Hintergrund und ZielGrasige Feldraine besitzen in der Agrarlandschaft eine hohe Bedeutung in Bezug auf die Erhaltung standorttypischer Arthropodengemeinschaften, deren Biodiversitat und der damit verknupften Okosystemfunktionen. Die Struktur terrestrischer Lebensgemeinschaften wird durch anthropogene Beeintrachtigung verandert, was zum Ersatz sensibler durch tolerante Arten fuhren kann. Vor allem der negative Einfluss von Pestiziden auf Fauna und Flora, die damit verbundenen funktionalen Aspekte (Okosystemfunktionen) sowie die resultierende Verarmung der Systeme sind fur Agrarsysteme seit langerem unumstritten und werden aufgrund der Spray-Drift auch fur die angrenzenden Feldraine vermutet. Die hier vorgestellte Studie untersuchte die Auswirkung nutzungsbedingter Einflusse wie Mahd, Nahrstoffeintrag und Pflanzenschutzmittel auf die Lebensgemeinschaften grasiger Feldraine. Verglichen wurden Referenzflachen, auf denen aufgrund der fehlenden Nutzung im direkten Umland keine Einflusse auf die Lebensgemeinschaften zu erwarten waren und Nichtzielflachen, auf denen diese nicht auszuschliesen waren. Untersucht wurden Standorte in drei Naturraumen: der Julicher Borde, am nordostlichen Rand der Leipziger Tieflandsbucht (Dahlen-Dubener Heiden) und im Raum Mainfranken bei Wurzburg (Marktheidenfelder Platte). In die Analysen wurden, neben den krautigen und grasigen Vegetationsbestanden, die epigaischen Arthropodenzonosen der Carabiden, Araneen, Collembolen, Hymenopteren, Syrphiden und Coccinelliden sowie abiotische Parameter einbezogen. Das Ziel dieser Untersuchung war die Entwicklung einer statistischen Methode, die geeignet ist, die Anteile einzelner Einflussgrosen an der Gesamtvarianz von Freilanddaten, unter besonderer Berucksichtigung nicht beobachtbarer Nutzungseinflusse wie Pflanzenschutzmitteleintrage, mithilfe eines Ausschlussverfahrens darzustellen. Die Extraktion von Restvarianzmustern ermoglichte die Aufdeckung maskierter Effekte auf einer unter dem reinen Abundanzmuster liegenden Skala. Material und Methoden Die Variabilitat im Artenspektrum wurde mithilfe einer nichtmetrischen multidimensionalen Skalierung (NMDS) visualisiert. Indikatorartenanalysen lieferten diejenigen Arten, die als statistisch signifikante Indikatoren fur die Standortbedingungen erkannt werden konnten. Der Zusammenhang zwischen der Artzusammensetzung und den Umweltfaktoren wurde mithilfe einer kanonischen Korrespondenzanalyse statistisch modelliert. Durch Varianzpartitionierung war es moglich, den Varianzanteil zu extrahieren, welcher sich an ein Set von Kovariablen binden lies. Fur die verbleibende Residualvarianz konnte nicht ausgeschlossen werden, dass diese auf einen Pestizideinfluss zuruckzufuhren war. Ergebnisse Die Analysen zeigten, dass sowohl die Lebensgemeinschaften der Referenzen als auch der Nichtzielflachen in allen drei Naturraumen eine eigene Qualitat besitzen und aufgrund der okologischen Distanz (Bray-Curtis) klar voneinander unterschieden werden konnten. Auf der Basis der Anteile der Variabilitat, welche statistisch durch einen nutzungsbedingten Einfluss zu erklaren waren, konnten zwei unterschiedliche Richtungen von Reaktionen auf nutzungsbedingte Einflusse unterschieden werden: zum einen der Ruckgang sensibler Arten und zum anderen die Zunahme konkurrenzstarkerer Spezies. Diskussion Mithilfe der Residualvarianzen konnte ein eindeutiger Einfluss einzelner nutzungsbedingter Parameter auf die Lebensgemeinschaften der Bodenarthropoden sowie der Vegetation unterhalb des Abundanzmusters gezeigt werden. Die in den Rohdaten zu beobachtenden Abundanzverschiebungen wurden auf einen multidimensionalen Faktorenkomplex zuruckgefuhrt, der durch den Einsatz einer partiellen Ordinationstechnik aufgelost und so der Zusammenhang zwischen nutzungsbedingten Parametern und den beobachteten Veranderungen in den Lebensgemeinschaften quantifiziert werden konnte. Anhand der hier vorgestellten Methode konnte gezeigt werden, dass nach Ausschluss der Kovariablen in den Rohdaten Muster zu erkennen waren, die mit einem Nutzungseffekt korreliert werden konnten. Schlussfolgerungen Nutzungsbedingte Einflusse in den Nichtzielflachen nivellierten die naturraumspezifischen Artengemeinschaften in Richtung naturraumubergreifender, ubiquitar gepragter Zonosen. Die Hypothese des Ruckgangs sensibler Arten sowie der Zunahme toleranter Arten aufgrund einer Pestizidbeeinflussung konnte gestarkt und quantifiziert werden. Sensible Arten, die in den Nichtzielflachen gegenuber den Referenzflachen zuruckgingen, zeigten je nach Naturraum unterschiedlich starke Nutzungsempfindlichkeiten. Ihnen wurde ein groseres Indikationspotenzial zugesprochen als den in den Nichtzielflachen gegenuber den Referenzen zunehmenden, toleranten Arten. Aus der Gruppe der sensiblen Arten konnten mit Pardosa palustris und Poecilus cupreus zwei naturraumspezifische Indikatoren fur den maskierten Nutzungseffekt isoliert werden. Empfehlungen und Ausblick Eine naturraumspezifische Betrachtung der Nutzungseffekte wird aufgrund der unterschiedlichen Empfindlichkeiten der Arten in den Lebensgemeinschaften der drei Untersuchungsgebiete als notwendig angesehen. Die Ausarbeitung und Prazisierung standorttypischer Referenzzustande fur terrestrische Agrarsysteme bleibt eine wichtige Aufgabe fur die Zukunft. Das vorgestellte Verfahren leitet ein naturraumspezifisches, komplexes Wirkungsmuster anthropogener Beeintrachtigungen auf terrestrische Lebensgemeinschaften ab. Es ist geeignet, maskierte Effekte zu extrahieren und damit beispielsweise einen nachhaltigeren Umgang mit Pflanzenschutzmitteln zu unterstutzen. Daruber hinaus bietet es die Moglichkeit zur Validierung von Bewertungssystemen fur die Auswirkung von Nutzungseinflussen auf terrestrische Arthropoden und Pflanzen. Die standortbezogenen, artspezifischen Empfindlichkeitswerte ermoglichen zudem eine regionalisierte Betrachtung okotoxikologischer Effekte und die Integration in raumlich explizite Effektbewertungsmodelle.

Modern societies depend on environmental sustainability and on new generations of individuals well-trained by environmental research and teaching institutions. In the past, significant contributions to the identification, assessment, and management of chemical stressors with legal consequences have been made.Within this article, we intend to elucidate the merits and the emerging challenges of chemicals-related environmental sciences. The manuscript is supported by more than 70 professors and university academics of leading institutions in Germany, Switzerland, Austria, and other countries in Europe, but addresses topics of global concern.Many environmental problems of pollutants remain to be addresses, since new chemical compounds or classes of new compounds are continuously developed and brought to the market and sooner or later "emerge" in the environment. Further issues are the inclusion of transformation products and chemical mixtures in environmental risk assessment, the long-term presence of xenobiotics bound to soils and sediments, as well as an understanding of the ecological relevance of ecotoxicological end points.We point out the need for a strong academic research and education system in chemicals-related environmental sciences to ministries, politicians, and research funding institutions and we propose to create specific units in the national funding bodies that address basic and interdisciplinary research in this field.

A field study was conducted in Germany to determine the possible effects of transgenic maize cultivation on nontarget epigeic predator organisms. During the growing period of 2001–2003, the activity abundances of spiders and carabid beetles were recorded and compared in three treatments: (1) Bt-maize (Mon 810) expressing the Cry1ab protein from Bacillus thuringiensis (Berliner), (2) an isogenic variety, and (3) the isogenic variety treated with insecticide. All three treatments were replicated in eight plots. The results were evaluated using three different methods. The activity abundances of single species were statistically analyzed by confidence interval methods. In addition, the phenological behaviors of the spider and carabid beetle species were determined, and multivariate statistical evaluation of the community by principal component analysis was conducted. Background In the Directive 2001/18/EC on the deliberate release of genetically modified organisms (GMO) into the environment, a monitoring of potential risks is prescribed after their deliberate release or placing on the market. Experience and data of already existing monitoring networks should be included. The present paper summarizes the major findings of a project funded by the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation (Nutzungsmöglichkeiten der Boden—Dauerbeobachtung der Länder für das Monitoring der Umweltwirkungen gentechnisch veränderter Pflanzen. BfN Skripten, Bonn-Bad Godesberg 369, 2014). The full report in german language can be accessed on http://www.bfn.de and is available as Additional file 1. The aim of the project was to check if it is possible to use the German permanent soil monitoring program (PSM) for the monitoring of GMO. Soil organism communities are highly diverse and relevant with respect to the sustainability of soil functions. They are exposed to GMO material directly by feeding or indirectly through food chain interactions. Other impacts are possible due to their close association to soil particles. Results The PSM program can be considered as representative with regard to different soil types and ecoregions in Germany, but not for all habitat types relevant for soil organisms. Nevertheless, it is suitable as a basic grid for monitoring the potential effects of GMO on soil invertebrates. Conclusions PSM sites should be used to derive reference values, i.e. range of abundance and presence of different relevant species of soil organisms. Based on these references, it is possible to derive threshold values to define the limit of acceptable change or impact. Therefore, a minimum set of sites and minimum set of standardized methods are needed, i.e. characterization of each site, sampling of selected soil organism groups, adequate adaptation of methods for the purpose of monitoring of potential effects of GMO. Finally, and probably most demanding, it is needed to develop a harmonized evaluation concept. The Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR), created in consequence of the Yangtze River's impoundment by the Three Gorges Dam, faces numerous anthropogenic impacts that challenge its unique ecosystem. Organic pollutants, particularly aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) agonists, have been widely detected in the Yangtze River, but only little research was yet done on AhR-mediated activities. Hence, in order to assess effects of organic pollution, with particular focus on AhR-mediated activities, several sites in the TGR area were examined applying the "triad approach". It combines chemical analysis, in vitro, in vivo and in situ investigations to a holistic assessment. Sediments and the benthic fish species Pelteobagrus vachellii were sampled in 2011/2012, respectively, to identify relevant endpoints. Sediment was tested in vitro with the ethoxyresorufin-O-deethylase (EROD) induction assay, and in vivo with the Fish Embryo Toxicity Test and Sediment Contact Assay with Danio rerio. Activities of phase I (EROD) and phase II (glutathione-S-transferase) biotransformation enzymes, pollutant metabolites and histopathological alterations were studied in situ in P. vachellii. EROD induction was tested in vitro and in situ to evaluate possible relationships. Two sites, near Chongqing and Kaixian city, were identified as regional hot-spots and further investigated in 2013. The sediments induced in the in vitro/in vivo bioassays AhR-mediated activities and embryotoxic/teratogenic effects - particularly on the cardiovascular system. These endpoints could be significantly correlated to each other and respective chemical data. However, particle-bound pollutants showed only low bioavailability. The in situ investigations suggested a rather poor condition of P. vachellii, with histopathological alterations in liver and excretory kidney. Fish from Chongqing city exhibited significant hepatic EROD induction and obvious parasitic infestations. The polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) metabolite 1-hydroxypyrene was detected in bile of fish from all sites. All endpoints in combination with the chemical data suggest a pivotal role of PAHs in the observed ecotoxicological impacts.

The degradation of natural and semi-natural landscapes has become a matter of global concern. In Germany, semi-natural grasslands belong to the most species-rich habitat types but have suffered heavily from changes in land use. After abandonment, the course of succession at a specific site is often difficult to predict because many processes interact. In order to support decision making when managing semi-natural grasslands in the Eifel National Park, we built the WoodS-Model (Woodland Succession Model). A multimodeling approach was used to integrate vegetation dynamics in both the herbaceous and shrub/tree layer. The cover of grasses and herbs was simulated in a compartment model, whereas bushes and trees were modelled in an individual-based manner. Both models worked and interacted in a spatially explicit, raster-based landscape. We present here the model description, parameterization and testing. We show highly detailed projections of the succession of a semi-natural grassland including the influence of initial vegetation composition, neighborhood interactions and ungulate browsing. We carefully weighted the single processes against each other and their relevance for landscape development under different scenarios, while explicitly considering specific site conditions. Model evaluation revealed that the model is able to emulate successional patterns as observed in the field as well as plausible results for different population densities of red deer. Important neighborhood interactions such as seed dispersal, the protection of seedlings from browsing ungulates by thorny bushes, and the inhibition of wood encroachment by the herbaceous layer, have been successfully reproduced. Therefore, not only a detailed model but also detailed initialization turned out to be important for spatially explicit projections of a given site. The advantage of the WoodS-Model is that it integrates these many mutually interacting processes of succession.

The impounding of the Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR) at the Yangtze River caused large flooding of urban, industrial, and agricultural areas, and profound land use changes took place. Consequently, substantial amounts of organic and inorganic pollutants were released into the reservoir. Additionally, contaminants and nutrients are entering the reservoir by drift, drainage, and runoff from adjacent agricultural areas as well as from sewage of industry, aquacultures, and households. The main aim of the presented research project is a deeper understanding of the processes that determines the bioaccumulation and biomagnification of organic pollutants, i.e., mainly pesticides, in aquatic food webs under the newly developing conditions of the TGR. The project is part of the Yangtze-Hydro environmental program, financed by the German Ministry of Education and Science. In order to test combinations of environmental factors like nutrients and pollution, we use an integrated modeling approach to study the potential accumulation and biomagnification. We describe the integrative modeling approach and the consecutive adaption of the AQUATOX model, used as modeling framework for ecological risk assessment. As a starting point, pre-calibrated simulations were adapted to Yangtze-specific conditions (regionalization). Two exemplary food webs were developed by a thorough review of the pertinent literature. The first typical for the flowing conditions of the original Yangtze River and the Daning River near the city of Wushan, and the second for the stagnant reservoir characteristics of the aforementioned region that is marked by an intermediate between lake and large river communities of aquatic organisms. In close cooperation with German and Chinese partners of the Yangtze-Hydro Research Association, other site-specific parameters were estimated. The MINIBAT project contributed to the calibration of physicochemical and bathymetric parameters, and the TRANSMIC project delivered hydrodynamic models for water volume and flow velocity conditions. The research questions were firstly focused on the definition of scenarios that could depict representative situations regarding food webs, pollution, and flow conditions in the TGR. The food webs and the abiotic site conditions in the main study area near the city of Wushan that determine the environmental preconditions for the organisms were defined. In our conceptual approach, we used the pesticide propanil as a model substance.

The Yangtze River has been a source of life and prosperity for the Chinese people for centuries and is a habitat for a remarkable variety of aquatic species. But the river suffers from huge amounts of urban sewage, agricultural effluents, and industrial wastewater as well as ship navigation wastes along its course. With respect to the vast amounts of water and sediments discharged by the Yangtze River, it is reasonable to ask whether the pollution problem may be solved by simple dilution. This article reviews the past two decades of published research on organic pollutants in the Yangtze River and several adjacent water bodies connected to the main stream, according to a holistic approach. Organic pollutant levels and potential effects of water and sediments on wildlife and humans, measured in vitro, in vivo, and in situ, were critically reviewed. The contamination with organic pollutants, including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins/polychlorinated dibenzofurans, polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), perfluorinated compounds (PFCs), and others, of water and sediment along the river was described. Especially Wuhan section and the Yangtze Estuary exhibited stronger pollution than other sections. Bioassays, displaying predominantly the endpoints mutagenicity and endocrine disruption, applied at sediments, drinking water, and surface water indicated a potential health risk in several areas. Aquatic organisms exhibited detectable concentrations of toxic compounds like PCBs, OCPs, PBDEs, and PFCs. Genotoxic effects could also be assessed in situ in fish. To summarize, it can be stated that dilution reduces the ecotoxicological risk in the Yangtze River, but does not eliminate it. Keeping in mind an approximately 14 times greater water discharge compared to the major European river Rhine, the absolute pollution mass transfer of the Yangtze River is of severe concern for the environmental quality of its estuary and the East China Sea. Based on the review, further research needs have been identified.

In order to thank Prof. Dr. Hans-Toni Ratte on the occasion of his retirement for his outstanding experimental and modelling merits in the field of ecotoxicology and ecology and his personal 65th anniversary on November 25th this article will present a laudation.

Der SETAC-GLB fordert seit mehreren Jahren den wissen-schaftlichen nachwuchs durch die Verleihung von Forder-preisen. Die Preise werden jeweils im rahmen der Jahresta-gungen uberreicht. Die beste eingereichte Doktorarbeit wird hierbei mit einem Forderpreis in Hohe von 3000 € und die beste Diplom- oder Masterarbeit mit einem Forderpreis in Hohe von 1000 € gewurdigt. Die Preisverleihung fand auf der Jahrestagung 2009 der SETAC-GLB in Munchen-Wei-henstephan statt, auf der den Preistragern auch die Moglich-keit geboten wurde, ihre Arbeiten einem groseren Publikum vorzustellen. Der Preis fur die beste Doktorarbeit wurde vom Verband der Chemischen Industrie e. V. (http://www.vci.de) gestiftet. Fur die nachwuchsforderpreise 2009 hatten sich insge-samt 15 Kandidatinnen und Kandidaten mit acht Doktorar-beiten und sieben Diplomarbeiten beworben. Die Auswahl der besten Arbeiten erfolgte durch die Mitglieder des Vor-standes des SETAC-GLB in einem zweistufigen Verfahren. Fur die Auswahl der preiswurdigen Arbeiten waren die hohe wissenschaftliche Qualitat sowie eine klare Darstel-lung der verwendeten Methoden und der erzielten Ergebnis-se ausschlaggebend. Eine ansprechende und ubersichtliche Strukturierung der Arbeit war ebenso wichtig wie eine aus-sagefahige Diskussion mit einer kritischen Bewertung der eigenen Ergebnisse. Es war auch in diesem Jahr wieder eine spannende Herausforderung fur die Jury, die Preistrager aus den eingereichten Arbeiten auszuwahlen. Das breite The-menspektrum aus allen Gebieten der Okotoxikologie und Umweltchemie und die durchweg hohe Qualitat der Bewer-bungen machte die Entscheidung nicht leicht. Die Wahl fiel auf zwei Arbeiten aus dem umweltanalytischen Bereich und aus dem Themenfeld der Wirkungsforschung. Der Vorstand der SETAC-GLB gratuliert den Preistragern 2009

gaiac was founded in 2003 as a research institute affiliated to the RWTH Aachen University with a research focus on the effects of anthropogenic influences on aquatic and terrestrial biocoenoses. gaiac as a small and medium enterprise (SME) operates in close cooperation with the Institute for Environmental Research at Aachen University which provides the chairman and further members of the board of the association. Combining experimental research in the fields of “aquatic ecology”, “terrestrial ecology” and “ecotoxicology” with the development and application of corresponding models is a unique strength of the institute. Vom 06.-08. Oktober 2004 land die Zweite Gemeinsame Jahrestagung der SETAC-GLB (Society of Environmental Toxicology & Chemistry Europe, German-Language Branch e.V.) und der GDCh-Fachgruppe 'Umweltchemie und Okotoxikologie' in Aachen statt. Das bunte und interdisziplin~ire Angebot mit 85 Postern und 75 Vortr~igen bot einen umfassenden Oberblick fiber die aktuelle Umwelt-Schadstoff-Forschung und lockte 280 Teilnehmer in die Kaiserstadt Aachen (im Dreil~indereck von Deutschland, den Niederlanden und Belgien gelegen). Erfreulicherweise beteiligten sich diesmal auch die niederl~indischen Wissenschaftsorganisationen KNCV-MC (Royal Dutch Chemistry Society Environmental Chemistry Section), VVM (Netherlands Association of Environmental Professionals), NVTMT (Dutch Toxicology Society Environmental Toxicology) sowie der europ~iische Verband FECS (Federation of European Chemical Societies and Professional Institutions) an der Gestaltung des Tagungsprogramms. So nahmen auf der gemischt englischund deutschsprachigen Tagung auch 30 Wissenschaftler aus anderen europ~iischen L~indern tell.

It is necessary to combine ecological and social assessment of energy supply options in an integrated approach to come to a holistic understanding of acceptable scenarios. The study thus argues the importance of a thorough ecological basis for social acceptance analyses in this context and exemplifies an integrated approach in which scenarios are evaluated from both ecological and social perspectives. To illustrate the methodology, first, spatially explicit scenarios of electricity supply were assessed according to their ecological footprint by deducing ecological values of the respective landscapes from biotope valences. Following, the scenarios and their ecological assessment served as input for an empirical survey to assess attitudes and preference for an electricity mix (shares of wind power, photovoltaics (PV), and biogas), land use for the infrastructure (in the forest/on pastures), as well as specific combinations of electricity mix and land use. It is shown how, by this two-step procedure, socially preferred and ecologically sustainable scenarios (in this case, electricity mix with a high share of PV (on roofs) with the remaining infrastructure on pastures) can be identified and evaluated within one frame of reference. Methodological challenges and policy implications of the approach are discussed.

In den vergangenen Jahren gab es verschiedene Initiativen, die auf die unzureichende Fördersituation der Schadstoffbezogenen Umweltwissenschaften in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland aufmerksam gemacht haben. Um eine objektive Analyse über die Fördersituation der Ökotoxikologie und Umweltchemie in Deutschland zu erhalten, wurde eine anonyme Online-Befragung ausgearbeitet. Mit Unterstützung der Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (SETAC) – German Language Branch und der Gesellschaft Deutscher Chemiker (GDCh) – Fachgruppe für Umweltchemie und Ökotoxikologie wurde eine Einladung zur Teilnahme an der Befragung an alle Mitglieder dieser beiden maßgeblichen Verbände der Ökotoxikologie und Umweltchemie im deutschsprachigen Raum versendet. Nur leitende Mitarbeiter aus den Bereichen Forschung, Behörden und Industrie sollten an der Befragung teilnehmen. Die Befragung gliedert sich in eine Sektion zur sozioökonomischen Charakterisierung der Teilnehmer, eine zur Förderung der Forschung durch die DFG und eine zur Förderung durch andere Geldgeber. Insgesamt haben 71 Wissenschaftler und Wissenschaftlerinnen in leitenden Positionen aus verschiedenen Sparten an der Befragung teilgenommen. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass die Teilnehmer als sehr leistungsstark eingestuft werden können. 48,5 % der Befragten hatten bereits einen Antrag bei der DFG gestellt. Ein Drittel der Befragten gaben an, eine Förderung durch die DFG erhalten zu haben. 64 % sind mit der Förderung Schadstoffbezogener Umweltwissenschaften durch die DFG nicht zufrieden, nur 7 % sind zufrieden. Es zeigte sich, dass die Anträge insgesamt sehr heterogen auf verschiedene Fachbereiche der DFG verteilt sind. Geowissenschaften, Wasserforschung und Chemie nehmen die ersten Ränge ein, vor Biologie und Ökologie. Im Gegensatz dazu gaben 91,2 % der Befragten an, dass Sie bereits Drittmittelanträge bei anderen Förderinstitutionen (außer der DFG) gestellt haben, und 83,6 % wurden bereits entsprechende Drittmittelanträge bewilligt. 62,3 % der Befragten sind der Meinung, dass sich die Fördersituation für die Schadstoffbezogenen Umweltwissenschaften in den letzten Jahren insgesamt verschlechtert oder sogar deutlich verschlechtert hat. Der überwiegende Anteil der Befragten (60,9 %) ist mit der Fördersituation durch Drittmittelgeber unzufrieden, nur 10,9 % sind damit zufrieden. Auf die Frage „Ist die Forschungsförderung im europäischen Ausland insgesamt besser als in Deutschland?“ antworteten 30 % mit „ja“, 9 % mit „nein“ und 61 % mit „ich weiß nicht“. Zusammenfassend ergab die Befragung, dass die Fördersituation der Ökotoxikologie und Umweltchemie in Deutschland insgesamt als steigerungsbedürftig, bei der DFG jedoch als problematisch zu bewerten ist. Die auffällige Unterrepräsentation der DFG im Vergleich zu anderen Drittmittelgebern verdeutlicht, dass die wichtigste Förderinstitution Deutschlands den Bedürfnissen der Schadstoffbezogenen Umweltwissenschaften nicht hinreichend Rechnung trägt. Insbesondere die Antworten auf die offenen Fragen bezüglich Verbesserungsmöglichkeiten der Forschungsförderung sollten als Grundlage für einen offenen Dialog der Schadstoffbezogenen Umweltforschung mit den Drittmittelgebern DFG, BMBF und DBU bzw. den entsprechenden Institutionen in CH und A genutzt werden. In recent years several initiatives addressed the inadequate financial support of pollutant-related environmental research in the Federal Republic of Germany. For an objective analysis about the research funding in ecotoxicology and environmental chemistry in Germany, an anonymous online survey was prepared. With support of the Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (SETAC) - German Language Branch and the German Chemical Society (GDCh) - Division of Environmental Chemistry and Ecotoxicology an invitation to participate in the survey was sent to all members of these two major associations for ecotoxicology and environmental chemistry in Germany (D), Switzerland (CH) and Austria (A). Only senior staff from the areas academics, government and industry was invited. The present article introduces the results of the survey. It is segmented in a section on socio-economic characterization of the participants, a section on support of research by the DFG and a section on funding by other funding organizations. A total of 71 male and female scientists in senior positions from various areas participated in the survey. The results revealed that the participants are to be classified as having excellent records. 48.5% of the respondents had submitted at least one research proposal to the DFG in the past, but one third actually received financial support by the DFG. 64% are not satisfied with the DFG support of pollutant-related research, only 7% are satisfied. It turned out that the research proposals are generally very heterogeneous and thus distributed to various units of the DFG with geosciences, water research and chemistry ranking highest, followed by biology and ecology. 91.2% of the respondents indicated that they have submitted proposals for research funding to other funding institutions (except the DFG), and 83.6% already have received appropriate external funding. 62.3% of the scientists believe that overall support for chemicals-related research in recent years has significantly deteriorated or is deteriorating. The vast majority of respondents (60.9%) is dissatisfied with the funding situation, only 10.9% are satisfied. When asked "Is the total research funding in other European countries superior to that in Germany?" 30% answered "yes", 9% answered "no" and 61% "do not know". In summary the survey shows that the funding situation for research in ecotoxicology and environmental chemistry in Germany is improvable, and with respect to the DFG it is considered problematic. The noticeable under-representation of the DFG in comparison to other funding institutions shows that the most important funding body in Germany does not take into account the requirements of pollutant-related environmental sciences. In particular the answers to the open questions regarding improvement of research funding should be used as a basis for an open dialogue of chemicals-related environmental research institutes with the funding institutions DFG, BMBF and DBU and corresponding institutions in CH and A.
