted particles (cosmic spherules-CS). More than half of the analyzed AMMs contain a substantial amount of polyaromatic carbonaceous matter with a high degree of disorder. The proportion of particles where carbon is not detected increase from the Fg to the Fg-Sc and to the Sc-AMMs, and no carbon is detected in CS. In addition, the spectral characteristics of the G and D bands of the carbonaceous matter in Sc-AMMs plot apart from the trend formed by the data from Fg-AMMs and UCAMMs. These results suggest that oxidation processes occurred during the deceleration of the particles in the atmosphere. In Fg-AMMs and UCAMMs, the spectral characteristics of the G and D bands reveal the high degree of disorder of the carbonaceous matter, precluding a long duration thermal metamorphism on the parent body and suggesting that AMMs have a connection with C1-C2 chondrites. The Raman parameters of the deuterium-rich carbonaceous matter of UCAMMs do not differ from that of Fg-AMMs. Using a 244 nm excitation, we detected the cyanide (-CN) functional group for the first time in a UCAMM, reinforcing the likely cometary origin of this type of micrometeorites.

Special Issue: 74th Annual Meeting of the Meteoritical Society, August 8-12, 2011, London, U.K.; International audience; Chondritic organic matter might have evolved on its parent body where subjected to shock metamorphism [1,2]. If the effects of shock waves on minerals have been studied in details from the experimental and observational approaches [3,4] little is known on their effect on the carbonaceous component. Here, we experimentally exposed fragments of matrix of the Murchison chondrite to shock loading up to 40 GPa. We describe the effects on the mineralogy as well as on the organic component.

Abstract

The high pressure behavior of bundled 1.35±0.1nm diameter single wall carbon nanotubes (SWNT) filled with C70 fullerenes (usually called peapods) has been investigated by Raman spectroscopy and compared with the corresponding behavior of the nonfilled SWNT. We show experimentally that two reversible pressure-induced transitions take place in the compressed bundle SWNT. The first transition, in the 2–2.5GPa range, is in good correspondence with predictions of the thermodynamic instability of the nanotube circular cross section for the studied tube diameter. An interaction between the fullerenes and the tube walls is then observed at about 3.5GPa, which evidences a progressive deformation of the tube cross section. The second transition takes place at pressures between 10 and 30GPa, and is evidenced by two effects by a strong frequency downshift of the Raman transverse modes and the concomitant disappearance of the fullerenes Raman modes in peapods. The pressure at which the second transition takes place is strongly dependent on the nature of the pressure transmitting medium. We also report irreversible effects at high pressure as the shortening of the tubes, the formation of nanostructures and the disappearance of the C70 Raman signal in some cases. Transmission electron microscopy studies are also reported supporting these transformations.

Abstract

Multiwavelength Raman spectroscopy is employed to investigate ultrananocrystalline diamond films deposited by the plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition technique. Recently, we have shown that the addition of nitrogen in the gas source during synthesis induce the formation of diamond n-type films, exhibiting the highest electrical conductivity at ambient temperature. This point is related with the formation of elongated diamond nanostructures and the presence of sp2-bonded carbon in these films. The Raman results presented here confirm these aspects and provide a better and deeper understanding of the nature of these films and their related optical and electronic properties.

91. Confocal Raman Microspectroscopy for Evaluating the Stratum Corneum Removal by 3 Standard Methods.

Abstract

Background/Aims: Stratum corneum (SC) removal is needed in biopharmaceutical studies or in evaluating the barrier function. The most common technique is the tape stripping method. However, it results in neither a homogeneous nor a complete removal. Methods: The removal qualities of tape stripping, cyanoacrylate skin surface biopsy and trypsinization were estimated in vitro via histological imaging and confocal Raman microspectroscopy (CRM) and compared. In addition, the potential of the noninvasive CRM as a replacement method is discussed. Results: Comparison between the 3 methods showed, as expected, that the tape stripping method did not result in a uniform removal over the whole surface even after 28 strips. The trypsinization and cyanoacrylate skin surface biopsies allowed a complete and uniform removal of the SC after defining a standard protocol (2 cyanoacrylate strips with a polymerization time of 15 min). Conclusion: The feasibility of CRM to control SC removal was demonstrated in vitro. Tape stripping is a simple method, but it is influenced by many extrinsic factors and axial drug quantification is difficult. With trypsinization and cyanoacrylate methods, the entire SC is removed so that quantification over the whole SC is possible but not an axial drug screening. Copyright © 2010 S. Abstract

