Abstract

During 2006, laboratory studies were conducted to evaluate the pathogenicity of seven isolates of Pandora neoaphidis (Remaudiere & Hennebert) against the cabbage aphid, Brevicoryne brassicae (L.). Two isolates were obtained from the aphids Rhopalosiphum padi (L.) (TEXRP1), and Myzus persicae (Sulzer) (TEXMP1), infesting broccoli (Brassica napus (L.)) in Texcoco, Mexico; the rest of the isolates were obtained from Rhopalosiphum maidis (Fitch) infesting sorghum (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench), in five localities in Tamaulipas, Mexico. The greatest percentages of mortality were caused by isolates RBF, TEXRP1, y RBB, at a rate of 87, 76, y 72%, respectively, 240 hours after the initiation of the treatments. These results show the potential of P. neoaphidis as an agent of biological control against B. brassicae, depending of the place and the origin of the isolate.

ResumenIntroducciónLa esclerosis múltiple es una enfermedad neurodegenerativa común en poblaciones jóvenes en edad reproductiva; el embarazo ha sido motivo de controversia, dada la necesidad de manejo farmacológico, el riesgo de recaídas y la discapacidad resultante. Los estudios son escasos, aunque la mayoría aporta datos confiables.ObjetivosOfrecer al médico una adecuada orientación preconcepcional y durante el embarazo en pacientes con esta enfermedad, así como una adecuada información acerca del uso de medicamentos y sus efectos a corto y largo plazo, tanto en la madre como en el feto.Materiales y métodosPara la revisión de la literatura se estructuró una estrategia de búsqueda utilizando los términos embarazo, esclerosis múltiple, tratamientos inmunomoduladores y efectos teratogénicos (MeSH y no MeSH), los cuales se articularon con operadores booleanos en las siguientes bases de datos: Pubmed, Ebscohost y Embase, filtrando los resultados por artículos de revisión.DiscusiónSe analizan el efecto protector del embarazo en esclerosis múltiple y la administración de vitamina D.ConclusiónAunque no hay evidencia suficiente sobre el efecto nocivo del tratamiento en el recién nacido, se recomienda suspenderlo.AbstractIntroductionMultiple sclerosis is a neurodegenerative disease commonly affecting young adults of fertile age. Pregnancy has been a subject of controversy given that pharmacological management is required, there is a risk of relapses, and it may be disabling. Studies on the topic are scarce, although most of them report reliable data.ObjectiveTo provide the physician with adequate preconception and pregnancy care guidelines for this disease, as well as, adequate information about medications and their effects in the short and long-term, for the mother and the foetus.Materials and methodsA search strategy was created for reviewing the literature, using the terms, pregnancy, multiple sclerosis, immunomodulatory therapies and teratogenic effects (MeSH and not MeSH), which were articulated with Boolean operators in the following databases: Pubmed, Ebscohost and Embase, filtering the results by review article.DiscussionThe protective effects of pregnancy on multiple sclerosis were evaluated, as well as, vitamin D administration.ConclusionAlthough there is not enough evidence on the harmful effects of treatment on the newborn, discontinuing the treatment is recommended.

Abstract

We introduce an alternative factorization of the Hamiltonian of the quantum harmonic oscillator which leads to a two-parameter self-adjoint operator from which the standard harmonic oscillator, the one-parameter oscillators introduced by Mielnik, and the Hermite operator are obtained in certain limits of the parameters. In addition, a single Bernoulli-type parameter factorization which is different of the one introduced by M. A. Reyes, H. C. Rosu, and M. R. Gutierrez, Phys. Lett. Primero, se presentan soluciones exactas para la ecuación FKPP para valores particulares de los parámetros de difusión y reacción. En segundo lugar, se propone una función de prueba que simule las características de la solución general de esta ecuación. Finalmente, se muestra que la obtención de una ecuación de Hamilton-Jacobi para el límite →0 de la transformación hiperbólica usual, x→x/ε y t→ t/ε, está relacionado con el límite semiclá­sico de la mecánica cuántica.

