The article analyses the book of miracles ‘‘Historia abo powieść zgodliwa...” (Vilnius, 1622), compiled by Theodosius Borowik, as a means of forming the cult of the Zhyrovitse icon. The chronology, typology, and geography of the miracles of Our Lady of Zhyrovitse are analysed to discuss the expression of the icon cult in the Unitarian Church. The study reveals the transformation of a religious artefact of the Orthodox tradition – the icon of Our Lady of Zhyrovitse – into the object of the union of the Eastern and Western Churches. It provides new data on the functioning of this icon in the society of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania in the second half of the 16th and the early 17th century.

The article delves into the concept of miracles from the perspective of the Catholic Church, tracing the evolution of human consciousness from fear to awe to curiosity, leading to the phenomena of mythologization, religious experiences, philosophical explanations, and rational understanding of everyday events through science and technology. The relevance of the study is due to the great influence and role of the Catholic Church in the modern world. Miracles as one of the key phenomena related to Catholic values are examined. By means of categorial and discourse analyses, along with the case study method, the work highlights the theological interpretation of miracles, distinguishing between official Christian doctrines and vernacular religious practices. It explores the process of institutionalization of religion and the significance of miracles within the context of Catholicism, emphasizing their role as divine revelations and signs of the supernatural. The article discusses the theological views on miracles of such thinkers as Augustine of Hippo and St. Thomas Aquinas, underscoring how miracles attest to faith and the resurrection. Contemporary examples of miracles recognized by the Catholic Church, such as those at Lourdes and involving figures like St. Padre Pio and Carlo Acutis are outlined. The process of canonization and the phenomenon of stigmata are described. The discussion extends to the philosophical debates on miracles, contrasting rationalistic criticisms from figures like David Hume and Baruch Spinoza with the religious significance attributed to miraculous events. The article also critiques the positivist perspective that subjugates religion to reason and science, emphasizing the enduring nature of miracles in religious discourse despite scientific advancements. In conclusion, the study advocates for a reconnection with the miraculous, religious, and metaphysical realms, positing that embracing mystery and awe can imbue life with meaning, wonder, and purpose, countering the secularization thesis that diminishes the role of miracles and spirituality in the modern world.

The article departs from the evolving concept and practice of the tourism and hotel industry's environmental stewardship, with a special emphasis on the industry's initiatives inspired by the latest United Nations' agreements to tackle global warming and reverse biodiversity loss. It singles out the international resort enterprise for its unmatched yet dormant potential to deliver transformational insights into borders-blind linkages and relationships shaped by evolutionary and ecological forces and interwoven in the marvel and fragility of our living planet. Thismove is corroborated with analyses of the latent economic power of wonder embedded in the natural world's infinite connectivity and is emboldened in its promise via comparisons with the ever-grander ambition of science philanthropy and eco-philanthropy. The article makes the case and supplies a blueprint for a new generation of resort products and resort portfolios master-planned to shepherd and sustain through their business model transnational routes of awareness and guardianship of "one Earth" and to facilitate science-charted recalibration of global conservation strategies. This paper explores the pivotal role of women in Islamic mysticism and their presence in the urban landscape of modern Islamic practice. Drawing from fieldwork conducted between October 2018 and May 2022 at various Sufi tomb-shrines affiliated with the Chisti order, it investigates the reverence of women who have been posthumously recognized as 'saints' in contemporary Sufi communities. This interdisciplinary study, which merges history, social anthropology, and gender studies, aimed to explore the notions of barakāh (blessings) and karāmāt (miracles) linked to the dargahs (tomb-shrines) of female Sufi 'saints.' The research focuses on two revered figures: Bibi Zulekha, mother of Shaikh Nizamuddin Auliya, and Bibi Fatima Sam, held in high esteem within the Chisti Sufi tradition. Their legacies are traced through Sufi hagiographies (taẕkirāt) and memoirs (malfūz̤āt) compiled over time. The study extends to the cultural and religious practices at their tomb-shrines in Delhi's contemporary urban setting. Video documentation of the dargahs' mise-en-scène and the collection of oral histories were conducted, culminating in an audio-visual archive and a documentary film. The paper incorporates this visual material by providing online links where appropriate. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Çoban Baba Türbesi is located on a high rock mass on the west of the Tokat-Erzincan state highway at the entrance to the village of Çobanlı, connected to the district of Gölova, Sivas province. Since there is no inscription of the mausoleum, the date of construction is not known for sure. It is believed that the Çoban Baba, who is buried in the tomb, is the owner of miracle. There is a legend about the Çoban Baba and this legend has been passed down from generation to generation and has come down to the present day. According to this legend, Yavuz Sultan Selim built his mausoleum because Çoban Baba, whom he met while hosting the army around Çobanlı on his way to the Egyptian War, gave treats to the army and showed generosity. According to legend, 16. when the architectural features of the mausoleum, which should have been built in the first quarter of the century, are evaluated, it is understood that it was built at an earlier date. The Çoban Baba Mausoleum is a one-story, square-plan tomb structure from the inside and outside, and it is covered with a dome from the inside and a four-way pyramidal roof from the outside. The mausoleum, which was built with cut stone, has similar features with Anatolian mausoleum architecture in terms of decoration features. The Çoban Baba Mausoleum, which is a modest example of Anatolian mausoleum architecture in terms of its architectural features, is one of the places to visit in the Sivas region. In this study, the architectural features, material-technique and decoration features of the Çoban Baba Mausoleum, which is the subject of legends, were examined and evaluated. The Çoban Baba Mausoleum retains its importance in terms of being an important cult center among the people and the earliest dated structure in the region. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

STIGMATIZATION , *CROSSES , *INCARNATION , *MIRACLES , *SOCIAL stigma - Abstract
The exegesis of the two laude (songs in praise) dedicated by Jacopone da Todi to Francis of Assisi offers a significant contribution to the understanding of the "Franciscan nature" of "brother Jacopone". In both texts Jacopone celebrates in solemn tones the signs of the stigmata impressed on the body of Francis, as the supreme expression of his extreme poverty and certification of his election as an Alter Christus. The intertextual reading of laude XL and LXXI in the light of Jacopone's polemical, prophetic and mystical rhymes also highlights how Jacopone intends to present the stigmatised Francis, going beyond his Bonaventurian sources, as the apocalyptic Christ who renews the grace of Trinitarian Love extended to man by the incarnation of the Son in Christ, sacrificed on the cross and resurrected, then thwarted by the ingratitude of men seduced by the Enemy. Jacopone, projecting the miracle of the stigmata onto the eschatological background of the last times, participates, in this way, in the lively controversies of his time within the Order, suggesting that the defence of a rigorous and radical interpretation of the adhesion in poverty to the Crucifix can counteract the action of those who intend, by loosening its integrity, to nullify, at the instigation of the antichrist, the cross. PHYSICAL cosmology , *PHYSICAL laws - Abstract
Today's rich cosmological data sets require integration into a Biblical framework. The light-travel time issue is the most obvious difficulty involved, but it is by no means the only one. This article seeks to lay the groundwork for such integration by considering three Scripture passages: Hebrews 11:1-3; 2 Peter 3:5-7; and Romans 8:18-23. It notes that an accurate understanding of origins requires explicit inclusion of supraprovidential (i.e., miraculous) action, but that we should limit such action to what the Genesis record specifically warrants. It further suggests that in cosmology we can restrict this supraprovidential action to the Creation Week; that is, miraculous events connected with the Deluge did not affect the Universe as a whole. Finally, it suggests that there is no warrant for assuming that the physical effects of the Fall included changes in the actual laws of physics themselves. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The question of how God works is one which many struggle with. While this is especially true in the case of the issue of creation with respect to Genesis 1, it really is a broader issue relating to any intervention of God into the physical realm, especially with regard to human affairs. While readers of this journal generally assume that God can intervene in the space-time continuum, this study begins with a reminder of why the Christian view is that He can. It observes that these interventions are given a generic name of 'miracles,' and then reviews the nature of miracles focusing on examples of Biblical descriptions of events that are presented specifically as miracles by the Biblical author. This is followed by an evaluation of the terminology used in Genesis 1 to describe the original creation event and why Biblically speaking it must be viewed as miraculous. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article examines the devotional practices presented by The Book of Margery Kempe in connection to late-medieval English image debates. While scholarly consensus holds that Kempe displays an uncritical approach to the popular devotional practices of her time and a strong attachment to effigies, I argue that she espoused a much more nuanced view, deeply influenced by the anxieties raised in the clash between the Church and the iconoclastic Lollards. This article offers a case study of Kempe's approach by analysing a scene in which her desire to experience a miracle of image animation is denied. This is a highly unusual outcome within The Book's literary genre, which can be explained as an active engagement with the issues raised in the image debates. I conclude that the scene should be read as offering guidance on the idolatrous potential of devotional images and how to properly engage with such artefacts. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Biblical healing stories, especially when subjected to ableist interpretations, can fuel discriminatory attitudes toward people with disabilities. The Chosen series has opted to address issues of disability directly, not only by adapting healing stories from the Gospels, but also by creating storylines to depict other people with disabilities, including two of the twelve disciples. This article uses film criticism and disability studies to examine depictions of disability in The Chosen over the course of its first three seasons. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

CHRISTOLOGY , *PROPHECY , *MIRACLES - Abstract
Many interpreters have observed allusions to Elijah and Elisha in the signs of the Gospel of John. Older studies typically evaluated the parallels to determine either John's use of a signs source, the provenance of the Gospel, or the christology of early Christian communities. But several recent studies taking a more narrative-oriented approach have asked what kind of christology is generated when one reads the signs in light of the miracles of Elijah and Elisha. They have generally concluded that the resulting prophetic christology functions as a stepping-stone toward higher christologies. On the intertextual reading of this article, however, the prophetic christology relates to other christologies not as a stepping-stone but in terms of the theology of prophecy from Kings: the signs of Jesus validate his prophetic authority, and Jesus takes up not only the role of Elijah and Elisha but also the role of the prophets' God. In his collection of Buddhist miracle tales, the Records of Miraculous Recompense (Mingbao ji 冥報記), Tang Lin 唐臨 provided epilogues for most of his entries, documenting the sources and/or transmissions of stories that he had gathered over time. Situating these seemingly disparate, fragmentary paratexts in the context of the medieval "culture of informal storytelling," this essay analyzes the range and composition of social networks as Tang Lin represents them in his epilogues. I then examine how his social networks, or his networks of informal storytelling, in the collection were embedded in the broader social world of the time. The case provides us with valuable glimpses into the dynamics of the culture of informal storytelling, especially its oral mode, and how it intersected with contemporaneous commemorative culture and lay Buddhist culture. These connections enable us to better understand the crucial roles that the culture of informal storytelling played in the medieval period before the advent of printing and other mass media. Contemporary Christianity is fascinated with claimed supernatural manifestations. The Bible speaks about signs and wonders. How does the biblical evidence inform the contemporary fascination? The appearance of signs and wonders in the Bible centers around three pivotal periods, the exodus, the time of Jesus and the apostles, and the eschaton. While in the first they are the result of divine intervention, in the eschaton they are associated with the activities of antigod powers. Similarly, Revelation speaks of end time