This article assesses the lasting impact of the work of historian Joan Scott by reviewing the history of gender as a historical concept. Scott's essay "Gender: A Useful Category of Historical Analysis," helped stimulate intensive reconsideration of the role of gender throughout history and established it as a valid analytic category. Scott suggested that gender relationships informed other aspects of society such as politics and international affairs. Many feminist historians felt Scott's ideas rendered patriarchal oppression and historical inequality an abstraction.
