51. Adsorption of Rose Bengal dye from waste water onto modified biomass

Abstract

Abstract Herein, adsorption of Rose Bengal dye (RB) from aqueous solution was investigated. Nano raw orange peel (OP) activated carbon (AC) coated with nano chitosan (Cs) to obtain nano chitosan/activated carbon (AC/Cs) composite which cross-linked with functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs-COOH) to create a novel composite (AC/Cs/MWCNTs) with high surface area (1923 m2/g). The examined parameters such as concentration (1–7 ppm), pH (6.5–9.5) and temperature (295–323 K) were traversed. The maximum removal efficiency was at pH 6.5, increased from 70.4% for nano OP to 94.7% for AC/Cs/MWCNTs nano composite. Langmuir isotherm model was the best fitting to acquired data (R2 ≥ 0.99). Also, the adsorption of RB matched with pseudo-second order model, t0.5 results for pseudo-second order was 4.4672 for nano OP and 1.2813 for AC/Cs/MWCNTs at 303 K. Thermodynamic studies showed that the adsorption of RB dye is exothermic and spontaneous due to the negative value of ΔG and ΔH.

Abstract

Direct air capture (DAC) offers a powerful strategy to counteract climate change by reducing the carbon dioxide levels in the air. Developing sorbent materials capable of sucking carbon dioxide gas continuously emitted into our atmosphere is critical. In this work, we present a functionalization strategy for a metal-organic framework (UiO-66), intending to increase the uptake and selectivity for capturing carbon dioxide at its ppm levels from the multi-component mixture of air. (3-Aminopropyl)triethoxysilane (APTES) was used to chemically modify the hydroxyl analog of UiO-66 (UiO-66-(OH)2) framework to form UiO-66-APTES. The developed UiO-66-APTES fully characterized using several analytical techniques, such as Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), and X-ray photoelectron microscopy (XPS). The calculated BET surface areas of UiO-66-(OH)2 and UiO-66-APTES were 752 m2 g−1 and 381 m2 g−1, respectively. Although the surface area decreased, adding several aliphatic amine groups enhanced the CO2 adsorption capacity, at 298 K and 1 bar, from 42.7 cm3 g−1 to 65.6 cm3 g−1, exhibiting a ∼150 % improvement over the unfunctionalized sample. Not only was the material proven to be selective for CO2 within a CO2/N2 gas mixture with a high selectivity of 160, but it also showed a mere marginal reduction in performance (i.e., CO2 uptake capacity) after 15 cycles. Moreover, the UiO-66-APTES system was used for the dynamic separation of CO2 from air mixture, revealing its potential as an attractive adsorbent for direct air capture.

Abstract

A simple mechanical dispersion method was used to elaborate new nanocomposite from the combination of single walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) and polyvinylcarbazole (PVK) polymer. The obtained samples were annealed at the moderate temperature of 333 K to achieve good dispersion and inhibit phase separation. Force constants calculations using Density Functional theory were correlated with FTIR measurements to support the interaction between both components. Raman scattering was used to check the dispersion state of SWCNTs on the PVK polymer. Optical absorption analysis and stationary photoluminescence and time resolved photoluminescence technics have been used to elucidate the change of optical properties after SWCNTs adding. The formation of bulk nano-hetero-junction resulting from the extended interfaces, leading to efficient dissociation of the charge pairs was shown by quenching effects in polymer photoluminescence when increasing SWCNTS contents. A noticeable decrease of the life time is observed by time resolved photoluminescence, which reflects the shortness of diffusion pathways and consequently an improvement of the electron transfer.

Abstract

Most heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems operate with one or more faults that result in increased energy consumption and that could lead to system failure over time. Today, most building owners are performing reactive maintenance only and may be less concerned or less able to assess the health of the system until catastrophic failure occurs. This is mainly because the building owners do not previously have good tools to detect and diagnose these faults, determine their impact, and act on findings. Commercially available fault detection and diagnostics (FDD) tools have been developed to address this issue and have the potential to reduce equipment downtime, energy costs, maintenance costs, and improve occupant comfort and system reliability. However, many of these tools require an in-depth knowledge of system behavior and thermodynamic principles to interpret the results. In this paper, supervised and semi-supervised machine learning (ML) approaches are applied to datasets collected from an operating system in the field to develop new FDD methods and to help building owners see the value proposition of performing proactive maintenance. The study data was collected from one packaged rooftop unit (RTU) HVAC system running under normal operating conditions at an industrial facility in Connecticut. This paper compares three different approaches for fault classification for a real-time operating RTU using semi-supervised learning, achieving accuracies as high as 95.7% using few-shot learning.

