55. Spatially weighted functional clustering of river network data

Abstract

Incorporating spatial covariance into clustering has previously been considered for functional data to identify groups of functions which are similar across space. However, in the majority of situations that have been considered until now the most appropriate metric has been Euclidean distance. Directed networks present additional challenges in terms of estimating spatial covariance due to their complex structure. Although suitable river network covariance models have been proposed for use with stream distance, where distance is computed along the stream network, these models have not been extended for contexts where the data are functional, as is often the case with environmental data. The paper develops a method of calculating spatial covariance between functions from sites along a river network and applies the measure as a weight within functional hierarchical clustering. Levels of nitrate pollution on the River Tweed in Scotland are considered with the aim of identifying groups of monitoring stations which display similar spatiotemporal characteristics.

Abstract

In the life sciences and beyond, new developments in science and technology and the creation of new social orders go hand in hand. In short, science and society are simultaneously and reciprocally coproduced and changed. Scientific research not only produces new knowledge and technological systems but also constitutes new forms of expertise and contributes to the emergence of new modes of living and new forms of exchange. These dynamic processes are tightly connected to significant redistributions of wealth and power, and they sometimes threaten and sometimes enhance democracy. Understanding these phenomena poses important intellectual and normative challenges: neither traditional social sciences nor prevailing modes of democratic governance have fully grappled with the deep and growing significance of knowledge-making in twenty-first century politics and markets. Building on new work in science and technology studies (STS), this book advances the systematic analysis of the coproduction of knowledge and power in contemporary societies. Using case studies in the new life sciences, supplemented with cases on informatics and other topics such as climate science, this book presents a theoretical framing of coproduction processes while also providing detailed empirical analyses and nuanced comparative work.

Abstract

Historical, philosophical and sociological studies of science have amply demonstrated that scientific change is not just about theory, but as much or even more about new epistemic objects and associated sensibilities. Change may be better understood if we analyze major and minor revolutions in science and the world as the result of chains of smaller changes in actual research practices, thinking and tinkering. Such small changes in research can be shown to resonate and tie up with one another and with elements and discursive repertoires available in wider culture. Detailed scrutiny of notebooks from working researchers, ethnography and other materials shows that scientific change does not come in one integrated revolutionary package and wholesale, nor does it arrive out of the blue, i.e. simply disregarding received views and ignoring existing knowledge and institutional structures. In hindsight, developments may be presented as breakthroughs, victories and discoveries, but that is another matter. That is how histories get made and presented in science and beyond, not how scientific change comes about or at best the retrospective part of it. This book is not about scientific accomplishments and breakthroughs as such but about the intimate ways in which knowledge production relates to social change. Or, to use the better-known phrasing: how knowledge and society are co-produced (Jasanoff 2004, 2005). In this chapter I shall discuss issues and themes that surface in several chapters or that apply to the collection as a whole. Reflecting on these themes in connection with the various chapters will, it is hoped, help to bring out once again the distinctive features of the idiom of co-production and its importance for making sense of the significant transformations and reconfigurations occurring in the world today. In so doing, the chapter aims to draw out co-production in a way that fully integrates the roles played by science and technology in such transformation as endogenous factors rather than coming in from some imaginary outside. The first section clarifies why I prefer to speak of sense and sensibility in discussing the virtues of the approach to co-production taken by the book’s authors. Subsequently, the second section describes this approach, which Jasanoff (2004) defined as the “interactional” perspective on co-production, in greater detail, and explores the preoccupation with institutions and institutional reconfiguration that is in my view distinctive for the approach. The third section reviews why the local and the global play a role in so many of the chapters. That such is the case should not surprise us, as many of the challenges that present themselves are global; yet they play out in local contexts. This not only invites the use of comparative approaches but also raises the question of how conceptions of “local” and “global” are themselves coproduced and what that implies analytically. Once we have discussed these wide-ranging aspects, we shall look at notions of (bio)constitutionalism, civic epistemology and sociotechnical imaginaries. I shall conclude with the politics of co-production.

