While internationally, the Mittelstand in Germany is admired and many countries try to emulate it, the current debate in Germany praises the Silicon Valley model of entrepreneurship, contrasting the Mittelstand as low growth, low-tech and non-innovative—in short, as a hindrance to Germany's economic future. We therefore ask whether the Mittelstand actually is the antithesis to Silicon Valley entrepreneurship. We show that Mittelstand is about more than just small and medium enterprise size, identifying as its distinctive features the identity of ownership and management and a sense of belonging. In this regard, we also discuss the influence of historical paths and current institutional settings of the Mittelstand. Asking to what extent the Mittelstand is distinctive, we address its diverse contributions to economy and society. We suggest that the Mittelstand is an excellent example of everyday entrepreneurship and a vibrant segment of the economy which is also competitive, innovative, and growth-oriented, albeit in different ways compared to Silicon Valley entrepreneurship. In conclusion, we outline ideas for future research and implications for policymakers. In our view, future research and policies should stand back from dichotomies such as "Mittelstand versus Silicon Valley entrepreneurship" and acknowledge the vibrant diversity and heterogeneity of entrepreneurship.

62. British and German SMEs and the memory of war: a comparative approach.

- Abstract
At the end of the Second World War, small businesses in Britain and the western occupied zones of Germany faced the common problem of returning to peacetime production in very dissimilar circumstances. German companies had to overcome widespread destruction and loss, in an environment in which every recent political certainty had ceased to apply, and in which new ways of working had to be found. British firms, in contrast, rejoiced in the common achievement of victory, but also grappled with fatigue and complacency even as the economic context deteriorated. For companies in each country, the collective memory of war would influence the evolution of postwar business conduct and organizational culture. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

63. On private equity exits of family firms in the German Mittelstand.

- Abstract
There is limited existing research on factors influencing the preferences of family firms’ owner-managers for specific modes of external transitions of ownership such as private equity. In a multi-method approach, this study qualitatively gathers the attitudinal beliefs of family firms’ owner-managers about pursuing the private equity succession route. Four classes of beliefs are identified: perceptions of (1) firm continuance; (2) opportunities for firm development; (3) loss of firm ethos; and (4) commercial firm risks. These classes are then tested quantitatively with a sample of 195 family firm owner-managers among the German Mittelstand. Our results partially confirm the qualitative findings: the perception of positive development opportunities and the perception of commercial firm risks explain owner-managers’ intention to pursue a private equity succession, mediated through attitude. Overall, attitude emerges as the cornerstone in this context-specific intention model. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper presents a first empirical examination of all available German mini-bond offerings between 2010 and 2015. We compare the default probability according to a mini-bond's initial rating with that implied by credit risk models and show that rating agencies can create rating inflation by issuing overly favorable ratings. This creates a favorable opportunity for lower quality firms to compete for funding. In this environment, high-quality firms have an incentive to use mini-bond underpricing to signal their quality. Our data highlight that, according to information-based corporate finance theory, higher underpricing is correlated with higher quality mini-bond issuer`s and lower early default rates. - Abstract
This article takes a nuanced look at the role played by neighbourhood characteristics and local policies in facilitating or limiting the ways in which diversity‐oriented middle‐class families interact and deal with people of lower social classes in mixed‐class inner‐city neighbourhoods. The study draws on interviews and social network analysis conducted in neighbourhoods with different socio‐economic characteristics in the German cities of Hanover and Dusseldorf. A comparative view allows us to analyse how neighbourhood characteristics and local policies influence middle‐classes’ interactions across social boundaries. Our aim is to contribute to ongoing debates on urban policy options: In discussing the conditions encouraging cross‐boundary interactions of specific middle‐class fractions, we argue that the scope of local‐level action is not fully recognized in either policy or academic debates.

