We report on the short and long term X-ray properties of the bright nearby Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 2992, which was extensively observed with Swift, XMM-Newton and NuSTAR. Swift targeted the source more than 100 times between 2019 and 2021 in the context of two monitoring campaigns. Both time-averaged and time-resolved analyses are performed, and we find that the short-to-long term spectral properties of NGC 2992 are dominated by a highly variable nuclear continuum. The source varied in the 2-10 keV energy band from 0.6 to 12 $\times$ 10$^{-11}$ erg cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ during the two year long Swift monitoring. The fastest 2-10 keV flux change (by a factor of $\sim60\%$) occurred on a timescale of a few hours. The overall emission spectrum of the source is consistent with a power law-like continuum ($\Gamma=1.69\pm0.01$) absorbed by a constant line-of-sight column density N$_{H}=(7.8\pm0.1)\times$ 10$^{21}$ $\rm cm^{-2}$. The reflected emission is likely due to matter with an average column density N$_{\rm H}=(9.6\pm2.7)\times$ 10$^{22}$ $\rm cm^{-2}$, thus NGC 2992 appears to have a globally Compton-thin circumnuclear medium. X-ray polarimetry can potentially constrain the unknown geometrical shape of AGN coronae. We present simulations of the X-ray polarization signal expected from AGN coronae, assuming three different geometries, namely slab, spherical and conical. We use the fully relativistic Monte-Carlo Comptonization code monk to compute the X-ray polarization degree and angle. We explore different coronal parameters such as shape, size, location and optical depth. Different coronal geometries give a significantly different X-ray polarization signal. A slab corona yields a high polarization degree, up to 14% depending on the viewing inclination; a spherical corona yields low values, about 1-3%, while a conical corona yields intermediate values. We also find a difference of 90 degrees in polarization angle between the slab corona and the spherical or conical coronae. Upcoming X-ray polarimetry missions like IXPE will allow us to observationally distinguish among different coronal geometries in AGNs for the first time., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 14 pages, 11 figures

Due to be launched in late 2021, the Imaging X-Ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE) is a NASA Small Explorer mission designed to perform polarization measurements in the 2-8 keV band, complemented with imaging, spectroscopy and timing capabilities. At the heart of the focal plane is a set of three polarization-sensitive Gas Pixel Detectors (GPD), each based on a custom ASIC acting as a charge-collecting anode. In this paper we shall review the design, manufacturing, and test of the IXPE focal-plane detectors, with particular emphasis on the connection between the science drivers, the performance metrics and the operational aspects. We shall present a thorough characterization of the GPDs in terms of effective noise, trigger efficiency, dead time, uniformity of response, and spectral and polarimetric performance. In addition, we shall discuss in detail a number of instrumental effects that are relevant for high-level science analysis -- particularly as far as the response to unpolarized radiation and the stability in time are concerned., Comment: To be published in Astroparticle Physics

From Swift monitoring of a sample of active galactic nuclei (AGN) we found a transient X-ray obscuration event in Seyfert-1 galaxy NGC 3227, and thus triggered our joint XMM-Newton, NuSTAR, and Hubble Space Telescope (HST) observations to study this event. Here in the first paper of our series we present the broadband continuum modelling of the spectral energy distribution (SED) for NGC 3227, extending from near infrared (NIR) to hard X-rays. We use our new spectra taken with XMM-Newton, NuSTAR, and HST/COS in 2019, together with archival unobscured XMM-Newton, NuSTAR, and HST/STIS data, in order to disentangle various spectral components of NGC 3227 and recover the underlying continuum. We find the observed NIR-optical-UV continuum is explained well by an accretion disk blackbody component (Tmax = 10 eV), which is internally reddened by E(B-V) = 0.45 with a Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) extinction law. We derive the inner radius (12 Rg) and the accretion rate (0.1 solar mass per year) of the disk by modelling the thermal disk emission. The internal reddening in NGC 3227 is most likely associated with outflows from the dusty AGN torus. In addition, an unreddened continuum component is also evident, which likely arises from scattered radiation, associated with the extended narrow-line region (NLR) of NGC 3227. The extreme ultraviolet (EUV) continuum, and the 'soft X-ray excess', can be explained with a 'warm Comptonisation' component. The hard X-rays are consistent with a power-law and a neutral reflection component. The intrinsic bolometric luminosity of the AGN in NGC 3227 is about 2.2e+43 erg/s in 2019, corresponding to 3% Eddington luminosity. Our continuum modelling of the new triggered data of NGC 3227 requires the presence of a new obscuring gas with column density NH = 5e+22 cm^-2, partially covering the X-ray source (Cf = 0.6)., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics (A&A), 11 pages, 7 figures