signs that will be performed by the false prophet. The purpose of such is to deceive if possible God's people. This sobering picture calls for spiritual vigilance towards any claims of supernatural manifestations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article examines the use of month names and numbering in the Book of Esther, specifically focusing on the shift from numbered months to Babylonian-named months in Esther 9:1. It suggests that this change reflects the book's diasporic Jewish ideology, which prioritizes loyalty to the Persian Empire over a Jerusalem-centric worldview. The article also explores the ideological background of numbered months in Hebrew Scriptures and highlights the contrast between this ideology and the diaspora ideology expressed in Esther. Additionally, the author discusses different scholarly perspectives on the dating and interpretation of the Book of Esther, with the use of Babylonian month names seen as either an expression of Jewish particularism or a critique of Persian Jews' adaptation to diasporic life. One of the miracles of the Qurʾān is the rhetorical aspect, which is closely related to words in terms of appearance and structure. Anastrophe is a rhetorical technique the use of which helps to make the words more expressive and better understood by the audience. Such a technique, in addition to being systematic and principled, creates beautiful style, and adds to the eloquence of the phrasing. Considering the importance of this style, this descriptive-analytical research aims to investigate the rhetorical reasons of anastrophe in Surah Ar-Rum from two perspectives of syntax and order, to illuminate the effect of this style on the meaning of words. The result of this research indicates that the most important rhetorical device of anastrophe is related to meaning so that behind the rearranging of the words, both in terms of syntax and order, there is some meaning that the speaker has intended to convey in this way in order to highlight it. Therefore, anastrophe not only has an important effect in increasing the lexical meaning and beauty, but is also used to impart a specific intention and purpose. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

While we hear more and more about the miracle of so-called 'neural' machine translation (NMT), all too little attention is paid to discourse on NMT. In this paper I analyse this discourse focusing on the hype around artificial intelligence in general and machine translation in particular, including the now often mentioned generative AI (based on generative pre-trained models, GPT). how it is actually used and how users perceive it. As a counterpoint to these analyses, I then focus on actual uses on NMT. Who are the users of machine translation systems today, and what are their practices? What do they know about machine translation and how do they perceive it? Based on data available in the literature and from recent surveys, I seek to define the current uses of NMT, in order to show the advantages that certain well-supervised uses can present, as well as the risks incurred by unsophisticated users. These risks are linked with well described effects of influence, persuasion and sometimes disinformation, in order to show that the risks incurred are still considerable but that what users need most is long-term projections, ethical discussions and AI commons. The article discusses the book "Monastic Ecological Wisdom: A Living Tradition" by Samuel Torvend, which explores the ways in which Christian monasticism, particularly that of Saint Benedict and Benedictine communities, values and nurtures the natural environment. The book highlights the long-standing Benedictine values and practices that can inform contemporary efforts to address the ecological crisis. It also discusses the influence of Pope Francis' encyclical on Care for our Common Home and the request to designate medieval monastic foundations as World Heritage Sites due to their harmonious integration with the natural environment. The book is organized into seven chapters that delve into topics such as early Christian resistance to imperial domination, Benedict's rejection of ecologically destructive imperial values, and Benedict's connection to nature. The author concludes that there is a significant amount of ecological wisdom expressed in liturgical, sacramental, and monastic values and practices, which are rooted in love for God, love for neighbor, and care for the natural world. This work introduces a large dataset comprising impulse responses of spatially distributed sources within a plane parallel to a planar microphone array. The dataset, named MIRACLE, encompasses 856,128 single-channel impulse responses and includes four different measurement scenarios. Three measurement scenarios were conducted under anechoic conditions. The