Using income tax data, we shed light for the first time on the market for company sales from 2001 to 2016. Both, the number of sales and the average gains generated with them have increased over time. Around 100,000 businesses were sold in 2016. On average, a seller realized a gain of 83,000 Euros. However, a small number of sales with high gains contrasts with a large number of sales with losses or low gains. The average gains realized by sale vary between economic sectors and legal forms. It is estimated that at least 14,000 to 17,000 businesses were sold in the course of business succession in 2016.

The EU Commission seeks to mobilize private funds for the sustainability transformation of the European economy through several regulatory measures. This study investigates the impact of this regulatory development on the German Mittelstand, i.e., owner-managed companies. Apart from direct effects, such as new reporting obligations, we investigate indirect effects, such as new informational needs of business customers and financial partners.

This study explores the societal impact of Mittelstand companies and how it is achieved in a process of collaborative societal value creation. Regional communities perceive different aspects of societal impact, depending on local problems. Economically poorly positioned regions equate it with the economic contribution; if regions are economically well positioned, the awareness of the indirect impact on the regions increases. A considerable part of the societal impact of Mittelstand companies arises from the interaction with other regional actors, with changing roles of the actors. Prerequisites for this collaborative societal value creation are regional networking and shared regional identities that is reflected in collective narratives on regional development. The exchange between structurally weak regions, now strong Mittelstand regions, and those undergoing structural change provides new impulses for the diverse roles and contributions of Mittelstand companies.

As part of their SME Report Thuringia, the authors note that Thuringia's gross domestic product has developed less favorably than GDP in Germany as a whole since 2015, while the unemployment rate in Thuringia has fallen sharply and was below the national average in 2021. In their view, the low start-up momentum is a cause for concern. They see the decline in the workforce and the shortage of skilled workers, the digital transformation, the need for decarbonization and coping with the Corona pandemic as the main challenges facing SMEs. To address the shortage of skilled workers, they recommend increasing the attractiveness of Thuringia as a business location for skilled workers and the highly qualified. The authors also believe that there is a need for greater prioritization in funding policy. Priority should be given to investments that promote structural change and contribute to a sustainable increase in the productivity of companies, for example through labor-saving (digital) technologies.

Familienunternehmen. Dies entspricht rund 90 % aller Unternehmen. 591.000 oder 18 % dieser Familienunternehmen sind frauengeführt. Familienunternehmen erwirtschaften in Deutschland rund 37 % aller Umsätze. In ihnen sind rund 56 % aller sozialversicherungspflichtig Beschäftigten tätig. The IfM Bonn has been estimating the number of owner-managed enterprises (family businesses) and the number of female-led family businesses repeatedly since 2001. Our current estimation concludes that around 3.2 million or roughly 90 per cent of all enterprises in Germany were family businesses in 2019. 591,000 or 18 per cent of these family businesses were under female leadership. Family businesses were responsible for around 37 per cent of all sales and for 56 per cent of all employees subject to social security contributions.

This study uses a systematic literature review to examine the extent to which an entrepreneur's individual resilience influences business development during the Covid-19 pandemic. It also considers which resilience factors are of particular importance. Although individual resilience is an important entrepreneurial ability, which significantly influences a company's decision-making, change, and innovation processes, research has so far paid little attention to the topic. To date, only discrete aspects of an entrepreneur's individual resilience amid the Covid-19 pandemic, such as mental health, individual life satisfaction, or social and family networks, have been considered. A consideration of entrepreneur individual resilience over time and a definitional and conceptual anchoring is missing.

