Mobile device authentication has been a highly active research topic for over 10 years, with a vast range of methods having been proposed and analyzed. In related areas such as secure channel protocols, remote authentication, or desktop user authentication, strong, systematic, and increasingly formal threat models have already been established and are used to qualitatively and quantitatively compare different methods. Unfortunately, the analysis of mobile device authentication is often based on weak adversary models, suggesting overly optimistic results on their respective security. In this article, we first introduce a new classification of adversaries to better analyze and compare mobile device authentication methods. We then apply this classification to a systematic literature survey. The survey shows that security is still an afterthought and that most proposed protocols lack a comprehensive security analysis. Superlattice (SL) thin films composed of refractory ceramics unite extremely high hardness and enhanced fracture toughness; a material combination often being mutually exclusive. While the hardness enhancement obtained whentwo materials form a superlattice is well described by existing models based on dislocation mobility, the underlying mechanisms behind the increase in fracture toughness are yet to be unraveled. Here we provide a model based on linear elasticity theory to predict the fracture toughness enhancement in (semi-)epitaxial nanolayers due to coherency stresses and formation of misfit dislocations. We exemplarily study a superlattice structure composed of two cubic transition metal nitrides (TiN, CrN) on a MgO (100) single-crystal substrate. Minimization of the overall strain energy, each time a new layer is added on the nanolayered stack, allows estimating the density of misfit dislocations formed at the interfaces. The evolving coherency stresses, which are partly relaxed by the misfit dislocations, are then used to calculate the apparent fracture toughness of respective SL architectures by applying the weight function method. The results show that the critical stress intensity increases steeply with increasing bilayer period for very thin (essentially dislocation-free) SLs, before the K_IC values decline more gently along with the formation of misfit dislocations. The characteristic K_IC vs. bilayer-period-dependence nicely matches experimental trends. Importantly, all critical stress intensity values of the superlattice films clearly exceed the intrinsic fracture toughness of the constituting layer materials, evincing the importance of coherency stresses for increasing the crack growth resistance.

The symmetry of local moments plays a defining role in the nature of exotic grounds states stabilized in frustrated magnetic materials. We present inelastic neutron scattering (INS) measurements of the crystal electric field (CEF) excitations in the family of compounds MgRE$_2$Se$_4$ (RE $\in$ $\{$Ho, Tm, Er and Yb$\}$). These compounds form in the spinel structure, with the rare earth ions comprising a highly frustrated pyrochlore sublattice. Within the symmetry constraints of this lattice, we fit both the energies and intensities of observed modes in the INS spectra to determine the most likely CEF Hamiltonian for each material and comment on the ground state wavefunctions in the local electron picture. In this way, we experimentally confirm MgTm$_2$Se$_4$ has a non-magnetic ground state, and MgYb$_2$Se$_4$ has effective $S=\frac{1}{2}$ spins with $g_\parallel = 5.188(79)$ and $g_\perp = 0.923(85)~\mu_B$. The spectrum of MgHo$_2$Se$_4$ indicates a ground state doublet containing Ising spins with $g_\parallel = 2.72(46)$, though low-lying CEF levels are also seen at thermally accessible energies $\delta_E = 0.591(36)$, 0.945(30) and 2.88(7)~meV, which can complicate interpretation. These results are used to comment on measured magnetization data of all compounds, and are compared to published results on the material MgEr$_2$Se$_4$., Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures

Superlattice architecture represents an effective strategy to improve performance of hard protective coatings. Our model system, MoN/TaN, combines materials well-known for their high ductility as well as a strong driving force for vacancies. In this work, we reveal and interpret peculiar structure-stability-elasticity relations for MoN/TaN combining modelling and experimental approaches. Chemistry of the most stable structural variants depending on various deposition conditions is predicted by Density Functional Theory calculations using the concept of chemical potential. Importantly, no stability region exists for the defect-free superlattice. The X-ray Diffraction and Energy-dispersive $\text{X-ray}$ Spectroscopy experiments show that MoN/TaN superlattices consist of distorted fcc building blocks and contain non-metallic vacancies in MoN layers, which perfectly agrees with our theoretical model for these particular deposition conditions. The vibrational spectra analysis together with the close overlap between the experimental indentation modulus and the calculated Young's modulus points towards MoN$_{0.5}$/TaN as the most likely chemistry of our coatings.

