To achieve atomic-level characterization of the diamond (001) surface, persistent efforts have been made over the past few decades. The motivation behind the pursuit extends beyond investigating surface defects and adsorbates; it also involves unraveling the mystery of the smooth growth of diamond. However, the inherently low conductivity and the short C-C bonds render atomic resolution imaging exceptionally challenging. Here, we successfully overcame these challenges by employing non-contact atomic force microscopy with reactive Si tips. Atomic resolution imaging was achieved even at room temperature. With density-functional-theory calculations, we clarified that the critical factors for atomic resolution are in the formation of tilted C-Si bonds between scanning probes and surfaces, along with reordering of the surface C-C dimers. Implications of the findings extend beyond the realm of surface characterization. The present atomic-resolution microscopies drive future advancements in diamond technologies by providing avenues for identifying dopants and constructing artificial nanostructures.

Computer Science - Robotics - Abstract
Human can not only support their body during standing or walking, but also support them by hand, so that they can dangle a bar and others. But most humanoid robots support their body only in the foot and they use their hand just to manipulate objects because their hands are too weak to support their body. Strong hands are supposed to enable humanoid robots to act in much broader scene. Therefore, we developed new life-size five-fingered hand that can support the body of life-size humanoid robot. It is tendon-driven and underactuated hand and actuators in forearms produce large gripping force. This hand has flexible joints using machined springs, which can be designed integrally with the attachment. Thus, it has both structural strength and impact resistance in spite of small size. As other characteristics, this hand has force sensors to measure external force and the fingers can be flexed along objects though the number of actuators to flex fingers is less than that of fingers. We installed the developed hand on musculoskeletal humanoid "Kengoro" and achieved two self-weight supporting motions: push-up motion and dangling motion., Comment: accepted at IROS2017

Computer Science - Robotics - Abstract
Human hands can not only grasp objects of various shape and size and manipulate them in hands but also exert such a large gripping force that they can support the body in the situations such as dangling a bar and climbing a ladder. On the other hand, it is difficult for most robot hands to manage both. Therefore in this paper we developed the hand which can grasp various objects and exert large gripping force. To develop such hand, we focused on the thumb CM joint with wide range of motion and the MP joints of four fingers with the DOF of abduction and adduction. Based on the hand with large gripping force and flexibility using machined spring, we applied above mentioned joint mechanism to the hand. The thumb CM joint has wide range of motion because of the combination of three machined springs and MP joints of four fingers have variable rigidity mechanism instead of driving each joint independently in order to move joint in limited space and by limited actuators. Using the developed hand, we achieved the grasping of various objects, supporting a large load and several motions with an arm., Comment: accepted at IROS2018

Computer Science - Multiagent Systems ,Computer Science - Robotics - Abstract
Managing delivery deadlines in automated warehouses and factories is crucial for maintaining customer satisfaction and ensuring seamless production. This study introduces the problem of online multi-agent pickup and delivery with task deadlines (MAPD-D), an advanced variant of the online MAPD problem incorporating delivery deadlines. In the MAPD problem, agents must manage a continuous stream of delivery tasks online. Tasks are added at any time. Agents must complete their tasks while avoiding collisions with each other. MAPD-D introduces a dynamic, deadline-driven approach that incorporates task deadlines, challenging the conventional MAPD frameworks. To tackle MAPD-D, we propose a novel algorithm named deadline-aware token passing (D-TP). The D-TP algorithm calculates pickup deadlines and assigns tasks while balancing execution cost and deadline proximity. Additionally, we introduce the D-TP with task swaps (D-TPTS) method to further reduce task tardiness, enhancing flexibility and efficiency through task-swapping strategies. Numerical experiments were conducted in simulated warehouse environments to showcase the effectiveness of the proposed methods. Both D-TP and D-TPTS demonstrated significant reductions in task tardiness compared to existing methods. Our methods contribute to efficient operations in automated warehouses and factories with delivery deadlines., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, IROS 2024

