Se evaluó la ganancia diaria de peso (GDP), calidad seminal, libido y capacidad de servicio en carneros de pelo, bajo pastoreo y suplementados con raciones conteniendo un 3 % de aceite de palma (AP) o grasa animal (GA). Se utilizaron ocho corderos Black Belly x Kathadin y Pelibuey x Kathadin. A los animales se les suministró durante los primeros 60 días, 300 g por cabeza de una ración con 3 % de GA, cantidad que se elevó a 500 g desde los 60 a los 120 días. En el grupo experimental GA se sustituyó por la misma proporción de aceite de palma. Cada 14 días se evaluó el peso vivo (PV), GDP, condición corporal (CC), circunferencia escrotal (CE), perímetro torácico (PT), altura a la cruz (AC) y largo de la cruz a la grupa (LCG). La calidad seminal se evaluó a partir de los 6 meses de edad con un peso promedio de 26,0 kg. Durante siete semanas, se evaluó el volumen, concentración, motilidad masal e individual, % de anormalidades primarias y % de espermatozoides vivos. La libido y capacidad de monta se valoró con hembras estrogenizadas registrando el número de montas (NM), el número de servicios (NS), el número de montas por servicio (NMS), tiempo de reacción (TR) a las sucesivas montas (1M, 2M, 3M) y servicios (1S, 2S y 3S). Las variables se analizaron mediante un ANOVA. No se registraron diferencias entre AP y GA para las variables PV, GDP, PT, CC, AC y LCG. La calidad seminal, libido y capacidad de servicio fueron similares en ambos tratamientos. El número de servicios y el tiempo de reacción a la monta o al servicio fueron similares en ambos tratamientos sin embargo se observaron diferencias en el número de montas lo que se reflejó en el número de montas por servicio. El aceite de palma es una alternativa energética para la alimentación de carneros en el trópico que no afecta al crecimiento, calidad seminal y libido. The average daily gain (GDP), semen quality, libido, and serviceability in 8 hair rams (Black Belly x Kathadin and Pelibuey x Kathadin) supplemented with rations containing a 3 % of palm oil (AP) or animal fat (GA) were studied during 120 days. During the first 60 days, lambs were fed with 300 g/animal/d of a diet with 3 % of animal fat and, the following 60 days, each lamb received 500 g of feed. In the experimental group GA was replaced by AP. The average daily weight gain (GDP), body condition score (CC), scrotal circumference (CE), thoracic perimeter (PT), height at withers (AC) and length from the withers to the rump (LCG) were evaluated. The seminal quality was evaluated from 6 months of age and average weight of 26.0 kg. During seven weeks, the volume, concentration, mass motility, individual primary abnormalities and living sperm percentage were assessed. To evaluate the libido and capacity of mating, the males were placed for 15 minutes with estrogenized females; number of mounts (NM), number of services (NS), number of mounts by service (NMS), reaction time (TR) to matings (1M, 2M, 3M) and services (1S, 2S, 3S), were recorded. The variables were analyzed by ANOVA. There were no differences among AP and GA for the evaluated variables for PV, GDP, PT, CC, AC, and LCG. Semen quality, libido and serving capacity were similar. The number of services and reaction times for mount and service were also similar for both treatments, however diferents were observed in the number of mounts and so in number of mounts by service. The AP is an energetic alternative that can be considered in the feeding of rams in the tropics without affecting growth, the seminal quality and libido.

En este documento se valora el comportamiento de una especie de matorral (Thymus baeticus Boiss. ex Lacaita), con hábitat en las montañas del sureste español (endemismo bético), en cuanto a su efecto protector del suelo. Marine sponges (Porifera) have drawn the attention from a broad number of researchers all over the world. These animals and their simbionts are specialized in chemical warfare, producing biologically active chemical substances as an effective defense against predators. They have been considered a goldmine to chemists, from which have been discovered more than 6000 novel structures; many of them, with enormous biomedical applications, mainly against cancer, but also against bacteria, viruses and other diseases. Some of the sponge-derived drugs are available in the market, such as: Ara-A (antiviral) and Ara-C (anticancer), but there are diverse bioactive compounds under clinical trials. In Cuba, the researches related to the isolation of compounds from marine sponges are scarce and the initial studies were about pharmacological evaluations of extracts and fractions. In recent studies, three sponges were investigated (Agelas cerebrum, Niphates digitalis and Pandaros acanthifolium), from which were isolated and identified 45 metabolites, two of them were isolated for the first time as natural products, including the discovery of 30 novel metabolites, dividing in two new families of steroidal saponins with uncommon chemical characteristics and potential against several parasitic protozoa and tumor human cell lines. Soil erosion is one of the main physical processes of land degradation in Spain. Several studies in the Mediterranean environment have demonstrated the positive effect of vegetation covers on the reduction of water erosion and their indirect improvement of the soil physical and chemical properties, essentially by the incorporation of organic matter.Soil loss and surface runoff patterns over a four-year period were monitored in erosion plots from hillslope with two different