fourth scenario includes an additional specular reflection from a reflective panel. The source positions were obtained by uniformly discretizing a rectangular source plane parallel to the microphone for each scenario. The dataset contains three scenarios with a spatial resolution of 23 mm at two different source-plane-to-array distances, as well as a scenario with a resolution of 5 mm for the shorter distance. In contrast to existing room impulse response datasets, the accuracy of the provided source location labels is assessed and additional metadata, such as the directivity of the loudspeaker used for excitation, is provided. The MIRACLE dataset can be used as a benchmark for data-driven modelling and interpolation methods as well as for various acoustic machine learning tasks, such as source separation, localization, and characterization. Two timely applications of the dataset are presented in this work: the generation of microphone array data for data-driven source localization and characterization tasks and data-driven model order reduction. RELICS , *DUST , *LITURGIES , *LITURGICS , *MIDDLE Ages , *PRESS relations - Abstract
Liturgy was the perfect and unparalleled medium for public relations in the Middle Ages, and when it came to relics, it could transform any stone, bone, or a piece of wood into an object worthy of devotion. This article revolves around the activating force of the relics of Mary Magdalene in medieval France. It examines two liturgies—from Vézelay and from Saint-Maximin in Provence—honouring the saint, representing two distinct responses whose character reflects the priorities of the communities that produced them and the agendas that set them in motion. Liturgy was accorded a special role in bolstering the claims of Provence over the corporeal presence of Mary Magdalene in its midst, with liturgists adopting a more audacious and unreserved vocabulary to validate these claims over those of Vézelay. The article discusses the theological and pastoral problems that arise from the biblical accounts of miraculous healings and how they perpetuate stereotypes about disability. Different models of disability are presented and it is argued that the hope of disabled individuals is linked to the recognition of their agency and the creation of inclusive sociopolitical spaces. The excessive focus on medical systems and medical models of disability in the United States is questioned, and the relationship between disability and healing miracles in the Scriptures is reflected upon. The importance of recognizing disabled individuals as sources of wisdom and agency is highlighted, and the focus is on reclaiming presence, agency, advocacy, and interdependent power in political, social, and ecclesial spaces. Key Clinical Message: Stent thrombosis is a serious complication with high morbidity and mortality rates resulting in cardiac death or nonfatal myocardial infarction that occurs following stent placement during percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). Stent underexpansion or malapposition are avoidable risk factors for stent thrombosis. Sufficient postdilation should be considered to mitigate this risk, especially with the guidance of intravascular ultrasound (IVUS). We present the case of a 60‐year‐old man developing a thrombotic lesion inside a stent 2 weeks after PCI for Non‐ST‐Segment Elevation Myocardial Infarction (NSTEMI), which was strongly related to stent underexpansion and malapposition. This case highlights the importance of IVUS in evaluating procedural success, particularly in assessing stent expansion and apposition. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article examines the enduring influence of Ancient Egyptian civilization in contemporary Arabic poetry, focusing on the ways poets incorporate elements of Egypt's ancient past into their literary works to preserve its memory for future generations. The subject, scope, and importance of this study lie in the exploration of the engagement with Ancient Egypt in various aspects, such as celebrating architectural marvels and acknowledging the wisdom and achievements of the civilization that once thrived along the Nile. The purpose of this research is to underscore the significance of the past in shaping present-day literary and cultural expressions, as well as the role of art in the construction of collective identity. The methodological framework involves a close analysis of selected poetic works, paying particular attention to the interplay between different cultural and historical influences, and demonstrating the vitality and adaptability of the Arab poetic tradition. In addition, this study highlights the implications of Ancient Egyptian civilization in contemporary Arabic poetry beyond the realm of literature, emphasizing the necessity of reevaluating the relationship between past and present and fostering a sense of continuity and connection with a shared history. The reliquary of Saint Hermión martyr arrived in the villa of Lagos in 1791. Since then, it has both been object of devotion –capable of granting miracles and “favors”– and given its name to the children of the families of Lagos. Between the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, it also established itself as a cultural object, source of legends, evocative of memory and an important reason for tourists to visit the city. GOD in Islam , *MIRACLES , *ENCYCLOPEDIAS & dictionaries , *PARABLES , *RHETORIC - Abstract
