Recruiting endogenous antibodies to the surface of cancer cells using antibody-recruiting molecules has the potential to unleash innate immune effector killing mechanisms against antibody-bound cancer cells. The affinity of endogenous antibodies is relatively low, and many currently explored antibody-recruiting strategies rely on targeting over-expressed receptors, which have not yet been identified in most solid tumors. Here, both challenges are addressed by functionalizing poly(propyleneimine) (PPI) dendrimers with both multiple dinitrophenyl (DNP) motifs, as anti-hapten antibody-recruiting motifs, and myristoyl motifs, as universal phospholipid cell membrane anchoring motifs, to recruit anti-hapten antibodies to cell surfaces. By exploiting the multivalency of the ligand exposure on the dendrimer scaffold, it is demonstrated that dendrimers featuring ten myristoyl and six DNP motifs exhibit the highest antibody-recruiting capacity in vitro. Furthermore, it is shown that treating cancer cells with these dendrimers in vitro marks them for phagocytosis by macrophages in the presence of anti-hapten antibodies. As a proof-of-concept, it is shown that intratumoral injection of these dendrimers in vivo in tumor-bearing mice results in the recruitment of anti-DNP antibodies to the cell surface in the tumor microenvironment. Supramolecular copolymers have typically been studied in the extreme cases, such as self-sorting or highly mixed copolymer systems, while the intermediate systems have been less understood. We have reported the temperature-dependent microstructure in copolymers of triazine- and benzene-derivatives based on charge-transfer interactions with a highly alternating microstructure at low temperatures. Here, we investigate the temperature-dependent copolymerization further and increase the complexity by combining triazine- and benzene-derivatives with opposite preferred helicities. In this case, intercalation of the benzene-derivative into the triazine-derivative assemblies causes a helical inversion. The inversion of the net helicity was rationalized by comparing the mismatch penalties of the individual monomers, which indicated that the benzene-derivative dictates the helical screw-sense of the supramolecular copolymers. Surprisingly, this was not reflected in further investigations of slightly modified triazine- and benzene-derivatives, thus highlighting that the outcome is a subtle balance between structural features, where small differences can be amplified due to the competitive nature of the interactions. Supramolecular building blocks assembling into helical aggregates are ubiquitous in the current literature, yet the role of solvents in these supramolecular polymerizations often remains elusive. Here, we present a systematic study that quantifies solvent-supramolecular polymer compatibility using the Hansen solubility parameters (δ D , δ H , and δ P ). We first studied the solubility space of the supramolecular building block triazine-1,3,5-tribenzenecarboxamide S -T . Due to its amphiphilic nature, a dual-sphere model based on 58 solvents was applied describing the solubility space of the monomeric state (green sphere) and supramolecular polymer state (blue sphere). To our surprise, further in-depth spectroscopic and morphological studies unveiled a distinct solubility region in-between the two spheres giving rise to the formation of higher-order aggregated structures. This phenomenon occurs due to subtle differences in polarity between the solvent and the side chains and highlights the solvent-induced pathway complexity of supramolecular polymerizations. Subsequent variations in concentration and temperature led to the expansion and contraction of both solubility spheres providing two additional features to tune the monomer and supramolecular polymer solubility. Finally, we applied our dual-sphere model on structurally disparate monomers, such as Zn-porphyrin ( S -P ) and triphenylamine ( S -A ), demonstrating the generality of the model and the importance of the supramolecular monomer design in connection with the solvent used. This work unravels the solvent-induced pathway complexity of discotic supramolecular building blocks using a parametrized approach in which interactions between the solvent and solute play a crucial role.

Amplification of asymmetry in complex molecular systems results from a delicate interplay of chiral supramolecular structures and their chemical reactivity. In this work, we show how the helicity of supramolecular assemblies can be controlled by performing a non-stereoselective methylation reaction on comonomers. By methylating chiral glutamic acid side chains in benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxamide (BTA) derivatives to form methyl esters, the assembly properties are modulated. As reacted comonomers, the methyl ester-BTAs induce a stronger bias in the screw-sense of helical fibers predominantly composed of stacked achiral alkyl-BTA monomers. Hence, applying the in situ methylation in a system with the glutamic acid-BTA comonomer induces asymmetry amplification. Moreover, mixing small quantities of enantiomers of glutamic acid-BTA and glutamate methyl ester-BTA in the presence of the achiral alkyl-BTAs leads to deracemization and inversion of the helical structures in solution via the in situ reaction toward a thermodynamic equilibrium. Theoretical modeling suggests that the observed effects are caused by enhanced comonomer interactions after the chemical modification. Our presented methodology enables on-demand control over asymmetry in ordered functional supramolecular materials.

Amide-based discotic supramolecular organic materials are of interest for fundamental understanding of cooperative self-assembly and collective dipole switching mechanisms as well as for practically relevant ferroelectric and piezoelectric properties. Here, we show how replacing amides (dipole moment of ∼3.5 D) with thioamides (∼5.1 D) as dipolar moieties in the archetypal C 3 -symmetric discotic molecule BTA leads to ferroelectric materials with a higher remnant polarization and lower coercive field. The thioamide-based materials also demonstrate a rare negative piezoelectricity and a previously predicted, yet never experimentally observed, polarization reversal via asymmetric intermediate states, that is, ferrielectric switching.

Here, we report an anomalous pathway complexity in the supramolecular polymerization of a chiral monomer, which displays an unusual chiroptical feature that does not follow any of the known stereochemical rules such as "chiral self-sorting" and "majority rule". We newly developed a planar-chiral ferrocene-cored tetratopic pyridyl monomer FcL , which underwent AgBF 4 -mediated supramolecular polymerization to give nanotubes FcNT s composed of metal-organic nanorings FcNR s. Although FcNR s must be homochiral because of a strong geometrical constraint, FcNR s were formed even efficiently from racemic FcL and AgBF 4 . Detailed studies revealed the presence of two competing pathways for producing homochiral FcNR s as the constituents of FcNT s: (i) spontaneous cyclization of initially formed acyclic polymers -[ FcL -Ag + ] n - and (ii) template ( FcNR )-assisted cyclization via a Ag + ···Ag + metallophilic interaction. The dominance of the two pathways changes depending on the % ee of chiral FcL . Namely, when the % ee of FcL is high, -[ FcL -Ag + ] n - must contain sufficiently long homochiral sequences that can be readily cyclized into FcNR s. Meanwhile, when the % ee of FcL is low, the homochiral sequences in -[ FcL -Ag + ] n - must be short and therefore are hardly eligible for spontaneous cyclization. Why were FcNR s formed? Even though the probability is very low, homochiral -[ FcL -Ag + ] n - can be statistically generated and undergo spontaneous cyclization to give FcNR s minutely. We found that FcNR s can be amplified by heterochirally templating their own synthesis using metallophilic interaction. Because of this stereochemical preference, the growth of FcNR s into FcNT s via the template-assisted mechanism occurs only when both ( R,R ) FcL and ( S,S ) FcL are present in the polymerization system.