Abstract

By using an alternative factorization, we obtain a self-adjoint oscillator operator of the form L δ = d d x ( p δ ( x ) d d x ) − ( x 2 p δ ( x ) + p δ ( x ) − 1 ) , where p δ ( x ) = 1 + δ e − x 2 , with δ ∈ ( − 1 , ∞ ) an arbitrary real factorization parameter. At positive values of δ, this operator interpolates between the quantum harmonic oscillator Hamiltonian for δ = 0 and a scaled Hermite operator at high values of δ. For the negative values of δ, the eigenfunctions look like deformed quantum mechanical Hermite functions. Possible applications are mentioned.

Abstract

El presente estudio se realizó con el objetivo de modificar la tecnología de producción masiva de Catolaccus grandis y Catolaccus hunteri, himenópteros parasitoides de Anthonomus grandis el picudo del algodonero en Tamaulipas, México en el 2002. Se determinó la eficiencia del papel toalla para el secado de manos, en el sellamiento de cápsulas moldeadas en cera de hidrocarburos y poliolefina (LCHP), donde se confina al huésped, y evaluar la efectividad del gorgojo del garbanzo Callosobruchus maculatus como hospedante facticio para la cría de ambos parasitoides. Hubo producción masiva de C. grandis y C. hunteri utilizando C. maculatus como huésped y el papel toalla fue efectivo para sellar los orificios de las cápsulas moldeadas en LCHP. La producción masiva de C. grandis y C. hunteri mediante C. maculatus, contribuyó a incrementar la seguridad y facilidad del proceso, además de una significativa reducción de costos. El papel toalla en el sellado de los orificios de las cápsulas moldeadas en LCHP, redujo en un 50% por m2 los costos del proceso, sin afectar la eficiencia del parasitismo y emergencia de C. grandis.

Abstract

Using data from FOCUS (E831) experiment at Fermilab, we present a model independent partial-wave analysis of the K{sup -}{pi}{sup +} S-wave amplitude from the decay D{sup +} {yields} K{sup -}{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup +}. The S-wave is a generic complex function to be determined directly from the data fit. The P- and D-waves are parameterized by a sum of Breit-Wigner amplitudes. The measurement of the S-wave amplitude covers the whole elastic range of the K{sup -}{pi}{sup +} system.

Abstract

We present a search for a pentaquark decaying strongly to $\Xi^-\pi^-$ in $\gamma N$ collisions at a center-of-mass energy up to 25 GeV/c^2. Finding no evidence for such a state in the mass range of 1480 MeV/c^2 to 2400 MeV/c^2, we set limits on the yield and on the cross section times branching ratio relative to $\Xi^*(1530)^0$.

Abstract

We study the decay of D s + mesons into final states involving a K S 0 and report the discovery of Cabibbo suppressed decay modes D s + → K S 0 π − π + π + ( 179 ± 36 events) and D s + → K S 0 π + ( 113 ± 26 events). The branching fraction ratios for the new modes are Γ ( D s + → K S 0 π − π + π + ) Γ ( D s + → K S 0 K − π + π + ) = 0.18 ± 0.04 ± 0.05 and Γ ( D s + → K S 0 π + ) Γ ( D s + → K S 0 K + ) = 0.104 ± 0.024 ± 0.014 .

Abstract

Using data collected by the high energy photoproduction experiment FOCUS at Fermilab we performed a Dalitz plot analysis of the Cabibbo favored decay D{sup +} {yields} K{sup -}{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup +}. This study uses 53653 Dalitz-plot events with a signal fraction of {approx} 97%, and represents the highest statistics, most complete Dalitz plot analysis for this channel. Results are presented and discussed using two different formalisms. The first is a simple sum of Breit-Wigner functions with freely fitted masses and widths. It is the model traditionally adopted and serves as comparison with the already published analyses. The second uses a K-matrix approach for the dominant S-wave, in which the parameters are fixed by first fitting K{pi} scattering data and continued to threshold by Chiral Perturbation Theory. We show that the Dalitz plot distribution for this decay is consistent with the assumption of two body dominance of the final state interactions and the description of these interactions is in agreement with other data on the K{pi} final state.

