We present timing and spectral analysis of a sample of seven hard X-ray selected Cataclysmic Variable candidates based on simultaneous X-ray and optical observations collected with XMM-Newton , complemented with Swift/BAT and INTEGRAL/IBIS hard X-ray data and ground-based optical photometry. For six sources, X-ray pulsations are detected for the first time in the range $\rm \sim296-6098\,s$, identifying them as members of the magnetic class. Swift J0927.7-6945, Swift J0958.0-4208, Swift J1701.3-4304, Swift J2113.5+5422, and possibly PBC J0801.2-4625, are Intermediate Polars (IPs), while Swift J0706.8+0325 is a short (1.7 h) orbital period Polar, the 11$^{\rm th}$ hard X-ray selected identified so far. X-ray orbital modulation is also observed in Swift J0927.7-6945 (5.2 h) and Swift J2113.5+5422 (4.1 h). Swift J1701.3-4304 is discovered as the longest orbital period (12.8 h) deep eclipsing IP. The spectra of the magnetic systems reveal optically thin multi-temperature emission between 0.2 and 60 keV. Energy dependent spin pulses and the orbital modulation in Swift J0927.7-6945 and Swift J2113.5+5422 are due to intervening local high density absorbing material ($\rm N_H\sim10^{22-23}\,cm^{-2}$). In Swift J0958.0-4208 and Swift J1701.3-4304, a soft X-ray blackbody (kT$\sim$50 and $\sim$80 eV) is detected, adding them to the growing group of "soft" IPs. White dwarf masses are determined in the range $\rm \sim0.58-1.18\,M_{\odot}$, indicating massive accreting primaries in five of them. Most sources accrete at rates lower than the expected secular value for their orbital period. Formerly proposed as a long-period (9.4 h) novalike CV, Swift J0746.3-1608 shows peculiar spectrum and light curves suggesting either an atypical low-luminosity CV or a low mass X-ray binary., Comment: 23 pages, 7 tables, and 6 Figures. We obtained an optical spectrum of a star we identify as the optical counterpart of the M31 Chandra source CXO J004318.8+412016, because of prominent emission lines of the Balmer series, of neutral helium, and a He II line at 4686 Angstrom. The continuum energy distribution and the spectral characteristics demonstrate the presence of a red giant of K or earlier spectral type, so we concluded that the binary is likely to be a symbiotic system. CXO J004318.8+412016 has been observed in X-rays as a luminous supersoft source (SSS) since 1979, with effective temperature exceeding 40 eV and variable X-ray luminosity, oscillating between a few times 10(35) erg/s and a few times 10(37) erg/s. The optical, infrared and ultraviolet colors of the optical object are consistent with an an accretion disk around a compact object companion, which may either be a white dwarf, or a black hole, depending on the system parameters. If the origin of the luminous supersoft X-rays is the atmosphere of a white dwarf that is burning hydrogen in shell, it is as hot and luminous as post-thermonuclear flash novae, yet no major optical outburst has ever been observed, suggesting that the white dwarf is very massive (m>1.2 M(sol)) and it is accreting and burning at the high rate (mdot>10(-8)M(sol)/year) expected for type Ia supernovae progenitors. The resolution of linear system with positive integer variables is a basic yet difficult computational problem with many applications. We consider sparse uncorrelated random systems parametrised by the density $c$ and the ratio $\alpha=N/M$ between number of variables $N$ and number of constraints $M$. By means of ensemble calculations we show that the space of feasible solutions endows a Van-Der-Waals phase diagram in the plane ($c$, $\alpha$). We give numerical evidence that the associated computational problems become more difficult across the critical point and in particular in the coexistence region., Comment: 15 pages, 6 figures, comments are welcome

CONTEXT - Transient low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) often show outbursts lasting typically a few-weeks and characterized by a high X-ray luminosity ($L_{x} \approx 10^{36}-10^{38}$ erg/sec), while for most of the time they are found in X-ray quiescence ($L_X\approx10^{31} -10^{33}$ erg/sec). EXO 1745-248 is one of them. AIMS - The broad-band coverage, and the sensitivity of instrument on board of {\xmm} and {\igr}, offers the opportunity to characterize the hard X-ray spectrum during {\exo} outburst. METHODS - In this paper we report on quasi-simultaneous {\xmm} and {\igr} observations of the X-ray transient {\exo} located in the globular cluster Terzan 5, performed ten days after the beginning of the outburst (on 2015 March 16th) shown by the source between March and June 2015. The source was caught in a hard state, emitting a 0.8-100 keV luminosity of $\simeq10^{37}$~{\lumcgs}. RESULTS - The spectral continuum was dominated by thermal Comptonization of seed photons with temperature $kT_{in}\simeq1.3$ keV, by a cloud with moderate optical depth $\tau\simeq2$ and electron temperature $kT_e\simeq 40$ keV. A weaker soft thermal component at temperature $kT_{th}\simeq0.6$--0.7 keV and compatible with a fraction of the neutron star radius was also detected. A rich emission line spectrum was observed by the EPIC-pn on-board {\xmm}; features at energies