Abstract DNA from the environment (eDNA) has been increasingly used as a new tool to conduct biodiversity assessment. Because of its noninvasive and less time‐consuming nature, many studies of recent years solely rely on this information to establish a species inventory. eDNA metabarcoding has been shown to be an efficient method in aquatic ecosystems, especially for fish. However, detection efficiency is not clear for mammals. Using the existing literature, we conducted a meta‐analysis to investigate if eDNA metabarcoding allows greater detection success compared to conventional surveys (such as field surveys, camera traps, etc.). Although only 28 articles were retrieved, showing the lack of comparative studies, still representing more than 900 taxa detected, we found that detection success was method dependent, but most importantly varies on the taxonomy of the targeted taxa. eDNA metabarcoding performed poorly for bats compared to the traditional mist nests. However, strong detection overlaps were found between conventional surveys and eDNA for large‐bodied mammals such as ungulates, primates, and carnivores. Overall, we argue that using both molecular and field approaches can complement each other and can maximize the most accurate biodiversity assessment and there is much room for metabarcoding optimization to reach their full potential compared to traditional surveys.

El diseño de edificios escolares ha estado basado en organizaciones tipológicas que reflejan los paradigmas de una época. En Argentina, históricamente, el Estado ha participado de forma activa en la construcción y conservación de dichos establecimientos. En San Juan, dentro de la población de escuelas, se reconoce uno que sobresale en número de repetición, y que fue elaborado a nivel nacional en el marco del Plan Quinquenal (1945 a 1950). Estos edificios escolares fueron erigidos en la época de reconstrucción post-terremoto de 1944. El objetivo del presente artículo es identificar y localizar las infraestructuras correspondientes a este período histórico y reflexionar sobre su estado de conservación actual. Asimismo, se lleva a cabo un análisis tipológico respecto a los aspectos funcionales, morfológicos y tecnológicos característicos. Se concluye que dichas escuelas demandan acciones continuas de mantenimiento y consolidación que les permitan alcanzar condiciones de seguridad y habitabilidad para seguir siendo parte del sistema educativo. Además, se insta a que las obras de remodelación y ampliación respeten los lineamientos arquitectónicos originales en cuanto a ritmos y proporciones, y consideren a estos edificios escolares como parte del patrimonio histórico provincial.

64. Supersonic Laser Deposition and LaserForge : process mechanism coating characteristics

LaserForge is a commercial coating process, that uses a pulsed laser to deposit flat sided wire onto a substrate with minimal heat input. Supersonic Laser Deposition (SLD) is an emerging coating technology that can be used as an alternative to existing thermal spray processes. It has the benefit of low temperature, allowing the deposition of nanostructured and temperature sensitive coatings, which is not currently possible with existing thermal spray. This main aim of this work was to undertake an experimental study aimed at identifying the process mechanism used in the LaserForge process. The understanding of the process mechanism could then be applied to process improvements for SLD coatings. As part of this study the bonding mechanisms of both LaserForge and SLD were studied. Initially a laser system to enable the exploration of the LaserForge parameter space was specified and a system set up to enable investigation of LaserForge. The LaserForge process parameter space was characterised using a pulsed laser with Ti-64 on CP aluminium. Successful bonding was achieved with parameters of 10 ms pulse length, 1400 W per pulse and 0.8 mm spot diameter. The process was determined to be a form of welding-based laser cladding, a melt-based process. Following discovery that LaserForge was a melt-based process, the direction of work was changed to focus on the SLD process mechanisms. Several WC-17Co coatings were deposited as a single layer (0.5 mm thick) on carbon steel. The coating cross section morphology was characterised using an optical microscope and scanning electron microscope. A tensile pull off test was used to measure the coating adhesion, and a four-point bend test with acoustic emission was used to monitor the failure of the coating. Plastic failure of the coating was identified, and a test limited adhesion strength in excess of 70 MPa measured. The coating was shown to have a stress-to fracture of approximately 550 MPa in tension, and a reinforcement effect of approximately 100 MPa when compared to the uncoated substrate. The problems with the deposition of the coatings with SLD were investigated and characterised, with the thermal effect from the laser during deposition found to be significant. This work has characterised the mechanism behind the commercial LaserForge process and the deposition challenges of depositing WC-17Co using Supersonic Laser Deposition. The benefit of these advancements will provide guidance for the direction of future work into LaserForge, and Supersonic Laser Deposition of nanostructured and advanced materials.