58. Process optimisation to control the physico-chemical characteristics of biomimetic nanoscale hydroxyapatites prepared using wet chemical precipitation

Abstract

Hydroxyapatite nanoscale particles (nHA) were prepared by wet chemical precipitation using four different synthesis methods. Differences in physico-chemical properties including morphology, particle-size, and crystallinity were investigated following alteration of critical processing parameters. The nanoparticles were also studied using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy in attenuated total reflectance mode (FTIR-ATR), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) with energy dispersive X-ray (EDS) spectrometry. The results showed that the particles obtained were composed of nHA, with different morphologies and aspect ratios (1.5 to 4) and degrees of crystallinity (40% to 70% following calcination) depending on the different process parameters of the synthesis method used, such as temperature, ripening time and pH. This study demonstrated that relatively small adjustments to processing conditions of different wet chemical preparation methods significantly affect the morphological and chemical characteristics of nHA. For the predicable preparation of biomimetic nHA for specific applications, the selection of both production method and careful control of processing conditions are paramount.

Abstract

The earlier search at HERMES for narrow baryon states excited in quasireal photoproduction, decaying through the channel pKS0→pπ+π-, has been extended with improved decay-particle reconstruction, more advanced particle identification, and increased event samples. The structure observed earlier at an invariant mass of 1528 MeV shifts to 1522 MeV and the statistical significance drops to about 2σ for data taken with a deuterium target. The number of events above background is 68-31+98(stat)±13(sys). No such structure is observed in the hydrogen data set.

Standardized measures of motor ability confirm that children with SLI exhibit deficits in fine and gross motor skill, both simple and complex. These difficulties also extend to speech-motor ability, particularly with the control of their articulatory movements. Communicative gesturing, on the other hand, does not appear to be significantly impacted in SLI. Some of the latest studies reviewed in this paper have examined motor processes supported by procedural memory, which is argued to be impaired in SLI. The results of these studies indicate that children with SLI have difficulty with motor sequence learning, but may show deficits in other procedural motor processes as well. Despite significant progress with understanding the motor issues in SLI, future studies are needed to hone in on the nature of this impairment.

Contains fulltext : 139877.pdf (publisher's version ) (Closed access), Background: The Procedural Deficit Hypothesis (PDH) proposes that individuals with primary developmental language impairment (DLI) have a deficient procedural memory, compromising their syntactic abilities. Individuals with DLI may compensate for procedural memory deficits by engaging declarative memory for syntactic tasks. Arguments are part of the lexicon whereas adjuncts rely on syntactic processing. As a result, individuals with DLI may have unusual difficulty processing adjuncts. Alternatively, processing for adjuncts may be typical for individuals with DLI but show frequency effects, indicating compensatory use of declarative memory. Aims: Our goal was to test the predictions of the PDH by comparing argument and adjunct processing times for adults with and without DLI, and to seek evidence of compensatory use of declarative memory for adjunct processing. We further evaluated group performance on measures of visual procedural and declarative memory. Methods and procedures: Forty-four adults, 21 with DLI, completed a self-paced listening task, a procedural memory task, and a declarative memory task. The self-paced listening task tracked the word-by-word processing time for sentences that included prepositional phrases acting as arguments or adjuncts. We used regression analysis to determine effects of group membership and argument or adjunct status on processing times. Correlation analyses evaluated relationships between argument and adjunct frequency on processing times by group. Results and outcomes: We found no effect of group membership on the processing time for arguments and adjuncts in the self-paced listening task. Argument phrases were processed more easily by both groups. There were frequency effects for adjunct processing for the group with DLI, but not the group with typical language. We did not find the expected frequency effects for argument processing. The group with DLI also performed more poorly in both the procedural and declarative memory task