compatible with K-$\alpha$ transitions of ionized sulfur, argon, calcium and iron were detected, with a broadness compatible with either thermal Compton broadening or Doppler broadening in the inner parts of an accretion disk truncated at $20\pm6$ gravitational radii from the neutron star. Strikingly, at least one narrow emission line ascribed to neutral or mildly ionized iron is needed to model the prominent emission complex detected between 5.5 and 7.5 keV. Context. The first Gaia Data Release contains the Tycho-Gaia Astrometric Solution (TGAS). This is a subset of about 2 million stars for which, besides the position and photometry, the proper motion and parallax are calculated using Hipparcos and Tycho-2 positions in 1991.25 as prior information. Aims. We investigate the scientific potential and limitations of the TGAS component by means of the astrometric data for open clusters. Methods. Mean cluster parallax and proper motion values are derived taking into account the error correlations within the astrometric solutions for individual stars, an estimate of the internal velocity dispersion in the cluster, and, where relevant, the effects of the depth of the cluster along the line of sight. Internal consistency of the TGAS data is assessed. Results. Values given for standard uncertainties are still inaccurate and may lead to unrealistic unit-weight standard deviations of least squares solutions for cluster parameters. Reconstructed mean cluster parallax and proper motion values are generally in very good agreement with earlier Hipparcos-based determination, although the Gaia mean parallax for the Pleiades is a significant exception. We have no current explanation for that discrepancy. Most clusters are observed to extend to nearly 15 pc from the cluster centre, and it will be up to future Gaia releases to establish whether those potential cluster-member stars are still dynamically bound to the clusters. Conclusions. The Gaia DR1 provides the means to examine open clusters far beyond their more easily visible cores, and can provide membership assessments based on proper motions and parallaxes. In an XMM-Newton observation of the binary SDSS J121209.31+013627.7, consisting of a white dwarf and an L dwarf, we detect X-ray orbital modulation as proof of accretion from the substellar companion onto the magnetic white dwarf. We constrain the system geometry (inclination as well as magnetic and pole-cap angle) through modelling of the X-ray light curve, and we derive a mass accretion rate of 3.2 10^(-14) M_sun/yr from the X-ray luminosity (~ 3 10^(29) erg/s). From X-ray studies of L dwarfs, a possible wind driven from a hypothesized corona on the substellar donor is orders of magnitude too weak to explain the observed accretion rate, while the radius of the L dwarf is comparable to its Roche lobe (0.1 R_sun), making Roche-lobe overflow the likely accretion mechanism in this system., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A Letters

We present HST spectroscopy for 45 cataclysmic variables (CVs), observed with HST/COS and HST/STIS. For 36 CVs, the white dwarf is recognisable through its broad Ly$\alpha$ absorption profile and we measure the white dwarf effective temperatures ($T_{\mathrm{eff}}$) by fitting the HST data assuming $\log\,g=8.35$, which corresponds to the average mass for CV white dwarfs ($\simeq\,0.8\,\mathrm{M}_\odot$). Our results nearly double the number of CV white dwarfs with an accurate temperature measurement. We find that CVs above the period gap have, on average, higher temperatures ($\langle T_{\mathrm{eff}} \rangle \simeq 23\,000\,$K) and exhibit much more scatter compared to those below the gap ($\langle T_{\mathrm{eff}} \rangle \simeq 15\,000\,$K). While this behaviour broadly agrees with theoretical predictions, some discrepancies are present: (i) all our new measurements above the gap are characterised by lower temperatures ($T_{\mathrm{eff}} \simeq 16\,000 - 26\,000\,$K) than predicted by the present day CV population models ($T_{\mathrm{eff}} \simeq 38\,000 - 43\,000\,$K); (ii) our results below the gap are not clustered in the predicted narrow track and exhibit in particular a relatively large spread near the period minimum, which may point to some shortcomings in the CV evolutionary models. Finally, in the standard model of CV evolution, reaching the minimum period, CVs are expected to evolve back towards longer periods with mean accretion rates $\dot{M}\lesssim 2 \times 10^{-11}\,\mathrm{M}_\odot\,\mathrm{yr}^{-1}$, corresponding to $T_\mathrm{eff}\lesssim 11\,500\,$K. We do not unambiguously identify any such system in our survey, suggesting that this major component of the predicted CV population still remains elusive to observations., Comment: 26 pages, 21 figures. In search for the counterpart to the Fermi-LAT source 3FGL J0838.8-2829, we performed a multi-wavelength campaign, in the X-ray band with Swift and XMM-Newton, performed infrared, optical (with OAGH, ESO-NTT and IAC80) and radio (ATCA) observations, as well as analysed archival hard X-ray data taken by INTEGRAL. We report on three X-ray sources consistent with the position of the Fermi-LAT source. We confirm the identification of the brightest