cover-crop strips: (1) non-tillage with leguminous (Lens esculenta Moench) and (2) non-tillage with and a mixture of autochthonous thymes (Thymus baeticus Boiss. ex Lacaita, Thymus capitatus (L.) Hoffmanns & Link.,Thymus vulgaris L.) of 3 m width, in Lanjarón (Granada) on the south flank of the Sierra Nevada of southeast Spain. The erosion plots were located on the hillslope at 35% incline, at 580 m in altitude and with 144 m2 (24 m x 6 m) in area. The area selected for the experiment is the part of the rainfed orchard given entirely with almond (Prunus amygdalus Basch cv. Desmayo Largueta) trees, the planting grid were 6 x 7 m. The cover-crop strips were tested in order to provide information on the erosional response. In the leguminous strips, runoff ranged from 51.5 to 29.5 mm yr-1 and erosion from 7.4 to 1.5 Mg ha-1 yr-1, while under thymes strips, runoff ranged from 7.8 to 1.4 mm yr-1 and erosion from 1.0 to 0.1 Mg ha-1 yr-1. According to the results the strips of thymes reduced the runoff and soil losses with respect to the Lens esculenta. Thus, cultivation of medicinal and aromatic shrub (medicinal, aromatic, culinary and mellipherous), on the slopes of almond orchard can provide a positive impact on the environment while representing an extraincome for local farmers. La degradación del suelo es unos de los mayores problemas ambientales en la región mediterránea (Imeson, 1993), donde las lluvias torrenciales son la principal causa de erosión del suelo, especialmente en áreas de montaña. Este problema es aún más grave en cultivos como el olivo, el almendro y la vid que con frecuencia están en suelos marginales en pendiente. En estos cultivos los marcos de plantación son amplios y se eliminan las malas hierbas para reducir la competencia por el agua de lluvia por lo que una gran proporción del suelo permanece desnudo y muy vulnerable a la erosión. Una solución para el control de la escorrentía en pendientes implica la utilización de cubiertas vegetales (Casermeiro et al., 2004; Duran et al., 2004), que se ha demostrado mejoran las propiedades físicas y químicas del suelo (Bochet et al., 1998; Rey et al., 2004).Las franjas de vegetación en una ladera pueden reducir la erosión disminuyendo la pérdida de agua por escorrentía (Le Bissonnais et al., 2004). Las franjas rompen la trayectoria del flujo del agua, provocando una disminución de su efecto erosivo e incrementando la infiltración.El objetivo principal del presente estudio fue analizar la erosión del suelo y la escorrentía producida en dos parcelas de almendros con cubiertas vegetales de dos tipos: una mezcla de tomillos de la zona (Thymus sp.) y una cubierta de lenteja (Lens esculenta Moench) en una zona de almendros en pendiente representativa de las encontradas en la zona de estudio.

Objetivos: Descripción de un brote nosocomial epidémico de queratoconjuntivitis ocurrido en Madrid (Unidad de Cuidados Intensivos Neonatal) entre los meses de mayo y octubre de 2002 y que afectó al menos a 43 trabajadores del centro; investigación del posible origen y valoración de secuelas. Medidas preventivas para evitar nuevos brotes. Material y métodos: Estudio descriptivo del brote, definición de caso clínico, investigación microbiológica y epidemiológica mediante encuesta. Análisis de la relación entre la tasa de infiltrados subepiteliales 1 año después de la infección y la tasa de uso de corticoide tópico. Resultados: El brote epidémico empezó en el Servicio de Neonatología, encontrándose como focos iniciales unos gemelos prematuros ingresados en dicha unidad. La diseminación se produjo en 24 trabajadores de la unidad, y otros 19 trabajadores de otros Servicios. El diagnóstico microbiológico confirma infección por adenovirus en 10 exudados conjuntivales y una serología, el resto cumple criterios clínicos y epidemiológicos. Aunque es una muestra pequeña y no concluyente, en este estudio los pacientes que usaron corticoide tópico tienen mayor tasa de infiltrados que los que no usaron (p=0,003 en test exacto de Fisher). Conclusiones: La queratoconjuntivitis epidémica es una enfermedad frecuente y en la mayoría banal, pero su alta tasa de contagiosidad y sus posibles secuelas requieren que se preste mayor atención a las medidas preventivas para evitar nuevos brotes. Objective: To describe an epidemic nosocomial outbreak of keratoconjunctivitis affecting at least 43 people in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit in Madrid, between May and October 2002, perform epidemiologic research and determine preventive measures to prevent new outbreaks. Methods: Description of the outbreak, clinical case definition, microbiologic and epidemiologic research through the use of questionnaires. Analysis of the incidence of subepithelial infiltrates 1 year after infection and the use of topical corticosteroid therapy. Results: The epidemic began in the Neonatal Service, with a pair of twins being found as the initial focus. Dissemination occurred to about 24 workers of the unit, and 19 workers from other services. The microbiologic diagnosis confirmed adenovirus in 10 conjunctival smears and one serologically, with the remainder obeying clinical and epidemiological criteria of such infection. Infected patients using topical corticosteroids had a higher incidence of infiltrates 12 months later than those not using such agents (p=0.003 in Fisher test). Conclusions: Epidemic keratoconjunctivitis occurs frequently, is highly contagious and has possible long-term sequelae, necessitating the use of preventive measures to avoid spread and new outbreaks.