Abstract

Using a large sample of D{sup +} {yields} K{sup -}K{sup +}{pi}{sup +} decays collected by the FOCUS photoproduction experiment at Fermilab, we present the first non-parametric analysis of the K{sup -}{pi}{sup +} amplitudes in D{sup +} {yields} K{sup -}K{sup +}{pi}{sup +} decay. The technique is similar to the technique used for our non-parametric measurements of the D{sup +} {yields} {bar K}*{sup 0} e{sup +}{nu} form factors. Although these results are in rough agreement with those of E687, we observe a wider S-wave contribution for the {bar K}*{sub 0}{sup 0}(1430) contribution than the standard, PDG [1] Breit-Wigner parameterization. We have some weaker evidence for the existence of a new, D-wave component at low values of the K{sup -}{pi}{sup +} mass.

Resumen El estudio fue realizado para determinar los parasitoides que atacan al picudo del algodonero, Anthonomus grandis Boheman (Coleoptera:Curculionidae), en la region algodonera del norte de Tamaulipas, Mexico, y presentar una clave taxonomica de facil uso, para su identificacion. Se colectaron botones florales danados por A. grandis durante 1999, 2000, 2001 y 2002, en parcelas de algodonero mantenidas sin aspersiones de insecticidas. De los especimenes emergidos del material colectado, se logro identificar a los ectoparasitoides larvales Bracon mellitor Fabricius (Hymenoptera:Braconidae), Catolaccus grandis (Burks) y C. hunteri Crawford (Hymenoptera:Pteromalidae), Eurytoma sp. (Hymenoptera: Eurytomidae), y Microdontomerus sp. (Hymenoptera:Torymidae), y al endoparasitoide huevo-larva Urosigalphus anthonomi Crawford (Hymenoptera: Braconidae). Abstract

Gluconeogenesis is an essential pathway in methanogens because they are unable to use exogenous hexoses as carbon source for cell growth. With the aim of understanding the regulatory mechanisms of central carbon metabolism in Methanosarcina acetivorans, the present study investigated gene expression, the activities and metabolic regulation of key enzymes, metabolite contents and fluxes of gluconeogenesis, as well as glycolysis and glycogen synthesis/degradation pathways. Cells were grown with methanol as a carbon source. Key enzymes were kinetically characterized at physiological pH/temperature. Active consumption of methanol during exponential cell growth correlated with significant methanogenesis, gluconeogenic flux and steady glycogen synthesis. After methanol exhaustion, cells reached the stationary growth phase, which correlated with the rise in glycogen consumption and glycolytic flux, decreased methanogenesis, negligible acetate production and an absence of gluconeogenesis. Elevated activities of carbon monoxide dehydrogenase/acetyl-CoA synthetase complex and pyruvate: ferredoxin oxidoreductase suggested the generation of acetyl-CoA and pyruvate for glycogen synthesis. In the early stationary growth phase, the transcript contents and activities of pyruvate phosphate dikinase, fructose 1,6-bisphosphatase and glycogen synthase decreased, whereas those of glycogen phosphorylase, ADP-phosphofructokinase and pyruvate kinase increased. Therefore, glycogen and gluconeogenic metabolites were synthesized when an external carbon source was provided. Once such a carbon source became depleted, glycolysis and methanogenesis fed by glycogen degradation provided the ATP supply. Weak inhibition of key enzymes by metabolites suggested that the pathways evaluated were mainly transcriptionally regulated. Because glycogen metabolism and glycolysis/gluconeogenesis are not present in all methanogens, the overall data suggest that glycogen storage might represent an environmental advantage for methanosarcinales when carbon sources are scarce. Also, the understanding of the central carbohydrate metabolism in methanosarcinales may help to optimize methane production.

