This work studies the distribution of warehouses and distribution centers (W&DCs) in California and analyzes their potential relationships with disadvantaged communities (DACs). Through aggregated spatial analyses and econometric modeling, the research compares the concentration of W&DCs in five metropolitan planning organizations (MPOs) in California. The analyses show that the weighted geometric centers of W&DCs have shifted slightly toward city central areas in all five MPOs in the last few years, contrasting to the logistics sprawl trends evidenced in previous research. In the Bay Area and Southern California, W&DCs are more prevalent in areas with higher pollution burden, according to the CalEnviroScreen (CS) score. In Southern California, the study analyzes disaggregate industrial real estate data of 49,697 property transactions (properties sold) between 1989 and 2018. On average, the size of the facilities transacted have decreased, especially for those closer to the urban center. These results are confirmed using parametric and non-parametric data analyses. During recent years, smaller and closer (to the urban core) facilities represent the largest share in the transactions, consistent with the trends in e-commerce and its associated distribution requirements. Moreover, the data show a disproportionate sitting of facilities in areas where DACs reside. The paper ends with a discussion of policy and planning recommendations.

This study aims to comprehensively investigate the interrelationships among exercise intensity preference, tolerance, competence satisfaction, competence frustration, and exercise intentions within the fitness domain. The research involved 114 participants aged 18 to 59 years (M = 33.23; SD = 10.542), with an average height of 166.02 cm (SD = 15.856) and weight of 68.02 kg (SD = 13.658). The path analysis revealed positive correlations among constructs, except for the link between exercise intensity tolerance and competence satisfaction. Notably, exercise intensity preference positively related to competence satisfaction (β = 0.20, CI90% = 0.12, 0.40), while both preference and tolerance were negatively linked to competence frustration (preference: β = −0.27, CI90% = −0.44, 0.03; tolerance: β = −0.17, CI90% = −0.03, 0.24). Competence satisfaction (β = 0.37, CI90% = 0.13, 0.34) and competence frustration (β = −0.29, CI90% = −0.48, −0.09) significantly influenced exercise intentions. An indirect effect existed between exercise intensity preference and intentions (β = 0.11, CI90% = 0.03, 0.21), contrasting with the lack of such effect for intensity tolerance (β = 0.05, CI90% = −0.01, 0.14). Intentions explained 16% of the variance. In conclusion, this study underscores the intricate connections between exercise intensity traits and intentions, shedding light on factors influencing individuals’ exercise persistence.

Esta revisão narrativa tem como objetivo examinar as evidências atuais que suportam a importância do exercício físico e o papel do técnico de exercício físico como promotor de educação para a cidadania, da aptidão física e o seu impacto no desempenho das atividades de vida diária e, por conseguinte, da qualidade de vida de indivíduos com Dificuldade Intelectual e Desenvolvimental. Várias questões são elencadas, de modo a perceber as razões para as elevadas taxas de sedentarismo nesta população, o porquê da escassez de estudos experimentais, quem são os intervenientes na avaliação, prescrição e condução dessas atividades, qual a formação dos intervenientes e que cuidados devem ter com a referida população, no qual, através da uma reflexão suportada pela evidência científica, tentar-se-á dar resposta. Em termos de resultados é clara necessidade do mercado de técnicos de exercício físico com formação de base na área das ciências do desporto e específica em atividades físicas adaptadas, no desenrolar de funções, tarefas e atividades com indivíduos com Dificuldade Intelectual e Desenvolvimental, seja em contexto de ensino regular, de fitness ou modalidade desportiva e, consequentemente, promotores de qualidade de vida em indivíduos com Dificuldade Intelectual e Desenvolvimental.

Estudiamos en este trabajo un relieve funerario egipcio del Museo Arqueológico Nacional de Madrid (en adelante MAN), n.º inv. 2001/110/2, especialmente sus características artísticas y epigráficas. El texto nos informa de que se trata de un «escriba real, jefe de los médicos». Mediante la imagen sabemos que, además, fue merecedor del Oro del Honor. Nuestro propósito es intentar conocer si existen otros documentos sobre este personaje, y asignar al relieve una cronología.