object, RX J0838-2827, as a magnetic cataclysmic variable, that we recognize as an asynchronous system (not associated with the Fermi-LAT source). RX J0838-2827, is extremely variable in the X-ray and optical bands, and timing analysis reveals the presence of several periodicities modulating its X-ray and optical emission. The most evident modulations are interpreted as due to the binary system orbital period of ~1.64h and the white dwarf spin period of ~1.47h. A strong flux modulation at ~15h is observed at all energy bands, consistent with the beat frequency between spin and orbital periods. Optical spectra show prominent Hbeta, HeI and HeII emission lines Doppler-modulated at the orbital period and at the beat period. Therefore, RX J0838-2827, accretes through a diskless configuration and could be either a strongly asynchronous polar or a rare example of a pre-polar system in its way to reach synchronism. Among the other two X-ray sources, XMM J083850.4-282759 showed a variable X-ray emission, with a powerful flare lasting ~600s, similar to what is observed in transitional millisecond pulsars during the sub-luminous disc state: that would possibly associate this source with the Fermi-LAT source., Comment: 19 pages, 14 figures. eXTP is a science mission designed to study the state of matter under extreme conditions of density, gravity and magnetism. Primary targets include isolated and binary neutron stars, strong magnetic field systems like magnetars, and stellar-mass and supermassive black holes. The mission carries a unique and unprecedented suite of state-of-the-art scientific instruments enabling for the first time ever the simultaneous spectral-timing-polarimetry studies of cosmic sources in the energy range from 0.5-30 keV (and beyond). Key elements of the payload are: the Spectroscopic Focusing Array (SFA) - a set of 11 X-ray optics for a total effective area of about 0.9 m^2 and 0.6 m^2 at 2 keV and 6 keV respectively, equipped with Silicon Drift Detectors offering <180 eV spectral resolution; the Large Area Detector (LAD) - a deployable set of 640 Silicon Drift Detectors, for a total effective area of about 3.4 m^2, between 6 and 10 keV, and spectral resolution <250 eV; the Polarimetry Focusing Array (PFA) - a set of 2 X-ray telescope, for a total effective area of 250 cm^2 at 2 keV, equipped with imaging gas pixel photoelectric polarimeters; the Wide Field Monitor (WFM) - a set of 3 coded mask wide field units, equipped with position-sensitive Silicon Drift Detectors, each covering a 90 degrees x 90 degrees FoV. The eXTP international consortium includes mostly major institutions of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Universities in China, as well as major institutions in several European countries and the United States. The predecessor of eXTP, the XTP mission concept, has been selected and funded as one of the so-called background missions in the Strategic Priority Space Science Program of the Chinese Academy of Sciences since 2011. Non-radial pulsations have been identified in a number of accreting white dwarfs in cataclysmic variables. These stars offer insight into the excitation of pulsation modes in atmospheres with mixed compositions of hydrogen, helium, and metals, and the response of these modes to changes in the white dwarf temperature. Among all pulsating cataclysmic variable white dwarfs, GW Librae stands out by having a well-established observational record of three independent pulsation modes that disappeared when the white dwarf temperature rose dramatically following its 2007 accretion outburst. Our analysis of HST ultraviolet spectroscopy taken in 2002, 2010 and 2011, showed that pulsations produce variations in the white dwarf effective temperature as predicted by theory. Additionally in May~2013, we obtained new HST/COS ultraviolet observations that displayed unexpected behaviour: besides showing variability at ~275s, which is close to the post-outburst pulsations detected with HST in 2010 and 2011, the white dwarf exhibits high-amplitude variability on a ~4.4h time-scale. We demonstrate that this variability is produced by an increase of the temperature of a region on white dwarf covering up to ~30 per cent of the visible white dwarf surface. We argue against a short-lived accretion episode as the explanation of such heating, and discuss this event in the context of non-radial pulsations on a rapidly rotating star, Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures, 2 tables, accpted in MNRAS