El síndrome de apnea hipoapnea obstructiva del sueño es considerado factor de riesgo para accidente cerebrovascular, que es a nivel mundial la segunda causa de muerte y primera de discapacidad. Objetivo: describir la prevalencia de sospecha de SAHOS por escala Epwhort y aumento de circunferencia cervical en pacientes con ACV isquémico en los hospitales de San José e Infantil Universitario de San José, de Bogotá DC, de octubre 2013 a septiembre 30 de 2014. Metodología: estudio descriptivo de corte transversal con población elegida con diagnóstico de ACV isquémico. Resultados: 125 pacientes con edad promedio de 69 años (DE 15.0) y relación hombre/mujer 1:1. Antecedente de SAHOS 1.6% (n: 2). Por Epworth 57% (n: 63/109) tenian sospecha de SAHOS, hombres 60,3%(n: 35). La mediana para Epworth fue 10 (RIQ 7-12). Circunferencia cervical >43 cm en hombres 8,6% (n:5) y en mujeres >40 cm en 28% (n:14). El 30% (19/62) de ACV tenía sospecha de SAHOS por Epworth y circunferencia cervical. Los hombres con Epworth (8-15), tenían circunferencia cervical aumentada 14% (5/35) y las mujeres 51,9% (14/27). La mortalidad intrahospitalaria fue 9,7% (n:12). Conclusión: se encontró que más de la mitad tenía sospecha de SAHOS leve por Epworth. Hubo mayor prevalencia de obesidad cervical en mujeres y una tercera parte tenían sospecha de SAHOS por ambos criterios, lo cual confirma la importancia de explorar de rutina estos indicadores. Abstract

In order to detect Dark Matter (DM), scientists in the Dark Matter In CCDs (DAMIC) Collaboration have set an experimental array of Charge-Coupled Devices (CCDs) in a nickel mine underground, and have developed all analysis tools to discern any known trace of conventional matter from what they expect to find in case a DM particle crosses the CCDs. In order to calibrate the signals from the CCDs, they have also designed experiments to quantify neutron-silicon interactions, assuming that neutrons can mimic DM interactions in the CCDs. Here we present preliminary results from the analysis of data obtained in these experiments.

Abstract

Using data collected by the FOCUS experiment at Fermilab, we present a new measurement of the charm semileptonic branching ratio BR ( D + → ρ 0 μ + ν ) BR ( D + → K ¯ ∗ 0 μ + ν ) . From a sample of 320 ± 44 and 11372 ± 161 D + → ρ 0 μ + ν and D + → K − π + μ + ν events respectively, we find BR ( D + → ρ 0 μ + ν ) BR ( D + → K ¯ ∗ 0 μ + ν ) = 0.041 ± 0.006 ( stat ) ± 0.004 ( syst ) .

We present preliminary results of the search for the pentaquark candidates Θ(1540) and Ξ(1862) using data from Fermilab experiment E690 in the reaction pp → pX at 800 GeV/c. We find that production of pentaquark resonances is heavily suppressed with respect to the production of normal baryon and antibaryon resonances.

Abstract

Using data from the FOCUS (E831) experiment at Fermilab, we present a new measurement of the weak decay-asymmetry parameter α Λ c in Λ c + → Λ π + decay. Comparing particle with antiparticle decays, we obtain the first measurement of the CP violation parameter A ≡ α Λ c + α Λ ¯ c α Λ c − α Λ ¯ c . We obtain α Λ c = − 0.78 ± 0.16 ± 0.19 and A = − 0.07 ± 0.19 ± 0.24 where errors are statistical and systematic.

Abstract

Using a large sample of D + → K − π + μ + ν decays collected by the FOCUS photoproduction experiment at Fermilab, we present the first measurements of the helicity basis form factors free from the assumption of spectroscopic pole dominance. We also present the first information on the form factor that controls the s -wave interference discussed in a previous paper by the FOCUS Collaboration. We find reasonable agreement with the usual assumption of spectroscopic pole dominance and measured form factor ratios.

