The $\beta$ Cephei pulsators are massive main-sequence stars, presenting low radial-order modes. These modes probe in particular the chemical gradient at the edge of the convective core. They hence give constraints on macroscopic processes, such as hydrodynamic or magnetic instabilities. Yet, it is not clear to what extent the seismic inferences depend on the physics employed for the stellar modelling or on the observational dataset. We investigate the observational constraints which are necessary to provide accurate constraints on the mixing processes in $\beta$ Cephei stars. We explore the importance of the identification of the angular degree of modes. Depending on the quality of the seismic dataset and the classical constraints, we estimate the precision achievable with asteroseismology. We propose a method extending the forward approach classically used to model $\beta$ Cephei stars The probability distributions of the asteroseismic-derived stellar parameters are obtained. With these distributions, we provide a systemic way to estimate the errors of the modelling. A particular effort is made to also include the theoretical uncertainties of the models. We then estimate the accuracy and precision of asteroseismology for $\beta$ Cephei stars in a series of hare and hound exercises. The exercises show that a set of four to five oscillation frequencies with an identified angular degree already leads to accurate inferences on the stellar parameters. Without the identification of the modes, the addition of other classical observational constraints allow to succeed the seismic modelling. When the micro-physics of the star and stellar models used for the modelling differ, the constraints derived on the internal structure remain valid if expressed in terms of acoustic variables. This paper documents the seventeenth data release (DR17) from the Sloan Digital Sky Surveys; the fifth and final release from the fourth phase (SDSS-IV). DR17 contains the complete release of the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory (MaNGA) survey, which reached its goal of surveying over 10,000 nearby galaxies. The complete release of the MaNGA Stellar Library (MaStar) accompanies this data, providing observations of almost 30,000 stars through the MaNGA instrument during bright time. DR17 also contains the complete release of the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment 2 (APOGEE-2) survey which publicly releases infra-red spectra of over 650,000 stars. The main sample from the Extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (eBOSS), as well as the sub-survey Time Domain Spectroscopic Survey (TDSS) data were fully released in DR16. New single-fiber optical spectroscopy released in DR17 is from the SPectroscipic IDentification of ERosita Survey (SPIDERS) sub-survey and the eBOSS-RM program. Along with the primary data sets, DR17 includes 25 new or updated Value Added Catalogs (VACs). This paper concludes the release of SDSS-IV survey data. The advent of space-based photometry missions such as CoRoT, Kepler and TESS has sparkled the development of asteroseismology and exoplanetology. The advent of PLATO will further strengthen such multi-disciplinary studies. Testing asteroseismic modelling and its importance for our understanding of planetary systems is crucial. We carried out a detailed modelling of Kepler-93, an exoplanet host star observed by Kepler. This star is particularly interesting as it is very similar to the PLATO benchmark target (G spectral type, ~ 6000K, ~ 1 Msun and ~ 1 Rsun) and provides a real-life testbed for potential procedures to be used for PLATO. We use global and local minimization techniques for the seismic modelling of Kepler-93, varying the ingredients of our stellar models. We compute seismic inversions of the mean density. We use these revised stellar parameters to provide new planetary parameters and simulate the orbital evolution of the system under the effects of tides and atmospheric evaporation. Our fundamental parameters for Kepler-93: mean density = 1.654 +/- 0.004 g/cm3, M = 0.907 +/- 0.023 Msun , R = 0.918 +/- 0.008 Rsun and Age = 6.78 +/- 0.32 Gyr. The uncertainties we report for this benchmark are within the requirements of PLATO. For the exoplanet Kepler-93b, we find Mp = 4.01 +/- 0.67 Mearth, Rp = 1.478 +/- 0.014 Rearth and semi-major axis a = 0.0533 +/- 0.0005 AU. According to our simulations, it seems unlikely that Kepler-93b formed with a mass large enough to be impacted by stellar tides. For the benchmark of PLATO, detailed asteroseismic modelling procedures will be able to provide fundamental stellar parameters within the requirements. We illustrate what synergies can be achieved regarding the orbital evolution and atmospheric evaporation of exoplanets. We present a catalogue of 362 million stellar parameters, distances, and extinctions derived from Gaia's early third data release (EDR3) cross-matched with the photometric catalogues of Pan-STARRS1, SkyMapper, 2MASS, and AllWISE. The higher precision of the Gaia EDR3 data, combined with the broad wavelength coverage of the additional photometric surveys and the new stellar-density priors of the {\tt StarHorse} code allow us to substantially improve the accuracy and precision over previous photo-astrometric stellar-parameter estimates. At magnitude $G=14\, (17)$, our typical precisions amount to 3% (15%) in distance, 0.13 mag (0.15 mag) in $V$-band extinction, and 140 K (180 K) in effective temperature. Our results are validated by comparisons with open clusters, as well as with asteroseismic and spectroscopic measurements, indicating systematic errors smaller than the nominal uncertainties for the vast majority of objects. We also provide distance- and extinction-corrected colour-magnitude diagrams, extinction maps, and extensive stellar density maps that reveal detailed substructures in the Milky Way and beyond. The new density maps now probe a much greater volume, extending to regions beyond the Galactic bar and to Local Group galaxies, with a larger total number density. We publish our results through an ADQL query interface ({\tt gaia.aip.de}) as well as via tables containing approximations of the full posterior distributions. Polarons, that is, charge carriers correlated with lattice deformations, are ubiquitous quasiparticles in semiconductors, and play an important role in electrical conductivity. To date most theoretical studies of so-called large polarons, in which the lattice can be considered as a continuum, have focused on the original Fr\"ohlich model: a simple (non-degenerate) parabolic isotropic electronic band coupled to one dispersionless longitudinal optical phonon branch. The Fr\"ohlich model allows one to understand characteristics such as polaron formation energy, radius, effective mass and mobility. Real cubic materials, instead, have electronic band extrema that are often degenerate or anisotropic and present several phonon modes. In the present work, we address such issues. We keep the continuum hypothesis inherent to the large polaron Fr\"ohlich model, but waive the isotropic and non-degeneracy hypotheses, and also include multiple phonon branches. For polaron effective masses, working at the lowest order of perturbation theory, we provide analytical results for the case of anisotropic electronic energy dispersion, with two distinct effective masses (uniaxial) and numerical simulations for the degenerate 3-band case, typical of III-V and II-VI semiconductor valence bands. We also deal with the strong-coupling limit, using a variational treatment: we propose trial wavefunctions for the above-mentioned cases, providing polaron radii and energies. We study from first principles the emission linewidth of Eu$^{2+}$-doped LED phosphors. Based on the one-dimensional configuration coordinate model, an analysis of first principles data obtained for fifteen compounds show that, at working temperature, the linewidth of Eu$^{2+}$ emission band in solids is negligibly affected by quantum effects, and can be extracted from the Franck-Condon energy shifts. For a fixed Stokes shift, the difference of Franck-Condon energy shifts in the excited and ground states is the key factor for the FWHM determination. Narrow emission Eu$^{2+}$-doped LED phosphors are expected for the case with large positive value of such difference., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

