Abstract

This thesis is comprised of three essays relating to long term unemployment in Spain. The first chapter is methodological analysis of the main dataset that is used throughout the thesis. The second and third chapter provide two applications of the dataset for the study of long term unemployment. The methodology in these chapters can be easily adapted to study unemployment in other countries. Chapter 1. On the use of administrative data for the study of unemployment Social security administrative data are increasingly becoming available in many countries. These are very attractive data as they have a long panel structure (large N, large T) and allow to measure many different variables with higher precision. Because of their nature they can capture aspects that are usually hidden due to design or timing of survey data. However, administrative data are not ready to be used for labour market research, especially studies involving unemployment. The main reason is that administrative data only capture those registered unemployed, and in some cases only those receiving unemployment benefits. The gap between total unemployment and registered unemployment is not constant neither across workers characteristics nor time. In this paper I augment Spanish Social Security administrative data by adding missing unemployment spells using information from the institutional framework. I compare the resulting unemployment rate to that of the Labour Force Survey, showing that both are comparable and thus the administrative dataset is useful for labour market research. I also explore how the administrative data can be used to study some important aspects of the labour market that the Labour Force survey can’t capture. Administrative data can also be used to overcome some of the problems of the Labour Force survey such as changes in the structure of the survey. This paper aims to provide a comprehensive guide on how to adapt administrative datasets to make them useful for studying unemployment. Chapter 2. Unemployment Duration Variance Decomposition `a la ABS: Evidence from Spain Existing studies of unemployment duration typically use self-reported information from labour force surveys. We revisit this question using precise information on spells from administrative data. We follow the recent method proposed by Alvarez, Borovickova and Shimer (2015) for estimating the different components of the duration of unemployment using administrative data and have applied it to Austria. In this paper we apply the same method (the ABS method hereafter) to Spain using Spanish Social Security data. Administrative data have many advantages compared to Labour Force Survey data, but we note that there are some incompleteness that need to be enhanced in order to use the data for unemployment analysis (e.g., unemployed workers that run out of unemployment insurance have no labour market status in the data). The degree and nature of such incompleteness is country-specific and are particularly important in Spain. Following Chapter 1, we deal with these data issues in a systematic way by using information from the Spanish LFS data as well as institutional information. We hope that our approach will provide a useful way to apply the ABS method in other countries. Our findings are: (i) the unemployment decomposition is quite similar in Austria and Spain, specially when minimizing the effect of fixed-term contracts in Spain. (ii) the constant component is the most important one; while (total) heterogeneity and duration dependence are roughly comparable. (iii) also, we do not find big differences in the contribution of the different components along the business cycle. Chapter 3. Search Capital and Unemployment Duration I propose a novel mechanism called search capital to explain long term unemployment patters across different ages: workers who have been successful in finding jobs in the recent past become more efficient at finding jobs in the present. Search ability increases with search experience and depreciates with tenure if workers do not search often enough. This leaves young (who have not gained enough search experience) and older workers in a disadvantaged position, making them more likely to suffer long term unemployment. I focus on the case of Spain, as its dual labour market structure favours the identification of search capital. I provide empirical evidence that search capital affects unemployment duration and wages at the individual level. Then I propose a search model with search capital and calibrate it using Spanish administrative data. The addition of search capital helps the model match the dynamics of unemployment and job finding rates in the data, especially for younger workers.

62. Unravelling Student Evaluations of Courses and Teachers

Abstract

There is debate over the functional basis of student evaluations of academics, and fresh potential for looking at the data in new ways. Student evaluation data was collated over a three year period (Semester 2 2015 to Semester 1 2018). We used a General Linear Model to estimate the variation in course scores explained by a number of coordinator and course attributes. Three significant factors collectively explain 49% of the School's variation in course scores--individual coordinator, student evaluation response rate, and mode of delivery. Next, we used hierarchical clustering to explore the inter-relationships among the eight course and teaching evaluation questions. Learning appears to be related to stimulation, whereas overall satisfaction appears to be related to quality of learning materials and course structure (i.e. aspects of course organisation). Student evaluation response rate is positively correlated to all eight course questions, but most positively to a question relating to receiving adequate feedback. This perhaps implies some reciprocity in the flow of information between student and coordinator. The overall teaching rating awarded to academics clusters most with approachability and encouragement of student input--aspects of temperament and style--and not with explanatory skill or organisational ability.

Abstract

Interspecies blastocyst complementation enables organ-specific enrichment of xenogenic pluripotent stem cell (PSC) derivatives. Here, we establish a versatile blastocyst complementation platform based on CRISPR-Cas9-mediated zygote genome editing and show enrichment of rat PSC-derivatives in several tissues of gene-edited organogenesis-disabled mice. Besides gaining insights into species evolution, embryogenesis, and human disease, interspecies blastocyst complementation might allow human organ generation in animals whose organ size, anatomy, and physiology are closer to humans. To date, however, whether human PSCs (hPSCs) can contribute to chimera formation in non-rodent species remains unknown. We systematically evaluate the chimeric competency of several types of hPSCs using a more diversified clade of mammals, the ungulates. We find that naïve hPSCs robustly engraft in both pig and cattle pre-implantation blastocysts but show limited contribution to post-implantation pig embryos. Instead, an intermediate hPSC type exhibits higher degree of chimerism and is able to generate differentiated progenies in post-implantation pig embryos.

Abstract

Aims: Lymph node metastases (LNM) are one of the most important prognostic indicators in solid tumours and a major component of cancer staging. Neoadjuvant therapy might influence nodal status by induction of regression. Our aim is to determine the prevalence and role of regression of LNM on outcomes in patients with rectal cancer. Methods and results: Four independent study populations of rectal cancer patients treated with similar regimens of chemoradiotherapy were pooled together to obtain a total cohort of 469 patients. Post-treatment nodal status (ypN) and signs of tumour regression (Reg) were incorporated to form three-tiered (ypN− Reg+, ypN− Reg− and ypN+) and four-tiered (ypN− Reg+, ypN− Reg−, ypN+ Reg+ and ypN+ Reg−) classifications. In our cohort, 31% of patients presented with ypN+ rectal cancer. As expected, we found significantly worse overall survival (OS) in ypN+ patients compared to ypN− patients (P = 0.002). The percentage of ypN− patients with lymph nodes with complete regression was 20% in our cohort. While node-negative patients with and without regression had similar OS (P = 0.09), disease-free survival (DFS) was significantly better in node-negative patients with regression (P = 0.009). Conclusions: Regression in lymph nodes is frequent, and node-negative patients with evidence of lymph node regression have better DFS compared to node-negative patients without such evidence.

84. In-State-Tuition for Unauthorized Residents: Teaching a Person to Fish

Abstract

Illegal immigration has become one of the most important issues we face as a nation, and as greater attention is focused on the sociological and economic impact of illegal immigration, policies related to in-state-tuition for unauthorized residents are in a state of flux. Since 2005, the number of states offering in-state-tuition for unauthorized residents has more than doubled. Using the rational from "Plyler v. Doe" and economic data from the Heritage Foundation and the Pew Research Institute, the authors argue for increased access to in-state-tuition for unauthorized residents. Increased access will improve economic productivity, reduce crime and reduce dependence on governmental services. If it is true that giving a person a fish means they will eat for today, but teaching a person to fish means they will eat for a lifetime, then why choose the former especially when their catch can feed others as well?

87. Switching related to inefficacy in biologics and targeted synthetic therapies for psoriatic arthritis: a comparative real-life study.

Abstract

Background: Switching between therapies is a recommended strategy for psoriatic arthritis (PsA) patients who experience treatment failure; however, studies including real-life data are scarce. Objectives: To assess the incidence rate (IR) of switching between biologics and targeted synthetic disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (b/tsDMARDs) due to inefficacy in PsA, and to compare the risk of switching due to inefficacy across different b/tsDMARDs groups. Design: A longitudinal retrospective study, spanning from 2007 to 2022, was conducted on patients with PsA treated with b/tsDMARDs at an outpatient rheumatology clinic. Methods: The primary outcome was switching between b/tsDMARDs due to inefficacy. The independent variable was the exposure to b/tsDMARDs during follow-up. As covariates, clinical, treatment-related, and sociodemographic variables were considered. Survival techniques were run to estimate the IR of switching due to inefficacy per 100 patients*year and confidence interval at 95% (95% CI). Cox multivariate regression analyses were run to assess the risk of b/tsDMARDs switching due to inefficacy, expressed as hazard ratio (HR) and 95% CI. Results: In all, 141 patients were included, with 893.09 patients*year follow-ups. 52.48% of them were females in their fifties. In total, 262 courses of treatment were recorded. During the study period, 56 patients presented 121 switches and 103 related to inefficacy (IR: 11.53 (9.51–13.98)). Tumor necrosis factor-alpha inhibitors (TNFi) showed the lowest IR. In the bivariate analysis, all b/tsDMARDs had more risk of switching compared to TNFi (HR: anti-lL-17 vs TNFi: 2.26 (1.17–4.36); others vs TNFi: 3.21 (1.59–6.45)); however, this statistical significance was no longer present in the multivariate analysis once adjustments were made for the covariates. Still, the final model achieved statistical significance in the following variables: gender, clinical symptoms, prescription year, therapy courses, glucocorticoids, and sulfasalazine. Conclusion: In this study, we did not find differences in the rate of switching due to inefficacy among different groups of b/tsDMARDs. Other concomitant treatments, sociodemographic, and clinical variables were identified as risk factors for switching due to inefficacy. The studied drugs are biological therapies that are arthritis-modifying drugs designed early in the last decade to prevent or reduce inflammation caused by the disease. Methods: We included patients from 2007 to 2022 in which their consultant rheumatologist had decided to commence them on biologic therapy. We studied the changes due to drug failure, we also included sociodemographic, clinical and treatments information. Results: The study comprised 141 patients. 52% were women in their fifties. We found that 56 patients change drugs 121 times, with 103 of those changes due to failure drug. This means about 11 out of every 100 patients change their biologic therapy each year. There was no difference in the risk of change between the different studied biologic therapies. Women, those with inflammatory back pain, and those who had tried many different drugs were more likely to change due to drug failure. Using additional therapies like glucocorticoids and sulfasalazine also increased the probability of biologic therapy change.
