Abstract

The effect of oxygen adsorption on the local structure and electronic properties of monolayer graphene grown on SiC(0001) has been studied by means of Low Energy Electron Microscopy (LEEM), microprobe Low Energy Electron Diffraction (\muLEED) and microprobe Angle Resolved Photoemission (\muARPES). We show that the buffer layer of epitaxial graphene on SiC(0001) is partially decoupled after oxidation. The monitoring of the oxidation process demonstrates that the oxygen saturates the Si dangling bonds, breaks some Si-C bonds at the interface and intercalates the graphene layer. Accurate control over the oxidation parameters enables us to tune the charge density modulation in the layer., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

In this letter we report on transport measurements of epitaxial graphene on SiC(0001) with oxygen adsorption. In a $50\times 50 \mu\mathrm{m^2}$ size Hall bar we observe the half-integer quantum Hall effect with a transverse resistance plateau quantized at filling factor around $\nu = 2$, an evidence of monolayer graphene. We find low electron concentration of $9\times 10^{11} \textrm{cm}^{-2}$ and we show that a doping of $10^{13}\textrm{cm}^{-2}$ which is characteristic of intrinsic epitaxial graphene can be restored by vacuum annealing. The effect of oxygen adsorption on carrier density is confirmed by local angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements. These results are important for understanding oxygen adsorption on epitaxial graphene and for its application to metrology and mesoscopic physics where a low carrier concentration is required., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

59. Case series of vaping-associated lung illness related to use of nicotine-containing liquids

Abstract

AbstractRATIONALEThere is a limited description of cases of vaping-associated lung illness (VALI) associated with users that vape nicotine-based products.OBJECTIVESThe objectives of this study were to describe a series of patients that had VALI related to use of nicotine products.METHODSInvestigation of reported cases of VALI in the province of Québec, using chart review, public health investigation and analysis of vaping products when available.RESULTSSix VALI cases were reported and investigated in late Summer and Fall 2019. None of the cases used tetrahydrocannabinol (THC)-based vaping products. Three were former tobacco smokers while the rest were still actively smoking. Age ranged from 34 to 82 years old. Vaping products were analyzed for 2 patients, which did not reveal any vitamin E acetate. All cases had respiratory symptoms at presentation, 2 had gastro-intestinal symptoms and 3 had constitutional symptoms. Chest computed tomography (CT)-Scan showed ground glass opacities (GGO) for all 6 cases. Five patients were hospitalized and 2 patients were admitted to the intensive care unit. No patient died. One patient had repeated bouts of hospitalizations without much improvement until VALI was diagnosed.CONCLUSIONSIn Quebec, in the second half of 2019, 6 confirmed or probable VALI cases were reported and associated with the use of e-cigarettes with nicotine and flavors only (without THC), suggesting that chemicals present in the vaping liquid and/or the device itself can cause the illness. Former smokers or active smokers may also be at increased risk of developing VALI.

Abstract

We present energy filtered electron emission spectromicroscopy with spatial and wave-vector resolution on few layer epitaxial graphene on SiC$(000-1) grown by furnace annealing. Low energy electron microscopy shows that more than 80% of the sample is covered by 2-3 graphene layers. C1s spectromicroscopy provides an independent measurement of the graphene thickness distribution map. The work function, measured by photoelectron emission microscopy (PEEM), varies across the surface from 4.34 to 4.50eV according to both the graphene thickness and the graphene-SiC interface chemical state. At least two SiC surface chemical states (i.e., two different SiC surface structures) are present at the graphene/SiC interface. Charge transfer occurs at each graphene/SiC interface. K-space PEEM gives 3D maps of the k_|| pi - pi* band dispersion in micron scale regions show that the Dirac point shifts as a function of graphene thickness. Novel Bragg diffraction of the Dirac cones via the superlattice formed by the commensurately rotated graphene sheets is observed. The experiments underline the importance of lateral and spectroscopic resolution on the scale of future electronic devices in order to precisely characterize the transport properties and band alignments.

Abstract

Motivated by a concrete problem and with the goal of understanding the sense in which the complexity of streaming algorithms is related to the complexity of formal languages, we investigate the problem Dyck(s) of checking matching parentheses, with $s$ different types of parenthesis. We present a one-pass randomized streaming algorithm for Dyck(2) with space $\Order(\sqrt{n}\log n)$, time per letter $\polylog (n)$, and one-sided error. We prove that this one-pass algorithm is optimal, up to a $\polylog n$ factor, even when two-sided error is allowed. For the lower bound, we prove a direct sum result on hard instances by following the "information cost" approach, but with a few twists. Indeed, we play a subtle game between public and private coins. This mixture between public and private coins results from a balancing act between the direct sum result and a combinatorial lower bound for the base case. Surprisingly, the space requirement shrinks drastically if we have access to the input stream in reverse. We present a two-pass randomized streaming algorithm for Dyck(2) with space $\Order((\log n)^2)$, time $\polylog (n)$ and one-sided error, where the second pass is in the reverse direction. Both algorithms can be extended to Dyck(s) since this problem is reducible to Dyck(2) for a suitable notion of reduction in the streaming model., Comment: 20 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

