51. Detectability of Cosmic Topology in Generalized Chaplygin Gas Models

Abstract

If the spatial section of the universe is multiply connected, repeated images or patterns are expected to be detected observationally. However, due to the finite distance to the last scattering surface, such pattern repetitions could be unobservable. This raises the question of whether a given cosmic topology is detectable, depending on the values of the parameters of the cosmological model. We study how detectability is affected by the choice of the model itself for the matter-energy content of the universe, focusing our attention on the generalized Chaplygin gas (GCG) model for dark matter and dark energy unification, and investigate how the detectability of cosmic topology depends on the GCG parameters. We determine to what extent a number of topologies are detectable for the current observational bounds on these parameters. It emerges from our results that the choice of GCG as an alternative to the $\Lambda$CDM matter-energy content model has an impact on the detectability of cosmic topology., Comment: Submitted to A&A

52. Extended Born-Infeld Dynamics and Cosmology

Abstract

We introduce an extension of the Born-Infeld action for a scalar field and show that it can act as unifying-dark-matter, providing an explanation for both structure formation and the accelerated expansion of the universe. We investigate the cosmological dynamics of this theory in a particular case, referred as the "Milne-Born-Infeld" (MBI) Lagrangian. We show that this model, whose equation of state has effectively a single free parameter, is consistent with recent type Ia supernovae data, providing a fit as good as for the $\Lambda$CDM model with the same number of degrees of freedom. Furthermore, this parameter is tightly constrained by current data, making the model easily testable with other observables. Contrary to previous candidates for unifying-dark-matter, the sound velocity of the MBI model is vanishing both close to the dark matter state as well as near the cosmological constant state. This could avoid the problems on the matter power spectrum that were present in previous adiabatic dark-matter/dark-energy unification models. 53. Matter Power Spectrum for Convex Quartessence

Abstract

The possibility of unifying dark-matter and dark-energy has recently attracted considerable interest. In this so called quartessence scenario, a single component is responsible for both the clustering of matter and the accelerated expansion of the universe. A model archetype for such scenario is provided by the Chaplygin gas. Although this model is in agreement with the data on the expansion history, problems arise in the power spectrum of density fluctuations for adiabatic perturbations. In this contribution we consider other quartessence models and confirm that instabilities and oscillations in the matter power spectrum are a characteristic of more generic quartessence models, namely those with a convex equation of state. We show that, as in the Chaplygin case, this kind of problem can be solved by considering intrinsic non-adiabatic perturbations such that, as an initial condition, the perturbed fluid is gradient pressure free. Abstract

Quartessence is one of the alternatives to Lambda-CDM that has lately attracted considerable interest. According to this unifying dark matter/energy scenario, the Universe evolved from an early non-relativistic matter-dominated phase to a more recent accelerated expansion phase, driven by a single fluid component. Recently, it has been shown that some problems of the quartessence model, such as the existence of instabilities and oscillations in the matter power spectrum, can be avoided if a specific type of intrinsic entropy perturbation is considered. In the present article we explore the role of skewness in constraining this non-adiabatic scenario. We show that non-adiabatic quartessence and quintessence have different signatures for the skewness of the density distribution on large scales and suggest that this quantity might prove helpful to break possible degeneracies between them., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication as a Rapid Communication in Physical Review D

Abstract

We derive the special and general relativistic hydrodynamic equations of motion for ideal fluids from a variational principle. Our approach allows to find approximate solutions, whenever physically motivated trial functions can be used. Illustrating this, a Rayleigh-Plesset type equation for the relativistic motion of a spherical (QGP) droplet is obtained. Abstract

