Abstract

Owing to the high penetrating power of high-energy cosmic ray muons, muon imaging techniques can be used to image large bulky objects, especially objects with heavy shielding. Muon imaging systems work just like CT scanners in the medical imaging field—that is, they can reveal information inside of a target. There are two forms of muon imaging techniques: muon absorption imaging and muon multiple scattering imaging. The former is based on the flux attenuation of muons, and the latter is based on the multiple scattering of muons in matter. The muon absorption imaging technique is capable of imaging very large objects such as volcanoes and large buildings, and also smaller objects like spent fuel casks; the muon multiple scattering imaging technique is best suited to inspect smaller objects such as nuclear waste containers. Muon imaging techniques can be applied in a broad variety of fields, i.e. from measuring the magma thickness of volcanoes to searching for secret cavities in pyramids, and from monitoring the borders of countries checking for special nuclear materials to monitoring the spent fuel casks for nuclear safeguards applications. In this paper, the principles of muon imaging are reviewed. Image reconstruction algorithms such as Filtered Back Projection and Maximum Likelihood Expectation Maximization are discussed. Abstract

The production of the polyene antibiotic, pimaricin by the organism Streptomyces natalensis CBS 700.57 was studied using an apparatus comprising a 10 litre fermentation vessel, and facilities for temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, vessel pressure and gas composition measurement. The apparatus was connected via a Texas Instruments PM550 programmable logic controller to an IBM-compatible computer in order to record data from the fermentation and to control certain parameters. Adjustment of medium composition, and the use of fed batch techniques did not produce any improvements in pimaricin yields. However, a crucial role for carbonate in stimulating the production of the antibiotic was demonstrated. Yields as high as 1 g/litre were obtained. Patterns in dissolved oxygen were observed which suggested that autolytic processes may occur towards the end of the fermentation due to glucose depletion. The production of the antibiotic was not shown to be dissociated from cell growth. An assay method, using High Performance Liquid Chromatography, for routinely estimating the levels of pimaricin in fermentation broths was successfully developed.

Abstract

We present recently-released HERMES Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering results of Beam-Helicity (formerly Beam-Spin, BSA) and Beam-Charge (BCA) asymmetries from unpo-larised proton, deuteron and selected heavy nuclear gas targets. A new analysis technique utilising the ability of HERA to produce a longitudinally-polarised lepton beam of both charges has been used to simultaneously extract the BSA and BCA amplitudes arising from the DVCS-squared and Interference terms of the total cross section for proton and deuteron data. Results of the Transverse Target-Spin Asymmetry (TTSA) obtained using this technique have been published for transversely-polarised proton data. These extracted asymmetries are presented, integrated over the kinematic acceptance of the HERMES experiment for this interaction, with their dependences on -t, xB and Q2 also shown. The results are compared with asymmetries from a phenomenological model of GPDs based on double distributions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

97. Deeply virtual compton scattering off longitudinally polarised protons at HERMES

Abstract

This thesis details the simultaneous extraction of three polarisation-dependent asymmetries in the distribution of real photons from the e p → e p γ interaction and its indistisguishable deeply virtual Compton scattering and Bethe-Heitler processes at the HERMES fixed-target experiment at Desy. The data analysed were taken using a longitudinally polarised 27.57 GeV positron beam incident on a longitudinally polarised hydrogen gas target. The extracted asymmetries include two single-spin asymmetries A_UL and A_LU which depend on the polarisation of the target and beam respectively, averaged over all other polarisation states. The double-spin asymmetry A_LL dependent on the product of the beam and target polarisations is extracted for the first time. The asymmetry amplitudes extracted relate to combinations of Generalised Parton Distributions (GPDs), predominantly H and Htilde. The extracted amplitudes will be presented across the HERMES kinematic range alongside theoretical predictions from a GPD model based on double distributions. Large sin phi and cos(0phi) amplitudes are observed for A_UL and A_LL respectively, with an unexpectedly large sin(2phi) amplitude for A_UL . The results for the A_UL and A_LL asymmetries are broadly compatible with theory predictions, and the extracted A_LU amplitudes are compatible with HERMES results extracted from a significantly larger data set. It is foreseen that these results will form input to future global data-based GPD models which aim to provide a better understanding of GPDs.