Tholins are polymeric hydrogenated carbon nitrides formed from N2:CH4 mixtures exposed to electrical discharges. They are complex disordered solids, and their structural chemistry and formation processes are not yet fully understood. Tholins have been widely adopted as useful analogs of reddish organic solids associated with planetary bodies or in interstellar space (e.g., Titan's aerosols, reddish surfaces of outer objects, interstellar organics, etc.) for fitting astronomical observations. However, there has been little evidence to date that they in fact constitute pertinent model materials, i. e. with chemical structure/composition similar to those presumed to be present in planetary or interstellar organic solids. In this contribution, we first review recent advances made regarding the determination of composition and structure of tholins produced in the laboratory. They point to a high chemical selectivity in the range of functional groups present, the control of unsaturation by nitrogen, and the highly disordered character of the structures. In a second section, we discuss the relationship between chemistry and the optical properties of tholins, and we point out the lack of a unique relationship between the shape and strength of the visible absorption bands and the chemical composition or structure of the model tholins. The tholins exhibit similarities with HCN “polymers”, that are suspected to be present in cometary refractory dust. This points to the existence of possible similar polymerisation processes, and it suggests they could also be used as analogs of N-rich cometary organics. Laboratory-based studies of cometary dust might offer new insights on the “chemical relevancy” of tholins, as combined micro-analytical techniques will allow direct comparison of chemical information between the materials produced. In a third section we present recent results pertaining to the search for such compounds in cometary grains (Stardust grains, interplanetary dust particles - IDPs). We show that some N-rich spots in stratospheric IDPs are rich in cyanide species, but no tholin-like compounds or polymeric HCN have been detected to date. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Abstract

International audience; The Mars 2020 rover, essentially a structural twin of MSL, is being built to a) characterize the geology and history of a new landing site on Mars, b) find and characterize ancient habitable environments, c) cache samples for eventual return to Earth, and d) demonstrate in-situ production of oxygen needed for human exploration. Remote-sensing instrumentation is needed to support the first three of these goals [1]. The SuperCam instrument meets these needs with a range of instrumentation including the highest-resolution remote imaging on the rover, two different techniques for determining mineralogy , and one technique to provide elemental compositions. All of these techniques are co-boresighted, providing rapid comprehensive characterization. In addition, for targets within 7 meters of the rover the laser shock waves brush away the dust, providing cleaner surfaces for analysis. Abstract

Room temperature investigations on the shear stress and deformation mechanisms of (Mg0.9Fe0.1)SiO3 perovskite are performed in situ up to 32 GPa using radial X-ray diffraction and the diamond anvil cell as a deformation apparatus. The uniaxial stress supported by the perovskite aggregate is found to increase continuously with pressure up to 10.9(+/-1.9) GPa at 32(+/-1) GPa. Our measurements show no development of significant lattice preferred orientations in the sample, which indicates that deformation by dislocation glide is not the dominant deformation mechanism under these conditions. Assuming that the underlying cause for seismic anisotropy in the deep Earth is elastic anisotropy combined with lattice preferred orientation, our results indicate that silicate perovskite deformed under the conditions of this experiment would not be the source of seismic anisotropy. Abstract

Chemical analyses and Raman micro-spectroscopy have identified whitlockite (water- and halogen-free phosphate) in mantle xenoliths from Siberia. Whitlockite has not previously been reported from terrestrial mantle-derived rocks, but is the most common accessory phosphate in meteorites and igneous rocks from Mars and the Moon. The presence of the 'anhydrous' whitlockite, together with the breakdown of 'hydrous' accessory minerals (amphibole, phlogopite) in the same xenoliths, indicates that portions of the terrestrial upper mantle may be nearly as low in water and halogens as in inner parts of the smaller solar system bodies, regardless of enrichments of other highly mobile components (phosphorus, alkalis). Whitlockite may be an important host for some lithophile trace elements in those portions of the terrestrial mantle. It contains up to 3 times more rare earth elements than coexisting apatite but less Sr, Ba and U while Th abundances are similar. Thus, trace element abundances, patterns and ratios (e.g. Sr/Nd, Th/U) in whitlockite-bearing mantle rocks and coexisting fluids may be distinct from those for mantle rocks containing only apatite and/or other 'hydrous' minerals. Several generations of both whitlockite and apatite with different textural positions and abundances of Na, Mg, Sr and LREE were identified in some of the xenoliths. Furthermore, precipitation of the phosphates was accompanied by the formation of a distinct generation of clinopyroxene, which contains much less Zr (up to 10 times) but more LREE than clinopyroxenes formed in previous metasomatic episodes.