This paper provides empirical analysis of income stratification in contemporary Russian society and its dynamics in recent decades. The paper analyses in detail different approaches (absolute and relative) to defining income groups. It is shown that the most widely used thresholds of the absolute approach cannot be efficiently applied to contemporary Russian society, as they fail to define the subgroups within the population, while relative approach, based on the median income as the social standard of living, appears more effective for income stratification in Russia. A specific income stratification scale is suggested. Its application shows that middle-income groups currently dominate in income structure, however, the incomes of their representatives are not high in absolute terms and their living standards are quite modest. Income stratification in Russia has been noticeably transformed over the last 20 years – the middle-income group has been growing while the low income and high-income groups’ shares have been declining. The proposed scale implies possibilities for structural adjustments such as regional- and settlement-specific disparities in income distribution; it can be easily replicated and allows broad potential for future research, including international comparisons of income stratification in societies undergoing transitional processes., Studies of Transition States and Societies, Vol 11, No 2 (2019)

This study develops a resilience model for companies based on a literature re-view. Based on this, we identify influencing factors and mechanisms relevant tocoping with the Corona pandemic using case studies. It shows that resilience is context-dependent. On the one hand, it depends on the preconditions of com-pany, the possibilities to act and the use of these possibilities. On the other hand, resilience arises in the tension between robustness and vulnerability factors at the personal, company-related and environment-related levels. Every company has its resilience profile and thus faces individual challenges.

The global competition compelled companies to look for flexibility and cost-reduction (Antalik-Juhász-Poór, 2014). The support of small- and medium sized enterprises (SME) is a central element of the European Union (EU) policies, because SME are meaningful for the prosperity of the European Union´s economy. Furthermore SMEs fulfil the needs of local markets (Bencsik-Juhász, 2014). A central goal is to support entrepreneurship and to design a best possible business environment for SME. The policies and hence the decision on the financial support measures are built on a definition of SME by the EU. However, the current definition seems to be insufficient or not flexible enough. The "Mittelstand" is a specific German economic and social definition approach; the support of it is an elementary goal of several German state subsidy programs. The example of the German "Mittelstand" shows, that there is a gap between the EU definition and the business reality. As a result companies of the "Mittelstand" might not be considered as SME and could therefore not apply successfully for financial support. This paper tries to give an overview about the basic elements and intentions as well as measures of the European Union to support SME. Thus it tries to shed some light on the definition gaps by describing exemplarily the German "Mittelstand" as a specific phenomenon and its definition. By these theoretical bases it aims to pave the way for further research and empirical studies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

88. Income stratification in Russia: what do different approaches demonstrate?

- Abstract
Income stratification in Russia has been noticeably transformed over the last 20 years - the middle-income group has been growing while the low income and high-income groups' shares have been declining. The proposed scale implies possibilities for structural adjustments such as regional- and settlement-specific disparities in income distribution; it can be easily replicated and allows broad potential for future research, including international comparisons of income stratification in societies undergoing transitional processes.

The article examines the transformation of small to mid-sized family-owned firms into micromultinationals with production and sales subsidiaries around the world. Topics discussed include case studies of seven companies and an assessment of factors such as regeneration, internationalization, and challenges facing the German Mittelstand (middle class) since the 1970s. It is suggested that the pull-factor of global market opportunities transformed the businesses rather than local problems. The 1993/94 unification crisis is presented as a turning point in this internationalization process.

96. Ready to assume power: the SA during the Great Depression.

Reiche, Eric G.
- Abstract
Between 1924 and 1929, the SA had to be content with playing a minor role on the German political stage. As the reverberations of the Depression hastened the enfeeblement of the moderate parties, the emphasis increasingly focused on the extremes of the Right and the Left. When the election successes of the early thirties gave new importance to the NSDAP, the SA ceased to be a member of the supporting cast and became a major participant. Aided by the prestige that success at the polls gave the party and drawing strength from the economic and political turmoil of the period, the ranks of the SA rapidly swelled from 1930 onward. Those who had from the start regarded the Weimar Republic with suspicion but had been unwilling to join the relatively small Nazi movement in the midtwenties now began to see it as a meaningful alternative to the allegedly moribund moderate parties. The real or potential victims of the Depression offered another source of support. Within two and a half years, the Nürnberg SA grew to more than seven times its pre-Depression strength, numbering twenty-five hundred men by the end of 1932. The growth of the Nürnberg SA during these years was both a cause and a result of the growing polarization of Germany's political spectrum. The more pronounced the radicalization, the more did the SA attract new members. At the same time, the SA became a more frequent and active participant in violent clashes with its opponents, thereby fueling the flames of extremism. The masses of destitute unemployed provided one major reservoir from which the paramilitary organizations of the extreme Left and Right drew strength. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

97. “The guarantor of unity”: Nürnberg's SA between 1924 and 1929.

