Abstract

The appropriation of internet-connected robots in the domestic context Based on the Italian data from a four country qualitative research (Australia, Belgium, Italy and the UK) carried out with children aged 8-to-10-years-old, the paper analyses the domestication of Cozmo, a social robotic toy. Robotic toys are conceptualised through the lens of the domestication of technology and drawing on the concept of “affordances-in-practice” (Costa, 2018) – that is, as the ongoing and always situated enactments of the properties of technological artefacts through practices of use-in-context. in order to investigate the digital- material assemblage of the robotic toy, children’s play practices, parents’ and children’s imaginaries of social robots, a child-centred qualitative research has been designed, which involved two family visits and engaged parents and children as co-researchers. Parents were asked to film their children’s interac- tions with Cozmo in between visits, whereas children co-constructed the stoy of Cozmo through the Book Creator app. Findings show how children enact the affordances of Cozmo based on its anthopomorfisation. More specifically, they enact its liveliness (through practices of care such as feeding the robot) and its affective stickiness (through the actualisation of an emotional bond). Less practised, instead, is the affordance of programmability.

Abstract

Holloway, Mascheroni and Inglis adopt critical discourse analysis to examine commercial discourses about baby wearables and find that advertisements use a “discourse of risk and responsibilisation” to heighten parental anxiety over their babies’ health. This discourse positions parents as having sole responsibility for their babies’ health, safety and development, and constructs the digital tracking of babies’ bodies as a virtuous parental practice. Such neoliberal responsibilisation also creates a discursive bridge between goods previously used only in the health care system and everyday parenting practices, in line with the medicalisation of childhood. Moreover, the authors find that while such parenting practices and their representations contribute to normalise commercial and intimate surveillance practices, they also intersect with I-pistemology, where personal (mediated) knowledge replaces expert knowledge.

Abstract

Social robots and the Internet of Toys represent key technologies in children’s future lives. Based on Winfield (Robotics: A Very Short Introduction. Oxford University Press, Oxford, 2012), we conceptualize the relationship between social robots and smart/connected toys with six characteristics: interactivity, energy, sensors, software control, movement and embodiment. These characteristics, in turn, help to classify social robots and smart/connected toys along three dimensions (i.e. horizontal, vertical and spatial integration), which suggests that the difference between social robots and smart/connected is rather subtle. We identify three common theoretical (absence or heterogeneity of theory, lacking developmental perspective, insufficient attention to intercultural differences) and three methodological issues (lack of standardized measures, study design issues, dominance of cross-sectional studies) that research on both social robots and the Internet of Toys needs to address.

Abstract

The Internet of Toys (IoToys) is a developing market within our Internet of Things (IoT) ecosystem. This book examines the rise of internet-connected toys and aims to anticipate the opportunities and risks of IoToys before their widespread diffusion. Contributors to this volume each provide a critical analysis of the design, production, regulation, representation and consumption of internet-connected toys. In order to address the theoretical, methodological and policy questions that arise from the study of these new playthings, and contextualise the diverse opportunities and challenges that IoToys pose to educators, families and children themselves, the chapters engage with notions of mediatization, datafication, robotification, connected and post-digital play. This timely engagement with a key transformation in children’s play will appeal to all readers interested in understanding the social uses and consequences of IoToys, and primarily to researchers and students in children and media, early childhood studies, media and communications, sociology, education, social psychology, law and design.

56. Postdigitality in children's crossmedia play: A case study of Nintendo's Amiibo figurines

Abstract

In this chapter, we use Nintendo Amiibo to interrogate the evolving intersection of crossmedia products and children’s cultures of play. Amiibo figurines are based on characters from various Nintendo franchises, such as Super Mario Bros., and use NFC tags to connect wirelessly to Nintendo’s Switch, 3DS and Wii U platforms. In their production, promotion and everyday use, the figurines solicit playful practices that cut across physical objects and digital spaces. Drawing on interface analysis, promotional discourses and videos of play on YouTube, this analysis highlights how Amiibos are framed as a means to envelop children in Nintendo’s crossmedia ecosystem by reinforcing a physical connection between child, toy, software, platform and intellectual property. Informed by the concept of postdigital play, we account for this reciprocal dynamic between children’s everyday play and the branded world of IoT products, and we point to emerging questions around children’s data literacies.