Android is the most widely deployed end-user focused operating system. With its growing set of use cases encompassing communication, navigation, media consumption, entertainment, finance, health, and access to sensors, actuators, cameras, or microphones, its underlying security model needs to address a host of practical threats in a wide variety of scenarios while being useful to non-security experts. To support this flexibility, Android's security model must strike a difficult balance between security, privacy, and usability for end users; provide assurances for app developers; and maintain system performance under tight hardware constraints. This paper aims to both document the assumed threat model and discuss its implications, with a focus on the ecosystem context in which Android exists. We analyze how different security measures in past and current Android implementations work together to mitigate these threats, and, where there are special cases in applying the security model in practice; we discuss these deliberate deviations and examine their impact.

We report a straightforward chemical methodology for controlling the thickness of black phosphorus flakes down to the monolayer limit by layer-by-layer oxidation and thinning, using water as solubilizing agent. Moreover, the oxidation process can be stopped at will by two different passivation procedures, namely the non-covalent functionalization with perylene diimide chromophores, which prevents the photooxidation, or by using a protective ionic liquid layer. The obtained flakes preserve their electronic properties as demonstrated by fabricating a BP field-effect transistor (FET). We initiate the systematic investigation of non-flat resolutions of non-minimal singularities in elliptically fibered Calabi--Yau threefolds. Compactification of M-theory on these geometries provides an alternative approach to studying phases of five-dimensional superconformal field theories (5d SCFTs). We argue that such resolutions capture non-trivial holonomies in the circle reduction of the 6d conformal matter theory that is the F-theory interpretation of the singular fibration. As these holonomies become mass deformations in the 5d theory, non-flat resolutions furnish a novel method in the attempt to classify 5d SCFTs through 6d SCFTs on a circle. A particularly pleasant aspect of this proposal is the explicit embedding of the 5d SCFT's enhanced flavor group inside that of the parent 6d SCFT, which can be read off from the geometry. Wearable electronics and smart textiles are growing fields in the cause to integrate modern communication and computing tools into clothing instead of carrying around smart phones and tablets. Naturally, this also requires power sources to be integrated in textiles. In this paper, a proof-of-concept is presented in form of a photovoltaic cell based on a commercially available viscose fiber. This has been realized using a silver nanowire network around the viscose fiber to establish electrical contact and a photoactive coating using the standard workhorse among organic thin film solar cells, a blend of poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) and phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM). Structure and performance of single fiber devices demonstrate their feasibility and functionality. The applied materials and methods are compatible to solution processing therewith qualifying for potential roll-to-roll large-scale production.

Non-flat fibrations often appear in F-theory GUT models, and their interpretation is still somewhat mysterious. In this note we explore this issue in a model of particular phenomenological interest, the global $SU(5)\times U(1)$ Peccei-Quinn F-theory model. We present evidence that co-dimension three non-flat fibres give rise to higher order couplings in the effective four-dimensional superpotential. High-entropy materials often outperform their lower-entropy relatives in various aspects, such as thermal stability and fracture toughness. While there are extensive research activities in the field of high-entropy alloys, comparably little is performed for high-entropy ceramics, and especially for high-entropy diborides. Here we show, that not only the hardness of ZrB2 layers can be improved from 43.2 to 45.8 to 47.2 GPa through the formation of solid solution ternary diborides (Zr0.61Ti0.39B2) and high-entropy diborides (Zr0.23Ti0.20Hf0.19V0.14Ta0.24B2), respectively, but especially their thermal stability against structural rearrangements and decomposition towards the constituting binary diborides., Comment: Viewpoint article