Computer Science - Multiagent Systems - Abstract
In environments where many automated guided vehicles (AGVs) operate, planning efficient, collision-free paths is essential. Related research has mainly focused on environments with pre-defined passages, resulting in space inefficiency. We attempt to relax this assumption. In this study, we define multi-agent and multi-rack path finding (MARPF) as the problem of planning paths for AGVs to convey target racks to their designated locations in environments without passages. In such environments, an AGV without a rack can pass under racks, whereas one with a rack cannot pass under racks to avoid collisions. MARPF entails conveying the target racks without collisions, while the obstacle racks are relocated to prevent any interference with the target racks. We formulated MARPF as an integer linear programming problem in a network flow. To distinguish situations in which an AGV is or is not loading a rack, the proposed method introduces two virtual layers into the network. We optimized the AGVs' movements to move obstacle racks and convey the target racks. The formulation and applicability of the algorithm were validated through numerical experiments. The results indicated that the proposed algorithm addressed issues in environments with dense racks., Comment: 7 pages, 10 figures, IROS 2024

Computer Science - Computation and Language ,Computer Science - Artificial Intelligence - Abstract
In this report, we introduce the Gemini 1.5 family of models, representing the next generation of highly compute-efficient multimodal models capable of recalling and reasoning over fine-grained information from millions of tokens of context, including multiple long documents and hours of video and audio. The family includes two new models: (1) an updated Gemini 1.5 Pro, which exceeds the February version on the great majority of capabilities and benchmarks; (2) Gemini 1.5 Flash, a more lightweight variant designed for efficiency with minimal regression in quality. Gemini 1.5 models achieve near-perfect recall on long-context retrieval tasks across modalities, improve the state-of-the-art in long-document QA, long-video QA and long-context ASR, and match or surpass Gemini 1.0 Ultra's state-of-the-art performance across a broad set of benchmarks. Studying the limits of Gemini 1.5's long-context ability, we find continued improvement in next-token prediction and near-perfect retrieval (>99%) up to at least 10M tokens, a generational leap over existing models such as Claude 3.0 (200k) and GPT-4 Turbo (128k). Finally, we highlight real-world use cases, such as Gemini 1.5 collaborating with professionals on completing their tasks achieving 26 to 75% time savings across 10 different job categories, as well as surprising new capabilities of large language models at the frontier; when given a grammar manual for Kalamang, a language with fewer than 200 speakers worldwide, the model learns to translate English to Kalamang at a similar level to a person who learned from the same content.

Condensed Matter - Materials Science ,Physics - Applied Physics - Abstract
Thermal conductivity, a fundamental parameter characterizing thermal transport in solids, is typically determined by electron and phonon transport. Although other transport properties including electrical conductivity and thermoelectric conversion coefficients have material-specific values, it is known that thermal conductivity can be modulated artificially via phonon engineering techniques. Here, we demonstrate another way of artificially modulating the heat conduction in solids: magnonic thermal transport engineering. The time-domain thermoreflectance measurements using ferromagnetic metal/insulator junction systems reveal that the thermal conductivity of the ferromagnetic metals and interfacial thermal conductance vary significantly depending on the spatial distribution of nonequilibrium spin currents. Systematic measurements of the thermal transport properties with changing the boundary conditions for spin currents show that the observed thermal transport modulation stems from magnon origin. This observation unveils that magnons significantly contribute to the heat conduction even in ferromagnetic metals at room temperature, upsetting the conventional wisdom that the thermal conductivity mediated by magnons is very small in metals except at low temperatures. The magnonic thermal transport engineering offers a new principle and method for active thermal management.

Astrophysics - High Energy Astrophysical Phenomena ,High Energy Physics - Experiment - Abstract
We report on a measurement of astrophysical tau neutrinos with 9.7 years of IceCube data. Using convolutional neural networks trained on images derived from simulated events, seven candidate $\nu_\tau$ events were found with visible energies ranging from roughly 20 TeV to 1 PeV and a median expected parent $\nu_\tau$ energy of about 200 TeV. Considering backgrounds from astrophysical and atmospheric neutrinos, and muons from $\pi^\pm/K^\pm$ decays in atmospheric air showers, we obtain a total estimated background of about 0.5 events, dominated by non-$\nu_\tau$ astrophysical neutrinos. Thus, we rule out the absence of astrophysical $\nu_\tau$ at the $5\sigma$ level. The measured astrophysical $\nu_\tau$ flux is consistent with expectations based on previously published IceCube astrophysical neutrino flux measurements and neutrino oscillations., Comment: Accepted for publication in Physical Review Letters. The IceCube Neutrino Observatory relies on an array of photomultiplier tubes to detect Cherenkov light produced by charged particles in the South Pole ice. IceCube data analyses depend on an in-depth characterization of the glacial ice, and on novel approaches in event reconstruction that utilize fast approximations of photoelectron yields. Here, a more accurate model is derived for event reconstruction that better captures our current knowledge of ice optical properties. When evaluated on a Monte Carlo simulation set, the median angular resolution for in-ice particle showers improves by over a factor of three compared to a reconstruction based on a simplified model of the ice. The most substantial improvement is obtained when including effects of birefringence due to the polycrystalline structure of the ice. When evaluated on data classified as particle showers in the high-energy starting events sample, a significantly improved description of the events is observed., Comment: 28 pages, 18 figures, 1 table, submitted to JINST, updated to account for comments received