Efficient energy transport over long distances is essential for optoelectronic and light-harvesting devices. Although self-assembled nanofibers of organic molecules are shown to exhibit long exciton diffusion lengths, alignment of these nanofibers into films with large, organized domains with similar properties remains a challenge. Here, it is shown how the functionalization of C 3 -symmetric carbonyl-bridged triarylamine trisamide (CBT) with oligodimethylsiloxane (oDMS) side chains of discrete length leads to fully covered surfaces with aligned domains up to 125 × 70 µm 2 in which long-range exciton transport takes place. The nanoscale morphology within the domains consists of highly ordered nanofibers with discrete intercolumnar spacings within a soft amorphous oDMS matrix. The oDMS prevents bundling of the CBT fibers, reducing the number of defects within the CBT columns. As a result, the columns have a high degree of coherence, leading to exciton diffusion lengths of a few hundred nanometers with exciton diffusivities (≈0.05 cm 2 s -1 ) that are comparable to those of a crystalline tetracene. Complexity in supramolecular polymer systems arises from interactions between different components, including solvent molecules. By varying their concentration or temperature in such multicomponent systems, complex phenomena can occur such as thermally bisignate and dilution-induced assembly of supramolecular polymers. Herein, we demonstrate that both these phenomena emerge from the same underlying interaction mechanism between the components. As a model system, amide-decorated supramolecular polymers of porphyrins were investigated in combination with aliphatic alcohols as hydrogen-bond scavengers, and thermodynamic mass-balance models were applied to map the three-dimensional assembly landscapes. These studies unveiled that the interaction between hydrogen-bond scavengers and monomers is temperature-dependent and becomes dominant at high monomer concentrations. With these insights, we could exploit competitive monomer-alcohol interactions to prompt the dilution-induced assembly of various common monomers as well as bisignate assembly events. Moreover, kinetic insights were obtained by navigating through the assembly landscape. Similar to phase diagrams of covalent polymers, these assembly landscapes provide a comprehensive picture of supramolecular polymerizations, which helps to precisely regulate the system properties. The generality of this approach using assembly landscapes makes it relevant for any supramolecular system, and this enhanced control will open the door to build complex and functional supramolecular polymer systems.

In their thermotropic liquid-crystalline state, molecular semiconductors can show charge transport with high carrier mobility. Polymerization of the corresponding mesogens into a cross-linked network often deteriorates the charge transport. Here, we report that mesogens consisting of a terthiophene core and discrete oligodimethylsiloxane side-chains terminated by acrylate units can be photopolymerized in the columnar phase with retention of nanoscale order and charge transport capabilities. We argue that the strong tendency for microphase segregation protects the semiconducting block from reacting with free radicals during polymerization. This work provides new insights into the design of electroactive materials with charge transport properties.

The desire to construct complex molecular systems is driven by the need for technological (r)evolution and our intrinsic curiosity to comprehend the origin of life. Supramolecular chemists tackle this challenge by combining covalent and noncovalent reactions leading to multicomponent systems with emerging complexity. However, this synthetic strategy often coincides with difficult preparation protocols and a narrow window of suitable conditions. Here, we report on unsuspected observations of our group that highlight the impact of subtle "irregularities" on supramolecular systems. Based on the effects of pathway complexity, minute amounts of water in organic solvents or small impurities in the supramolecular building block, we discuss potential pitfalls in the study of complex systems. The combination of covalent and non-covalent synthesis is omnipresent in nature and potentially enables access to new materials. Yet, the fundamental principles that govern such a synthesis are barely understood. Here, we demonstrate how even simple reaction mixtures behave surprisingly complex when covalent reactions are coupled to self-assembly processes. Specifically, we study the reaction behavior of a system in which the in situ formation of discotic benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxamide (BTA) monomers is linked to an intertwined non-covalent reaction network including self-assembly into helical BTA polymers. This system shows an unexpected phase-separation behavior in which an interplay of reactant/product concentrations, side-products and solvent purity determines the system composition. Polymer networks crosslinked via non-covalent interactions afford interesting materials for a wide range of applications due to their self-healing capability, recyclability, and tunable material properties. However, when strong non-covalent binding motifs in combination with high crosslink density are used, processing of the materials becomes troublesome because of high viscosities and the formation of insoluble gels. Here, we present an approach to control the processability of grafted polymers containing strong non-covalent interactions by balancing the interplay of intra- and intermolecular hydrogen bonding. A library of copolymers with different degrees of polymerization and content of protected ureido-pyrimidinone-urea (UPy-urea) grafts was prepared. Photo-deprotection in a good solvent like tetrahydrofuran (THF) at low concentrations (≤1 mg mL -1 ) created intramolecularly assembled nanoparticles. Remarkably, the intrinsic viscosity of these nanoparticle solutions was an order of magnitude lower compared to solutions of the intermolecularly assembled analogues, highlighting the crucial role of intra- versus intermolecular interactions. Due to the strong hydrogen bonds between UPy dimers, the intramolecularly assembled structures were kinetically trapped. As a result, the polymer nanoparticles were readily processed into a bulk material, without causing major changes in the morphology as verified by atomic force microscopy. Subsequent intermolecular crosslinking of the nanoparticle film, by heating to temperatures where the hydrogen-bond exchange becomes fast, resulted in a crosslinked network. The reversibility of the hereby obtained polymer networks was shown by retrieving the intramolecularly assembled nanoparticles via redissolution and sonication of the intermolecularly crosslinked film in THF with a small amount of acid. Supramolecular glycopolymers exhibiting inherent dynamicity, tunability, and adaptivity allow us to arrive at a deeper understanding of multivalent carbohydrate-carbohydrate interactions and carbohydrate-protein interactions, both being essential to key biological events. The impacts of the carbohydrate segments in these supramolecular glycopolymers towards their structure, dynamics, and function as biomaterials are addressed in this minireview. Fascinating properties are displayed by synthetic multicomponent supramolecular systems that comprise a manifold of competitive interactions, thereby mimicking natural processes. We present the integration of two reentrant phase transitions based on an unexpected dilution-induced assembly process using supramolecular polymers and surfactants. The co-assembly of the water-soluble benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxamide (BTA-EG 4 ) and a surfactant at a specific ratio yielded small-sized aggregates. These interactions were modeled using the competition between self-sorting and co-assembly of both components. The small-sized aggregates were transformed into supramolecular polymer networks by a twofold dilution in water without changing their ratio. Kinetic experiments show the in situ growth of micrometer-long fibers in the dilution process. We were able to create systems that undergo fully reversible hydrogel-solution-hydrogel-solution transitions upon dilution by introducing another orthogonal interaction.

