Abstract

In this study, the corrosion behaviour of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) coated basalt fibre (BF) (BFCNTs) obtained by chemical vapour deposition (CVD), was studied. During CVD, the CNTs were grown on BF, (a) at different growth temperatures and (b) for different growth times. The physicochemical measurements were performed using X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, and field-emission scanning electron microscopy. The corrosion performances were investigated using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), potentiodynamic sweep (PDS), linear polarization resistance (LPR) and weight loss measurements. The BFCNT prepared at 650 degrees C for 120 min exhibited the best corrosion stability during the prolonged exposure to 0.1 M NaCl electrolyte. The outcomes of this study would be useful in designing the carbon nanotubes coated basalt fibre with the best corrosion resistance.

Abstract

Acute encephalitis syndrome (AES) has a diverse etiology and Japanese encephalitis virus (JE) is the most common etiological agent implicated in its causation. However, AES in different geographical locations have distinct etiological agents that may have seasonal variability, miscellaneous presentations and outcome. We wished to study the demographical profile, etiology and clinical parameters of AES in a tertiary referral center of Uttarakhand as data from this newly created state is lacking. An observational cross-sectional study was conducted where various demographic and clinical profile, etiology and laboratory parameters in 111 patients of AES were studied and comparison was made between the two outcome groups (improved and expired). In the present study, tuberculous meningo-encephalitis was the most common etiology (22.5 %) of AES followed by scrub typhus (19.8 %). Statistically significant (p-value < 0.05) difference was Observed between patients who expired from those who improved in terms of hematological parameters (mean leucocyte and platelet counts), renal function (mean creatinine, pH, bicarbonate) and liver functions (liver enzymes and albumin levels).This study highlights the fact that AES can have different etiologies depending upon various factors like difference in geographic location, season, agent and vector prevalence. Identification of the specific etiological agent is important for management, understanding the prognosis, instituting timely prophylaxis and public health interventions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

89. A Hospital-Based Retrospective Comparative Study of Complications, Outcomes, Clinical and Laboratory Parameters of Malaria with and without Neurological Involvement.

Abstract

Background & Objectives: Classically associated with Plasmodium (P.) falciparum, neurological complications in severe malaria is associated with increased morbidity and mortality. However, reports implicate the long considered benign P. vivax for causing severe malaria as well. We aimed to analyse the cerebral complications in malaria, and study if there is a species-related difference in the presentation and outcomes. Methods: We retrospectively compared patients with malaria hospitalised from 2009-15, with (n=105) and without (n=1155) neurological involvement regarding outcomes, complications, demographic attributes, clinical features, and laboratory parameters. Subsequently, the same parameters were studied in those with cerebral malaria due to mono-infections of P. vivax or P. falciparum and their co-infection. Results: Cerebral malaria was observed in 8.3% (58/696), 7.4% (38/513) and 17.6% (6/51) of P. vivax, P. falciparum and combined plasmodial infections respectively. Those with cerebral malaria had significantly (p<0.05) longer hospitalisation, delayed defervescence, required mechanical ventilatory support and dialysis despite comparable levels of azotemia and renal insufficiency, and adverse outcomes compared to non-cerebral malaria. Severe thrombocytopenia, respiratory distress and mechanical ventilation were significantly (p<0.05) associated with P. vivax cerebral malaria. Conclusions: The plasmodial species are comparable in clinical and laboratory parameters and outcomes in cerebral malaria in isolation and combination (p>0.05). P. vivax is emerging as the predominant cause of cerebral malaria, and its virulence is comparable to P. falciparum. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
