Abstract

This paper is devoted to the complexity analysis of a particular property, called geometric robustness owned by all known symbolic methods of parametric polynomial equation solving (geometric elimination). It is shown that any parametric elimination procedure which owns this property must necessarily have an exponential sequential time complexity even if highly performant data structures (as e.g. the straight--line program encoding of polynomials) are used. The paper finishes with the motivated introduction of a new non-uniform complexity measure for zero-dimensional polynomial equation systems, called elimination complexity., Sociedad Argentina de Informática e Investigación Operativa

90. Reduction of the intestinal endotoxin pool by three different SDD regimens in human volunteers.

Abstract

Aerobic Gram-negative bacilli (AGNB) carried in the gut by healthy individuals generate 1 mg of 'physiological' endotoxin per g of faeces. Successful eradication of AGNB from the gut would be expected to lead to a lowering of the intestinal endotoxin pool. This prompted us to evaluate the reduction of intestinal endotoxin in 6 healthy volunteers who each received 3 different oral antibiotic regimens. Regimen 1 was polymyxin E (600 mg/day), regimen 2 polymyxin E (400 mg/day) combined with tobramycin (320 mg/day) and regimen 3 pefloxacin (800 mg/day). Each regimen was separated by an antibiotic free period of 3 months. A faecal sample (minimally 2 g) was obtained from each volunteer, before treatment began and afterwards 3 times a week on alternating days (Monday, Wednesday, Friday) for 3 weeks. Each volunteer produced 30 samples, 10 each per oral antibiotic. The samples were serially diluted in nutrient broth for the colony count of AGNB, whilst endotoxin was measured using the classical Limulus amoebocyte lysate micro-assay. The base-line value of faecal AGNB was 10 3-4 colony forming units/g of faeces. All samples obtained on day 3 following antibiotic intake were negative for AGNB, and remained negative during antibiotic intake. The AGNB free carrier state was associated with a reduction in gut endotoxin. The reduction was approximately 10 ng (1 log) for polymyxin E and pefloxacin, whilst the combination of polymyxin/tobramycin significantly reduced the intestinal endotoxin concentrations from 1 mg to 100 ng in the gut; a reduction of 104. Although AGNB were killed by the three regimens, the 'free' endotoxin left in the gut was effectively neutralised by the combination polymyxin/tobramycin only. From a clinical point of view, gut-derived endotoxaemia may play a role in the systemic inflammatory response syndrome and hence the outcome, in critically ill intensive care patients. This study supports other work which indicates that mortality is significantly reduced in only those intensive care patients who received oral polymyxin/tobramycin. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

94. Laser processing of TiSi2 and CoSi2 thin films on silicon (100) substrates

Abstract

Abstract: We have investigated the formation of TiSi2 and CoSi2 thin films on Si(100) substrates using laser (wave length 248 nm, pulse duration 40 ns and repetition rate 5 Hz) physical vapor deposition (LPVD). The films were deposited from solid targets of TiSi2 and CoSi2 in vacuum with the substrate temperature optimized at 600� C. The films were characterized using x-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and four point probe ac resistivity. The films were found to be polycrystalline with a texture. The room temperature resistivity was found to be 16 μΩ-@#@ cm and 23 μΩ-cm for TiSi2 and CoSi2 films, respectively. We optimized the processing parameters so as to get particulate free surface. TEM results show that the silicide/silicon interface is quite smooth and there is no perceptible interdiffusion across the interface.

95. Beneficial effects of a 5-lipoxygenase inhibitor in endotoxic shock in the rat.

Abstract

The effects of a highly selective 5-lipoxygenase inhibitor, CGS8515 [methyl 2-[(3,4-dihydro-3,4-dioxo-1-naphthalenyl) amino]benzoate], on endotoxic shock sequelae and eicosanoid synthesis by peritoneal macrophages were evaluated in the rat. Pretreatment of peritoneal macrophages in vitro with CGS8515 significantly inhibited the synthesis (P less than .01) of immunoreactive leukotriene C4/leukotriene D4 stimulated by the calcium ionophore (A23187). Inhibition of 5-lipoxygenase produced significant shunting to immunoreactive thromboxane B2 formation (P less than .05). In rats sedated with ketamine.HCl (82.5 mg/kg) and xylazine. HCl (27.5 mg/kg), i.v. injection of Salmonella enteritidis endotoxin (25 mg/kg i.v.) produced significant decreases at 30 min in mean arterial pressure (from 89 +/- 4 to 44 +/- 8 mm Hg, N = 5, P less than .001); in white blood cell count (from 10.8 +/- 0.6 to 6.5 +/- 0.8 x 10(3)/mm3, N = 5, P less than .01); in platelet count (from 687 +/- 66 to 392 +/- 65 x 10(3)/mm3, N = 5, P less than .01); and produced an increase of hematocrit (from 46 +/- 1.2 to 57.4 +/- 1.8%, N = 5, P less than .03). CGS8515 (5 mg/kg i.v. 30 min before endotoxin injection, N = 6) blunted the endotoxin-induced hypotension by 35% (P less than .001), the leukopenia by 24% (P less than .03), the thrombocytopenia by 45% (P less than .006) and the hemoconcentration by 16% (P less than .03), compared to the shocked control rats 30 min after endotoxin injection.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

100. Utilization of guidelines for the management of hypertension in cardiovascular risk scoring of renal patients

Abstract

Recent guidelines for the management of hypertension by the European Societies of Hypertension and Cardiology (ESH-ESC), consider, besides normal and normal high blood pressure, also early renal failure as a significant factor scoring the individual cardiovascular (CV) risk in each patient. Considering that the nephrologists have not yet adopted a similar system to score CV risk in renal failure, we believed reasonable to evaluate whether the ESH-ESC guidelines were applicable to renal patients and to what extent useful to estimate the CV risk in chronic renal disease.According to the above-mentioned guidelines, CV risk score was evaluated in 386 ambulatory patients (212 M/174 F; aged 53 +/- 15 years) with the following clinical diagnosis: hypertension (n=48), lithiasis (n=49), chronic renal failure (n=182), transplantation (n=61) and dialysis (n=46).We obtained a "no score" group and five progressive risk classes graded from 1 to 5. Infact thirthyfour cases were not scored because of "optimal" blood pressure control, whilst the remaining 352 averaged a score of 3.9 +/- 1.1 ("high" CV risk condition). In these, all the scores were present and the distribution of cases evidenced a prevailing of score 4 and 5 in chronic renal failure (19 and 52% of the cases, respectively) and in transplantation (26% and 39%), but not in hypertension and lithiasis. In dialysis, only score 4 and 5 (35% and 59% respectively) occurred, while 4 cases (6%) were not scored due to "optimal" blood pressure values. Target organ damage, acquired clinical conditions, modifiable and non-modifiable risk factors had all a positive correlation with the risk score.Our study suggests that ESH-ESC guidelines for the management of hypertension can be used to obtain a global CV risk score also in chronic kidney diseases, with the exception of dialysis. In chronic renal failure, the risk of underestimating the real incidence of future CV events might be overcome, at least partially, by the possibility of highlighting in individual patients the concomitance of risk factors requiring a very early preventive and aggressive therapy.