We argue that in type IIB LVS string models, after including the leading order moduli stabilisation effects, the moduli space for the remaining flat directions is compact due the Calabi-Yau K\"ahler cone conditions. In cosmological applications, this gives an inflaton field range which is bounded from above, in analogy with recent results from the weak gravity and swampland conjectures. We support our claim by explicitly showing that it holds for all LVS vacua with $h^{1,1} = 3$ obtained from 4-dimensional reflexive polytopes. In particular, we first search for all Calabi-Yau threefolds from the Kreuzer-Skarke list with $h^{1,1}=2$, $3$ and $4$ which allow for LVS vacua, finding several new LVS geometries which were so far unknown. We then focus on the $h^{1,1} = 3$ cases and show that the K\"ahler cones of all toric hypersurface threefolds force the effective 1-dimensional LVS moduli space to be compact. We study ${\mathcal N}=(1,0)$ six-dimensional theories living on defects of non-geometric backgrounds of the $E_8\times E_8$ and the $\text{Spin}(32)/{\mathbb Z}_2$ heterotic strings. Such configurations can be analyzed by dualizing to F-theory on elliptic K3-fibered non-compact Calabi-Yau threefolds. The majority of the resulting dual threefolds turn out to contain singularities which do not admit a crepant resolution. When the singularities can be resolved crepantly, the theories living on the defect are explicitly determined and reveal a form of duality in which distinct defects are described by the same IR fixed point. Context: In C, low-level errors, such as buffer overflow and use-after-free, are a major problem, as they cause security vulnerabilities and hard-to-find bugs. C lacks automatic checks, and programmers cannot apply defensive programming techniques because objects (e.g., arrays or structs) lack run-time information about bounds, lifetime, and types. Inquiry: Current approaches to tackling low-level errors include dynamic tools, such as bounds or type checkers, that check for certain actions during program execution. If they detect an error, they typically abort execution. Although they track run-time information as part of their runtimes, they do not expose this information to programmers. Approach: We devised an introspection interface that allows C programmers to access run-time information and to query object bounds, object lifetimes, object types, and information about variadic arguments. This enables library writers to check for invalid input or program states and thus, for example, to implement custom error handling that maintains system availability and does not terminate on benign errors. As we assume that introspection is used together with a dynamic tool that implements automatic checks, errors that are not handled in the application logic continue to cause the dynamic tool to abort execution. Knowledge: Using the introspection interface, we implemented a more robust, source-compatible version of the C standard library that validates parameters to its functions. The library functions react to otherwise undefined behavior; for example, they can detect lurking flaws, handle unterminated strings, check format string arguments, and set errno when they detect benign usage errors. Grounding: Existing dynamic tools maintain run-time information that can be used to implement the introspection interface, and we demonstrate its implementation in Safe Sulong, an interpreter and dynamic bug-finding tool for C that runs on a Java Virtual Machine and can thus easily expose relevant run-time information. Importance: Using introspection in user code is a novel approach to tackling the long-standing problem of low-level errors in C. As new approaches are lowering the performance overhead of run-time information maintenance, the usage of dynamic runtimes for C could become more common, which could ultimately facilitate a more widespread implementation of such an introspection interface.