Nuclear reactors are uniquely powerful, abundant, and flavor-pure sources of antineutrinos that continue to play a vital role in the US neutrino physics program. The US reactor antineutrino physics community is a diverse interest group encompassing many detection technologies and many particle physics topics, including Standard Model and short-baseline oscillations, BSM physics searches, and reactor flux and spectrum modeling. The community's aims offer strong complimentary with numerous aspects of the wider US neutrino program and have direct relevance to most of the topical sub-groups composing the Snowmass 2021 Neutrino Frontier. Reactor neutrino experiments also have a direct societal impact and have become a strong workforce and technology development pipeline for DOE National Laboratories and universities. This white paper, prepared as a submission to the Snowmass 2021 community organizing exercise, will survey the state of the reactor antineutrino physics field and summarize the ways in which current and future reactor antineutrino experiments can play a critical role in advancing the field of particle physics in the next decade., Contribution to Snowmass 2021

Abstract

Mass calibration uncertainty is the largest systematic effect for using clustersof galaxies to constrain cosmological parameters. We present weak lensing mass measurements from the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope Stripe 82 Survey for galaxy clusters selected through their high signal-to-noise thermal Sunyaev-Zeldovich (tSZ) signal measured with the Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT). For a sample of 9 ACT clusters with a tSZ signal-to-noise greater than five, the average weak lensing mass is (4.8 plus or minus 0.8) times 10 (sup 14) solar mass, consistent with the tSZ mass estimate of (4.7 plus or minus 1.0) times 10 (sup 14) solar mass, which assumes a universal pressure profile for the cluster gas. Our results are consistent with previous weak-lensing measurements of tSZ-detected clusters from the Planck satellite. When comparing our results, we estimate the Eddington bias correction for the sample intersection of Planck and weak-lensing clusters which was previously excluded.

Abstract

The Southern Photometric Local Universe Survey (S-PLUS) is imaging similar to 9300 deg(2) of the celestial sphere in 12 optical bands using a dedicated 0.8mrobotic telescope, the T80-South, at the Cerro Tololo Inter-american Observatory, Chile. The telescope is equipped with a 9.2k x 9.2k e2v detector with 10 mu m pixels, resulting in a field of view of 2 deg(2) with a plate scale of 0.55 arcsec pixel-1. The survey consists of four main subfields, which include two non-contiguous fields at high Galactic latitudes (vertical bar b vertical bar > 30 degrees, 8000 deg(2)) and two areas of the Galactic Disc and Bulge (for an additional 1300 deg(2)). S-PLUS uses the Javalambre 12-band magnitude system, which includes the 5 ugriz broad-band filters and 7 narrow-band filters centred on prominent stellar spectral features: the Balmer jump/[OII], Ca H + K, Hd, G band, Mg b triplet, H alpha, and the Ca triplet. S-PLUS delivers accurate photometric redshifts (dz /(1 + z) = 0.02 or better) for galaxies with r < 19.7 AB mag and z < 0.4, thus producing a 3D map of the local Universe over a volume of more than 1 (Gpc/h)(3). The final S-PLUS catalogue will also enable the study of star formation and stellar populations in and around the Milky Way and nearby galaxies, as well as searches for quasars, variable sources, and low-metallicity stars. In this paper we introduce the main characteristics of the survey, illustrated with science verification data highlighting the unique capabilities of S-PLUS. Abstract

In Montero-Dorta et al., we show that luminous red galaxies (LRGs) from the SDSS-III Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS) at z ~ 0.55 can be divided into two groups based on their star formation histories. So-called fast-growing LRGs assemble 80 per cent of their stellar mass at z ~ 5, whereas slow-growing LRGs reach the same evolutionary state at z ~ 1.5. We further demonstrate that these two subpopulations present significantly different clustering properties on scales of ~1-30 Mpc. Here, we measure the mean halo mass of each subsample using the galaxy-galaxy lensing technique, in the ~190 deg overlap of the LRG catalogue and the CS82 and CFHTLenS shear catalogues. We show that fast- and slow-growing LRGs have similar lensing profiles, which implies that they live in haloes of similar mass: log(M /hM) = 12.85 and log(M /hM) = 12.92 . This result, combined with the clustering difference, suggests the existence of galaxy assembly bias, although the effect is too subtle to be definitively proven, given the errors on our current weak-lensing measurement. Abstract

