Abstract

A millimeter-scale Ioffe-Pritchard trap is used to achieve quantum degeneracy in Li-7. The trap employs freestanding copper coils integrated onto a direct-bond copper surface-electrode structure. The trap achieves a radial magnetic gradient of 420 G/cm, an axial oscillation frequency of 50 Hz, and a trap depth of 66 G with a 100 A drive current and 7 W total power dissipation.

Abstract

We report the most accurate measurement of the helium fine structure splitting. The 23P0-23P1 energy splitting is 29 616 949.7 +- 2.0 kHz. Laser saturation spectroscopy, heterodyne pure frequency determination, and fluorescence detection were combined in a novel experimental approach. The absence of external perturbing magnetic fields, used in earlier experiments, lends confidence to our determined value and allows us to discriminate between contradictory results previously reported. This result, when combined with expected advances in theory, should yield a new value of the fine structure alpha, which may help clarify a presently puzzling experimental situation.

Abstract

We report experimental evidence of the sympathetic cooling of K-39 with Rb-87 down to 1 mu K, obtained in a tight-confining magnetic trap. This allowed us to perform a direct measurement of the elastic cross section of K-39 below 50 mu K. The result obtained for the triplet scattering length, a(T)=-51(7) Bohr radii, agrees with previous results derived from photoassociation spectra and from Feshbach spectroscopy of K-40.

Abstract

Using a species-selective dipole potential, we create initially localized impurities and investigate their interactions with a majority species of bosonic atoms in a one-dimensional configuration during expansion. We find an interaction-dependent amplitude reduction of the oscillation of the impurities’ size with no measurable frequency shift, and study it as a function of the interaction strength. We discuss possible theoretical interpretations of the data. We compare, in particular, with a polaronic mass shift model derived following Feynman variational approach.

Abstract

We experimentally investigate the mix-dimensional scattering occurring when the collisional partners live in different dimensions. We employ a binary mixture of ultracold atoms and exploit a species-selective 1D optical lattice to confine only one atomic species in 2D. By applying an external magnetic field in proximity of a Feshbach resonance, we adjust the free-space scattering length to observe a series of resonances in mixed dimensions. Abstract

We experimentally and theoretically investigate the dynamics of two trapped condensates in a magnetostatic trap. The two condensates, being in different internal Zeeman state (F = 2, m = 2> and F = 2, m = 1>), experience external parabolic potentials that differ by both curvature and equilibrium position. The dynamics of the system, exhibiting large amplitude oscillations of the F = 2, m = 1> condensate, is affected in a profound manner by the periodical intercondensates collisions. In particular, we show that both an amplitude damping and a frequency shift occur. Measuring the former allows to study the elastic scattering, whose suppression is a manifestation of the Bose condensates superfluidity, while the latter gives access to the cross scattering length a[sub 21].