Astrophysics - High Energy Astrophysical Phenomena ,Astrophysics - Instrumentation and Methods for Astrophysics - Abstract
A measurement of the diffuse astrophysical neutrino spectrum is presented using IceCube data collected from 2011-2022 (10.3 years). We developed novel detection techniques to search for events with a contained vertex and exiting track induced by muon neutrinos undergoing a charged-current interaction. Searching for these starting track events allows us to not only more effectively reject atmospheric muons but also atmospheric neutrino backgrounds in the southern sky, opening a new window to the sub-100 TeV astrophysical neutrino sky. The event selection is constructed using a dynamic starting track veto and machine learning algorithms. We use this data to measure the astrophysical diffuse flux as a single power law flux (SPL) with a best-fit spectral index of $\gamma = 2.58 ^{+0.10}_{-0.09}$ and per-flavor normalization of $\phi^{\mathrm{Astro}}_{\mathrm{per-flavor}} = 1.68 ^{+0.19}_{-0.22} \times 10^{-18} \times \mathrm{GeV}^{-1} \mathrm{cm}^{-2} \mathrm{s}^{-1} \mathrm{sr}^{-1}$ (at 100 TeV). The sensitive energy range for this dataset is 3 - 550 TeV under the SPL assumption. This data was also used to measure the flux under a broken power law, however we did not find any evidence of a low energy cutoff., Comment: 27 pages, 28 figures

We present details on a new measurement of the muon magnetic anomaly, $a_\mu = (g_\mu -2)/2$. The result is based on positive muon data taken at Fermilab's Muon Campus during the 2019 and 2020 accelerator runs. The measurement uses $3.1$ GeV$/c$ polarized muons stored in a $7.1$-m-radius storage ring with a $1.45$ T uniform magnetic field. The value of $ a_{\mu}$ is determined from the measured difference between the muon spin precession frequency and its cyclotron frequency. This difference is normalized to the strength of the magnetic field, measured using Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR). The ratio is then corrected for small contributions from beam motion, beam dispersion, and transient magnetic fields. We measure $a_\mu = 116 592 057 (25) \times 10^{-11}$ (0.21 ppm). This is the world's most precise measurement of this quantity and represents a factor of $2.2$ improvement over our previous result based on the 2018 dataset. In combination, the two datasets yield $a_\mu(\text{FNAL}) = 116 592 055 (24) \times 10^{-11}$ (0.20 ppm). Combining this with the measurements from Brookhaven National Laboratory for both positive and negative muons, the new world average is $a_\mu$(exp) $ = 116 592 059 (22) \times 10^{-11}$ (0.19 ppm)., Comment: 48 pages, 29 figures; 4 pages of Supplement Material; version accepted for publication in Physical Review D

Computer Science - Data Structures and Algorithms - Abstract
We consider composition orderings for linear functions of one variable. Given $n$ linear functions $f_1,\dots,f_n$ and a constant $c$, the objective is to find a permutation $\sigma$ that minimizes/maximizes $f_{\sigma(n)}\circ\dots\circ f_{\sigma(1)}(c)$. It was first studied in the area of time-dependent scheduling, and known to be solvable in $O(n\log n)$ time if all functions are nondecreasing. In this paper, we present a complete characterization of optimal composition orderings for this case, by regarding linear functions as two-dimensional vectors. We also show several interesting properties on optimal composition orderings such as the equivalence between local and global optimality. Furthermore, by using the characterization above, we provide a fixed-parameter tractable (FPT) algorithm for the composition ordering problem for general linear functions, with respect to the number of decreasing linear functions. We next deal with matrix multiplication orderings as a generalization of composition of linear functions. Given $n$ matrices $M_1,\dots,M_n\in\mathbb{R}^{m\times m}$ and two vectors $w,y\in\mathbb{R}^m$, where $m$ denotes a positive integer, the objective is to find a permutation $\sigma$ that minimizes/maximizes $w^\top M_{\sigma(n)}\dots M_{\sigma(1)} y$. The problem is also viewed as a generalization of flow shop scheduling through a limit. By this extension, we show that the multiplication ordering problem for $2\times 2$ matrices is solvable in $O(n\log n)$ time if all the matrices are simultaneously triangularizable and have nonnegative determinants, and FPT with respect to the number of matrices with negative determinants, if all the matrices are simultaneously triangularizable. As the negative side, we finally prove that three possible natural generalizations are NP-hard: 1) when $m=2$, 2) when $m\geq 3$, and 3) the target version of the problem., Comment: 38 pages