We report the discovery of a gravitationally lensed hyperluminous infrared galaxy (intrinsic LIR≈1013 L⊙) with strong radio emission (intrinsic L1.4 GHz≈1025WHz−1) at z=2.553. The source was identified in the citizen science project SpaceWarpsthrough the visual inspection of tens of thousands of iJKs colour composite images of luminous red galaxies (LRGs), groups and clusters of galaxies and quasars. Appearing as a partial Einstein ring (re≈3 arcsec) around an LRG at z=0.2, the galaxy is extremely bright in the sub-millimetre for a cosmological source, with the thermal dust emission approaching 1 Jy at peak. The redshift of the lensed galaxy is determined through the detection of the CO(3→2) molecular emission line with the Large Millimetre Telescope's Redshift Search Receiver and through [O iii] and Hα line detections in the near-infrared from Subaru/Infrared Camera and Spectrograph. We have resolved the radio emission with high-resolution (300-400 mas) eMERLIN L-band and Very Large Array C-band imaging. These observations are used in combination with the near-infrared imaging to construct a lens model, which indicates a lensing magnification of μ≈10. Abstract

We present detailed modelling of the recently discovered, quadruply lensed quasar J0408−5354, with the aim of interpreting its remarkable configuration: besides three quasar images (A,B,D) around the main deflector (G1), a fourth image (C) is significantly reddened and dimmed by a perturber (G2) which is not detected in the Dark Energy Survey imaging data. From lens models incorporating (dust-corrected) flux ratios, we find a perturber Einstein radius 0.04 arcsec ≲ RE, G2 ≲ 0.2 arcsec and enclosed mass Mp(RE, G2) ≲ 1.0 × 1010 M⊙. The main deflector has stellar mass log10(M⋆/M⊙)=11.49+0.46−0.32 , a projected mass Mp(RE, G1) ≈ 6 × 1011 M⊙ within its Einstein radius RE, G1 = (1.85 ± 0.15) arcsec and predicted velocity dispersion 267–280 km s−1. Follow-up images from a companion monitoring campaign show additional components, including a candidate second source at a redshift between the quasar and G1. Models with free perturbers, and dust-corrected and delay-corrected flux ratios, are also explored. The predicted time-delays (ΔtAB = (135.0 ± 12.6) d, ΔtBD = (21.0 ± 3.5) d) roughly agree with those measured, but better imaging is required for proper modelling and comparison. We also discuss some lessons learnt from J0408−5354 on lensed quasar finding strategies, due to its chromaticity and morphology.

Abstract

We report the discovery of eight new Milky Way companions in ~1,800 deg^2 of optical imaging data collected during the first year of the Dark Energy Survey (DES). Each system is identified as a statistically significant over-density of individual stars consistent with the expected isochrone and luminosity function of an old and metal-poor stellar population. The objects span a wide range of absolute magnitudes (M_V from -2.2 mag to -7.4 mag), physical sizes (10 pc to 170 pc), and heliocentric distances (30 kpc to 330 kpc). Based on the low surface brightnesses, large physical sizes, and/or large Galactocentric distances of these objects, several are likely to be new ultra-faint satellite galaxies of the Milky Way and/or Magellanic Clouds. We introduce a likelihood-based algorithm to search for and characterize stellar over-densities, as well as identify stars with high satellite membership probabilities. We also present completeness estimates for detecting ultra-faint galaxies of varying luminosities, sizes, and heliocentric distances in the first-year DES data., 33 pages, 12 figures, 3 tables. Abstract

We describe an algorithm for identifying point-source transients and moving objects on reference-subtracted optical images containing artifacts of processing and instrumentation. The algorithm makes use of the supervised machine learning technique known as Random Forest. We present results from its use in the Dark Energy Survey Supernova program (DES-SN), where it was trained using a sample of 898,963 signal and background events generated by the transient detection pipeline. After reprocessing the data collected during the first DES-SN observing season (2013 September through 2014 February) using the algorithm, the number of transient candidates eligible for human scanning decreased by a factor of 13.4, while only 1.0% of the artificial Type Ia supernovae (SNe) injected into search images to monitor survey efficiency were lost, most of which were very faint events. Here we characterize the algorithm's performance in detail, and we discuss how it can inform pipeline design decisions for future time-domain imaging surveys, such as the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope and the Zwicky Transient Facility. Abstract