Abstract

International audience; PURPOSE: To compare local sine-wave modeling (SinMod) with harmonic phase analysis (HARP), for assessment of left ventricular (LV) circumferential strain (εcc) from tagged cardiovascular magnetic resonance images. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Mid-ventricular spatial modulation of magnetization was performed in 60 participants (15 each with hypertrophic, dilated or ischemic cardiomyopathy and 15 healthy controls) at 1.5 Tesla. Global and segmental peak transmural εcc were measured using HARP and SinMod. Repeated measurements were performed on 25% of examinations to assess observer variability. Effect of contrast was assessed in 10 additional patients. RESULTS: SinMod showed a high level of agreement with HARP for global εcc (mean difference -0.02, 95% limits of agreement -6.46 to 6.43%). Agreement was much lower for segmental εcc. Both methods showed excellent observer agreement for global εcc (intraclass correlation coefficient >0.75). Observer agreement for segmental εcc was also excellent with SinMod, but was significantly lower with HARP. Analysis time was significantly shorter using SinMod. Pre- and postcontrast εcc measurements were not significantly different using either technique, although postcontrast measurements showed greater variability with HARP. CONCLUSION: SinMod and HARP-based measurements of global εcc have a high level of agreement, but segmental agreement is substantially lower. SinMod has generally lower observer variability, is faster and is less affected by contrast, but requires further validation.

Abstract

The T2K experiment is a long baseline neutrino oscillation experiment. Its main goal is to measure the\ud last unknown lepton sector mixing angle y13 by observing ne appearance in a nm beam. It also aims to\ud make a precision measurement of the known oscillation parameters, Dm2\ud 23 and sin2\ud 2y23, via nm\ud disappearance studies. Other goals of the experiment include various neutrino cross-section measurements and sterile neutrino searches. The experiment uses an intense proton beam generated by the\ud J-PARC accelerator in Tokai, Japan, and is composed of a neutrino beamline, a near detector complex\ud (ND280), and a far detector (Super-Kamiokande) located 295 km away from J-PARC. This paper\ud provides a comprehensive review of the instrumentation aspect of the T2K experiment and a summary\ud of the vital information for each subsystem.

Abstract

Single-spin asymmetries were investigated in inclusive electroproduction of charged pions and kaons from transversely polarized protons at the HERMES experiment. The asymmetries were studied as a function of the azimuthal angle psi about the beam direction between the target-spin direction and the hadron production plane, the transverse hadron momentum P-T relative to the direction of the incident beam, and the Feynman variable x(F). The sin psi* amplitudes are positive for pi(+) and K+ slightly negative for pi(-) and consistent with zero for K-, with particular P-T but weak x(F) dependences. Especially large asymmetries are observed for two small subsamples of events, where also the scattered electron was recorded by the spectrometer. (C) 2013 The Authors. Published by Elsevier B.V. Abstract

Azimuthal asymmetries in exclusive electroproduction of real photons are measured for the first time with respect to transverse target polarisation, providing new constraints on Generalized Parton Distributions. From the same data set on a hydrogen target, new results for the beam-charge asymmetry are also extracted with better precision than those previously reported. By comparing model calculations with measured asymmetries attributed to the interference between the deeply virtual Compton scattering and Bethe-Heitler processes, a model-dependent constraint is obtained on the total angular momenta carried by up and down quarks in the nucleon.

Abstract

Evidence for a narrow baryon state is found in quasi-real photoproduction on a deuterium target through the decay channel pK(S)(0) → ppi(+)pi(-). A peak is observed in the pK(S)(0) invariant mass spectrum at 1528 +/- 2.6(stat) +/- 2.1(syst) MeV. Depending on the background model, the naive statistical significance of the peak is 4-6 standard deviations and its width may be somewhat larger than the experimental resolution of sigma = 4.3-6.2 MeV. This state may be interpreted as the predicted S = +1 exotic Theta(+)(uudd (s) over bar) pentaquark baryon. No signal for an hypothetical Theta(++) baryon was observed in the pK(+) invariant mass distribution. The absence of such a signal indicates that an isotensor Theta is excluded and an isovector Theta is unlikely.

