61. Do Ethics and Values Play a Role in Virtual Education? A Study on the Perception of Students and Teachers

Abstract

Learning in virtual environments is an ethical experience. This research aimed to understand the ethical experience of a virtual learning environment from the perspective of university students and their teachers. The participants were 205 higher education students from different Spanish-speaking countries (Colombia, Argentina, Mexico, Ecuador, and Spain) and 30 teachers who acted as tutors in virtual education. The study used a design-based research method and quantitative instruments for the collection of empirical data. The data analysis showed that students and teachers perceive responsibility, commitment, and respect as values inherent to virtual education, and may have a moderately different ethical experience based on these values. With this research, we intend to contribute to a better understanding of the coexistence of human beings in virtual learning environments. We argue that it is necessary to question or rethink the pedagogical paradigms that guide virtual education, endowing them with humanity, and recognizing their ethical dimension as funda-mental.

Abstract

Periodic tilings can store information if individual tiles are decorated to lower their symmetry. Truchet tilings - the broad family of space-filling arrangements of such tiles - offer an efficient mechanism of visual data storage related to that used in barcodes and QR codes. Here, we show that the crystalline metal-organic framework [OZn$_4$][1,3-benzenedicarboxylate]$_3$ (TRUMOF-1) is an atomic-scale realisation of a complex three-dimensional Truchet tiling. Its crystal structure consists of a periodically-arranged assembly of identical zinc-containing clusters connected uniformly in a well-defined but disordered fashion to give a topologically aperiodic microporous network. We suggest that this unusual structure emerges as a consequence of geometric frustration in the chemical building units from which it is assembled.

Abstract

We complete the study of the model introduced in [11]. It is a two-color urn model with multiple drawing and random (non-balanced) time-dependent reinforcement matrix. The number of sampled balls at each time-step is random. We identify the exact rates at which the number of balls of each color grows to infinity and define two strongly consistent estimators for the limiting reinforcement averages. Abstract

We investigate the number of steps taken by three variants of the Euclidean algorithm on average over Farey fractions. We show asymptotic formulae for these averages restricted to the interval $(0,1/2)$, establishing that they behave differently on $(0,1/2)$ than they do on $(1/2,1)$. These results are tightly linked with the distribution of lengths of certain continued fraction expansions as well as the distribution of the involved partial quotients. As an application, we prove a conjecture of Ito on the distribution of values of Dedekind sums. The main argument is based on earlier work of Zhabitskaya, Ustinov, Bykovski\u{i} and others, ultimately dating back to Heilbronn, relating the quantities in question to counting solutions to a certain system of Diophantine inequalities. Abstract

The city metaphor for visualizing software systems in 3D has been widely explored and has led to many diverse implementations and approaches. Common among all approaches is a focus on the software artifacts, while the aspects pertaining to the data and information (stored both in databases and files) used by a system are seldom taken into account. We present M3triCity, an interactive web application whose goal is to visualize object-oriented software systems, their evolution, and the way they access data and information. We illustrate how it can be used for program comprehension and evolution analysis of data-intensive software systems. Abstract

The technological advances of medicine in recent decades have made it possible to extend the life of critically ill patients even in resource poor countries in Sub-Saharan Africa. Modern biomedical technology restores some patients to health but also allows others to live in a severely disabled stage and prolongs the dying process for others. The increasing role of technology in prolonging life in severely debilitated patients, with no possibility of restoring health, is on a collision course with moral norms in many societies. Patients have a limited say on when to initiate these complex treatments and when to stop them in the absence of advance directives or living wills. Such directives may not be easily accommodated by African cultures where death is accepted as the will of God and rarely discussed until it arrives. To sustain the ‘life’ of a terminally ill individual with no chance of recovery on a machine at a high cost to an impoverished family and community could be considered socially unjustifiable. The right of the patient to decline treatment when the quality of life becomes untenable contin-ues to meet resistance from religious doctrine and cultural objections. These deep ethical and philosophical questions with no easy answers may continue to haunt individuals, families, institutions and communi-ties for generations to come.

Abstract

According to the standard cosmological scenario, the large galaxies that we observe today have reached their current mass via mergers with smaller galaxy satellites (Moore et al.1999). This hierarchical process is expected to take place on smaller scales for the satellites themselves, that should build-up from the accretion of smaller building blocks (D'Onghia & Lake 2008). The best chance we have to test this prediction is by looking at the most massive satellite of the Milky Way (MW): the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). Smaller galaxies have been revealed to orbit around the LMC (Erkal & Belokurov 2020, Patel et al. 2020), but so far the only evidence for mutual interactions is related to the orbital interplay with the nearby Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC), which is the most massive LMC satellite. In this work, we report the likely discovery of a past merger event that the LMC experienced with a galaxy with a low star formation efficiency and likely having a stellar mass similar to those of dwarf spheroidal galaxies. This former LMC satellite has now completely dissolved, depositing the old globular cluster (GC) NGC 2005 as part of its debris. This GC is the only surviving witness of this ancient merger event, recognizable through its peculiar chemical composition. This discovery is the observational evidence that the process of hierarchical assembly has worked also in shaping our closest satellites., Comment: 32 pages, 7 figures, 3 table. Abstract

Chemical tagging is a powerful tool to reveal the origin of stars and globular clusters (GCs), especially when dynamics alone cannot provide robust answers. So far, mostly $\alpha$- and neutron capture elements have been used to distinguish stars born in the Milky Way (MW) from those born in external environments such as that of dwarf galaxies. Here, instead, we use iron-peak elements abundances to investigate the origin of a sample of metal-rich globular clusters. By homogeneously analyzing high-resolution UVES spectra of giant stars belonging to four metal-rich GCs (namely NGC 5927, NGC 6388, NGC 6441, NGC 6496), we find that while the $\alpha$-elements Si and Ca have similar abundance ratios for all the four GCs, and Ti and neutron capture elements (La, Ba and Eu) only show a marginal discrepancy, a stark difference is found when considering the abundances of some iron-peak elements (Sc, V and Zn). In particular, NGC 6388 and NGC 6441 have abundance ratios for these iron-peak elements significantly lower (by ~ 0.5 dex) than those measured in NGC 5927 and NGC 6496, which are clearly identified as born in-situ MW clusters through an analysis of their orbital properties. These measurements indicate that the environment in which these clusters formed is different, and provide robust evidence supporting an accreted origin from the same progenitor for NGC 6388 and NGC 6441., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures, 2 tables, accepted for publication in ApJ Letters

Abstract

We describe the outcome of a large international interlaboratory study of the measurement of particle number concentration of colloidal nanoparticles, project 10 of the technical working area 34, "Nanoparticle Populations" of the Versailles Project on Advanced Materials and Standards (VAMAS). A total of 50 laboratories delivered results for the number concentration of 30 nm gold colloidal nanoparticles measured using particle tracking analysis (PTA), single particle inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (spICP-MS), ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) light spectroscopy, centrifugal liquid sedimentation (CLS) and small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). The study provides quantitative data to evaluate the repeatability of these methods and their reproducibility in the measurement of number concentration of model nanoparticle systems following a common measurement protocol. We find that the population-averaging methods of SAXS, CLS and UV-Vis have high measurement repeatability and reproducibility, with between-labs variability of 2.6%, 11% and 1.4% respectively. However, results may be significantly biased for reasons including inaccurate material properties whose values are used to compute the number concentration. Particle-counting method results are less reproducibile than population-averaging methods, with measured between-labs variability of 68% and 46% for PTA and spICP-MS respectively. This study provides the stakeholder community with important comparative data to underpin measurement reproducibility and method validation for number concentration of nanoparticles.