The introduction of stereogenic centers in supramolecular building blocks is used to unveil subtle changes in supramolecular structure and dynamics over time. Three stereogenic centers based on deuterium atoms were introduced in the side chains of a benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxamide (BTA) resulting in a supramolecular polymer in water that at first glance has a structure and dynamics identical to its achiral counterpart. Using three different techniques, the properties of the double helical polymers are compared after 1 day and 4 weeks. An increase in helical preference is observed over time as well as a decrease in the helical pitch and monomer exchange dynamics. It is proposed that the polymer of the chiral monomer needs time to arrive at its maximal preference in helical bias. These results indicate that the order and tight packing increase over time, while the dynamics of this supramolecular polymer decrease over time, an effect that is typically overlooked but unveiled by the isotopic chirality.

Control over molecular motion is facilitated in materials with highly ordered nanoscale structures. Here we report on the fabrication of cholesteric liquid-crystal networks by circularly polarized light irradiation, without the need for chiral dopant or plasticizer. The polymer network is obtained by photopolymerization of a smectic achiral diacrylate mesogen consisting of an azobenzene core and discrete oligodimethylsiloxane tails. The synchronous helical photoalignment and photopolymerization originate from the cooperative movement of the mesogens ordered in well-defined responsive structures, together with the flexibility of the oligodimethylsiloxane blocks. The resulting thin films show excellent thermal stability and light-induced memory features with reversible responses. Additionally, we demonstrate the fabrication of photo-patterned films of liquid-crystal networks with opposite helical senses. The quasiperiodic structures in metal alloys have been known to depend on the existence of icosahedral order in the melt. Among different phases observed in intermetallics, decagonal quasicrystal (DQC) structures have been identified in many glass-forming alloys yet remain inaccessible in bulk-state condensed soft matters. Via annealing the mixture of two giant molecules, the binary system assemblies into an axial DQC superlattice, which is identified comprehensively with meso-atomic accuracy. Analysis indicates that the DQC superlattice is composed of mesoatoms with an unusually broad volume distribution. The interplays of submesoatomic (molecular) and mesoatomic (supramolecular) local packings are found to play a crucial role in not only the formation of the metastable DQC superlattice but also its transition to dodecagonal quasicrystal and Frank-Kasper σ superlattices., Competing Interests: The authors declare no competing interest., (Copyright © 2022 the Author(s). Multi-component systems often display convoluted behavior, pathway complexity and coupled equilibria. In recent years, several ways to control complex systems by manipulating the subtle balances of interaction energies between the individual components have been explored and thereby shifting the equilibrium between different aggregate states. Here we show the enantioselective chain-capping and dilution-induced supramolecular polymerization with a Zn 2+ -porphyrin-based supramolecular system when going from long, highly cooperative supramolecular polymers to short, disordered aggregates by adding a monotopic Mn 3+ -porphyrin monomer. When mixing the zinc and manganese centered monomers, the Mn 3+ -porphyrins act as chain-cappers for Zn 2+ -porphyrin supramolecular polymers, effectively hindering growth of the copolymer and reducing the length. Upon dilution, the interaction between chain-capper and monomers weakens as the equilibria shift and long supramolecular polymers form again. This dynamic modulation of aggregate morphology and length is achieved through enantioselectivity in the aggregation pathways and concentration-sensitive equilibria. All-atom and coarse-grained molecular simulations provide further insights into the mixing of the species and their exchange dynamics. The assembly of donor-acceptor molecules via charge transfer (CT) interactions gives rise to highly ordered nanomaterials with appealing electronic properties. Here, we present the synthesis and bulk co-assembly of pyrene (Pyr) and naphthalenediimide (NDI) functionalized oligodimethylsiloxanes (oDMS) of discrete length. We tune the donor-acceptor interactions by connecting the pyrene and NDI to the same oligomer, forming a heterotelechelic block molecule (NDI-oDMSPyr), and to two separate oligomers, giving Pyr and NDI homotelechelic block molecules (Pyr-oDMS and NDI-oDMS). Liquid crystalline materials are obtained for binary mixtures of Pyr-oDMS and NDI-oDMS, while crystallization of the CT dimers occurred for the heterotelechelic NDI-oDMS-Pyr block molecule. The synergy between crystallization and phase-segregation coupled with the discrete length of the oDMS units allows for perfect order and sharp interfaces between the insulating siloxane and CT layers composed of crystalline CT dimers. We were able to tune the lamellar domain spacing and donor-acceptor CT interactions by applying pressures up to 6 GPa on the material, making the system promising for soft-material nanotechnologies. These results demonstrate the importance of the molecular design to tune the CT interactions and stability of a CT material.

Dynamic binding events are key to arrive at functionality in nature, and these events are often governed by electrostatic or hydrophobic interactions. Synthetic supramolecular polymers are promising candidates to obtain biomaterials that mimic this dynamicity. Here, we created four new functional monomers based on the benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxamide (BTA) motif. Choline or atropine groups were introduced to obtain functional monomers capable of competing with the cell wall of Streptococcus pneumoniae for binding of essential choline-binding proteins (CBPs). Atropine-functionalized monomers BTA-Atr and BTA-Atr 3 were too hydrophobic to form homogeneous assemblies, while choline-functionalized monomers BTA-Chol and BTA-Chol 3 were unable to form fibers due to charge repulsion. However, copolymerization of BTA-Chol 3 with non-functionalized BTA-(OH) 3 yielded dynamic fibers, similar to BTA-(OH) 3 . These copolymers showed an increased affinity toward CBPs compared to free choline due to multivalent effects. BTA-based supramolecular copolymers are therefore a versatile platform to design bioactive and dynamic supramolecular polymers with novel biotechnological properties.