We present the third and final data release of the K2 Galactic Archaeology Program (K2 GAP) for Campaigns C1-C8 and C10-C18. We provide asteroseismic radius and mass coefficients, $\kappa_R$ and $\kappa_M$, for $\sim 19,000$ red giant stars, which translate directly to radius and mass given a temperature. As such, K2 GAP DR3 represents the largest asteroseismic sample in the literature to date. K2 GAP DR3 stellar parameters are calibrated to be on an absolute parallactic scale based on Gaia DR2, with red giant branch and red clump evolutionary state classifications provided via a machine-learning approach. Combining these stellar parameters with GALAH DR3 spectroscopy, we determine asteroseismic ages with precisions of $\sim 20-30\%$ and compare age-abundance relations to Galactic chemical evolution models among both low- and high-$\alpha$ populations for $\alpha$, light, iron-peak, and neutron-capture elements. We confirm recent indications in the literature of both increased Ba production at late Galactic times, as well as significant contribution to r-process enrichment from prompt sources associated with, e.g., core-collapse supernovae. With an eye toward other Galactic archaeology applications, we characterize K2 GAP DR3 uncertainties and completeness using injection tests, suggesting K2 GAP DR3 is largely unbiased in mass/age and with uncertainties of $2.9\%\,(\rm{stat.})\,\pm0.1\%\,(\rm{syst.})$ & $6.7\%\,(\rm{stat.})\,\pm0.3\%\,(\rm{syst.})$ in $\kappa_R$ & $\kappa_M$ for red giant branch stars and $4.7\%\,(\rm{stat.})\,\pm0.3\%\,(\rm{syst.})$ & $11\%\,(\rm{stat.})\,\pm0.9\%\,(\rm{syst.})$ for red clump stars. We perform an asteroseismic investigation of giant stars in the field of NGC 6791 with previous indications of atypical evolution. The analysis makes use of observations from Kepler and Gaia in combination with ground-based photometry, a literature radial-velocity study, and measurements of eclipsing binaries in the cluster. We derive mass, radius, effective temperature, evolutionary stage and apparent distance modulus of each target. Among the investigated cluster giants we find clear evidence of overmassive and undermassive members, and non-members with strong hints of potential past membership. Our results indicate that about 10% of the red giants in the cluster have experienced mass-transfer or a merger. High resolution, high-S/N spectroscopic follow-up could confirm potential past membership of the non-members, and reveal whether certain element abundances might expose the non-standard evolution of overmassive and undermassive stars. If so, field stars of similar type could be identified as what they are, i.e. over- or undermassive stars, and not mistakenly classified as younger or older than they are., Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

The observations of global stellar oscillations of post main-sequence stars by space-based photometry missions allowed to directly determine their internal rotation. These constraints have pointed towards the existence of angular momentum transport processes unaccounted for in theoretical models. Constraining the properties of their internal rotation thus appears as the golden path to determine the physical nature of these missing dynamical processes. We wish to determine the robustness of a new approach to study the internal rotation of post main-sequence stars, using parametric rotation profiles coupled to a global optimization technique. We test our methodology on Kepler 56, a red giant observed by the Kepler mission. First, we carry out an extensive modelling of the star using global and local minimizations techniques, and seismic inversions. Then, using our best model, we study in details its internal rotation profile, we adopted a Bayesian approach to constrain stellar parametric predetermined rotation profiles using a Monte Carlo Markov Chain analysis of the rotational splittings of mixed modes. Our Monte Carlo Markov Chain analysis of the rotational splittings allows to determine the core and envelope rotation of Kepler 56 as well as give hints about the location of the transition between the slowly rotating envelope and the fast rotating core. We are able to discard a rigid rotation profile in the radiative regions followed by a power-law in the convective zone and show that the data favours a transition located in the radiative region, as predicted by processes originating from a turbulent nature. Our analysis of Kepler 56 indicates that turbulent processes whose transport efficiency is reduced by chemical gradients are favoured, while large scale fossil magnetic fields are disfavoured as a solution to the missing angular momentum transport., Comment: accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics

We investigate the properties of the double sequences of the Milky Way discs visible in the [$\alpha$/Fe] vs [Fe/H] diagram. In the framework of Galactic formation and evolution, we discuss the complex relationships between age, metallicity, [$\alpha$/Fe], and the velocity components. We study stars with measured chemical, seismic and astrometric properties from the APOGEE survey, the Kepler and Gaia satellites, respectively. We separate the [$\alpha$/Fe]-[Fe/H] diagram into 3 stellar populations: the thin disc, the high-$\alpha$ metal-poor thick disc and the high-$\alpha$ metal-rich thick disc and characterise each of these in the age-chemo-kinematics parameter space. We compare results obtained from different APOGEE data releases and using two recent age determinations. We use the Besan\c{c}on Galaxy model (BGM) to highlight selection biases and mechanisms not included in the model. The thin disc exhibits a flat age-metallicity relation while [$\alpha$/Fe] increases with stellar age. We confirm no correlation between radial and vertical velocities with [Fe/H], [$\alpha$/Fe] and age for each stellar population. Considering both samples, V$_\varphi$ decreases with age for the thin disc, while it increases with age for the h$\alpha$mp thick disc. Although the age distribution of the h$\alpha$mr thick disc is very close to that of the h$\alpha$mp thick disc between 7 and 14 Gyr, its kinematics seems to follow that of the thin disc. This feature, not predicted by the hypotheses included in the BGM, suggests a different origin and history for this population. Finally, we show that there is a maximum dispersion of the vertical velocity, $\sigma_Z$, with age for the h$\alpha$mp thick disc around 8 Gyr. We propose a method for the description and simulation of the nonlinear dynamics of slender structures modeled as Cosserat rods. It is based on interpreting the strains and the generalized velocities of the cross sections as basic variables and elements of the special Euclidean algebra. This perspective emerges naturally from the evolution equations for strands, that are one-dimensional submanifolds, of the special Euclidean group. The discretization of the corresponding equations for the three-dimensional motion of a Cosserat rod is performed, in space, by using a staggered grid. The time evolution is then approximated with a semi-implicit method. Within this approach we can easily include dissipative effects due to both the action of external forces and the presence of internal mechanical dissipation. The comparison with results obtained with different schemes shows the effectiveness of the proposed method, which is able to provide very good predictions of nonlinear dynamical effects and shows competitive computation times also as an energy-minimizing method to treat static problems., Comment: 17 pages, 9 figures

Surface abundances of C, N, and O in red giants are affected by processed material mixed into the stars' convective envelopes. Using a sample of $\sim 5100$ stars with elemental abundances from APOGEE and asteroseismic masses from {\it Kepler}, we test theoretical stellar models that predict this mixing, then apply these models to derive birth C, N, and O abundances for these stars. Our models with standard mixing can reproduce the observed trends to within plausible uncertainties in the birth abundances. Some models with ''extra'' mixing processes fail, predicting trends with surface gravity or evolutionary state that are not observed. Applying mixing corrections to the APOGEE abundances removes the observed age-dependence of log(N/O) and log(C/N), but it leaves trends of log(N/O) and log(C/N) with metallicity, as expected based on nucleosynthesis models. The stellar N/O trend agrees well with Dopita et al.'s calibration of gas phase log(N/O) with metallicity, and with gas phase trends in the MaNGA integral field survey of nearby galaxies. We also find a substantial separation in birth [N/Mg] ratios between high-[$\alpha$/Fe] (''thick disc'') stars and low-[$\alpha$/Fe] (''thin disc'') stars. We find a smaller but still clear separation for [C/Mg]. The trends of birth C and N abundances with [Fe/H] and [$\alpha$/Fe] could affect spectroscopic age estimates for red giants that rely on the observed C/N ratio as a diagnostic of stellar mass., Comment: 18 pages, 12 figures