IGR J04571+4527 and Swift J0525.6+2416 are two hard X-ray sources detected in the Swift/BAT and INTEGRAL/IBIS surveys. They were proposed to be magnetic cataclysmic variables of the Intermediate Polar (IP) type, based on optical spectroscopy. IGR J04571+4527 also showed a 1218 s optical periodicity, suggestive of the rotational period of a white dwarf, further pointing towards an IP classification. We here present detailed X-ray (0.3-10 keV) timing and spectral analysis performed with XMM-Newton, complemented with hard X-ray coverage (15-70 keV) from Swift/BAT. These are the first high signal to noise observations in the soft X-ray domain for both sources, allowing us to identify the white dwarf X-ray spin period of Swift J0525.6+2416 (226.28 s), and IGR J04571+4527 (1222.6 s). A model consisting of multi-temperature optically thin emission with complex absorption adequately fits the broad-band spectrum of both sources. We estimate a white dwarf mass of about 1.1 and 1.0 solar masses for IGR J04571+4527 and Swift J0525.6+2416, respectively. The above characteristics allow us to unambiguously classify both sources as IPs, confirming the high incidence of this subclass among hard X-ray emitting Cataclysmic Variables., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, 3 tables. We report on the discovery of a new X-ray pulsator, Swift J201424.9+152930 (Sw J2014). Owing to its X-ray modulation at 491 s, it was discovered in a systematic search for coherent signals in the archival data of the Swift X-ray Telescope. To investigate the nature of Sw J2014, we performed multi-wavelength follow-up observations with space-borne (Swift and XMM-Newton) and ground-based (the 1.5-m Loiano Telescope and the 3.6-m Telescopio Nazionale Galileo) instruments. The X-ray spectrum of Sw J2014 can be described by a hard and highly absorbed power law. The optical observations made it possible to single out the optical counterpart to this source, which displays several variable emission lines and total eclipses lasting ~20 min. Total eclipses of similar length were observed also in X-rays. The study of the eclipses, allowed us to infer a second periodicity of 3.44 h, which we interpret as the orbital period of a close binary system. We also found that the period has not significantly changed over a ~7 yr timespan. Based on the timing signatures of Sw J2014, and its optical and X-ray spectral properties, we suggest that it is a close binary hosting an accreting magnetic white dwarf. We present the first detection of X-ray coherent pulsations from the transitional millisecond pulsar XSS J12270-4859, while it was in a sub-luminous accretion disk state characterized by a 0.5-10 keV luminosity of 5E33 erg/s (assuming a distance of 1.4 kpc). Pulsations were observed by XMM-Newton at an rms amplitude of (7.7 +/- 0.5)% with a second harmonic stronger than the the fundamental frequency, and were detected when the source is neither flaring nor dipping. The most likely interpretation of this detection is that matter from the accretion disk was channelled by the neutron star magnetosphere and accreted onto its polar caps. According to standard disk accretion theory, for pulsations to be observed the mass in-flow rate in the disk was likely larger than the amount of plasma actually reaching the neutron star surface; an outflow launched by the fast rotating magnetosphere then probably took place, in agreement with the observed broad-band spectral energy distribution. The Large Observatory For x-ray Timing (LOFT) was studied within ESA M3 Cosmic Vision framework and participated in the final down-selection for a launch slot in 2022-2024. Thanks to the unprecedented combination of effective area and spectral resolution of its main instrument, LOFT will study the behaviour of matter under extreme conditions, such as the strong gravitational field in the innermost regions of accretion flows close to black holes and neutron stars, and the supra-nuclear densities in the interior of neutron stars. The science payload is based on a Large Area Detector (LAD, 10 m 2 effective area, 2-30 keV, 240 eV spectral resolution, 1 deg collimated field of view) and a WideField Monitor (WFM, 2-50 keV, 4 steradian field of view, 1 arcmin source location accuracy, 300 eV spectral resolution). The WFM is equipped with an on-board system for bright events (e.g. GRB) localization. The trigger time and position of these events are broadcast to the ground within 30 s from discovery. The peculiar low mass X-ray binary XSSJ12270-4859, associated with the Fermi/LAT source 2FGLJ1227.7-4853, was in a X-ray, gamma-ray and optical low-luminosity persistent state for about a decade until the end of 2012, when it has entered into the dimmest state ever observed. The nature of the compact object has been controversial until the detection of a 1.69ms radio pulsar early 2014. We present optical spectroscopy and optical/near-IR photometry during the previous brighter and in the recent faint states. We determine the first spectroscopic orbital ephemeris and an accurate orbital period of 6.91246(5)h. We infer a mid G-type donor star and a distance d=1.8-2.0kpc. The donor spectral type changes from G5V to F5V between inferior and superior conjunction, a signature of strong irradiation effects. We infer a binary inclination 45deg <~ i <~ 65deg and a highly undermassive donor, M_2 ~ 0.06-0.12M_sun for a neutron star mass in the range 1.4-3M_sun. Thus this binary joins as the seventh member the group of "redbacks". In the high state, the emission lines reveal the presence of an accretion disc. They tend to vanish at the donor star superior conjunction, where also flares are preferentially observed together with the occurrence of random dips. This behaviour could be related to the propeller mechanism of the neutron star recently proposed to be acting in this system during the high state. In the low state, the emission lines are absent at all orbital phases indicating that accretion has completely switched-off and that XSSJ12270-4859 has transited from an accretion-powered to a rotation-powered phase., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures, 3 tables accepted for publication in Monthly Notices Royal Astronomical Society, Main Journal