With the rapid development of neural networks in recent years, the ability of various networks to enhance the magnitude spectrum of noisy speech in the single-channel speech enhancement domain has become exceptionally outstanding. However, enhancing the phase spectrum using neural networks is often ineffective, which remains a challenging problem. In this paper, we found that the human ear cannot sensitively perceive the difference between a precise phase spectrum and a biased phase (BP) spectrum. Therefore, we propose an optimization method of phase reconstruction, allowing freedom on the global-phase bias instead of reconstructing the precise phase spectrum. We applied it to a Conformer-based Metric Generative Adversarial Networks (CMGAN) baseline model, which relaxes the existing constraints of precise phase and gives the neural network a broader learning space. Results show that this method achieves a new state-of-the-art performance without incurring additional computational overhead., Comment: Accepted by ICASSP 2024 Updated on 2024/06/04 to add one more citation in appendix

Astrophysics - High Energy Astrophysical Phenomena - Abstract
M 87 is the best target for studying black hole accretion and jet formation. Reanalysis of the EHT public data at 230 GHz shows a core-knots structure at the center and jet features (Miyoshi et al. 2022a). We here compare this with the new results of GMVA at 86 GHz showing a spatially resolved central core (Lu et al. 2023a). There are similarities and differences between the two. At 86 GHz,"two bright regions" are seen on the ring in the core."Core-Knot-Westknot", triple structure in the 230 GHz image shows apparent appearance of two peaks similar to the "two bright regions" when convolved with the GMVA beam. This similarity suggests that both frequencies reveal the same objects in the core area. Protrusions are observed on both the south and north sides of the core at both frequencies, becoming prominent and wing-like at 230 GHz. The 86 GHz image shows a triple ridge jet structure, while the 230 GHz image shows only a bright central ridge with two roots. Both frequencies show a shade between the core and the central ridge. To detect the faint features from the EHT2017 data, we found that the use of all baseline data is essential. Using all including the ultrashort baseline data, revealed the jet and faint structures. Without the ultrashort baselines, these structures were not detectable. The lack of detection of any faint structures other than the ring in the M 87 data by the EHTC is presumably due to the exclusion of ultrashort baselines from their analysis., Comment: 17 pages, 4 figures, ApJL, Accepted 27, January, 2024

Name that Neutrino is a citizen science project where volunteers aid in classification of events for the IceCube Neutrino Observatory, an immense particle detector at the geographic South Pole. From March 2023 to September 2023, volunteers did classifications of videos produced from simulated data of both neutrino signal and background interactions. Name that Neutrino obtained more than 128,000 classifications by over 1,800 registered volunteers that were compared to results obtained by a deep neural network machine-learning algorithm. Possible improvements for both Name that Neutrino and the deep neural network are discussed.

Computer Science - Data Structures and Algorithms - Abstract
Characterizing the solution sets in a problem by closedness under operations is recognized as one of the key aspects of algorithm development, especially in constraint satisfaction. An example from the Boolean satisfiability problem is that the solution set of a Horn conjunctive normal form (CNF) is closed under the minimum operation, and this property implies that minimizing a nonnegative linear function over a Horn CNF can be done in polynomial time. In this paper, we focus on the set of integer points (vectors) in a polyhedron, and study the relation between these sets and closedness under operations from the viewpoint of 2-decomposability. By adding further conditions to the 2-decomposable polyhedra, we show that important classes of sets of integer vectors in polyhedra are characterized by 2-decomposability and closedness under certain operations, and in some classes, by closedness under operations alone. The most prominent result we show is that the set of integer vectors in a unit-two-variable-per-inequality polyhedron can be characterized by closedness under the median and directed discrete midpoint operations, each of these operations was independently considered in constraint satisfaction and discrete convex analysis., Comment: 22 pages