Strong spin-orbit semiconductor nanowires coupled to a superconductor are predicted to host Majorana zero modes. Exchange (braiding) operations of Majorana modes form the logical gates of a topological quantum computer and require a network of nanowires. Here, we develop an in-plane selective-area growth technique for InSb-Al semiconductor-superconductor nanowire networks with excellent quantum transport properties. Defect-free transport channels in InSb nanowire networks are realized on insulating, but heavily mismatched InP substrates by 1) full relaxation of the lattice mismatch at the nanowire/substrate interface on a (111)B substrate orientation, 2) nucleation of a complete network from a single nucleation site, which is accomplished by optimizing the surface diffusion length of the adatoms. Essential quantum transport phenomena for topological quantum computing are demonstrated in these structures including phase-coherent transport up to 10 $\mu$m and a hard superconducting gap accompanied by 2$e$-periodic Coulomb oscillations with an Al-based Cooper pair island integrated in the nanowire network., Comment: Data repository is available at https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.4589484 . The oscillation frequencies observed in Sun-like stars are susceptible to being shifted by magnetic activity effects. The measured shifts depend on a complex relationship involving the mode type, the field strength and spatial distribution of activity, as well as the inclination angle of the star. Evidence of these shifts is also present in frequency separation ratios which are often used when inferring global properties of stars in order to avoid surface effects. However, one assumption when using frequency ratios for this purpose is that there are no near-surface perturbations that are non-spherically symmetric. In this work, we studied the impact on inferred stellar properties when using frequency ratios that are influenced by non-homogeneous activity distributions. We generate several sets of artificial oscillation frequencies with various amounts of shift and determine stellar properties using two separate pipelines. We find that for asteroseismic observations of Sun-like targets we can expect magnetic activity to affect mode frequencies which will bias the results from stellar modelling analysis. Although for most stellar properties this offset should be small, typically less than 0.5% in mass, estimates of age and central hydrogen content can have an error of up to 5% and 3% respectively. We expect a larger frequency shift and therefore larger bias for more active stars. We also warn that for stars with very high or low inclination angles, the response of modes to activity is more easily observable in the separation ratios and hence will incur a larger bias., Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures

Using a sample of red giant stars from the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE) Data Release 16, we infer the conditional distribution $p([\alpha/\text{Fe}]\,|\,[\text{Fe/H}])$ in the Milky Way disk for the $\alpha$-elements Mg, O, Si, S, and Ca. In each bin of [Fe/H] and Galactocentric radius $R$, we model $p([\alpha/\text{Fe}])$ as a sum of two Gaussians, representing "low-$\alpha$" and "high-$\alpha$" populations with scale heights $z_1=0.45\,\text{kpc}$ and $z_2=0.95\,\text{kpc}$, respectively. By accounting for age-dependent and $z$-dependent selection effects in APOGEE, we infer the [$\alpha$/Fe] distributions that would be found for a fair sample of long-lived stars covering all $z$. Near the Solar circle, this distribution is bimodal at sub-solar [Fe/H], with the low-$\alpha$ and high-$\alpha$ peaks clearly separated by a minimum at intermediate [$\alpha$/Fe]. In agreement with previous results, we find that the high-$\alpha$ population is more prominent at smaller $R$, lower [Fe/H], and larger $|z|$, and that the sequence separation is smaller for Si and Ca than for Mg, O, and S. We find significant intrinsic scatter in [$\alpha$/Fe] at fixed [Fe/H] for both the low-$\alpha$ and high-$\alpha$ populations, typically $\sim 0.04$-dex. The means, dispersions, and relative amplitudes of this two-Gaussian description, and the dependence of these parameters on $R$, [Fe/H], and $\alpha$-element, provide a quantitative target for chemical evolution models and a test for hydrodynamic simulations of disk galaxy formation. We argue that explaining the observed bimodality will probably require one or more sharp transitions in the disk's gas accretion, star formation, or outflow history in addition to radial mixing of stellar populations., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

The COVID-19 epidemic is the last of a long list of pandemics that have affected humankind in the last century. In this paper, we propose a novel mathematical epidemiological model named SUIHTER from the names of the seven compartments that it comprises: susceptible uninfected individuals (S), undetected (both asymptomatic and symptomatic) infected (U), isolated (I), hospitalized (H), threatened (T), extinct (E), and recovered (R). A suitable parameter calibration that is based on the combined use of least squares method and Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) method is proposed with the aim of reproducing the past history of the epidemic in Italy, surfaced in late February and still ongoing to date, and of validating SUIHTER in terms of its predicting capabilities. A distinctive feature of the new model is that it allows a one-to-one calibration strategy between the model compartments and the data that are daily made available from the Italian Civil Protection. The new model is then applied to the analysis of the Italian epidemic with emphasis on the second outbreak emerged in Fall 2020. In particular, we show that the epidemiological model SUIHTER can be suitably used in a predictive manner to perform scenario analysis at national level., Comment: 25 pages

Studies of Galactic structure and evolution have benefitted enormously from Gaia kinematic information, though additional, intrinsic stellar parameters like age are required to best constrain Galactic models. Asteroseismology is the most precise method of providing such information for field star populations $\textit{en masse}$, but existing samples for the most part have been limited to a few narrow fields of view by the CoRoT and Kepler missions. In an effort to provide well-characterized stellar parameters across a wide range in Galactic position, we present the second data release of red giant asteroseismic parameters for the K2 Galactic Archaeology Program (GAP). We provide $\nu_{\mathrm{max}}$ and $\Delta \nu$ based on six independent pipeline analyses; first-ascent red giant branch (RGB) and red clump (RC) evolutionary state classifications from machine learning; and ready-to-use radius & mass coefficients, $\kappa_R$ & $\kappa_M$, which, when appropriately multiplied by a solar-scaled effective temperature factor, yield physical stellar radii and masses. In total, we report 4395 radius and mass coefficients, with typical uncertainties of $3.3\% \mathrm{\ (stat.)} \pm 1\% \mathrm{\ (syst.)}$ for $\kappa_R$ and $7.7\% \mathrm{\ (stat.)} \pm 2\% \mathrm{\ (syst.)}$ for $\kappa_M$ among RGB stars, and $5.0\% \mathrm{\ (stat.)} \pm 1\% \mathrm{\ (syst.)}$ for $\kappa_R$ and $10.5\% \mathrm{\ (stat.)} \pm 2\% \mathrm{\ (syst.)}$ for $\kappa_M$ among RC stars. We verify that the sample is nearly complete -- except for a dearth of stars with $\nu_{\mathrm{max}} \lesssim 10-20\mu$Hz -- by comparing to Galactic models and visual inspection. Our asteroseismic radii agree with radii derived from Gaia Data Release 2 parallaxes to within $2.2 \pm 0.3\%$ for RGB stars and $2.0 \pm 0.6\%$ for RC stars., Comment: Published in ApJS