STREGA (STRucture and Evolution of the GAlaxy) is a Guaranteed Time survey being performed at the VST (the ESO VLT Survey Telescope) to map about 150 square degrees in the Galactic halo, in order to constrain the mechanisms of galactic formation and evolution. The survey is built as a five-year project, organized in two parts: a core program to explore the surrounding regions of selected stellar systems and a second complementary part to map the southern portion of the Fornax orbit and extend the observations of the core program. The adopted stellar tracers are mainly variable stars (RR~Lyraes and Long Period Variables) and Main Sequence Turn-off stars for which observations in the g,r,i bands are obtained. We present an overview of the survey and some preliminary results for three observing runs that have been completed. For the region centered on $\omega$~Cen (37 deg^2), covering about three tidal radii, we also discuss the detected stellar density radial profile and angular distribution, leading to the identification of extratidal cluster stars. We also conclude that the cluster tidal radius is about 1.2 deg, in agreement with values in the literature based on the Wilson model., Comment: Accepted for publication on MNRAS on 2014 August 18

The uniform sampling of convex regions in high dimension is an important computational issue, from both theoretical and applied point of view. The hit-and-run montecarlo algorithms are the most efficient methods known to perform it and one of their bottlenecks relies in the difficulty of escaping from tight corners in high dimension. Inspired by optimized montecarlo methods used in statistical mechanics we define a new algorithm by overelaxing the hit-and-run dynamics. We made numerical simulations on high dimensional simplices in order to test its performances, pointing out its improved ability to escape from angles and finally apply it to an inference problem in the steady state dynamics of metabolic networks.

The stoichiometry of metabolic networks usually gives rise to a family of conservation laws for the aggregate concentration of specific pools of metabolites, which not only constrain the dynamics of the network, but also provide key insight into a cell's production capabilities. When the conserved quantity identifies with a chemical moiety, extracting all such conservation laws from the stoichiometry amounts to finding all integer solutions to an NP-hard programming problem. Here we propose a novel and efficient computational strategy that combines Monte Carlo, message passing, and relaxation algorithms to compute the complete set of irreducible integer conservation laws of a given stoichiometric matrix, also providing a certificate for correctness and maximality of the solution. The method is deployed for the analysis of the complete set of irreducible integer pools of two large-scale reconstructions of the metabolism of the bacterium Escherichia coli in different growth media. In addition, we uncover a scaling relation that links the size of the irreducible pool basis to the number of metabolites, for which we present an analytical explanation., Comment: 10 pages, 4 tables, one figure

The INTEGRAL and Swift hard X-ray surveys have identified a large number of new sources, among which many are proposed as Cataclysmic Variables (CVs). Here we present the first detailed study of three X-ray selected CVs, Swift J1907.3-2050, IGRJ12123-5802, and IGRJ19552+0044 based on XMM-Newton, Suzaku, Swift observations and ground based optical and archival nIR/IR data. Swift J1907.3-2050 is highly variable from hours to months-years at all wavelengths. No coherent X-ray pulses are detected but rather transient features. The X-ray spectrum reveals a multi-temperature optically thin plasma absorbed by complex neutral material and a soft black body component arising from a small area. These characteristics are remarkably similar to those observed in magnetic CVs. A supra-solar abundance of nitrogen could arise from nuclear processed material from the donor star. Swift J1907.3-2050 could be a peculiar magnetic CV with the second longest (20.82 h) binary period. IGRJ12123-5802 is variable in the X-rays on a timescale of ~7.6 h. No coherent pulsations are detected, but its spectral characteristics suggest that it could be a magnetic CV of the Intermediate Polar (IP) type. IGRJ19552+0044 shows two X-ray periods, 1.38 h and 1.69 h and a X-ray spectrum characterized by a multi-temperature plasma with little absorption.We derive a low accretion rate, consistent with a CV below the orbital period gap. Its peculiar nIR/IR spectrum suggests a contribution from cyclotron emission. XSSJ1227.0-4859 is a peculiar, hard X-ray source recently positionally associated to the Fermi-LAT source 1FGLJ1227.9-4852/2FGLJ1227.7-4853. Multi-wavelength observations have added information on this