We show that quantum confinement in the valence and conduction bands of semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes can be engineered by means of artificial defects. This ability holds potential for designing future nanotube-based quantum devices such as electrically driven room-temperature single-photon sources emitting at telecom-wavelength. Using Ar$^{+}$ and N$^{+}$ ion-induced defects, intrananotube quantum dots with sub-10 nm lateral sizes are created, giving rise to quantized electronic bound states with level spacings of the order of 100 meV and larger. Using low-temperature scanning tunneling spectroscopy, we resolve the energy and real space properties of the quantized states and compare them with theoretical model calculations. By solving the Schr\"odinger equation over a one-dimensional piecewise constant potential model, the effects of inhomogeneous defect scattering strength as well as surface variations in the Au(111) substrate on the quantized states structure are remarkably well reproduced. Furthermore, using ab-initio calculations, we demonstrate that defect structures such as vacancies, di-vacancies and chemisorbed nitrogen ad-atoms constitute strong scattering centers able to form quantum dots with clear signatures of discrete bound states as observed experimentally. We study a class of 6d $\mathcal{N}=(1,0)$ non-geometric vacua of the $\text{Spin}(32)/\mathbb Z_2$ heterotic string which can be understood as fibrations of genus-two curves over a complex one-dimensional base. The 6d $\mathcal{N}=(1,0)$ theories living on the defects that arise when the genus-two fiber degenerates at a point of the base are analyzed by dualizing to F-theory on elliptic K3-fibered non-compact Calabi-Yau threefolds. We consider all possible degenerations of genus-two curves and systematically attempt to resolve the singularities of the dual threefolds. As in the analogous non-geometric vacua of the $E_8\times E_8$ heterotic string, we find that many of the resulting dual threefolds contain singularities which do not admit a crepant resolution. When the singularities can be resolved crepantly, we determine the emerging effective theories which turn out to be little string theories at a generic point on their tensor branch. Quantum mechanical calculations had been previously applied to predict phase stability in many ternary and multinary nitride systems. While the predictions were very accurate for the Ti-Al-N system, some discrepancies between theory and experiment were obtained in the case of other systems. Namely, in the case of Ta-Al-N, the calculations tend to overestimate the minimum Al content necessary to obtain a metastable solid solution with a cubic structure. In this work, we present a comprehensive study of the impact of vacancies on the phase fields in quasi-binary TaN-AlN and NbN-AlN systems. Our calculations clearly show that presence of point defects strongly enlarges the cubic phase field in the TaN-AlN system, while the effect is less pronounced in the NbN-AlN case. The present phase stability predictions agree better with experimental observations of physical vapour deposited thin films reported in the literature than that based on perfect, non-defected structures. We introduce a set of identities in the cohomology ring of elliptic fibrations which are equivalent to the cancellation of gauge and mixed gauge-gravitational anomalies in F-theory compactifications to four and six dimensions. The identities consist in (co)homological relations between complex codimension-two cycles. The same set of relations, once evaluated on elliptic Calabi-Yau three-folds and four-folds, is shown to universally govern the structure of anomalies and their Green-Schwarz cancellation in six- and four-dimensional F-theory vacua, respectively. We furthermore conjecture that these relations hold not only within the cohomology ring, but even at the level of the Chow ring, i.e. as relations among codimension-two cycles modulo rational equivalence. We verify this conjecture in non-trivial examples with Abelian and non-Abelian gauge groups factors. Apart from governing the structure of local anomalies, the identities in the Chow ring relate different types of gauge backgrounds on elliptically fibred Calabi-Yau four-folds., Comment: 45 pages