Background: BFSP1 (beaded filament structural protein 1) is a plasma membrane, Aquaporin 0 (AQP0/MIP)-associated intermediate filament protein expressed in the eye lens. BFSP1 is myristoylated, a post-translation modification that requires caspase cleavage at D433. Bioinformatic analyses suggested that the sequences 434–452 were α-helical and amphipathic. Methods and Results: By CD spectroscopy, we show that the addition of trifluoroethanol induced a switch from an intrinsically disordered to a more α-helical conformation for the residues 434–467. Recombinantly produced BFSP1 fragments containing this amphipathic helix bind to lens lipid bilayers as determined by surface plasmon resonance (SPR). Lastly, we demonstrate by transient transfection of non-lens MCF7 cells that these same BFSP1 C-terminal sequences localise to plasma membranes and to cytoplasmic vesicles. These can be co-labelled with the vital dye, lysotracker, but other cell compartments, such as the nuclear and mitochondrial membranes, were negative. The N-terminal myristoylation of the amphipathic helix appeared not to change either the lipid affinity or membrane localisation of the BFSP1 polypeptides or fragments we assessed by SPR and transient transfection, but it did appear to enhance its helical content. Conclusions: These data support the conclusion that C-terminal sequences of human BFSP1 distal to the caspase site at G433 have independent membrane binding properties via an adjacent amphipathic helix.

Objectives: This study aimed to examine the relationship between age, body mass index, muscle strength, and balance in physically active, aged adults. Methods: Eighty-five participants were recruited for this study, having an average age of 70.31 years (SD = 9.90), ranging from 50 to 92 years. Twenty-six (30.6%) participants were male and fifty-nine (69.4%) were female. The participants had an average body mass index of 27.30 kg/m2 (SD = 3.62), ranging from 20.32 to 38.58 kg/m2. Participants undertook the Timed-Up and Go to test balance, and the chair-stand test to assess lower body strength. Hierarchical regression analyses were conducted. Three models (Model 1, 2, and 3) were tested to assess their relationships with balance: M1—Lower body muscle strength; M2—Lower body muscle strength and body mass index; M3—Lower body muscle strength, body mass index, and age. Results: All hierarchical models displayed significant variance. The third model explained 50.9% of the variance in dynamic balance, [F(3, 81) = 27.94, p < 0.001, R = 0.71, Ra2 = 0.51]. The difference in Ra2 between the first, second, and third models was statistically significant (p < 0.05). Age, body mass index, and lower body muscle strength had significant (p < 0.05) correlations with balance. In terms of the significant impact of each predictor, age had the strongest association with balance (p < 0.05). Conclusions: The results are useful to understand mechanisms or diagnose people at risk of fall.

Background: abdominal vascular trauma is a challenge for the surgeon. Vascular control is a sine qua non condition in patients who receive surgical intervention against this lethal pathology, where visceral mobilization maneuvers are a key tool in treatment. Objective: to explain the visceral mobilization maneuvers that can help the surgeon against abdominal vascular trauma. Methods: a search of the Scopus, Medline, Cochrane, Hinari and Redalyc databases was performed using the descriptors: vascular trauma, abdomen, maneuvers, visceral mobilization. Results: visceral mobilization maneuvers to be taken into account in abdominal vascular trauma were addressed with an explanation of the main technical steps in each of them. Conclusions: the knowledge and application of visceral mobilization maneuvers constitute a useful tool in the treatment of patients with abdominal vascular trauma. Existem diversos benefícios através da realização de programas de exercício físico (EF) em indivíduos com Dificuldade Intelectual e Desenvolvimental (DID), no entanto a literatura apresenta uma escassez na implementação e um reduzido número de estudos com metodologias e tipos de treino muito diversos. Intervenções de curto prazo, número reduzido de estudos longitudinais, lacunas metodológicas e métodos de treino inapropriados, dificultam conclusões mais explícitas e consensuais ao nível da prescrição e dos seus resultados. Contudo, os programas de EF, em particular, o treino da força (TF) que tem sido associado à diminuição do risco de aparecimento de doenças cardiovasculares e metabólicas, pode ser uma mais-valia para o indivíduo com DID, atendendo à prevalência de diversas comorbilidades, nomeadamente hipertensão, colesterol e diabetes tipo II. O presente estudo tem por objetivo identificar os aspetos fundamentais e estruturantes para a prescrição de TF, nomeadamente os métodos de avaliação, intensidade, duração, frequência, exercícios adequados e a sua relação com os resultados, através da metodologia com recurso à revisão narrativa, partindo da caracterização de vários programas de TF implementados em indivíduos com DID. Os resultados são apresentados sob a forma de recomendações para a avaliação e prescrição de programas de TF, na população com DID. En el presente trabajo estudiamos dos cuencos de bronce del Museo Arqueológico Nacional (Madrid) procedentes de dos contextos culturales muy distintos (Irán y Nubia) y fechados en dos cronologías diferentes (primer y último cuarto del I milenio a. C., respectivamente) que tienen en común dos cosas: 1) el formar parte de una evolución tipológica que arranca de un antiguo prototipo iranio; 2) el haber aparecido, en los dos casos, a casi 1000 km de su lugar de origen, informándonos de intercambios a larga distancia en dos rutas de Oriente diferentes (una a través de Irán, otra remontando el Nilo) y en dos momentos cronológicos distintos (Hierro II iranio y Meroítico temprano, respectivamente).