We review genetic programming principles, their application to FOCUS data samples, and use the method to study the doubly Cabibbo suppressed decay D+ -> K+ pi+ pi- relative to its Cabibbo favored counterpart, D+ -> K- pi+ pi+. We find that this technique is able to improve upon more traditional analysis methods. Abstract

We apply a genetic programming technique to search for the doubly Cabibbo suppressed decays Λ c + → p K + π − and D s + → K + K + π − . We normalize these decays to their Cabibbo favored partners and find BR ( Λ c + → p K + π − ) / BR ( Λ c + → p K − π + ) = ( 0.05 ± 0.26 ± 0.02 ) % and BR ( D s + → K + K + π − ) / BR ( D s + → K − K + π + ) = ( 0.52 ± 0.17 ± 0.11 ) % where the first errors are statistical and the second are systematic. Abstract

Using data from the FOCUS (E831) experiment, we have searched for T violation in charm meson decays using the four-body decay channels $D^0 \to K^-K^+\pi^-\pi^+$, $D^+ \to K^0_SK^+\pi^-\pi^+$, and $D^+_s \to K^0_SK^+\pi^-\pi^+$. The T violation asymmetry is obtained using triple-product correlations and assuming the validity of the CPT theorem. We find the asymmetry values to be $A_Tviol (D^0) = 0.010 \pm 0.057(stat.) \pm 0.037(syst.)$, $A_Tviol (D^+) = 0.023 \pm 0.062(stat.) \pm 0.022(syst.)$, and $A_Tviol (D^+_s) = -0.036 \pm 0.067(stat.) \pm 0.023(syst.)$. Each measurement is consistent with no T violation. New measurements of the CP asymmetries for some of these decay modes are also presented., Comment: 17 pages,6 figures,submitted to Phys.Lett.B

Abstract

Using data from the FOCUS experiment (FNAL–E831), we study the decay of Λ c + baryons into final states containing a Λ hyperon. The branching fractions of Λ c + into Λ π + , Λ π + π + π − and Λ K ¯ 0 K + relative to that into p K − π + are measured to be 0.217 ± 0.013 ± 0.020 , 0.508 ± 0.024 ± 0.024 and 0.142 ± 0.018 ± 0.022 , respectively. We also report new measurements of Γ ( Λ c + → Σ 0 π + ) Γ ( Λ c + → Λ π + ) = 1.09 ± 0.11 ± 0.19 , Γ ( Λ c + → Σ 0 π + π + π − ) Γ ( Λ c + → Λ π + π + π − ) = 0.26 ± 0.06 ± 0.09 and Γ ( Λ c + → Ξ ( 1690 ) 0 ( Λ K ¯ 0 ) K + ) Γ ( Λ c + → Λ K ¯ 0 K + ) = 0.32 ± 0.10 ± 0.04 . Further, an analysis of the subresonant structure for the Λ c + → Λ π + π + π − decay mode is presented.

Abstract

Using data from the FOCUS (E831) experiment at Fermilab, the authors present a new measurement for the Cabibbo-suppressed decay mode D{sup 0} {yields} K{sup +}K{sup -}{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -}. They measure: {Lambda}(D{sup 0} {yields} K{sup +}K{sup -}{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -})/{Lambda}(D{sup 0} {yields} K{sup -}{pi}{sup -}{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup +}) = 0.0295 {+-} 0.0011 {+-} 0.0008. An amplitude analysis has been performed in order to determine the resonant substructure of this decay mode. The dominant components are the decays D{sup 0} {yields} K{sub 1}(1270){sup +} K{sup -}, D{sup 0} {yields} K{sub 1}(1400){sup +}K{sup -} and D{sup 0} {yields} {rho}(770){sup 0}{phi}(1020).

Abstract

Using data collected by the fixed target Fermilab experiment FOCUS, we present several first measurements for the semileptonic decay D0→K¯0π−μ+ν. Using a model that includes a K¯0π− s-wave component, we measure the form factor ratios to be rv=1.71±0.68±0.34 and r2=0.91±0.37±0.10 and the s-wave amplitude to be A=0.35±0.22±0.05GeV−1. Finally, we measure the vector semileptonic branching ratio Γ(D0→K*(892)−μ+ν)Γ(D0→K¯0π−π+)=0.337±0.034±0.013.

