Abstract

The Arsenal of Palermo is located towards the end of Via Cristoforo Colombo and borders the Fincantieri Shipyard and the fabulous villa of Marquis De Gregorio. The vessels of the Royal Navy and private shipbuilders were built in the area behind the building. Today this part of the city is a true open-air museum, whose unique value deserves broader appreciation. In the area around the Arsenal stand Villa De Gregorio, the Florio shipyards, the English Cemetery, Montalbo Palace and many other buildings of great interest. The Arsenal was built between 1621 and 1630 on the plans of the architect Mariano Smiriglio, a great figure in Italian Mannerism. The two storey building has a regular form; in the upper part of the façade there is the Bourbon coat of arms bearing an eagle’s head and the following inscription: Philippi IV His pan, utriusque siciliae regis III, auspiciis augustis, navale armamentarium inchoatum, perfectum MDCXXX. The Arsenal of Palermo was the place where the xebecs and galleys that helped in the fight against the Barbary pirates in the Mediterranean Sea were built. In fact, Sicilian ships played a leading role in many sea battles. Today the only shipyard in Sicily is the one in Palermo and hence it is the only testimony of the Sicilian maritime legacy with regard to the construction of warships and merchant ships., peer-reviewed

80. [Osteochondroma. Report of a case with atypical localization and symptomatology]

Abstract

Osteochondroma, the most common benign bone tumor, represents 10-15% of all bone tumors. It can occur frequently as solitary osteocartilagineous exostosis or rarely as hereditary multiple lesions. The most common sites of occurrence are long bones of the lower arm (50%), usually the lower end of the femur and upper end of the tibia. However, involvement of the small hand and foot bones occurs in 10% of cases, pelvis in 5%, scapulae in 4%, and spine in 2%. Symptoms are not very specific. The authors present an atypical case of osteochondroma.

Abstract

This retrospective study evaluates the results obtained in five Italian departments of traumatology in the treatment of peritrochanteric (pertrochanteric and subtrochanteric) fractures by the intramedullary hip screw (IMHS; SmithNephew Richards, Memphis, TN, USA) nail. One thousand two hundred and seventy-three patients were treated with the IMHS nail between March 1992 and February 2000. The results of these operations were evaluated clinically and radiological in 981 patients. The 90.3% of patients could walk unaided or with simple support. Because of the low complication rate requiring re-operation (postoperative shaft fractures, screw penetrated the acetabulum, cut out and non-union) (1.7%), we think that this device is an advance in the treatment of peritrochanteric fractures.