Environmental contamination caused by inorganic compounds is a major problem affecting soils and surface water. Most remediation techniques are costly and generally lead to incomplete removal and production of secondary waste. Nanotechnology, in this scenario with the zero-valent iron nanoparticle, represents a new generation of environmental remediation technologies. It is non-toxic, abundant, cheap, easy to produce, and its production process is simple. However, in order to decrease the aggregation tendency, the zero-iron nanoparticle is frequently coated with chemical surfactants synthesized from petrochemical sources, which are persistent or partially biodegradable. Biosurfactants (rhamnolipids), extracellular compounds produced by microorganisms from hydrophilic and hydrophobic substrates can replace synthetic surfactants. This study investigated the efficiency of a rhamnolipid biosurfactant on the aggregation of nanoscale zer-valent iron (nZVI) and its efficiency in reducing nitrate in simulated groundwater at pH 4.0. Two methods were tested: 1) adding the rhamnolipid during chemical synthesis and 2) adding the rhamnolipid after chemical synthesis of nZVI. Scanning electron microscopy field emission, X-ray diffractometry, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, Dynamic Light Scattering, and zeta potential measurements were used to characterize bare nZVI and rhamnolipid-coated nZVI. The effects of the type of nZVI and initial NO3 concentration were examined. Nanoscale zer-valent iron with the addition of the rhamnolipid after synthesis achieved the best removal rate of nitrate (about 78%), with an initial nitrate concentration of 25 mg L−1. The results suggest that nZVI functionalized with rhamnolipids is a promising strategy for the in situ remediations of groundwater contaminated by NO3, heavy metal, and inorganic carbon.

Sport for people with disabilities appears to play a positive role in the well-being, resilience and social support of athletes with disabilities. Thus, this systematic review aims to evaluate the effect of adapted sport on the well-being, resilience and social support in a population with disabilities. The Pubmed, Web of Science, Scopus and SportDiscus databases were used, with several descriptors and Boolean operators. A total of 287 studies were identified through searching the databases. After the data extraction process, twenty-seven studies were included for analysis. In general, these studies show that adapted sport has a positive impact on the levels of well-being, resilience and social support resources for people with disabilities, contributing to their personal development, quality of life and integration into society. Considering the impact on the variables studied, these results are important to support and encourage the development of adapted sport.

This study aimed to evaluate the reliability of a manipulative eye–segmental (hand and foot) coordination task, namely the Wall Drop Punt Kick and Catch test (WDPK&C), over two weeks. Forty-one children and adolescents (18 boys, 23 girls) with a mean age of 10.2 (SD = 1.62) years old were recruited for assessment. Subjects had 30 s to perform as many ball impacts as possible on a wall two meters away, following a drop punt kick, rebound on the wall, and catch sequence. The Intraclass Correlation Coefficient (ICC = 0.896) for unique measures, Cronbach Alpha (α = 0.945), and Lin’s Concordance Correlation Coefficient (CCC = 0.896) provide evidence of reliability considering two consecutive measurements. These results further support the reliability of the WDPK&C test in a sample of Portuguese children and adolescents. Thus, the WDPK&C test can be applied to Portuguese boy and girl children and adolescents. Forthcoming studies should test the reliability of this test across different age groups since it is intended to be a test with a wide lifespan coverage.

Background: Motivation is a crucial factor in predicting health-related outcomes, and understanding the determinants of motivation can provide valuable insights into how to improve health behaviors and outcomes in older adults. In this study, we aimed to investigate the associations between intrinsic and extrinsic exercise motivation, basic psychological needs, satisfaction with life, and physical activity among the elderly population. Methods: The sample consisted of 268 older adults (59 male, 209 female) aged 65–90 years old (Mage = 68.11, SD = 6.95). All participants reported that they were exercising, on average, 1.65 days (SD = 0.51) per week. Factor analysis was conducted using a two-step approach. First, a confirmatory factor analysis and then a structural equation model considering all variables under analysis was performed. Results: the structural model displayed acceptable fit to the data: χ2/df = 3.093; CFI = 0.913; TLI = 0.908; SRMR = 0.071; RMSEA 0.079 [0.066, 0.092]. Significant direct effects were found as theoretically proposed, namely: (a) intrinsic motivation were positively and significantly associated with basic psychological need satisfaction (p < 0.001); (b) extrinsic motivation were negatively but not significantly associated with basic psychological needs (p < 0.001); and (c) basic psychological need satisfaction were positively and significantly associated with satisfaction with life (p < 0.001) and physical activity (p < 0.001). Conclusions: Intrinsic motivation and basic psychological needs play a crucial role in shaping exercise behavior and overall well-being. By understanding these motivation and needs, exercise and health professionals can work towards fulfilling them and achieving a greater sense of satisfaction in the life of the elderly and promote exercise adherence.