Travel Behavior ,COVID-19 Pandemic ,Remote Work ,Hybrid Work ,Online Shopping ,Shared Mobility ,Vehicle Ownership ,Vehicle Miles Traveled ,Longitudinal Data - Abstract
During the early months of the pandemic, stay-at-home orders and concerns about infection catalyzed a shift toward online activities, such as remote work and e-shopping, resulting in a significant decrease in conventional travel. However, as the effects of the pandemic diminished, the pandemic-induced online activities began to subside, and conventional travel started to rebound. The challenge among transportation planners and policymakers is to determine the lasting effects of the pandemic and adjust the policies accordingly. In the same efforts to understand the evolving travel-related activities and inform policymaking, the 3 Revolutions Future Mobility Program at the University of California, Davis, conducted four waves of mobility surveys between Spring 2020 and Fall 2023. Key findings from the analysis of these data reveal that remote work and a combination of remote work and physical commuting (i.e., hybrid work) emerge as an enduring outcome of the pandemic. The pandemic accelerated the rise of e-shopping, both for grocery and non-grocery purchases, with findings demonstrating the critical influence of socio-demographic factors, including age, gender, and income, on e-shopping adoption and frequency. The findings show that socio-demographic factors such as work status, income level, and work arrangements are associated with household vehicle ownership changes and individual vehicle miles traveled (VMT). In particular, an increase in commute frequency reduces the likelihood of vehicle shedding, while amplifying the likelihood of vehicle acquisition. In the meantime, remote workers exhibit lower commuting VMT but higher non-commuting VMT compared to hybrid workers. The findings demonstrate a similarity between the percentage of respondents who used public transit, bikes, e-bikes, and e-scooters for commuting and non-commuting trips to some degree between 2019 and 2023. These insights underscore that adapting to shifting activity and transportation patterns is crucial for policymakers and planners to build a sustainable and inclusive post-pandemic future.

While the semi-blind source separation-based acoustic echo cancellation (SBSS-AEC) has received much research attention due to its promising performance during double-talk compared to the traditional adaptive algorithms, it suffers from system latency and nonlinear distortions. To circumvent these drawbacks, the recently developed ideas on convolutive transfer function (CTF) approximation and nonlinear expansion have been used in the iterative projection (IP)-based semi-blind source separation (SBSS) algorithm. However, because of the introduction of CTF approximation and nonlinear expansion, this algorithm becomes computationally very expensive, which makes it difficult to implement in embedded systems. Thus, we attempt in this paper to improve this IP-based algorithm, thereby developing an element-wise iterative source steering (EISS) algorithm. In comparison with the IP-based SBSS algorithm, the proposed algorithm is computationally much more efficient, especially when the nonlinear expansion order is high and the length of the CTF filter is long. Meanwhile, its AEC performance is as good as that of IP-based SBSS.

Astrophysics - High Energy Astrophysical Phenomena - Abstract
We present the results of a search for 10--1,000 GeV neutrinos from 2,268 gamma-ray bursts over 8 years of IceCube-DeepCore data. This work probes burst physics below the photosphere where electromagnetic radiation cannot escape. Neutrinos of tens of GeVs are predicted in sub-photospheric collision of free streaming neutrons with bulk-jet protons. In a first analysis, we searched for the most significant neutrino-GRB coincidence using six overlapping time windows centered on the prompt phase of each GRB. In a second analysis, we conducted a search for a group of GRBs, each individually too weak to be detectable, but potentially significant when combined. No evidence of neutrino emission is found for either analysis. The most significant neutrino coincidence is for Fermi-GBM GRB bn 140807500, with a p-value of 0.097 corrected for all trials. The binomial test used to search for a group of GRBs had a p-value of 0.65 after all trial corrections. The binomial test found a group consisting only of GRB bn 140807500 and no additional GRBs. The neutrino limits of this work complement those obtained by IceCube at TeV to PeV energies. We compare our findings for the large set of GRBs as well as GRB 221009A to the sub-photospheric neutron-proton collision model and find that GRB 221009A provides the most constraining limit on baryon loading. For a jet Lorentz factor of 300 (800), the baryon loading on GRB 221009A is lower than 3.85 (2.13) at a 90% confidence level.