Abstract

The notion of the quantified self stems from the use of wearable smart devices and tracking apps. These technologies increasingly include monitoring apps or wearable technologies assisting parents in tracking their children’s health, or emotion-maximising educational apps that measure and gamify children’s educational achievement. Together with Internet of Things toys, self-tracking apps and devices concur to the datafication of children’s play, learning and health. Therefore, concerns have been raised as to whether these developments take into account children’s rights or respect their developmental, cognitive and emotional needs The chapter examines the emergent research on children’s self-tracking apps and wearables, and identifies key themes in the future research agenda, namely: the implications of these tools for children’s embodied experiences and literacy practices; the risks for children’s privacy rights and data security; the changes in parent-child and teacher-child relationships; the consequences of neoliberal self-tracking and the new politics of the body for children’s development and self-identity.

60. Datafied childhoods: Contextualising datafication in everyday life

Abstract

The article focuses on early childhood as a critical site of datafication and dataveillance. First, it provides an overview of approaches that situate the datafication of childhood within the new business logic and modes of governance called ‘surveillance capitalism’. Second, it presents approaches that theorise how surveillance culture has been normalised in a range of everyday family practices, including those supported by pregnancy and parenting apps, baby wearables and the Internet of Toys (IoToys). Finally, it develops the argument that we need to understand data traces as socially situated and account for the everyday embedding of algorithms in early childhood and family life, if we want to avoid the essentialism that characterises much of the debate around surveillance culture in the lives of young children.

Most of the public and academic discourses around the datafication of childhood have been characterised by three shortcomings, namely: immediacy, atomism and essentialism. This brings me to suggest a theoretical and methodological approach to the study of the datafication of childhood that would frame the social, cultural and ethical issues arising from internet-connected toys, wearables and other IoT devices as a matter of citizenship. 62. Addiction or emancipation? Children’s attachment to smartphones as a cultural practice

Abstract

The appropriation of smartphones by teenagers and, increasingly, children has raised concern over excessive use, a preoccupation which is sometimes shared by children themselves, complaining that smartphones have changed the context of face-to-face interactions with peers. Children also at times admit to be "addicted" to their phones, feeling the need to check the phone every moment or so. The issue of excessive use has originally been addressed within the field of internet studies through a medical/psychological framework: internet addiction is understood as an impulse-control disorder and as such it not dissimilar to other pathological conditions such as gambling or substance consumption. A medical approach to excessive use is problematic in the case of smartphones. Rather, mobile-specific approaches to young people's communication suggest to frame teenagers' attachment to their mobile phones through the lens of the "emancipation approach", according to which teenagers move out from family sphere through developing a stronger connection with the peer group, also by means of mobile communication. This chapter contrasts the two perspectives on excessive use of smartphones drawing on a quantitative and qualitative data collected across Europe as part of a research project on access and use of the internet from mobile devices among 9-to-16-year-old children. It also shows how looking at excessive smartphones use from a different perspective helps illuminate the process of incorporation of smartphones into every day life, understand how communicative affordances are socially negotiated, while highlighting the continuities with mobile phones and mobile communication in general. The current debate over the appropriate contexts and practices of smartphones use is indeed indicative of the stage of domestication of the device, suggesting that the technology has not yet been normalised and taken for granted. Abstract

It is with great pleasure that we present the 2018 Yearbook from the International Clearinghouse on Children, Youth and Media at Nordicom: Digital Parenting: The Challenges for Families in the Digital Age. The topics addressed in the 2018 Yearbook – how to relate to or mediate children’s use of digital media, generational gaps in the use of media and the use of social media to display or seek support in parenthood – are timely and relevant in many respects and have engaged many qualified scholars from around the world. Parenting in the digital media environment is a theme often discussed in news media and among parenting groups. Balancing the opportunities of digital media and at the same time considering potentially unwanted and/or negative effects can be a challenge, both for adults and for the younger generation. There are no established policies, long traditions or experience to turn to and many are seeking advice. The 2018 Yearbook is the result of a great collaborative effort. Nordicom is deeply grateful to the editors of this new anthology, Giovanna Mascheroni, Cristina Ponte and Ana Jorge, as well as to all the contributors who have made this publication possible. It is our hope that the collection of articles will make interesting reading all around the world, stimulate new research and debate and provide new ideas regarding the topical and highly relevant issue of being a parent in the digital age. Abstract