En el Ecuador, las enfermedades cardiovasculares son las primeras causas de mortalidad. En la actualidad, estas patologías se asocian a la infección por SARS-CoV-2 y multiplican riesgos de eventuales anormalidades cardíacas y vasculares. Se presenta el caso de un paciente de 43 años edad sin antecedentes patológicos de relevancia con COVID-19.

Background and Objectives: This study aimed to examine the effects of a low-cost multicomponent exercise program on health-related functional fitness in the community-dwelling aged and older adults. As a second objective, this study compared the exercise program between aged adults (Materials and Methods: Forty-eight participants were included in the exercise program, and their mean age was 64.73 years (±5.93 years). The Senior Fitness Tests were performed by each participant. A dynamometer was used to assess hand grip strength, and body composition was assessed considering the body mass index. Paired-sample t test was used to compare data at baseline and after the exercise program, considering the total sample. Afterwards, a 2 × 2 analysis of variance was used to examine differences within and between groups. Results: Statistically significant improvements in the chair stand (t = −14.06; p < 0.001; d = 0.42), arm curl (t = −12.10; p < 0.001; d = 0.58), 2 min step test (t = −9.41; p < 0.001; d = 0.24), timed up and go test (t = 5.60; p < 0.001; d = 0.19), and hand grip strength (t = −3.33; p < 0.001; d = 0.15) were observed. There were also significant differences in the back scratch (t = −6.68; p < 0.001; d = 0.18) and chair sit and reach test (t = 5.04; p < 0.001; d = 0.05), as well as body mass index (p < 0.05). No significant differences were found between groups (p > 0.05). Conclusion: This study provides evidence that a 24-week low-cost community-based exercise program can improve functional fitness in aged and in older adults. The exercise program supplied the necessary data to construct further randomized controlled trials that can be performed in the community in an environmentally sustainable fashion and applied, not only to the elderly, but also to those transitioning to this age group.

Despite the widely recognized health benefits of physical activity, participation in regular physical activity falls far short of the Global Action Plan on Physical Activity 2018–2030. More than half of the population does not reach current recommendations, and around one-fourth is not sufficiently active at all. Understanding social-cognitive theories may aid in the creation of interventions to improve long-term physical activity maintenance. The current work covers theory and research on physical activity patterns. It specifically provides an overview of contemporary conceptualizations of motivational and cognitive theories, as well as reviews recent perspectives on how physical activity can be adopted and maintained. Key questions, such as whether physical activity can be executed purely based on cognitive functions, are also addressed. Furthermore, this review identifies possible and effective intervention strategies to promote physical activity.

Physical activity and diet are two predominant determinants of population health status that may influence each other. Physical activity has been identified as a behavior that may lead to a healthier diet and regulates eating behaviors. This research aimed to investigate how the level of physical activity is associated with the motivation related to eating behaviors and, consequently, the eating style individuals have on a daily basis. This was a cross-sectional study in which participants completed an online questionnaire that assessed the following variables: the level of physical activity, the motivation toward eating behavior, and the type of eating behavior. In total, 440 individuals (180 men and 260 women) who regularly exercised in gyms and fitness centers aged between 19 and 64 years (M = 33.84; SD = 10.09) took part in the study. The data were collected following the Declaration of Helsinki and with the approval of the Ethics Committee of the Polytechnic of Leiria. For the statistical analysis, mean and standard deviations were first calculated, as well as bivariate correlations between all the variables of interest. Then, structural equation model analyses were performed considering the levels of physical activity as the independent variable, motivations toward eating behavior as the mediators, and eating styles as the dependent variables. It was concluded that a greater level of physical activity leads to a more self-determined type of eating regulation, which in turn results in less constricted eating behaviors that are influenced by external factors and emotional factors.

En el presente trabajo se evaluó el efecto de una dieta en base a semillas de Glycine max, soya rica en isoflavonas, y de un tratamiento con 17β-estradiol sobre la resistencia ósea y la contractilidad del músculo uterino en especímenes de Rattus rattus, ovariectomizadas. Se organizaron los siguientes grupos de trabajo: Grupo1 (control), sin ovariectomizar y con dieta común (Purina libre de soya); Grupo2 ovariectomizados y con dieta común; Grupo3, ovariectomizados alimentadas con las semillas de soya; y Grupo4 ovariectomizados y con tratamiento hormonal de estradiol. Después de 150 días las ratas se sacrificaron y se les extirparon los fémures, para medir su resistencia ósea y el útero, para medir su respuesta contráctil a la acción de la oxitocina. Los resultados muestran que ambos tratamientos tienen un efecto positivo sobre los indicadores señalados, en ratas castradas; y que una dieta rica en soya es una eficiente alternativa terapéutica natural a la terapia hormonal de remplazo para mujeres menopáusicas u ovariectomizadas afectadas a causa del hipoestrogenismo.

