Abstract

More than 800 published genetic association studies have implicated dozens of potential risk loci in Parkinson's disease (PD). To facilitate the interpretation of these findings, we have created a dedicated online resource, PDGene, that comprehensively collects and meta-analyzes all published studies in the field. A systematic literature screen of ∼27,000 articles yielded 828 eligible articles from which relevant data were extracted. In addition, individual-level data from three publicly available genome-wide association studies (GWAS) were obtained and subjected to genotype imputation and analysis. Overall, we performed meta-analyses on more than seven million polymorphisms originating either from GWAS datasets and/or from smaller scale PD association studies. Meta-analyses on 147 SNPs were supplemented by unpublished GWAS data from up to 16,452 PD cases and 48,810 controls. 25th European Photovoltaic Solar Energy Conference and Exhibition / 5th World Conference on Photovoltaic Energy Conversion, 6-10 September 2010, Valencia, Spain; 1520-1523, One of the most important parameters in crystal growth is the velocity of the moving solid/liquid interface. A common technique to detect the position of the solid/liquid interface is the sequential mechanical touching of the solidification front using a rod. The obvious disadvantage is that the solid/liquid interface can be disturbed during these measurements. Therefore, a sensor based on the ultrasound method was tested as a contactless, in-situ detection technique of the crystal growth interface. The setup consists of a standard ultrasonic transducer, which is positioned on top of a high temperature resistant ultrasonic waveguide. The waveguide itself is dipped into the silicon melt, in order to transfer the ultrasonic signal from the transducer through the melt. The signal can then be reflected either at the bottom of the crucible or at the solid/liquid interface. First measurements using this ultrasound diagnostic tool were performed. As a first prove the speed of sound in liquid silicon was measured. The obtained value corresponds well to published data. In a second experiment the growth rate was determined in/situ during directional solidification of multicrystalline silicon. The measured growth rate correlates well with the value obtained from mechanical touching of the interface. The deviations of the growth rate obtained by these two methods will be discussed.

58. Application of a thermogravimetric technique for the determination of low nitrogen solubilities in metals

Abstract

A thermogravimetric technique was explored in order to precisely investigate the low nitrogen solubilities in metals. The thermogravimetry (TG) set-up is presented in detail. By the optimization of the set-up, a good baseline (noise level < 2 mu g, curve drift: +/- 1-4 mu g/h) was obtained. The measurements of nitrogen solubility in iron are described. The weight signal arising from the nitrogen dissolved in iron was recorded continuously as a function of time under various experimental conditions. The nitrogen solubility can be calculated from the weight change between the beginning of nitrogen introduction and the steady state (equilibrium). There is a good agreement between the present measurements and the data in the litetature determined by alternative methods such as chemical analyses of quenched samples, Sieverts' method as well as thermogravimetric technique. In addition, a so-called isothermal stepping TG process shows that the TG set-up has a sufficient sensitivity to display the effect of the phase transformation of iron from body-centered cubic phase to face-centered cubic phase on the nitrogen solubility.

59. Morphology and microstructure of a-plane GaN layers grown by MOVPE and by low pressure solution growth (LPSG)

Abstract

In this paper alpha-plane GaN-layers, grown by two different techniques are compared, mainly focusing on the surface morphology and microstructure of the samples: Layers grown by metal organic vapor phase epitaxy (MOVPE) exhibit a flat surface interrupted by a certain number of pits with triangular shape. In contrast, specimens processed by LPSG developed a rough surface with a roof like morphology. The morphology is discussed in view to the facetting behaviour of the GaN. The observed thickness of the layers implies, that growth in this direction is slightly faster compared to the regular c-plane growth. TEM investigations showed that the microstructure of the a-plane samples is dominated by a high density of dislocations and stacking faults. In photoluminescence measurements a slightly different characteristic was seen for the materials grown by the two techniques.

Abstract

We report the STAR measurement of phi meson production in Au + Au and p + p collisions at root s(NN) = 200 GeV. Using the event mixing technique, the phi spectra and yields are obtained at mid-rapidity for five centrality bins in Au + Au collisions and for non-singly-diffractive p + p collisions. It is found that the phi transverse momentum distributions from Au + An collisions are better fitted with a single-exponential while the p + p spectrum is better described by a double-exponential distribution. The measured nuclear modification factors indicate that phi production in central An + An collisions is suppressed relative to peripheral collisions when scaled by the number of binary collisions (< N-bin>). The systematics of < p(t)> versus centrality and the constant phi/K- ratio versus beam species, centrality, and collision energy rule out kaon coalescence as the dominant mechanism for phi production. Abstract

BRCA1 is a susceptibility gene for breast and ovarian cancer with growth-inhibitory activity for which the mechanism of action remains unclear. When introduced into cells, BRCA1 inhibits growth of some but not all cell lines. In an attempt to uncover the mechanism of growth suppression by BRCA1, we examined a panel of cell lines for their ability to reduce colony outgrowth in response to BRCA1 overexpression. Of all variables tested, only those cells with wild-type pRb were sensitive to BRCA1-induced growth suppression. In cells with an intact rb gene, inactivation of pRb by HPV E7 abrogates the growth arrest imposed by BRCA1. In accordance with these observations, we found that BRCA1 could not suppress BrdUrd uptake in primary fibroblasts from rb−/− mice and exhibited an intermediate ability to inhibit DNA synthesis in rb+/− as compared with rb+/+ cells. We further found that the BRCA1 protein complexes with the hypophosphorylated form of pRb. This binding is localized to amino acids 304–394 of BRCA1 protein and requires the ABC domain of pRb. In-frame deletion of BRCA1 fragment involved in interaction with pRb completely abolished the growth-suppressive property of BRCA1. Although it has been reported that BRCA1 interacts with p53, we find the p53 status did not affect the ability of BRCA1 to suppress colony formation. Our data suggest that the growth suppressor function of BRCA1 depends, at least in part, on Rb.