source, indicating a low-luminosity low-mass X-ray binary (LMXB), but its nature is still unclear. To progress in our understanding, we present new X-ray data from a monitoring campaign performed in 2011 with the XMM-Newton, RXTE, and Swift satellites and combine them with new gamma-ray data from the Fermi and AGILE satellites. We complement the study with simultaneous near-UV photometry from XMM-Newton and with previous UV/optical and near-IR data. The X-ray history of XSSJ1227.0-4859 over 7yr shows a persistent and rather stable low-luminosity (~6x10^33 d_{1\,kpc}^2 erg/s) source, with flares and dips being peculiar and permanent characteristics. The associated Fermi-LAT source 2FGLJ1227.7-4853 is also stable over an overlapping period of 4.7\,yr. Searches for X-ray fast pulsations down to msec give upper limits to pulse fractional amplitudes of 15-25% that do not rule out a fast spinning pulsar. The combined UV/optical/near-IR spectrum reveals a hot component at ~13\,kK and a cool one at ~4.6\,kK. The latter would suggest a late-type K2-K5 companion star, a distance range of1.4--3.6kpc and an orbital period of 7--9 h. A near-UV variability (>6\,h) also suggests a longer orbital period than previously estimated. The analysis shows that the X-ray and UV/optical/near-IR emissions are more compatible with an accretion-powered compact object than with a rotational powered pulsar. The X-ray to UV bolometric luminosity ratio could be consistent with a binary hosting a neutron star, but the uncertainties in the radio data may also allow an LMXB black hole with a compact jet. The LOFT mission concept is one of four candidates selected by ESA for the M3 launch opportunity as Medium Size missions of the Cosmic Vision programme. The launch window is currently planned for between 2022 and 2024. LOFT is designed to exploit the diagnostics of rapid X-ray flux and spectral variability that directly probe the motion of matter down to distances very close to black holes and neutron stars, as well as the physical state of ultra-dense matter. These primary science goals will be addressed by a payload composed of a Large Area Detector (LAD) and a Wide Field Monitor (WFM). The LAD is a collimated (<1 degree field of view) experiment operating in the energy range 2-50 keV, with a 10 m^2 peak effective area and an energy resolution of 260 eV at 6 keV. The WFM will operate in the same energy range as the LAD, enabling simultaneous monitoring of a few-steradian wide field of view, with an angular resolution of <5 arcmin. The LAD and WFM experiments will allow us to investigate variability from submillisecond QPO's to year-long transient outbursts. We aim at characterizing a sample of 9 new hard X-ray selected Cataclysmic Variable (CVs), to unambiguously identify them as magnetic systems of the Intermediate Polar (IP) type. We performed timing and spectral analysis by using X-ray, and simultaneous UV and optical data collected by XMM-Newton, complemented with hard X-ray data provided by INTEGRAL and Swift. The pulse arrival time were used to estimate the orbital periods. The X-ray spectra were fitted using composite models consisting of different absorbing columns and emission components. Strong X-ray pulses at the White Dwarf (WD) spin period are detected and found to decrease with energy. Most sources are spin-dominated systems in the X-rays, though four are beat dominated at optical wavelengths. We estimated the orbital period in all system (except for IGR J16500-3307), providing the first estimate for IGR J08390-4833, IGR J18308-1232, and IGR J18173-2509. All X-ray spectra are multi-temperature. V2069 Cyg and RX J0636+3535 posses a soft X-ray optically thick component at kT 80 eV. An intense K_alpha Fe line at 6.4 keV is detected in all sources. An absorption edge at 0.76 keV from OVII is detected in IGR J08390-4833. The WD masses and lower limits to the accretion rates are estimated. We found all sources to be IPs. IGR J08390-4833, V2069 Cyg, and IGR J16500-3307 are pure disc accretors, while IGR J18308-1232, IGR J1509-6649, IGR J17195-4100, and RX J0636+3535 display a disc-overflow accretion mode. All sources show a temperature gradient in the post-shock regions and a highly absorbed emission from material located in the pre-shock flow which is also responsible for the X-ray pulsations. Reflection at the WD surface is likely the origin of the fluorescent iron line. There is an increasing evidence for the presence of a warm absorber in IPs. We review the X-ray spectral properties of magnetic cataclysmic binaries derived from observations obtained during the last decade with the large X-ray observatories XMM-Newton, Chandra and Suzaku. We focus on the signatures of the different accretion modes which are predicted according to the values of the main physical parameters (magnetic field, local accretion rate and white dwarf mass). The X-ray source XSS J12270-4859 has been first suggested to be a magnetic cataclysmic variable of Intermediate Polar type on the basis of its optical spectrum and a possible 860 s X-ray periodicity. However further X-ray observations by the Suzaku and XMM-Newton satellites did not confirm this periodicity but show a very peculiar variability, including