Sunscreen formulations containing inorganic/organic filters or mixture of them were synthesized by oil/water dispersion. The viscosity measurements show that sunscreen formulations are time-dependent non-newtonian fluids. In the CIELab color diagram, the white and/or beige colors presented by formulations do not compromise the aesthetics of the cosmetic product. UV-VIS absorption spectra show that sunscreen creams have high UV shielding ability, mainly the formulations containing inorganic and organic filters mixtures, which provide in vitro SPF and critical wavelength values recommended for UV protection.

Introduction: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the main cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. The use of the Framingham Risk Score is of great importance for predicting CVD risk. Objective: To estimate the 10-year CVD risk in adult patients diagnosed high blood pressure (HBP) who visited the outpatient service of the San Miguelito de Píllaro Health Center, in Tungurahua, Ecuador, using the Framingham Risk Score (2008). Materials and methods: Cross-sectional, observational, prospective and descriptive study conducted in 120 HBP patients aged 30 to 74 years who visited the outpatient service between January and October 2017. Data were obtained from the review of medical records, which were in turn updated during the execution of the study. The Framingham risk score was used to calculate the 10-year CVD risk. A descriptive analysis of the data was performed in Epi Info 7, using absolute frequencies and percentages. Results: Of the 120 patients, 59.17% were women. Furthermore, 15% of the participants had been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes mellitus, 13.33% had a history of smoking, 47.50% had elevated systolic blood pressure, and 39.17% had hypercholesterolemia. CVD risk was low (≤ 1% Framingham score), intermediate (10-19%), and high (≥ 20%) in 15%, 29.16%, and 59.16% of participants, respectively. None of them had a very low CVD risk (≤1%). Conclusion: The Framingham risk score was useful to estimate CVD risk in the study population treated in the primary health care setting. Consequently, more extensive use of this instrument in different health units is recommended to obtain better estimates of CVD risk and, as a result, achieve the implementation of health prevention and health care actions that improve the prognosis in the medium and long term, and thus the quality of life of these patients.

Aluminium plays a central role in soil acidity, which is one of the main constraints on grape production in humid, northern temperate viticultural regions. To decrease the acidity of vineyard soil, it is usually amended with alkaline materials that provide conjugate bases to weak acids (liming). However, one practical consideration is the danger of overliming, which has potential implications in terms of yield reduction and decreased bioavailability of several mineral nutrients. The main aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of overliming using dolomitic lime on grapevines growing on acid soil. The effects on the topsoil fertility parameters (0–30 cm), petiole and berry nutrient levels, berry weight and must quality properties were studied in a vineyard planted with Vitis vinifera L. cv. Mencía for three years (2014–2016). Data analysis performed using a mixed model that took into account both random effects (year of sampling) and fixed effects (liming treatments) showed that overliming decreased the manganese content in both leaf and berry tissues. Until now, nothing was known about the effects of overliming on both vine nutritional status and harvest quality properties, thus this study fills an important knowledge gap.

Introducción. La mordedura por serpiente, denominada ofidismo o accidente ofídico, es una patología tropical y urgencia médica con tasas de morbilidad considerable. Su severidad se clasifica en envenenamiento leve, moderado y severo. Objetivo. Determinar el perfil sociodemográfico y la frecuencia del envenenamiento del accidente ofídico en la población del Cantón Taisha. Materiales y métodos. Estudio de casos, retrospectivo, descriptivo. Se incluyó 116 pacientes con diagnóstico de ofidismo atendidos en primer y segundo nivel de atención del Cantón Taisha durante el período 2017-2018. Se analizaron datos demográficos como sexo, grupo etario, etnia, grado de severidad y estacionalidad. Se creó una base en Microsoft Excel 2013 y se procesó con el programa Epi Info 7. Resultados. El accidente ofídico predominó en hombres (60,34%), y en adultos (55,17 %). La parroquia más frecuente fue Macuma (31,90%), la etnia predominante fue indígena con (99,14%). El envenenamiento mínimo (50%), moderado (37,07%), y severo (12,93%), con más prevalencia en los meses de junio, agosto y noviembre con el 12,07% cada uno. Conclusión. Las características sociodemográficas, así como los porcentajes de envenenamiento obtenidos en el presente estudio tienen una buena correlación con resultados emitidos por el Ministerio de Salud Pública.