Can one choose a good Huffman code on the fly, without knowing the underlying distribution? Online Slot Allocation (OS A) models this and similar problems: There are n slots, each with a known cost. There are n items. Requests for items are drawn i.i.d. from a fixed but hidden probability distribution p. After each request, if the item, i, was not previously requested, then the algorithm (knowing c and the requests so far, but not p) must place the item in some vacant slot ji, at cost Pic(ji). The goal is to minimize the total cost The optimal offline algorithm is trivial: put the most probable item in the cheapest slot, the second most probable item in the second cheapest slot, etc. The optimal online algorithm is First Come First Served (FCFS): put the first requested item in the cheapest slot, the second (distinct) requested item in the second cheapest slot, etc. The optimal competitive ratios for any online algorithm are 1 4- Hn-1 ∼ In n for general costs and 2 for concave costs. For logarithmic costs, the ratio is, asymptotically, 1: FCFS gives cost OPT + O(logOPT). Abstract

Background/Aim: Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease that involves the development of autoantibodies against pancreatic islet beta‐cell antigens, preceding clinical diagnosis by a period of preclinical disease activity. As screening activity to identify autoantibody‐positive individuals increases, a rise in presymptomatic type 1 diabetes individuals seeking medical attention is expected. Current guidance on how to monitor these individuals in a safe but minimally invasive way is limited. This article aims to provide clinical guidance for monitoring individuals with presymptomatic type 1 diabetes to reduce the risk of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) at diagnosis. Methods: Expert consensus was obtained from members of the Fr1da, GPPAD, and INNODIA consortia, three European diabetes research groups. The guidance covers both specialist and primary care follow‐up strategies. Results: The guidance outlines recommended monitoring approaches based on age, disease stage and clinical setting. Individuals with presymptomatic type 1 diabetes are best followed up in specialist care. For stage 1, biannual assessments of random plasma glucose and HbA1c are suggested for children, while annual assessments are recommended for adolescents and adults. For stage 2, 3‐monthly clinic visits with additional home monitoring are advised. The value of repeat OGTT in stage 1 and the use of continuous glucose monitoring in stage 2 are discussed. Primary care is encouraged to monitor individuals who decline specialist care, following the guidance presented. Conclusions: As type 1 diabetes screening programs become more prevalent, effective monitoring strategies are essential to mitigate the risk of complications such as DKA. This guidance serves as a valuable resource for clinicians, providing practical recommendations tailored to an individual's age and disease stage, both within specialist and primary care settings. Abstract

Background: In Quebec, Canada, a school-based HPV vaccination for girls has been offered since 2008. The vaccine used in the program targets HPV16/18, responsible for ∼70% of cervical cancers and HPV6/11, responsible for the majority of anogenital warts. The objective of this study was to assess the prevalence of HPV in vaccinated and unvaccinated women. Methods: Women aged 17–29 years were eligible to participate. Participants' age, vaccination status and diverse risk factors were assessed by a computer-assisted questionnaire. Biological specimens were obtained by self-sampling. HPV genotyping was performed by Linear Array. Results: A total of 2,118 women were recruited. 2,042 completed the questionnaire and 1,937 provided a vaginal sample. Vaccination coverage varied from 83.5% in women aged 17–19 to 19.1% in those aged 23–29. The overall prevalence of HPV in sexually active women was 39.4% (95%CI: 37.0-41.7) and 56.7% of infected women had multiple type infections. The prevalence of vaccine HPV types varied by age and vaccination status except for women aged 23–29 for whom similar results were observed. Abstract

The active metabolite of vitamin D3, 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3, is a secosteroid hormone that regulates calcium and bone metabolism, controls cell proliferation and differentiation, and plays an important role as an immunomodulator. Recent advances in understanding the mechanisms underlying 1,25(OH)2D3 immune actions expand the range of the therapeutic implications of 1,25(OH)2D3 and its analogs. This review will cover the current knowledge on vitamin D-mediated immunotolerance and recent advances in vitamin D-based therapies for the treatment of autoimmune disease and the prevention of graft rejection in renal transplantation. Initiation of vitamin D-based therapies at earlier stages of chronic kidney disease may impact the immune status of patients who progress to require dialysis or transplantation.

Solar radiation and cigarette smoke are two environmental risk factors known to affect skin integrity. Although the toxic effects of these factors on skin have been widely studied separately, few studies have focused on their interaction. The objective of this study was to evaluate and understand the synergistic harmful effects of cigarette smoke and solar rays on human primary keratinocytes. The keratinocytes were exposed to cigarette smoke extract (CSE) and then irradiated with a solar simulator light (SSL). Abstract

The sharing and application of knowledge in intellectual disabilities care are vital and challenging. Therefore, organizations providing care and support for people with intellectual disabilities use strategies to stimulate these processes. To optimize these strategies, we investigated the contextual factors that influence their execution. We conducted individual, in-depth, semi-structured interviews with 11 CEOs of organizations providing care for people with intellectual disabilities in the Netherlands. A thematic data analysis was conducted in which a deductive approach was followed by a bottom-up clustering. We thus identified factors related to both the internal and the external context. The internal context involves persons within the organization and the organizational structures. The external context involves the organization's socio-political environment and collaborative partnerships. We concluded that the execution of strategies to improve the sharing and application of knowledge is influenced by contextual factors which appear to be interconnected. These contextual factors point to the key role played by care professionals.