Broadband X-ray spectroscopy of the X-ray emission produced in the coronae of active galactic nuclei (AGN) can provide important insights into the physical conditions very close to their central supermassive black holes. The temperature of the Comptonizing plasma that forms the corona is manifested through a high-energy cutoff that has been difficult to directly constrain even in the brightest AGN because it requires high-quality data at energies above 10 keV. In this paper we present a large collection of coronal cutoff constraints for obscured AGN based on a sample of 130 AGN selected in the hard X-ray band with Swift/BAT and observed nearly simultaneously with NuSTAR and Swift/XRT. We find that under a reasonable set of assumptions regarding partial constraints the median cutoff is well constrained to 290$\pm$20 keV, where the uncertainty is statistical and given at the 68% confidence level. We investigate the sensitivity of this result to our assumptions and find that consideration of various known systematic uncertainties robustly places the median cutoff between 240 keV and 340 keV. The central 68% of the intrinsic cutoff distribution is found to be between about 140 keV and 500 keV, with estimated uncertainties of 20 keV and 100 keV, respectively. In comparison with the literature, we find no clear evidence that the cutoffs in obscured and unobscured AGN are substantially different. We report estimates of the X-ray coronal size of active galactic nuclei in the lamppost geometry. In this commonly adopted scenario, the corona is assumed for simplicity to be a point-like X-ray source located on the axis of the accretion disc. However, the corona must intercept a number of optical/UV seed photons from the disc consistent with the observed X-ray flux, which constrains its size. We employ a relativistic ray-tracing code, originally developed by Dov\v{c}iak & Done (2016), that calculates the size of a Comptonizing lamppost corona illuminated by a standard thin disc. We assume that the disc extends down to the innermost stable circular orbit of a non-spinning or a maximally spinning black hole. We apply this method to a sample of 20 Seyfert 1 galaxies, using simultaneous optical/UV and X-ray archival data from XMM-Newton. At least for the sources accreting below the Eddington limit, we find that a Comptonizing lamppost corona can generally exist, but with constraints on its size and height above the event horizon of the black hole depending on the spin. For a maximally spinning black hole, a solution can almost always be found at any height, while for a non-spinning black hole the height must generally be higher than 5 gravitational radii. This is because, for a given luminosity, a higher spin implies more seed photons illuminating the corona due to a larger and hotter inner disc area. One distinctive feature of low-luminosity active galactic nuclei (LLAGN) is the relatively weak reflection features they may display in the X-ray spectrum, which can result from the disappearance of the torus with decreasing accretion rates. Some material, however, must surround the active nucleus, i.e., the accretion flow itself and, possibly, a flattened-out or thinned torus. In this work, we study whether reflection is indeed absent or undetectable due to its intrinsically weak features together with the low statistics inherent to LLAGN. Here we focus on NGC 3718 ($L/L_{\rm Edd}\sim10^{-5}$) combining observations from XMM--Newton and the deepest to date NuSTAR (0.5--79 keV) spectrum of a LLAGN, to constrain potential reflectors, and analyze how the fitted coronal parameters depend on the reflection model. We test models representing both an accretion disc (Relxill) and a torus-like (MYTorus and Borus) neutral reflector. From a statistical point of view, reflection is not required, but its inclusion allows to place strong constraints on the geometry and physical features of the surroundings: both neutral reflectors (torus) tested should be Compton thin ($N_H<10^{23.2}$cm$^{-2}$) and preferentially cover a large fraction of the sky. If the reflected light instead arises from an ionized reflector, a highly ionized case is preferred. These models produce an intrinsic power-law spectral index in the range [1.81--1.87], where the torus models result in steeper slopes. The cut-off energy of the power-law emission also changes with the inclusion of reflection models, resulting in constrained values for the disc reflectors and unconstrained values for torus reflectors., Comment: 15 pages and 16 Figures

XMM-Newton and NuSTAR multiple exposures allow us to disentangle the different emission components of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and to study the evolution of their different spectral features. In this work, we present the timing and spectral properties of five simultaneous XMM-Newton and NuSTAR observations of the Narrow Line Seyfert 1 galaxy Mrk 359. We aim to provide the first broadband spectral modeling of Mrk 359 describing its emission spectrum from the UV up to the hard X-rays. To do this, we performed temporal and spectral data analysis, characterising the amplitude and spectral changes of the Mrk 359 time series and computing the 2-10 keV normalised excess variance. The spectral broadband modelling assumes the standard hot Comptonising corona and reflection component, while for the soft excess we tested two different models: a warm, optically thick Comptonising corona (the two-corona model) and a reflection model in which the soft-excess is the result of a blurred reflected continuum and line emission (the reflection model). High and low flux states were observed during the campaign. The former state has a softer spectral shape, while the latter shows a harder one. The photon index is in the 1.75-1.89 range, and only a lower limit to the hot-corona electron temperature can be found. A constant reflection component, likely associated with distant matter, is observed. Regarding the soft excess, we found that among the reflection models we tested, the one providing the better fit (reduced $\chi^2$=1.14) is the high-density one. However, a significantly better fit (reduced $\chi^2$=1.08) is found by modelling the soft excess with a warm Comptonisation model. The present analysis suggests the two-corona model as the best scenario for the optical-UV to X-ray emission spectrum of Mrk 359., Comment: 12 pages, 14 figures. Accepted for publication in A&A