To verify whether it is possible, in people with diabetes mellitus (DM) considered at very high cardiovascular (CV) risk, stratify this risk better and identify significant modifiable risk factor (including lifestyle habits) to help patients and clinicians improve CV prevention. People with DM and microvascular diseases or one or more CV risk factors (hypertension, hyperlipidemia, smoking, poor dietary habits, overweight, physical inactivity) included in the Risk and Prevention study were selected. We considered the combined endpoint of non-fatal acute myocardial infarction and stroke and CV death. A multivariate Cox proportional analysis was carried out to identify relevant predictors. We also used the RECPAM method to identify subgroups of patients at higher risk. In our study, the rate of major CV events was lower than expected (5 % in 5 years). Predictors of CV events were age, male, sex, heart failure, previous atherosclerotic disease, atrial fibrillation, insulin treatment, high HbA1c, heart rate and other CV diseases while being physically active was protective. RECPAM analysis indicated that history of atherosclerotic diseases and a low BMI defined worse prognosis (HR 4.51 95 % CI 3.04–6.69). Among subjects with no previous atherosclerotic disease, men with HbA1c more than 8 % were at higher CV risk (HR 2.77; 95 % CI 1.86–4.14) with respect to women. In this population, the rate of major CV events was lower than expected. This prediction model could help clinicians identify people with DM at higher CV risk and support them in achieving goals of physical activity and HbA1c.

Abstract

Hand osteoarthritis (OA) is a common and potentially disabling disease, with different features from hip and knee OA so that a specific therapeutic approach is required. Evidence based recommendations for the management of hand OA were developed by the European League Against Rheumatism (EULAR) in 2006. The Italian Society for Rheumatology (SIR) aimed to update, adapt to national contest and disseminate the EULAR recommendations for the management of hand OA. The multidisciplinary group of experts included specialists involved in the management of patients with hand OA. In order to maintain consistency with EULAR recommendations, a similar methodology was utilized by the Italian group. The original propositions were reformulated in terms of a search query and for every recommendation a systematic search was conducted updating EULAR recommendations' review. The propositions were translated in Italian and reformulated basing on collected evidences and expert opinion. The strength of recommendation was measured for each proposition with the EULAR ordinal and visual analogue scales. The original 11 propositions of EULAR recommendations were translated and adapted to Italian context. Further evidences were collected about non-pharmacological therapies, local treatments, intra-articular injection with SYSADOA and corticosteroids, and surgery. The SIR has developed updated recommendations for the management of hand OA adapted to the Italian healthcare system. Their implementation in clinical practice is expected to improve the management of patients with hand OA.

Abstract

The article explores how a group of young people in Germany, Italy, and the United Kingdom experience and manage informal political talk on Facebook. Based on 60 interviews with 14- to 25-year-olds with diverse interest and participation in politics, it understands political talk as a social achievement dependent on the situational definition, shaped by the perceived imagined audiences, shared expectations, and technological affordances. Results show that young people construct different interactional contexts on Facebook depending on their political experiences, but also on their understanding of the affordances of networked publics as shaped by the social norms of their peer groups. Many youth define Facebook as an unsafe social setting for informal political discussions, thus adhering to a form of “publicness” aimed at neutralizing conflicts. Others, instead, develop different forms of “publicness” based on emergent communicative skills that help them manage the uncertainty of social media as interactional contexts.

Abstract

I dispositivi touchscreen come tablet e smartphone hanno modificato le forme e i tempi dell’uso internet, abbassando notevolmente l’età del primo accesso. I più piccoli accedono a smartphone e tablet per fruire di contenuti video, per giocare, o per usare app e contenuti educational. Bambini di età inferiore ai due anni, infatti, possiedono già le competenze di base per interagire con le tecnologie touchscreen (Marsh 2015), che favoriscono l’acquisizione di digital literacy e di emergent literacy – vale a dire, le prime competenze fonologiche e di scrittura. Questi processi di alfabetizzazione, secondo l’approccio socio-culturale delle new literacies, sono sempre situati e sociali. Come dimostrano le prime ricerche, le differenze sul piano delle pratiche d’uso di dispositivi touchscreen così come la mediazione parentale, sono legate anche a differenze socio-economiche e culturali. Inoltre la mediazione dell'uso dei dispositivi digitali da parte dei genitori dei bambini in età prescolare si trova stretta tra la pervasività di norme restrittive e basate sui rischi e la ridotta diffusione di modelli positivi di pratiche d'uso e di acquisizione di competenze. Il capitolo si propone di passare in rassegna le ricerche europee su questo tema, focalizzandosi sulla dimensione situata e sociale della (digital e emergent) literacy e sulle dinamiche parentali. In questo modo, si metteranno in luce le principali domande di ricerca e gli approcci teorici, che caratterizzano l’agenda di ricerca europea.