Este artigo procura apresentar através do estudo bibliográfico a “evolução” histórica, a partir das reflexões de alguns autores como Elisabet Sahtouris, Tomás de Aquino, Lutero, René Descartes (1596- 1649), Padovani & Castagnola( 1995), Galileu Galilei (1564-1642) , Francis Bacon (1561-1626) dentre outros, que em seus estudos apontam o processo de separação entre o homem e a natureza, identificando as características da sociedade em cada momento histórico e quais eram as suas visões deste objeto de estudo. O objetivo é mostrar o processo histórico que levou a ruptura entre o homem e a natureza, processo este que traz à tona os verdadeiros valores da sociedade moderna e o apogeu dos pressupostos do sistema econômico capitalista, sendo este o principal responsável por essa ruptura, refletindo no comportamento de consumo e agressão/posse do meio ambiente pela sociedade.

El objetivo de este trabajo es analizar detalladamente la iconografía (presente y ausente) y los pseudojeroglíficos del cippus de Horus 34328 del Museo Arqueológico Nacional de Madrid, estela que ha sufrido además un acusado desgaste, debido sin lugar a dudas a su uso como instrumento mágico-sanador a lo largo de varios siglos. Intentamos también ofrecer dos cronologías relativas a la pieza: la de su elaboración y la de su presumible amortización.

Here, we present the case of a 78-year-old male patient with undifferentiated spindle cell sarcoma on the posteromedial surface of the right leg who experienced a long-lasting progression-free survival. Due to an underlying cardiac disease, the patient was not suitable for anthracyclines. In September 2015, he received first-line chemotherapy with trabectedin (Yondelis®) at the approved dosage and regimen – concomitant with external radiotherapy (RT). After the first 9 cycles of trabectedin plus RT given in the neoadjuvant setting, the patient underwent surgical resection. At that stage, we observed a very good pathological response with 80% of necrotic area. The patient resumed the therapy with trabectedin; however, approximately 5 months later, we observed a new nodular heterogeneous lesion with ill-defined margins in the right leg and suggestive of tumor relapse. Subsequently an above-the-knee amputation was performed, and the patient resumed his trabectedin therapy with the same dosage and regimen. In January 2018, almost 2 1/2 years after the start of trabectedin treatment and 30+ cycles of trabectedin, the patient is locoregionally and distant metastatically disease-free. Currently, the treatment with trabectedin is maintained without any significant serious toxicity. Future clinical trials are needed to gain additional insights into the role of trabectedin maintenance therapy until disease progression in the neoadjuvant setting and to identify predictive and prognostic criteria for response to trabectedin in patients with advanced sarcoma.

Vineyard calcareous soils are usually low in organic matter, which makes them prone to physical, chemical, and biological degradation. Besides, these soils are also usually poor in various nutrients in plant-available form, e.g., iron. To make up for this lack of soil fertility, on the one hand, manures, and on the other, iron chelates are usually used. However, the soil application of these materials is not free from problems, and other amendments based on leonardites could be advantageously used as an alternative. Therefore, two organic amendments, one leonardite alone (1 Mg/ha), and the other leonardite (1 Mg/ha) plus ferrous sulphate heptahydrate (0.5 Mg/ha), were tested for three years in a commercial vineyard calcareous plot under Mediterranean climate. The effects of these amendments on soil fertility, plant nutrient contents, and berry quality were studied against a control of bare soil by means of a fully randomized trial with three repetitions per treatment. Soil organic matter (SOM) increased as a consequence of both leonardite treatments, but much more than expected on the basis of a simple mass transfer from the amendments. With the ferrous-sulphate-heptahydrate-supplemented leonardite, the increase in SOM was noticeably higher. This is explained on the basis of nutrient quantity and intensity-pH-related effects, which increased soil nutrient plant-availability and presumably enhanced vine root growth. In response to the higher plant availability of nutrients, the petiole nutrient concentrations were observed to increase under the leonardite treatments. However, only a trend to increase potassium in petioles and in grape must, linked to a decrease of grape must pH, was observed in harvest quality under the leonardite treatments. Leonardite and adequately supplemented leonardite seem to have potential for increasing SOM contents and nutrient plant-availability, thus improving the soil fertility of vineyard calcareous soils.

The application and use of efficient cooling fluids have become increasingly important due to the increasing industrial and energy demand associated with the miniaturization of various electronic devices. The search for high-efficiency heat exchanger fluids in the early 1990s led to the development of a new class of refrigerants called nanofluids. The use of nanofluids is linked to obtaining stable colloidal dispersions which exhibit high thermal conductivity. For this purpose, the efficiency of a nanofluid will depend on the type of fluid used and the dispersed nanomaterial. In this work, a stable aqueous nanofluid based on mercaptopropionic acid-coated copper sulfide nanoparticles (Cu2S/MPA), synthesized by the chemical reduction method, was developed. The nanofluid presented colloidal stability in alkaline medium and an average increase of 36% in thermal conductivity for a volumetric fraction of 0.05%.