We present evidence for two Cabibbo favored decay modes, D 0 → K S 0 K S 0 K − π + and D 0 → K S 0 K S 0 K + π − , and measure their combined branching fraction relative to D 0 → K ¯ 0 π + π − to be Γ ( D 0 → K S 0 K S 0 K ± π ∓ ) Γ ( D 0 → K ¯ 0 π + π − ) = 0.0106 ± 0.0019 ± 0.0010 . Further, we report new measurements of Γ ( D 0 → K S 0 K S 0 K S 0 ) Γ ( D 0 → K ¯ 0 π + π − ) = 0.0179 ± 0.0027 ± 0.0026 , Γ ( D 0 → K 0 K ¯ 0 ) Γ ( D 0 → K ¯ 0 π + π − ) = 0.0144 ± 0.0032 ± 0.0016 , and Γ ( D 0 → K S 0 K S 0 π + π − ) Γ ( D 0 → K ¯ 0 π + π − ) = 0.0208 ± 0.0035 ± 0.0021 where the first error is statistical and the second is systematic.

Abstract

We present a new measurement of the branching ratio of the Cabibbo suppressed decay D 0 → π − μ + ν relative to the Cabibbo favored decay D 0 → K − μ + ν and an improved measurement of the ratio | f + π ( 0 ) / f + K ( 0 ) | . Our results are 0.074 ± 0.008 ± 0.007 for the branching ratio and 0.85 ± 0.04 ± 0.04 ± 0.01 for the form factor ratio, respectively.

Abstract

Using a large sample of D 0 → K − μ + ν and D 0 → π − μ + ν decays collected by the FOCUS photoproduction experiment at Fermilab, we present new measurements of the q 2 dependence for the f + ( q 2 ) form factor. These measured f + ( q 2 ) form factors are fit to common parameterizations such as the pole dominance form and compared to recent unquenched Lattice QCD calculations. We find m pole = 1.93 ± 0.05 ± 0.03 GeV / c 2 for D 0 → K − μ + ν and m pole = 1.91 −0.15 +0.30 ± 0.07 GeV / c 2 for D 0 → π − μ + ν and f − ( K ) ( 0 ) / f + ( K ) ( 0 ) = − 1.7 −1.4 +1.5 ± 0.3 .

Abstract

Using a high statistics sample of photo-produced charm particles from the FOCUS experiment at Fermilab, we report on the measurement of the ratio of semileptonic rates Γ ( D + → K π μ + ν μ ) / Γ ( D + → K ¯ 0 μ + ν μ ) = 0.625 ± 0.045 ± 0.034 . Allowing for the Kπ S-wave interference measured in [J.M. Link, et al., FOCUS Collaboration, Phys. Lett. B 544 (2002) 89], we extract the vector to pseudoscalar ratio Γ ( D + → K ¯ * 0 μ + ν μ ) / Γ ( D + → K ¯ 0 μ + ν μ ) = 0.594 ± 0.043 ± 0.033 and the ratio Γ ( D + → K ¯ 0 μ + ν μ ) / Γ ( D + → K − π + π + ) = 1.019 ± 0.076 ± 0.065 . Our results show a lower ratio for Γ ( D → K * l ν ) / Γ ( D → K l ν ) than has been reported recently and indicate the current world average branching fractions for the decays D + → K ¯ 0 ( μ + , e + ) ν μ , e are low. Using the world average B ( D + → K − π + π + ) [K. Hagiwara, et al., Particle Data Group Collaboration, Phys. Rev. D 66 (2002) 010001, and 2003 partial update for edition 2004 ( http://pdg.lbl.gov )] we extract B ( D + → K ¯ 0 μ + ν ) = ( 9.27 ± 0.69 ± 0.59 ± 0.61 ) % .

Abstract

Λ 0 polarization from pp → p diffracted Λ 0 K + at 800 GeV / c in the average depends linearly on Λ 0 K + invariant mass: Λ 0 polarization is 0.635 ± 0.036 at 1.64 GeV , consistent with zero at ≈ 2.195 GeV , and −0.586 ± 0.072 at 3.200 GeV . The origin of this Λ 0 polarization is, probably, the interference of at least two Λ 0 K + resonances, created from the excitation of the target proton, due to the diffracted proton transfered momentum.

Abstract

Using a large sample of charm semileptonic decays collected by the FOCUS photoproduction experiment at Fermilab, we present evidence for a small, even spin K−π+ amplitude that interferes with the dominant K ∗0 component in the D+→K−π+μ+ν final state. Although this interference significantly distorts the D+→K−π+μ+ν decay angular distributions, the new amplitude creates only a very small distortion to the observed kaon pion mass distribution when integrated over the other kinematic variables describing the decay. Our data can be described by K ∗0 interference with either a constant amplitude or broad spin zero resonance.