In the flourishing field of soft robotics, strategies to embody communication and collective motion are scarce. Here we report the synchronized oscillations of thin plastic actuators by an approach reminiscent of the synchronized motion of pendula and metronomes. Two liquid crystalline network oscillators fuelled by light influence the movement of one another and display synchronized oscillations in-phase and anti-phase in a steady state. By observing entrainment between the asymmetric oscillators we demonstrate the existence of coupling between the two actuators. We qualitatively explain the origin of the synchronized motion using a theoretical model and numerical simulations, which suggest that the motion can be tuned by the mechanical properties of the coupling joint. We thus anticipate that the complex synchronization phenomena usually observed in rigid systems can also exist in soft polymeric materials. The use of supramolecular polymers to construct functional biomaterials is gaining more attention due to the tunable dynamic behavior and fibrous structures of supramolecular polymers, which resemble those found in natural systems, such as the extracellular matrix. Nevertheless, to obtain a biomaterial capable of mimicking native systems, complex biomolecules should be incorporated, as they allow one to achieve essential biological processes. In this study, supramolecular polymers based on water-soluble benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxamides (BTAs) were assembled in the presence of hyaluronic acid (HA) both in solution and hydrogel states. The coassembly of BTAs bearing tetra(ethylene glycol) at the periphery ( BTA-OEG 4 ) and HA at different ratios showed strong interactions between the two components that led to the formation of short fibers and heterogeneous hydrogels. BTAs were further covalently linked to HA ( HA-BTA ), resulting in a polymer that was unable to assemble into fibers or form hydrogels due to the high hydrophilicity of HA. However, coassembly of HA-BTA with BTA-OEG 4 resulted in the formation of long fibers, similar to those formed by BTA-OEG 4 alone, and hydrogels were produced with tunable stiffness ranging from 250 to 700 Pa, which is 10-fold higher than that of hydrogels assembled with only BTA-OEG 4 . Further coassembly of BTA-OEG 4 fibers with other polysaccharides showed that except for dextran, all polysaccharides studied interacted with BTA-OEG 4 fibers. The possibility of incorporating polysaccharides into BTA-based materials paves the way for the creation of dynamic complex biomaterials.

Supramolecular copolymers formed by the noncovalent synthesis of multiple components expand the complexity of functional molecular systems. However, varying the composition and microstructure of copolymers through tuning the interactions between building blocks remains a challenge. Here, we report a remarkable discovery of the temperature-dependent supramolecular copolymerization of the two chiral monomers 4,4',4″-(1,3,5-triazine-2,4,6-triyl)tribenzamide ( S -T ) and 4,4',4″-(benzene-1,3,5-triyl)tribenzamide ( S -B ). We first demonstrate in the homopolymerization of the two individual monomers that a subtle change from the central triazine to benzene in the chemical structure of the monomers significantly affects the properties of the resulting homopolymers in solution. Homopolymers formed by S -T exhibit enhanced stability in comparison to S -B . More importantly, through a combination of spectroscopic analysis and theoretical simulation, we reveal the complex process of copolymerization: S -T aggregates into homopolymers at elevated temperature, and upon slow cooling S -B gradually intercalates into the copolymers, to finally give copolymers with almost 80% alternating bonds at 10 °C. The formation of the predominantly alternating copolymers is plausibly contributed by preferred heterointeractions between triazine and benzene cores in S -T and S -B , respectively, at lower temperatures. Overall, this work unravels the complexity of a supramolecular copolymerization process where an intermediate heterointeraction (higher than one homointeraction and lower than the other homointeraction) presents and proposes a general method to elucidate the microstructures of copolymers responsive to temperature changes.

Controlling the reciprocity between chemical reactivity and supramolecular structure is a topic of great interest in the emergence of molecular complexity. In this work, we investigate the effect of a covalent reaction as a trigger to depolymerize a supramolecular assembly. We focus on the impact of an in situ thiol-ene reaction on the (co)polymerization of three derivatives of benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxamide (BTA) monomers functionalized with cysteine, hexylcysteine, and alkyl side chains: Cys-BTA , HexCys-BTA , and a-BTA . Long supramolecular polymers of Cys-BTA can be depolymerized into short dimeric aggregates of HexCys-BTA via the in situ thiol-ene reaction. Analysis of the system by time-resolved spectroscopy and light scattering unravels the fast dynamicity of the structures and the mechanism of depolymerization. Moreover, by intercalating the reactive Cys-BTA monomer into an unreactive inert polymer, the in situ thiol-ene reaction transforms the intercalator into a sequestrator and induces the depolymerization of the unreactive polymer. Supramolecular copolymerizations offer attractive options to introduce structural and functional diversity in supramolecular polymer materials. Yet, general principles and structure-property relationships for rational comonomer design remain lacking. Here, we report on the supramolecular (co)aggregation of a phenylpyridine and bipyridine derivative of a recently reported biphenyl tetracarboxamide-based monomer. We show that both arylpyridines are poor monomers for supramolecular homopolymerizations. However, the two arylpyridines efficiently influence supramolecular polymers of a biphenyl-based polymer. The phenylpyridine derivatives primarily sequestrate biphenyl monomers, while the bipyridine intercalates into the polymers at high temperatures. Thereby, these two poorly homopolymerizing monomers allow for a fine control over the length of the biphenyl-based supramolecular polymers. Controlling supramolecular polymerization is of fundamental importance to create advanced materials and devices. Here we show that the thermodynamic equilibrium of Gd 3+ -bearing supramolecular rod networks is shifted reversibly at room temperature in a static magnetic field of up to 2 T. Our approach opens opportunities to control the structure formation of other supramolecular or coordination polymers that contain paramagnetic ions.