The rhetorical miraculousness clearly shows the magnificence of the Holy Quran. The inability of people to come up with a surah parable from its surahs is proven by visible and concrete evidence or a few verses of its verses. There is no wonder in that, for it is the words of Allah that the falsehood does not come from its hands nor from behind it, the download of the Mighty and the Hamid, and this distinguishes the rhetorical interpretation from other interpretations. It proves, with evidence and examples, that it is not possible to replace one word with another even if we search in all the Arabic dictionaries. The efforts of old and new scholars have been focused on showing some of the advantages of the Holy Quran, in terms of accuracy of expression, eloquence of systems, and excellence of sentence. The importance of this article lies in that it tries to collect a summary of what the early scholars wrote, and adds to it a special character and a distinctive sentence, that combines ease of expression and showing the beauty of Quranic expression. The article also tries to clarify a part of the rhetorical miracle of the Holy Quran, and it is concerned with highlighting the beauty of the Quranic systems by presenting some of the rhetorical indications in the verses that deny fear and sadness from the believers. As for the methodology of the study: It was by following the verses that denied fear and sadness from the believers, then studying them in rhetorical research; to show the miracle of the Quranic rhetoric in those verses; and then analyzing the formula that came in denying fear and sadness from the believers and clarifying what is in it of a rhetorical miracle; then we compared between that formula and the similar ones in the language; to show us the greatness and beauty of the Quranic system. The most important results are: Firstly, the believer, when he adheres to the law of Allah, Allah protects him from the harms of fear and sadness. Secondly denying fear and sadness from the believers is not specific to a time without another, for it is denied by the believers always. Thirdly every word in the negation formula that came in the Quran came appropriate for its place and no word or letter can take its place, and this is the concept of rhetorical miracle. WATERSHEDS , *GLOBAL warming , *MIRACLES , *ATMOSPHERIC models , *WATER shortages - Abstract
Unexpected and large spring precipitation events in the Colorado River Basin (CRB) that significantly alleviated an otherwise severe water shortage have been observed for over a century, such as the "Miracle May" of 2015. Although these events are often termed as "drought‐busting" or "miracle events" by water managers and the media, they have not been extensively researched or characterized. In this collaborative study with water managers across the CRB, we propose a definition for these hard‐to‐predict, ultra‐high precipitation events occurring during the late‐snow or snowmelt season. This characterization provides a framework for quantifying the frequency and intensity of extreme dry‐to‐wet springtime transitions. Despite limitations of climate model simulations due to uncertainties and the inhomogeneous qualities, our findings suggest that such transitions may become less frequent and less intense in a warming climate. In view of the potentially wetter but less‐snowy climate in the basin, the need for future research to more quantitatively assess these "miracle events" is emphasized. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Pulp Fiction (1994) prompts its viewer to consider the possibility of divine intervention and to explore the issue of divine justice to which that possibility gives rise. The anachronic plot presentation allows the audience to ponder Vincent and Jules' dispute about whether they experienced a miracle with the knowledge that Vincent will later be killed by Butch. This then prompts a review and reevaluation of Butch's character in relation to the gold watch for which he risks his life. Thus, the audience experiences an increasing capacity to make sense of the theological details that construct the characters, scenes, and dialogue. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