Astrophysics - High Energy Astrophysical Phenomena ,High Energy Physics - Experiment - Abstract
We present the results of a time-dependent search for neutrino flares in data collected by IceCube between May 2011 and 2021. This data set contains cascade-like events originating from charged-current electron neutrino and tau neutrino interactions and all-flavor neutral-current interactions. IceCube's previous all-sky searches for neutrino flares used data sets consisting of track-like events originating from charged-current muon neutrino interactions. The cascade data sets are statistically independent of the track data sets and provide a new opportunity to observe the transient all-sky landscape. This search uses the spatial, temporal, and energy information of the cascade-like events to conduct searches for the most statistically significant neutrino flares in the northern and southern skies. No statistically significant time-dependent neutrino emission was observed. For the most statistically significant location in the northern sky, $p_\mathrm{global} =$ 0.71, and in the southern sky, $p_\mathrm{global} =$ 0.51. These results are compatible with the background hypothesis. Assuming an E$^{-2.53}$ spectrum from the diffuse astrophysical neutrino flux as measured with cascades, these results are used to calculate upper limits at the 90\% confidence level on neutrino flares of varying duration and constrain the contribution of these flares to the diffuse astrophysical neutrino flux. These constraints are independent of a specified class of astrophysical objects and show that multiple unresolved transient sources may contribute to the diffuse astrophysical neutrino flux., Comment: Submitted to The Astrophysical Journal

Electrical Engineering and Systems Science - Audio and Speech Processing - Abstract
Array processing performance depends on the number of microphones available. Virtual microphone estimation (VME) has been proposed to increase the number of microphone signals artificially. Neural network-based VME (NN-VME) trains an NN with a VM-level loss to predict a signal at a microphone location that is available during training but not at inference. However, this training objective may not be optimal for a specific array processing back-end, such as beamforming. An alternative approach is to use a training objective considering the array-processing back-end, such as a loss on the beamformer output. This approach may generate signals optimal for beamforming but not physically grounded. To combine the advantages of both approaches, this paper proposes a multi-task loss for NN-VME that combines both VM-level and beamformer-level losses. We evaluate the proposed multi-task NN-VME on multi-talker underdetermined conditions and show that it achieves a 33.1 % relative WER improvement compared to using only real microphones and 10.8 % compared to using a prior NN-VME approach., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures, 1 table

Some stars are known to explode at the end of their lives, called supernovae (SNe). The substantial amount of matter and energy that SNe release provides significant feedback to star formation and gas dynamics in a galaxy. SNe release a substantial amount of matter and energy to the interstellar medium, resulting in significant feedback to star formation and gas dynamics in a galaxy. While such feedback has a crucial role in galaxy formation and evolution, in simulations of galaxy formation, it has only been implemented using simple {\it sub-grid models} instead of numerically solving the evolution of gas elements around SNe in detail due to a lack of resolution. We develop a method combining machine learning and Gibbs sampling to predict how a supernova (SN) affects the surrounding gas. The fidelity of our model in the thermal energy and momentum distribution outperforms the low-resolution SN simulations. Our method can replace the SN sub-grid models and help properly simulate un-resolved SN feedback in galaxy formation simulations. We find that employing our new approach reduces the necessary computational cost to $\sim$ 1 percent compared to directly resolving SN feedback., Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures, Accepted for the NeurIPS 2023 AI4Science Workshop

We study remoteness function $\mathcal R$ of impartial games introduced by Smith in 1966. The player who moves from a position $x$ can win if and only if $\mathcal R(x)$ is odd. The odd values of $\mathcal R(x)$ show how soon the winner can win, while even values show how long the loser can resist, provided both players play optimally. This function can be applied to the conjunctive compounds of impartial games, in the same way as the Sprague-Grundy function is applicable to their disjunctive compounds. We provide polynomial algorithms computing $\mathcal R(x)$ for games Euclid and generalized Wythoff. For Moore's NIM we give a simple explicit formula for $\mathcal R(x)$ if it is even and show that computing it becomes an NP-hard problem for the odd values., Comment: 22 pages