Abstract

Stroke is a leading cause of long-term morbidity and mortality affecting several hundred-thousand people annually in the Western Countries. Various panels of biomarkers of neural damage have been developed and validated. The primary objective of this investigation was to measure the correlation between the clinical severity of stroke and the serum/plasma concentrations of neural damage biomarkers.A prospective investigation was conducted on a panel of biomarkers composed of S100β, matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9), N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide (NT pro-BNP) and D-dimer at admission and after 24 hours, in a cohort patients with a confirmed diagnosis of stroke in an emergency setting (STROke-MArkers STROMA).A total of 58 consecutive patients were enrolled, no participant was excluded; according to clinical severity measured by National Institute of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) there were 29 minor strokes, 24 moderate, 3 moderate-severe, 2 severe. The Spearman's rank correlation test was used to assess the relationship between the baseline NIHSS value and the concentrations of the four biomarkers: all the studied biomarkers showed a statistically significant correlation with baseline NIHSS at 24 hours. A multivariate ordinal regression model was used to analyze the correlation of markers with stroke severity, stratified, according to NIHSS score: MMP-9 and S100β showed a statistically significant correlation after 24 hours.MMP-9, S100β, NT pro-BNP and D-dimer showed a good correlation with the clinical severity of stroke which may become an additional resource in the acute patient evaluation and potentially follow-up.

Abstract

Background Trials have shown a beneficial effect of n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids in patients with a previous myocardial infarction or heart failure. We evaluated the potential benefit of such therapy in patients with multiple cardiovascular risk factors or atherosclerotic vascular disease who had not had a myocardial infarction. Methods In this double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial, we enrolled a cohort of patients who were followed by a network of 860 general practitioners in Italy. Eligible patients were men and women with multiple cardiovascular risk factors or atherosclerotic vascular disease but not myocardial infarction. Patients were randomly assigned to n-3 fatty acids (1 g daily) or placebo (olive oil). The initially specified primary end point was the cumulative rate of death, nonfatal myocardial infarction, and nonfatal stroke. At 1 year, after the event rate was found to be lower than anticipated, the primary end point was revised as time to death from cardiovascular causes or admission to the hospital for cardiovascular causes. Results Of the 12,513 patients enrolled, 6244 were randomly assigned to n-3 fatty acids and 6269 to placebo. With a median of 5 years of follow-up, the primary end point occurred in 1478 of 12,505 patients included in the analysis (11.8%), of whom 733 of 6239 (11.7%) had received n-3 fatty acids and 745 of 6266 (11.9%) had received placebo (adjusted hazard ratio with n-3 fatty acids, 0.97; 95% confidence interval, 0.88 to 1.08; P=0.58). The same null results were observed for all the secondary end points. Conclusions In a large general-practice cohort of patients with multiple cardiovascular risk factors, daily treatment with n-3 fatty acids did not reduce cardiovascular mortality and morbidity. Abstract

The present article reports on findings from a survey administered in (country anonymised) to a national representative sample of parents of children aged 0-8 around their sharenting behaviour. We first frame sharenting as a complex phenomenon where gendered, generational and agentic matters intertwine and mingle in complex ways. We then report results from a cluster analysis aimed at identifying different sharenting styles reflecting the scale and scope of parents’ sharing behaviour among our sample. The relationships between sharenting styles and parents’ socio-demographics, as well as parental practices of privacy management are further explored and reported. Altogether, findings provide insights into the experience of sharenting in family life pointing to a variety of sharing practices, while also showing first that sharenting represents a key site of identity performance for young mothers, and then how parents negotiate and manage related issues of agency and privacy., Italian Sociological Review, Vol. 13 No. 1 (2023)