We report on one of the brightest flux levels of the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 2992 ever observed in X-rays, on May 2019. The source has been monitored every few days from March 26, 2019 to December 14, 2019 by Swift-XRT, and simultaneous XMM-Newton (250 ks) and NuSTAR (120 ks) observations were triggered on May 6, 2019. The high count rate of the source (its 2-10 keV flux ranged between 0.7 and $1.0\times10^{-10}$ erg cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$) allows us to perform a time-resolved spectroscopy, probing spatial scales of tens of gravitational radii from the central black hole. By constructing a map of the excess emission over the primary continuum, we find several emission structures in the 5.0-7.2 keV energy band. From fitting the 50 EPIC pn spectral slices of $\sim$5 ks duration, we interpret them as a constant narrow iron K$\alpha$ line and three variable components in the iron K complex. When a self-consistent model accounting for the accretion disk emission is considered (KYNrline), two of these features (in the 5.0-5.8 keV and 6.8-7.2 keV bands) can be ascribed to a flaring region of the accretion disk located at ${r_{in}}\simeq15$-40 r$_{g\rm }$ from the black hole. The third one (6.5-6.8 keV) is likely produced at much larger radii ($r_{in}>50$ r$_{g\rm }$). The inner radius and the azimuthal extension retrieved from the coadded spectra of the flaring states are ${ r_{in}}=15\pm3$ r$_{g\rm }$ and $\phi=165^{\circ}-330^{\circ}$, suggesting that the emitting region responsible for the broad iron K component is a relatively compact annular sector within the disk. Our findings support a physical scenario in which the accretion disk in NGC 2992 becomes more active at high accretion rates ($L_{\rm bol}/L_{\rm Edd}\geq4\%$)., Comment: 12 pages, 12 figures, 1 table. We present the results of the latest NuSTAR monitoring campaign of the Compton-thick Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 1068, composed of four $\sim$50 ks observations performed between July 2017 and February 2018 to search for flux and spectral variability on timescales from 1 to 6 months. We detect one unveiling and one eclipsing event with timescales less than 27 and 91 days, respectively, ascribed to Compton-thick material with $N_H=(1.8\pm0.8)\times10^{24}$ cm$^{-2}$ and $N_H\geq(2.4\pm0.5)\times10^{24}$ cm$^{-2}$ moving across our line of sight. This gas is likely located in the innermost part of the torus or even further inward, thus providing further evidence of the clumpy structure of the circumnuclear matter in this source. Taking advantage of simultaneous Swift-XRT observations, we also detected a new flaring ULX, at a distance $d\sim$30" (i.e. $\sim$2 kpc) from the nuclear region of NGC 1068, with a peak X-ray intrinsic luminosity of $(3.0\pm0.4)\times10^{40}$ erg s$^{-1}$ in the 2-10 keV band., Comment: 14 pages, 12 figures, 7 tables. A soft X-ray excess above the 2-10 keV power law extrapolation is generally observed in AGN X-ray spectra. Presently there are two competitive models to explain it: blurred ionized reflection and warm Comptonisation. In the latter case, observations suggest a corona temperature $\sim$ 1 keV and a corona optical depth $\sim$ 10. Moreover, radiative constraints from spectral fits with Comptonisation models suggest that most of the accretion power should be released in the warm corona. The disk below is basically non-dissipative, radiating only the reprocessed emission from the corona. The true radiative properties of such a warm and optically thick plasma are not well-known, however. For instance, the importance of the Comptonisation process, the potential presence of strong absorption/emission features or the spectral shape of the output spectrum have been studied only very recently. We present in this paper simulations of warm and optically thick coronae using the TITAN radiative transfer code coupled with the NOAR Monte-Carlo code, the latter fully accounting for Compton scattering of continuum and lines. Illumination from above by a hard X-ray emission and from below by an optically thick accretion disk is taken into account as well as (uniform) internal heating. Our simulations show that for a large part of the parameter space, the warm corona with sufficient internal mechanical heating is dominated by Compton cooling and neither strong absorption nor emission lines are present in the outgoing spectra. In a smaller part of the parameter space, the calculated emission agrees with the spectral shape of the observed soft X-ray excess. Remarkably, this also corresponds to the conditions of radiative equilibrium of an extended warm corona covering almost entirely a non-dissipative accretion disk. We test the two-corona accretion scenario for active galactic nuclei in the case of the `bare' Seyfert 1 galaxy HE 1143-1810. We perform a detailed study of the broad-band UV--X-ray spectral properties and of the short-term variability. We present results of a joint XMM-Newton and NuSTAR monitoring of the source, consisting of 5x20 ks observations, each separated by 2 days, performed in December 2017. The source is variable in flux among the different observations, and a correlation is observed between the UV and X-ray emission. Moderate spectral variability is observed in the soft band. The time-averaged X-ray spectrum exhibits a cut-off at $\sim 100$ keV consistent with thermal Comptonization. We detect an iron K$\alpha$ line consistent with being constant during the campaign and originating from a mildly ionized medium. The line is accompanied by a moderate, ionized reflection component. A soft excess is clearly present below 2 keV and is well described by thermal Comptonization in a `warm' corona with a temperature of $\sim 0.5$ keV and a Thomson optical depth of $\sim 17-18$. For the hot hard X-ray emitting corona, we obtain a temperature of $\sim 20$ keV and an optical depth of $\sim 4$ assuming a spherical geometry. A fit assuming a jet-emitting disc (JED) for the hot corona also provides a nice description of the broad-band spectrum. In this case, the data are consistent with an accretion rate varying between $\sim 0.7$ and $\sim 0.9$ in Eddington units and a transition between the outer standard disc and the inner JED at $\sim 20$ gravitational radii. The broad-band high-energy data agree with an accretion flow model consisting of two phases: an outer standard accretion disc with a warm upper layer, responsible for the optical--UV emission and the soft X-ray excess, and an inner slim JED playing the role of a hard X-ray emitting hot corona., Comment: accepted for publication in A&A. Context. Obscuration events caused by outflowing clumps or streams of high column density, low ionisation gas, heavily absorbing the X-ray continuum, have been witnessed in a number of Seyfert galaxies. Aims. We report on the X-ray spectral-timing analysis of the December 2016 obscuration event in NGC 3783, aimed at probing variability of the X-ray obscurer on the shortest possible timescales. The main goals of this study are to obtain independent constraints on the density, and ultimately on the distance of the obscuring gas, as well as to characterise the impact of variable obscuration on the observed X-ray spectral-timing characteristics of Seyfert galaxies. Methods. We carried out a comparative analysis of NGC 3783 during unobscured (using archival 2000-2001 XMM-Newton data) and obscured states (using XMM-Newton and NuSTAR data from the 2016 observational campaign). The timescales analysed range between ten hours and about one hour. This study was then generalized to discuss the signatures of variable obscuration in the X-ray spectral-timing characteristics of Seyfert galaxies as a function of the physical properties of the obscuring gas. Results. The X-ray obscurer in NGC 3783 is found to vary on timescales between about one hour to ten hours. This variability is incoherent with the variations of the X-ray continuum. A fast response (on timescales shorter than about 1.5 ks) of the ionisation state of the obscuring gas to the short timescale variability of the primary X-ray continuum provides a satisfactory interpretation of all the observed X-ray spectral-timing properties. This study enabled us to put independent constraints on the density and location of the obscuring gas. We found the gas to have a density of $n_{e}> 7.1 \times 10^7 \rm{cm^{-3}}$, consistent with being part of the broad line region., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A, corrected typo in Fig. 8