We determined the complex dielectric functions of $\varepsilon$-Ga$_2$O$_3$ using optical transmittance and reflectance spectroscopies at temperatures from 10 K to room temperature. The measured dielectric-function spectra reveal distinct structures at a bandgap energy. We fitted a model dielectric function based on the electronic energy-band structure to these experimental data. We analyzed the temperature dependence of the band-gap with a model based on phonon dispersion effects. One could explain it in terms of phonon-related parameters such as the optical phonon temperature. We compare phonon-related properties of $\varepsilon$-Ga$_2$O$_3$ with those of a large variety of element and binary semiconductors., Comment: 10 pages, 6 png figures, using arxiv.sty

Our input is a directed, rooted graph $G = (V \cup \{r\},E)$ where each vertex in $V$ has a partial order preference over its incoming edges. The preferences of a vertex extend naturally to preferences over arborescences rooted at $r$. We seek a popular arborescence in $G$, i.e., one for which there is no "more popular" arborescence. Popular arborescences have applications in liquid democracy or collective decision making; however, they need not exist in every input instance. The popular arborescence problem is to decide if a given input instance admits a popular arborescence or not. We show a polynomial-time algorithm for this problem, whose computational complexity was not known previously. Our algorithm is combinatorial, and can be regarded as a primal-dual algorithm. It searches for an arborescence along with its dual certificate, a chain of subsets of $E$, witnessing its popularity. In fact, our algorithm solves the more general popular common base problem in the intersection of two matroids, where one matroid is the partition matroid defined by any partition $E = \bigcup_{v\in V} \delta(v)$ and the other is an arbitrary matroid on $E$ of rank $|V|$, with each $v \in V$ having a partial order over elements in $\delta(v)$. We extend our algorithm to the case with forced or forbidden edges. We also study the related popular colorful forest (or more generally, the popular common independent set) problem where edges are partitioned into color classes, and the task is to find a colorful forest that is popular within the set of all colorful forests. For the case with weak rankings, we formulate the popular colorful forest polytope, and thus show that a minimum-cost popular colorful forest can be computed efficiently. By contrast, we prove that it is NP-hard to compute a minimum-cost popular arborescence, even when rankings are strict., Comment: 28 pages, 15 figures

The complex dielectric functions of LiNbO$_2$ were determined using optical transmittance and reflectance spectroscopies at room temperature. The measured dielectric function spectra reveal distinct structures at several bandgap energies. The bandgaps (exciton resonances) in the spectrum were observed at ca. 2.3, 3.2, 3.9, and 5.1 eV, respectively. These experimental data have been fit using a model dielectric function based on the electronic energy-band structure near critical points plus excitonic effects. The features of measured dielectric functions are, to some extent, reproduced quantitatively by an ab-initio calculation including the interaction effects between electrons and holes., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, 1 table

Our perception of cold enriches our understanding of the world and allows us to interact with it. Therefore, the presentation of cold sensations will be beneficial in improving the sense of immersion and presence in virtual reality and the metaverse. This study proposed a novel method for spatially continuous cold sensation presentation based on low-temperature airflows. We defined the shortest distance between two airflows perceived as different cold stimuli as a local cold stimulus group discrimination threshold (LCSGDT). By setting the distance between airflows within the LCSGDT, spatially continuous cold sensations can be achieved with an optimal number of cold airflows. We hypothesized that the LCSGDTs are related to the heat-transfer capability of airflows and developed a model to relate them. We investigated the LCSGDTs at a flow rate of 25 L/min and presentation distances ranging from 10 to 50 mm. The results showed that under these conditions, the LCSGDTs are 131.4 $\pm$ 1.9 mm, and the heat-transfer capacity of the airflow corresponding to these LCSGDTs is an almost constant value, that is, 0.92., Comment: 7 pages

We have observed a new optical transition in the photoreflectance spectra of indirect-gap BiOCl thin films, which were grown on SrTiO$_3$ substrates. The position of this transition is close in energy to its bulk critical point energy. Moreover, these are significantly lower than a higher-lying direct-type critical point from an energetic point of view. The spectral line shape analysis for our observed signal suggests the presence of an excitonic effect of this compound. We determined its dependence of the optical anomaly on temperature ranging from 80 K to room temperature. We adopted the Varshni model for this analysis. At last, we compared phononic properties of BiOCl with those of an element and binary semiconductors., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures, submitted to Jpn. J. Appl. Phys