The NASA-$\it{TESS}$ mission presents a treasure trove for understanding the stars it observes and the Milky Way, in which they reside. We present a first look at the prospects for Galactic and stellar astrophysics by performing initial asteroseismic analyses of bright ($G < 11$) red giant stars in the $\it{TESS}$ Southern Continuous Viewing Zone (SCVZ). Using three independent pipelines, we detect $\nu_{\mathrm{max}}$ and $\Delta\nu$ in 41% of the 15,405 star parent sample (6,388 stars), with consistency at a level of $\sim 2\%$ in $\nu_{\mathrm{max}}$ and $\sim 5\%$ in $\Delta\nu$. Based on this, we predict that seismology will be attainable for $\sim 3\times10^{5}$ giants across the whole sky, subject to improvements in analysis and data reduction techniques. The best quality $\it{TESS}$-CVZ data, for 5,574 stars where pipelines returned consistent results, provide high quality power spectra across a number of stellar evolutionary states. This makes possible studies of, for example, the Asymptotic Giant Branch bump (AGBb). We demonstrate that mixed $\ell=1$ modes and rotational splitting are cleanly observed in the 1-year data set. By combining $\it{TESS}$-CVZ data with $\it{TESS}$-HERMES, $\it{SkyMapper}$, APOGEE and $\it{Gaia}$ we demonstrate the potential for Galactic archaeology studies using the data, which provides good age precision and accuracy that reproduces the age of high $\mathrm{[\alpha/Fe]}$ stars and relationships between mass and kinematics from studies based on $\it{Kepler}$. Better quality astrometry and simpler target selection than the $\it{Kepler}$ sample makes this data ideal for studies of the local star formation history and evolution of the Galactic disc. These results provide a strong case for detailed spectroscopic follow-up in the CVZs to complement that which has been (or will be) collected by current surveys. Electronic and optical properties of materials are affected by atomic motion through the electron-phonon interaction: not only band gaps change with temperature, but even at absolute zero temperature, zero-point motion causes band-gap renormalization. We present a large-scale first-principles evaluation of the zero-point renormalization of band edges beyond the adiabatic approximation. For materials with light elements, the band gap renormalization is often larger than 0.3 eV, and up to 0.7 eV. This effect cannot be ignored if accurate band gaps are sought. For infrared-active materials, global agreement with available experimental data is obtained only when non-adiabatic effects are taken into account. They even dominate zero-point renormalization for many materials, as shown by a generalized Fr\"ohlich model that includes multiple phonon branches, anisotropic and degenerate electronic extrema, whose range of validity is established by comparison with first-principles results., Comment: Note that the supplementary material, included in the main file, is structured differently than in the published version, with a different numbering scheme