This comprehensive review explores the intricate aspects of left ventricular thrombus (LVT), a potential complication in both ischemic and non-ischemic cardiomyopathies. It provides a thorough understanding of left ventricular thrombus, revealing its uncommon incidence in the general population (7 cases per 10,000 patients), predominantly linked to ischemic heart diseases (ICMs) at an 80% prevalence rate. Diagnostic tools, notably transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) and cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (CMR), demonstrate varying sensitivity but remain indispensable in specific clinical contexts related to LVT as non-invasive diagnostic modalities. A detailed comparison between ICM patients and those with non-ischemic cardiomyopathy (NICM) who have left ventricular thrombus reveals subtle distinctions with significant clinical implications. This analysis underscores the importance of these imaging techniques in distinguishing between the two conditions. Additionally, we explored the occurrence of LVT in specific non-ischemic cardiomyopathies, including Takotsubo syndrome, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, eosinophilic myocarditis, Chagas disease, cardiac amyloidosis, and several other conditions. The article further delves into anticoagulation strategies, thoroughly examining their impact on LVT regression and patient outcomes. Pharmacological interventions, with a focus on direct oral anticoagulants, emerge as promising alternatives; however, there is insufficient information on their efficiency and safety, especially in NICM population. In conclusion, this review highlights the complex nature of LVT, incorporating a range of etiopathogenic factors, diagnostic complexities, and evolving therapeutic approaches. It emphasizes the pressing need for ongoing research in this field.

We show efficient laser driven proton acceleration up to 14MeV from a 50 $\mu$m thick cryogenic hydrogen ribbon. Pulses of the short pulse laser ELFIE at LULI with a pulse length of $\approx$ 350 fs at an energy of 8 J per pulse are directed onto the target. The results are compared to proton spectra from metal and plastic foils with different thicknesses and show a similar good performance both in maximum energy as well as in proton number. Abstract A contiguous carbonate‐rich hydroxyapatite microcoating in a microfluidic device represents a substrate that has chemical and structural similarity to bone mineral. The present work describes a low‐temperature method to deposit a carbonate‐rich hydroxyapatite microcoating on a glass slide and its incorporation within the microchannels of a microfluidic device. A glass slide is covered/masked with polypropylene‐based tape and CaCO3 nanoparticles are deposited on exposed areas by convective self assembly. The precursor CaCO3 is converted to carbonate‐rich hydroxyapatite by dissolution‐recrystallization in phosphate‐buffered saline. The microcoating is aligned/incorporated within a microchannel when the underlying glass is bonded to a polydimethylsiloxane structure with the device layout. X‐ray diffraction, laser Raman microspectroscopy, and X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy indicate that the microcoating was comprised of carbonate‐rich hydroxyapatite. Scanning electron microscopy and 3D laser confocal microscopy showed that was comprised of nanocrystalline rod‐like clusters that collectively exhibit a thickness of ∼20 µm. Monocultures/cocultures of osteoblast‐lineage (MC3T3‐E1, MG63) and preosteoclast‐lineage (RAW 264.7) cells were performed. Osteoblast‐lineage cells adhered to the microcoating and deposited an extracellular matrix of collagen fibrils and mineral accretions. Mineralization was detected in/near the inlet wells. The microcoating is analogous to bone mineral and could be applied to various layouts and mineral systems.

We address the problem of American Sign Language fingerspelling recognition in the wild, using videos collected from websites. We introduce the largest data set available so far for the problem of fingerspelling recognition, and the first using naturally occurring video data. Using this data set, we present the first attempt to recognize fingerspelling sequences in this challenging setting. Unlike prior work, our video data is extremely challenging due to low frame rates and visual variability. To tackle the visual challenges, we train a special-purpose signing hand detector using a small subset of our data. Given the hand detector output, a sequence model decodes the hypothesized fingerspelled letter sequence. For the sequence model, we explore attention-based recurrent encoder-decoders and CTC-based approaches. As the first attempt at fingerspelling recognition in the wild, this work is intended to serve as a baseline for future work on sign language recognition in realistic conditions. This system paper presents the Topology ToolKit (TTK), a software platform designed for topological data analysis in scientific visualization. TTK provides a unified, generic, efficient, and robust implementation of key algorithms for the topological analysis of scalar data, including: critical points, integral lines, persistence diagrams, persistence curves, merge trees, contour trees, Morse-Smale complexes, fiber surfaces, continuous scatterplots, Jacobi sets, Reeb spaces, and more. TTK is easily accessible to end users due to a tight integration with ParaView. It is also easily accessible to developers through a variety of bindings (Python, VTK/C++) for fast prototyping or through direct, dependence-free, C++, to ease integration into pre-existing complex systems. While developing TTK, we faced several algorithmic and software engineering challenges, which we document in this paper. In particular, we present an algorithm for the construction of a discrete gradient that complies to the critical points extracted in the piecewise-linear setting. This algorithm guarantees a combinatorial consistency across the topological abstractions supported by TTK, and importantly, a unified implementation of topological data simplification for multi-scale exploration and analysis. We also present a cached triangulation data structure, that supports time efficient and generic traversals, which self-adjusts its memory usage on demand for input simplicial meshes and which implicitly emulates a triangulation for regular grids with no memory overhead. Finally, we describe an original software architecture, which guarantees memory efficient and direct accesses to TTK features, while still allowing for researchers powerful and easy bindings and extensions. TTK is open source (BSD license) and its code, online documentation and video tutorials are available on TTK's website.