The correlation between molecular structure and mechanism of supramolecular polymerizations is a topic of great interest, with a special focus on the pathway complexity of porphyrin assemblies. Their cooperative polymerization typically yields highly ordered, long 1D polymers and is driven by a combination of π-stacking due to solvophobic effects and hydrogen bonding interactions. Subtle changes in molecular structure, however, have significant influence on the cooperativity factor and yield different aggregate types (J- versus H-aggregates) of different lengths. In this study, the influence of amide connectivity on the self-assembly behavior of porphyrin-based supramolecular monomers was investigated. While in nonpolar solvents, C=O centered monomers readily assemble into helical supramolecular polymers via a cooperative mechanism, their NH centered counterparts form short, non-helical J-type aggregates via an isodesmic pathway. A combination of spectroscopy and density functional theory modelling sheds light on the molecular origins causing this stunning difference in assembly properties and demonstrates the importance of molecular connectivity in the design of supramolecular systems. It has long been surmised that the circular polarization of luminescence (CPL) emitted by a chiral molecule or a molecular assembly should vary with the direction in which the photon is emitted. Despite its potential utility, this anisotropic CPL has not yet been demonstrated at the level of single molecules or supramolecular assemblies. Here we show that conjugated polymers bearing chiral side chains self-assemble into solid microspheres with a twisted bipolar interior, which are formed via liquid-liquid phase separation and subsequent condensation into a cholesteric lyotropic liquid crystalline mesophase. The resultant microspheres, when dispersed in methanol, exhibit CPL with a g lum value as high as 0.23. The microspheres are mechanically robust enough to be handled with a microneedle under ambient conditions, allowing comprehensive examination of the angular anisotropy of CPL. The single microsphere is found to exhibit distinct angularly anisotropic birefringence and CPL with g lum up to ∼0.5 in the equatorial plane, which is 2.5-fold greater than that along the polar axis. Such optically anisotropic solid materials are important for the application to next-generation microlight-emitting and visualizing devices as well as for fundamental optics studies of chiral light-matter interaction.

A comprehensive understanding of the structure, self-assembly mechanism, and dynamics of one-dimensional supramolecular polymers in water is essential for their application as biomaterials. Although a plethora of techniques are available to study the first two properties, there is a paucity in possibilities to study dynamic exchange of monomers between supramolecular polymers in solution. We recently introduced hydrogen/deuterium exchange mass spectrometry (HDX-MS) to characterize the dynamic nature of synthetic supramolecular polymers with only a minimal perturbation of the chemical structure. To further expand the application of this powerful technique some essential experimental aspects have been reaffirmed and the technique has been applied to a diverse library of assemblies. HDX-MS is widely applicable if there are exchangeable hydrogen atoms protected from direct contact with the solvent and if the monomer concentration is sufficiently high to ensure the presence of supramolecular polymers during dilution. In addition, we demonstrate that the kinetic behavior as probed by HDX-MS is influenced by the internal order within the supramolecular polymers and by the self-assembly mechanism., (© 2021 The Authors. In past studies, spin selective transport was observed in polymers and supramolecular structures that are based on homochiral building blocks possessing stereocenters. Here we address the question to what extent chiral building blocks are required for observing the chiral induced spin selectivity (CISS) effect. We demonstrate the CISS effect in supramolecular polymers exclusively containing achiral monomers, where the supramolecular chirality was induced by chiral solvents that were removed from the fibers before measuring. Spin-selective transport was observed for electrons transmitted perpendicular to the fibers' long axis. The spin polarization correlates with the intensity of the CD spectra of the polymers, indicating that the effect is nonlocal. It is found that the spin polarization increases with the samples' thickness and the thickness dependence is the result of at least two mechanisms: the first is the CISS effect, and the second reduces the spin polarization due to scattering. Temperature dependence studies provide the first support for theoretical work that suggested that phonons may contribute to the spin polarization.

Discrete block co-oligomers (BCOs) assemble into highly ordered nanostructures, which adopt a variety of morphologies depending on their environment. Here, we present a series of discrete oligodimethylsiloxane-oligoproline ( o DMS- o Pro) BCOs with varying oligomer lengths and proline end-groups, and study the nanostructures formed in both bulk and solution. The conjugation of oligoprolines to apolar siloxanes permits a study of the aggregation behavior of oligoproline moieties in a variety of solvents, including a highly apolar solvent like methylcyclohexane. The apolar solvent is more reminiscent of the polarity of the siloxane bulk, which gives insights into the supramolecular interactions that govern both bulk and solution assembly processes of the oligoproline. This extensive structural characterization allows the bridging of the gap between solution and bulk assembly. The interplay between the aggregation of the oligoproline block and the phase segregation induced by the siloxane drives the assembly. This gives rise to disordered, micellar microstructures in apolar solution and crystallization-driven lamellar nanostructures in the bulk. While most di- and triblock co-oligomers adopt predictable morphological features, one of them, o DMS 15 - o Pro 6 -NH 2 , exhibits pathway complexity leading to gel formation. The pathway selection in the complex interplay between aggregation and phase segregation gives rise to interesting material properties.

In this work, we describe the physicochemical characterization of amphiphilic glycopolymers synthesized via copper(0)-mediated reversible-deactivation radical polymerization (Cu-RDRP). Depending on the chemical composition of the polymer, these glycopolymers are able to form multi-chain or single-chain polymeric nanoparticles. The folding of these polymers is first of all driven by the amphiphilicity of the glycopolymers and furthermore by the supramolecular formation of helical supramolecular stacks of benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxamides (BTAs) stabilized by threefold hydrogen bonding. The obtained polymeric nanoparticles were subsequently evaluated for their lectin-binding affinity toward a series of mannose- and galactose-binding lectins via surface plasmon resonance. We found that addition of 2-ethylhexyl acrylate to the polymer composition results in compact particles, which translates to a reduction in binding affinity, whereas with the addition of BTAs, the relation between the nature of the particle and the binding ability system becomes more unpredictable.