Abstract

Double-spin asymmetries in the cross section of electroproduction of rho /sup 0/ and phi mesons on the proton and deuteron are measured at the HERMES experiment. The photoabsorption asymmetry in exclusive rho /sup 0/ electroproduction on the proton exhibits a positive tendency. This is consistent with theoretical predictions that the exchange of an object with unnatural parity contributes to exclusive rho /sup 0/ electroproduction by transverse photons. The photoabsorption asymmetry on the deuteron is found to be consistent with zero. Double-spin asymmetries in rho /sup 0/ and phi meson electroproduction by quasireal photons were also found to be consistent with zero; the asymmetry in the case of the phi meson is compatible with a theoretical prediction which involves ss knockout from the nucleon.

Abstract

Spin-dependent lepton-nucleon scattering data have been used to investigate the validity of the concept of quark-hadron duality for the spin asymmetry A1. Longitudinally polarized positrons were scattered off a longitudinally polarized hydrogen target for values of Q2 between 1.2 and 12 GeV2 and values of W2 between 1 and 4 GeV/2. The average double-spin asymmetry in the nucleon resonance region is found to agree with that measured in deep-inelastic scattering at the same values of the Bjorken scaling variable x. This finding implies that the description of A1 in terms of quark degrees of freedom is valid also in the nucleon resonance region for values of Q2 above 1.6 GeV2.

Abstract

The influence of the nuclear medium on lepto-production of hadrons was studied in the HERMES experiment at DESY in semi- inclusive deep-inelastic scattering of 27.6 GeV positrons off deuterium, nitrogen and krypton targets. The differential multiplicity for krypton relative to that of deuterium has been measured for the first time for various identified hadrons (pi(+), pi(-), pi(0), K+, K-, p and (p) over bar) as a function of the virtual photon energy v, the fraction z of this energy transferred to the hadron, and the hadron transverse momentum squared p(t)(2). The multiplicity ratio is strongly reduced in the nuclear medium at low v and high z, with significant differences among the various hadrons. The distribution of the hadron transverse momentum is broadened towards high p(t)(2) in the nuclear medium, in a manner resembling the Cronin effect previously observed in collisions of heavy ions and protons with nuclei.

Abstract

The Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn (GDH) sum rule connects the anomalous contribution to the magnetic moment of the target nucleus with an energy-weighted integral of the difference of the helicity- dependent photoabsorption cross sections. Originally conceived for real photons, the GDH integral can be generalised to the case of photons with virtuality Q(2). For spin-1/2 targets such as the nucleon, it then represents the non-perturbative limit of the first moment Gamma(1) of the spin structure function g(1)(x,Q(2)) in deep inelastic scattering (DIS). The data collected by HERMES with a deuterium target are presented together with a re-analysis of previous measurements on the proton. This provides an unprecedented and complete measurement of the generalised GDH integral for photon-virtuality ranging over 1.2 lt Q(2) lt 12.0 GeV2 and for photon-nucleon invariant mass squared W-2 ranging over I lt W2 lt 45 GeV2. thus covering simultaneously the nucleon-resonance and the deep inelastic scattering regions. These data allow the study of the Q(2)- dependence of the full GDH integral, which is sensitive to both the Q(2)-evolution of the resonance form factors and contributions of higher twist. The contribution of the nucleon- resonance region is seen to decrease rapidly with increasing Q(2). The DIS contribution is sizeable over the full measured range, even down to the lowest measured Q(2). As expected, at higher Q(2) the data are found to be in agreement with previous measurements of the first moment of g(1). From data on the deuteron and proton, the GDH integral for the neutron has been derived and the proton-neutron difference evaluated. This difference is found to satisfy the fundamental Bjorken sum rule at Q(2) = 5 GeV2.