Abstract

Voraussetzung für die Entwicklung und Produktion von Werkstoffen, die hohe mechanische Eigenschaften mit hoher Verschleißfestigkeit und günstigen elektrophysikalischen Eigenschaften verbinden, ist die Kenntnis des Einflusses der Art der Verstärkungskomponente sowie der Größe und Menge der eingelagerten Partikel auf das Sinterverhalten und die Materialeigenschaften. Daher sollten die Zusammenhänge von Verdichtung, Gefüge und Eigenschaften von durch Drucksintern und Heißpressen hergestellten Si3N4/Ti(C,N)- und Si3N4/TiN-Verbundwerkstoffen aufgeklärt werden. Ausführlich wird die Versuchsdurchführung beschrieben; Merkmale der Ausgangsstoffe und die Werkstoffzusammensetzungen sind in Tabellen aufgelistet. Untersucht wurde die Abhängigkeit des Verdichtungsverhaltens vom TiN-Gehalt und der Partikelgröße, der Einfluß des C-Gehalts im Ti(C,N) auf die Verdichtung. Das Gefüge der Werkstoffe wurde hinsichtlich Dicke und Streckungsgrad der beta-Si3N4-Matrixkörner sowie der Verteilung und Größe der Ti(C,N)-Partikel in Abhängigkeit von den Verdichtungsprozessen analysiert. Korreliert werden kann die Verteilung und Größe der eingelagerten Partikel mit der Oxidationsbeständigkeit der Materialien. Wenig Einfluß hat der TiN-Gehalt auf das Verschleißverhalten beim Drehen von Grauguß und Stahl. Eine Verbesserung des Schneidverhaltens (unterbrochener Schnitt von Stahl) kann bei Werkstoffen mit 40 bis 50 Masse-% TiN beobachtet werden.

Abstract

We report the STAR measurement of phi meson production in Au + Au and p + p collisions at root s(NN) = 200 GeV. Using the event mixing technique, the phi spectra and yields are obtained at mid-rapidity for five centrality bins in Au + Au collisions and for non-singly-diffractive p + p collisions. It is found that the phi transverse momentum distributions from Au + An collisions are better fitted with a single-exponential while the p + p spectrum is better described by a double-exponential distribution. The measured nuclear modification factors indicate that phi production in central An + An collisions is suppressed relative to peripheral collisions when scaled by the number of binary collisions (< N-bin>). The systematics of < p(t)> versus centrality and the constant phi/K- ratio versus beam species, centrality, and collision energy rule out kaon coalescence as the dominant mechanism for phi production. Abstract

Fibrin glue pleurodesis has proven effective in the management of malignant pleural effusions. In a first study we compared two agents in 20 selected patients who provided optimal preconditions for this procedure. All patients had a complete drainage of the pleural space and a total expansion of the lung following pleural drainage. Tetracycline and fibrin glue were installed in four different positions of the patient body. This technique resulted in a complete obliteration of the pleural space in 80%–90% of the patients. A consecutive study with 22 unselected patients who were treated with fibrin glue in the same technique did not confirm these good results. In this group only 71% had a successful pleurodesis; however, in the majority of patients (45%) only a partial obliteration of the pleural space was achieved. Retrospective analysis of our data reveals that essential requirements for successful pleurodesis are a complete drainage of pleural effusion, total reexpansion of the lung, and diaphragmai location of the catheter tip. In patients with suboptimal preconditions we therefore prefer different agents such as tetracycline for pleurodesis.

Abstract

The Pale di San Martino and Pale di San Lucano (referred to together as the 'Pale') are remnants of an originally more extensive carbonate platform in the Dolomite Mountains of northern Italy. The platforms are composed of Middle Triassic dolomites and limestones up to 1.6km thick. Limestones comprise 2-3% of the platform carbonates and are restricted to narrow corridors (tens to a few hundred metres wide, hundreds of metres long and high) within the dolomite. The mainly sucrosic dolomites of the Pale are interpreted as the result of recrystallization of a depositional, nearly stoichiometric Mg calcite under burial temperatures of ca. 40-70°C. The principal arguments are: The quantitative composition indicates that all platform carbonates are composed mainly of micritic crusts (45%; boundstone fabric prevails) and early cement (35%; microcrystalline, fibrous). The platform carbonates were probably mainly bacterial precipitates and tight at the sediment-water interface (porosities <5%, permeabilities in the micro-Darcy range)., The limestone-dolomite transitions (centimetres to decimetres wide) lack dolomite gradients. The lack of evidence for flowing fluids causing dolomitization suggests stagnant pore waters., The δ13C of average dolomite is 1.3‰ heavier than that of coeval limestone (666 analyses). The difference corresponds to a primary difference of 50mol% MgCO3 and is interpreted as the result of fractionation. It suggests a dolomite precursor of very high Mg calcite, whereas present-day limestone of the Pale was probably deposited as a basically Mg-free polymorph (aragonite and/or calcite)., The dolomite δ18O (+1 to −11‰ VPDB) values show a scatter over the platform thickness and preserve randomly distributed values around 0‰. The scatter is probably due to selective re-setting of δ18O near pore spaces and is mainly a sampling effect., The observation that 87Sr/86Sr ratios (77 analyses) of limestone and dolomite are either slightly higher or lower than Middle Triassic seawater, but almost never 'normal marine', suggests that the platform carbonates of the Pale were deposited from seawater contaminated with artesian freshwater. The limestone corridors are probably caused by artesian springs of somewhat higher than ambient depositional temperature, with low Mg calcite and/or aragonite deposited in or near fracture zones.