Purpose: Double diffusion encoding (DDE) MRI enables the estimation of microscopic diffusion anisotropy, yielding valuable information on tissue microstructure. A recent study proposed that the acquisition of rotationally invariant DDE metrics, typically obtained using a spherical "5-design", could be greatly simplified by assuming Gaussian diffusion, facilitating reduced acquisition times that are more compatible with clinical settings. Here, we aim to validate the new minimal acquisition scheme against the standard DDE 5-design, and to quantify the proposed method's noise robustness to facilitate future clinical use. Methods: DDE MRI experiments were performed on both ex vivo and in vivo rat brains at 9.4 T using the 5-design and the proposed minimal design and taking into account the difference in the number of acquisitions. The ensuing microscopic fractional anisotropy ({\mu}FA) maps were compared over a range of b-values up to 5000 s/mm2. Noise robustness was studied using analytical calculations and numerical simulations. Results: The minimal protocol quantified {\mu}FA at an accuracy comparable to the estimates obtained via the more theoretically robust DDE 5-design. {\mu}FA's sensitivity to noise was found to strongly depend on compartment anisotropy and tensor magnitude in a non-linear fashion. When {\mu}FA < 0.75 or when mean diffusivity is particularly low, very high signal to noise ratio (SNR) is required for precise quantification of {\mu}FA. Conclusion: Our work supports using DDE for quantifying microscopic diffusion anisotropy in clinical settings but raises hitherto overlooked precision issues when measuring {\mu}FA with DDE and typical clinical SNR.