Solute-solvent interactions are key for the assembly and proper functioning of biomacromolecules and play important roles in many fields of organic and polymer chemistry. Despite numerous reports describing the effects of (chiral) solvents on helical conformations of (supramolecular) polymers, the combination of chiral solvents and chiral monomers is unexplored. Here we report diastereomeric differences in the supramolecular polymerization of enantiomers of chiral triphenylene-2,6,10-tricarboxamides in chiral chlorinated solvents. Competition between the preferences induced by the stereocentres of the assembled monomers and those present in the solvent molecules results in unforeseen temperature-dependent solvation effects. By combining experiments and mathematical modelling, we show that the observed differences between enantiomers originate from the combined additive entropic effects of stereocentres present in the monomer and in the solvent. Remarkably, copolymerizations show that the chiral solvent can bias the copolymer helicity and thereby overrule the helical preference of the monomers. Our results highlight the importance of cumulative solvation effects in supramolecular polymerizations.

The development of new strategies for the preparation of multicomponent supramolecular assemblies is a major challenge on the road to complex functional molecular systems. Here we present the use of a non-porous self-assembled monolayer from uC 33 -NDI-uC 33 , a naphthalenediimide symmetrically functionalized with unsaturated 33 carbon-atom-chains, to prepare bicomponent supramolecular surface systems with a series of alkoxy-pyrene (PyrOR) derivatives at the liquid/HOPG interface. While previous attempts at directly depositing many of these PyrOR units at the liquid/HOPG interface failed, the multicomponent approach through the uC 33 -NDI-uC 33 template enabled control over molecular interactions and facilitated adsorption. The PyrOR deposition restructured the initial uC 33 -NDI-uC 33 monolayer, causing an expansion in two dimensions to accommodate the guests. Squaraine dyes are well known for their strong absorption in the visible regime. Reports on chiral squaraine dyes are, however, scarce. To address this gap, we here report two novel chiral squaraine dyes and their achiral counterparts. The presented dyes are aggregated in solution and in thin films. A detailed chiroptical study shows that thin films formed by co-assembling the chiral dye with its achiral counterpart exhibit exceptional photophysical properties. The circular dichroism (CD) of the co-assembled structures reaches a maximum when just 25 % of the chiral dye are present in the mixture. The solid structures with the highest relative CD effect are achieved when the chiral dye is used solely as a director, rather than the structural component. The chiroptical data are further supported by selected spin-filtering measurements using mc-AFM. These findings provide a promising platform for investigating the relationship between the dissymmetry of a supramolecular structure and emerging material properties rather than a comparison between a chiral molecular structure and an achiral counterpart., (© 2020 The Authors. Control over main-chain motion of chiral π-conjugated polymers can lead to unexpected new functionalities. Here, it is shown that by combining photoswitchable azobenzene units in conjugation with chiral fluorene comonomers and appropriate plasticizers, the polymer organization and chiroptical properties of these alternating copolymers steered by light and its state of polarization can be dynamically controlled. The configuration of the stereogenic centers in the side chains of the fluorene units determines the handedness of the cholesteric organization in thermally annealed films, indicating cooperative behavior. The polymer alignment and helicity of the supramolecular arrangement can be switched by irradiating with linearly and circularly polarized light, respectively. Intriguingly, when switching the handedness of thermally induced cholesteric organizations by illuminating with circularly polarized light that is opposite to the handedness of the cholesteric phases, a nematic-like intermediate state is observed during helix interconversion. By the sequence of irradiation with left and right circularly polarized light followed by thermal annealing, an asymmetric motion, reminiscent of that seen in molecular motors is observed. Materials based on the laminar ordering of self-assembled molecules have a unique potential for applications requiring efficient energy migration through densely packed chromophores. Here, employing molecular assemblies of coil-rod-coil block molecules for triplet-triplet annihilation upconversion (TTA-UC) based on triplet energy migration with linearly polarized emission is reported. By covalently attaching discrete-length oligodimethylsiloxane (oDMS) to 9,10-diphenylanthracene (DPA), highly ordered 2D crystalline DPA sheets separated by oDMS layers are obtained. Transparent films of this material doped with small amounts of triplet sensitizer Pt II octaethylporphyrin show air-stable TTA-UC under non-coherent excitation. Upon annealing, an increase in TTA-UC up to two orders of magnitude is observed originating from both an improved molecular ordering of DPA and an increased dispersion of the sensitizer. The molecular alignment in millimeter-sized domains leads to upconverted linearly polarized emission without alignment layers. By using a novel technique, upconversion imaging microscopy, the TTA-UC intensity is spatially resolved on a micrometer scale to visually demonstrate the importance of molecular dispersion of sensitizer molecules for efficient TTA-UC. By enchaining a small fraction of chiral monomer units, the helical sense of a dynamic polymer constructed from achiral monomer units can be disproportionately biased. This phenomenon, known as the sergeants-and-soldiers (S&S) effect, has been found to be widely applicable to dynamic covalent and supramolecular polymers. However, it has not been exemplified with a supramolecular polymer that features multiple helical states. Herein, we demonstrate the S&S effect in the context of the temperature-controlled supramolecular copolymerization of chiral and achiral biphenyl tetracarboxamides in alkanes. The one-dimensional helical structures presented in this study are unique because they exhibit three distinct helical states, two of which are triggered by coassembling with monomeric water that is codissolved in the solvent. The self-assembly pathways are rationalized using a combination of mathematical fitting and simulations with a thermodynamic mass-balance model. We observe an unprecedented case of an "abnormal" S&S effect by changing the side chains of the achiral soldier. Although the molecular structure of these aggregates remains elusive, the coassembly of water is found to have a profound impact on the helical excess.

Interactions between solvents and solutes are a cornerstone of physical organic chemistry and have been the subject of investigations over the last century. In recent years, a renewed interest in fundamental aspects of solute-solvent interactions has been sparked in the field of supramolecular chemistry in general and that of supramolecular polymers in particular. Although solvent effects in supramolecular chemistry have been recognized for a long time, the unique opportunities that supramolecular polymers offer to gain insight into solute-solvent interactions have become clear relatively recently. The multiple interactions that hold the supramolecular polymeric structure together are similar in strength to those between solute and solvent. The cooperativity found in ordered supramolecular polymers leads to the possibility of amplifying these solute-solvent effects and will shed light on extremely subtle solvation phenomena. As a result, many exciting effects of solute-solvent interactions in modern physical organic chemistry can be studied using supramolecular polymers. Our aim is to put the recent progress into a historical context and provide avenues toward a more comprehensive understanding of solvents in multicomponent supramolecular systems.