We describe global embeddings of fractional D3 branes at orientifolded singularities in type IIB flux compactifications. We present an explicit Calabi-Yau example where the chiral visible sector lives on a local orientifolded quiver while non-perturbative effects, $\alpha'$ corrections and a T-brane hidden sector lead to full closed string moduli stabilisation in a de Sitter vacuum. The same model can also successfully give rise to inflation driven by a del Pezzo divisor. Computing the exact spectrum of charged massless matter is a crucial step towards understanding the effective field theory describing F-theory vacua in four dimensions. In this work we further develop a coherent framework to determine the charged massless matter in F-theory compactified on elliptic fourfolds, and demonstrate its application in a concrete example. The gauge background is represented, via duality with M-theory, by algebraic cycles modulo rational equivalence. Intersection theory within the Chow ring allows us to extract coherent sheaves on the base of the elliptic fibration whose cohomology groups encode the charged zero-mode spectrum. The dimensions of these cohomology groups are computed with the help of modern techniques from algebraic geometry, which we implement in the software gap. We exemplify this approach in models with an Abelian and non-Abelian gauge group and observe jumps in the exact massless spectrum as the complex structure moduli are varied. Employing ab initio calculations, we discuss chemical, mechanical, and dynamical stability of MoN-TaN solid solutions together with cubic-like MoN/TaN superlattices, as another materials design concept. Hexagonal-type structures based on low-energy modifications of MoN and TaN are the most stable ones over the whole composition range. Despite being metastable, disordered cubic polymorphs are energetically significantly preferred over their ordered counterparts. An in-depth analysis of atomic environments in terms of bond lengths and angles reveals that the chemical disorder results in (partially) broken symmetry, i.e., the disordered cubic structure relaxes towards a hexagonal NiAs-type phase, the ground state of MoN. Surprisingly, also the superlattice architecture is clearly favored over the ordered cubic solid solution. We show that the bi-axial coherency stresses in superlattices break the cubic symmetry beyond simple tetragonal distortions and lead to a new tetragonal $\zeta$-phase (space group P4/nmm), which exhibits a more negative formation energy than the symmetry-stabilized cubic structures of MoN and TaN. Unlike cubic TaN, the $\zeta\text{-TaN}$ is elastically and vibrationally stable, while $\zeta$-MoN is stabilized only by the superlattice structure. To map compositional trends in elasticity, we establish mechanical stability of various Mo$_{1-x}$Ta$_x$N systems and find the closest high-symmetry approximants of the corresponding elastic tensors. According to the estimated polycrystalline moduli, the hexagonal polymorphs are predicted to be extremely hard, however, less ductile than the cubic phases and superlattices. The trends in stability based on energetics and elasticity are corroborated by density of electronic states.

We study the effect of quantum corrections on heterotic compactifications on elliptic fibrations away from the stable degeneration limit, elaborating on a recent observation by Malmendier and Morrison. We show that already for the simplest non-trivial elliptic fibration the effect is quite dramatic: the $I_1$ degeneration with trivial gauge background dynamically splits into two T-fects with monodromy around each T-fect being (conjugate to) T-duality along one of the legs of the $T^2$. This implies that almost every elliptic heterotic compactification becomes a non-geometric T-fold away from the stable degeneration limit. We also point out a subtlety due to this non-geometric splitting at finite fiber size. It arises when determining, via heterotic/F-theory duality, the SCFTs associated to a small number of pointlike instantons probing heterotic ADE singularities. We employ \textit{ab initio} calculations to investigate energetics of point defects in metastable rocksalt cubic Ta-N and Mo-N. Our results reveal a strong tendency to off-stoichiometry, i.e. defected structures are predicted to be more stable than perfect ones with 1:1 metal-to-nitrogen stoichiometry, in agreement with previous literature reports. While Ta-N significantly favours metal vacancies, Mo-N exhibits similar energies of formation regardless of the vacancy type ($V_\text{Mo}$, $V_\text{N}$) as long as their concentration is below $\approx15\,\text{at.\%}$. The overall lowest energy of formation were obtained for $\text{Ta}_{0.78}\text{N}$ and $\text{Mo}_{0.91}\text{N}$, which are hence predicted to be the most stable compositions. To account for various experimental condition during synthesis, we further evaluated the phase stability as a function of chemical potential of individual species. The proposed phase diagrams reveal four stable compositions, $\text{Mo}_{0.84}\text{N}$, $\text{Mo}_{0.91}\text{N}$, $\text{MoN}_{0.69}$ and $\text{MoN}_{0.44}$, in the case of Mo-N and nine stable compositions in the case of Ta-N indicating the crucial role of metal under-stoichiometry, since $\text{Ta}_{0.75}\text{N}$ and $\text{Ta}_{0.78}\text{N}$ significantly dominate the diagram. These results are important for understanding and designing experiments using non-equilibrium deposition techniques.