Abstract

Through a re-analysis of survey data collected with a sample of 9,731 youth aged 11–17 from 10 European countries, the article explores how some of the most popular online activities for children and young people (i.e., informational, social, and entertainment activities) relate to different types of perceived digital skills, as well as individual and social characteristics (such as age, gender, emotional problems, sensation seeking, parental mediation, and family environment). Furthermore, this paper looks at the moderating role of the family environment between enabling parental mediation and online activities. Using multi-group structural equation modeling we found that emotional problems, perceived informational and social digital skills, and enabling parental mediation were associated with informational online activities; sensation seeking, perceived informational digital skills, and enabling and restrictive parental mediation were associated with social online activities; and restrictive parental mediation was associated with entertainment online activities. Implications of these findings for educators, policy-makers, and parents are outlined, as well as limitations and future directions.

Abstract

This chapter explores the experiences of parents from a variety of cultural and linguistic backgrounds, specifically focusing on their use of digital technology as a means to support the development of the heritage language with their children. Based on both a quantitative and a qualitative study, the chapter explores family tensions linked to emotions as part of heritage language use, and the internal struggle parents face when it comes to their ideological assumptions on use and over-use of technology, versus the motivational pull they know technology has for their children. As well as focusing on data from the study, the chapter critically engages with the literature around digital technology for language learning and explores the special “niche” heritage language families occupy in this context. Abstract

Hand osteoarthritis (OA) is a common and potentially disabling disease, with different features from hip and knee OA so that a specific therapeutic approach is required. Evidence based recommendations for the management of hand OA were developed by the European League Against Rheumatism (EULAR) in 2006. The Italian Society for Rheumatology (SIR) aimed to update, adapt to national contest and disseminate the EULAR recommendations for the management of hand OA. The multidisciplinary group of experts included specialists involved in the management of patients with hand OA. In order to maintain consistency with EULAR recommendations, a similar methodology was utilized by the Italian group. The original propositions were reformulated in terms of a search query and for every recommendation a systematic search was conducted updating EULAR recommendations’ review. The propositions were translated in Italian and reformulated basing on collected evidences and expert opinion. The strength of recommendation was measured for each proposition with the EULAR ordinal and visual analogue scales. The original 11 propositions of EULAR recommendations were translated and adapted to Italian context. Further evidences were collected about non-pharmacological therapies, local treatments, intra-articular injection with SYSADOA and corticosteroids, and surgery. The SIR has developed updated recommendations for the management of hand OA adapted to the Italian healthcare system. Their implementation in clinical practice is expected to improve the management of patients with hand OA.

Abstract

This dataset provides longitudinal survey data from a European project, ySKILLS, which was focused on the role of digital skills in youths' development. It contains data from 10,821 participants from Grades 6-10 (in Wave 1) in Estonia, Finland, Germany, Italy, Poland, and Portugal. The data was collected between Spring 2021 and Spring 2023, the participants were recruited through schools, where the data collection also took place, except for online data collections due to restrictions caused by COVID-19. The dataset is novel in its multidimensional approach to the construct of digital literacy. It provides insight into the development of digital skills in youth and the role of digital skills and internet usage in youths' positive and negative online experiences and wellbeing. It also contains data that allows for the analysis of the role of digital skills in class networks. The data are beneficial for researchers interested in the examination of youths' online skills, internet usage, online experiences, and wellbeing from a longitudinal perspective., (© 2024 The Authors.)