Abstract

In this Letter we present a measurement of the natural widths of Σ c 0 and Σ c ++ . Using data from the FOCUS experiment, we find Γ ( Σ c 0 )=1.55 +0.41 −0.37 ±0.38 MeV/ c 2 and Γ ( Σ c ++ )=2.05 +0.41 −0.38 ±0.38 MeV/ c 2 . The first errors are statistical, the second systematic. These results are obtained with a sample of 913 Σ c 0 →Λ c + π − decays and 1110 Σ c ++ →Λ c + π + decays. These results are compared with recent theoretical predictions.

Abstract

Since 2008, a wasp species has been observed to predate nymphs of Diaphorina citri Kuwayama (Hemiptera: Psyllidae) (Fig. 1), the Asian citrus psyllid, one of the vectors of the bacterial patho gen Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus, causal agent of the deadly citrus greening disease (Xuet al. 1998; Gamier & Bove 2000). The wasp species was identified as the Mexican honey wasp, Brachygastra mellifica (Say 1837) (Vespidae: Polistinae) by M. Buck. This wasp was first ob served attacking D. citri nymphs in 2008 in sweet orange, Citrus x sinensis (L.) Osbeck (Rutaceae), and lemon, Citrus x limon (L.) Burm. f. (Ruta ceae), groves, planted 3 to 5 yr ago in Rio Bravo, Tamaulipas, Mexico (25°56'39.12"N, 98°07'3.9"W, 28. 2 elev.). We have been observing B. mellifica since 2008 at Rio Bravo, and have found that its predatory activity is greatest during Jul through Sep when a high population of D. citri nymphs is present on new flush. Abstract

Using a large sample of photoproduced charm mesons from the FOCUS experiment at Fermilab (FNAL-E831), we observe the decay D0-->K+pi- with a signal yield of 149+/-31 events compared to a similarly cut sample consisting of 36 760+/-195 D0-->K-pi+ events. We use the observed ratio of D0-->K+pi- to D0-->K-pi+ (0.404+/-0.085+/-0.025)% to obtain a relationship between the D0 mixing and doubly Cabibbo suppressed decay parameters.

Presentamos una sinopsis de las 17 especies del género Pristimantis registradas en la Reserva Ecológica Río Zuñag. Esta reserva se ubica en la cuenca alta del río Pastaza, en la Cordillera Oriental de los Andes de Ecuador, entre 1400 y 2200 m de elevación. Incluimos la descripción de una nueva especie de Pristimantis caracterizada por su coloración en vida (dorso amarillo ámbar con marcas café-rojizas, y manchas anaranjadas bordeadas de amarillo en las ingles y en las superficies posteriores de los muslos) y la presencia de dos tubérculos pequeños sobre el párpado superior y un tubérculo interorbital pequeño. Abstract

Using a high statistics sample of photoproduced charmed particles from the FOCUS experiment at Fermilab (FNAL-E831), we measure the mass splittings of the charmed baryons Σ c 0 and Σ c ++ . We find M(Σ c 0 −Λ c + ) =167.38 ±0.21 ±0.13 MeV /c 2 and M(Σ c ++ −Λ c + ) =167.35 ±0.19 ±0.12 MeV /c 2 with samples of 362±36 and 461±39 events, respectively. We measure the isospin mass splitting M(Σ c ++ −Σ c 0 ) to be −0.03 ±0.28 ±0.11 MeV /c 2 . The first errors are statistical and the second are systematic.

Results are presented from an analysis of a large sample of centrally produced mesons in the reaction $\mathrm{pp}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{p}_{\mathrm{slow}}({K}_{S}^{0}{K}^{\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{\mp}}){p}_{\mathrm{fast}}$ with $800\mathrm{GeV}/c$ protons incident on liquid hydrogen. Two resonances dominate the final state, the ${f}_{1}(1285)$, decaying into ${a}_{0}\ensuremath{\pi}$, and the ${f}_{1}(1420)$, decaying into ${K}^{*}K$. Both mesons are produced with equal amounts of $|{J}_{z}{|}^{\ensuremath{\eta}}{\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}1}^{\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}}$, and no ${J}_{z}\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}0$.