Supramolecular block copolymers composed of discrete blocks have promising properties for nanotechnology resulting from their ability to combine well-defined morphologies with good bulk material properties. Here, we present the impact of a well-defined siloxane block in either the main-chain or present as pendant grafts on the properties of supramolecular block copolymers that form ordered nanostructures with sub-5 nm domains. For this, two types of supramolecular block copolymers were synthesized based on the ureidopyrimidinone-urethane (UPy-UT) motif. In the first, oligodimethylsiloxanes ( o DMS) of discrete length were end-capped with the UPy-UT motif, affording main-chain UPy-UT-Si n . In the second, the UPy-UT motif was grafted with discrete o DMS affording grafted UPy-UT- g -Si 7 . For the two systems, the compositions are similar; only the molecular architecture differs. In both cases, crystallization of the UPy-UT block is in synergy with phase segregation of the o DMS, resulting in the formation of lamellar morphologies. The grafted UPy-UT- g -Si 7 can form long-range ordered lamellae, resulting in the formation of micrometer-sized 2D sheets of supramolecular polymers which show brittle properties. In contrast, UPy-UT-Si n forms a ductile material. As the compositions of both BCOs are similar, the differences in morphology and mechanical properties are a direct consequence of the molecular architecture. We report two families of naphthalenediimides (NDIs) symmetrically functionalized with discrete carbon chains comprising up to 55 carbon atoms ( C n -NDI-C n , n = 39, 44, 50, and 55) and their self-assembly at the 1-phenyloctane/highly oriented pyrolytic graphite interface (1-PO/HOPG interface). The compounds differ by the presence or absence of two or three internal double bonds in the carbon chains (unsaturated and saturated C n -NDI-C n , respectively). Combinatorial distributions of geometrical isomers displaying either the E - or Z -configuration at each double bond are obtained for the unsaturated compounds. Analysis of the self-assembled monolayers of equally long unsaturated and saturated C n -NDI-C n by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) reveal that all C n -NDI-C n tend to form lamellar systems featuring alternating areas of aromatic cores and carbon chains. Extended chain lengths are found to significantly increase disorder in the self-assembled monolayers due to misalignments and enhanced strength of interchain interactions. This phenomenon is antagonized by the local order-inducing effect of the internal double bonds: unsaturated C n -NDI-C n give qualitatively more ordered self-assembled monolayers compared to their saturated counterparts. The use of combinatorial distributions of unsaturated C n -NDI-C n geometrical isomers does not represent a limitation to achieve local order in the self-assembled monolayers. The self-assembly process operates a combinatorial search and selects the geometrical isomer(s) affording the most thermodynamically stable pattern, highlighting the adaptive character of the system. Finally, the antagonistic interplay between the extended carbon chain lengths and the presence of internal double bonds brings to the discovery of the lamellar "phase C" morphology for unsaturated C n -NDI-C n with n ≥ 50.

Supramolecular fibers in water, micrometers long and several nanometers in width, are among the most studied nanostructures for biomedical applications. These supramolecular polymers are formed through a spontaneous self-assembly process of small amphiphilic molecules by specific secondary interactions. Although many compounds do not possess a stereocenter, recent studies suggest the (co)existence of helical structures, albeit in racemic form. Here, we disclose a series of supramolecular (co)polymers based on water-soluble benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxamides (BTAs) that form double helices, fibers that were long thought to be chains of single molecules stacked in one dimension (1D). Detailed cryogenic transmission electron microscopy (cryo-TEM) studies and subsequent three-dimensional-volume reconstructions unveiled helical repeats, ranging from 15 to 30 nm. Most remarkable, the pitch can be tuned through the composition of the copolymers, where two different monomers with the same core but different peripheries are mixed in various ratios. Like in lipid bilayers, the hydrophobic shielding in the aggregates of these disc-shaped molecules is proposed to be best obtained by dimer formation, promoting supramolecular double helices. It is anticipated that many of the supramolecular polymers in water will have a thermodynamic stable structure, such as a double helix, although small structural changes can yield single stacks as well. Hence, it is essential to perform detailed analyses prior to sketching a molecular picture of these 1D fibers.

The fast dynamics occurring in natural processes increases the difficulty of creating biomaterials capable of mimicking Nature. Within synthetic biomaterials, water-soluble supramolecular polymers show great potential in mimicking the dynamic behavior of these natural processes. In particular, benzene-1,3,5-tricaboxamide (BTA)-based supramolecular polymers have shown to be highly dynamic through the exchange of monomers within and between fibers, but their suitability as biomaterials has not been yet explored. Herein we systematically study the interactions of BTA supramolecular polymers bearing either tetraethylene glycol or mannose units at the periphery with different biological entities. When BTA fibers were incubated with bovine serum albumin (BSA), the protein conformation was only affected by the fibers containing tetraethylene glycol at the periphery (BTA-OEG 4 ). Coarse-grained molecular simulations showed that BSA interacted with BTA-OEG 4 fibers rather than with BTA-OEG 4 monomers that are present in solution or that may exchange out of the fibers. Microscopy studies revealed that, in the presence of BSA, BTA-OEG 4 retained their fiber conformation although their length was slightly shortened. When further incubated with fetal bovine serum (FBS), both long and short fibers were visualized in solution. Nevertheless, in the hydrogel state, the rheological properties were remarkably preserved. Further studies on the cellular compatibility of all the BTA assemblies and mixtures thereof were performed in four different cell lines. A low cytotoxic effect at most concentrations was observed, confirming the suitability of utilizing functional BTA supramolecular polymers as dynamic biomaterials.

The field of supramolecular polymers is rapidly expanding; however, the exploitation of these systems as functional materials is still elusive. To become competitive, supramolecular polymers must display microstructural order and the emergence of new properties upon copolymerization. To tackle this, a greater understanding of the relationship between monomers' design and polymer microstructure is required as well as a set of functional monomers that efficiently interact with one another to synergistically generate new properties upon copolymerization. Here, we present the first implementation of frustrated Lewis pairs into supramolecular copolymers. Two supramolecular copolymers based on π-conjugated O -bridged triphenylborane and two different triphenylamines display the formation of B-N pairs within the supramolecular chain. The remarkably long lifetime and the circularly polarized nature of the resulting photoluminescence emission highlight the possibility to obtain an intermolecular B-N charge transfer. These results are proposed to be the consequences of the enchainment of B-N frustrated Lewis pairs within 1D supramolecular aggregates. Although it is challenging to obtain a precise molecular picture of the copolymer microstructure, the formation of random blocklike copolymers could be deduced from a combination of optical spectroscopic techniques and theoretical simulation.