Aluminium phytotoxicity is considered the main limiting factor for crop productivity in agricultural acid soils. Liming is a common practice used to improve acidic soil properties, but an appropriate liming material is essential for both agricultural productivity and environmental sustainability. A long-term field experiment with two liming amendments (dolomitic limestone and limestone) was developed during 10 years to determine the changes in soil acidity and assess the effects on crop (rye) yields. Although the adverse effects of the soil acidity conditions were alleviated with both amendments tested, dolomitic limestone was the most effective in the short- and long-term period. In terms of the saturation of exchange complex, dolomitic limestone had a better efficiency, likely based on its rate of dissolution. No significant changes in soil organic matter and exchangeable potassium levels between the treatments tested were found. Both liming materials significantly increased the rye total biomass, but interestingly, significant correlations were showed between tissue levels of magnesium and biomass production, but not between the latter and calcium. The increases in rye biomass production compared with control soils at the end of the research were the following: dolomitic limestone, 47%, and limestone, 32%. A link between an increase in magnesium bioavailability and biomass production was found, as well as between magnesium rye content and total, spike and stem biomass. Hence, it could conceivably be hypothesized that since magnesium is crucial for the transport of assimilates from source leaves to sink organs, alleviating its deficiency leads to avoiding the reducing growth rate of sink organs. Although further investigations are needed to gain a better understanding of liming on the biological, chemical and physical soil properties in the long term, our research provides support for the conceptual premise that an appropriate selection of liming material is crucial for the productivity of acid soils.

The practice of physical exercise (PE), especially strength training (ST), has health benefits in the healthy population; however, the literature is scarce in the recommendations related to the population with intellectual disability (ID). This study represents the first analysis on the topic and aims to examine the structure and efficacy of ST experimental intervention programs in individuals with ID. This systematic review was carried out between January and April 2021, using the PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, and SPORTDiscus databases, according to the PRISMA guidelines. From a total of 166 studies, eight were included in the present systematic review. The studies included a total of 280 individuals (18.23 ± 2.86 years old). The main features of the exercise programs are: 12 weeks average duration, three weekly sessions of 45–60 min, six to seven exercises targeting the main muscle groups, two to three sets, 6–12 repetitions, and avoiding free weights for safety reasons. The main results showed increments in strength, balance and fat-free mass and decrements in fat mass and waist circumference. It is a useful guideline for PE technicians to prescribe and adjust correctly in order to not only promote physical fitness, but improve the quality of life of individuals with ID.

Fundamento: La histerectomía, después de la operación cesárea es la cirugía ginecológica que más se realiza; esta se puede hacer por diferentes vías: la abdominal, vaginal y laparoscópica; de todas ellas la vaginal tiene una significación histórica. Objetivo: Analizar las diferentes etapas históricas de la histerectomía vaginal como técnica quirúrgica. Metodología: Se revisaron documentos publicados en diferentes bases de datos (PubMed, Medline, Redalyc, Hinari, Ebsco) en idioma inglés y español. Se escogieron los que aportaron datos históricos. Se utilizó el método histórico-lógico para el análisis de las diferentes etapas del desarrollo de la histerectomía vaginal y el de análisis y síntesis para determinar las relaciones entre las diferentes etapas que caracterizaron a la técnica y su contribución a la técnica actual. Resultados: Se revisaron un total de 223 artículos, de los cuales se seleccionaron 42 que contenían datos históricos y las características de los procederes, así como las fechas. Conclusiones: El desarrollo de la histerectomía vaginal ha sufrido cambios a través de los tiempos en las indicaciones y la forma de realizarse lo cual ha influido en que en la actualidad en muchos países se ha convertido en la técnica de elección de la histerectomía.