moderate repetitive flares and numerous absorption dips. These characteristics together with a suspected 4.3 h orbital period would suggest a possible link with the so- called "dipping sources", a sub-class of Low-Mass X-ray Binaries (LMXB). Based on the released FERMI catalogues, the source was also found coincident with a very high energy (0.1-300 GeV) VHE source 2FGL J1227.7-4853. The good positional coincidence, together with the lack of any other bright X-ray sources in the field, makes this identification highly probable. However, none of the other standard LMXBs have been so far detected by FERMI. Most galactic VHE sources are associated with rotation-powered pulsars. We present here new results obtained from a 30 ksec high-time resolution XMM observations in January 2011 that confirm the flaring-dipping behaviour and provide upper limits on fast X-ray pulsations. Inverse phase transitions are striking phenomena in which an apparently more ordered state disorders under cooling. This behavior can naturally emerge in tricritical systems on heterogeneous networks and it is strongly enhanced by the presence of disassortative degree correlations. We show it both analytically and numerically, providing also a microscopic interpretation of inverse transitions in terms of freezing of sparse subgraphs and coupling renormalization., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

The high time resolution observations of the X-ray sky hold the key to a number of diagnostics of fundamental physics, some of which are unaccessible to other types of investigations, such as those based on imaging and spectroscopy. Revealing strong gravitational field effects, measuring the mass and spin of black holes and the equation of state of ultradense matter are among the goals of such observations. At present prospects for future, non-focused X-ray timing experiments following the exciting age of RXTE/PCA are uncertain. Technological limitations are unavoidably faced in the conception and development of experiments with effective area of several square meters, as needed in order to meet the scientific requirements. We are developing large-area monolithic Silicon Drift Detectors offering high time and energy resolution at room temperature, which require modest resources and operation complexity (e.g., read-out) per unit area. Based on the properties of the detector and read-out electronics that we measured in the lab, we developed a realistic concept for a very large effective area mission devoted to X-ray timing in the 2-30 keV energy range. Recently, wavelets and R/S analysis have been used as statistical tools to characterize the optical flickering of cataclysmic variables. Here we present the first comprehensive study of the statistical properties of X-ray flickering of cataclysmic variables in order to link them with physical parameters. We analyzed a sample of 97 X-ray light curves of 75 objects of all classes observed with the XMM-Newton space telescope. By using the wavelets analysis, each light curve has been characterized by two parameters, alpha and Sigma, that describe the energy distribution of flickering on different timescales and the strength at a given timescale, respectively. We also used the R/S analysis to determine the Hurst exponent of each light curve and define their degree of stochastic memory in time. The X-ray flickering is typically composed of long time scale events (1.5 < alpha < 3), with very similar strengths in all the subtypes of cataclysmic variables (-3 < Sigma < -1.5). The X-ray data are distributed in a much smaller area of the alpha-Sigma parameter space with respect to those obtained with optical light curves. The tendency of the optical flickering in magnetic systems to show higher Sigma values than the non-magnetic systems is not encountered in the X-rays. The Hurst exponents estimated for all light curves of the sample are larger than those found in the visible, with a peak at 0.82. In particular, we do not obtain values lower than 0.5. The X-ray flickering presents a persistent memory in time, which seems to be stronger in objects containing magnetic white dwarf primaries. The similarity of the X-ray flickering in objects of different classes together with the predominance of a persistent stochastic behavior can be explained it terms of magnetically-driven accretion processes acting in a considerable fraction of the analyzed objects., Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures, 2 tables. The nature of the hard X-ray source XSSJ12270-4859 is still unclear though it was claimed to be a magnetic Cataclysmic Variable. We here present a broad-band X-ray and gamma ray study based on a recent XMM-Newton observation and archival INTEGRAL and RXTE data. From the Fermi/LAT 1-year point source catalogue, we tentatively associate XSSJ12270-4859 with 1FGLJ1227.9-4852, a source of high energy gamma rays with emission up to 10GeV. We complement the study with UV photometry from XMM-Newton and ground-based optical and near-IR photometry. The X-ray emission is highly variable showing flares and intensity dips. The X-ray flares consist of flare-dip pairs. Flares are also detected in the UV range but not the