Backgrounds: A wide variety of factors such as individualistic and social/environmental factors appear to determine whether or not individuals can successfully quit substance use. In this study, Social Cognitive Theory was used as a theoretical framework to predict substance use abstinence among a sample of Iranian substance users. Methods: Data from 269 male substance users undergoing residential treatment were analyzed using logistic regression to assess the effects of socio-cognitive factors (treatment motivation, perceived social support, drug avoidance self-efficacy, and drug quitting outcome expectations) and background characteristics measured at 5-7 days after admission on drug abstinence status measured at 6-month follow-up. Results: Abstinence rate after 6-month follow-up was 48.6%. Perceived social support, treatment motivation, prior substance use treatment, and age of onset of substance use were predictors of abstinence. However, substance use treatment outcome was not influenced by drug avoidance self-efficacy, drug quitting outcome expectations, and demographic variables. Conclusion: Our findings do not support the notion that pretreatment drug avoidance self-efficacy and drug quitting outcome expectancies are among the most consistent predictors of substance use treatment outcome. Accordingly, future research is recommended to explore post-treatment levels of these variables on treatment outcome. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Effectiveness of mindfulness-based therapy on a variety of psychopathological disorders is well documented. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of mindfulness-based cognitive group therapy on cognitive emotion regulation in patients with substance abuse disorder. Methods: The study had a quasi-experimental design, with pretest, posttest, and two groups (experimental and control). The population of this study included men with substance abuse disorder, who were under methadone maintenance therapy (MMT) in two outpatient methadone clinics in the city of Mashhad from 2014 to 2015. From among them, 60 were selected randomly and allocated to an experimental group and a control group (n = 30 per group). The experimental group underwent eight 1.5 hour sessions of therapeutic interventions held once a week. The tools for data collection consisted of cognitive emotion regulation questionnaire. The control and experimental groups were similar in terms of mean age, education level, and duration of abuse. Results: While similar in pretest, the two groups obtained significantly different scores in the posttest, suggesting the effectiveness of group therapy. Conclusion: Mindfulness-based cognitive group therapy can impact psychological factors involved in opiate addiction. Thus, we can use this approach as a nonpharmacological treatment for these patients. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Motivation to quit substance abuse is a key element in encouraging patients to seek treatment but research to identify factors that may influence motivation has received less attention, particularly on treatment-seeking substance abusers in short-term residential camps. This study investigated predictors of motivation for substance abuse treatment among patients in short-term residential treatment. A total of 317 male substance abusers undergoing residential treatment were enrolled in this cross-sectional study and assessed typically at 5–7 days after admission. Motivation was measured by the Circumstances, Motivation, and Readiness scales (CMR). Using multiple regression analysis, factors considered to potentially predict motivation were assessed. The mean age of participants was 28.6 9 ±6.55 (range: 15–55) years. Participants were predominantly single (47.9%) and most were employed part-time (42.9%). Of the examined factors, perceived social support, drug avoidance self-efficacy, and drug quitting outcome expectancies emerged as important predictors of motivation (F= 9.548 withp< 0.001,R= 0.238), whereas demographic and substance use related variables did not (p> 0.05). Results of this study confirm that cognitive constructs such as perceived avoidance self-efficacy, perceived social support, and outcome expectancies need to be considered in treatment assessment and addressed in treatment implementation. Objective: The development of vertebrae is a complex phenomenon that is correlated with distinct morphological and biochemical alterations in the paraxial mesenchyme and glycoconjugates. The purpose of this study is to investigate the glycosylation pattern in paraxial mesenchyme-forming vertebrae by using the lectin histochemical technique. Materials and Methods: In this descriptive-analytic study, B4G fixed paraffin sections of 9 to 15 day Balb/c mouse embryos were processed for histochemical studies using seven different HRP-labelled lectins: Glycin max (SBA), Maclura pomifera (MPA), Wistaria floribunda (WFA), Vicia villosa (VVA) which all of them are specific for N-acetylgalactosamine (GalNAc), Ulex europius (UEA1, binds to α-L-fucose), wheat germ agglutinin (WGA, binds to sialic acid), and Griffonia simplicifolia (GSA1-B4, binds to galactose terminal sugars). The sections were observed separately by three examiners who were blinded to the lectins. Grading was done according to the intensity of the tested lectins' reactions with the specimen, from negative (-) to severe (+++). Data was analysed with SPSS software (version 11.5) and the non-parametric Kruskal Wallis test; p<0.05 was considered significant. Results: Our findings showed that among the tested lectins, only GalNAc residue sensitive lectins showed regulated changes in paraxial mesenchyme. Reactions of WFA and MPA lectins with paraxial mesenchyme were severe on GD9. Reactions of WFA continued to GD15 constantly, while MPA reactions continued strongly to GD12, significantly decreased thereafter (p<0.001), and then disappeared. VVA and SBA bindings initiated weakly on GD10 and continued to GD12 without changing. These reactions increased significantly (p<0.001) thereafter, became severe to GD14, and later disappeared. The other tested lectins did not reveal regulated changes. Conclusion: According to these findings it can be concluded that only the GalNAc terminal sugar showed temporally regulated changes during the early embryonic development of vertebrae in mice. Therefore it most likely plays a key role (s) in the development of vertebrae, especially in the conversion of mesenchymal cells into chondroblasts. The other tested terminal sugars may have no role in this phenomenon. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: In spite of recent progress in mRNA technologies and their potential applications for treatment of human diseases, problems such as the transient nature of mRNA limit the stability of gene up-regulation and, thus, potentially reduce mRNA efficiency for gene therapy. Using human β-globin 5' and 3' untranslated regions (UTRs), this study aimed to develop the different chimeric constructs of mRNAs to increase the stability of destabilized green fluorescent protein (EGFPd2) in HEK 293 cells. Methods: Purified human β-globin (HBG) 5'-3'UTRs, and the coding sequence of destabilized green fluorescent protein (EGFPd2) were amplified separately and ligated to each other using SOEing PCR method in a different format. As controls, the original construct of EGFPd2 under the control of T7 promoter was used. Following in vitro transcription, HEK 293 cells were then transfected with several constructs and incubated at 37°C in a CO2 incubator. They were monitored under a fluorescence microscope every four hours for the first 24 hr, then every 12 hr afterwards. The resulting fluorescence was measured as a surrogate for translation efficiency and duration. Results: By monitoring the HEK cells over 48 hr, cells transfected with mRNA with various HBG UTRs showed significantly different fluorescence intensity and stability in comparison with the pEGFPd2 prototype (control transcript) overtime. Overall, the images show that replacement of the 3' UTR end of the prototype vector pGFPd2 with the 3' end of β- globin mRNA increases the half-life of the chimeric mRNA for more than 32 hr. Conclusion: This result indicates that β-globin 3' UTR would definitely increase the half-life of mRNA and may help to decrease the mRNA therapeutic dosage in the treatment of diseases associated with mRNA therapy. - Abstract
Pharmaceutical compounds at trace concentrations are found in the environment, especially in drinking water and food, posing significant negative effects on humans as well as on animals. This paper aimed to examine the diagnostic catalytic properties and efficacy of a novel synthesized photocatalyst, namely FeNi
3 @SiO2 @ZnO magnetic nanocomposite, for the removal of tamoxifen (TMX) from wastewater under simulated sunlight. According to the results, it was found that TMX was completely degraded operating under optimized conditions (i.e. pH = 7, catalyst dose = 0.01 g/L, initial TMX concentration = 20 mg/L and reaction time = 60 min). The reaction kinetics of TMX degradation followed a pseudo-first order kinetics model. The final by-products from the TMX photodegradation were water, carbon dioxide, acetic acid, nitroacetic acid methyl ester, 2-methyl-2-pentenal, and 4-methyl-2-pentanol. In addition, the synthesized photocatalyst could successfully performed five consecutive photodegradation cycles. The obtained results revealed that the synthesized FeNi3 @SiO2 @ZnO magnetic nanocomposite holds a great potential to be applied as a photocatalyst for the degradation of TMX on an industrial scale., Competing Interests: Declaration of competing interest The authors of the manuscript with title (A comprehensive study on the application of FeNi3@SiO2@ZnO magnetic nano-composite as a novel catalyst for the photocatalytic degradation of tamoxifen drug in the presence of simulated sunlight) confirm that they don’t have any conflict or competition of interest with other authors and researchers in this field., (Copyright © 2020 Elsevier Ltd. - Abstract
Background and Aim: Emotional intelligence (EI) theory provides a view about predicting effective factors in people's lives whether in education or profession. According to earlier studies, people who have higher emotional skills are more successful in many of life aspects :e.g., reaction to stress and controlling stress situations. Since students are the future of society, this study was carried out to evaluate the relationship between EI and education stress in the students of Birjand University of Medical Sciences (BUMS)., Materials and Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 260 students were selected by proportional sampling in four faculties: Medicine, Nursing and Midwifery, Paramedical Sciences, and Health. Data were collected using two questionnaires: The standardized EI Shering's (33 questions, five domains) and the Student-Life Stress Inventory (57 questions, nine domains). The obtained data were analyzed by independent t-test, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and linear regression at the significant level of α = 0.05., Results: Totally, 65.8% of participants were females and 31.1% were males. The educational level of the participants included Associate's degree (44.6%) Bachelor's degree in science (31.2%), and medical science (23.1%). There was no significant correlation between EI scores and educational stress in students. But there was a significant relationship between EI with sex (P = 0.02) and mean of EI scores with three domains of academic stress: Personal favorites (P = 0.004), reaction to stressors (P = 0.002), and performance in stressful situations (P = 0.001)., Conclusion: Although EI growth in different individuals can promote their success, it cannot decrease academic stress by itself which was particularly significant in females. Therefore, other causes of stress such as individual differences must be taken into consideration.

- Abstract
Background: To achieve stable social development, the cooperation of all members of a -community is basically required. Providing and improving the health standard is one of the most fundamental dimensions of human social evolution. This is more essential than the other aspects of development (public cooperation demands) and health volunteers are the forerunners of this cooperation, who have voluntarily set about having the public participate in providing and elevating the level of community health. The present study aimed to determine the effect of implementing "the health communication plan" by health volunteers in suburban villages regarding the health knowledge and attitude of rural women., Materials and Methods: In this quasi-experimental study, knowledge and attitude of 121 females (age 15-49 years), who were under the supervision of health centers in four suburban villages (the case group), before and after performing the health volunteer plan, were compared to those of 94 females (age 15-49 years) in another group of four suburban villages (the control group) lacking health volunteers under the care service of two rural health centers. Data gathering instrument was questionnaires and interviews. The obtained data were analyzed by SPSS (ver. 11.5) using statistical paired t-test and Sign test. P≤0.05 was considered to be statistically significant., Results: The study showed that the mean of rural women's health knowledge and attitude had increased and there was a significant difference between before intervention and after intervention values in the two groups (P<0.001). Comparing the averages of the two groups also revealed a significant difference (P<0.001)., Conclusions: According to the findings and the positive effects of performing suburban health volunteer plan on the health knowledge and attitude of rural women, it would therefore be important to suggest that suburban health volunteers are very helpful and effective in improving the knowledge and attitude level of rural women. In brief; as a direct result of their health performance, performing the plan all over rural health centers is recommended.