The primary X-ray emission in active galactic nuclei (AGNs) is widely believed to be due to Comptonisation of the thermal radiation from the accretion disc in a corona of hot electrons. The resulting spectra can, in first approximation, be modelled with a cut-off power law, the photon index and the high-energy roll-over encoding information on the physical properties of the X-ray-emitting region. The photon index and the high-energy curvature of AGNs ($\Gamma$, E$_c$) have been largely studied since the launch of X-ray satellites operating above 10 keV. However, high-precision measurements of these two observables have only been obtained in recent years thanks to the unprecedented sensitivity of NuSTAR up to 79 keV. We aim at deriving relations between phenomenological parameters ($\Gamma$ and E$_c$) and the intrinsic properties of the X-ray-emitting region (the hot corona), namely the optical depth and temperature. We use MoCA (Monte Carlo code for Comptonisation in Astrophysics) to produce synthetic spectra for the case of an AGN with M$_{BH}$=1.5$\times$10$^8$ M$_{sun}$ and accretion rate of 10% and then compared them with the widely used power-law model with an exponential high-energy cutoff. We provide phenomenological relations relating $\Gamma$ and E$_c$ with the opacity and temperature of the coronal electrons for the case of spherical and slab-like coronae. These relations give origin to a well defined parameter space which fully contains the observed values. Exploiting the increasing number of high-energy cut-offs quoted in the literature, we report on the comparison of physical quantities obtained using MoCA with those estimated using commonly adopted spectral Comptonisation models. We model the ultraviolet spectra of the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC~5548 obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope during the 6-month reverberation-mapping campaign in 2014. Our model of the emission from NGC 5548 corrects for overlying absorption and deblends the individual emission lines. Using the modeled spectra, we measure the response to continuum variations for the deblended and absorption-corrected individual broad emission lines, the velocity-dependent profiles of Ly$\alpha$ and C IV, and the narrow and broad intrinsic absorption features. We find that the time lags for the corrected emission lines are comparable to those for the original data. The velocity-binned lag profiles of Ly$\alpha$ and C IV have a double-peaked structure indicative of a truncated Keplerian disk. The narrow absorption lines show delayed response to continuum variations corresponding to recombination in gas with a density of $\sim 10^5~\rm cm^{-3}$. The high-ionization narrow absorption lines decorrelate from continuum variations during the same period as the broad emission lines. Analyzing the response of these absorption lines during this period shows that the ionizing flux is diminished in strength relative to the far-ultraviolet continuum. The broad absorption lines associated with the X-ray obscurer decrease in strength during this same time interval. The appearance of X-ray obscuration in $\sim\,2012$ corresponds with an increase in the luminosity of NGC 5548 following an extended low state. We suggest that the obscurer is a disk wind triggered by the brightening of NGC 5548 following the decrease in size of the broad-line region during the preceding low-luminosity state., Comment: 50 pages, 30 figures, uses aastex62.cls. X-ray reverberation mapping has emerged as a powerful probe of microparsec scales around AGN, and with high sensitivity detectors, its full potential in echo-mapping the otherwise inaccessible disk-corona at the black hole horizon scale will be revealed., Comment: Science White Paper submitted to Astro2020 Decadal Survey

X-ray observations suggest high compactness of coronae in active galactic nuclei as well as in X-ray binaries. The compactness of the source implies a strong radial dependence in the illumination of the accretion disc. This will, for any reasonable radial profile of the density, lead to a radial profile of the disc ionisation. Svoboda et al. (2012) showed on a single example that assuming a radially-structured ionisation profile of the disc can cause an artificial increase of the radial-emissivity parameter. We further investigate how the X-ray spectra are modified and quantify this effect for a wide range of parameters. Computations are carried out with the current state-of-the-art models for relativistic reflection. We simulated spectra using the response files of the micro-calorimeter X-IFU, which is planned to be on board of Athena. We assumed typical parameters for X-ray bright Seyfert-1 galaxies and considered two scenarios for the disc ionisation: 1) a radial profile for the disc ionisation, 2) a constant disc ionisation. We found that steep emissivity profiles can be indeed achieved due to the radial profile of the disc ionisation, which becomes more important for the cases where the corona is located at low heights above the black hole and this effect may be even more prominent than the geometrical effects. We also found that the cases with high inner disc ionisation, rapidly decreasing with radius, may result in an inaccurate black hole spin measurements., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