Abstract

Abstract Background Infection breakthrough after COVID-19 vaccination is a point of conflict in current literature not only because of the estimation of the potential hazards and symptoms severity but also due to establishing a vaccination policy and measuring the extent of immunity after vaccination in addition to the waning of the humoral immunity over time. To our knowledge, this is the first study to stratify the risk of post-COVID-19 vaccination breakthroughs in Upper Egypt. Methods In this cross-sectional observational study, we enrolled 369 vaccinated patients registered in our facility either admitted or in out-patient clinic. Patients were interviewed and any proven history of COVID-19 infection after vaccination was recorded. Results In the current study, 18.97% (70 patients) of the 369 subjects enrolled in the study had COVID-19breakthrough infection. Students were the high-risk group representing 18.6% of the study subjects. Hypertension, diabetes, and cardiac disease were the most comorbidities associated with a prevalence of 15.7%, 8.6%, and 4.3% respectively. Prior to COVID-19, confirmed infection was present in 42.9% of the study group. Fever, headache, myalgia, and cough were among the most common symptoms of the post-COVID vaccination breakthrough with a prevalence of 90%, 75.7%, 84.3%, and 74.3% respectively. Conclusion Breakthrough infection after COVID-19 vaccination is not uncommon. Most cases are mild and don’t require hospitalization. All types of vaccines tested in the current study offer adequate immunity and guard against severe COVID-19 infection. We encourage the current global policy of full vaccination. 61. Pathological and histomorphometric study of comparative gastric ulcer induced by indomethacin, aspirin, and ethanol in rats

Abstract

This study aimed comparison the gastric ulcer induced by indomethacin, aspirin, and ethanol on the level of pathological changes, ulcers surface area, and index. Forty rats were divided into 4 groups: the control group received normal saline, the remaining were the gastric ulcer groups, the Indomethacin group 40 mg/kg, the Aspirin group100 mg/kg, and the 80% ethanol group 5 ml/kg, all doses were orally administrated one time. The result revealed the ethanol group had the largest ulcer surface area, whereas the indomethacin group had a significantly lowest ulcer index after 3 hrs., and no significant differences among the groups after 24 hrs. Gastric ulcers were in the ethanol group after 3 hours, while the gastric ulcers were approximate in treated groups after 24 hrs. Histopathological changes revealed erosions or gastric ulcers with necrosis, hemorrhage, and inflammation, as well as complete ulcer exfoliation of mucosa reaching the muscularis in the indomethacin and ethanol groups after 24 hrs. The PAS/AB stain showed intense, slight, and moderate mucus reactivity in the indomethacin, aspirin, and ethanol groups, respectively, after 3 hrs., while decreased mucus reactivity in all treated groups after 24 hrs. The COX-2 expression increased in the indomethacin and aspirin groups except in the ethanol groups. We conclude that gastric ulcer surface area was severer in the ethanol group after 3 hrs., whereas severe gastric ulcers and a decline in mucus production after 24 hrs. The indomethacin group had a modest rise in COX2 expression, which was stronger in the aspirin and weak in the ethanol groups.

Abstract

The need for data transmission systems that are high-speed, secure, and reliable increases as wireless communication technologies continue to advance rapidly. Light fidelity (LiFi) can meet this need through its several advantages, including high transmission rates, low electromagnetic interference, and indoor localization capabilities. This study proposes a hybrid LiFi transceiver, which utilizes LiFi technology using orthogonal space–time block coding (OSTBC), based on the spatial multiplexing (SM) and transmit diversity (Tx). The suggested hybrid LiFi transceiver aims to integrate the advantages of OSTBC, Tx diversity, and SM techniques to enhance the performance of the overall transceiver. The suggested transceiver plan to implement one of the diversity techniques, which are either Tx diversity or SM at a time. The selected technique will depends on the channel quality, optimizing the transceiver's throughput and ensuring effective utilization of the available spectrum. Through simulation results, this research aims to demonstrate that the proposed hybrid LiFi transceiver surpasses conventional LiFi transceivers that lack Tx diversity or SM. Anticipated outcomes of this research include superior data rates, enhanced reliability, and increased resilience against real channel impairments. These findings hold substantial promise for applications that requires high-speed and reliable communication, including smart homes, the Internet of Things, and forthcoming 5 G/6 G communication networks.