Due to their proximity, high dark-matter (DM) content, and apparent absence of non-thermal processes, Milky Way dwarf spheroidal satellite galaxies (dSphs) are excellent targets for the indirect detection of DM. Recently, eight new dSph candidates were discovered using the first year of data from the Dark Energy Survey (DES). We searched for gamma-ray emission coincident with the positions of these new objects in six years of Fermi Large Area Telescope data. We found no significant excesses of gamma-ray emission. Under the assumption that the DES candidates are dSphs with DM halo properties similar to the known dSphs, we computed individual and combined limits on the velocity-averaged DM annihilation cross section for these new targets. If the estimated DM content of these dSph candidates is confirmed, they will constrain the annihilation cross section to lie below the thermal relic cross section for DM particles with masses less than or similar to 20 GeV annihilating via the b (b) over bar or pi(+)pi(-) channels.

For low values of the characteristic convergence ($\kappa_s \ll 1$) of this model - corresponding to galaxy and galaxy group mass scales - a high numerical precision is required in order to accurately compute several quantities in the strong lensing regime. An alternative for fast and accurate computations is to derive analytic approximations in this limit. In this work we obtain analytic solutions for several lensing quantities for elliptical (ENFW) and pseudo-elliptical (PNFW) NFW lens models on the typical scales where gravitational arcs are expected to be formed, in the $\kappa_s \ll 1$ limit, establishing their domain of validity. We derive analytic solutions for the convergence and shear for these models, obtaining explicit expressions for the iso-convergence contours and constant distortion curves (including the tangential critical curve). We also compute the deformation cross section, which is given in closed form for the circular NFW model and in terms of a one-dimensional integral for the elliptical ones. In addition, we provide a simple expression for the ellipticity of the iso-convergence contours of the pseudo-elliptical models and the connection of characteristic convergences among the PNFW and ENFW models. We conclude that the set of solutions derived here is generally accurate for $\kappa_s \lesssim 0.1$. For low ellipticities, values up to $\kappa_s \simeq 0.18$ are allowed. On the other hand, the mapping between PNFW and the ENFW models is valid up to $\kappa_s \simeq 0.4$. The solutions derived in this work can be used to speed up numerical codes and ensure their accuracy in the low $\kappa_s$ regime, including applications to arc statistics and other strong lensing observables. Abstract

Models with elliptical potentials (pseudo-elliptical) are often used in gravitational lensing applications. Nevertheless, they generally lead to nonphysical mass distributions in some regions. In this paper we revisit the physical limitations of the pseudo-elliptical Navarro-Frenk-White (PNFW) model, for a broad range of the potential ellipticity parameter \epsilon\ and characteristic convergence \kappa_s focusing on the behavior of the mass distribution close to the tangential critical curve, where tangential arcs are expected to be formed. We investigate the shape of the mass distribution on this region and the presence of negative convergence. We obtain a mapping from the PNFW to the NFW model with elliptical mass distribution (ENFW) and provide fitting formulae for connecting the parameters of both models. We compare the arc cross section for these models using the "infinitesimal circular source approximation". We find that the PNFW model is well-suited to model an elliptical mass distribution on a larger \epsilon\ - \kappa_s parameter space than previously expected. In particular values as large as \epsilon\ ~ 0.65 are allowed for small \kappa_s. However, if we require the PNFW model to reproduce the arc cross section of the ENFW well, the ellipticity is more restricted. We also find that the negative convergence regions occur far from the arc formation region and should therefore not be a problem for studies with gravitational arcs. The determination of a domain of validity for the PNFW model and the mapping to ENFW models could have implications for the use of PNFW models for the inverse modeling of lenses and for fast arc simulations., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A; 11 pages, 8 figures