dips. Aperiodic dipping behaviour is also observed during X-ray quiescence but not in the UV. The 0.2-100keV spectrum is featureless and described by a power law model with Gamma=1.7. The 100MeV-10GeV spectrum is instead represented by a power law index of 2.45. The luminosity ratio between 0.1-100GeV and 0.2--100keV is ~0.8, hence the GeV emission is a significant component of the total energy output. Furthermore, the X-ray spectrum does not greatly change during flares, quiescence and the dips seen in quiescence but it hardens during the post-flare dips. Optical photometry reveals a period of 4.32hr likely related to the binary orbit. Near-IR, possibly ellipsoidal, variations are detected. Large amplitude variability on shorter (tens mins) timescales are found to be non-periodic. The observed variability at all wavelengths and the spectral characteristics strongly favour a low-mass atypical low-luminosity X-ray binary and are against a Cataclysmic Variable nature. We discuss the properties of 137 cataclysmic variables (CVs) which are included in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) spectroscopic data base, and for which accurate orbital periods have been measured. 92 of these systems are new discoveries from SDSS and were followed-up in more detail over the past few years. 45 systems were previously identified as CVs because of the detection of optical outbursts and/or X-ray emission, and subsequently re-identified from the SDSS spectroscopy. The period distribution of the SDSS CVs differs dramatically from that of all the previously known CVs, in particular it contains a significant accumulation of systems in the orbital period range 80--86 min. We identify this feature as the elusive "period minimum spike" predicted by CV population models, which resolves a long-standing discrepancy between compact binary evolution theory and observations. We show that this spike is almost entirely due to the large number of CVs with very low accretion activity identified by SDSS. The optical spectra of these systems are dominated by emission from the white dwarf photosphere, and display little or no spectroscopic signature from the donor stars, suggesting very low-mass companion stars. We determine the average absolute magnitude of these low-luminosity CVs at the period minimum to be =11.6+-0.7. Comparison of the SDSS CV sample to the CVs found in the Hamburg Quasar Survey and the Palomar Green Survey suggests that the depth of SDSS is the key ingredient resulting in the discovery of a large number of intrinsically faint short-period systems., Comment: MNRAS in press, 19 pages

A significant number of cataclysmic variables were detected as hard X-ray sources in the INTEGRAL survey, most of them of the magnetic intermediate polar type. We present a detailed X-ray broad-band study of two new sources, IGR J00234+6141 and 1RXS J213344.1+510725, that allow us to classify them as secure members of the intermediate polar class. Timing and spectral analysis of IGR J00234+6141 are based on a XMM-Newton observation and INTEGRAL publicly available data. For 1RXS J213344.1+510725 we use XMM-Newton and Suzaku observations at different epochs, as well as INTEGRAL publicly available data. We determine a spin period of 561.64 +/- 0.56 s for the white dwarf in IGR J00234+6141. The X-ray pulses are observed up to about 2 keV. From XMM-Newton and Suzaku observations of 1RXS J213344.1+510725, we find a rotational period of 570.862 +/- 0.034 s. The observations span three epochs where the pulsation is observed to change at different energies both in amplitude and shape. In both objects, the spectral analysis spanned over a wide energy range, from 0.3 to 100 keV, shows the presence of multiple emission components absorbed by dense material. The X-ray spectrum of IGR J00234+6141 is consistent with a multi-temperature plasma with a maximum temperature of about 50 keV. In 1RXS J213344.1+510725, multiple optically thin components are inferred, as well as an optically thick (blackbody) soft X-ray emission with a temperature of about 100 eV. While the exceptional sensitivity of Chandra and XMM-Newton has resulted in revolutionary studies of the Galactic neighborhood in the soft (<10 keV) X-ray band, there are many open questions. We characterize the flickering observed in the optical lightcurve of the Intermediate Polar system V709 Cas by determining its position in the alpha-Sigma as in the Fritz and Bruch (1998) classification scheme. Sigma represents the strength of flickering at a given timescale, while alpha describes the energy distribution of the flickering at different time scales. Here alpha is independently obtained with both the wavelets and the Hurst R/S analysis. The flickering shows self-similarity in the time scale ranging from tens of minutes down to 10 seconds with stochastic persistent memory in time. alpha and Sigma appear anticorrelated. In the alpha-Sigma diagram V709 Cas falls in the region of magnetic systems. Since V709 Cas shows the spin period of the magnetic WD only in the X-ray but not in the optical, we conclude that this method can be used to characterize CV subtypes especially when their classification is uncertain., Comment: 6 figures