Nuestro objetivo fue evaluar la capacidad de combinación entre cultivares de especies forrajeras, comúnmente sembradas en las regiones templadas de Argentina, utilizando caracteres de calidad de materia seca. Se evaluaron durante el primer año, tres variedades genéticamente diversas de cebadillas (Bromus catharticus, cv Copetona, cv Ñandú y cv. Tango), un cultivar de trébol blanco (Trifolium repens, cv Lucero) y un cultivar de trébol rojo (T. pratense, cv Tropero). Un diseño de Bloques completamente aleatorizado se estableció en "Los Hornos", La Plata, Buenos Aires. El tratamiento incluyó cinco monocultivos y diez mezclas binarias. Las parcelas fueron cortadas 3 veces durante un período de 9 meses. Un sub-muestra representativa de 200 mg se secó a 60 º C hasta peso constante en un horno de aire forzado. Las muestras secas se molieron hasta 1 mm. Una técnica enzimática (pepsina-celulasa) se utilizó para determinar la digestibilidad de materia seca in vitro (DIV). La metodología de Dumas se aplicó para estimar proteína bruta en % (PROT). Se probaron diferencias entre momento de corte y su interacción con los tratamientos utilizando un análisis de parcela dividida en el tiempo. Se aplicó el test de comparación múltiple (Tukey, al 5%) y un análisis de la varianza (ANVA) para identificar la mejor combinación. Un análisis dialélico proporcionó las estimaciones de aptitud combinatoria general (ACG) y aptitud combinatoria específica (ACE). La DIV estuvo influenciada principalmente por el momento de corte, mientras que PROT mostró estabilidad a lo largo de la temporada de crecimiento, debido a un patrón aditivo. Se señalan dos resultados importantes: a- Compatibilidad entre las cebadillas "Tango" y "Ñandú" en mezclas con los tréboles. Las combinaciones TR y ÑB alcanzaron mayores valores de PROT y DIV, espectivamente,. b- Competencia por los mismos recursos en parcelas con mezclas de cebadillas, cuando la variedad “Tango” fue un componente de la mezcla. Las mezclas CT y ÑT, presentaron una disminución de la digestibilidad de la materia seca en los cortes de primavera y de inicio de verano. Ambos hallazgos justificarían la incorporación de parcelas mixtas en los programas de mejoramiento destinados a aumentar la calidad para el desarrollo de nuevas variedades, factibles de ser utilizadas en el futuro como constituyentes de pasturas mixtas de pastos y tréboles.

The present work focuses on the synthesis of small particles of the perovskite phase of BaMnO3 through the route of conventional coprecipitation (RCC) and the method of conventional microemulsion (MCM). The techniques used for samples characterization were: scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction patterns (XRD), thermogravimetry (TG) and differential thermal analysis (DTA). The synthesis of materials in self-organized colloidal system has as main objective to increase the shape and size homogeneity of the particles. In the last years it has been intensified the search for more homogeneous materials. The microemulsion route is an alternative method for the synthesis of more homogeneous material because it allows for controlling the relationship of water to surfactante concentrations, (w), which controls the average size of the microemulsion drops. Pure perovskite BaMnO3 phase obtained from microemulsion appears at smaller temperature than the precipitated one, and results in a better size distribution of the particles, around 0,1 mm in diameter compared to 0,5 mm obtained by coprecipitation.

Silica spherical particles were prepared in reverse microemulsion from sodium silicate solution precursor. Particle shape and size changes were investigated in function of reactants addition order, sodium silicate solution concentration and water to surfactant ratio (W) and product separation and purification. This paper reports on the uniform spherical silica particles preparation in function of the mentioned different experimental conditions. Scanning electron micrographs show uniform spherical silica particle obtained from the mixture of two reverse microemulsion: microemulsion A with soluble sodium silicate was added to a microemulsion B with nitric acid solution. Concentrated sodium silicate solution was diluted to 1:10 (silicate:water) ratio. Separation and purification was carried out in two steps with hot ethanol and water. The average particle size increases as W increases.

The present work demonstrates preparation of magnetic nanoparticles by a novel method. Magnetic nanoparticles with potential for biomedical and environmental applications were obtained by homogeneous coprecipitation method sonochemically assisted. The effect of ultrasonic cavitation on changing the reaction environment was studied. The chemical reaction media used here was very similar to those used for Sono-Fenton process. The ultrasonic energy has driven the growth of particles; smaller diameter nanoparticles were obtained by applying a higher power. For the first time, it was demonstrated the iron oxide nanoparticles synthesis at pH lower than 6.

Introducción: La desnutrición infantil es uno de los principales problemas de salud pública nacional y global. Objetivos: Analizar los logros y limitaciones en una Región del Perú de una política regional exitosa en la lucha contra la desnutrición. Diseño: Estudio cualitativo empleando el Enfoque de Evaluación de Sistemas de Salud – Health System Assessment. Lugar: La Región San Martín, Perú. Participantes: Gestores y funcionarios de la Región de Salud, usuarios y no usuarios de los servicios. Intervenciones: Entre junio y julio 2014 se realizaron entrevistas semiestructuradas a gestores y funcionarios de los niveles regional y local de la autoridad de salud de la Región San Martín, Perú, así como entrevistas a usuarios y no usuarios de los servicios. Principales medidas de resultados: Nudos críticos en la reducción de la desnutrición infantil. Resultados: Se identificó nudos críticos a nivel de cada uno de los seis componentes del modelo empleado: gobernanza, financiamiento, provisión de servicios, recursos humanos, medicamentos, y sistema de información. Conclusiones: Se extraen lecciones aprendidas sobre la base de los resultados, validadas en talleres con los propios funcionarios de la región y directivos nacionales de salud.