Abstract

Single-spin asymmetries have been measured for semi-inclusive electroproduction of $\pi^+$, $\pi^-$, $\pi^0$ and $K^+$ mesons in deep-inelastic scattering off a longitudinally polarised deuterium target. The asymmetries appear in the distribution of the hadrons in the azimuthal angle $\phi$ around the virtual photon direction, relative to the lepton scattering plane. Abstract

Spin transfer in deep-inelastic Lambda electroproduction has been studied with the HERMES detector using the 27.6 GeV polarized positron beam in the DESY HERA storage ring. For an average fractional energy transfer [z]=0.45, the longitudinal spin transfer from the virtual photon to the Lambda has been extracted. The spin transfer along the Lambda momentum direction is found to be 0.11+or-0.17(stat)+or-0.03(syst); similar values are found for other possible choices for the longitudinal spin direction of the Lambda . This result is the most precise value obtained to date from deep-inelastic scattering with charged lepton beams, and is sensitive to polarized up quark fragmentation to hyperon states. The experimental result is found to be in general agreement with various models of the Lambda spin content, and is consistent with the assumption of helicity conservation in the fragmentation process

Abstract

The influence of the nuclear medium on the production of charged hadrons in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering has been studied by the HERMES experiment at DESY using a 27.5 GeV positron beam. The differential multiplicity of charged hadrons and identified charged pions from nitrogen relative to that from deuterium has been measured as a function of the virtual photon energy nu and the fraction z of this energy transferred to the hadron. There are observed substantial reductions of the multiplicity ratio R/sub M//sup h/ at low nu and at high z, both of which are well described by a gluon-bremsstrahlung model of hadronization. A significant difference of the nu -dependence of R/sub M//sup h/ is found between positive and negative hadrons. This is interpreted in terms of a difference between the formation times of protons and pions, using a phenomenological model to describe the nu - and z-dependence of R/sub M//sup h/.

Abstract

Evidence for a positive longitudinal double-spin asymmetry = 0.24 +-0.11 (stat) +-0.02 (syst) in the cross section for exclusive diffractive rho^0(770) vector meson production in polarised lepton-proton scattering was observed by the HERMES experiment. The longitudinally polarised 27.56 GeV HERA positron beam was scattered off a longitudinally polarised pure hydrogen gas target. The average invariant mass of the photon-proton system has a value of = 4.9 GeV, while the average negative squared four-momentum of the virtual photon is = 1.7 GeV^2. Abstract

Measurements of the individual multiplicities of pi /sup +/, pi /sup -/ and pi /sup 0/ produced in the deep-inelastic scattering of 27.5 GeV positrons on hydrogen are presented. The average charged pion multiplicity is the same as for neutral pions, up to z approximately= 0.7, where z is the fraction of the energy transferred in the scattering process carried by the pion. This result (below z approximately= 0.7) is consistent with isospin invariance. The total energy fraction associated with charged and neutral pions is 0.51 +or- 0.01(stat.) +or- 0.08 (syst.) and 0.26 +or- 0.01(stat.) +or- 0.04(syst.), respectively. For fixed z, the measured multiplicities depend on both the negative squared four momentum transfer Q/sup 2/ and the Bjorken variable x. The observed dependence on Q/sup 2/ agrees qualitatively with the expected behaviour based on NLO-QCD evolution, while the dependence on x is consistent with that of previous data after corrections have been made for the expected Q/sup 2/-dependence.

Abstract

Precise measurement of neutrino beam direction and intensity was achieved based on a new concept with modularized neutrino detectors. INGRID (Interactive Neutrino GRID) is an on-axis near detector for the T2K long baseline neutrino oscillation experiment. INGRID consists of 16 identical modules arranged in horizontal and vertical arrays around the beam center. The module has a sandwich structure of iron target plates and scintillator trackers. INGRID directly monitors the muon neutrino beam profile center and intensity using the number of observed neutrino events in each module. The neutrino beam direction is measured with accuracy better than 0.4 mrad from the measured profile center. The normalized event rate is measured with 4% precision.