[Abridged] In our previous work on Ark 120, we found that its 2014 X-ray spectrum is dominated by Comptonisation, while the relativistic reflection emission only originates at tens of $R_{\rm g}$ from the SMBH. As a result, we could not constrain the SMBH spin from disc reflection alone. Our aim is to determine its SMBH spin from an alternative technique based on the global energetics of the disc-corona system. The spectral analysis uses simultaneous XMM-Newton (OM and pn) and NuSTAR observations on 2014 March 22 and 2013 February 18. We applied the optxconv model (based on optxagnf) to self consistently reproduce the emission from the inner corona (warm and hot thermal Comptonisation) and the outer disc (colour temperature corrected black body), taking into account both the disc inclination angle and relativistic effects. We modelled the mild relativistic reflection of the incident Comptonisation components using the xilconv model. We infer a SMBH spin of 0.83$^{+0.05}_{-0.03}$, adopting the SMBH reverberation mass of 1.50$\times$10$^{8}$ M$_{\odot}$. In addition, we find that the coronal radius decreases with increasing flux (by about a factor of two), from 85$^{+13}_{-10}$ $R_{\rm g}$ in 2013 to 14$\pm$3 $R_{\rm g}$ in 2014. This is the first time that such a constraint is obtained for a SMBH spin from this technique, thanks to the bare properties of Ark 120, its well determined SMBH mass, and the presence of a mild relativistic reflection component in 2014 which allows us to constrain the disc inclination angle. We caution that these results depend on the detailed disc-corona structure, which is not yet fully established. It is widely believed that the primary X-ray emission of AGN is due to the Comptonisation of optical-UV photons from a hot electron corona, while the origin of the 'soft-excess' is still uncertain and matter of debate. A second Comptonisation component, called warm corona, was therefore proposed to account for the soft-excess, and found in agreement with the optical-UV to X-ray emission of a sample of Seyfert galaxies. In this context, we exploit the broadband XMM-Newton and NuSTAR simultaneous observations of the Seyfert galaxy NGC 4593 to further test the so called "two corona model". The NGC 4593 spectra are well reproduced by the model, from the optical/UV to the hard X-rays. Moreover, the data reveal a significant correlation between the hot and the warm corona parameters during our monitoring campaign., Comment: 11 pages, 11 figures. Accepted for publication in MNRAS

The spectral shape of the hard X-ray continuum of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) can be ascribed to inverse Compton scattering of optical/UV seed photons from the accretion disc by a hot corona of electrons. This physical process produces a polarization signal which is strongly sensitive to the geometry of the scattering medium (i.e. the hot corona) and of the radiation field. MoCA (Monte Carlo code for Comptonisation in Astrophysics) is a versatile code which allows for different geometries and configurations to be tested for Compton scattering in compact objects. A single photon approach is considered as well as polarisation and Klein-Nishina effects. In this work, we selected four different geometries for the scattering electrons cloud above the accretion disc, namely an extended slab, an extended spheroid and two compact spheroids. We discuss the first application of the MoCA model to reproduce the hard X-ray primary continuum of the bare Seyfert 1 galaxy Ark 120, using different geometries for the hot corona above the accretion disc. We report on the spectral analysis of the simultaneous 2013 and 2014 XMM-Newton and NuSTAR observations of the source. A general agreement is found between the best fit values of the hot coronal parameters obtained with MoCA and the ones inferred using other Comptonisation codes from the literature. The expected polarization signal from the best fits with MoCA is then presented and discussed, in view of the launch in 2021 of the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE). We find that none of the tested geometries for the hot corona (extended slab and extended/compact spheroids) can be statistically preferred, based on spectroscopy solely. In the future, an IXPE observation less than 1 Ms long will clearly distinguish between an extended slab or a spherical hot corona., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures. Accepted for publication in A&A

The Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 2992 has been monitored eight times by XMM-Newton in 2010 and then observed again in 2013, while in 2015 it was simultaneously targeted by Swift and NuSTAR. XMM-Newton always caught the source in a faint state (2-10 keV fluxes ranging from 0.3 to 1.6$\times10^{-11}$ erg cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$) but NuSTAR showed an increase in the 2-10 keV flux up to 6$\times10^{-11}$ erg cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$. We find possible evidence of an Ultra Fast Outflow with velocity $v_1=0.21\pm0.01c$ (detected at about 99% confidence level) in such a flux state. The UFO in NGC 2992 is consistent with being ejected at a few tens of gravitational radii only at accretion rates greater than 2% of the Eddington luminosity. The analysis of the low flux 2010/2013 XMM data allowed us to determine that the Iron K$\alpha$ emission line complex in this object is likely the sum of three distinct components: a constant, narrow one due to reflection from cold, distant material (likely the molecular torus); a narrow, but variable one which is more intense in brighter observations and a broad relativistic one emitted in the innermost regions of the accretion disk, which has been detected only in the 2003 XMM observation., Comment: 13 pages, 11 figures, 4 tables, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present the analysis of five joint XMM-Newton/NuSTAR observations, 20 ks each and separated by 12 days, of the broad-line radio galaxy 3C 382. The data were obtained as part of a campaign performed in September-October 2016 simultaneously with VLBA. The radio data and their relation with the X-ray ones will be discussed in a following paper. The source exhibits a moderate flux variability in the UV/X-ray bands, and a limited spectral variability especially in the soft X-ray band. In agreement with past observations, we find the presence of a warm absorber, an iron K$\alpha$ line with no associated Compton reflection hump, and a variable soft excess well described by a thermal Comptonization component. The data are consistent with a "two-corona" scenario, in which the UV emission and soft excess are produced by a warm ($kT \simeq 0.6$ keV), optically thick ($\tau \simeq 20$) corona consistent with being a slab fully covering a nearly passive accretion disc, while the hard X-ray emission is due to a hot corona intercepting roughly 10 per cent of the soft emission. These results are remarkably similar to those generally found in radio-quiet Seyferts, thus suggesting a common accretion mechanism., Comment: 13 pages, 11 figures. Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We discuss the results on the hot corona parameters of Active Galactic Nuclei that have been recently measured with NuSTAR. The values taken from the literature of a sample of nineteen bright Seyfert galaxies are analysed. Aims. The aim of this work is to look for correlations between coronal parameters, such as the photon index and cutoff energy (when a phenomenological model is adopted) or the optical depth and temperature (when a Comptonization model is used), with other parameters of the systems like the black hole mass or the Eddington ratio. We analysed the coronal parameters of the nineteen unobscured, bright Seyfert galaxies that are present in the Swift-BAT 70 months catalogue and that have been observed by NuSTAR, alone or simultaneously with others X-rays observatories such as Swift, Suzaku or XMM-Newton. We found an anti-correlation with a significance level > 98% between the coronal optical depth and the coronal temperature of our sample. On the other hand, no correlation between the above parameters and the black hole mass, the accretion rate and the intrinsic spectral slope of the sources is found.

The X-ray spectra of many active galactic nuclei (AGN) show a soft X-ray excess below 1-2 keV on top of the extrapolated high- energy power law. The origin of this component is uncertain. It could be a signature of relativistically blurred, ionized reflection, or the high-energy tail of thermal Comptonization in a warm (kT $\sim$ 1 keV), optically thick ($\tau\simeq$ 10-20) corona producing the optical/UV to soft X-ray emission. The purpose of the present paper is to test the warm corona model on a statistically significant sample of unabsorbed, radio-quiet AGN with XMM-newton archival data, providing simultaneous optical/UV and X-ray coverage. The sample has 22 objects and 100 observations. We use two thermal comptonization components to fit the broad-band spectra, one for the warm corona emission and one for the high-energy continuum. In the optical-UV, we also include the reddening, the small blue bump and the Galactic extinction. In the X-rays, we include a WA and a neutral reflection. The model gives a good fit (reduced $\chi^2 <1.5$) to more than 90% of the sample. We find the temperature of the warm corona to be uniformly distributed in the 0.1-1 keV range, while the optical depth is in the range $\sim$10-40. These values are consistent with a warm corona covering a large fraction of a quasi-passive accretion disc, i.e. that mostly reprocesses the warm corona emission. The disk intrinsic emission represents no more than 20% of the disk total emission. We report on the NuSTAR observations of two bright Seyfert 1 galaxies, namely MCG +8-11-11 (100 ks) and NGC 6814 (150 ks). The main goal of these observations was to investigate the Comptonization mechanisms acting in the innermost regions of AGN which are believed to be responsible for the UV/X-ray emission. The spectroscopic analysis of the NuSTAR spectra of these two sources revealed that although they had different properties overall (black hole masses, luminosity and Eddington ratios) they had very similar coronal properties. Both presented a power law spectrum with a high-energy cutoff at $\sim 150-200$ keV, a relativistically broadened Fe K$\alpha$ line and the associated disk reflection component, plus a narrow iron line likely emitted in Compton thin and distant matter. The intrinsic continuum was well described by Comptonization models that show for MCG +8-11-11 a temperature of the coronal plasma of kT$_{\rm e} \sim$ 60 keV and an extrapolated optical depth $\tau$=1.8; for NGC 6814 the coronal temperature was kT$_{\rm e} \sim$ 45 keV with an extrapolated optical depth of $\tau$=2.5. We compare and discuss these values to some most common Comptonization models which aim at explaining the energy production and stability of coronae in active galactic nuclei.