We present abundances of 21 elements in a sample of 13 bright FG dwarfs drawn from the Kepler LEGACY sample to examine the applicability of the abundance-age relations to stars with properties strongly departing from solar. These stars have precise asteroseismic ages that can be compared to the abundance-based estimates. We analyse the well-known binary 16 Cyg AB for validation purposes and confirm the existence of a slight metal enhancement (~0.02 dex) in the primary, which might arise from planetary formation/ingestion. We draw attention to systematic errors in some widely-used catalogues of non-seismic parameters that may significantly bias asteroseismic inferences. In particular, we find evidence that the ASPCAP Teff scale used for the APOKASC catalogue is too cool for dwarfs and that the [Fe/H] values are underestimated by ~0.1 dex. We compare seismic ages to those inferred from empirical abundance-age relations based on ages from PARSEC isochrones and abundances obtained in the framework of the HARPS-GTO program. These calibrations take into account a dependency with the stellar effective temperature, metallicity, and/or mass. We find that the seismic and abundance-based ages differ on average by 1.5-2 Gyrs, while taking into account a dependency with one or two stellar parameters in the calibrations leads to a global improvement of up to ~0.5 Gyr. However, even in that case we find that seismic ages are systematically larger by ~0.7 Gyr. We argue that it may be ascribed to a variety of causes including the presence of small zero-point offsets between our abundances and those used to construct the calibrations or to the choice of the set of theoretical isochrones. Eclipsing binary stars allow derivation of accurate and precise masses and radii. When they reside in star clusters, properties of even higher precision, along with additional information, can be extracted. Asteroseismology of solar-like oscillations offers similar possibilities for single stars. We improve the previously established properties of the Hyades eclipsing binary HD27130 and re-assess the asteroseismic properties of the giant star $\epsilon$ Tau. The physical properties of these members of the Hyades are then used to constrain the helium content and age of the cluster. New multi-colour light curves were combined with multi-epoch radial velocities to yield masses and radii of HD27130. $T_{\rm eff}$ was derived from spectroscopy and photometry, and verified using the Gaia parallax. We estimate the cluster age from re-evaluated asteroseismic properties of $\epsilon$ Tau while using HD27130 to constrain the helium content. The masses and radii, and $T_{\rm eff}$ of HD 27130 were found to be $M=1.0245\pm0.0024 M_{\odot}$, $R=0.9226\pm0.015 R_{\odot}$, $T_{\rm eff}=5650\pm50$ K for the primary, and $M=0.7426\pm0.0016 M_{\odot}$, $R=0.7388\pm0.026 R_{\odot}$, $T_{\rm eff}=4300\pm100$ K for the secondary component. Our re-evaluation of $\epsilon$ Tau suggests that the previous literature estimates are trustworthy, and that the Hipparcos parallax is more reliable than the Gaia DR2 parallax. The helium content of HD27130 and thus of the Hyades is found to be $Y=0.27$ but with significant model dependence. Correlations with the adopted metallicity results in a robust helium enrichment law with $\frac{\Delta Y}{\Delta Z}$ close to 1.2. We estimate the age of the Hyades to be 0.9 $\pm$ 0.1 (stat) $\pm$ 0.1 (sys) Gyr in slight tension with recent age estimates based on the cluster white dwarfs. The recently discovered Sr[Li$_2$Al$_2$O$_2$N$_2$]:Eu$^{2+}$ red phosphor, candidate for the next generation of eco-efficient white light-emitting diodes, exhibits excellent emission spectral position and exceptionally small linewidth. It belongs to the UCr$_4$C$_4$-structure family of phosphors, containing many potential candidates commercial phosphors, whose small linewidth, tentatively ascribed to the high-symmetry cuboid environment of the doping site, has drawn the attention of researchers in the last five years. We use density functional theory, $\Delta$SCF method and configuration coordinate models (CCM) to provide a complete characterization of this material. Using a multi-dimensional CCM, an accurate description of the coupling of the vibronic structure with the electronic 5d$\rightarrow$4f transition is obtained, including the partial Huang-Rhys factors and frequency of the dominant modes. We show that, in addition to the first-coordination shell cuboid deformation mode, low-frequency phonon modes involving chains of strontium atoms along the tetragonal axis shape the emission linewidth in Sr[Li$_2$Al$_2$O$_2$N$_2$]:Eu$^{2+}$. This finding sheds new light on the emission properties of UCr$_4$C$_4$-structure phosphors, possessing similar Ca/Sr/Ba channel. Our approach provides a robust theoretical framework to systematically study the emission spectra of such Eu-doped phosphors, and predict candidates with expected similar or even sharper linewidth., Comment: Published version

The metastable hexagonal-diamond phase of Si and Ge (and of SiGe alloys) displays superior optical properties with respect to the cubic-diamond one. The latter is the most stable and popular one: growing hexagonal-diamond Si or Ge without working at extreme conditions proved not to be trivial. Recently, however, the possibility of growing hexagonal-diamond group-IV nanowires has been demonstrated, attracting attention on such systems. Based on first-principle calculations we show that the surface energy of the typical facets exposed in Si and Ge nanowires is lower in the hexagonal-diamond phase than in cubic ones. By exploiting a synergic approach based also on a recent state-of-the-art interatomic potential and on a simple geometrical model, we investigate the relative stability of nanowires in the two phases up to few tens of nm in radius, highlighting the surface-related driving force and discussing its relevance in recent experiments. We also explore the stability of Si and Ge core-shell nanowires with hexagonal cores (made of GaP for Si nanowires, of GaAs for Ge nanowires). In this case, the stability of the hexagonal shell over the cubic one is also favored by the energy cost associated with the interface linking the two phases. Interestingly, our calculations indicate a critical radius of the hexagonal shell much lower than the one reported in recent experiments, indicating the presence of a large kinetic barrier allowing for the enlargement of the wire in a metastable phase.

In a series of papers, we have recently demonstrated that it is possible to construct stellar structure models that robustly mimic the stratification of multi-dimensional radiative magneto-hydrodynamic simulations at every time-step of the computed evolution. The resulting models offer a more realistic depiction of the near-surface layers of stars with convective envelopes than parameterizations, such as mixing length theory, do. In this paper, we explore how this model improvement impacts on seismic and non-seismic properties of stellar models across the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram. We show that the improved description of the outer boundary layers alters the predicted global stellar properties at different evolutionary stages. In a hare and hound exercise, we show that this plays a key role for asteroseismic analyses, as it, for instance, often shifts the inferred stellar age estimates by more than 10 per cent. Improper boundary conditions may thus introduce systematic errors that exceed the required accuracy of the PLATO space mission. Moreover, we discuss different approximations for how to compute stellar oscillation frequencies. We demonstrate that the so-called gas $\Gamma_1$ approximation performs reasonably well for all main-sequence stars. Using a Monte Carlo approach, we show that the model frequencies of our hybrid solar models are consistent with observations within the uncertainties of the global solar parameters when using the so-called reduced $\Gamma_1$ approximation., Comment: Submitted to MNRAS

The extensive stellar spectroscopic datasets that are available for studies in Galactic Archeaology thanks to, for example, the Gaia-ESO Survey, now benefit from having a significant number of targets that overlap with asteroseismology projects such as Kepler, K2 and CoRoT. Combining the measurements from spectroscopy and asteroseismology allows us to attain greater accuracy with regard to the stellar parameters needed to characterise the stellar populations of the Milky Way. The aim of this Gaia-ESO Survey special project is to produce a catalogue of self-consistent stellar parameters by combining measurements from high-resolution spectroscopy and precision asteroseismology. We carried out an iterative analysis of 90 K2@Gaia-ESO red giants. The spectroscopic values of Teff were used as input in the seismic analysis to obtain log(g) values. The seismic estimates of log(g) were then used to re-determine the spectroscopic values of Teff and [Fe/H]. Only one iteration was required to obtain parameters that are in good agreement for both methods and thus, to obtain the final stellar parameters. A detailed analysis of outliers was carried out to ensure a robust determination of the parameters. The results were then combined with Gaia DR2 data to compare the seismic log(g) with a parallax-based log(g) and to investigate instances of variations in the velocity and possible binaries within the dataset. This analysis produced a high-quality catalogue of stellar parameters for 90 red giant stars observed by both K2 and Gaia-ESO that were determined through iterations between spectroscopy and asteroseismology. We compared the seismic gravities with those based on Gaia parallaxes to find an offset which is similar to other studies that have used asteroseismology. The standard cosmological model ($\Lambda$-CDM) predicts that galaxies are built through hierarchical assembly on cosmological timescales$^{1,2}$. The Milky Way, like other disc galaxies, underwent violent mergers and accretion of small satellite galaxies in its early history. Thanks to Gaia-DR2$^3$ and spectroscopic surveys$^4$, the stellar remnants of such mergers have been identified$^{5-7}$. The chronological dating of such events is crucial to uncover the formation and evolution of the Galaxy at high redshift, but it has so far been challenging owing to difficulties in obtaining precise ages for these oldest stars. Here we combine asteroseismology -- the study of stellar oscillations -- with kinematics and chemical abundances, to estimate precise stellar ages ($\sim$ 11%) for a sample of stars observed by the $\mathit{Kepler}$ space mission$^8$. Crucially, this sample includes not only some of the oldest stars that were formed inside the Galaxy, but also stars formed externally and subsequently accreted onto the Milky Way. Leveraging this resolution in age, we provide compelling evidence in favour of models in which the Galaxy had already formed a substantial population of its stars (which now reside mainly in its thick disc) before the in-fall of the satellite galaxy Gaia-Enceladus/Sausage$^{5,6}$ around 10 billions years ago, Comment: Updated with the final version accepted for publication as a Letter in Nature Astronomy (29 pages, 10 figures, 2 tables, including main article and methods section). [Abridged] Ensemble studies of red-giant stars with exquisite asteroseismic, spectroscopic, and astrometric constraints offer a novel opportunity to recast and address long-standing questions concerning the evolution of stars and of the Galaxy. Here, we infer masses and ages for nearly 5400 giants with available Kepler light curves and APOGEE spectra, and discuss some of the systematics that may affect the accuracy of the inferred stellar properties. First, we look at age-chemical-abundances relations. We find a dearth of young, metal-rich stars, and the existence of a significant population of old (8-9 Gyr), low-[$\alpha$/Fe], super-solar metallicity stars, reminiscent of the age and metallicity of the well-studied open cluster NGC6791. The age-chemo-kinematic properties of these stars indicate that efficient radial migration happens in the thin disk. We find that ages and masses of the nearly 400 $\alpha$-element-rich red-giant-branch (RGB) stars in our sample are compatible with those of an old (~11 Gyr), nearly coeval, chemical-thick disk population. Using a statistical model, we show that 95% of the population was born within ~1.5 Gyr. Moreover, we find a difference in the vertical velocity dispersion between low- and high-[$\alpha$/Fe] populations, confirming their different chemo-dynamical histories. We then exploit the almost coeval $\alpha$-rich population to gain insight into processes that may have altered the mass of a star along its evolution, which are key to improve the mapping of the observed stellar mass to age. We find evidence for a mean integrated RGB mass loss <$\Delta$M>= 0.10 $\pm$ 0.02 Msun and that the occurrence of massive (M $\gtrsim$ 1.1 Msun) $\alpha$-rich stars is of the order of 5% on the RGB, and significantly higher in the RC, supporting the scenario in which most of these stars had undergone interaction with a companion., Comment: accepted for publication in A&A, 26 pages, 24 figures, catalogue available via cds

State-of-the-art stellar structure and evolution codes fail to adequately describe turbulent convection. For stars with convective envelopes, such as red giants, this leads to an incomplete depiction of the surface layers. As a result, the predicted stellar oscillation frequencies are haunted by systematic errors, the so-called surface effect. Different empirically and theoretically motivated correction relations have been proposed to deal with this issue. In this paper, we compare the performance of these surface correction relations for red giant branch stars. For this purpose, we apply the different surface correction relations in asteroseismic analyses of eclipsing binaries and open clusters. In accordance with previous studies of main-sequence stars, we find that the use of different surface correction relations biases the derived global stellar properties, including stellar age, mass, and distance estimates. We furthermore demonstrate that the different relations lead to the same systematic errors for two different open clusters. Our results overall discourage from the use of surface correction relations that rely on reference stars to calibrate free parameters. Due to the demonstrated systematic biasing of the results, the use of appropriate surface correction relations is imperative to any asteroseismic analysis of red giants. Accurate mass, age, and distance estimates for red giants are fundamental when addressing questions that deal with the chemo-dynamical evolution of the Milky Way galaxy. In this way, our results also have implications for fields, such as galactic archaeology, that draw on findings from stellar physics.