Abstract

While many factors have been implicated in breast cancer progression, effective treatments are still lacking. In recent years, it has become clear that posttranscriptional regulation plays a key role in the aberrant gene expression underlying malignancy and metastasis. For example, the mRNA modification N6-methyladenosine (m6A) is involved in numerous post-transcriptional regulation processes and has been implicated in many cancer types, including breast cancer. Despite intense study, even within a single type of cancer, there is little consensus, and often conflicting results, as to the role of m6A, suggesting other factors must influence the process. The goal of this study was to determine if the effects of m6A manipulation on proliferation and migration differed based on the stage of disease progression. Using the MCF10 model of breast cancer, we reduced m6A levels by targeting METTL3, the main cellular m6A RNA methyltransferase. Knocking down Mettl3 at different stages of breast cancer progression indeed shows unique effects at each stage. The early-stage breast cancer line showed a more proliferative phenotype with the knockdown of Mettl3 while the transformed breast cancer line showed a more migratory phenotype. Interestingly, the metastasized breast cancer cell line showed almost no effect on phenotype with the knockdown of Mettl3. Furthermore, transcriptome wide analysis revealed EMT as the probable pathway influencing the phenotypic changes. The results of this study may begin to address the controversy of m6A’s role in cancer and suggest that m6A may have a dynamic role in cancer that depends on the stage of progression.

Background: Optimizing patient outcomes and reducing complications require constant monitoring and effective collaboration among critical care professionals. The aim of the present study was to describe the perceptions of physician directors, respiratory therapist managers and nurse managers regarding the key roles, responsibilities and clinical decision-making related to mechanical ventilation and weaning in adult Intensive Care Units (ICUs) in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA). Methods: A multi-centre, cross-sectional self-administered survey was sent to physician directors, respiratory therapist managers and nurse managers of 39 adult ICUs at governmental tertiary referral hospitals in 13 administrative regions of the KSA. The participants were advised to discuss the survey with the frontline bedside staff to gather feedback from the physicians, respiratory therapists and nurses themselves on key mechanical ventilation and weaning decisions in their units. We performed T-test and non-parametric Mann-Whitney U tests to test the physicians, respiratory therapists, and nurses’ autonomy and influence scores, collaborative or single decisions among the professionals. Moreover, logistic regressions were performed to examine organizational variables associated with collaborative decision-making. Results: The response rate was 67% (14/21) from physician directors, 84% (22/26) from respiratory therapist managers and 37% (11/30) from nurse managers. 68. Histochemical study of the hepatic metacestodes in sheep infected with hydatidosis

Abstract

This study aimed at detecting the liver histopathological changes of hydatid cysts sheep infestation. Seventeen sheep liver's samples, infested with hydatid cysts, were collected from the local butchers. The specimens sectioned, processed, and stained with hematoxylin and eosin and some special stains such as Gomori's aldehyde fuschin, Van Gieson, Toluidine blue, Alcian blue, Periodic Acid Schiff (PAS) and Mansso's trichrome. The results of haematoxylin and eosin stain of infected groups revealed the presence of the laminated membrane of hydatid cyst in different spots of hepatic tissue encircled by infiltration of inflammatory cells, an increase in fibrous tissue and severe necrotic hepatic tissue. The special stains as in Gomori's aldehyde fuschin revealed the protoscolex in green colour and elastic fibres of connective tissue surrounding hydatid cyst with its laminated membrane in purple colour. Van Gieson stain showed dark brown-purple colour of the elastic fibres reduplication of connective tissue surrounding hydatid cyst, while Toluidine blue stain sections revealed the dark blue stain of acidic components of hydatid cyst laminated membrane and necrotic hepatocytes. Alcian blue stain revealed the blue colour reactivity of the proteoglycans of the connective tissue surrounding hydatid cyst. PAS reaction stain revealed the magenta colour reaction of the intact hepatocytes in the control group comparing with depletion of magenta colour in necrotic hepatocytes surrounding hydatid cyst. Masson's trichrome stain revealed increased collagen fibres of the connective tissue. At the conclusion, it’s evident that infection with hydatid cysts causes a variety of histopathological alterations that appeared through several tissue stains.

Abstract

Retrofit fault detection and diagnosis (FDD) products are undergoing major advances in their ability to optimize the operation and maintenance of building heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems as a result of advances in artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and low-cost sensor networks. However, many market barriers still exist to their widespread adoption. This paper is the first to study the market and barriers for FDD products from the perspective of early adopters of HVAC rooftop retrofit FDD products as part of a field study of early adopters. Researchers engaged multiple sites and installed different FDD products at these sites for the purposes of (1) evaluating market readiness, market barriers, and user experience, (2) evaluating energy and demand savings, (3) evaluating the purchase, installation, training, and use process, and (4) determining overall FDD product effectiveness. This paper presents and focuses on the market study goals, methods, results, and findings determined based on survey data collected from key stakeholders participating in the study. These stakeholders included FDD providers, energy efficiency program managers and engineers, HVAC contractors, building owners, facility managers, energy managers, and consultants. The study provides results and analyses concerning (1) current knowledge and awareness levels for FDD technologies, (2) attitudes towards FDD products, (3) market barriers and resources available for FDD, and (4) insights on how stakeholders perceive and determine the value and cost for purchasing, using, and adopting FDD technologies and products. The study produced twelve (12) key findings, which provide valuable input for energy efficiency programs in their development of more effective FDD marketing programs that can increase adoption of FDD technologies and reduce barriers to widespread adoption.