95. Nourishing Catholic souls in post‐Tridentine miracle narratives.

- Abstract
The period of Catholic reform witnessed the proliferation of printed works that narrated historical and contemporary miracles for the edification of a vernacular readership. This article examines the role of printed miracle narratives in stimulating interior Catholic devotional life through close examination of three Italian vernacular collections printed in Italy between 1587 and 1597. Previous studies have focused on miracle stories where the resolution or prevention of earthly suffering in the forms of illness, miscarriages of justice, or accidents was the main event. Such narratives were designed to shape their readers' understanding of the culture of the miraculous and its relevance for their lives. This article takes a different approach to the role of the miraculous in early modern Catholicism by bringing narratives that had spiritual rather than physical outcomes to the centre of study. By bringing into focus the diversity of narratives compiled in miracle collections, it argues that stories also provided readers with opportunities to examine and tend to the state of their interior religious lives. This article offers a fresh perspective on the messages that early modern Catholics received about the value of the miraculous for their lives. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

RELIGIOUS tourism , *RELIGIOUS experience , *PILGRIMS & pilgrimages , *RELIGIOUS studies , *MIRACLES , *K-means clustering - Abstract
The present study, focused on pilgrimages as part of religious tourism, aimed to achieve the following objectives: Identify the motivations of the demand for religious tourism focused on pilgrimages; analyze the segmentation of the demand; identify the relationship between demand segments with satisfaction and loyalty; and establish the sociodemographic aspects that characterize demand segments. The study was conducted during the Pilgrimage of the Christ of Miracles in Lima, Peru. The sample was taken on-site from 384 tourists. The statistical techniques used were factor analysis and the k-means clustering method. The results reveal five motivational dimensions: Religious Experience, Belief Experience, Escape, Touristic Experience, and Shopping. Three attendee segments were also identified: Believers, related to belief experience; Religious, related to religious experience; and Passive, tourists with low motivations. The Religious segment had the highest satisfaction and loyalty levels among these groups. Sociodemographic differences were also found in the demand segments. The findings will contribute to management guidelines for destination administrators with religious events and provide insights into academic literature. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper attempts to outline the miracle discussions that show up intermittently in the CTNS/VO project. The project's main purpose focuses on how and in what ways God could act in a non-miraculous manner in nature and history rather than through God's miraculous interventionist activities. Nevertheless, it is worthwhile to cover the miraculous in light of this project, as special divine action and miracles are conceptually interwoven in the sense that the extraordinary divine actions could be included within the larger range of God's special providence. Thus, several relevant arguments concerning the miraculous in the project need to be addressed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

PROPHECY , *FREETHINKERS , *RATIONALISTS , *REASON - Abstract
Abū Bakr Muḥammad bin Zakariyyā' al-Rāzī (865–925) is generally known as a freethinker who argued against prophecy and revealed religion based on arguments from fairness of God and rationality. Recently, scholars have argued that Razi was not as radical as the general interpretation takes him to be. Both the freethinker and conservative interpretations seem well-supported based on difference bodies of evidence. However, the evidence is based on secondhand reports. In this paper I argue there is an interpretation of prophecy which is supported by primary sources and can reconcile these putatively contradictory positions. Under my interpretation Razi allows for prophecy based on the rationality of moral deference in certain circumstances. In this picture one function of prophets is to act as moral experts for deference. This interpretation provides a synthesis of the freethinker and conservative views. Razi is conservative in having room for prophecy because of his dualist nature of humanity, and Razi is still a freethinker who values reason above all, because moral expertise requires excellent command of reason. It's a mistake to afflict upon on our best theories a single, uniform interpretation meant to apply in all circumstance. It's a mistake because it impedes the capacity of those theories to function as science. To refrain from the mistake is to adopt the locavore hypothesis: the same theory can merit different interpretations in different circumstances. Using quantum mechanics as an example, I argue for the locavore hypothesis, and examine its consequences not only for the scientific realism debate but also for our notion of scientific understanding. COMPOUND words , *SEMANTICS , *MIRACLES , *LEXEME , *CULTS - Abstract
The article analyses 45 compound words from the Slavonic translation of the Miracles of St. Demetrius of Thessalonica by John Stavracius, originated in the 13th century. It has survived in only two known copies, both 15 th.-century autographs by the remarkable Balkan scribe Vladislav the Grammarian. The lexemes are considered in terms of word formation and semasiology, being distributed on a nest basis by recurrent components. The importance of the Greek original for the emergence of rare composite calques subordinated to the theme of miracles and their ideological messages is demonstrated. The collection is one of the most recent in its period of origin, reflecting the flexible adaptation of the cult of St. Demetrius to the new historical conditions of the Ottoman invasion.