89. Coronary Revascularization after Transcatheter and Surgical Aortic Valve Replacement.

Abstract

Introduction: Due to the selective criteria and short-term follow-up of previous transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) trials, the coronary revascularization incidence after TAVI has been difficult to determine. This study investigated the epidemiology of coronary revascularization after surgical aortic valve replacement (SAVR) and TAVI in patients with severe aortic valve stenosis (AS), with and without coronary artery disease (CAD), in a mid-term follow-up, single-center, real-world setting., Methods: Between 2010 to 2020, 1486 patients with AS underwent SAVR or TAVI with balloon-expandable Edwards ® transcatheter heart valves (THVs). Using hospital discharge records, we could estimate for each patient resident in Emilia Romagna the rate of ischemic events treated with percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). A subgroup without CAD was also analyzed., Results: The 5-year overall survival was 78.2%. Freedom from PCI after AVR and TAVI at 5 years was 96.9% and 96.9%, respectively, with previous PCI as a predictor (HR 4.86, 95% CI 2.57-9.21 p < 0.001). The freedom from PCI curves were not significantly different., Conclusions: Notwithstanding the aged population, the revascularization incidence was only 2.4%, requiring further evaluation even in younger patients with longer follow-up. Despite the profile frame raise due to the evolution of Edwards ® balloon-expandable THVs, PCI or coronarography feasibility were not compromised in our population.

Abstract

Objectives: Adolescents who deal with more emotional problems have been found to seek escape online, and struggle with excessive internet use (EIU). Poor social relationships have been linked with emotional problems. The current study investigated positive family and school relationships as protective factors against emotional problems and a preference for online social interaction (POSI), both specified as mediators of the association of family and school relationships with EIU. Cross-cultural differences in the model were tested., Methods: A multi-group SEM was tested on representative samples of 4104 adolescents (M age  = 14.40 years, SD = 1.65, range 12-17, 50% female) from four European countries from Southern, Northern, Central, and Eastern Europe (Italy, Norway, Czech Republic, and Serbia, respectively)., Results: Results suggested consistent associations across countries. Positive family relationships and positive school relationships were associated with lower EIU, with 63-64% of the effect of family, and 91-93% of the effect of school relationships mediated by emotional problems and POSI., Conclusions: Positive family and school relationships protect adolescents against excessive internet usage, regardless of culture and indirectly-through emotional problems and POSI.

Abstract

In remote areas and in developing countries, where adequate health-care structures are few and sparse, Occupational Medicine contributes to guaranteeing workers' health. Companies like Saipem, involved in activities that are carried out in remote, inhospitable areas must ensure the safety and guarantee the health conditions of workers in relation to the risk factors connected with the job as well as with the environment in which it is performed. In such situations, Occupational Medicine addresses both the health aspects of the workplace and of the community, and is the pivot around which revolves the health-care support of workers employed abroad in the sense of protection and enhancement of health. The risks connected with work abroad are of three main types: 1) job-related risks; 2) risks connected with the environment; 3) risks related to the organization of work and the changes in the worker's daily life. The job-related risks are similar to those connected with analogous jobs performed elsewhere. The risks connected with the environment are related to adverse climatic conditions, extreme temperatures and unknown and often dangerous flora and fauna. The occupational physician is called upon to assess the suitability of workers for jobs that are based in remote areas. The main clinical conditions that can prevent issue of the Medical Fitness Certificate to workers for long-stay jobs abroad are discussed.

Abstract

The activity of ITF 296 against methacholine-induced myocardial ischemia was investigated in anesthetized rats in comparison with the organic nitrates nitroglycerin (NTG) and isosorbide dinitrate (ISDN), the K(+)-channel openers nicorandil and cromakalim, the Ca(2+)-channel blocker amlodipine, and the vasodilator dipyridamole. Given as i.v. boluses, ITF 296 (0.1-100 micrograms/kg) dose-dependently prevented methacholine-induced ST-segment elevation without affecting mean arterial blood pressure or heart rate to a significant extent. In this situation, ITF 296 was 10- to 30-fold more potent than the other coronary vasodilators tested. The protective effect of ITF 296 and ISDN against myocardial ischemia was also observed after oral administration, demonstrating good absorption and a limited first-pass metabolism of the two drugs. The anti-ischemic action of ITF 296 at 1 and 10 micrograms/kg/min was well maintained during 2 h of continuous i.v. infusion, whereas the effect of NTG and ISDN was attenuated or abolished by the end of the infusion. The new nitrate ester ITF 296 has a potent and long-lasting cardioprotective action in the anesthetized rat. The anti-ischemic effect displayed by this compound is probably mediated by an improvement of myocardial blood supply caused by pronounced coronary dilatation, whereas the contribution of systemic vasodilation is not important. Moreover, the maintenance of the anti-ischemic action during continuous i.v. infusion suggests a reduced "tolerance" development for ITF 296 compared with other nitrovasodilators.
