Abstract

In this paper, measurements from various narrowband and wideband Land Mobile Satellite (LMS) and Satellite Aeronautical experimental campaigns that have been homogeneously pre-processed and re-analysed in order to derive concise statistical results for submission to ITU-R statistical databanks. A number of problems in the processing steps were identified and various methods were applied to minimise the effect on the results, for instance, the calibration of the Line of Sight (LOS) level, the accuracy of position and attitude of transmitter and receiver or problems with bandwidth and frequency synchronisation/drifts for wideband measurements., Anglais

Abstract

Scintillation has an important impact on the Earth-space propagation and affects the fade mitigation techniques developed for frequencies above 20 GHz. Scintillation being a random variation superimposed on the signal, it is described by its variance. Most of the exiting models predict the cumulative distribution function (cdf) of scintillation from ground measured parameters, such as temperature and humidity. The use of radiosoundings increases the accuracy of the prediction. Some problems have however to be solved, such as the sensitivity of the cdf to the value of some derivatives used in the calculation. High resolution radiosoundings give better height accuracy but increase the noise present in the calculation. Preliminary solutions are proposed to improve the processing of the radiosonde data and the results are compared with measured data., Anglais

Abstract

After a review of the physical/mathematical definitions of anisotropy and canting angle, parameters currently used for describing the depolarization of electromagnetic waves due to hydrometeors, we present some specific algorithms to retrieve these parameters from measurements of the atmospheric polarization transfer matrix, based on data collected during the Italsat propagation experiment at 50 GHz in a slant path with elevation angle 37.7^\circ. The data analysis, conducted after applying particular “ad hoc” procedures and severe editing, allowed to separate in many cases the ice- from the rain-effects, both in single events and statistically. We also present mathematical models derived from the observed behavior of the descriptive parameters, hopefully applicable also in different conditions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