We develop a Bayesian Machine Learning framework called BINGO (Bayesian INference for Galactic archaeOlogy) centred around a Bayesian neural network. After being trained on the APOGEE and \emph{Kepler} asteroseismic age data, BINGO is used to obtain precise relative stellar age estimates with uncertainties for the APOGEE stars. We carefully construct a training set to minimise bias and apply BINGO to a stellar population that is similar to our training set. We then select the 17,305 stars with ages from BINGO and reliable kinematic properties obtained from \textit{Gaia} DR2. By combining the age and chemo-kinematical information, we dissect the Galactic disc stars into three components, namely, the thick disc (old, high-[$\alpha$/Fe], [$\alpha$/Fe] $\gtrsim$ 0.12), the thin disc (young, low-[$\alpha$/Fe]) and the Bridge, which is a region between the thick and thin discs. Our results indicate that the thick disc formed at an early epoch only in the inner region, and the inner disc smoothly transforms to the thin disc. We found that the outer disc follows a different chemical evolution pathway from the inner disc. The outer metal-poor stars only start forming after the compact thick disc phase has completed and the star-forming gas disc extended outwardly with metal-poor gas accretion. We found that in the Bridge region the range of [Fe/H] becomes wider with decreasing age, which suggests that the Bridge region corresponds to the transition phase from the smaller chemically well-mixed thick to a larger thin disc with a metallicity gradient., Comment: 11 pages, 11 figures, accepted in MNRAS

The large quantity of high-quality asteroseismic data that obtained from space-based photometric missions and the accuracy of the resulting frequencies motivate a careful consideration of the accuracy of computed oscillation frequencies of stellar models, when applied as diagnostics of the model properties. Aims. Based on models of red-giant stars that have been independently calculated using different stellar evolution codes, we investigate the extent to which the differences in the model calculation affect the model oscillation frequencies. Methods. For each of the models, which cover four different masses and different evolution stages on the red-giant branch, we computed full sets of low-degree oscillation frequencies using a single pulsation code and, from these frequencies, typical asteroseismic diagnostics. In addition, we carried out preliminary analyses to relate differences in the oscillation properties to the corresponding model differences. Results. In general, the differences in asteroseismic properties between the different models greatly exceed the observational precision of these properties, in particular for the nonradial modes whose mixed acoustic and gravity-wave character makes them sensitive to the structure of the deep stellar interior. In some cases, identifying these differences led to improvements in the final models presented here and in Paper I; here we illustrate particular examples of this. Conclusions. Further improvements in stellar modelling are required in order fully to utilise the observational accuracy to probe intrinsic limitations in the modelling. 3C-SiC epitaxially grown on Si displays a large wealth of extended defects. In particular, single, double and triple stacking faults (SFs) are observed in several experiments to coexist. Overabundance of defects has so far limited the exploitation of 3C-SiC/Si for power electronics, in spite of its several ideal properties (mainly in terms of wide gap, high breakdown fields and thermal properties) and the possibility of a direct integration in the Si technology. Here we use a multiscale approach, based on both classical molecular dynamics (MD) simulations and first-principle calculations, to investigate in-depth the origin, nature and properties of most common 3C-SiC/Si(001) extended defects. Our MD simulations reveal a natural path for the formation of partial dislocation complexes terminating both double and triple SF's. MD results are used as input for superior DFT calculations, allowing us to better determine the core structure and to investigate electronic properties. It turns out that the partial dislocation complexes terminating double and triple SFs are responsible for the introduction of electronic states significantly filling the gap. On the other hand, individual partial dislocations terminating single SFs only induce states very close to the gap edge. We conclude that partial dislocation complexes, in particular the most abundant triple ones, are killer defects in terms of favoring leakage currents. Suggestions coming from theory/simulations for devising a strategy to lower their occurrence are discussed.

The frequency, $\nu_{\rm max}$, at which the envelope of pulsation power peaks for solar-like oscillators is an important quantity in asteroseismology. We measure $\nu_{\rm max}$ for the Sun using 25 years of Sun-as-a-Star Doppler velocity observations with the Birmingham Solar-Oscillations Network (BiSON), by fitting a simple model to binned power spectra of the data. We also apply the fit to Sun-as-a-Star Doppler velocity data from GONG and GOLF, and photometry data from VIRGO/SPM on the ESA/NASA SOHO spacecraft. We discover a weak but nevertheless significant positive correlation of the solar $\nu_{\rm max}$ with solar activity. The uncovered shift between low and high activity, of $\simeq 25\,\rm \mu Hz$, translates to an uncertainty of 0.8 per cent in radius and 2.4 per cent in mass, based on direct use of asteroseismic scaling relations calibrated to the Sun. The mean $\nu_{\rm max}$ in the different datasets is also clearly offset in frequency.