Abstract

Background: This study assessed the potential cost-effectiveness of high (80–100%) vs low (21–35%) fraction of inspired oxygen (FiO2) at preventing surgical site infections (SSIs) after abdominal surgery in Nigeria, India, and South Africa. Methods: Decision-analytic models were constructed using best available evidence sourced from unbundled data of an ongoing pilot trial assessing the effectiveness of high FiO2, published literature, and a cost survey in Nigeria, India, and South Africa. Effectiveness was measured as percentage of SSIs at 30 days after surgery, a healthcare perspective was adopted, and costs were reported in US dollars ($). Results: High FiO2 may be cost-effective (cheaper and effective). In Nigeria, the average cost for high FiO2 was $216 compared with $222 for low FiO2 leading to a −$6 (95% confidence interval [CI]: −$13 to −$1) difference in costs. In India, the average cost for high FiO2 was $184 compared with $195 for low FiO2 leading to a −$11 (95% CI: −$15 to −$6) difference in costs. In South Africa, the average cost for high FiO2 was $1164 compared with $1257 for low FiO2 leading to a −$93 (95% CI: −$132 to −$65) difference in costs. The high FiO2 arm had few SSIs, 7.33% compared with 8.38% for low FiO2, leading to a −1.05 (95% CI: −1.14 to −0.90) percentage point reduction in SSIs. Conclusion: High FiO2 could be cost-effective at preventing SSIs in the three countries but further data from large clinical trials are required to confirm this.

The equivalent circuit model (ECM)-based traditional state-of-charge (SoC) estimate approaches combine all state variables into a single enhanced state vector. However, the stability and accuracy of the estimates are compromised by the correlations between RC voltages and SOC. In this article, the four battery chemistries have been discussed for their state variable characterization i.e. state of charge (SOC). The battery types considered are lead acid, nickel metal hydride, lithium ion. The manufacturer’s battery discharge curves are used to determine the model parameters, and a method is also described for doing this. An improved battery model is suggested in this study that can be applied to HEV design and analysis. By incorporating the electrical characteristics of the battery, the model generates precise results.

Wittig olefination at hetero-benzylic positions for electron-deficient and electron-rich heterocycles has been studied. The electronic effects of some commonly used protective groups associated with the N-heterocycles were also investigated for alkenes obtained in the context of the widely employed Wittig olefination reaction. It was observed that hetero-benzylic positions of the pyridine, thiophene and furan derivatives were stable after Wittig olefination. Similarly, electron-withdrawing groups (EWGs) attached to N-heterocycles (indole and pyrrole derivatives) directly enhanced the stability of the benzylic position during and after Wittig olefination, resulting in the formation of stable alkenes. Conversely, electron-donating group (EDG)-associated N-heterocycles boosted the reactivity of benzylic alkene, leading to lower yields or decomposition of the olefination products.

Abstract

Doxycycline has revealed potential effects in animal studies to prevent thrombosis and reduce mortality. However, less is known about its antithrombotic role in patients with COVID-19. Our study aimed to evaluate doxycycline's impact on clinical outcomes in critically ill patients with COVID-19. A multicenter retrospective cohort study was conducted between March 1, 2020, and July 31, 2021. Patients who received doxycycline in intensive care units (ICUs) were compared to patients who did not (control). The primary outcome was the composite thrombotic events. The secondary outcomes were 30-day and in-hospital mortality, length of stay, ventilator-free days, and complications during ICU stay. Propensity score (PS) matching was used based on the selected criteria. Logistic, negative binomial, and Cox proportional hazards regression analyses were used as appropriate. After PS (1:3) matching, 664 patients (doxycycline n = 166, control n = 498) were included. The number of thromboembolic events was lower in the doxycycline group (OR: 0.54; 95% CI: 0.26-1.08; P = .08); however, it failed to reach to a statistical significance. Moreover, D-dimer levels and 30-day mortality were lower in the doxycycline group (beta coefficient [95% CI]: −0.22 [−0.46, 0.03; P = .08]; HR: 0.73; 95% CI: 0.52-1.00; P = .05, respectively). In addition, patients who received doxycycline had significantly lower odds of bacterial/fungal pneumonia (OR: 0.65; 95% CI: 0.44-0.94; P = .02). The use of doxycycline as adjunctive therapy in critically ill patients with COVID-19 might may be a desirable therapeutic option for thrombosis reduction and survival benefits.