95. Evidence for the Presence of Aphids (Hemiptera: Aphididae) in México during Pre-colombian Times

Abstract

At the National Museum of Anthropology and History in Mexico City, in a gallery dedicated to the civilization of western Mexico, a ceramic figure that resembles an insect was found among other figures representing birds and mammals. The figure that resembles an insect is 22 to 25 cm long and 20 to 25 cm tall. It was found inside a “tumba de tiro”, a kind of grave, of the late Preclassic and Early Classic Period at Colima, Mexico (Valdez 1994). The figure is estimated to have been created between 200 B.C. and 600 A.C. The shape of the figure seems to come from an observation in situ, more than the sole imagination of the author. The figure is morphologically similar to an apterous female aphid (Hemiptera: Aphididae) parasitized by a hymenopteran insect. The characteristics of an apterous female aphid (Borror et al. 1989) that are coincident with those in the figure are: absence of wings, pear-shaped body, and cornicles on the back (Fig. 1). The thorax and abdomen are not differentiated, as they are in winged aphids, because both body parts are similar in color and consistency (Pena 1992). When observing the shape and inclination of the figure, the front part appears to be the aphid head with mouthparts at the inferior level, as though in a feeding position. The details of the thorax-abdomen in the figure fit the description of aphids parasitized by hymenopterous Aphelinidae and Aphidiinae (Braconidae), as indicated by Knutson et al. (1993) and Pope and Tollefson (1998). Parasitized aphids acquire a golden color and remain attached to the green vegetal tissue substrate on which they were feeding (Godfray 1994, Saunderland et al. 2005). Antennae are not found on the ceramic figure. The antennae of the aphid model for the ceramic figure might have been overlooked because of lack of a magnifying instrument such as a microscope that was not available until the second half of the 17 Century (Kruif 1982), at least 1,000 years after the figure was created. Abstract

Results are presented from a partial wave analysis of a sample of centrally produced mesons in the reaction $\mathrm{pp}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{p}_{\mathrm{slow}}({K}_{S}{K}_{S}){p}_{\mathrm{fast}}$, with 800 GeV/c protons incident on a liquid hydrogen target. The meson system is found to be predominantly $S$ wave in the mass range between ${K}_{S}{K}_{S}$ threshold and $1.55\mathrm{GeV}{/c}^{2}$. The ${f}_{0}(1500)$ is observed in this region. Above $1.55\mathrm{GeV}{/c}^{2}$ two solutions are possible, one with mainly $S$ wave and another with mainly $D$ wave. This ambiguity prevents a unique determination of the spin of the ${f}_{J}(1710)$ meson.

The analysis is performed using proton-proton collision datasets recorded by the CMS detector at the LHC. Events were collected at center-of-mass energies of 7 TeV and 8 TeV, corresponding to integrated luminosities of 5.0 fb(-1) and 19.6 fb(-1), respectively. The selected events are required to have opposite-sign electron or muon pairs. No excess above standard model predictions has been found in the 120-160 GeV mass range and the first limits on the Higgs boson production cross section times the H -> Z gamma branching fraction at the LHC have been derived. The observed at 95% confidence level limits are between about 4 and 25 times the standard model cross section times the branching fraction. For a standard model Higgs boson mass of 125 GeV the expected limit at the 95% confidence level is 10 and the observed limit is 9.5. Models predicting the Higgs boson production cross section times the H -> Z gamma branching fraction to be larger than one order of magnitude of the standard model prediction are excluded for most of the 125-157 GeV mass range. Abstract

Over 7000 events containing a fully reconstructed D D pair have been extracted from data recorded by the FOCUS photoproduction experiment at Fermilab. Preliminary results from a study of correlations between D and D mesons are presented. Correlations are used to study perturbative QCD predictions and investigate non-perturbative effects. We also present a preliminary result on the production of Ψ(3770).