Understanding cell/material interactions is essential to design functional cell-responsive materials. While the scientific literature abounds with formulations of biomimetic materials, only a fraction of them focused on mechanisms of the molecular interactions between cells and material. To provide new knowledge on the strategies for materials/cell recognition and binding, supramolecular benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxamide copolymers bearing benzoxaborole moieties are anchored on the surface of human erythrocytes via benzoxaborole/sialic-acid binding. This interaction based on both dynamic covalent and non-covalent chemistries is visualized in real time by means of total internal reflection fluorescence microscopy. Exploiting this imaging method, we observe that the functional copolymers specifically interact with the cell surface. An optimal fiber affinity towards the cells as a function of benzoxaborole concentration demonstrates the crucial role of multivalency in these cell/material interactions., (© 2020 The Authors. Supramolecular polymers are known to form strong and resilient hydrogels which can take up large amounts of water while exhibiting ease of processing and self-healing. They also possess similarities with networks of biological macromolecules. The combination of these features makes supramolecular polymers ideal candidates for studying mechanisms and consequences of self-assembly, which are relevant to biological materials. At the same time, this renders investigations of mixed hydrogels based on different supramolecular compounds necessary, since this substantially widens their applicability. Here, we address unusual viscoelastic properties of a class of binary hydrogels made by mixing fibrillar supramolecular polymers that are formed from two compounds: 1,3,5-benzene-tricarboxamide decorated with aliphatic chains terminated by tetra(ethylene glycol) (BTA) and a 20 kg/mol telechelic poly(ethylene glycol) decorated with the same hydrogen bonding BTA motif on both ends (BTA-PEG-BTA). Using a suite of experimental and simulation techniques, we find that the respective single-compound-based supramolecular systems form very different networks which exhibit drastically different rheology. More strikingly, mixing the compounds results in a non-monotonic dependence of modulus and viscosity on composition, suggesting a competition between interactions of the two compounds, which can then be used to fine-tune the mechanical properties. Simulations offer insight into the nature of this competition and their remarkable qualitative agreement with the experimental results is promising for the design of mixed hydrogels with desired and tunable properties. Photoredox catalysis has recently emerged as a powerful synthesis tool in organic and polymer chemistry. In contrast to the great achievements realized in organic solvents, performing photocatalytic processes efficiently in aqueous media encounters several challenges. Here, it is presented how amphiphilic single-chain polymeric nanoparticles (SCPNs) can be utilized as small reactors to conduct light-driven chemical reactions in water. By incorporating a phenothiazine (PTH) catalyst into the polymeric scaffold, metal-free reduction and C-C cross-coupling reactions can be carried out upon exposure to UV light under ambient conditions. The versatility of this approach is underlined by a large substrate scope, tolerance towards oxygen, and excellent recyclability. Connecting molecular-level phenomena to larger scales and, ultimately, to sophisticated molecular systems that resemble living systems remains a considerable challenge in supramolecular chemistry. To this end, molecular self-assembly at higher hierarchical levels has to be understood and controlled. Here, we report unusual self-assembled structures formed from a simple porphyrin derivative. Unexpectedly, this formed a one-dimensional (1D) supramolecular polymer that coiled to give an Archimedean spiral. Our analysis of the supramolecular polymerization by using mass-balance models suggested that the Archimedean spiral is formed at high concentrations of the monomer, whereas other aggregation types might form at low concentrations. Gratifyingly, we discovered that our porphyrin-based monomer formed supramolecular concentric toroids at low concentrations. Moreover, a mechanistic insight into the self-assembly process permitted a controlled synthesis of these concentric toroids. This study both illustrates the richness of self-assembled structures at higher levels of hierarchy and demonstrates a topological effect in noncovalent synthesis.

Water is typically considered to be insoluble in alkanes. Recently, however, monomerically dissolved water in alkanes has been shown to dramatically impact the structure of hydrogen-bonded supramolecular polymers. Here, we report that water in methylcyclohexane (MCH) also determines the outcome of combining a Michael reaction with a porphyrin-based supramolecular system. In dry conditions, the components of the reaction do not affect or destabilize the supramolecular polymer, whereas in ambient or wet conditions the polymers are rapidly destabilized. Although spectroscopic investigations show no effect of water on the molecular structure of the supramolecular polymer, light scattering and atomic force microscopy experiments show that water increases the flexibility of the supramolecular polymer and decreases the polymer length. Through a series of titrations, we show that a cooperative interaction, involving the coordination of the amine catalyst to the porphyrin and complexation of the substrates to the flexible polymers invokes the depolymerization of the aggregates. Water crucially stabilizes these cooperative interactions to cause complete depolymerization in humid conditions. Additionally, we show that the humidity-controlled interference in the polymer stability occurs with various substrates, indicating that water may play a ubiquitous role in supramolecular polymerizations in oils. By controlling the amount of water, the influence of a covalent chemical process on noncovalent aggregates can be mediated, which holds great potential to forge a connection between chemical reactivity and supramolecular material structure. Moreover, our findings highlight that understanding cooperative interactions in multicomponent noncovalent systems is crucial to design complex molecular systems.

Efficient long-range energy transport along supramolecular architectures of functional organic molecules is a key step in nature for converting sunlight into a useful form of energy. Understanding and manipulating these transport processes on a molecular and supramolecular scale is a long-standing goal. However, the realization of a well-defined system that allows for tuning morphology and electronic properties as well as for resolution of transport in space and time is challenging. Here we show how the excited-state energy landscape and thus the coherence characteristics of electronic excitations can be modified by the hierarchical level of H-type supramolecular architectures. We visualize, at room temperature, long-range incoherent transport of delocalized singlet excitons on pico- to nanosecond time scales in single supramolecular nanofibers and bundles of nanofibers. Increasing the degree of coherence, i.e., exciton delocalization, via supramolecular architectures enhances exciton diffusivities up to 1 order of magnitude. In particular, we find that single supramolecular nanofibers exhibit the highest diffusivities reported for H-aggregates so far.