- Abstract
Between the Beer Hall Putsch and the onset of the Depression, the Nazi movement seemed to be at the nadir of its existence. As the fortunes of the Weimar Republic improved, that of the Nazis declined. In the “Golden Twenties,” Germany enjoyed relative prosperity. Its diplomatic prestige was enhanced by the Locarno agreement and Germany's entry into the League of Nations, and only a small minority of Germans continued to support Hitler. From 1920 to 1923, his party had fed on insecurity, instability, violence, and the hopes of the losers for a better future. The party would once again exploit these factors to great advantage after 1929. For the moment, there were fewer losers in Germany, including Nürnberg. None of these developments meant a complete eclipse of the Nazi movement, and certainly not so in Nürnberg. In Germany as a whole, Nazi votes dropped from 6.5 percent in the May 1924 national elections to 2.6 percent four years later, but support for the Nazis in Bavaria remained proportionately at least twice as high. In Nürnberg, it never dropped below 10 percent of the total, and the Nazi movement thus remained a far from negligible factor in local politics, partly owing to Streicher's incessant and vitriolic attacks on the city's mayor. Both the relative decline of the Nazi movement in Germany as a whole and its comparatively high profile in Bavaria and Nürnberg influenced the development of the Nürnberg SA during these years. So, of course, did Hitler's relative neglect of the SA during the first eighteen months after the NSDAP's reestablishment in early 1925. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
The internecine conflict between Hitler's organization and other völkisch groups, as well as Streicher's opposition to the NSDAP had prevented the establishment of a party local until October 1922. As a result, the formation of the SA in Nürnberg was similarly delayed. For its future development, this proved to be both an advantage and a drawback. When he swung his support behind Hitler, Streicher was already a well-known political figure in Nürnberg. Consequently, he could draw on a considerable following in building the Nazi movement in that city. Both party and SA would benefit from this. Aided by the economic and social turmoil of inflation and by Hitler's growing prominence in Bavaria, Nürnberg's NSDAP and SA grew rapidly during 1923. Despite these successes, problems abounded. First, owing to its relatively late establishment, Nürnberg's SA had existed for little more than a year when Hitler's putsch resulted in the prohibition of the Nazi movement. Second, although Streicher was able to attract many followers with his abusive propaganda techniques, other Nürnberg citizens found these methods repulsive. This undoubtedly inhibited the growth of the SA. Third, Streicher's feud with the local SA leadership and with the local NSDAP organization during 1922-23 diverted energies and further limited the growth of the SA. Finally, the SA's establishment had been preceded by that of several other paramilitary organizations on the Right. Some of these were to provide the nucleus of the SA's membership; some would lose members to the SA during 1923, others, however, managed to compete successfully with the SA in the battle for the allegiance of rightist activists. Since German unification there have been dramatic and highly visible changes in the German financial system and relations between banks and firms in Germany. The traditional Hausbank system has weakened, as securities markets have become more important for both borrowers and savers. The demands of financial investors on how German firms manage themselves have—for better or worse—become increasingly influential in this time. In this article, I advance the thesis that bank-industry relations in Germany became increasingly differentiated, with one set of firms moving into an institutional environment readily characterized as market-based finance. Meanwhile, most German firms remain in a bank-based environment that, while not quite the same as the Hausbank model that prevailed at the time of unification, is still easily recognized as such. These changes in the financial system have had numerous consequences for the German economy, including increased pressure on firms to make greater profits and increased pressure on labor to limit wage gains and make concessions in the interest of corporate competitiveness.