We perform an X-ray spectral analysis of the brightest and cleanest bare AGN known so far, Ark 120, in order to determine the process(es) at work in the vicinity of the SMBH. We present spectral analysis of data from an extensive campaign observing Ark 120 in X-rays with XMM-Newton (4$\times$120 ks, 2014 March 18-24), and NuSTAR (65.5 ks, 2014 March 22). During this very deep X-ray campaign, the source was caught in a high flux state similar to the earlier 2003 XMM-Newton observation, and about twice as bright as the lower-flux observation in 2013. The spectral analysis confirms the "softer when brighter" behaviour of Ark 120. The four XMM-Newton/pn spectra are characterized by the presence of a prominent soft X-ray excess and a significant FeK$\alpha$ complex. The continuum is very similar above about 3 keV, while significant variability is present for the soft X-ray excess. We find that relativistic reflection from a constant-density, flat accretion disk cannot simultaneously produce the soft excess, broad FeK$\alpha$ complex, and hard X-ray excess. Instead, Comptonization reproduces the broadband (0.3-79 keV) continuum well, together with a contribution from a mildly relativistic disk reflection spectrum. During this 2014 observational campaign, the soft X-ray spectrum of Ark 120 below $\sim$0.5 keV was found to be dominated by Comptonization of seed photons from the disk by a warm ($kT_{\rm e}$$\sim$0.5 keV), optically-thick corona ($\tau$$\sim$9). Above this energy, the X-ray spectrum becomes dominated by Comptonization from electrons in a hot optically thin corona, while the broad FeK$\alpha$ line and the mild Compton hump result from reflection off the disk at several tens of gravitational radii., Comment: 16 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

In 2016 we carried out a Swift monitoring program to track the X-ray hardness variability of eight type-I AGN over a year. The purpose of this monitoring was to find intense obscuration events in AGN, and thereby study them by triggering joint XMM-Newton, NuSTAR, and HST observations. We successfully accomplished this for NGC 3783 in December 2016. We found heavy X-ray absorption produced by an obscuring outflow in this AGN. As a result of this obscuration, interesting absorption features appear in the UV and X-ray spectra, which are not present in the previous epochs. Namely, the obscuration produces broad and blue-shifted UV absorption lines of Ly$\alpha$, C IV, and N V, together with a new high-ionisation component producing Fe XXV and Fe XXVI absorption lines. In soft X-rays, only narrow emission lines stand out above the diminished continuum as they are not absorbed by the obscurer. Our analysis shows that the obscurer partially covers the central source with a column density of few $10^{23}$ cm$^{-2}$, outflowing with a velocity of few thousand km s$^{-1}$. The obscuration in NGC 3783 is variable and lasts for about a month. Unlike the commonly-seen warm-absorber winds at pc-scale distances from the black hole, the eclipsing wind in NGC 3783 is located at about 10 light days. Our results suggest the obscuration is produced by an inhomogeneous and clumpy medium, consistent with clouds in the base of a radiatively-driven disk wind at the outer broad-line region of the AGN., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics (A&A), 6 pages, 6 figures

We present results from a coordinated $XMM$-$Newton$+$NuSTAR$ observation of the type 1.8 Seyfert galaxy IRAS 13197-1627. This is a highly complex source, with strong contributions from relativistic reflection from the inner accretion disk, neutral absorption and further reprocessing by more distant material, and ionised absorption from an outflow. We undertake a detailed spectral analysis combining the broadband coverage provided by $XMM$-$Newton$+$NuSTAR$ with a multi-epoch approach incorporating archival observations performed by $XMM$-$Newton$ and $Suzaku$. Our focus is on characterising the reflection from the inner accretion disk, which previous works have suggested may dominate the AGN emission, and constraining the black hole spin. Using lamppost disk reflection models, we find that the results for the inner disk are largely insensitive to assumptions regarding the geometry of the distant reprocessor and the precise form of the illuminating X-ray continuum. However, these results do depend on the treatment of the iron abundance of the distant absorber/reprocessor. The multi-epoch data favour a scenario in which the AGN is chemically homogeneous, and we find that a rapidly rotating black hole is preferred, with $a^* \geq 0.7$, but a slowly-rotating black hole is not strongly excluded. In addition to the results for the inner disk, we also find that both the neutral and ionised absorbers vary from epoch to epoch, implying that both have some degree of inhomogeneity in their structure., Comment: 15 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS
