51. Principal Concerns in Indiana: Focus on Developing Current Principals. Data Brief

Abstract

Common sense and recent research make it clear that successful schools need strong principals. Strong principals help drive school performance in many ways, from shaping a school's mission and culture to hiring, developing, and retaining good teachers. Even so, principals often get short shrift in today's debates about human capital in public education. Compared to the large body of research and policy attention revolving around teachers, the field knows surprisingly little about the principal workforce. This knowledge gap means that it often is hard for school districts and states to make strategic decisions to improve their principal workforces. Where do most principals come from? How long do they stay in the job? How well do they perform? How many will need to be hired and developed in the future? Few districts or states know the answers. States need to build detailed longitudinal data systems to answer these and other important questions about their principals, just like the ones they have to track teachers and students. In the meantime, state and local leaders can examine the administrative data they already have to get a basic picture of their principal workforce, one that can help prompt deeper questions and discussions about the challenges and opportunities they face. This "Principal Concerns" data brief is an example of this type of analysis for Indiana. The authors use publicly available state administrative data on principals and schools, as well as data from the U.S. Department of Education, to examine the following questions: (1) How many principals are near retirement eligibility, and how is retirement eligibility distributed across schools and locations?; and (2) How many principals are leading schools with results that seem to beat the odds, and how many principals are struggling? The answers to these basic questions have the potential to prompt deeper discussion about the principal workforce. (Contains 4 figures and 10 footnotes.)

52. Evidence for rapid avoidance of rockfish habitat under reduced quota and comprehensive at-sea monitoring in the British Columbia Pacific halibut fishery

Abstract

The British Columbia longline fishery for Pacific halibut (Hippoglossus stenolepis) has experienced important recent management changes, including the introduction of comprehensive electronic catch monitoring on all vessels; an integrated transferable quota system; a reduction in Pacific halibut quotas; and, beginning in 2016, sharp decreases in quota for yelloweye rockfish (Sebastes ruberrimus, an incidentally caught species). We describe this fishery before integration, after integration, and after the yelloweye rockfish quota reduction using spatial clustering methods to define discrete fishing opportunities. We calculate the relative utilization of these fishing opportunities and their overlap with areas with high encounter rates of yelloweye rockfish during each of the three periods. The spatial footprint (area fished) increased before integration, then decreased after integration. Each period showed shifts in utilization among four large fishing areas. Immediately after the reductions in yelloweye rockfish quota, fishing opportunities with high encounter rates of yelloweye rockfish had significantly lower utilization than areas with low encounter rates, implying rapid avoidance behaviour. La gestion de la peche au fletan du Pacifique (Hippoglossus stenolepis) a la palangre en Colombie-Britannique a recemment connu d'importants changements, dont l'introduction de la surveillance electronique exhaustive des prises sur tous les navires, un systeme de quotas transferables integre, une reduction des quotas de fletans du Pacifique et, depuis 2016, des baisses marquees des quotas de sebastes aux yeux jaunes (Sebastes ruberrimus, une espece pechee accessoirement). Nous decrivons cette peche avant l'integration, apres l'integration et apres la reduction des quotas de sebastes aux yeux jaunes en utilisant des methodes de regroupement spatial pour definir differentes possibilites de peche. Nous calculons l'utilisation relative de ces possibilites de peche et leur chevauchement de zones caracterisees par des taux eleves de rencontres de sebastes aux yeux jaunes durant chacune des trois periodes. L'empreinte spatiale (la superficie visee par la peche) a augmente avant l'integration, puis diminue apres l'integration. Chaque periode a connu des modifications de l'utilisation entre quatre grandes zones de peche. Abstract

Reading comprehension involves understanding and interpreting information in written texts and constitutes a minimum academic 'threshold' that impacts broader education. Developing strong reading skills is particularly challenging for non-native readers because of the dual need for strong linguistic skills and efficient strategy use. This study focused on teaching English reading in Senegal, where most students are non-native speakers of the language and often perform poorly on national reading examinations, suggesting that how English reading is taught needs improvement grounded in best practices. 54 Senegalese EFL teachers completed an online survey eliciting their backgrounds and training, classroom profiles, knowledge and frequency of use of instructional practices and beliefs about the effectiveness of and rationale for various practices. Teachers were aware of most basic strategies, but many lacked familiarity with concepts associated with modern (cognitive) approaches to reading. Though some effective techniques were widely used, teachers' reasons for using them did not always align with research, suggesting that teachers may misunderstand them. The article concludes with recommendations for improving EFL teacher training and instruction, such as a greater focus on interactive questioning and activities with an instructional (not assessment) focus that are applicable in Senegal and other developing nations. 58. The impact of stapled compared to handsewn repair on anastomotic outcomes in trauma patients: a systematic review and meta‐analysis.

Abstract

Background: Approach to enteric anastomotic technique has been a subject of debate, with no clear consensus as to whether handsewn or stapled techniques are superior in trauma settings, which are influenced by unique perturbances to important processes such as immune function, coagulation, wound healing and response to infection. This systematic review and meta‐analysis compares the risk of anastomotic complications in trauma patients with gastrointestinal injury requiring restoration of continuity with handsewn versus staples approaches. Methods: A comprehensive computer assisted search of electronic databases Medline, Embase and Cochrane Central was performed. Comparative studies evaluating stapled versus handsewn gastrointestinal anastomoses in trauma patients were included in this review. All anastomoses involving small intestine to small intestine, small to large intestine, and large intestine to large intestine were eligible. Anastomosis to the rectum was excluded. Outcomes evaluated were (1) anastomotic leak (AL) (2) a composite anastomotic complication (CAC) end point consisting of AL, enterocutaneous fistula (ECF) and deep abdominal abscess. Results: Eight studies involving 931 patients were included and of these patients, data from 790 patients were available for analysis. There was no significant difference identified for anastomotic leak between the two groups (OR = 0.77; 95% CI 0.24–2.45; P = 0.66). There was no significant improvement in composite anastomotic complication; defined as a composite of anastomotic leak, deep intra‐abdominal abscess and intra‐abdominal fistula, in the stapled anastomosis group (OR = 1.05; 95% CI 0.53–2.09; P = 0.90). Overall, there was limited evidence to suggest superiority with handsewn or stapled anastomosis for improving AL or CAC, however this was based on studies of moderate to high risk of bias with poor control for confounders. Discussion: This meta‐analysis demonstrates no superiority improvement in anastomotic outcomes with handsewn or stapled repair. These findings may represent no effect in anastomotic outcome by technique for all situations. However, considering the paucity of information on potential confounders, perhaps there is a difference in outcome with overall technique or for specific subgroups that have not been described due to limited sample size and data on confounders. 67. The Impact of L1 Writing System on ESL Knowledge of Vowel and Consonant Spellings

Abstract

Orthographic knowledge, the general ability to learn, store, and use information about the orthographic form of words (Stanovich & West, 1989), is a crucial skill for supporting literacy. Although the development of first language (L1) orthographic awareness is impacted by the characteristics of a learner's L1 writing system, relatively little is known about what impact the L1 may have on second language (L2) orthographic awareness. In this study, English language learners from three L1s (French, Hebrew, Mandarin Chinese), plus L1 English speakers, were tested on their English spelling knowledge using a word-pseudohomophone discrimination task. In addition to allowing for the cross-linguistic comparisons, items were designed to examine whether learners had differing performance on pseudohomophones (misspellings) that targeted vowels versus consonants. Consistent with previous research (e.g., McBride-Chang, Bialystok, Cong, & Li, 2004), the L1 Chinese speakers had the highest (L2) accuracy, followed by the L1 Hebrew and the L1 French speakers. The participants from non-alphabetic languages (Hebrew and Chinese) had significantly lower accuracy on items with misspellings involving vowels compared to consonants, and the size of the vowel-consonant accuracy difference varied substantially across L1 groups. The results demonstrate that the characteristics of a learner's L1 writing system, particularly the existence of vowel and consonant graphemes, impact the development of L2 orthographic knowledge and sensitivity to different types of word misspellings.

Abstract

Cancer has often been set apart from other illnesses and diseases, receiving separate sources of funding and a high level of media and public coverage. Each year around 230,000 people in England will be diagnosed with cancer and incidence is projected to nearly double by 2020 (Department of Health [DoH], 2007a & 2007b). The development of government initiatives such as The NHS Cancer Plan (DoH, 2000) and The Cancer Reform Strategy (DoH, 2007a), signals that cancer care will remain a government and National Health Service priority. This thesis is comprised of three papers. The first two, a literature review and empirical study, focus on two under-researched areas within the field of cancer. Chapter one presents a critical review of research on the relationship between human-animal interaction (HAI) and psychological wellbeing, as applied to people with cancer. Research in the field of HAI incorporates activities associated with pet ownership, pet/animal assisted therapy and animal-assisted activity. HAI is increasingly used in a variety of healthcare settings with reported psychological and physical benefits. The review reveals empirical support for the association between HAI and improvements in mood, and highlights limitations within the current evidence base and directions for further research. Chapter two presents an empirical study exploring women‘s experiences of surviving early stage ovarian cancer. There is a paucity of research into what the experience of survivorship means for these women. The paper focuses on possible changes to personal and social identity using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis. Findings revealed four superordinate themes comprising: participant‘s reflections on, and response to, diagnosis and treatment; the meaning which the experience of survivorship holds for them; the impact of the cancer experience, including changes to personal identity. Clinical implications of the findings and directions for further research are discussed. Chapter three consists of a reflective paper considering some of the issues which arose for the researcher during the research process. They include considerations which may be of potential benefit to other clinicians or researchers within the field of HAI or cancer care.

70. Identification and characterisation of ion channels in the eye

Abstract

The aim of this investigation was to provide a complete'profile of the ion channels that are present in a specified ocular tissue by exploiting recent advances in genomics. Microarray technology in conjunction with a specifically designed ion channel database was used to comprehensively map the gene expression profile ofion channels in our ocular model system, the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE). One hundred and thirty ion channel genes were represented on the array and using • stringent criteria we were able to reveal expression for several previously uncharacterised channels. Of the novel ion channels that we detected, a non-selective cation channel, Polycystin 2 (PC2) was of particular interest. Therefore, the second objective of this research was to use immunolabelling techniques to determine the cellular and subcellular distribution of the protein, and a G-protein coupled receptor with which it forms a functioning complex, Polycystin I, in the eye. Analysis of RPE cells and murine ocular tissue revealed for the first time a .widespread distribution of both proteins in the eye. Furthermore there was evidence of co-ordinated and isolated expression patterns ofthe polycystin proteins confined mainly to adult tissue. A direct function for PCI and PC2 was investigated in the RPE by employing RNA interference techniques. Gene expression and immunofluorescence studies revealed that polycystin knockdown resulted in cadherin, catenin and tight junction protein alteration that could ultimately lead to compromised cell-cell adhesion and cell-cell junction integrity, thus suggesting that both polycystins play an important functional role in the RPE. Abstract

Objectives: Systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) is a frequent complication of cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB). SIRS is associated with significant morbidity and mortality, but its pathogenesis remains incompletely understood, and as a result, biomarkers are lacking and treatment remains expectant and supportive. This study aimed to understand the pathophysiological mechanisms driving SIRS induced by CPB and identify novel therapeutic targets that might reduce systemic inflammation and improve patient outcomes. Methods: Twenty‐one patients undergoing cardiac surgery and CPB were recruited, and blood was sampled before, during and after surgery. SIRS was defined using the American College of Chest Physicians/Society of Critical Care Medicine criteria. We performed immune cell profiling and whole blood transcriptomics and measured individual mediators in plasma/serum to characterise SIRS induced by CPB. Results: Nineteen patients fulfilled criteria for SIRS, with a mean duration of 2.7 days. Neutrophil numbers rose rapidly with CPB and remained elevated for at least 48 h afterwards. Transcriptional signatures associated with neutrophil activation and degranulation were enriched during CPB. We identified a network of cytokines governing these transcriptional changes, including granulocyte colony‐stimulating factor (G‐CSF), a regulator of neutrophil production and function. Conclusions: We identified neutrophils and G‐CSF as major regulators of CPB‐induced systemic inflammation. Short‐term targeting of G‐CSF could provide a novel therapeutic strategy to limit neutrophil‐mediated inflammation and tissue damage in SIRS induced by CPB. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Cytosolic proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) is involved in neutrophil survival and function, in which it acts as a scaffold and associates with proteins involved in apoptosis, NADPH oxidase activation, cytoskeletal dynamics, and metabolism. While the PCNA interactome has been characterized in neutrophils under homeostatic conditions, less is known about neutrophil PCNA in pathophysiological contexts. Granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) is a cytokine produced in response to inflammatory stimuli that regulates many aspects of neutrophil biology. Here, we used isolated normal-density neutrophils from G-CSF–treated haemopoietic stem cell donors (GDs) as a model to understand the role of PCNA during inflammation. Proteomic analysis of the neutrophil cytosol revealed significant differences between GDs and healthy donors (HDs). PCNA was one of the most upregulated proteins in GDs, and the PCNA interactome was significantly different in GDs compared with HDs. Importantly, while PCNA associated with almost all enzymes involved in glycolysis in HDs, these associations were decreased in GDs. Functionally, neutrophils from GDs had a significant increase in glycolysis compared with HDs. Using p21 competitor peptides, we showed that PCNA negatively regulates neutrophil glycolysis in HDs but had no effect on GD neutrophils. These data demonstrate that G-CSF alters the PCNA scaffold, affecting interactions with key glycolytic enzymes, and thus regulates glycolysis, the main energy pathway utilized by neutrophils. By this selective control of glycolysis, PCNA can organize neutrophils functionality in parallel with other PCNA mechanisms of prolonged survival. 94. Positive Emotional Engagement and Autism Risk

Abstract

Positive emotional engagement develops in the context of face-to-face interactions during the first 6 months of life. Deficits in emotional engagement are characteristic of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and may characterize the younger siblings of children with ASD (high-risk siblings). High-risk siblings are likely to exhibit a broad range of positive emotional engagement that may or may not be associated with ASD outcomes. We examined positive emotional engagement (i.e., smiling rate and contingent responsiveness to the partner's smile) during the infant-parent interaction episodes of the face-to-face/still face protocol at 6 months of age. The sample included 43 high-risk infant siblings, 11 of whom went on to an ASD diagnosis, and 25 low-risk siblings with no family history of ASD. Low-risk siblings and high-risk siblings without ASD showed the typical "still-face effect" (i.e., decreases in smiling rate after period of parental nonresponsiveness), but high-risk siblings with later ASD outcomes did not show this decrease. Although high-risk siblings without an ASD diagnosis were less likely to respond to their parents' smiles than were low-risk siblings, the children with eventual ASD did not differ from the other groups in contingent responsiveness. Findings suggest that subtle differences in positive emotional engagement are present in the early development of high-risk siblings but are not consistently associated with ASD outcomes.