Abstract

Aerial images are increasingly adopted and widely used in various research areas. In marine mammal studies, these imagery surveys serve multiple purposes: determining population size, mapping migration routes, and gaining behavioral insights. A single aerial scan using a drone yields a wealth of data, but processing it requires significant human effort. Our research demonstrates that deep learning models can significantly reduce human effort. They are not only able to detect marine mammals but also track their behavior using continuous aerial (video) footage. By distinguishing between different age classes, these algorithms can inform studies on population biology, ontogeny, and adult-calf relationships. To detect beluga whales from imagery footage, we trained the YOLOv7 model on a proprietary dataset of aerial footage of beluga whales. The deep learning model achieved impressive results with the following precision and recall scores: beluga adult = 92%—92%, beluga calf = 94%—89%. To track the detected beluga whales, we implemented the deep Simple Online and Realtime Tracking (SORT) algorithm. Unfortunately, the performance of the deep SORT algorithm was disappointing, with Multiple Object Tracking Accuracy (MOTA) scores ranging from 27% to 48%. An analysis revealed that the low tracking accuracy resulted from identity switching; that is, an identical beluga whale was given two IDs in two different frames. To overcome the problem of identity switching, a new post-processing algorithm was implemented, significantly improving MOTA to approximately 70%. The main contribution of this research is providing a system that accurately detects and tracks features of beluga whales, both adults and calves, from aerial footage. Additionally, this system can be customized to identify and analyze other marine mammal species by fine-tuning the model with annotated data. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Improving the security of wireless networks by using statistical anomaly detection methods and artificial intelligence (AI) technologies. Given the rising frequency of wireless networks and the increasing complexity of cyber threats, it is imperative to create better methods for identifying and reducing security breaches. This work aims to create synthetic data consisting of anomalies in the form of synthetic time series. The dataset will consist of 10,000 data points, including extra abnormalities. Partition the data into separate training and validation sets. Furthermore, two further anomalies (Anomaly 1 and Anomaly 2) are added with the preexisting anomalies (Anomaly 3 and Anomaly 4). Next, exponential smoothing is used for anomaly identification in time series data. The system computes the residuals and detects anomalies using a predetermined threshold. The contamination parameter indicates the fraction of outliers present in the data. Consequently, we used one of the techniques of artificial intelligence and machine learning. Anomalies were detected using a single-class Support Vector Machine (SVM). The 'nu' parameter denotes the ratio of outliers present in the data. Typically, performance evaluation indicators such as accuracy, false positive rates, and detection rates are used to analyse the effectiveness of the anomaly detection system based on our expertise. The findings unequivocally establish the AI-based statistical anomaly detection technique as better in properly detecting and mitigating cybersecurity risks in wireless networks. Abstract

Hypogammaglobulinemia is a heterogeneous group of innate and acquired antibody deficiency with variable disease severity, recurrent pneumonia, and bronchiectasis. The outcome of COVID in patients with hypogammaglobulinemia is variable depending on age, comorbidities, type of immunodeficiency, and use of immunoglobulins. We report the favorable outcome of two family members diagnosed with DNAJC17-related retinitis pigmentosa and hypogammaglobulinemia syndrome and infected with SARS-CoV-2 following contact with their mother who had COVID-19. We describe the different immune dysfunction in these patients and their impact on the course and management of SARS-CoV-2 infection.

Abstract

Since recycled concrete aggregate (RCA) may reduce the demand for natural aggregate (NA), it is beginning to gain popularity in the construction industry as an alternative to natural aggregate. This study examines the mechanical properties of concrete with recycled aggregate in the city of Mosul. Four replacement percentages were studied (25%, 50%, 75% and 100%) with 0% replacement percentage was used as reference mix. The results show that the compressive strength of recycled aggregate concrete (RAC) mixtures decreased as fine and coarse RCA replacement level raised. This reduction in compressive strength was primarily caused by a weaker interfacial transition zone (ITZ) between the RCA and mortar, which is thought to be the strength-limiting phase in concrete. Additionally, all RAC mixtures' flexural strengths decreased as the fine and coarse RCA replacement level increased. This was due to the porosity and weak strength of the old mortar found in the residual mortar on the surface of the RCA. Also, the greater the replacement level of fine and coarse recycled concrete aggregate, the lower the ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV).
